Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the appropriate time points to start regular exercise which could reduce age-related anxiety and impaired social behavior. METHODS For this study, 8-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: no exercise (NoEX), short-term exercise (S-Ex), and long-term exercise (L-Ex) groups. S-Ex-group rats started treadmill exercise at 12 months of age, while L-Ex rats started from at 2 months of age. Exercise rats were forced to walk on the treadmill three times per week, with 1- to 2-day intervals for 10 minutes during the first 2 weeks, at 10 m/min until 17 months of age, and at 8 m/min thereafter. At 19 months of age, behavioral tests were performed to assess the effects of exercise on age-induced behavioral change as well as quantitative polymerase chain reaction were done to uncover the mechanism behind the behavioral changes. RESULTS Anxiety-like behavior was improved by long-term exercise. Additionally, rats belonging to the S-Ex and L-Ex groups showed improved social behavior and increased curiosity about interesting objects. The qPCR data showed that treadmill exercise suppressed the expression of immediate-early genes in the prefrontal cortex of the aged rats. CONCLUSION This study suggests that long-term exercise represses early response genes, and in this way, it increases resistance to stress, diminishes anxiety-related behavior, and improves social behavior. These findings underscore the need to consider appropriate time to start exercise to prevent stress induced anxiety related behavior.

Abstract
Self-healing collodion baby (SHCB), also called "self-improving collodion baby", is a rare mild variant of autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis and is defined as a collodion baby who shows the nearly complete resolution of scaling within the first 3 months to 1 year of life. However, during the neonatal period, it is not easy to distinguish SHCB from other inflammatory forms of autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis, such as congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma. Here, we report a case study of two Japanese SHCB patients with compound heterozygous mutations, c.235G>T (p.(Glu79∗))/ c.1189C>T (p.(Arg397Cys)) and c.1295A>G (p.(Tyr432Cys))/ c.1138delG (p.(Asp380Thrfs∗3)), in CYP4F22, which encodes cytochrome P450, family 4, subfamily F, polypeptide 22 (CYP4F22). Immunohistochemically, inflammation with the strong expression of IL-17C, IL-36γ, and TNF-α was seen in the skin at birth. CYP4F22 is an ultra-long-chain FA ω-hydroxylase responsible for ω-O-acylceramide (acylceramide) production. Among the epidermal ceramides, acylceramide is a key lipid in maintaining the epidermal permeability barrier function. We found that the levels of ceramides with ω-hydroxy FAs including acylceramides and the levels of protein-bound ceramides were much lower in stratum corneum samples obtained by tape stripping from SHCB patients than in those from their unaffected parents and individuals without SHCB. Additionally, our cell-based enzyme assay revealed that two mutants, p.(Glu79∗) and p.(Arg397Cys), had no enzyme activity. Our findings suggest that genetic testing coupled with noninvasive ceramide analyses using tape-stripped stratum corneum samples might be useful for the early and precise diagnosis of congenital ichthyoses, including SHCB.

Abstract
Various epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) ligands are highly expressed in the epidermis of psoriasis lesions, and abnormal EGFR activation appears to be involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. However, how EGFR signaling contributes to the development of psoriasis is unclear. Interleukin (IL)-17A, a critical effector of the IL-23/IL-17A pathway, increases the expression of psoriasis signature genes in keratinocytes and plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis by inducing IκBζ, a critical transcriptional regulator in psoriasis. In this study, we stimulated primary human keratinocytes with IL-17A and various EGFR ligands to investigate whether EGFR ligands regulate the expression of psoriasis signature genes. In cultured normal human keratinocytes and a living skin equivalent, EGFR ligands did not induce psoriasis-related gene expression, but significantly enhanced the IL-17A-mediated induction of various psoriasis signature genes, including antimicrobial peptides, cytokines, and chemokines. This was dependent on an EGFR activation-mediated synergistic increase in IL-17A-induced IκBζ expression and was partially mediated by the EGFR-dependent upregulation of Bcl3. Therefore, EGFR ligands can act as synergistic agents of IL-17A signaling by stimulating the epidermal production of psoriasis signature genes in psoriasis lesions. Abstract
The axon initial segment (AIS) is a structural neuronal compartment of the proximal axon that plays key roles in sodium channel clustering, action potential initiation, and signal propagation of neuronal outputs. Mutations in constitutive genes of the AIS, such as ANK3, have been identified in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders. Nevertheless, morphological changes in the AIS in neurodevelopmental disorders have not been characterized. In this study, we investigated the length of the AIS in rodent models of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We observed abnormalities in AIS length in both animal models. In ADHD model rodents, we observed shorter AIS length in layer 2/3 (L2/3) neurons of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and primary somatosensory barrel field (S1BF). Further, we observed shorter AIS length in S1BF L5 neurons. In ASD model mice, we observed shorter AIS length in L2/3 and L5 neurons of the S1BF. These results suggest that impairments in AIS length are common phenomena in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and ASD and may be conserved across species. Our findings provide novel insight into the potential contribution of the AIS to the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abstract
Myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88) is essential for microglial activation. Despite the significant role of microglia in regulating sleep homeostasis, the contribution of MyD88 to sleep is yet to be determined. To address this, we performed electroencephalographic and electromyographic recordings on MyD88-KO mice and wild-type mice to investigate their sleep/wake cycles. In the daytime, MyD88-KO mice exhibited prolonged wakefulness and shorter non-rapid eye movement sleep duration. Tail suspension and sucrose preference tests revealed that MyD88-KO mice displayed a depressive-like phenotype. We determined monoamines in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) using high-performance liquid chromatography and observed a decreased content of serotonin in the PFC of MyD88-KO mice. Flow cytometry revealed that CD11b, CD45, and F4/80 expressions were elevated at Zeitgeber time (ZT) 1 compared to at ZT13 only in wild-type mice. Furthermore, MFG-E8 and C1qB-tagged synapses were enhanced at ZT1 in the PFC of wild-type mice but not in MyD88-KO mice. Primary cultured microglia from MyD88-KO mice revealed decreased phagocytic ability. These findings indicate that genetic deletion of MyD88 induces insomnia and depressive behavior, at least in part, by affecting microglial homeostasis functions and lowering the serotonergic neuronal output.

Abstract
Microglial cells in normal mature brains have long been considered to be cells that are resting until pathological events take place, activating the microglial cells. However, it is currently well known that the microglia that have resting ramified morphology in normal mature brains move actively in the brain parenchyma and phagocytose synapses, thus forming and maintaining neural circuits. This review summarizes recent findings on the roles of microglia in mature brains, with special reference to phagocytosis of synapses and higher brain functions. Phagocytic elimination of synapses by microglia may affect the balance between excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission, termed the E/I balance. When impaired synaptic elimination by microglia leads to disturbed E/I balance, various problems may follow in brain functions: in memory and cognitive functions, sleep, movement, social behaviors, and thinking. In addition to the roles of microglia in normal developing and mature brains, impaired microglial phagocytosis functions also correlate with disturbances to these higher brain functions that are caused by neurological, mental, and developmental disorders; Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and schizophrenia.

Abstract
The skin microbiome influences skin pathophysiology. Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic skin disease characterized by infectious-like pustules on the palms and soles. These pustules are thought to be sterile because bacterial cultures obtained from the pustules are negative. However, culture methods are limited in their ability to identify all bacteria on the skin. We hypothesized that the "sterile" pustules of PPP do not lack bacteria, but rather contain a microbiome. To test this hypothesis, we identified bacteria in "sterile" pustules using non-culture methods. We conducted Sanger and 16S rRNA sequencing using primers specific to the V1-V2 region in PPP-pustulovesicles (PVs) (n = 43) and pompholyx vesicle fluids (n = 15). Sanger sequencing identified some Staphylococcus, Propionibacterium, Streptococcus and Pyrinomonas species in PPP-PVs but failed to identify any bacteria in most of the pompholyx vesicles. 16S rRNA sequencing of PPP-PVs indicated the presence of a microbiome that included various phyla, including Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes. At the genus level, smokers had higher levels of Staphylococcus in PPP-PVs compared with non-smokers. These results indicate that a microbiome exists in "sterile" pustules of PPP and that PPP smokers had higher levels of Staphylococcus in pustules. It is therefore necessary to reconsider the pathogenesis of PPP from the perspective of the microbiome.

Abstract
Epidermal keratinocytes initiate skin inflammation by activating immune cells. The skin barrier is disrupted in atopic dermatitis (AD) and epidermal keratinocytes can be exposed to environmental stimuli, such as house dust mite (HDM) allergens. We showed previously that HDM allergens activate the NLRP3 inflammasome of keratinocytes, thereby releasing pro-inflammatory cytokines. Heparinoid is an effective moisturizer for atopic dry skin. However, a recent report showed that heparinoid treatment can improve inflammation of lichen planus. Therefore, we hypothesized that it acts on epidermal keratinocytes not only as a moisturizer, but also as a suppressant of the triggers of skin inflammation. We found that HDM allergen-induced interleukin (IL)-1β release from keratinocytes was inhibited significantly by heparinoid pretreatment without affecting cell viability. However, heparinoid did not affect caspase-1 release, suggesting that heparinoid did not affect HDM allergen-induced inflammasome activation. Heparinoid treatment not only decreased intracellular levels of pro-IL-1β, but also suppressed IL-1β messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in keratinocytes. Among the intracellular signalling pathways, the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase and p38 pathways, which are required for IL-1β expression in keratinocytes, was inhibited by heparinoid treatment. The inhibitory effect of heparinoid on IL-1β mRNA expression was also confirmed with living skin equivalents. Our results demonstrated that heparinoid suppresses the initiation of keratinocyte-mediated skin inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a nuclear protein that stabilizes DNA and facilitates gene transcription. Additionally, cell stress or death induces the release of HMGB1 outside the cell membrane, where HMGB1 functions as an alarmin, causing an inflammatory response in combination with other cytokines, damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), and pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of reduced-HMGB1 (previously termed chemoattractive-HMGB1) on polyinosine-polycytidylic acid [poly(I:C)]-induced inflammation in normal human keratinocytes (NHKs). METHODS We focused on downstream components of the poly(I:C)-Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), retinoic acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I), and melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5) pathways, including IκBα, nuclear factor (NF)-κB p65, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3), and assessed whether these pathways are involved in the suppression of poly(I:C)-induced inflammation in NHKs by HMGB1. An immunoprecipitation was performed to know whether HMGB1 could bind to poly(I:C), and immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometric analysis were performed to check whether reduced-HMGB interferes with cellular uptake of poly(I:C) translocation (possibly by endocytosis). RESULTS Application of exogenous HMGB1 before, but not after, exerted a suppressive effect on poly(I:C)-induced inflammation in NHKs. In addition, reduced-HMGB1, but not disulfide-HMGB1, exerted a suppressive effect on poly(I:C)-induced inflammation in NHKs, suggesting the importance of the redox status of exogenous HMGB1. Pre-treatment with reduced-HMGB1 inhibited the phosphorylation of IκBα, NF-κB p65, and IRF3 induced by poly(I:C) stimulation in NHKs; however, phosphorylation of p38, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) was unaffected. Disulfide-HMGB1 formed a complex with poly(I:C), as did reduced- and oxidized-HMGB1, albeit to a lesser extent. Immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometric analysis indicated that reduced-HMGB interferes with cellular uptake of poly(I:C) translocation (possibly by endocytosis). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that pre-treatment with reduced-HMGB1 ameliorates poly(I:C)-mediated inflammation in NHKs.

Abstract
IL-22 induces STAT3 phosphorylation and mediates psoriasis-related gene expression. However, the signaling mechanism leading from pSTAT3 to the expression of these genes remains unclear. We focused on Bcl-3, which is induced by STAT3 activation and mediates gene expression. In cultured human epidermal keratinocytes, IL-22 increased Bcl-3, which was translocated to the nucleus with p50 via STAT3 activation. The increases in CXCL8, S100As and human β-defensin 2 mRNA expression caused by IL-22 were abolished by siRNA against Bcl-3. Although CCL20 expression was also augmented by IL-22, the knockdown of Bcl-3 increased its level. Moreover, the combination of IL-22 and IL-17A enhanced Bcl-3 production, IL-22-induced gene expression, and the expression of other psoriasis-related genes, including those encoding IL-17C, IL-19, and IL-36γ. The expression of these genes (except for CCL20) was also suppressed by the knockdown of Bcl-3. Bcl-3 overexpression induced CXCL8 and HBD2 expression but not S100As expression. We also compared Bcl-3 expression between psoriatic skin lesions and normal skin. Immunostaining revealed strong signals for Bcl-3 and p50 in the nucleus of epidermal keratinocytes from psoriatic skin. The IL-22-STAT3-Bcl-3 pathway may be important in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

Abstract
Ischemic brain injuries caused release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that activate microglia/macrophages (MG/MPs) by binding to Toll-like receptors. Using middle cerebral artery transiently occluded rats, we confirmed that MG/MPs expressed inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) on 3days after reperfusion (dpr) in ischemic rat brain. iNOS expression almost disappeared on 7dpr when transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) expression was robustly increased. After transient incubation with TGF-β1 for 24h, rat primary microglial cells were incubated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and released NO level was measured. The NO release was persistently suppressed even 72h after removal of TGF-β1. The sustained TGF-β1 effects were not attributable to microglia-derived endogenous TGF-β1, as revealed by TGF-β1 knockdown and in vitro quantification studies. Then, boiled supernatants prepared from ischemic brain tissues showed the similar sustained inhibitory effects on LPS-treated microglial cells that were prevented by the TGF-β1 receptor-selective blocker SB525334. After incubation with TGF-β1 for 24h and its subsequent removal, LPS-induced phosphorylation of IκB kinases (IKKs), IκB degradation, and NFκB nuclear translocation were inhibited in a sustained manner. SB525334 abolished all these effects of TGF-β1. In consistent with the in vitro results, phosphorylated IKK-immunoreactivity was abundant in MG/MPs in ischemic brain lesion on 3dpr, whereas it was almost disappeared on 7dpr. The findings suggest that abundantly produced TGF-β1 in ischemic brain displays sustained anti-inflammatory effects on microglial cells by persistently inhibiting endogenous Toll-like receptor ligand-induced IκB degradation.

Abstract
An old sedative and hypnotic bromovalerylurea (BU) has anti-inflammatory effects. BU suppressed nitric oxide (NO) release and proinflammatory cytokine expression by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated BV2 cells, a murine microglial cell line. However, BU did not inhibit LPS-induced nuclear translocation of nuclear factor-κB and subsequent transcription. BU suppressed LPS-induced phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) and expression of interferon regulatory factor 1 (IRF1). The Janus kinase 1 (JAK1) inhibitor filgotinib suppressed the NO release much more weakly than that of BU, although filgotinib almost completely prevented LPS-induced STAT1 phosphorylation. Knockdown of JAK1, STAT1, or IRF1 did not affect the suppressive effects of BU on LPS-induced NO release by BV2 cells. A combination of BU and filgotinib synergistically suppressed the NO release. The mitochondrial complex I inhibitor rotenone, which did not prevent STAT1 phosphorylation or IRF1 expression, suppressed proinflammatory mediator expression less significantly than BU. BU and rotenone reduced intracellular ATP (iATP) levels to a similar extent. A combination of rotenone and filgotinib suppressed NO release by LPS-treated BV2 cells as strongly as BU. These results suggest that anti-inflammatory actions of BU may be attributable to the synergism of inhibition of JAK1/STAT1-dependent pathways and reduction in iATP level.

Abstract
We previously reported that the early vesicle of the palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) vesicle originated from eccrine sweat in the acrosyringium and that the PPP vesicle contains the antimicrobial peptide human cathelicidin-18/LL-37. The concentration of LL-37 was sufficient to induce the subsequent inflammation in lesions and human keratinocytes, and the PPP vesicles contained additional small fragments of human cathelicidin-18, of approximately 7 kDa, which have not been identified. The aim of the present study was to clarify the additional processed forms found in PPP vesicles and their physiological effects on normal keratinocytes and sweat gland cells. Lesional PPP vesicles were collected from PPP patients, and endogenous human cathelicidin-18/LL-37 was depleted using a LL-37 antibody affinity column. A designed recombinant human cathelicidin-18 peptide was prepared and incubated with the depleted PPP vesicle fluid to confirm the additional processed form. In-gel digestion analysis and protein sequencing confirmed the additional form as TLN-58. TLN-58 up-regulated IL-17C, IL-8, IL-23, IL-1α, and IL-1β mRNA and protein expression in normal human keratinocytes and also showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and group A Streptococcus species, similar to LL-37. This additional form could be involved in the continued inflammation in PPP lesions.

Abstract
Pustulosis palmaris et plantaris or palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a refractory pustular eruption of the palms and soles with unknown etiology. In addition to skin lesions, PPP patients may present with severe joint pain and pustulotic arthro-osteitis (PAO), especially of the sternoclavicular joint. PAO is sometimes regarded as a variant of synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome. Hence, macrolide and tetracycline antibiotics are used for the treatment of PPP with PAO. We report 3 cases of PPP with PAO that did not improve upon administration of macrolide antibiotics with NSAIDs. After administration of cefcapene pivoxil hydrochloride (CFPN-PI), a third-generation cephalosporin, the swelling and sternoclavicular joint pain were promptly reduced and dramatically improved in all 3 cases. We review the conventional antibiotic treatments used currently and propose CFPN-PI as a potentially new therapy for PPP or PPP + PAO.

Abstract
The data set of the crystal structure of a self-complementary RNA duplex r(ggcggucgcu)2 with terminal and tandem G x U wobble base-pairs has been collected to 2.3 A resolution. Crystals belong to the tetragonal space group P4(1)2(1)2 or P4(3)2(1)2; a = b = 50.0 A, c = 102.7 A, and alpha = beta = gamma = 90 degrees, with two duplexes in the asymmetric unit. The structural analysis using the MAD method is currently in progress.

Abstract
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a major component of air pollutants, induces inflammatory responses in the lungs. Resident alveolar macrophages (AM) play an immunosuppressive role in the lungs via suppression of lymphocyte proliferation, and nitric oxide (NO) plays a crucial role in this immunosuppressive activity. Microenvironmental changes within the alveoli during inflammatory responses, however, can inhibit this immunosuppressive activity of AM. The present study was designed to clarify the effect of NO2 exposure on the immunosuppressive activity of and NO production by AM in rats. Wistar rats were exposed to 10 ppm NO2 for 3, 14 or 28 days, after which bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was taken as a sample of the alveolar microenvironment. Suppression of concanavalin A-induced lymphocyte proliferation and NO production by AM were markedly inhibited by BALF from NO2-exposed rats (NO2-BALF). The inhibitory effect of NO2-BALF at 28-days exposure was stronger than that of NO2-BALF at 3 or 14 days exposure. In conclusion, AM-mediated immunosuppressive activity was inhibited by the NO2-induced changes of the alveolar microenvironment through the inhibition of NO production.

Abstract
The incidence of metastasis to another organs of the intracranial tumors is rare, while the intracranial dissemination of brain tumor is often experienced clinically. For this purpose of the formation and growth of the intracranial tumor dissemination, VX2 carcinomas implanted into cisterna magna of 24 New Zealand rabbits are studied by neuroradiological and pathological methods. Twenty-one out of 24 (87%) had tumors intracranially. Nineteen cases out of 24 rabbits developed intraventricular tumors selectively. Two cases without the development of tumors showed moderate dilated lateral ventricles. Thiry-seven percent of implanted tumor cases were demonstrated by 3 times magnification cerebral angiography. While CT presented 67 percent of tumors indicating about two times higher detection than magnification cerebral angiography. From the result of these experiment, the detection of tumors by CT was two times higher than the magnification angiography.

Abstract
Twenty-five neonatal beagles were used for this study. Gliosarcoma was injected into the cerebral hemisphere of 7 neonatal beagles (Group I). These animals were then treated by boron neutron capture therapy. The response of the tumor to therapy was evaluated by serial CT scans and 3 times magnification of cerebral angiography. The animals were sacrificed at varying post-therapy periods for histological study. Fifteen neonatal beagles implanted gliosarcoma without therapy (Group II) and 3 normal controls without tumor (Group III) were subjected to the same follow-up studies. (Results) (1) Neonatal beagles with implanted tumor showed moderate degree of ventricular dilatation within a short period. The finding of communicating hydrocephalus was interpreted as initial growth of tumor. (2) Animals after therapy had variable cavitation in the hemisphere that had contained calcium deposit on CT. Moderate dilatation of the lateral ventricle was present without any significant midline shift and there was an area of porencephaly extending out from the right lateral ventricle on CT (Fig. 1, Case 2). Cerebral angiography demonstrated hydrocephalus with an avascular region in the right cerebral hemisphere, compatible with the previously described porencephalic cyst (Fig. 2, Case 2). (3) Three cases out of 7 showed neurological symptoms after tumor implantation (Cases 3, 5 and 6). Carotid angiography showed large temporal lobe tumor with some tumor stain and also some involvement of the right frontal lobe after therapy (Fig. 7, Case 3). In postmortem examination, there was tumor seen coating the right lateral ventricle as well as the left temporal horn. The right cerebral hemisphere was slightly smaller than the left. The left lateral ventricle was remarkably enlarged (Fig. 9). (4) Four out of 7 treated animals with injected gliosarcoma showed no evidence of tumor at postmortem examination. CT demonstrated moderate dilatation of the lateral ventricle without any significant midline shift, an area of porencephaly and definite decrease in size of the right cerebral hemisphere and calvarium (Fig. 4). (5) Fifteen neonatal beagles implanted gliosarcoma without therapy (Group II) developed symptomatic and died within two weeks. (6) Control animals showed no ventricular dilatation or other abnormalities. (7) Microscopic examinations showed no similarities between implanted gliosarcoma and human glioblastoma. (Conclusion) Serial CT scans and magnification cerebral angiography in this experimental model appear extremely helpful in following the effects of therapy and important tool for the evaluation of a tumor growth or regression.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the functional and anatomical asymmetries on the frontal and parietal lobes.

Abstract
Vein pouches obtained from the external jugular vein were used to create experimental aneurysms on the carotid arteries of 13 rabbits and the abdominal aortas of 18 rabbits. Eighteen of these vein pouch aneurysms were grafted onto a linear incision in the artery; 13 of the aneurysms were grafted onto an elliptical incision. In 4 of the rabbits in which the vein pouch was grafted onto an elliptical arteriotomy in the carotid, a new approach for producing an intracranial aneurysm was attempted by relocating the aneurysm segment to the subarachnoid space at the cranial vertex. The results indicate that the aneurysms grafted onto an elliptical arteriotomy had a higher patency rate than the aneurysms grafted onto a linear arteriotomy in both the aortic and carotid models. Also, the attempt to produce an intracranial model demonstrated that short-term patency of the aneurysms could be achieved and that a two-stage approach to creating such aneurysms would be more appropriate than a one-stage approach.

Gray scale ultrasound identified the lateral and third ventricles, basal ganglia, columns of the fornix, and the suprasellar optic system of monkeys with craniotomy defects. Needles were placed in these structures under ultrasound guidance. Radiographs and formalin fixed brain sections confirmed the expected position of the needle tracts.

Abstract
A method allowing accurate and repeated measurements of vessel wall thickness has been developed. It consists of permanent opacification of the outer wall with tantalum in conjunction with magnification angiography. The technique was tested in a model, in human saphenous vein specimens, and in long-term experiments in rabbit blood vessels. Eighteen rabbits underwent exploratory surgery, after which the abdominal aorta, inferior vena cave, and the femoral and carotid arteries were coated with tantalum paste. Subsequently, magnification angiograms were performed from one to 14 months later. The wall thickness ranging between 100 and 300 micron was clearly visualized. While no gross inflammatory or foreign body reaction was seen, small granulomata adjacent to the blood vessels were frequently identified. The method described can be valuable in studying the natural history of the atherosclerotic process, particularly the behavior of vascular grafts.

Abstract
We have assessed the effects of antigenic stimulation on the regional blood flow of the lymph node. In seventeen New Zealand white rabbits, the regional blood flow to the popliteal lymph nodes was determined using 9 and 15 micron microspheres at 16, 40, and 144 h following antigen administration. The regional blood flow in the resting lymph node measured with 15 micron spheres was 0 . 46 +/- 0 . 07 ml g-1 min-1, with 9 micron spheres 0 . 26 +/- 0 . 03 ml g-1 min-1. There was a significant 'differential flow' (the difference in blood flow between the experimental and control nodes) measured with 15 micron spheres (P less than 0 . 05). This increase in blood flow was larger early (16 h) than late (144 h) following antigen administration (P less than 0 . 01). There was significant (P less than 0 . 05) 'shunt flow' (the difference in blood flow measured with 15 micron and 9 micron spheres) in the lymph node, with more shunting early (16 h) than late (144 h) following antigen administration. No significant shunting was seen in the kidney or thigh muscle. Thus, we have established: (1) a significant increase in blood flow following antigenic stimulus; (2) shunting of 9 micron microspheres in the resting popliteal lymph node; (3) increased shunting following antigenic stimulus; and (4) that the increase in nodal blood flow was, to a large extent, secondary to increased shunt flow. Both the increased blood flow and the shunting shortly after antigenic stimulus may be important in the evolution of the immune response.

Abstract
Intracranial aneurysm rarely causes endocrinopathy clinically, however, many laboratory data show abnormality concerning endocrine function. To elucidate the reasons of these endocrine dysfunction, the authors investigated several representative patients in our department and the reported cases. The major part of reported cases suggests that the direct kinetic effect of aneurysms on the hypothalamopituitary system resulted in the endocrinopathy. The common features are described as follows. 1) Aneurysm were of large size. 2) Most aneurysms were located at the intracranial internal carotid artery. 3) They had no previous history of SAH usually. 4) Visual impairment was one of the common manifestation among them. 5) The higher frequency of the reported pituitary dysfunction in laboratory examination was shown in the following turn. However, some of our cases did not always agree with the reported ones. SAH operation etc. were considered to be the reasons of this discrepancy.
