Design and Development of Sustainable Cu2 (II)- and Mn2 (III)-Embedded Bifunctional Electrocatalysts: Enhanced Hydrogen and Oxygen Generation

Nowadays, environmentally friendly, low-cost-effective, and sustainable electrocatalysts used widely for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions have come into the limelight as a new research topic for scientists. This study highlights the preparation of two unique and symmetrical dinuclear Cu (II) and Mn (III) bifunctional catalysts by a facile simple slow evaporation and diffusion route. [C32H24Cu2F4N4O4] (1) and [C32H24Mn2F4N4O4] (2) both have monoclinic (C2/c (15)) crystal systems, with oxidation states +2 and +3, respectively. Prominent SPR peaks at 372 and 412 nm indicate an M-L charge transfer transition in both complexes. The synthesized electrocatalysts display exceptional catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Complex 1 exhibits enhanced hydrogen generation in 0.5 M H2SO4 with a small overpotential of 216 mV at -10 mA cm-2 along with a significantly lower Tafel value of 97 mV/dec compared to Complex 2. Moreover, Complex 1 is highly active for the OER in 1 M KOH with a small Tafel slope of 103 mV/dec and a low overpotential of 340 mV to acquire 10 mA cm-2 current density, compared to Complex 2. Complex 1 and Complex 2 remain stable up to 20 h in acidic electrolyte and up to 36 h and 20 h in the basic electrolyte, respectively.

Population and risk assessment of sympatric pheasant species in Palas Valley, Pakistan

Abstract Pheasants are declining everywhere in the world and therefore updated information about their population and habitats are important for conservation and management. The present study was conducted in the Palas Valley, District Kohistan, Pakistan in late spring (May and June) 2020 and early spring (March and April) 2021 to assess the population and anthropogenic stress. The major focus was on three sympatric pheasant species, including Western Horned Tragopan (Tragopan melanocephalus), Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus), and Koklass Pheasant (Pucrasia macrolopha). We used the “Call Count Method” for the population assessment in the field, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to document the risk assessment of local residents of the valley. The population assessments revealed that the Koklass Pheasant is more adapted to increasing anthropogenic activities and its population appeared more or less similar as 22 years ago. In the past 22 years, Western Tragopan and Himalayan Monal have lost about 40–50% of their populations. Human interference in the form of illegal hunting, deforestation, and overgrazing was found to be common in the valley. The study concludes that the Palas Valley habitat is ideal for pheasant species; however, human interference in the form of urbanization, habitat fragmentation, illegal hunting, and deforestation is occurring at a rapid pace, causing havoc in the pheasant population.

A study on the effectiveness of sodium selenite in treating cadmium and perfluoro octane sulfonic (PFOS) poisoned zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Perfluoro octane sulfonate (PFOS) and cadmium (Cd) are toxic elements in the environment. As a micronutrient trace element, selenium (Se) can mitigate the adverse effects induced by PFOS and Cd. However, few studies have examined the correlation between Se, PFOS and Cd in fish. The present study focused on the antagonistic effects of Se on PFOS+Cd-induced accumulation in the liver of zebrafish. The fish was exposed to PFOS (0.08mg/L), Cd (1mg/L), PFOS+ Cd (0.08 mg/L PFOS+1 mg/L Cd), L-Se (0.07mg/L Sodium selenite +0.08mg/L PFOS+1mg/L Cd), M-Se (0.35mg/L Sodium selenite + 0.08mg/L PFOS+ 1 mg/L Cd), H-Se (1.75 mg/L Sodium selenite + 0.08 mg/L PFOS+ 1mg/L Cd) for 14d. The addition of selenium to fish exposed to PFOS and Cd has been found to have significant positive effects. Specifically, selenium treatments can alleviate the adverse effects of PFOS and Cd on fish growth, with a 23.10% improvement observed with the addition of T6 compared to T4. In addition, selenium can alleviate the negative effects of PFOS and Cd on antioxidant enzymes in zebrafish liver, thus reducing the liver toxicity caused by PFOS and Cd. Overall, the supplementation of selenium can reduce the health risks to fish and mitigate the injuries caused by PFOS and Cd in zebrafish.

ZnO nanoparticles mediated by Azadirachta indica as nano fertilizer: Improvement in physiological and biochemical indices of Zea mays grown in Cr-contaminated soil

The current investigation aimed at evaluating the impact of Azadirachta indica-mediated zinc oxide nanoparticles (Ai-ZnONPs) on the growth and biochemical characteristics of maize (sweet glutinous 3000) under exposure to 50 mg kg-1Ai-ZnONPs with Cr (VI) concentrations of 50 and 100 mg kg-1. The results indicate that plants exposed to Cr (VI) only experienced a decline in growth parameters. Conversely, the inclusion of Ai-ZnONPs caused a noteworthy increase in physiological traits. Specifically, shoot and root fresh weight increased by 28.02% and 16.51%, and 63.11% and 97.91%, respectively, when compared to Cr-50 and 100 treatments. Additionally, the SPAD chlorophyll of the shoot increased by 91.08% and 15.38% compared to Cr-50 and 100 treatments, respectively. Moreover, the antioxidant enzyme traits of plant shoot and root, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD 7.44% and 2.70%, and 4.45% and 3.53%), catalase (CAT 1.18% and 3.20%, and 5.03% and 5.78%), and peroxidase (POD 0.31% and 5.55%, and 4.72% and 3.61%), exhibited significant increases in Cr 50 and 100 treatments, respectively. The addition of Ai-ZnONPs to the soil also enhanced soil nutrient status and reduced Cr (VI) concentrations by 40.69% and 19.82% compared to Cr-50 and 100 treated soils. These findings suggest that Ai-ZnONPs can trigger the activation of biochemical pathways that enable biomass accumulation in meristematic cells. Further investigations are required to elucidate the mechanisms involved in growth promotion.

Organoleptic characteristics and compositional profile of meat of growing Japanese quail fed different levels of poultry byproducts compost

The poultry industry generates a lot of waste, including dead birds, manure, and poultry litter. Poultry waste should never be disposed of improperly because it can seriously harm the environment. The waste can be recycled as a feedstock for use in poultry feed by composting the litter and deceased birds. The compositional profile and organoleptic properties of the meat of growing Japanese quail were examined over the course of a 4-week trial to ascertain the effect of adding compost to the diet. In a completely randomized design (CRD), 1200 newly hatched quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were divided into five treatment groups (diets with 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10% compost), each consisting of 40 birds with six replicates. The addition of compost to the diet had no noticeable effects on the organoleptic qualities of appearance, color, aroma, taste, texture, juiciness, tenderness, and acceptability (P>0.05). The compositional profile characteristics for chicks given compost at any level compared to chicks fed the control diet showed no differences (P>0.05). These findings suggest that the sensory characteristics and compositional profile of growing meat quails can be maintained when fed diets including up to 10% compost.

Assessing effect of feeding poultry byproducts compost on organoleptic characteristics and compositional profile of meat of broiler chickens

Large amounts of waste, including dead birds, manure, and poultry litter, are produced by the poultry industry. Poultry waste should be disposed of properly to avoid major pollution and health risks. Composting litter and dead birds could be an option to recycle the waste and use in poultry feed. A study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding composted poultry waste on the organoleptic qualities and compositional profile of the meat of broiler chickens. A total of 300 day-old broiler chicks (500-Cobb) were randomly allocated to five treatment groups replicated six times with 10 birds each, under a completely randomized design (CRD). Five iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous diets including composted poultry byproducts at concentrations of 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10% were fed ad libitum to the birds from day 0 to day 35. The sensory grading and meat composition profile of 500 Cobb broiler chickens were tested at 35 days of age. The findings showed that there were no variations in the sensory profiles of the meat from birds given various diets (P>0.05). Although the results were somewhat lower for the chicks fed compost-containing diets than for the control group, this difference was deemed to be insignificant (P>0.05). Similarly, there were no variations in the compositional profile values of the meat between meat from birds fed various diets (P>0.05). These findings imply that broiler chickens may be raised on diets containing up to 10% poultry byproduct compost without any negative impacts on the meat's sensory quality or composition. Additionally, using compost into broiler diets may help to lower the cost of feed.

Physiological and biochemical responses of soft coral Sarcophyton trocheliophorum to doxycycline hydrochloride exposure

In light of the rapid expansion of the marine aquaculture industry, there has been widespread and irregular usage of aquatic drugs to combat biological diseases, which significantly impact the neighboring aquatic ecosystems. This study delves into the impact of the antibiotic aquatic drug known as doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) on offshore soft corals, providing valuable data for the responsible use and management of aquatic drugs. In this investigation, we subjected Sarcophyton trocheliophorum to acute exposure to varying concentrations of DOX (0, 1, 5, and 10 mg L-1). We meticulously assessed critical parameters and observed alterations in protein levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, catalase (CAT) activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, Acid phosphatase (ACP) activity, alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity, glutathione (GSH) concentration, glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, zooxanthellae density, and chlorophyll content. Our findings reveal that in the presence of DOX-induced environmental stress, there is a significant increase in LPO, MDA, chlorophyll, carotenoid levels, and the activities of ACP, GST, and GSH-Px in soft corals. Simultaneously, there is a noteworthy decrease in zooxanthellae density. Additionally, the protein concentration and SOD activity in soft corals experience substantial reduction when exposed to 5 mg L-1 DOX. Notably, CAT activity varies significantly in environments with 1 and 10 mg L-1 DOX. Moreover, these conditions exhibit a discernible influence on AKP activity, GSH content, and chlorophyll levels. These findings suggest that DOX exposure carries the potential for toxicity in aquaculture settings, affecting protein synthesis in soft corals and influencing oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, immunity, and detoxification processes within these organisms. There is also a risk of compromising the coral defense system, potentially leading to coral bleaching. Furthermore, this study underscores the significant impact on photosynthesis, growth, and the metabolic dynamics of the coral-zooxanthellae symbiotic system. Consequently, our research offers vital insights into the mortality and bleaching effects of aquatic drugs on marine corals, offering a foundation for the prudent use and management of such substances.

Simultaneous immobilization of lead and arsenic and improved phosphorus availability in contaminated soil using biochar composite modified with hydroxyapatite and oxidation: Findings from a pot experiment

Multi-metals/metalloids contaminated soil has received extensive attention because of their adverse health effects on the safety of the food chain and environmental health. In order to provide additional insight and aid in mitigating environmental risks, a pot experiment was directed to assess the impacts of biochars derived from rice straw (BC), and modified biochars i-e., hydroxyapatite modified (HAP-BC) and oxidized biochars (Ox-BC) on the redistribution, phytoavailability and bioavailability of phosphorus (P), lead (Pb), and Arsenic (As), as well as their effects on the growth of maize (Zea mays L.) in a Lead (Pb)/Arsenic (As) contaminated soil. The results showed that HAP-BC increased the soil total and available P, compared with raw biochar and control treatment. HAP-BC improved soil properties by elevating soil pH and electric conductivity (EC). The Hedley fractionation scheme revealed that HAP-BC enhanced the labile and moderately labile P species in soil. Both HAP-BC and Ox-BC assisted in the P build-up in plant roots and shoots. The BCR (European Community Bureau of Reference) sequential extraction data for Pb and As in soil showed the pronounced effects of HAP-BC towards the transformation of labile Pb and As forms into more stable species. Compared with control, HAP-BC significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased the DTPA-extractable Pb and As by 55% and 28%, respectively, subsequently, resulting in reduced Pb and As plant uptakes. HAP-BC application increased the plant fresh and dry root/shoot biomass by 239%, 72%, 222% and 190%, respectively. The Pb/As immobilization by HAP-BC was mainly driven by precipitation, ion exchange and surface complexation mechanisms in soil. In general, HAP-BC application indicated a great capability to be employed as an effective alternative soil amendment for improving P acquisition in soil, simultaneously immobilizing Pb and As in the soil-plant systems.

Exploring biochar and fishpond sediments potential to change soil phosphorus fractions and availability

Phosphorus (P) availability in soil is paradoxical, with a significant portion of applied P accumulating in the soil, potentially affecting plant production. The impact of biochar (BR) and fishpond sediments (FPS) as fertilizers on P fixation remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the optimal ratio of BR, modified biochar (MBR), and FPS as fertilizer replacements. A pot experiment with maize evaluated the transformation of P into inorganic (Pi) and organic (Po) fractions and their contribution to P uptake. Different percentages of FPS, BR, and MBR were applied as treatments (T1-T7), T1 [(0.0)], T2 [FPS (25.0%)], T3 [FPS (25.0%) + BR (1%)], T [FPS (25%) +MBR (3%)], T5 [FPS (35%)], T6 [FPS (35%) +BR (1%)], and T7 [FPS (35%) + MBR (1%)]. Using the modified Hedley method and the Tiessen and Moir fractionation scheme, P fractions were determined. Results showed that various rates of MBR, BR, and FPS significantly increased labile and moderately labile P fractions (NaHCO3-Pi, NaHCO3-Po, HClD-Pi, and HClC-Pi) and residual P fractions compared with the control (T1). Positive correlations were observed between P uptake, phosphatase enzyme activity, and NaHCO3-Pi. Maximum P uptake and phosphatase activity were observed in T6 and T7 treatments. The addition of BR, MBR, and FPS increased Po fractions. Unlike the decline in NaOH-Po fraction, NaHCO3-Po and HClc-Po fractions increased. All Pi fractions, particularly apatite (HClD-Pi), increased across the T1-T7 treatments. HClD-Pi was the largest contributor to total P (40.7%) and can convert into accessible P over time. The T5 treatment showed a 0.88% rise in residual P. HClD-Pi and residual P fractions positively correlated with P uptake, phosphatase activity, NaOH-Pi, and NaOH-Po moderately available fractions. Regression analysis revealed that higher concentrations of metals such as Ca, Zn, and Cr significantly decreased labile organic and inorganic P fractions (NaHCO3-Pi, R 2 = 0.13, 0.36, 0.09) and their availability (NaHCO3-Po, R 2 = 0.01, 0.03, 0.25). Excessive solo BR amendments did not consistently increase P availability, but optimal simple and MBR increased residual P contents in moderately labile and labile forms (including NaOH-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi, and HClD-Pi). Overall, our findings suggest that the co-addition of BR and FPS can enhance soil P availability via increasing the activity of phosphatase enzyme, thereby enhancing plant P uptake and use efficiency, which eventually maintains the provision of ecosystem functions and services.

A systematic review on the bioremediation of metal contaminated soils using biochar and slag: current status and future outlook

Heavy metals contaminated soils are posing severe threats to food safety worldwide. Heavy metals absorbed by plant roots from contaminated soils lead to severe plant development issues and a reduction in crop yield and growth. The global population is growing, and the demand for food is increasing. Therefore, it is critical to identify soil remediation strategies that are efficient, economical, and environment friendly. The use of biochar and slag as passivators represents a promising approach among various physicochemical and biological strategies due to their efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and low environmental impact. These passivators employ diverse mechanisms to reduce the bioavailability of metals in contaminated soils, thereby improving crop growth and productivity. Although studies have shown the effectiveness of different passivators, further research is needed globally as this field is still in its early stages. This review sheds light on the innovative utilization of biochar and slag as sustainable strategies for heavy metal remediation, emphasizing their novelty and potential for practical applications. Based on the findings, research gaps have been identified and future research directions proposed to enable the full potential of passivators to be utilized effectively and efficiently under controlled and field conditions.

Evaluating the Combined Effects of Erythromycin and Levofloxacin on the Growth of Navicula sp. and Understanding the Underlying Mechanisms

Navicula sp., a type of benthic diatom, plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle as a widely distributed algae in water bodies, making it an essential primary producer in the context of global carbon neutrality. However, using erythromycin (ERY) and levofloxacin (LEV) in medicine, livestock, and aquaculture has introduced a new class of pollutants known as antibiotic pollutants, which pose potential threats to human and animal health. This study aimed to investigate the toxic effects of ERY and LEV, individually or in combination, on the growth, antioxidant system, chlorophyll synthesis, and various cell osmotic pressure indexes (such as soluble protein, proline, and betaine) of Navicula sp. The results indicated that ERY (1 mg/L), LEV (320 mg/L), and their combined effects could inhibit the growth of Navicula sp. Interestingly, the combination of these two drugs exhibited a time-dependent effect on the chlorophyll synthesis of Navicula sp., with ERY inhibiting the process while LEV promoted it. Furthermore, after 96 h of exposure to the drugs, the activities of GSH-Px, POD, CAT, and the contents of MDA, proline, and betaine increased. Conversely, the actions of GST and the contents of GSH and soluble protein decreased in the ERY group. In the LEV group, the activities of POD and CAT and the contents of GSH, MDA, proline, and betaine increased, while the contents of soluble protein decreased. Conversely, the mixed group exhibited increased POD activity and contents of GSH, MDA, proline, betaine, and soluble protein. These findings suggest that antibiotics found in pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) can harm primary marine benthic eukaryotes. The findings from the research on the possible hazards linked to antibiotic medications in aquatic ecosystems offer valuable knowledge for ensuring the safe application of these drugs in environmental contexts.

Aquaculture sediments amended with biochar improved soil health and plant growth in a degraded soil

Sustainable and safe management of aquaculture sediments is of great concern. Biochar (BC) and fishpond sediments (FPS) are rich in organic carbon and nutrients and thus can be used as soil amendments; however, it is not fully explored how the biochar amended fishpond sediments can affect soil properties/fertility and modulate plant physiological and biochemical changes, particularly under contamination stress. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation was carried out to explore the effects of FPS and BC-treated FPS (BFPS) on soil and on spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) grown in chromium (Cr) contaminated soils. Addition of FPS and BFPS to soil caused an increase in nutrients content and reduced Cr levels in soil, which consequently resulted in a significant increase in plant biomass, chlorophyll pigments, and photosynthesis, over the control treatment. The most beneficial effect was observed with the BFPS applied at 35 %, which further increased the antioxidant enzymes (by 2.75-fold, at minimum), soluble sugars by 24.9 %, and upregulated the gene expression activities. However, the same treatment significantly decreased proline content by 74.9 %, Malondialdehyde by 65.6 %, H₂O₂ by 65.1 %, and Cr concentration in spinach root and shoot tissues. Moreover, the average daily intake analysis showed that BFPS (at 35 %) could effectively reduce human health risks associated with Cr consumption of leafy vegetables. In conclusion, these findings are necessary to provide guidelines for the reutilization of aquaculture sediments as an organic fertilizer and a soil amendment for polluted soils. However, more future field studies are necessary to provide guidelines and codes on aquaculture sediments reutilization as organic fertilizer and soil amendment for polluted soils, aiming for a more sustainable food system in China and globally, with extended benefits to the ecosystem and human.

Adsorption of Pb(II) from wastewater using a red mud modified rice-straw biochar: Influencing factors and reusability

Efficient environmental remediation of toxic chemicals using effective sorbents has received considerable attention recently. For the present study, the synthesis of a red mud/biochar (RM/BC) composite was performed from rice straw with the aim of achieving Pb(II) removal from wastewater. Characterization was performed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Zeta potential analysis, elemental mapping, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results showed that RM/BC had higher specific surface area (S_BET = 75.37 m² g^-1) than raw biochar (S_BET = 35.38 m² g^-1). The Pb(II) removal capacity (q_e) of RM/BC was 426.84 mg g^-1 at pH 5.0, and the adsorption data well fitted pseudo second order kinetics (R² = 0.93 and R² = 0.98), as well as the Langmuir isotherm model (R² = 0.97 and R² = 0.98) for both BC and RM/BC. Pb(II) removal was slightly hindered with the increasing strength of co-existing cations (Na⁺, Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺, Ni²⁺, Cd²⁺). The increase in temperatures (298 K, 308 K, 318 K) favored Pb(II) removal by RM/BC. Thermodynamic study indicated that Pb(II) adsorption onto BC and RM/BC was spontaneous and primarily governed by chemisorption and surface complexation. A regeneration study revealed the high reusability (>90%) and acceptable stability of RM/BC even after five successive cycles. These findings indicate that RM/BC evidenced special combined characteristics of red mud and biochar, hence its use for Pb removal from wastewater offers a green and environmentally sustainable approach fitting the "waste treating waste" concept.

Targeted therapy using nanocomposite delivery systems in cancer treatment: highlighting miR34a regulation for clinical applications

The clinical application of microRNAs in modern therapeutics holds great promise to uncover molecular limitations and conquer the unbeatable castle of cancer metastasis. miRNAs play a decisive role that regulating gene expression at the post-transcription level while controlling both the stability and translation capacity of mRNAs. Specifically, miR34a is a master regulator of the tumor suppressor gene, cancer progression, stemness, and drug resistance at the cell level in p53-dependent and independent signaling. With changing, trends in nanotechnology, in particular with the revolution in the field of nanomedicine, nano drug delivery systems have emerged as a prominent strategy in clinical practices coupled with miR34a delivery. Recently, it has been observed that forced miR34a expression in human cancer cell lines and model organisms limits cell proliferation and metastasis by targeting several signaling cascades, with various studies endorsing that miR34a deregulation in cancer cells modulates apoptosis and thus requires targeted nano-delivery systems for cancer treatment. In this sense, the present review aims to provide an overview of the clinical applications of miR34a regulation in targeted therapy of cancer.

Application of BCXZM Composite for Arsenic Removal: EPS Production, Biotransformation and Immobilization of Bacillus XZM on Corn Cobs Biochar

This study determined the effect of Bacillus XZM extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production on the arsenic adsorption capacity of the Biochar-Bacillus XZM (BCXZM) composite. The Bacillus XZM was immobilized on corn cobs multifunction biochar to generate the BCXZM composite. The arsenic adsorption capacity of BCXZM composite was optimized at different pHs and As(V) concentrations using a central composite design (CCD)2² and maximum adsorption capacity (42.3 mg/g) was attained at pH 6.9 and 48.9 mg/L As(V) dose. The BCXZM composite showed a higher arsenic adsorption than biochar alone, which was further confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, EXD graph and elemental overlay as well. The bacterial EPS production was sensitive to the pH, which caused a major shift in the -NH, -OH, -CH, -C=O, -C-N, -SH, -COO and aromatic/-NO₂ peaks of FTIR spectra. Regarding the techno economic analysis, it was revealed that USD 6.24 are required to prepare the BCXZM composite to treat 1000 gallons of drinking water (with 50 µg/L of arsenic). Our findings provide insights (such as adsorbent dose, optimum operating temperature and reaction time, and pollution load) for the potential application of the BCXZM composite as bedding material in fixed-bed bioreactors for the bioremediation of arsenic-contaminated water in future.

Reply to the comments on "Facilely synthesized cobalt doped hydroxyapatite as hydroxyl promoted peroxymonosulfate activator for degradation of Rhodamine B" by Zuo et al

In a Co-HAP/PMS system, catalytic degradation process of RhB was accompanied by the gradual leaching of cobalt ion. The results of additional experiments showed that leached cobalt ion indeed contributed to active PMS for RhB degradation, which was not addressed in the previous study. The finding of the contribution from leached cobalt ion to PMS activation was reported due to the valuable comments of Zuo et al., what will be concerned in the future work. Importantly, Co-HAP still showed a significant contribution to PMS activation for RhB degradation at the initial stage. Fortunately, the release of Co²⁺ from Co-HAP was slow, the secondary pollution could not be addressed due to the slightly release of Co²⁺ ion that the Co²⁺ concentration is lower than the standard of the discharge wastewater. Furthermore, the mechanism of non-radical reaction in the Co-HAP/PMS system was reported to confirm the heterogeneous catalysis of a Co-HAP/PMS system.

Phenolic composition of grape pomace and its metabolism

Grape pomace is the most important residual after wine making, and it is considered to be a very abundant source for the extraction of a wide range of polyphenols. These polyphenols exhibit a variety of bioactivities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer. They are also beneficial in alleviating metabolic syndrome and regulating intestinal flora, etc. These health effects are most likely contributed by polyphenol metabolite, which are formed by the grape pomace phenolics after a complex metabolic process in vivo. Therefore, understanding the phenolic composition of grape pomace and its metabolism is the basis for an in-depth study of the biological activity of grape pomace polyphenols. In this paper, we first summarize the composition of phenolics in grape pomace, then review the recent studies on the metabolism of grape pomace phenolics, including changes in phenolics in the gastrointestinal tract, their pharmacokinetics in the systemic circulation, the tissue distribution of phenolic metabolites, and the beneficial effects of metabolites on intestinal health, and finally summarize the effects of human health status and dietary fiber on the metabolism of grape polyphenols. It is expected to provide help for the in-depth research on the metabolism and biological activity of grape pomace polyphenol extracts, and to provide theoretical support for the development and utilization of grape pomace.

Nano-hydroxyapatite modified biochar: Insights into the dynamic adsorption and performance of lead (II) removal from aqueous solution

Adsorption of lead as Pb(II) using biochar is an environmentally sustainable approach to remediate this kind of pollution affecting wastewater. In this study, rice straw biochar (BC) was modified by combination with nano-hydroxy-apatite (HAP), resulting in a material designated as BC@nHAP, with enhanced adsorption performance. Based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses, it was evidenced that, after modification, HAP greatly enhanced surface functional groups (i.e., -COOH and/or -OH) of raw biochar's surface. Batch tests showed that the maximum sorption capacity of BC (63.03 mg g^-1) was improved due to the modification, reaching 335.88 mg g^-1 in BC@nHAP. Pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetics fitted well the adsorption data (R² = 0.99), as well as the Langmuir isotherm model (showing an adsorption value of 335.88 mg g^-1 for q_e). The results of thermodynamic calculations showed that the adsorption was primarily governed by chemisorption process. FTIR spectroscopy and XPS spectrum after adsorption further confirmed that the adsorption mechanisms were ion exchange with Pb²⁺ and surface complexation by -OH and -COOH. In addition, BC@nHAP revealed a brilliant regeneration capability. The maximum adsorption capacity by BC@nHAP was higher than that of raw biochar or other previously reported adsorbents. Therefore, BC@nHAP could be seen as a new sorbent material with high potential for real-scale heavy metal removal from wastewater, and specifically as a capable candidate new sorbent for Pb(II) removal from wastewater, which has clear implications as regard preservation of environmental quality and public health.

Factors affecting youth empowerment and entrepreneurial initiatives: Social implications and way forward

This study aims to identify the factors that impact the empowerment of Pakistani youth and their entrepreneurial initiatives in Pakistan. A sample of 350 youngsters from renowned Pakistani universities across the country was selected for this purpose. The questionnaire was administered in person and electronically. Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) was used for analyzing the data. The findings indicated that all the hypothesized factors (government policies, lack of political participation, employment opportunities, and social engagement) had an impact on youth empowerment and their ability to initiate entrepreneurial activities. This study identified the set of factors that impact empowerment in youngsters, and this model can be extended to other contexts and additional factors can be included. The analytical findings from this study serve to help the government formulate appropriate policies for underserved youth and include them in the policy-making process so that the factors that hinder their empowerment and entrepreneurial initiatives could be addressed.

A green method for removing chromium (VI) from aqueous systems using novel silicon nanoparticles: Adsorption and interaction mechanisms

In the present study, we used the horsetail plant (Equisetum arvense) as a green source to synthesize silicon nanoparticles (GS-SiNPs), considering that it could be an effective adsorbent for removing chromium (Cr (VI)) from aqueous solutions. The characterization of GS-SiNPs was performed via Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The batch test results of Cr (VI) adsorption on GS-SiNPs showed a high adsorption capacity, reaching 87.9% of the amount added. The pseudo-second order kinetic model was able to comprehensively explain the adsorption kinetics and provided a maximum Cr (VI) adsorption capacity (Q_e) of 3.28 mg g^-1 (R² = 90.68), indicating fast initial adsorption by the diffusion process. The Langmuir isotherm model fitted the experimental data, and accurately simulated the adsorption of Cr (VI) on GS-SiNPs (R² = 97.79). FTIR and XPS spectroscopy gave further confirmation that the main mechanism was ion exchange with Cr and surface complexation through -OH and -COOH. Overall, the results of the research can be of relevance as regards a green and new alternative for the removal of Cr (VI) pollution from affected environments.

Physiological and Transcriptomic Analysis provide Molecular Insight into 24-Epibrassinolide mediated Cr(VI)-Toxicity Tolerance in Pepper Plants

The ever-increasing industrial activities over the decades have generated high toxic metals such as chromium (Cr) that hampers plant growth and development. To counter Cr-toxicity, plants have evolved complex defensive systems including hormonal crosstalk with various signaling pathways. 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBR) lowers oxidative stress and alleviates Cr(VI)-toxicity in plants. In this study, the concealed BR-mediated influences on Cr(VI)-stress tolerance were explored by transcriptome analysis in the Capsicum annuum. Results revealed a linkage between plant development under Cr(VI)-stress and the mitigating effect of 24-epibrassinolide and brassinazole. Growth inhibition, chlorophyll degradation, and a significant rise of malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed after 40 mg/L Cr(VI) treatment in Brz supplemented seedlings, whereas 24-EBR supplemented seedlings exhibited commendatory effect. Comparative transcriptome analysis showed that the expression levels of 6687 genes changed (3846 up-regulated and 2841 downregulated) under Cr(VI)-stress with Brz supplementation. Whereas the expression levels of only 1872 genes changed under Cr(VI)-stress with 24-EBR supplementation (1223 up-regulated and 649 downregulated). The functional categories of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by gene ontology (GO) revealed that drug transport, defense responses, and drug catabolic process were the considerable enrichments between 24-EBR and Brz supplemented seedlings under Cr(VI)-stress. Furthermore, auxin signaling, glutathione metabolism, ABC transporters, MAPK pathway, and 36 heavy metal-related genes were significantly differentially expressed components between Cr(VI)-stress, 24-EBR, and Brz supplemented seedlings. Overall, our data demonstrate that employing 24-EBR can commendably act as a growth stimulant in plants subjected to Cr(VI)-stress by modulating the physiological and defense regulatory system.

Herbal plants- and rice straw-derived biochars reduced metal mobilization in fishpond sediments and improved their potential as fertilizers

Fishpond sediments are rich in organic carbon and nutrients; thus, they can be used as potential fertilizers and soil conditioners. However, sediments can be contaminated with toxic elements (TEs), which have to be immobilized to allow sediment reutilization. Addition of biochars (BCs) to contaminated sediments may enhance their nutrient content and stabilize TEs, which valorize its reutilization. Consequently, this study evaluated the performance of BCs derived from Taraxacum mongolicum Hand-Mazz (TMBC), Tribulus terrestris (TTBC), and rice straw (RSBC) for Cu, Cr, and Zn stabilization and for the enhancement of nutrient content in the fishpond sediments from San Jiang (SJ) and Tan Niu (TN), China. All BCs, particularly TMBC, reduced significantly the average concentrations of Cr, Cu, and Zn in the overlying water (up to 51% for Cr, 71% for Cu, and 68% for Zn) and in the sediments pore water (up to 77% for Cr, 76% for Cu, and 50% for Zn), and also reduced metal leachability (up to 47% for Cr, 60% for Cu, and 62% for Zn), as compared to the control. The acid soluble fraction accounted for the highest portion of the total content of Cr (43-44%), Cu (38-43%), and Zn (42-45%), followed by the reducible, oxidizable, and the residual fraction; this indicates the high potential risk. As compared with the control, TMBC was more effective in reducing the average concentrations of the acid soluble Cr (15-22%), Cu (35-53%), and Zn (21-39%). Added BCs altered the metals acid soluble fraction by shifting it to the oxidizable and residual fractions. Moreover, TMBC improved the macronutrient status in both sediments. This work provides a pathway for TEs remediation of sediments and gives novel insights into the utilization of BC-treated fishpond sediments as fertilizers for crop production.

Frequency of Premenstrual Syndrome and Its Association with Quality of Life among University Students

About 70% of the females are affected from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and 45% are those who are severely affected that the symptoms affecting their daily life routine. Objectives: To find the frequency of premenstrual syndrome among university students and the association of premenstrual syndrome with quality of life. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methodology: Data of 500 university students (UHS, AIMC, SIMS and FAST NU) was gathered through two questionnaires, one for diagnosis of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and other was SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire to check association of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) with quality of life. Statistical analysis: Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Percentages and graphs were given for the qualitative variables while Mean± SD were given for quantitative variables. Results: 339 students were diagnosed with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and then quality of life was assessed using SF-36 to find the association with premenstrual syndrome. 67.8% of the females in a given sample having premenstrual syndrome. Conclusion: It was concluded that prevalence of premenstrual syndrome was high. Quality of life was majorly disturbed in several domains which emphasized that the premenstrual syndrome was directly associated with disturbed quality of life. Synthesis of isatin and its derivatives having antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic activities

OBJECTIVE

The current objective was to synthesize biologically active Isatin derivatives. For this purpose, six (06) chemical entities of Isatin derivatives such as 3a-3c and 4a-4c were synthesized from Isatin substrate.

METHODS

The pure compounds were characterized with the help of 1H-NMR, FT-IR, EIMS spectroscopic techniques. The synthesized amines 3a-3c and hydrazones 4a-4c were evaluated for their toxicity potential with the help of brine shrimp bioassay.

RESULTS

The obtained results revealed that 3c exhibited promising toxicity (LD50 = 1.03 × 10-5M) against Artemia salina. The pure chemical entities such as, 3a-3c and 4a-4c were evaluated against four Gram-negative (E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. typhi, S. flexneri) and two Gram-positive (B. subtilis, S. aureus) bacteriae. The compound 3a displayed significant activity against two bacterial strains; i.e. P. aeruginosa, S. typhi, compound 3c demonstrated significant activity against P. aeruginosa. Compound 4b was the most active against S. typhi, displaying greater diameter of the growth of inhibition zone (GIZ) than the standard drug. Compound 4c exhibited significant activity against P. aeruginosa, S. typhi. The compounds 3a-3c and 4a-4c exhibited moderate to significant antibacterial activity against three out of five strains. Only Compound 3c revealed promising toxicity (LD50 = 1.03 × 10-5 M) against Artemia salina. Antifungal studies of the compounds 3a-3c and 4a-4c against six fungal cultures; T. longifusus, C. albicans, A. flavus, M. canis, F. solani, and C. glabrata. All the compounds were active against one or more pathogens having inhibition (10-90%). 3a exhibited significant inhibition i.e. 90% against M. canis, 70% against T. longifusus, Compound 4b further displayed significant inhibition (90%) against A. flavus and thus proved to be the most active member of the series.

CONCLUSION

All compounds showed better antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic activities, may provide a ground to prepare enhanced molecules with much higher antibacterial activities.

Distribution, pollution, and human health risks of persistent and potentially toxic elements in the sediments around Hainan Island, China

Human activities have changed the global concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and significantly altered the marine ecosystem. Little is known about the concentrations of these PTEs around Hainan Island in China, or their distribution and human health risks. Understanding the variability of PTEs in marine sediments and how they accumulate is important not only for biodiversity and ecological conservation, but also for management of aquatic natural resources and human health risk assessments. This study showed that the concentrations of six PTEs (Cd, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, and Hg), sampled in nine different cities, were linked to human activities. In order to understand the ecological risks associated with PTE pollution, we calculated the contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF), pollution load index (PLI), and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) of each element in each city. These indicators suggest that the pollution of Cd and Zn in the sediments of these cities is higher than that of the other PTEs. We also carried out a human health risk assessment which demonstrated the carcinogenic effects of Zn on children and adults in ChengMai, while Pb showed non-carcinogenic effects at all the studied sites, suggesting that Zn pollution in the sediments of ChengMai may pose human health risks. We would therefore advise that follow-up studies endeavor to monitor the levels of PTEs in the flora and fauna of these cities.

Biochar composite with microbes enhanced arsenic biosorption and phytoextraction by Typha latifolia in hybrid vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland

Arsenic contamination of ground water is a worldwide issue, causing a number of ailments in humans. As an engineered and integrated solution, a hybrid vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland (VSSF-CW) amended with BCXZM composite (Bacillus XZM immobilized on rice husk biochar), was found effective for the bioremediation of arsenic contaminated water. Biological filter was prepared by amending top 3 cm of VSSF-CW bed with BCXZM. This filter scavenged ∼64% of total arsenic and removal efficiency of ∼95% was achieved by amended and planted (As + P + B) VSSF-CW, while non-amended (As + P) VSSF-CW showed a removal efficiency of ∼55%. The unplanted and amended (As + B) VSSF-CW showed a removal efficiency of ∼70%. The symbiotic association of Bacillus XZM, confirmed by SEM micrographs, significantly (p ≤ 0.05) reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation in Typha latifolia, hence, increasing the plant growth (2 folds). An increase in the indole acetic acid (IAA) and arsenic accumulation in plant was also observed in As + P + B system. The removal efficiency of the system was compromised after 4th consecutive cycle and 48 h was observed as optimum retention time. The FTIR-spectra showed the involvement of -N-H bond, carboxylic acids, -CH₂ stretching of -CH₂ and -CH_3, carbonyl groups, -C-H, C-O-P and C-O-C, sulphur/thiol and phosphate functional groups in the bio-sorption of arsenic by BCXZM filter. Our study is a first reported on the simultaneous phytoextraction and biosorption of arsenic in a hybrid VSSF-CW. It is proposed that BCXZM can be applied effectively in CWs for the bioremediation of arsenic contaminated water on large scale.

Comparative efficacy of raw and HNO3-modified biochar derived from rice straw on vanadium transformation and its uptake by rice (Oryza sativa L.): Insights from photosynthesis, antioxidative response, and gene-expression profile

Low concentrations of vanadium (V) are essential for various plant species but it becomes toxic to plants, animals, and humans at high levels. A significant amount of V is currently being emitted into the atmosphere due to intensified industrial processing. Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating the effect of raw (BC) and HNO₃-modified biochar (OBC) derived from rice straw on growth, photosynthetic assimilation, relative chlorophyll content, SPAD index, ion leakage, enzyme activities, hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), bioavailability and V uptake by rice in a laboratory-scale experiment. Characterization of OBC and BC by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), SEM (scan electron microscopy), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller), elemental analysis, and z-potential revealed a substantial difference between both of them. The V-stress significantly reduced the rice plant growth, biomass yield, chlorophyll parameters, root length and surface area. Under V-stress conditions, root accumulated more V than shoots and OBC significantly improved the above-mentioned parameters, while, decreasing hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in plants. The antioxidant function and gene expression levels induced by V-stress and OBC application further increased the expression profile of three genes (SOD, POD, and CAT) encoding antioxidant enzymes and one metal-tolerant conferring gene (OsFSD1). In summary, these results demonstrated the critical role of OBC in mitigating the detrimental effects of high V-stress on rice growth and enhancing plant defence against V-stress.

Highly efficient uranium (VI) capture from aqueous solution by means of a hydroxyapatite-biochar nanocomposite: Adsorption behavior and mechanism

The exploration and rational design of easily separable and highly efficient sorbents with the sufficient capability of retaining radioactive and toxic uranium U(VI) is paramount. In this study, a hydroxyapatite (HAP) biochar nanocomposite (BR/HAP) was successfully fabricated from rice straw biochar (BR), to be used as a new and efficient adsorbent for removing U(VI) from aqueous solution. Both BR and the BR/HAP composite were characterized via Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Batch test results showed that BR/HAP exhibited remarkably higher adsorption capacity than the raw BR. A pseudo-second order kinetic model thoroughly explained the adsorption kinetics, providing the maximum U(VI) adsorption capacities (q_e) of 110.56 mg g^-1 (R² = 0.98) and 428.25 mg g^-1 (R² = 0.99), for BR and BR/HAP, respectively, which was indicative of the rate-limited sorption via diffusion or surface complexation after rapid initial adsorption steps. The Langmuir isotherm model fitted the experimental data to accurately simulate the adsorption of U(VI) onto BR and BR/HAP (R² = 0.97 and R² = 0.99). The thermodynamic results showed negative values for ΔG°, clearly indicating that the reaction was spontaneous, as well as positive values for ΔH° (11.04 kJ mol^-1 and 28.86 kJ mol^-1, respectively) and ΔS° (88.97 kJ mol^-1 K^-1, and 183.42 kJ mol^-1 K^-1), making clear the endothermic nature of U(VI) adsorption onto both sorbents, with an increase in randomness at a molecular level. FTIR spectroscopy and XPS spectrum further confirmed that the primary mechanisms were ion exchange with UO₂²⁺ and surface complexion by -OH and -COOH. In addition, BR/HAP showed an excellent reusability, making it a promising candidate as a new sorbent for U(VI) removal from wastewater. In view of that, it would be interesting to perform future research to explore practical implications of this sorbent material regarding protection from environmental and public health issues related to that pollutant.

Quantitative Ethnobotanical Analysis of Medicinal Plants of High-Temperature Areas of Southern Punjab, Pakistan

Lack of proper infrastructure and the poor economic conditions of rural communities make them dependent on herbal medicines. Thus, there is a need to obtain and conserve the historic and traditional knowledge about the medicinal importance of different plants found in different areas of the world. In this regard, a field study was conducted to document the medicinal importance of local plants commonly used by the inhabitants of very old historic villages in Southern Punjab, Pakistan. In total, 58 plant species were explored, which belonged to 28 taxonomic families, as informed by 200 experienced respondents in the study area. The vernacular name, voucher number, plant parts used, and medicinal values were also documented for each species. Among the documented species, Poaceae remained the most predominant family, followed by Solanaceae and Asteraceae. The local communities were dependent on medicinal plants for daily curing of several ailments, including asthma, common cold, sore throat, fever, cardiovascular diseases, and digestive disorders. Among the reported species, leaves and the whole plant remained the most commonly utilized plant parts, while extracts (38.8%) and pastes (23.9%) were the most popular modes of utilization. Based on the ICF value, the highest value was accounted for wound healing (0.87), followed by skincare, nails, hair, and teeth disorders (0.85). The highest RFC value was represented by Acacia nilotica and Triticum aestivum (0.95 each), followed by Azadirachta indica (0.91). The highest UV was represented by Conyza canadensis and Cuscuta reflexa (0.58 each), followed by Xanthium strumarium (0.37). As far as FL was concerned, the highest value was recorded in the case of Azadirachta indica (93.4%) for blood purification and Acacia nilotica (91.1%) for sexual disorders. In conclusion, the local inhabitants primarily focus on medicinal plants for the treatment of different diseases in the very old historic villages of Southern Punjab, Pakistan. Moreover, there were various plants in the study area that have great ethnobotanical potential to treat various diseases, as revealed through different indices.

Enhanced adsorption of aqueous Pb(II) by modified biochar produced through pyrolysis of watermelon seeds

A biochar (BC) was obtained by the pyrolysis of watermelon seeds (WM) in nitrogen environment. In addition, a modified biochar (HP-BC) was obtained by means of H₂O₂ treatment of BC. Later on, both kinds of biochar (BC and HP-BC) were characterized and compared as regards their potential for Pb(II) adsorption from wastewater. Characterization was performed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Zeta potential analysis, elemental mapping, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Pb(II) adsorption characteristics for HP-BC and BC as were evaluated as a function of solution pH, contact time and Pb(II) equilibrium concentration, using kinetic and thermodynamic studies, as well as adsorption isotherms. Regarding kinetics, the pseudo-second order model showed good fitting to experimental data. Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacities were calculated as 44.32 mg g^-1 and 60.87 mg g^-1 for BC and HP-BC, respectively. Thermodynamic study indicated that Pb(II) adsorption onto BC and HP-BC was spontaneous and primarily governed by chemisorption and surface complexation. In view of the results, the H₂O₂ modification of the watermelon seeds biochar can be considered as a promising and cost effective approach as regards Pb(II) removal from water/wastewater, which would not cause adverse impacts on the surrounding environments. Overall, it can be seen as a procedure promoting the effective recycling of a waste/by-product, in line of the precepts of the circular economy, aiding to protect human and environmental health.

Adsorption of arsenic (III) from aqueous solution by a novel phosphorus-modified biochar obtained from Taraxacum mongolicum Hand-Mazz: Adsorption behavior and mechanistic analysis

A novel phosphorus (P) modified biochar (PLBC) was produced by pyrolyzing biomass of the dietic herb Taraxacum mongolicum Hand-Mazz (TMHM) and treating it with monopotassium phosphate (KH₂PO₄). This phosphorous loaded biochar was then assessed as adsorbent for As(III) removal from contaminated water. In the current research, the adsorbent was characterized before and after P loading by means of SEM-EDX, TEM, FTIR and XRD techniques. It was evidenced that the presence of P on the surface of the biochar (BC) could improve its efficiency to remove As(III) from contaminated environments. Adsorption kinetics were evaluated by performing batch-type experiments at varied times and pH values (5, 7 and 9). The kinetic study revealed that a contact time of 24 h was required to attain equilibrium and the experimental data were best fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (q_e = 17.1 mg g^-1). In addition, several batch experiments were conducted with varied arsenic concentrations. During the adsorption tests, the maximum adsorption of As(III) was found at pH 5. The adsorption study further showed that compared to BC, PLBC depicted increased removal of As(III) from contaminated solutions. The adsorption experimental data showed the best fit to the Langmuir isotherm model (with R² = 0.84), with maximum As(III) adsorption capacity reaching 30.76 mg g^-1 for PLBC.

Fabrication, characterization and U(VI) sorption properties of a novel biochar derived from Tribulus terrestris via two different approaches

Water contamination due to radionuclides is considered a crucial environmental issue. In this study, Tribulus terrestris plant biomass was used as a precursor for obtaining biochar (BC), that was further modified by two different methods using FeCl₃ to obtain two different magnetic biochars. Both (one-step biochar, called 1S-BC, and two-steps biochar, called 2S-BC) were studied to investigate their capability for adsorbing/removing uranium (VI) from aqueous solutions. The U(VI) removal efficacy of both biochars was tested for different values of pH, ionic strength, initial concentration of U(VI) and temperature. Experimental adsorption data fitted well to the Freundlich model (achieving as highest value for adsorption capacity K_F = 49.56 mg g^-1 (mg L^-1)^-1/n, R² = 0.99). Thermodynamic studies revealed that adsorption was endothermic, characterized by inner-sphere complexation, and entropy-driven with a relatively increased randomness in the solid-solution interface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that U(VI) sorption took place by surface complexation between U(VI) and oxygen containing functional groups on both biochars. Five consecutive regeneration cycles verified an excellent reusability for 1S-BC. The overall results allow to conclude that the FeCl₃ modification of the biochar obtained from Tribulus terrestris plant biomass could give an efficient alternative adsorbent for U(VI) removal in a variety of environmental conditions, promoting protection of the environment and human health, as well as facilitating resource utilization and sustainable management of the materials studied.

Utilization of Citrullus lanatus L. seeds to synthesize a novel MnFe2O4-biochar adsorbent for the removal of U(VI) from wastewater: Insights and comparison between modified and raw biochar

Uranium (U) is a radioactive and highly toxic metal. Its excessive concentrations in the aqueous environments may result in severe and irreversible damage. To fight this hazard, a raw biochar was prepared from Citrullus lanatus L. seeds, then characterized and compared with a MnFe₂O₄ modified biochar, both tested for U(VI) adsorption from wastewater, which was assayed for the first time in this study. The characterization of the adsorbent materials was performed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) with elemental mapping, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The effects of solution pH, concentration of sorbate and sorbents, temperature, time and ionic strength were assessed as regards their influence on U(VI) adsorption. The experimental adsorption data showed good fit to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model (reaching a value of q_e = 15.12 mg g^-1, R² = 0.96 at equilibrium), and to the Langmuir isotherm (achieving a maximum score of q_max = 27.61 mg g^-1, R² = 0.96). The maximum adsorption capacity was found at 318 K. The results of the study indicate that the binding of negatively charged functional groups (carbonyls, hydroxyls, and some carboxylic groups) with MnFe₂O₄ significantly enhanced U(VI) adsorption. In view of the overall results, it can be concluded that the MnFe₂O₄ modification of the Citrullus lanatus L. seeds biochar could give an efficient alternative adsorbent for U(VI) removal in a variety of environmental conditions, simultaneously promoting resource utilization and good sustainable management of the materials studied, aiding to protect the environment and human health.

Insights into conventional and recent technologies for arsenic bioremediation: A systematic review

Arsenic (As) bioremediation has been an economical and sustainable approach, being practiced widely under several As-contaminated environments. Bioremediation of As involves the use of bacteria, fungi, yeast, plants, and genetically modified organisms for detoxification/removal of As from the contaminated site. The understanding of multi-factorial biological components involved in these approaches is complex and more and more efforts are on their way to make As bioremediation economical and efficient. In this regard, we systematically reviewed the recent literature (n=200) from the last two decades regarding As bioremediation potential of conventional and recent technologies including genetically modified plants for phytoremediation and integrated approaches. Also, the responsible mechanisms behind different approaches have been identified. From the literature, it was found that As bioremediation through biosorption, bioaccumulation, phytoextraction, and volatilization involving As-resistant microbes has proved a very successful technology. However, there are various pathways of As tolerance of which the mechanisms have not been fully understood. Recently, phytosuction separation technology has been introduced and needs further exploration. Also, integrated approaches like phytobial, constructed wetlands using As-resistant bacteria with plant growth-promoting activities have not been extensively studied. It is speculated that the integrated bioremediation approaches with practical applicability and reliability would prove most promising for As remediation. Further technological advancements would help explore the identified research gaps in different approaches and lead us toward sustainability and perfection in As bioremediation.

Abdominal wall reconstruction using biosynthetic absorbable mesh in high-risk complex ventral hernia

BACKGROUND

Biosynthetic mesh may represent an improvement on biological and large pore synthetic meshes for high-risk complex ventral hernia repair. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of polyglycolic acid (PGA):trimethylene carbonate (TMC) biosynthetic mesh for reinforcement of the midline fascial closure in a single-stage repair of complex ventral hernias in high-risk patients.

METHODS

A retrospective review was undertaken for patients who underwent a planned open single-stage complex ventral hernia repair with a single unit of PGA:TMC biosynthetic mesh between May 2013 and August 2017. Data on outcome variables were recorded and quality of life assessed using the Short Form-12 (SF-12) instrument.

RESULTS

Overall, 56 patients underwent abdominal wall reconstruction for complex ventral hernias. All meshes were placed in the retrorectus position. Some 39% underwent component separation. The majority of patients (86%, n = 48) had high risk (grade 2 or 3) hernias according to the Ventral Hernia Working Group classification. Overall hernia recurrence rate was 3.6% (n = 2). Postoperative surgical site infection occurred in 26.8% (n = 15). Median follow-up by clinical examination was 6 months (range 4–17). Median telephone follow-up was 21 months (range 4–54). Pre- and post-treatment SF-12 quality of life assessments demonstrated significant improvements in both the physical and mental components.

CONCLUSION

This study reports a large series of abdominal wall reconstructions using biosynthetic mesh in complex ventral hernia. The findings indicate promising early outcome data associated with use of biosynthetic mesh. Larger well-controlled studies with longer follow-up are needed for confirmation of these findings.

Morphological characteristics of native chicken of village Chhajjian, Haripur Pakistan

The present study was conducted to describe the variations in morphological characteristics of different selected populations of indigenous chickens. Five populations of chickens in different (localities) of Chhajjian, KP, Pakistan, were studied based on qualitative traits recorded for a total of 100 chickens. Each of the study populations contains multiple variants of plumage colors and other physical features. The average flock size was observed to be 38. Predominant plumage color was grayish and other mixtures along with different percentages in different localities. Pea comb was the dominant comb type in all localities. Most of the chickens were yellow skinned. Males in all populations were heavier and taller than the females. This recorded variation in morphological traits will help in the conservation of these chickens.

Assessment of health and ecological risks of heavy metal contamination: a case study of agricultural soils in Thall, Dir-Kohistan

Heavy metal (HM) contamination in agricultural soils has been a significant health concern worldwide due to their persistent and non-biodegradable nature and biomagnification to higher trophic levels. The present study was conducted to assess Cd and Pb concentrations in soil samples collected from potato-growing areas in Thall, Dir-Kohistan, and to determine their associated health and ecological risks. The contamination factor calculated for Cd (0 to 1.74) and Pb (0 to 0.91) showed their moderate to low contamination in the study area. Geo-accumulation indices of Cd and Pb were less than 1, indicating moderate soil pollution of these HM in the study area. However, the ecological risk factor (Eri) of Cd was greater than 40 for only three soil samples, indicating the moderate potential of ecological risks of respective soils. The principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation suggested that the contamination in different soils was lithogenic followed by anthropogenic activities. The hazard quotient (HQ) in children and adults was found in the following order: dermal > ingestion > inhalation. Moreover, the values of HQ through various exposure routes were higher in children compared to adults, which showed that adults were at a lower level of risk associated with HM contamination. The results of the present study can serve as baseline data for government agencies related to environmental protection, which could devise policies to minimize Cd and Pb contamination in the agricultural soils.

Synthesis of 99mTc-labeled 2-Mercaptobenzimidazole as a novel radiotracer to diagnose tumor hypoxia

Discovery of ^99mTc-labeled imidazole derivatives as a potential radiotracer for hypoxic tumor imaging is considered to be of great interest because of non-invasive detection capabilities. 2-Mercaptobenzimidazole (2-MBI) was successfully synthesized, characterized and radiolabeled with [^99mTc (CO)₃(H₂O)₃]⁺ intermediate to form ^99mTc-2-MBI complex with radiochemical purity of ≥95% yield as observed by instant-thin layer chromatography (ITLC) and radio-high performance liquid chromatography (radio-HPLC). The ^99mTc-2-MBI complex was observed to be stable in saline and serum with no noticeable decomposition at room temperature and 37 °C, respectively, over a time period of 24 h. Biodistribution results in Balb/c mice bearing S180 tumor show that ^99mTc-2-MBI highly internalized in tumor tissue, also possess preferably high tumor/muscle and tumor/blood ratios 4.14 ± 0.77 and 3.91 ± 0.63, respectively at 24 h incubation. Scintigraphic imaging study shows ^99mTc-2-MBI is visibly accumulated in hypoxic tumor tissue, suggesting it would be a promising radiotracer for early stage diagnosis of tumor hypoxia.

Antioxidant and antiglycation activities of traditional plants and identification of bioactive compounds from extracts of Hordeum vulgare by LC-MS and GC-MS

Glycation has been involved in Schiff base reaction lead to hyperglycemia at cellular level. The current study aimed to identify the bioactive compounds from selected folkloric plants for their antiglycation and antioxidant potential. Methanol extracts demonstrated the highest activities, therefore, it was further fractionated using n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and methanol solvents to isolate the nonpolar compounds from the Hordeum vulgare. Moreover, n-hexane and dichloromethane fractions of H. vulgare demonstrated the best antioxidant (61.58% and 62.89%) and antiglycation activities (72.52% and 61.52%) at 2 mg/ml, respectively. Analytical techniques of LC-MS and GC-MS were employed for identification of bioactive compounds; Biochanin A in dichloromethane (DCM) and Vitamin E in n-hexane fractions. There was a strong correlation between antioxidant and antiglycation activities (r = 0.97 and r = 0.96) of DCM & n-hexane fractions of H. vulgare. Findings of this study established the role of Biochanin A and Vit E from H. vulgare as potent antiglycation agents. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The results of this study confirmed the potential role of Black Barley has involved in the inhibition of protein glycation, which can be the potential treatment to reduce the complications of Diabetic Patients. The Black Barley has a rich source of identified compounds Biochanin A and Vitamin E. We can use this plant as a staple food in curing the severity of diabetes. The other practical approach is to use this plant as an ingredient of different food products. The extraction of identified bioactive compounds from the plant will be a good and cheap source of the treatment.

Influence of Aquatic pH on chemical speciation, phytochelation and vacuolar compartmentalization of arsenic in Vallisneria denseserrulata (Makino)

Arsenic (As) pollution of fresh water has become a major concern worldwide. The present study reports the As accumulation potential and detoxification mechanism in a native plant, Vallisneria denseserrulata (Makino), under different aquatic acidity conditions (pH). V. denseserrulata showed maximum growth at pH ∼7.0 and accumulated ∼1700 mg/kg of As. The increase in pH from 3.5 to 7 significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased As accumulation, thiol and total protein contents while malondialdehyde (MDA) content, soluble sugar content and percentage electrolytic leakage (%EL) of V. denseserrulata were decreased. The reduction of arsenate [As(V)] to arsenite As(III) was observed as a key step (81% reduction) of the As detoxification in V. denseserrulata. Majority of accumulated As was found in vacuoles (56-72%), while >80% of As in vacuoles was in the form of As(III). FT-IR spectra indicated the complexsation of As with carboxyl, amide, thiol, and hydroxyl groups. Our findings showed the presence of As detoxification mechanism in V. denseserrulata. Vacuolar As compartmentalization and formation of As-Phytochelatins/thiol complexes can be a part of As detoxification mechanisms in V. denseserrulata.

Role of sepiolite for cadmium (Cd) polluted soil restoration and spinach growth in wastewater irrigated agricultural soil

Metals that contaminate soil are one of the major problems seriously affecting sustainable agriculture worldwide. Cadmium (Cd) toxicity to agricultural crops is a global problem. Mobility of Cd in contaminated soil can be minimized by the amendment of soil passivators which will ultimately reduce its movement from soil to plants. A pot study was performed to evaluate the impact of sepiolite from 1% to 5% on Cd solubility and its accumulation in spinach tissues. Soil pH, Cd fractionation, Cd accumulation in spinach tissue and Cd adsorption mechanism were determined. Results were recorded that soil pH was increased from 0.3 to 1.0 units with the increasing rate of sepiolite from 1% to 5%. Similarly, Cd contents in acid soluble phase was decreased by 42.8% and increased in residual phase by 35.8% at 5% rate, relative to control. Moreover, the significant reduction in Cd uptake by spinach shoots and roots was occurred by 26.2% and 30.6% at 5% rate, respectively. Furthermore, the maximum Cd adsorption capacity 37.35 mg g^-1 was recorded at 5% rate relative to control. The analysis of FTIR, XRD and SEM also confirm the ability of sepiolite for Cd polluted soil restoration and thereby, reduces its phytoavailability in polluted soil to alleviate food security challenges.

Study of Inheritance and Linkage of Virulence Genes in a Selfing Population of a Pakistani Dominant Race of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici

Wheat stripe rust is a severe threat of almost all wheat-growing regions in the world. Being an obligate biotrophic fungus, Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (PST) produces new virulent races that break the resistance of wheat varieties. In this study, 115 progeny isolates were generated through sexual reproduction on susceptible Himalayan Berberis pseudumbellata using a dominant Pakistani race (574232) of PST. The parental isolate and progeny isolates were characterized using 24 wheat Yr single-gene lines and ten simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. From the one-hundred-and-fifteen progeny isolates, 25 virulence phenotypes (VPs) and 60 multilocus genotypes were identified. The parental and all progeny isolates were avirulent to Yr5, Yr10, Yr15, Yr24, Yr32, Yr43, YrSp, YrTr1, YrExp2, Yr26, and YrTye and virulent to Yr1, Yr2, Yr6, Yr7, Yr8, Yr9, Yr17, Yr25, Yr27, Yr28, YrA, Yr44, and Yr3. Based on the avirulence/virulence phenotypes, we found that VPs virulent to Yr1, Yr2, Yr9, Yr17, Yr47, and YrA were controlled by one dominant gene; those to YrSp, YrTr1, and Yr10 by two dominant genes; and those to YrExp2 by two complementary dominant genes. The results are useful in breeding stripe rust-resistant wheat varieties and understanding virulence diversity.

Facilely synthesized cobalt doped hydroxyapatite as hydroxyl promoted peroxymonosulfate activator for degradation of Rhodamine B

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is a promising supporter of catalyst due to its potential in immobilizing metals stably. HAP supported cobalt-based catalyst (Co-HAP) was synthesized via a facile ion exchange-calcination method to reduce the Co leaching. The synthesized Co-HAP was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cobalt ions were incorporated into HAP structure and Co₃O₄ on HAP surface. Co-HAP showed satisfactory performance in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for eliminating Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution. Co-HAP even revealed a better activity than that of CoFe₂O₄. •OH, SO₄^•- and ¹O₂ were all involved in RhB degradation and ¹O₂ played a leading role. High content of surface oxygen groups could be found on Co-HAP after RhB degradation, which might be resulted from the high amounts of hydroxyl groups. The presence of hydroxyl groups performed the co-catalytic activity of PMS activation in Co-HAP/PMS system.

Indigenous strain Bacillus XZM assisted phytoremediation and detoxification of arsenic in Vallisneria denseserrulata

The symbiosis between Vallisneria denseserrulata and indigenous Bacillus sp. XZM was investigated for arsenic removal for the first time. It was found that the native bacterium was able to reduce arsenic toxicity to the plant by producing higher amount of extra cellular polymeric substances (EPS), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and siderosphore. Interestingly, V. denseserrulata-Bacillus sp. XZM partnership showed significantly higher arsenic uptake and removal efficiency. The shift in FT-IR spectra indicated the involvement of amide, carboxyl, hydroxyl and thiol groups in detoxification of arsenic, and the existence of an arsenic metabolizing process in V. denseserrulata leaves. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images further confirmed that the bacterium colonized on plant roots and facilitated arsenic uptake by plant under inoculation condition. In plant, most of the arsenic existed as As(III) (85%) and was massively (>77%) found in vacuole of particularly leaves cells. Thus, these findings are highly suggested for arsenic remediation in the constructed wetlands.
