Abstract
On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. This Letter reports on the target, laser, design, and experimental advancements that led to this result.

Abstract
Evolution of nitrogen under shock compression up to 100 GPa is revisited via molecular dynamics simulations using a machine-learned interatomic potential. The model is shown to be capable of recovering the structure, dynamics, speciation, and kinetics in hot compressed liquid nitrogen predicted by first-principles molecular dynamics, as well as the measured principal shock Hugoniot and double shock experimental data, albeit without shock cooling. Our results indicate that a purely molecular dissociation description of nitrogen chemistry under shock compression provides an incomplete picture and that short oligomers form in non-negligible quantities. This suggests that classical models representing the shock dissociation of nitrogen as a transition to an atomic fluid need to be revised to include reversible polymerization effects.

Abstract
Accurately modeling dense plasmas over wide-ranging conditions of pressure and temperature is a grand challenge critically important to our understanding of stellar and planetary physics as well as inertial confinement fusion. In this work, we employ Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) molecular dynamics (MD) to compute the properties of carbon at warm and hot dense matter conditions in the vicinity of the principal Hugoniot. In particular, we calculate the equation of state (EOS), Hugoniot, pair distribution functions, and diffusion coefficients for carbon at densities spanning 8 g/cm^{3} to 16 g/cm^{3} and temperatures ranging from 100 kK to 10 MK using the Spectral Quadrature method. We find that the computed EOS and Hugoniot are in good agreement with path integral Monte Carlo results and the sesame database. Additionally, we calculate the ion-ion structure factor and viscosity for selected points. All results presented are at the level of full Kohn-Sham DFT-MD, free of empirical parameters, average-atom, and orbital-free approximations employed previously at such conditions.

Abstract
For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion.

Abstract
Most experimentally known high-pressure ice phases have a body-centred cubic (bcc) oxygen lattice. Our large-scale molecular-dynamics simulations with a machine-learning potential indicate that, amongst these bcc ice phases, ices VII, VII′ and X are the same thermodynamic phase under different conditions, whereas superionic ice VII″ has a first-order phase boundary with ice VII′. Moreover, at about 300 GPa, the transformation between ice X and the Pbcm phase has a sharp structural change but no apparent activation barrier, whilst at higher pressures the barrier gradually increases. Our study thus clarifies the phase behaviour of the high-pressure ices and reveals peculiar solid–solid transition mechanisms not known in other systems. Many experimentally known high-pressure ice phase are structurally very similar. Here authors elucidate the phase behaviour of the high-pressure insulating ices and reveal solid-solid transition mechanisms not known in other systems.

Abstract
Triple bonding in the nitrogen molecule (N_{2}) is among the strongest chemical bonds with a dissociation enthalpy of 9.8 eV/molecule. Nitrogen is therefore an excellent test bed for theoretical and numerical methods aimed at understanding how bonding evolves under the influence of the extreme pressures and temperatures of the warm dense matter regime. Here, we report laser-driven shock experiments on fluid molecular nitrogen up to 800 GPa and 4.0 g/cm^{3}. Line-imaging velocimetry measurements and impedance matching method with a quartz reference yield shock equation of state data of initially precompressed nitrogen. Comparison with numerical simulations using path integral Monte Carlo and density functional theory molecular dynamics reveals clear signatures of chemical dissociation and the onset of L-shell ionization. Combining data along multiple shock Hugoniot curves starting from densities between 0.76 and 1.29 g/cm^{3}, our study documents how pressure and density affect these changes in chemical bonding and provides benchmarks for future theoretical developments in this regime, with applications for planetary interior modeling, high energy density science, and inertial confinement fusion research.

Abstract
The discovery of more than 4500 extrasolar planets has created a need for modeling their interior structure and dynamics. Given the prominence of iron in planetary interiors, we require accurate and precise physical properties at extreme pressure and temperature. A first-order property of iron is its melting point, which is still debated for the conditions of Earth’s interior. We used high-energy lasers at the National Ignition Facility and in situ x-ray diffraction to determine the melting point of iron up to 1000 gigapascals, three times the pressure of Earth’s inner core. We used this melting curve to determine the length of dynamo action during core solidification to the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure. We find that terrestrial exoplanets with four to six times Earth’s mass have the longest dynamos, which provide important shielding against cosmic radiation.

Abstract
Background Head-and-neck cancers (hncs) often present at an advanced stage, leading to poor outcomes. Late presentation might be attributable to patient delays (reluctance to seek treatment, for instance) or provider delays (misdiagnosis, prolonged wait time for consultation, for example). The objective of the present study was to examine the length and cause of such delays in a Canadian universal health care setting. Methods Patients presenting for the first time to the hnc multidisciplinary team (mdt) with a biopsy-proven hnc were recruited to this study. Patients completed a survey querying initial symptom presentation, their previous medical appointments, and length of time between appointments. Clinical and demographic data were collected for all patients. Results The average time for patients to have their first appointment at the mdt clinic was 15.1 months, consisting of 3.9 months for patients to see a health care provider (hcp) for the first time since symptom onset and 10.7 months from first hcp appointment to the mdt clinic. Patients saw an average of 3 hcps before the mdt clinic visit (range: 1-7). No significant differences in time to presentation were found based on stage at presentation or anatomic site. Conclusions At our tertiary care cancer centre, a patient's clinical pathway to being seen at the mdt clinic shows significant delays, particularly in the time from the first hcp visit to mdt referral. Possible methods to mitigate delay include education about hnc for patients and providers alike, and a more streamlined referral system.

Abstract
AIM It is not known whether patients with obstructive left colon cancer (OLCC) with caecal ischaemia or diastatic perforation (defined as a blowout of the caecal wall related to colonic overdistension) should undergo a (sub)total colectomy (STC) or an ileo-caecal resection with double-barrelled ileo-colostomy. We aimed to compare the results of these two strategies. METHOD From 2000 to 2015, 1220 patients with OLCC underwent surgery by clinicians who were members of the French Surgical Association. Of these cases, 201 (16%) were found to have caecal ischaemia or diastatic perforation intra-operatively: 174 patients (87%) underwent a STC (extended colectomy group) and 27 (13%) an ileo-caecal resection with double-end stoma (colon-sparing group). Outcomes were compared retrospectively. RESULTS In the extended colectomy group, 95 patients (55%) had primary anastomosis and 79 (45%) had a STC with an end ileostomy. In the colon-sparing group, 10 patients (37%) had simultaneous resection of their primary tumour with segmental colectomy and an anastomosis which was protected by a double-barrelled ileo-colostomy. The demographic data for the two groups were comparable. Median operative time was longer in the STC group (P = 0.0044). There was a decrease in postoperative mortality (7% vs 12%, P = 0.75) and overall morbidity (56% vs 67%, P = 0.37) including surgical (30% vs 40%, P = 0.29) and severe complications (17% vs 27%, P = 0.29) in the colon-sparing group, although these differences did not reach statistical significance. Cumulative morbidity included all surgical stages and the rate of permanent stoma was 66% and 37%, respectively, with no significant difference between the two groups. Overall survival and disease-free survival were similar between the two groups. CONCLUSION The colon-sparing strategy may represent a valid and safe alternative to STC in OLCC patients with caecal ischaemia or diastatic perforation.

Abstract
We present an accurate and efficient real-space formulation of the Hellmann-Feynman stress tensor for O(N) Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT). While applicable at any temperature, the formulation is most efficient at high temperature where the Fermi-Dirac distribution becomes smoother and the density matrix becomes correspondingly more localized. We first rewrite the orbital-dependent stress tensor for real-space DFT in terms of the density matrix, thereby making it amenable to O(N) methods. We then describe its evaluation within the O(N) infinite-cell Clenshaw-Curtis Spectral Quadrature (SQ) method, a technique that is applicable to metallic and insulating systems, is highly parallelizable, becomes increasingly efficient with increasing temperature, and provides results corresponding to the infinite crystal without the need of Brillouin zone integration. We demonstrate systematic convergence of the resulting formulation with respect to SQ parameters to exact diagonalization results and show convergence with respect to mesh size to the established plane wave results. We employ the new formulation to compute the viscosity of hydrogen at 106 K from Kohn-Sham quantum molecular dynamics, where we find agreement with previous more approximate orbital-free density functional methods.

Abstract
Atom-in-jellium calculations of the Einstein frequency were used to calculate the mean displacement of an ion over a wide range of compression and temperature. Expressed as a fraction of the Wigner-Seitz radius, the displacement is a measure of the asymptotic freedom of the ion at high temperature, and thus of the change in heat capacity from six to three quadratic degrees of freedom per atom. A functional form for free energy was proposed based on the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution as a correction to the Debye free energy, with a single free parameter representing the effective density of potential modes to be saturated. This parameter was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations, and found to be ∼0.2 per atom. In this way, the ion-thermal contribution can be calculated for a wide-range equation of state (EOS) without requiring a large number of molecular dynamics simulations. Example calculations were performed for carbon, including the sensitivity of key EOS loci to ionic freedom.

Abstract
AIM The aim was to define risk factors for postoperative mortality in patients undergoing emergency surgery for obstructing colon cancer (OCC) and to propose a dedicated score. METHOD From 2000 to 2015, 2325 patients were treated for OCC in French surgical centres by members of the French National Surgical Association. A multivariate analysis was performed for variables with P value ≤ 0.20 in the univariate analysis for 30-day mortality. Predictive performance was assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS A total of 1983 patients were included. Thirty-day postoperative mortality was 7%. Multivariate analysis found five significant independent risk factors: age ≥ 75 (P = 0.013), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score ≥ III (P = 0.027), pulmonary comorbidity (P = 0.0002), right-sided cancer (P = 0.047) and haemodynamic failure (P < 0.0001). The odds ratio for risk of postoperative death was 3.42 with one factor, 5.80 with two factors, 15.73 with three factors, 29.23 with four factors and 77.25 with five factors. The discriminating capacity in predicting 30-day postoperative mortality was 0.80. CONCLUSION Thirty-day postoperative mortality after emergency surgery for OCC is correlated with age, ASA score, pulmonary comorbidity, site of tumour and haemodynamic failure, with a specific score ranging from 0 to 5.

Abstract
We present laser-driven shock compression experiments on cryogenic liquid deuterium to 550 GPa along the principal Hugoniot and reflected-shock data up to 1 TPa. High-precision interferometric Doppler velocimetry and impedance-matching analysis were used to determine the compression accurately enough to reveal a significant difference as compared to state-of-the-art ab initio calculations and thus, no single equation of state model fully matches the principal Hugoniot of deuterium over the observed pressure range. In the molecular-to-atomic transition pressure range, models based on density functional theory calculations predict the maximum compression accurately. However, beyond 250 GPa along the principal Hugoniot, first-principles models exhibit a stiffer response than the experimental data. Similarly, above 500 GPa the reflected shock data show 5%-7% higher compression than predicted by all current models.

Abstract
Recent path-integral Monte Carlo and quantum molecular dynamics simulations have shown that computationally efficient average-atom models can predict thermodynamic states in warm dense matter to within a few percent. One such atom-in-jellium model has typically been used to predict the electron-thermal behavior only, although it was previously developed to predict the entire equation of state (EOS). We report completely atom-in-jellium EOS calculations for Be, Al, Si, Fe, and Mo, as elements representative of a range of atomic number and low-pressure electronic structure. Comparing the more recent method of pseudoatom molecular dynamics, atom-in-jellium results were similar: sometimes less accurate, sometimes more. All these techniques exhibited pronounced effects of electronic shell structure in the shock Hugoniot which are not captured by Thomas-Fermi based EOS. These results demonstrate the value of a hierarchical approach to EOS construction, using average-atom techniques with shell structure to populate a wide-range EOS surface efficiently, complemented by more rigorous three-dimensional multiatom calculations to validate and adjust the EOS.

Abstract
We present an equation of state for the solid and liquid phases of lithium fluoride that covers a wide range of conditions from ambient pressure and temperature to the high pressures and temperatures exhibited in shock- and ramp-compression studies. The particular solid phase we have focused on in this work is the B1 phase. We have followed an approach where the pressure and heat-capacity functions of both phases are fit to experimental data and our own quantum molecular dynamics simulations and are then integrated in a thermodynamically consistent way to obtain the corresponding free-energy functions. This approach yields a two-phase equation of state that provides better overall agreement with experimental data than other equations of state for lithium fluoride, such as SESAME 7271v3, LEOS 2240, and the model presented by Smirnov. The last of these is a three-phase equation of state that predicts a B1-B2 transition along the shock Hugoniot at a pressure of about 140 GPa. This solid-solid transition has been a topic of speculation and debate in the literature for over 50 years, culminating in the work of Smirnov, who has developed the only potentially viable equation of state that allows for this transition. We explain why the proposed B1-B2 transition at 140 GPa is not consistent with recent velocimetry data.

Abstract
The fundamental study of phase transition kinetics has motivated experimental methods toward achieving the largest degree of undercooling possible, more recently culminating in the technique of rapid, quasi-isentropic compression. This approach has been demonstrated to freeze water into the high-pressure ice VII phase on nanosecond timescales, with some experiments undergoing heterogeneous nucleation while others, in apparent contradiction, suggest a homogeneous nucleation mode. In this study, we show through a combination of theory, simulation, and analysis of experiments that these seemingly contradictory results are in agreement when viewed from the perspective of classical nucleation theory. We find that, perhaps surprisingly, classical nucleation theory is capable of accurately predicting the solidification kinetics of ice VII formation under an extremely high driving force (|Δμ/k_{B}T|≈1) but only if amended by two important considerations: (i) transient nucleation and (ii) separate liquid and solid temperatures. This is the first demonstration of a model that is able to reproduce the experimentally observed rapid freezing kinetics.

Abstract
We have developed an experimental platform for the National Ignition Facility that uses spherically converging shock waves for absolute equation-of-state (EOS) measurements along the principal Hugoniot. In this Letter, we present one indirect-drive implosion experiment with a polystyrene sample that employs radiographic compression measurements over a range of shock pressures reaching up to 60 Mbar (6 TPa). This significantly exceeds previously published results obtained on the Nova laser [R. Cauble et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1248 (1998)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.80.1248] at a strongly improved precision, allowing us to discriminate between different EOS models. We find excellent agreement with Kohn-Sham density-functional-theory-based molecular dynamics simulations.

Molecular dynamics simulations of an embedded atom copper system in the isobaric-isenthalpic ensemble are used to study the effective solid-liquid interfacial free energy of quasi-spherical solid crystals within a liquid. This is within the larger context of molecular dynamics simulations of this system undergoing solidification, where single individually prepared crystallites of different sizes grow until they reach a thermodynamically stable final state. The resulting equilibrium shapes possess the full structural details expected for solids with weakly anisotropic surface free energies (in these cases, ∼5% radial flattening and rounded [111] octahedral faces). The simplifying assumption of sphericity and perfect isotropy leads to an effective interfacial free energy as appearing in the Gibbs-Thomson equation, which we determine to be ∼177 erg/cm2, roughly independent of crystal size for radii in the 50-250 Å range. This quantity may be used in atomistically informed models of solidification kinetics for this system.

Abstract
Sea trout face growth-mortality trade-offs when entering the sea to feed. Salmon lice epizootics resulting from aquaculture have shifted these trade-offs, as salmon lice might both increase mortality and reduce growth of sea trout. We studied mortality and behavioural adaptations of wild sea trout in a large-scale experiment with acoustic telemetry in an aquaculture intensive area that was fallowed (emptied of fish) synchronically biannually, creating large variations in salmon lice concentrations. We tagged 310 wild sea trout during 3 years, and gave half of the individuals a prophylaxis against further salmon lice infestation. There was no difference in survival among years or between treatments. In years of high infestation pressure, however, sea trout remained closer to the river outlet, used freshwater (FW) habitats for longer periods and returned earlier to the river than in the low infestation year. This indicates that sea trout adapt their migratory behaviour by actively choosing FW refuges from salmon lice to escape from immediate mortality risk. Nevertheless, simulations show that these adaptations can lead to lost growth opportunities. Reduced growth can increase long-term mortality of sea trout due to prolonged exposure to size-dependent predation risk, lead to lower fecundity and, ultimately, reduce the likelihood of sea migration.

Abstract
We report four structures for the 1:1 water-ammonia mixture showing superionic behavior at high temperature with the space groups P4/nmm, Ima2, Pma2, and Pm, which have been identified from evolutionary random structure search calculations at 0 K. Analyzing the respective pair distribution functions and diffusive properties the superionic phase is found to be stable in a temperature range between 1000 and 6000 K for pressures up to 800 GPa. We propose a high-pressure phase diagram of the water-ammonia mixture for the first time and compare the self-diffusion coefficients in the mixture to the ones found in water and ammonia. Finally, possible implications on the interior structure of the giant planets Uranus and Neptune are discussed.

Abstract
In a previous work [C. E. Starrett and D. Saumon, Phys. Rev. E 87, 013104 (2013)] a model for the calculation of electronic and ionic structures of warm and hot dense matter was described and validated. In that model the electronic structure of one atom in a plasma is determined using a density-functional-theory-based average-atom (AA) model and the ionic structure is determined by coupling the AA model to integral equations governing the fluid structure. That model was for plasmas with one nuclear species only. Here we extend it to treat plasmas with many nuclear species, i.e., mixtures, and apply it to a carbon-hydrogen mixture relevant to inertial confinement fusion experiments. Comparison of the predicted electronic and ionic structures with orbital-free and Kohn-Sham molecular dynamics simulations reveals excellent agreement wherever chemical bonding is not significant.

Abstract
We present a new DFTB-p3b density functional tight binding model for hydrogen at extremely high pressures and temperatures, which includes a polarizable basis set (p) and a three-body environmentally dependent repulsive potential (3b). We find that use of an extended basis set is necessary under dissociated liquid conditions to account for the substantial p-orbital character of the electronic states around the Fermi energy. The repulsive energy is determined through comparison to cold curve pressures computed from density functional theory (DFT) for the hexagonal close-packed solid, as well as pressures from thermally equilibrated DFT-MD simulations of the liquid phase. In particular, we observe improved agreement in our DFTB-p3b model with previous theoretical and experimental results for the shock Hugoniot of hydrogen up to 100 GPa and 25000 K, compared to a standard DFTB model using pairwise interactions and an s-orbital basis set, only. The DFTB-p3b approach discussed here provides a general method to extend the DFTB method for a wide variety of materials over a significantly larger range of thermodynamic conditions than previously possible.

Abstract
Dynamic compression by multiple shocks is used to compress iron up to 560 GPa (5.6 Mbar), the highest solid-state pressure yet attained for iron in the laboratory. Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy offers simultaneous density, temperature, and local-structure measurements for the compressed iron. The data show that the close-packed structure of iron is stable up to 560 GPa, the temperature at peak compression is significantly higher than expected from pure compressive work, and the dynamic strength of iron is many times greater than the static strength based on lower pressure data. The results provide the first constraint on the melting line of iron above 400 GPa.

Abstract
We present a method to calculate ionic conductivities of complex fluids from ab initio simulations. This is achieved by combining density functional theory molecular dynamics simulations with polarization theory. Conductivities are then obtained via a Green-Kubo formula using time-dependent effective charges of electronically screened ions. The method is applied to two different phases of warm dense water. We observe large fluctuations in the effective charges; protons can transport effective charges greater than +e for ultrashort time scales. Furthermore, we compare our results with a simpler model of ionic conductivity in water that is based on diffusion coefficients. Our approach can be directly applied to study ionic conductivities of electronically insulating materials of arbitrary composition, e.g., complex molecular mixtures under such extreme conditions that occur deep inside giant planets.

Abstract
The application of static high pressure provides a means to precisely control and investigate many fundamental and unique properties of nanoparticles. CdSe is a model quantum-dot system, the behavior of which under high pressure has been extensively studied; however, the effect of nonuniform stresses on this system has not been fully appreciated. Photoluminescence data obtained from CdSe quantum-dot solids in different stress environments varying from purely uniform to highly nonuniform are presented. Small deviations from a uniform stress distribution profoundly affect the electronic properties of this system. In nonuniform stress environments, a pronounced flattening of the photoluminescence enegy is observed above 3 GPa. The observations are validated with theoretical calculations obtained using an all-atom semiempirical pseudopotential technique. This effect must be considered when investigating other potentially pressure-mediated phenomena.

Abstract
Predation risk often forces prey to trade off good foraging sites for safety, and compromises are expected to be greater in females with vulnerable offspring than in barren females. To determine whether adult females of large herbivores traded off forage for safety, we assessed habitat use and estimated vegetation abundance and quality in relation to distance to escape terrain in marked mountain goats ( Oreamnos americanus de Blainville, 1816). We found that all females spent more time foraging near escape terrain than away from them. Females with young foraged on average 20 m closer to escape terrain than barren females in June, a time when offspring were particularly vulnerable to predation. Plant biomass did not vary with distance to escape terrain in June, but was lower closer than away from escape terrain during all other months. The abundance of forbs and shrubs increased with distance to escape terrain, but their quality did not vary. For grasses and sedges, plant digestible content decreased closer to escape terrain, but interestingly proteins increased. Our results suggest that females traded off forage abundance, and to a lesser extent forage quality, for safety. Compared with barren females, females with offspring may face a trade-off in plant digestible content by foraging in safer areas than barren females.

Abstract
Based on data of the Québec longitudinal study on aging, this article examines crosswise the relation between psychosocial resources of elderly people and their quality of life. The sample of 781 subjects includes three groups of elderly people selected according to their age and their experience or not of a major transitory event: retirement (60-65), widowed (70-75) and functional incapacity (80-85). The results confirm that respondents with a high level of psychosocial resources obtain better performances in the various indexes of quality of life. However, in regards to events, the protective effect of psychosocial resources on quality of life is only shown with those people in retirement. We notice that with people with functional incapacity, social support seem to slightly contribute in maintaining quality of life. Finally, the authors propose certain explanations.

Abstract
The Reality(R) female condom is approved for use during a single act of intercourse, but is expensive relative to other barrier methods. Re-use is a potential strategy to reduce its per-use cost. We tested the structural integrity of female condoms (n = 318) after a single act of vaginal intercourse. We also measured the impact of laboratory washing (1, 5, or 10 times) with and without disinfection on the structural integrity of unused condoms. Structural integrity was measured via 5 tests: seam tensile strength, water leakage, air-burst, tear propagation, and device dimensions. No degradation in device structural integrity occurred after a single use when compared to control for seam tensile (16.0 vs.15.7 mPa; p = 0.558); water leakage (1.9% vs. 0.9%; p = 0.618); air burst (3.9 vs. 3.6 kPa; p <0.001); or tear propagation (344.6 vs. 336.8 psi; p = 0.313). Mean length was slightly increased [single use vs. control (177.9 vs. 172.5 mm; p <0.001)]. No consistent pattern of structural degradation emerged across all wash/disinfection groups. Our data suggest the structural integrity of the female condom remains intact after a single use and cleaning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This article measures the survival rate and explores the changes in functional autonomy among both men and women over a one-year period in a sample of 272 subjects aged 80-85. METHODS Data were taken from the Quebec Longitudinal Study on Aging, a multi-cohort prospective study focusing on health and quality of life. The sample comprises two sub-groups, namely disabled and autonomous subjects. Eligible participants were selected from the Quebec Health Insurance Plan (QHIP) file. However, to obtain the required number of participants, the sample was completed from eligible subjects who volunteered in response to TV, billboard and newspaper advertising about the project. The Functional Autonomy Measurement System (SMAF) was used to assess disability. The SMAF assesses functional disability in 5 domains: activities of daily living (ADL), mobility, instrumental activities (IADL), communication, and mental functioning. RESULTS After one year, nearly 5% of the subjects had died and 72.5% were still autonomous, i.e., they had a score under 4.5 on the SMAF. The annual incidence of the onset of disability (including death, lengthy hospitalization, functional incapacities and cognitive deficits) was 20%. However, no difference was found between the sexes in regard to the risk of losing autonomy. The main areas where disability occurred among the previously autonomous subjects were, in order of importance, domestic tasks, mobility and communication. The study confirmed that it is possible to recover autonomy, even at this advanced age, particularly for women (11.2%), but less so for men (3.6%). CONCLUSION This phenomenon of recovering functional autonomy suggests that octogenarians have a residual potential and confirms the effectiveness of preventive and curative measures and the benefits of interventions by community and family networks.

Abstract
Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (E.M.C.) is a rare lowgrade salivary gland neoplasm that occurs in both major and minor salivary glands. It is characterized by tubular and solid growth pattern with a dual cell population including an inner layer of epithelial cells which are peripherically bounded by a layer of clear myoepithelial cells. This differentiation is confirmed by electron microscopic and immunohistochemical studies. The differential diagnosis included clear cell tumor of the salivary gland and metastatic renal carcinoma. The majority of these tumours arise in the parotid in women with a peak incidence from the 6th to the 8th decade. We report a case of parotidic E.M.C. in a 33 year old man.

Abstract
This research analyzes school integration of a sample of 150 adolescents lacking parental attention. A group of 78 suicidal students is compared to a group of 72 non-suicidals. Students are 14 to 17 years old and are recruited in six schools of the Montreal region. Suicidal adolescents do not experience more problems of discipline, absenteeism, academic performance or relationship with their peers than non suicidal adolescents. However they appear less motivated in school than non suicidal adolescents being more frequently late in class. They also participate less in extracurricular activities offered by the school and experience more conflicts with the school's adults than non-suicidals. Moreover, suicidal adolescents have more characteristics related to dropping out than non suicidals. Finally, the differences observed regarding school integration highlight some signs of vulnerability associated with suicidal behaviour during adolescence when they lack parental attention.

Abstract
Parental care was analyzed separately with the PBI for both father and mother or their surrogate to assess its association with suicidal behavior (attempt or serious ideation). The study was conducted on two French-speaking samples from Montreal: the first included 2,327 high school students and the second 701 young adults (18 to 24) reached by phone. Results showed poor care of father to be highly associated with suicidal behavior in the highschool group. Poor care of the mother and parental divorce obtained a lower association. In the second sample, only poor care of the father was significantly associated with suicidal behavior. The conclusion is that more attention should be focused on the father and that parental divorce may have a short-term effect but not a lasting influence when poor care is absent.

Abstract
Glycophorin A (GPA), the major sialoglycoprotein of human erythrocytes, is the carrier for blood group MN antigens and a receptor for viruses, bacteria and parasites. (1) Three distinct GPA mRNAs (1.0, 1.7 and 2.2 kb) have been previously identified in erythroid tissues by Northern-blot analysis. It is shown here by sequence analysis of several human fetal liver cDNAs, and by transcription start point (tsp) determination using primer extension analysis, that the production of the multiple GPA mRNAs is governed by poly(A) site choice generating 3'-untranslated regions of different length, and not by the tsp heterogeneity, since all messages exhibit the same cap site (tsp). (2) The structural gene encoding GPA has been recently cloned [Vignal et al., Eur. J. Biochem. 184 (1989) 337-344; Kudo and Fukuda, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 86 (1989) 4619-4623] and we have now determined the sequence of a DNA genomic fragment upstream from the tsp. This fragment does not contain the typical TATA and CAAT boxes found in a number of tissue-specific genes, but contains typical motifs like the CACC, nuclear factor erythroid 1 and 2 elements, which have been identified recently in several erythroid-specific promoters, therefore suggesting that transcription of these genes might be regulated by the same or analogous factors.

Abstract
A study made on a sample of 2,327 Montréal area students of third, fourth and fifth year of High School shows that suicidal behaviors ("les suicidaires") account for 13.2 % of youth interrogated, and that 6.7 % admit to having attempted suicide. The suicidal behavior rate is higher among girls than boys and it is lower in schools where the proportion of allophones is over 50 %. The separation of parents and the father's negligence are factors that contribute to raising the rate of suicidal behavior. However, a deceased father or mother has no effect on the rate. The rate of suicidal behavior is at its highest when there is a substitute parent. A relation exists, however, between a father's level of scolarity and the family structure. When students come from an unbroken home, there are fewer suicidal subjects when the father has a high rather than a low level of scolarity ; this difference disappears when the family is separated. However, the authors have noticed a greater rate of separation among parents with a higher level of scolarity. As for the higher rate of suicidal behaviors among girls, it is not entirely connected to poor parent-child relations. The data suggest to the authors that parent conflicts could possibly perturb girls more than boys. And finally, although serious health problems are associated to a higher rate of suicidal behavior, this link is relatively indépendant of the quality of parent-child relations.

Abstract
Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a major serum glycoprotein during embryonic and early postnatal life. A number of diverse biologic functions have been attributed to AFP, including osmotic and carrier function and immunosuppressive activity. In this study we demonstrate that AFP selectively stimulates in vitro proliferation of two distinct subsets of adult murine bone marrow cells. One population of AFP-reactive bone marrow cells expresses surface receptors for soybean agglutinin (SBA) lectin. SBA+ bone marrow cells are resistant to cytotoxic pretreatment with T-cell-specific antisera and are not retained on Ig-anti-Ig affinity columns. The absence of conventional T- and B-cell markers, coupled with the presence of SBA receptors, suggests that AFP-activated non-T bone marrow cells may belong to an immature set of B lymphocytes. A second population of AFP-responsive bone marrow cells expresses the Thy-1+ Lyt 1+2- phenotype characteristic of conventional mature adult T helper cells. The potential physiological relevance of the mitogenic effects of AFP on bone marrow cells with respect to immunoregulatory processes in the fetal/newborn environments is discussed.
