Abstract
Approximately 1-2% of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation have an acute ischemic stroke (AIS) while on direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) treatment every year. However, current evidence on stroke subtypes, pathophysiology and factors leading to the failure of DOAC preventive therapy in a "real world" setting is still scanty. This study aimed at investigating whether there is any relationship between DOAC plasma levels and the stroke occurrence, on the basis of the phenotypic classification and pathophysiology of the stroke, in a cohort of DOAC-treated patients admitted to our hospital for AIS over 1-year period. A total of 28 patients had DOAC plasma levels determined in emergency and were included in the study, nine patients receiving dabigatran, 11 rivaroxaban and 8 apixaban. The DOAC levels were low in 8/28 patients (28.6% of the sample), intermediate in 4 (14.3%) and high in 16 (57.1%). The most prevalent stroke subtype was the small vessel disease, according to the A-S-C-O phenotypic classification, in 53.6% of our sample. The most common clinical presentation was "minor stroke" in 71.4% of the cases. There was a significantly higher proportion of patients with high DOAC levels in the small vessel group, compared to the cardioembolic group without other phenotypes. The question arises as to the most suitable clinical management of AIS in these patients on DOACs. In the current absence of clear evidence, taking into account the DOAC levels (low/intermediate/high) and the underlying stroke pathophysiology, we present a flowchart of our proposed clinical management of ischemic stroke in patients while on DOAC.

Abstract
Electrical storm (ES) describes the rapidly clustering ventricular fibrillation (VF) that requires multiple cardioversions. Emerging evidence suggests that Purkinje arborization and sympathetic nerve regeneration play a major role in initiating malignant arrhythmias. We report the case of two patients who, after having survived an acute myocardial infarction (MI), developed repetitive episodes of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and VF one week after percutaneous revascularization, triggered by monomorphic premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). Owing to repetitive and drug-refractory VF episodes, temporary atrial overdrive pacing was attempted with complete suppression of VF. In the following month, recurrence of ventricular arrhythmia was inversely related to the atrial pacing rate. Although antiarrhythmic drugs other than beta-blockers had been discontinued, neither PVCs nor ventricular arrhythmias recurred at one-month follow-up when the lower pacing rate was set at 60 bpm. In conclusion in these patients, ES was likely related to nerve sprouting after ischemic injury. This chaotic phenomenon occurs early after tissue damage and shows a peak seven days after acute MI with degeneration of superfluous axon branches. High pacing rates can reduce early after depolarizations and suppress PVCs, thus preventing ES. On these grounds, ES patients may be treated with temporary overdrive pacing rather than early radiofrequency ablation.

Abstract
AIMS Cardiac resynchronization therapy is currently used in selected patients with end-stage heart failure. However, 30% of patients do not respond to CRT. The aim of our study was to find echocardiographic (TDI), electrocardiographic (QRS interval and electric distance between right and left catheter), clinical (6MW test) or autonomical (HRV) parameters able to predict responsiveness to CRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS 47 patients (mean age 74+/-10 years) with end-stage heart failure, symptomatic, with left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction less than 35% and QRS 120 ms, underwent CRT. RESULTS At thirteen months follow up, all clinical and echocardiographic parameters significantly improves (EF p<0.001; LVED volume p<0.001; 6MWT p<0.001; max delay TDI p<0.001; HRV p<0.05; Right-left distance p<0.05). A positive response was documented in 31/47 (67.4%) patients who presented an increase in LVEF > or = 5 units. There was a significant difference of LVED diameter (p<0.05) and HRV (p<0.05) between responders and non responders. Receiver-operating curve analysis showed that a positive response to CRT may be predicted in patients with LVED diameter <67 mm (with a sensitivity of 77% and a specificity of 88%). CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm the clinical improvement obtained by CRT in end-stage heart failure patients as well as the limited value of QRS duration and intraventricular dyssynchrony as predictor of clinical recovery after CRT. While a most-advanced clinical stage of disease (HRV) without an advance left ventricular remodeling (LVED diameter) demonstrated to predict response to CRT, with sensitivity of 77% and specificity of 88%.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM To evaluate cardiovascular abnormalities in highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) treated HIV patients with no signs or symptoms of cardiovascular impairment, and to assess the relative role of multiple concomitant risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS Forty-four consecutive HIV subjects (mean age 41+/-6 yrs) were enrolled. Inclusion criteria were HIV infection, CD4+cell count>150/ml, HAART treatment for at least 4 years. Metabolic serum levels, morphological and functional echocardiographic parameters were assessed in all subjects. Sixteen healthy age and sex matched subjects with no cardiovascular risk factors were recruited as controls. HIV patients showed increased left ventricular mass index with reduced mid-wall fractional shortening (mFS) when compared to controls (50.2+/-10.5 vs. 38.6+/-14.4, p=0.05 and 18.3+/-0.6 vs. 21.9+/-0.7, p<0.05, respectively). Twenty-nine patients were lipodystrophic (LD) and showed a longer HAART period (p=0.0004) and greater use of protease inhibitors (PI) (p=0.001). Coronary flow reserve (CFR) was significantly reduced in HIV patients as compared to controls (p<0.0001), as it was in LD subjects when compared to non-lipodystrophic ones (NLD) (p<0.001). Adiponectin concentrations were found to be significantly lower in LD subjects than in NLD ones (7.8+/-0.8 vs. 13.8+/-1.2 microg/ml, p=0.01), and showed a direct correlation with CFR. In multiple regression analysis, insulin, HDL and adiponectin accounted for 63% of CFR variations. CONCLUSIONS Left ventricular hypertrophy, depressed mFS and reduced CFR represent the main signs of subclinical cardiac damage in HIV subjects treated with HAART. Hypoadiponectinemia in these subjects seems to be a metabolic risk factor of cardiovascular impairment.

Abstract
Primary percutaneous coronary intervention of the culprit lesion is the treatment of choice for acute myocardial infarction, while treatment of the severe non culprit lesion is not indicated in the guidelines (Class III indication). More aggressive strategies that include initial treatment of the severe non culprit lesion may reduce the incidence of delayed occlusions in specific clinical settings. The two cases we describe support our point of view.

Abstract
We present the case of a 32-year-old white man seen for evaluation of pancytopenia 12 years after thoracolumbar myeloresection of intramedullary ependymoma. Bone marrow examination revealed extensive marrow fibrosis and tumor infiltrate compatible with metastatic ependymoma. Myelophthisic anemia due to metastatic ependymoma, though not previously reported, should be entertained in the differential workup for pancytopenia.

Abstract
Cytogenetic analysis was performed in 4860 chorionic villus samples by means of both direct preparation and long-term culture. The results of the analysis were compared with a classification including all theoretical types of combinations between the chromosomal constitution of the cytotrophoblast, extraembryonal mesoderm, and fetus, with the aim of evaluating the cytogenetic variability along the trophoblast-embryo axis. Eighteen of 29 possible combinations were found demonstrating a considerable heterogeneity. A mosaic conceptus was found in 1.5 per cent of cases, with generalized mosaicisms and confined mosaicisms in 0.2 and 1.3 per cent, respectively. Cytogenetic variability along the trophoblast-embryo axis was found in 1.42 per cent of cases. Results possibly leading to diagnostic errors (false-positive and false-negative results) were found in only 1.38 per cent. False-positive results of direct preparation were the most commonly observed discrepancy (0.8 per cent), while the incidence of false-positive results of the culture method and of both methods was 0.31 and 0.16 per cent respectively. The incidence of false-negative results was 0.1 per cent, with false-negative results of direct preparation 0.08 per cent and false-negative results of both methods 0.02 per cent. False-negative results of the culture method were not found. Our data confirm the high diagnostic accuracy of chorionic villus sampling and the utility of the combined use of the two methods in minimizing diagnostic errors and in reducing the need for follow-up amniocentesis.

Abstract
An electrochemical assay of lecithin for the prediction of foetal lung maturity in normal and complicated pregnancies has been analytically evaluated. The method is based on sequential enzymatic reactions causing the stoichiometric transformation of lecithin to hydrogen peroxide, which reacts with an organo-fluoro compound in the presence of peroxidase. The rupture of the C-F bond releases fluoride ions, that are detected by a selective electrode. The correlation between the lecithin concentration in amniotic fluid, measured electrochemically, and the fluorescence polarization (FP) value, chosen as reference method, was determined. Correlation studies were performed on rat amniotic fluids, on 67 samples from human normal pregnancies, and on seven samples from complicated pregnancies. The relationships between the FP value and the lecithin concentration were linear, and the correlation coefficients were 0.987 for rat and 0.884 for human amniotic fluids. Concordance was good for predicting foetal lung maturity in complicated pregnancies.

Abstract
A retrospective cohort study was performed in five Italian obstetrical centres from 1984 to 1991 in order to verify the association between chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and transverse limb reduction defects (TLRDs). TLRD rates by period of gestation at CVS were calculated, and the study's results were compared with data from the general population. Of the 3430 pregnancies for which CVS was performed, 2759 had a known outcome. The overall rate for TLRDs was 1 in 1143 CVS pregnancies, four times higher than that of the general population in Italy (1 in 4458). The rate of TLRDs was 2.9/1000 for CVS performed at 9 weeks' gestation and 1.0/1000 for CVS at 10 weeks' gestation. A scalp defect was detected in a pregnancy in which CVS was performed at 10 weeks. A high proportion of pregnancies lost to follow-up and the poor quality of the data may have affected the results. Nevertheless, our results suggest an association between CVS carried out at less than 10 weeks' gestation and TLRDs which is consistent with the findings of other studies. CVS should not be prepared at less than 10 weeks' gestation until additional evidence is obtained.

Abstract
Cytogenetic data about 145 chorionic villus samples obtained between the 13th and 35th week of gestation are reported. 'Late' chorionic villus sampling (CVS) was used to resolve different situations: failed amniotic fluid cell cultures (5 cases); confirmation of an abnormal karyotype, previously diagnosed as mosaic (14 cases); and ultrasound fetal malformation (23 cases). Most of the samples (103 cases) were analysed for the classical indications and in these cases, the principal aim was to obtain a rapid fetal karyotype. Excluding the cases used to check fetal karyotype, a chromosomal aberration was found in 11 out of 131 biopsies. In four cases of the group in which the fetal karyotype was checked (14 cases), the pathology observed at the first diagnosis was confirmed, while in the remaining ten cases the anomaly was not observed.

Abstract
Fluorescence polarization of the amniotic fluid from 39 high risk pregnancies requiring preterm delivery was measured in order to assess the maturity of the fetal lung. The study population included 15 cases of intrauterine growth retardation, ten maternal hypertension, five maternal Hodgkin's disease, three placenta previa, two fetal malformation, two polyamnios, one untreated diabetes, one maternal nephropathy. All patients underwent a single amniocentesis before deciding whether to deliver a preterm baby and FP of the amniotic fluid was done within two hours from amniocentesis. In five cases this was > 0.311, the cut-off limit taken as an indicator of fetal pulmonary status, and three of these developed respiratory distress syndrome. In 34 cases FP values were < or = 0.311; in spite of the apparent lung maturity two of these newborns developed respiratory distress syndrome. On the basis of these results the FP sensitivity was calculated as 60%, specificity 94% and the overall accuracy 90%.

Abstract
This paper describes a family of Central Italian origin in which three patients in two generations had either thalassaemia intermedia or a late presenting form of thalassaemia major. Sequence analysis of the patients' DNA revealed that only one of the beta-globin genes was affected by a beta-thalassaemia mutation (the codon 39 nonsense mutation), the other being completely normal, apart from the complex rearrangement (-T +ATA) at position -530 5' to the CAP site of the beta-globin gene, which has uncertain clinical significance. Haematologically, all these patients were characterized by unusually low HbF levels (1.8-7.3%) for a beta-thalassaemia major or intermedia phenotype. The mother of the two patients with thalassaemia intermedia was heterozygous for beta-thalassaemia (codon 39 nonsense mutation), while the father had thalassaemia-like red cell indices, an increased alpha/non alpha chain synthesis ratio, a slight increase of HbF and a low HbA2 level, but showed entirely normal beta-globin gene sequences, apart from the complex rearrangement (-T +ATA) at position -530 5' to the CAP site. One of the thalassaemia intermedia patients married a normal woman and they had a child with thalassaemia major who inherited only the codon 39 nonsense mutation but not the complex rearrangement at position -530. The clinical phenotype of thalassaemia-intermedia or major in the patients from this family may be explained by postulating the inheritance of the double heterozygous state for beta-thalassaemia and for a mutation in a gene coding for an erythroid-specific DNA binding protein which may impair the function of the normal beta-globin gene. Heterozygosity for this postulated mutation (father of the patients with thalassaemia intermedia) may result in the production of a beta-thalassaemia carrier state with normal HbA2 level.

Abstract
This study describes a patient with a thalassemia intermedia-like phenotype in whom beta-globin gene sequencing detected a novel abnormal hemoglobin (Hb) due to a T-C substitution at codon 114 of the beta-globin gene arising as a de novo mutation. The abnormal variant was designated Hb Brescia after the place of birth of the propositus. Normal sequences were detected at the in trans beta-globin locus. In addition, alpha-globin gene analysis detected a triple alpha-globin locus which was inherited from the father. The T-C change at position 114 of the beta-globin gene results in a leucine to proline substitution (Leu-Pro) in the G-helix. The resulting Hb tetramer is highly unstable and precipitates forming inclusion bodies in the peripheral red blood cells. Moreover, the Leu-Pro substitution interferes negatively with the four alpha 1 beta 1 contact points of the G-helix most likely adversely affecting the alpha beta dimer formation. The very severe phenotype presented by our patient is unusual in a heterozygote for an unstable Hb variant and may be explained by the coinheritance of the triple alpha-globin locus.

Abstract
In this study, we have defined by dot-blot analysis with allelic specific oligonucleotide probes or direct sequencing on amplified DNA the beta-thalassemia mutations in a large group of patients (23) of Italian descent with thalassemia intermedia. These patients had one parent with either the silent beta-thalassemia carrier phenotype or borderline-normal hemoglobin A2 (HbA2) levels (2.5% to 3.5%). Nearly all were genetic compounds for a severe beta-thalassemia mutation and a beta-thalassemia mutation associated with high residual output of beta-globin chains (beta + intervening sequence [IVS]-I-nt6, beta -87, beta -101), indicating that inheritance of a mild beta-thalassemia allele, even in a single dose, is the most common molecular mechanism producing thalassemia intermedia in the Italian population. In three cases, in whom we failed to define by dot-blot analysis the mutations, we sequenced the beta + globin gene and found three novel beta-thalassemia mutations, which are certainly very rare because they have been hitherto detected solely in a single patient. These mutations consist of: (1) a T-A substitution at position 2 of IVS-I, in a patient compound heterozygote for this mutation and the -87 promoter mutation; (2) a G-C substitution at position 844 of IVS-II, in a patient heterozygous for this mutation who showed normal sequences at the in trans beta-globin gene (The reason for the presence of clinical manifestations in a beta-thalassemia heterozygote has not been defined.); and (3) a deletion of one nucleotide (-T) at codon 126, resulting in a frameshift and readthrough of the 5' untranslated region and most likely producing an elongated Hb molecule of 156 amino acid residues, in a patient heterozygous for this mutation with normal beta-globin gene sequences at the other locus.

Abstract
This paper reviews the molecular pathology of a heterogeneous group of beta-thalassemia heterozygotes which may be referred to as atypical beta-thalassemia. This group includes four different categories of heterozygous beta-thalassemia, which are characterized, respectively, by (1) normal MCV and MCH; (2) normal Hb A2; (3) normal MCV, MCH, and Hb A2 and imbalanced globin chain synthesis only or, (4) the presence of clinical manifestations. The first group is represented by a limited proportion of double heterozygotes for alpha- and beta-thalassemia. The second group includes two categories. One category is double heterozygotes for delta- and beta-thalassemia with the delta-thalassemia mutation in cis or in trans to beta-thalassemia. A number of delta-thalassemia mutations which produce this phenotype by interacting with beta-thalassemia have been described. The other category within the second group is heterozygotes for some mild beta(+)-thalassemia mutations. Within the third group, conclusive evidence for a mutation within the beta-globin gene cluster producing the silent beta-thalassemia phenotype has been obtained solely for a C----T substitution at -101 within the CACCC box of the beta-globin gene. Possible candidates are the complex rearrangements (-T, +ATA; -T, +ATATA) found at position -530 from the cap site. In the group of thalassemic hemoglobinopathies, a series of mutations mostly located in the third exon and producing elongated or truncated molecules have been recently reported. Most of the mutations are silent at the protein level, produce inclusion bodies in peripheral erythrocytes, and show a dominant transmission pattern or occur sporadically.

Abstract
The variation of amniotic fluid microviscosity with gestational age was measured in rat, rabbit, and guinea pig. In rat, the changes followed the same pattern as known for women, microviscosity being high during early and mid-gestation and markedly lowering 12 h before delivery. Surprisingly, an opposite trend was observed in rabbit and guinea pig amniotic fluid. Moreover, the lecithin to sphingomyelin ratio markedly rose in late gestation in all species considered. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of lipids and phospholipids were performed in woman and rabbit amniotic fluids at early and late gestational ages. Among all the parameters measured, the most important differences that can influence the amniotic fluid microviscosity are the presence of very high levels of lysophosphatidylcholine both in early and late gestation in rabbit (much higher than in woman) and the cholesterol to total phospholipid ratio which decreased with gestational age in woman but remained stable in rabbit. The Arrhenius plot of the logarithm of microviscosity against the reciprocal of absolute temperature of mature and immature amniotic fluids from woman and rabbit was also determined. The temperature profiles confirmed the differences in lipid profile between woman and rabbit in early and late gestation which could be quantified on a physicochemical basis by determining the activation energy (delta E) at 25 degrees and 37 degrees C for each curve. This confirmed the opposite patterns in woman and rabbit and showed that amniotic fluid from the immature rabbit was the most fluid.

Abstract
This paper describes four families of Italian descent in each of which the propositus had the clinical phenotype of thalassaemia intermedia, resulting from the compound heterozygous state for high HbA2 beta thalassaemia and type I silent beta thalassaemia. Direct sequencing on amplified DNA and/or oligonucleotide analysis detected, in all families but one, the compound heterozygous state for codon 39 nonsense mutation and the C-T substitution at position -101 in the distal CACCC box of the beta-globin gene promoter (beta th-101). Members of these families who are heterozygous for high HbA2 beta thalassaemia showed the codon 39 nonsense mutation, while those with the clinical phenotype of silent beta thalassaemia had the beta th-101 mutation. In the remaining family, the propositus and one of his siblings had the compound heterozygous state for a molecularly undefined high HbA2 beta thalassaemia and the beta th-101 mutation in combination with the triple alpha globin gene arrangement. These patients showed a more severe thalassaemia intermedia like clinical phenotype as compared to those with the same beta-globin genotype and a normal alpha-globin gene arrangement. In the families investigated the beta th-101 was always associated with haplotype I. A group of patients with thalassaemia intermedia from Southern Italy, either homozygous or heterozygous for haplotype I and in whom previous studies had failed to define the mutation in one of the beta thalassaemia globin genes, were screened by oligonucleotide analysis for the presence of the beta th-101. Three out of nine were positive. These results indicate that the beta th-101 mutation is a common cause of the type I silent beta thalassaemia phenotype in the Southern Italian population.

Abstract
beta-D-N-Acetylglucosaminidase isozymes were separated and assayed in the plasma of control healthy individuals and pregnant women by an automated method consisting in chromatofocusing on polybuffer exchanger PBE-94 column, flow-through fluorimetric determination of activity and computer assisted quantification. Under the established optimal conditions the method fractionated beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase into four isozymes. A, I2, I1 and B, with the analytical coefficients of variation of 1.8, 2.2, 6.4 and 4.1%, respectively. Duration of a single analysis was 25 min including washing, and 10-15 successive runs could be performed on the same column with good reproducibility. A linear activity response was observed from 1-5 microliters of plasma (depending on the individual isozyme) to 50 microliters, and the detection limit was 0.016 mUnits. Isozyme A was heat labile. Upon sialidase treatment, isozymes A, I2 and I1 released sialic acid and were eluted from the column at less acidic pHs. In healthy individuals isozymes A, I2, I1 and B covered about 62.8, 6.9, 15.0 and 15.1% of the total beta-D-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase activity, respectively. During pregnancy the plasma concentration of all isozymes increased. Isozyme I2 showed the highest enhancement (30-fold), followed by I1 (8-fold), B (5.6-fold) and A (3-fold). Interruption of pregnancy by either physiological delivery or ambulatory abortion was followed by a sharp fall of the concentration of all isozymes reaching, in a few days, the control levels.

Abstract
An electrochemical method is described for the determination of lecithin in rat and human amniotic fluid. Choline is released from lecithin enzymatically by phospholipase D and the hydrogen peroxide released by the action of choline oxidase is quantitatively determined by peroxidase-catalyzed rupture of the covalent C-F bond of 4-fluorophenol. The concentration of F- ions in solutions is determined by a fluoride sensitive electrode from the resulting cell potential difference recorded before and 10 min after addition of a solution containing phospholipase D, choline oxidase and horseradish peroxidase. Lecithin levels in rat amniotic fluid increased from about 10 mumol/l on the 20th day of gestation to 80 mumol/l on day 21, which corresponds to the time of spontaneous delivery. In human amniotic fluid the lecithin concentrations determined with this new method parallel those already reported. They were approximately 10 to 50 mumol/l between the 15th and 18th weeks of gestation and increased from 5- to 7-fold between the 37th and 41st weeks of pregnancy. This method was only slightly influenced by the presence of blood or meconium contamination in the amniotic fluid.

Abstract
The isoenzyme pattern of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) was determined in the amniotic fluid of 75 women undergoing amniocentesis for genetic indications. In the amniotic fluid and in the newborn's urine the NAG was completely different from that in adult urine, indicating the presence of a fetal isoenzymatic form also present in the first stage of life.

Abstract
This paper describes 18 months' experience of direct chromosome analysis applied to villi aspirated during the first trimester, using a catheter inserted trans-cervically. A total of 325 biopsy samples were analysed, and there was a diagnostic failure in 6 of these cases (1.8%). An abnormal karyotype was detected in 12 cases (3.8%); three of them were chromosome mosaics not confirmed on amniotic fluid cultures drawn between the 16th and 18th week of gestation. Cytogenetic control was performed on fetal tissues after voluntary abortion. There was a karyotype discrepancy between the placenta and the fetus in two cases out of the 12 mentioned above.

Abstract
We report a case in which a discrepancy emerged between the prenatal diagnosis of female chromosomal sex and male sex at ultrasound examination. The FSH dosage performed on an amniotic fluid sample previously stored confirmed the male phenotype of the fetus. The effectiveness of the AF-FSH level dosage in prenatal diagnosis was taken into consideration.

Abstract
The following enzymes of lysosomal origin were fluorimetrically determined in maternal plasma from the second to the ninth month of pregnancy at 1-mth intervals: beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase (EC 3.2.1.30), beta-D-glucuronidase (EC 3.2.1.31), beta-D-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.21), beta-D-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.22), alpha-D-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23), alpha-L-fucosidase (EC 3.2.1.51) and alpha-D-mannosidase (EC 3.2.1.24) (pH 4.0). As reference microsomal alpha-D-mannosidase (pH 5.7) was also studied. Thirty-eight healthy women, aged 18-37 yr, who had a normal pregnancy followed by normal parturition, were studied. All enzymes, with the only exception of beta-D-galactosidase, showed a progressive and statistically significant increase of activity throughout pregnancy. At the end of pregnancy, the increase ranged from a maximum of 5.6-fold for beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase to a minimum of 0.55-fold for alpha-D-mannosidase, pH 5.7. In the case of beta-D-N-acetylglucosaminidase, the level at the fifth month of pregnancy was significantly higher than that at the third month, and from the sixth to the ninth month each level significantly differed from that of the month immediately preceding.

Abstract
In order to evaluate the cytogenetic findings previously obtained on induced abortions in women exposed to 2,3,7,8 tetrachlorodibenzo-p-Dioxim (TCDD) after the Seveso accident, chromosome analyses were carried out on a comparable control sample. The frequencies of aberrant cells, the relative proportions of individual types of chromosome aberration, the average number of lesions per damaged cell, and the frequencies of polyploids do not differ significantly in maternal blood and placenta in the two samples. A highly significant increase in the frequencies of aberrant cells and in the average number of aberrations per damaged cell was found in the fetal tissues in the group of exposed pregnancies. A noticeable feature of the data on the frequencies of cells with aberrations is the marked variability among individuals within tissues and within samples. On the basis of these results, the authors point to the need to continue cytogenetic investigations on interrupted pregnancies in TCDD-exposed and nonexposed women.

Abstract
A new case of haemolytic disease of the newborn due to anti-Fya antibodies is described. The maternal alloimmunization was related to a previous blood transfusion. The patient, her previous child and the donor of the blood transfused were tested. Foetal condition was monitored by measuring bilirubin in amniotic fluid on three different occasions during pregnancy. The infant developed a mild haemolytic disease that required treatment only with phototherapy.
