Abstract
Biodiversity is essential for the functioning of ecosystems and the provision of services. In recent years, the role of plantations in mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration has been highlighted. In the Mediterranean area, high-density poplar plantations in short-rotation with resprouting management (SRC) have been established for biomass purposes on mostly irrigated agricultural land, coexisting with rainfed and irrigated agricultural crops. This study aims to assess the contribution of these plantations to this type of agroforest ecosystem in terms of biodiversity. For this purpose, both flora and fauna diversity were evaluated both within and outside of the plantation. Additionally, the accumulated carbon in the biomass, as well as in the accompanying vegetation within the plantation, was assessed. Different indices were used to evaluate both the intrinsic diversity of the forest plantation and the degree of substitution and complementarity between the different communities of the landscape. Our findings reveal distinct biodiversity patterns in the land-use scenarios sampled. Specifically, we observed significantly higher flora-species richness in SRC plantations than in the adjacent agricultural land, whereas fauna richness showed a similar but slightly higher level in the forested area. A moderate level of complementarity between land uses was found for insects and mammals (around 45 %), contrasting with high complementarity for birds (87 %) and flora (90 %). This suggests substantial turnover and replacement among these ecological environments. Our results indicate that a second rotation (4 year) plantation could accumulate a total of 61.6 Mg C ha-1, and even though adventitious flora represents <2 % of the total carbon accumulated, its importance in providing ecosystem services is considerable. Hence, these findings evidence the fact that SRC poplar plantations can enhance biodiversity in Mediterranean agroforest ecosystems and actively contribute to various provisioning ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, reflecting a multi-objective approach that extends beyond biomass production.

Abstract
Muscle gross lesions, associated to parasites, were routinely found during self-inspection in a Spanish fish plant processing Atlantic swordfish. To determine the taxonomic status of these parasites, molecular analysis was performed based on 18S, ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2 and 28S rDNA sequences, obtaining a consensus sequences of 4581 bp for the cestode and 4200 bp for the trematode. Taxonomic affiliation was determined by phylogenetic analysis of combined SSU + LSU rDNA regions using maximum likelihood models. Molecular characterization allows us to identify the trematode Maccallumtrema xiphiados and the cestode Molicola sp. infecting the musculature of the Atlantic swordfish. Both parasites are responsible of significant economic loss to fish industry due to commercial rejection of parasitized products.

Abstract
The effectiveness of a Geographical Information Systems cost-distance tool for detecting landscape permeability in relation to the movement of pests in olive landscapes was established. The simplification of agricultural systems is linked to an increased incidence of pests on crops. Therefore, it is important to understand the impact of different land uses surrounding olive groves on pests. In this work, we analysed the effect of the structure of the olive landscape on the movement of two main olive pests-the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae) and the olive moth, Prays oleae (Bernard) (Lepidopetera: Praydidae). We applied linear mixed effects models to analyse the relationship between pest abundance and cost-distance, using different hypotheses to evaluate those land uses that are favourable or unfavourable for the movement of these pests. The results show that this methodology is effective in detecting possible unfavourable land uses with a barrier effect, such as woodland and artificial land uses, and favourable land uses with a corridor effect such as olive groves. Whether other land uses, such as scrubland or riverbanks, act as a barrier or corridor depends on the pest and its life cycle stage. The effect that different land uses have in maintaining low levels of pest populations and ensuring the long-term sustainability of these agricultural systems are discussed. The implications of landscape permeability for the physical structure of the landscape and the dispersal of organisms, and the potential of that landscape to impact the continuous flow of natural processes are also addressed.

Abstract
The presence of emergent visible parasites at commercial valuable fish species is increasingly causing problems at fisheries and seafood industries. Microsporidians have been previously reported to appear forming apparent xenomas complexes in anglerfish species, but no effort has been carried out to simultaneously integrate epidemiological data, phenotypic, genotypic and fine structural characterizations in the same parasite sample. In this work, specimens of Lophius budegassa and Lophius piscatorius from NE Atlantic waters were sampled and examined to provide information about specific site of infection and demographic data of two groups of different sizes of xenomas present at both fish species. Histological descriptions and scanning and transmission electron microscopy were carried out on fresh spores of Lophius budegassa for ultrastructural studies. In both types of xenomas, it was observed simultaneously the microsporidian genus Spraguea in the form of two different types of spores. Molecular analyses of both xenomas from the two fish species, based on the small subunit ribosomal DNA gene, were also performed to genetically support the morphological diagnostic provided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare rSO2 (muscle oxygen saturation index) static and dynamic variables obtained by NIRS (Near Infrared Spectroscopy) in brachioradialis muscle of septic shock patients and its prognostic implications. DESIGN Prospective and observational study. SETTING Intensive care unit. SUBJECTS Septic shock patients and healthy volunteers. INTERVENTIONS The probe of a NIRS device (INVOS 5100) was placed on the brachioradialis muscle during a vascular occlusion test (VOT). VARIABLES Baseline, minimum and maximum rSO2 values, deoxygenation rate (DeOx), reoxygenation slope (ReOx) and delta value. RESULTS Septic shock patients (n=35) had lower baseline rSO2 (63.8±12.2 vs. 69.3±3.3%, p<0.05), slower DeOx (-0.54±0.31 vs. -0.91±0.35%/s, p=0.001), slower ReOx (2.67±2.17 vs. 9.46±3.5%/s, p<0.001) and lower delta (3.25±5.71 vs. 15.1±3.9%, p<0.001) when compared to healthy subjects (n=20). Among septic shock patients, non-survivors showed lower baseline rSO2 (57.0±9.6 vs. 69.8±11.3%, p=0.001), lower minimum rSO2 (36.0±12.8 vs. 51.3±14.8%, p<0.01) and lower maximum rSO2 values (60.6±10.6 vs. 73.3±11.2%, p<0.01). Baseline rSO2 was a good mortality predictor (AUC 0.79; 95%CI: 0.63-0.94, p<0.01). Dynamic parameters obtained with VOT did not improve the results. CONCLUSION Septic shock patients present an important alteration of microcirculation that can be evaluated by NIRS with prognostic implications. Monitoring microvascular reactivity in the brachioradialis muscle using VOT with our device does not seem to improve the prognostic value of baseline rSO2.

Abstract
Spawning individuals of allis shad, Alosa alosa (Linnaeus, 1758), and twaite shad, Alosa fallax (Lacépède, 1803), were sampled from three rivers on the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula (Ulla, Minho, Mondego) during 2008 to 2013 to assess the presence of the zoonotic marine parasite Anisakis spp. larvae. The results revealed that both shad species were infected by third-larval stage Anisakis simplex s.s. and Anisakis pegreffii. The latter is reported in mixed infections in both shad species of Western Iberian Peninsula for the first time. In A. alosa, the prevalence of Anisakis infection can reach 100%, while in A. fallax, prevalence was up to 83%. Infected individuals of the former species also often contain much higher number of parasites in theirs internal organs and flesh: from 1 to 1138 Anisakis spp. larvae as compared to 1 to 121 larvae, respectively. In general, numbers of A. pegreffii were higher than those of A. simplex s.s. Our results suggest that in the marine environment of the Western Iberian Peninsula, both anadromous shad species act as paratenic hosts for A. simplex s.s. and A. pegreffii, thus widening the distribution of the infective nematode larvae from the marine to the freshwater ecosystem. This finding is of great epidemiological relevance for wildlife managers and consumers, considering the zoonotic and gastroallergic threats posed of these parasites.

Abstract
In the mesozooplanktonic community of the coastal upwelling system of the Ría de Vigo (NW Spain), the euphausiid Nyctiphanes couchii has been identified for the first time in temperate waters of the NE Atlantic as the intermediate host for cystacanths of Rhadinorhynchus sp. Parasites were identified using morphological characters described in 20 cystacanths. The hooks of the proboscis were arranged in 14 rows of 26 hooks each, while the hooks of the basal circle were only slightly erected and were longer than remaining spines. A maximum-likelihood estimation (ML) tree inferred from the 18S rRNA data set of Palaeacantocephala revealed that our specimens belong to a highly supported clade with Rhadinorhynchus sp., Pararhadinorhynchus sp. and Transvena annulospinosa. Nonetheless, our morphological and phylogenetic analyses suggested that the status of Rhadinorhynchus pristis should be re-examined. The prevalences of parasites were 0.0019% and 0.0001% for frontal and coastal summer communities, and 0.0068% and 0.0008% for coastal and oceanic autumn communities, respectively. The presence of these cystacanths in different mesozooplankton communities throughout the study suggests that the recruitment of parasites may be affected by the oceanography.

Abstract
Mesenteric vein thrombosis is a rare complication of bariatric laparoscopic surgery. We report a case of a 47-year-old man with obesity who had mesenteric vein thrombosis 14 days after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. He was treated with heparin anticoagulation with a good therapeutic response. This case and literature review illustrate that mesenteric vein thrombosis has to be included in the differential diagnosis of abdominal pain after a bariatric procedure and listed formally as a complication of bariatric surgery.

Abstract
Cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Bolbosoma balaenae (Gmelin, 1790) were found encapsulated in the cephalothorax of the euphausiid Nyctiphanes couchii (Bell, 1853) from temperate waters in the NE Atlantic Ocean. Euphausiids were caught in locations outside the Ría de Vigo in Galicia, NW Spain, and prevalence of infection was up to 0.1%. The parasite was identified by morphological characters. Cystacanths were 8.09 ± 2.25 mm total length (mean ± SD) and had proboscises that consisted of 22 to 24 longitudinal rows of hooks, each of which had 8 or 9 hooks per row including 2 or 3 rootless ones in the proboscis base and 1 field of small hooks in the prebulbar part. Phylogenetic analyses of 18S rDNA and cytocrome c oxidase subunit I revealed a close relationship with other taxa of the family Polymorphidae (Meyer, 1931). The results extend northwards ot the known distribution of B. balaenae. Taxonomic affiliation of parasites and trophic ecology in the sampling area suggest that N. couchii is the intermediate host for B. balenae, and we suggest that the whales Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus, 1758) and B. acutorostrata (Lacepède, 1804) are its definitive hosts. This life cycle is probably completed with or without paratenic hosts.

Abstract
Aggregata bathytherma sp. nov. is described from the digestive tract of Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis, a deep-sea octopus recently discovered associated with hydrothermal vents in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Oocysts typically are spherical in shape, sometimes irregular, 163 to 356 microm in length, and 219 to 313 microm in width. Each oocyst contains from 50 to over 200 sporocysts. Sporocysts measure 27 to 32 microm in longest diameter. The cyst wall is smooth and 1 microm thick. Each sporocyst typically contains 14 to 17 sporozoites, 49 microm in length. Histological lesions associated with the presence of A. bathytherma include rupture of the basal membrane and detachment of the epithelial cells. In heavily infected areas, most of the tissue of the host digestive tract is replaced by parasites. A. bathytherma is the first Aggregata species described from a host that lives in association with hydrothermal vents, and the third species of Aggregata from eastern North Pacific waters.

Abstract
Sperm ultrastructure of the deep-sea hydrothermal vent octopod Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis has been carried out by transmission electron microscopy. Spermatozoa of this species have the shortest head observed so far in octopodids. The acrosome possesses a helix with six gyres. The rod-shaped nucleus is short and wide in relation with other octopodids. Noteworthy features along the nucleus are the regularly disposed dense bands of cytoplasm, which have not been observed before in octopodids. The nuclear fossa is very short and wavy. Mitochondrial sheath has 10 elongated mitochondria running parallel to the axoneme-coarse fibers complex. Sperm morphology of V. hydrothermalis resembles that of Enteroctopus dofleini, suggesting a close phylogenetic relationship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) profile in most drugs' available information is based on both the incidence of alanine aminotansferase (ALT) elevations in clinical trials and published case reports. AIM To assess the relationship between ALT elevations in clinical trials and the number of published case reports in the postmarketing setting. METHODS Hepatotoxic drugs were identified from product labelling and classified in high-medium risk (Black Box Warning or Precautions section) or low risk (a statement in the Adverse Reactions section). Incidence of ALT elevations (> or = 3 x ULN) for drug (I(D)) and placebo (I(C)) treated patients in premarketing clinical trials and DILI published case reports were retrieved from product labelling and MEDLINE. RESULTS The median I(C) was 10/1000. The high-medium-risk drugs' median I(D) was significantly higher compared with low-risk drugs (17/1000 vs. 10/1000; P = 0.046). Chi-squared test, absolute difference and odds ratio comparing I(D) and I(C) identified 35%, 51% and 77% of high-medium-risk drugs respectively. Less number of case reports were associated with low- than high-medium-risk drugs (1 vs. 7; P = 0.001). A high odds ratio in clinical trials (I(D) vs. I(C)) was the strongest predictor of published DILI case reports. CONCLUSION A relationship between increased ALT incidence in premarketing clinical trials and postmarketing published case reports exists.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE to evaluate the efficacy of various indicators in predicting short- and long-term survival in patients with cirrhosis and acute variceal bleeding. MATERIAL AND METHODS prognostic indicators were calculated for a cohort of 201 cirrhotic patients with acute variceal bleeding hospitalized in our center, a third-level teaching hospital. The studied variables were: age, sex, etiology of cirrhosis, endoscopic findings, previous variceal bleeding episodes, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), infection during episode, and Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) and Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores within 24 hours of bleeding onset. Patients were followed up for at least 6 months until death, liver transplantation, or end of observation. RESULTS median follow-up was 66.85 weeks (range 0-432.4). The 6-week, 3-month, 12-month and 36-month mortality rates were 22.9, 24.9, 34.3, and 39.8%, respectively. Age >= 65 years, presence of HCC, CTP score >=10, and MELD score >= 18 were the variables associated with mortality in the multivariate analysis. The accuracy of MELD scores as predictors of 6-week, 3-month, 12-month, and 36-month mortality was better than that of CTP scores (c-statistics: 6 week MELD 0.804, CTP 0.762; 3-month MELD 0.794, CTP 0.760; 12-month MELD 0.766, CTP 0.741; 36 month MELD 0.737, CTP 0.717). CONCLUSION MELD and CTP scores together with age and a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma are useful indicators to assess the short- and long-term prognosis of patients with acute variceal bleeding.

Abstract
Numerous pseudocysts of the myxosporean genus Kudoa were found infecting the body musculature of commercial frozen blocks of Patagonian hakes of the species Macruronus magellanicus, Merluccius australis, and Merluccius hubbsi. Pseudocysts consisted of numerous diminutive quadrate spores with four polar capsules. The small subunit ribosomal DNA was amplified, cloned, and sequenced for phylogenetic study. Minimum evolution and maximum parsimony analyses placed the resulting sequences in a clade with Kudoa species of Patagonian hakes, K. rosenbuschi and K. alliaria, with bootstrap values of 99%. Molecular and morphological results indicated that the above species were the same, with some differences based on host-related factors. Minor muscular damage appeared as a focal distortion of host fiber architecture to accommodate the parasite. The mild host response consisted of different stages of encapsulation. In cases of concurrent heavy infections, these fish are unappealing as food, due to the parasite's potential effect on the market's perception of macroscopic, unsightly cysts in fish musculature.

Abstract
Translocation of bacterial-DNA in patients with cirrhosis and ascites triggers an innate immune response. Identification of characteristics to which this response is sensitive is relevant from a clinical standpoint. The aim of this study has been to determine if the proinflammatory immune response established in vivo in cirrhotic patients with ascites as a consequence of bacterial-DNA translocation is related to the identified bacterial species and their frequency of cytosine-guanosine content in serum and ascitic fluid. Patients with advanced cirrhosis and ascites were included in the study and distributed into groups I and II according to the absence or presence of bacterial-DNA translocation, respectively. Serum and ascitic fluid levels of proinflammatory cytokines after normalization of bacterial-DNA concentration and the activated form of nuclear factor-kappa B in ascitic fluid pellets were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay techniques. Translocation of bacterial-DNA with higher cytosine-guanosine content induced the highest cytokine response, which was higher than that in patients without bacterial-DNA translocation. The activated form of nuclear factor-kappa B in ascitic fluid pellets of patients with bacterial-DNA translocation was greater in patients with higher bacterial-DNA cytosine-guanosine content, whereas the amount of total nuclear factor-kappa B remained unaltered. Bacterial-DNA translocation induces a marked immune reaction in vivo in patients with advanced cirrhosis and ascites which is related, among other factors, to the bacterial-DNA cytosine-guanosine content. Therefore, the host's immune response to bacterial-DNA translocation constitutes a species-specific phenomenon.

Abstract
Propranolol is a widely used drug for prophylaxis of variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis, but not all patients show an adequate clinical response. This variability may be in relation to beta adrenoceptor activity, but no information is available in this setting. Thirty-nine patients with advanced cirrhosis and presence of oesophageal varices were sequentially included. We studied the function of beta-2-adrenoceptor in isolated membranes of mature erythrocytes obtained from patients by measuring cyclic AMP (cAMP) production before and after isoproterenol. Blood samples obtained from 11 healthy volunteers were used as control. Patients showed a six-fold increase in the mean basal cAMP production as compared to healthy volunteers. Isoproterenol produced a small, non-significantly and highly variable increase in the AC activity in patients compared with controls. cAMP values remain stable after three months of continuous treatment with oral beta-blockers in both groups. Patients without antecedent of variceal bleeding or with an active alcohol intake showed a significantly higher isoproterenol effect. In conclusion, beta-receptor function in human erythrocytes membranes is altered in patients with cirrhosis and oesophageal varices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND the association of somatostatin (SMT) with endoscopic therapy in patients with cirrhosis and variceal bleeding significantly improves the control of the bleeding episode, and hemodynamic data have shown that a dosage of 500 mg/h allows a more marked reduction of portal pressure versus the usual dosage of 250 mg/h. AIM to assess if the 500 mg/h dosage is associated with an improved outcome. METHODS sixty-two patients with variceal bleeding were included in the study. Patients were randomized to receive the usual dosage of SMT (group I: 250 mg/h), or a double dosage (group II: 500 mg/h), together with emergency endoscopic sclerotherapy. RESULTS the control of the bleeding episode was similar in both groups of patients. Early rebleeding was less frequent in patients receiving double vs. single dosage of SMT (p = 0.06). When considering patients with advanced liver disease (Child-Pugh B or C) early rebleeding was significantly less frequent in patients receiving the 500 mg/h dose of SMT (39 vs. 13%, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS the perfusion of higher doses of SMT (500 mg/h) in association with emergency sclerotherapy in patients with cirrhosis and esophageal hemorrhage significantly decreases the rate of early rebleeding in patients with more advanced stages of liver disease.

Abstract
A new species of coccidian, Aggregata andresi, is described from the digestive tract of the flying squid Martialia hyadesi, an ommastrephid squid that lives in cold subantarctic waters in the Southwest Atlantic. Gamogonic and sporogonic stages were observed in the digestive tract of 96.5% studied hosts. Oocysts were ovoid to subspheroid in shape, 170-590 microm in length and 200-530 microm in width. Each oocyst contained approximately 45,000 sporocysts. Sporocysts measured 9.5-10 microm in length and 8-8.5 microm in width. The surface of the sporocyst wall was smooth and the cyst wall thick. Each sporocyst contained three sporozoites measuring 16-20 microm in length and 2-2.5 microm width. A. andresi is the second species of Aggregata to be reported from a nerito-oceanic cephalopod host.

The use of marine parasites as non-intrusive natural tags of their hosts was first broadly applied in fisheries science in the 1940s. Both micro- and macroparasites have been used to assess the status of current stocks of several commercially exploited species of marine animals. Here, Santiago Pascual and Eric Hochberg offer a brief comment on marine parasite tags as a stock assessment methodology, with special reference to cephalopod hosts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term administration of norfloxacin is recommended for secondary prophylaxis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in cirrhosis, but it may be associated with the development of quinolone-resistant bacteria in stools. However, these bacteria rarely cause infections. AIM To assess bacterial adherence of either quinolone-sensitive or -resistant Escherichia coli obtained from stools of cirrhotic patients, as one of the main virulence factors, and its variations when sub-minimum inhibitory concentration of norfloxacin were added to the medium. METHODS E. coli strains were co-cultured with oral epithelial cells obtained from patients in presence/absence of norfloxacin. Bacterial adherence was measured as percentage of cells exhibiting positive adherence and the number of bacteria attached to epithelial cells. RESULTS 37 sensitive and 22 resistant E. coli strains were studied. Bacterial adherence was similar in both series (78% vs. 81%, P = N.S.), and these percentages were similarly and significantly reduced when subminimum inhibitory concentration of norfloxacin was added to the culture medium (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Bacterial adherence of E. coli obtained from patients with cirrhosis is unrelated to the sensitivity/resistance to quinolones, and is similarly reduced in both cases when subminimum inhibitory concentration of norfloxacin is added to the medium.

Abstract
Biotypes B and Q of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), collected from the islands of Tenerife and Majorca respectively, were exposed to competition conditions on tomato cv. Marmande in the laboratory. Both biotypes were established in single and mixed cultures at different densities. Increased mortality of biotype Q females and immature instars was observed together with a lower rate of fecundity and progeny size compared to biotype B, when reared in single or mixed cultures. The female:male sex ratio of F1 individuals of biotype Q was higher in single than in mixed cultures. However, the sex ratio of F1 individuals of biotype B was the same in single and mixed cultures, suggesting reproductive interference. Whitefly density did not affect interspecific interactions. It had a moderate effect on developmental rate of both biotypes, and on mortality of immature instars and progeny size of biotype B only. The results indicate that under laboratory conditions the studied biotype B should displace biotype Q.

Abstract
AIM To study the pharmacokinetic and metabolism profiles of a single dose of acetaminophen in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS Oral acetaminophen (1000 mg) was administered to seven healthy subjects and 14 patients with cirrhosis (nine Child-Pugh A or B and five Child-Pugh C grade), being five without and nine with oesophageal varices. Plasma levels of acetaminophen and its metabolites were determined by HPLC. RESULTS Patients showed a higher mean area under the curve concentration-time (67.4 +/- 22.4 mg h/L vs. 38.8 +/- 4.3 mg h/L; P = 0.01), a lower clearance (166.7 +/- 85.0 mL/min vs. 367.8 +/- 62.5 mL/min; P = 0.01) and higher elimination half-life (3.8 +/- 1.1 h vs. 2.0 +/- 0.4 h; P = 0.01) of acetaminophen than healthy volunteers. The appearance in blood and the urinary excretion of metabolites in patients did not differ from healthy subjects. Absorption profile was faster in patients. Patients with lower mean and systolic arterial pressure had lower AUC of acetaminophen, independently of liver dysfunction stage. CONCLUSIONS Patients with cirrhosis had a higher AUC and lower clearance of acetaminophen. Acetaminophen attained earlier therapeutic concentrations in patients with oesophageal varices. Mean and systolic arterial pressures were significantly associated with AUC suggesting the importance of the haemodynamic function on the pharmacokinetics of acetaminophen in patients with cirrhosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Translocation of intestinal bacteria to ascitic fluid is probably the first step in the development of episodes of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in patients with cirrhosis. We have recently reported the detection of bacterial DNA in blood and ascitic fluid from patients with advanced cirrhosis, what we consider as molecular evidence of bacterial translocation. Several studies have shown the immunogenic role of bacterial DNA in vitro, and we hypothesised that the presence of bacterial DNA could activate the type I immune response in peritoneal macrophages from these patients, leading to greater cytokine synthesis (interleukin (IL)-2 and IL-12, tumour necrosis factor alpha, and interferon gamma) and effector molecules such as nitric oxide. METHODS Peritoneal macrophages obtained from patients with cirrhosis and culture negative non-neutrocytic ascitic fluid were collected and characterised by flow cytometry. Inducible nitric oxide synthase, nitric oxide levels, and cytokine production were measured by immunoenzymometric assays in basal and harvested conditions according to the presence/absence of bacterial DNA. RESULTS The ability of peritoneal macrophages to synthesise nitric oxide and levels of all cytokines were significantly increased in patients with bacterial DNA. There was a positive correlation between inducible nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide levels. CONCLUSIONS The presence of bacterial DNA in patients with decompensated cirrhosis is associated with marked activation of peritoneal macrophages, as evidenced by nitric oxide synthesising ability, together with enhanced cytokine production.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of C282Y homozygosity in patients with hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) has been reported to be markedly lower in the Mediterranean Basin than in northern Europe. In Spain, the available data are contradictory and limited to small series in specific regions. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of the 2 main HFE gene mutations in a large series of unrelated Spanish patients with HH from different geographical origins. PATIENTS AND METHOD The criteria for HH diagnosis were: repeat serum transferrin saturation index (> 45% plus C282Y homozygosity and/or hepatic iron index (> 1.9 of dry liver weight in non-cirrhotic patients or (> 4.1 in patients with liver cirrhosis. Cases in related individuals were excluded. Demographic data, clinical expression, iron parameters and HFE gene mutations (C282Y and H63D) were assessed in 222 patients. RESULTS A total of 83.3% of patients were C282Y homozygous and 5% were compound heterozygous (C282Y/H63D). No significant differences in phenotypic expression or in the frequency of C282Y homozygosity were observed between patients born in the North and South of Spain. CONCLUSION The genotypic and phenotypic expression of HH in Spain is very similar to that reported in Northern Europe. Thus, the genetic heterogeneity described in some Southern European regions cannot be considered a common feature to all countries of the Mediterranean Basin.

Abstract
The anisakid nematode populations collected from fish and stranded cetaceans along from Iberian Peninsula waters were morphologically identified as corresponding to the Anisakis simplex complex. In order to realise their molecular identification and to analyse the extent of genetic variation, the entire ITS (ITS1, 5.8S rDNA gene and ITS2) and the mitochondrial small subunit of rRNA were pcr-amplified and sequenced. Digestions of the amplified its region with HinfI and HhaI allowed the identification of three different genotypes, belonging to A. simplex s.s., A. pegreffii and a yet not described recombinant genotype. The ITS sequences of the recombinant genotypes showed the presence of heterozygotes C/T at position 240 and 256 of the aligned sequence. Otherwise, the analysis of mtDNA sequences showed the existence of a different parental origin for recombinant genotypes. In order to check if they can be the products of a polymorphism normally occurring both in A. pegreffii and in A. simplex s.s., and/or the existence of an incomplete concerted evolution, three samples were also collected as controls in isolated geographic areas, where sympatric coexistence between A. simplex s.s. and A. pegreffii does not occur. The results supports the hypothesis that the recombinant individuals may be a product of interspecific hybridisation, and describe the Iberian Peninsula waters as a hybrid zone for the two sibling species.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Upper gastrointestinal bleeding continues to be a severe and frequent complication in ulcerative disease. Etiologic diagnosis in these patients is highly important in order to initiate appropriate treatment and prevent bleeding recurrence. OBJECTIVE 1. To investigate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and use of NSAIDs in patients with upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage of peptic origin. 2. To analyze the strategy used for the diagnosis of H. pylori in our previous work. PATIENTS AND MEHTODS: Seventy-three patients with endoscopically-diagnosed upper gastrointestinal bleeding of peptic origin were included in the study. The use of NSAIDs was investigated. H. pylori infection was diagnosed if one of the following tests was positive: urease test, histology, breath test. RESULTS H. pylori infection was found in 92% of duodenal ulcers and in 88% of gastric ulcers. Fifty-six percent of the patients had taken NSAIDs. Excluding these patients resulted in an H. pylori infection rate of 96.7%. The diagnosis was based on urease test in 46%. In the remaining patients, breath test and histology were required. CONCLUSIONS The main etiology in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding of peptic origin is H. pylori infection followed by the use of NSAIDs, and these two factors frequently coexist. The strategy of performing a urease test and, when this is negative, performing histological study and a breath test, is valid and allows a diagnosis of H. pylori infection to be made even if patients are receiving treatment that could make diagnosis difficult.

Abstract
Octopus vulgaris infected with Aggregata octopiana were collected from an open-water culture system in the Ría of Aldán (NW Spain). Digestive tract infection values were determined with the use of a Neubauer chamber by counting the number of A. octopiana sporocysts. After determining enzyme activity values by the colorimetric Api-Zym system Biomerieux, one representative enzyme of glycosidases, peptid hydrolases and phosphoric hydrolases showing high activity was spectrophotometrically analysed. The enzymes were maltase and leucine-aminopeptidase (LAP) involved in the absorption process, and acid phosphatase, a lysosomic enzyme, respectively. Enzymatic activity of maltase and LAP decreased significantly, with increased sporocyst counts. However, acid phosphatase activity increased with severity of infection, indicating the presence of degradative enzymes from phagocytic cells in the infected area. A detrimental effect on gastrointestinal function may result from a decrease or malfunction of absorption enzymes. The results suggest a malabsorption syndrome resulting from parasitic infection.

Abstract
Gamogony and sporogony of Aggregata octopiana were commonly observed during histological examination of the digestive tract of wild Octopus vulgaris from Ria de Vigo (NW Spain). A. octopiana infected noncuticularized caecum and intestine, and cuticularized oesophagus and crop. Infection was also observed in the gills and in covering mesenterium, mainly of the digestive gland and gonad. Histological and ultrastructural lesions associated with A. octopiana included host cell hypertrophy with nuclear displacement, inflammation, phagocytosis, ulceration and destruction of organ architecture. The possible existence of a malabsorption syndrome in the host is deduced.

Abstract
The application of atomic force microscopy to the understanding of surface structure and atomic-scale measurements on the sporocyst of European Aggregata species, intracellular coccidia of the cephalopods Octopus vulgaris and Sepia officinalis, is presented here. Using the roughness mean surface (RMS) as an index, we reveal texture to be a key parameter for characterisation of the sporocyst surface properties, which resolve the historical synonymy within the European Aggregatidae. Roughness measurements from RMS algorithms may also be an important diagnostic taxonomic character for the differentiation of Aggregata species in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accuracy of the most frequently used tests for diagnosing Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding of peptic origin is determined. METHODS Seventy-eight patients with endoscopically-proven upper gastrointestinal bleeding of peptic origin were included. The presence of H. pylori was considered when observed from the histology or, if negative, when serology and breath test were both positive. Accuracy of the rapid urease test was estimated in accordance with results obtained with other diagnostic methods. RESULTS Lesions causing gastrointestinal bleeding were 56 duodenal ulcers, 13 gastric ulcers, 7 pyloric channel ulcers, 13 acute lesions of the gastric mucosa and 16 erosive duodenitis. H. pylori infection was present in 68 patients (87.2%). Forty-four patients had received non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The sensitivity/specificity (%) of the diagnostic methods was 48.5/100 for the rapid urease test, 91/77.8 for the breath test, 89.5/80 for serology and 86.3/100 for histology. The prior consumption of proton-pump inhibitors and antibiotics induced false-negative results in the rapid urease test and breath test, with no effect on serology and histology. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of H. pylori infection in patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding from peptic lesions is high. Sensitivity of the rapid urease test for diagnosing H. pylori is low in this setting. Cases with negative rapid urease test need the combination of two or more additional tests if diagnosis is to be achieved. Cases with positive rapid urease test do not need further investigation for diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Morbid obesity is an increasing problem worldwide. In many patients pharmacotherapy is ineffective and these cases are treated by surgery. Different types of gastroplasty and gastric bypasses have been described. However, all of these ablative surgical methods are irreversible and often replace obesity by other disorders. Neuromodulation of vagal activity is a method of inducing significant changes in stomach motility. We developed a pre-programmed microchip able to pace vagal afferent activity by changing current parameters. The aim of our study was to evaluate long-term effects of vagal neuromodulation on food intake and body mass in rabbits. METHODOLOGY Twenty-seven healthy male adult New Zealand white rabbits were included into the study and divided into three groups: A, B and C, 9 animals each. Microchips were implanted by laparotomy access. Anesthesia was obtained by continuous intravenous infusion of propofol. Microchips were fixed in the preperitoneal pocket and two electrodes were positioned on the posterior vagus in group A by forward, and in group B by backward pacing. Control group C was sham operated by laparotomy and only vagal nerves preparation was performed. The following parameters were estimated: daily solid food and liquids intake, amount of feces, body mass and heart rate. RESULTS Within four weeks after operation body mass in group B had decreased up to 12% (P = 0.029), whereas in group A and C changed to -3% and +2%, respectively. An 87% solid food intake was observed in group A, 60% in group B (P < 0.01), and 143% in group C, compared to preoperative period. No significant differences were observed between groups A, B and C for liquids intake. Total feces weight changes corresponded to solid food intake. Heart rate decreased intraoperatively to 78% and 74% in groups A and B, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Microchip mediated functional gastroplasty significantly reduces food intake and body mass. Obtained results encourage using similar treatment in morbid obesity human patients. However, further studies are required.

Abstract
A total of 100 specimens of the European shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis aristotelis were examined for anisakid infections in the south-east North Atlantic. The taxonomic status of the anisakid nematodes was studied by structural analysis using light and scanning electron microscopy. Two species, Contracaecum septentrionale and C. rudolphii A (Nematoda: Ascaridoidea), occurred in the European shag with high values of prevalence and mean intensities of infection. These constitute new host records for both parasites, widening their known geographical distribution. Although the histopathology associated with the infections indicated that the anisakids did not have the potential to cause bird death, the parasites are capable of contributing to and hastening avian mortality in the case of heavily-parasitized cormorants and when stressed by xenobiotics and/or through a synergetic effect by other bioagressors.

Abstract
Concentrations of the elements C, N, Fe, Na, K, Ca and Mg were analysed by chromatography and atomic absorption spectrometry in the whaleworm Anisakis simplex sensu lato. Nearly all mean inorganic element concentrations measured were higher in adult worms than in larval forms. Similarly, adults contained significantly higher nitrogen (i.e. lower C/N ratio values) than either eggs or larvae. Evidence for the significance of the parasitic life cycle stage and the systematic position of their hosts on the element concentration variability is discussed.

Abstract
In temperate waters of the NE Atlantic, third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex sensu stricto collected from 3 paratenic host species were identified by restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The condition of wild larval infrapopulations was assessed by examining morphometric and growth characteristics. The differentiation patterns and the excretory/secretory products of larvae grown in vitro were also examined. An extensive morphometric, growth and differentiation variability was found between parasite larvae collected from different paratenic host sources. Nematode infrapopulation larvae from the squid comprise those smaller individuals with the lowest values of survival rates and moult success. It may be then concluded that the fitness of A. simplex s. str. larvae is not the best possible in the squid, which impaired the competitiveness of the parasite and its chances of developing into an adult. This suggests that the microenvironments impaired by the paratenic host may provide larval infrapopulations with unique ecological factors probably influencing its recruitment to the final host populations.

Abstract
A total of 2,673 fresh specimens of cephalopod and fish representing 35 species were obtained from commercial local fisheries in Galician waters (NW Spain). They were examined for anisakid nematodes by digestion of the muscle and elution of the viscera and whole body cavity. All larval nematodes recovered were identified by light microscopy and multilocus electrophoresis as belonging to the species Anisakis simplex sensu stricto and A. pegreffii. Encysted larvae mostly occurred in the viscera but were also found in the flesh of squid and fish. Demographic values for larval nematodes are discussed in relation to host preferences and the ecological niche of both anisakid species at the sampling area. Primary recommendations are also expressed concerning the effects of current fishing and aquaculture practices on the Anisakis problem.
