Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

Termination of convulsion seizures by destabilizing and perturbing seizure memory engrams

Epileptogenesis, arising from alterations in synaptic strength, shares mechanistic and phenotypic parallels with memory formation. However, direct evidence supporting the existence of seizure memory remains scarce. Leveraging a conditioned seizure memory (CSM) paradigm, we found that CSM enabled the environmental cue to trigger seizure repetitively, and activating cue-responding engram cells could generate CSM artificially. Moreover, cue exposure initiated an analogous process of memory reconsolidation driven by mammalian target of rapamycin-brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling. Pharmacological targeting of the mammalian target of rapamycin pathway within a limited time window reduced seizures in animals and interictal epileptiform discharges in patients with refractory seizures. Our findings reveal a causal link between seizure memory engrams and seizures, which leads us to a deeper understanding of epileptogenesis and points to a promising direction for epilepsy treatment.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

Depression-associated gut microbes, metabolites and clinical trials

Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders today. Over the past decade, there has been considerable attention given to the field of gut microbiota associated with depression. A substantial body of research indicates a bidirectional communication pathway between gut microbiota and the brain. In this review, we extensively detail the correlation between gut microbiota, including Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum, and metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) concerning depression. Furthermore, we delve into the potential health benefits of microbiome-targeted therapies, encompassing probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics, in alleviating depression. Lastly, we underscore the importance of employing a constraint-based modeling framework in the era of systems medicine to contextualize metabolomic measurements and integrate multi-omics data. This approach can offer valuable insights into the complex metabolic host-microbiota interactions, enabling personalized recommendations for potential biomarkers, novel drugs, and treatments for depression.

Observation of WZγ Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst)  fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06  fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare Z Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72  nb^{-1} and 257  pb^{-1} of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. A Comparative Population-Based Study of Tracheal and Lung Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Thoracic adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is very rare, and its clinicopathological characteristics, treatment and prognosis have not been fully elucidated. Previous studies did not differentiate between tracheal and lung lesions.

MATERIALS/METHODS

We identified tracheal ACC (TACC) and lung and bronchus ACC (LACC) patients from our cancer center (from 2005 to 2022) and the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (from 2000 to 2009). Incidence was calculated and trends were quantified. Significant prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) were reviewed and analyzed by using Cox proportional hazards regression. Then, two nomograms predicting OS of TACC and LACC were constructed based on the SEER database and validated externally by using the separate cohort.

RESULTS

There was an upward trend from 2000 to 2019 for LACC while a downward trend from 2000 to 2009 was shown for TACC. Totally, 55 TACC and 25 LACC were included in our cohort, 121 TACC and 162 LACC included in the SEER cohort. There were larger tumor sizes, more lymph nodes and distant metastases for LACC patients than TACC patients. The proportion of patients receiving radiotherapy were higher for TACC than LACC. More patients with TACC received surgery and perioperative radiotherapy than those with LACC. Patients with LACC had significantly worse OS than patients with TACC (SEER cohort: 93.7 mons vs. 127.0 mons, p = 0.001, our cohort: 72.2 months vs. 130.8months, p = 0.061). Age, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis and radiation and/or surgery were identified as independent prognostic factors for OS of TACC. Laterality, distant metastasis and surgery were identified for LACC. The discrimination of the nomogram revealed good prognostic accuracy and clinical applicability as indicated by C-index values of 0.753 and 0.833 for the training cohort and the external validation cohort for TACC, and 0.739 and 0.786 for LACC.

CONCLUSION

TACC and LACC are different in incidence, clinical features, prognosis. Compared with LACC, radiotherapy combined with surgery is more important for TACC. Two nomograms were established for TACC and LACC respectively to help physicians make more individualized survival predictions and clinical decisions.

Strong Constraints on Jet Quenching in Centrality-Dependent p+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV from ATLAS

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36  nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6  pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5  GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4  GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H→γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

COVID-19 and kidney: role of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the induction of renal damage

OBJECTIVE

SARS-CoV-2 causes acute respiratory disease, interstitial and alveolar pneumonia, and involves numerous organs and systems such as the kidney, heart, digestive tract, blood, and nervous system. We aimed to evaluate the incidence of renal manifestations in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 infection.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We performed a monocentric, cross-sectional, observational study, conducted on 114 patients with SARS-CoV-2. Clinical and laboratory parameters [renal function, serum electrolytes, inflammatory state, blood gas analysis, Interleukin 6 (IL-6) and urinalysis] were evaluated. The same values were checked out after two months (T1), however after negativization.

RESULTS

We enrolled 114 patients (59 males) with a mean age of 63.8 ± 13.9 years. We found hematuria in 48 patients (55.8%), proteinuria in 33 patients (38.4%), leukocyturia in 61 patients (70.9%), acute kidney injury (AKI) in 28 patients (24.6%), AKI in chronic kidney disease (CKD) in 24 patients (21.1%). Moreover, we found a significant increase of inflammatory indexes as C Reactive Protein (CRP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), alpha 1 and alpha 2 globulins with a subsequent reduction at T1 (p = 0.016, p < 0.001, p = 0.005, p = 0.007; respectively). Hemoglobin and erythrocyte values significantly decreased (p < 0.001, p = 0.003, respectively), and we found lymphopenia (p < 0.001). Also, we found elevated levels of the D-Dimer (p < 0.001) and a significant increase in the International Normalized Ratio (INR) (p = 0.038). We also showed a significant improvement after negativization in oxygen partial pressure (p = 0.001) and oxygen saturation (p < 0.001) and a significant increase in pH (p = 0.018) and bicarbonate concentration (p = 0.042). Moreover, we found a significant increase in IL-6 (p = 0.004). Also, we reported mild hyponatremia and hypokalemia with subsequent significant recovery (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, respectively) and mild hypochloremia with a recovery to the limits of statistical significance (p = 0.053). At the entrance, we found an increase in serum glucose with a significant reduction during recovery (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of AKI and/or CKD and/or abnormal urinalysis in patients diagnosed with COVID-19 on admission seems to be high and appears as a negative prognostic factor. Urinalysis appears to be very useful in unveiling the potential kidney impairment of COVID-19 patients; therefore, urinalysis could be used to reflect and predict the disease severity. We also recommend a careful evaluation of metabolic alterations, inflammatory states, and electrolytic disorders in COVID-19 patients.

A survey of Salmonella, Escherichia coli and antimicrobial resistance in frozen, part-cooked, breaded or battered chicken products on retail sale in the United Kingdom

AIM

Frozen, breaded chicken products have been implicated in Salmonella outbreaks, and may be incorrectly perceived as ready-to-eat, leading to mishandling or undercooking by consumers. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Salmonella and antimicrobial resistant (AMR) E. coli in these products.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Samples of frozen, raw or partly cooked, coated chicken products were collected between April and July 2021 from retailers in the UK and tested for Salmonella spp., generic Escherichia coli, extended spectrum beta-lactamase-producing, colistin-resistant and carbapenem-resistant E. coli. One isolate of each bacterial type from each sample was selected for minimum inhibitory concentration determination for a range of antimicrobials. Salmonella was detected in 5 of 310 (1.6%) samples, identified as Salmonella Infantis in three samples and S. Java in two. One S. Infantis isolate was multi-drug resistant, while the other Salmonella isolates were each resistant to at least one class of antimicrobials. Generic E. coli were detected in 113 samples (36.4%), with multi-drug resistance being demonstrated in 20.0% of these. E. coli with the ESBL phenotype were detected in 15 (4.8%) of samples and the AmpC phenotype in 2 (0.6%). A colistin resistant E. coli was isolated from one sample; this possessed the mcr-1 gene. No carbapenem-resistant E. coli were detected. The five Salmonella-positive samples from this study, together with 20 Salmonella-positive products from an earlier study in 2020/2021, were cooked according to the manufacturers' instructions. Following cooking, Salmonella was not detected in any samples.

CONCLUSIONS

This survey demonstrates continued contamination of frozen, coated chicken products with Salmonella, and provides data on the prevalence of AMR in these products.

Kidney dysfunction is associated with adverse outcomes in internal medicine COVID-19 hospitalized patients

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the kidney involvement assessed by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), the associations with specific clinical disease variables and laboratory findings, and the predictive role of eGFR on clinical outcomes of patients admitted with COVID-19 in Internal Medicine ward in the first wave.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Clinical data of 162 consecutive patients hospitalized in the University Hospital Policlinico Umberto I in Rome, Italy, between December 2020 to May 2021 were collected and retrospectively analyzed.

RESULTS

The median eGFR was significantly lower in patients with worse outcomes than in patients with favorable outcomes [56.64 ml/min/1.73 m2 (IQR 32.27-89.73) vs. 83.39 ml/min/1.73 m2 (IQR 69.59-97.08), p<0.001]. Patients with eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 (n=38) were significantly older compared to patients with normal eGFR [82 years (IQR 74-90) vs. 61 years (IQR 53-74), p<0.001] and they had fever less frequently [39.5% vs. 64.2%, p<0.01]. Kaplan-Meier curves demonstrated that overall survival was significantly shorter in patients with eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 (p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, only eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 [HR=2.915 (95% CI=1.110-7.659), p<0.05] and platelet to lymphocyte ratio [HR=1.004 (95% CI=1.002-1.007), p<0.01] showed a significant predictive value for death or transfer to intensive care unit (ICU).

CONCLUSIONS

Kidney involvement on admission was an independent predictor for death or transfer to ICU among hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The presence of chronic kidney disease could be regarded as a relevant factor in risk stratification for COVID-19.

Patterns of Mammography Screening in Women with Breast Cancer in a Kansas Community

Purpose

The objective of this study was to examine patterns of mammography screening prior to breast cancer diagnosis in all women with breast cancer in a Kansas community.

Methods

The study population included 508 women in the Kansas Cancer Registry database diagnosed with breast cancer between 2013-2014 who were patients and residents of a defined area at the time of diagnosis. Screening history within 4 years of diagnosis was obtained. Poisson regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between sociodemographic factors and biennial screening.

Results

About 41.5% of women received at least biennial screening, while 22.1% received less than biennial screening and 36.4% had no screening. About 40% of women aged 50-64, 50.4% aged 65-74, and 48.3% aged 75-84 received biennial screening (p=0.002). Women diagnosed with in-situ and localized breast cancers had significantly higher proportions of biennial screening (46.7% and 48.6%, respectively; p < 0.001). Average tumor size was 15.7, 17.4, and 24.4 mm, for women who received at least biennial, some, and no screening, respectively (p < 0.001). Results from Poisson regression analysis showed the adjusted relative risk associated with rural/mixed residence at diagnosis and Medicaid beneficiary was 0.45 and 0.40 (p=0.003 and p=0.032) respectively.

Conclusions

Biennial mammography screening was associated with lower breast cancer stage and smaller tumor size, illustrating the importance of screening as early detection. Different outreach strategies may be necessary to reach women within varied age groups or geographical regions to help increase the number of women who remain up-to-date with mammography screening.

Microbiological Quality of Ready-to-Eat Salad Products Collected from Retail and Catering Settings in England during 2020 to 2021

ABSTRACT

Salad and other fresh produce were collected in England from retail and catering businesses during 2020 to 2021 and were tested for Salmonella, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Listeria, Bacillus cereus, and E. coli. Of the 604 samples collected, 57% were from retail settings and 43% were from catering settings; 61% were either salad leaves or salad leaves mixed with other products. Equal numbers of samples were prepacked or loose, and 50% were refrigerated at the time of sampling. Combining results for all microbiological parameters, 84% were interpreted as satisfactory, 12% were interpreted as borderline, and 4% were interpreted as unsatisfactory. One sample (prepacked leaves, cucumber, and tomato from a caterer) was categorized as unacceptable and potentially injurious because of detection of STEC O76; no STEC from human infections in the United Kingdom matched this isolate. No Salmonella enterica was detected, but Listeria monocytogenes was recovered from 11 samples: 1 at 20 CFU/g and the remainder at <20 CFU/g. B. cereus was detected at borderline levels (103 to ≤105 CFU/g) in 9% of samples and at an unsatisfactory level (>105 CFU/g) in one sample. E. coli was detected in 3% of samples at borderline levels (20 to ≤102 CFU/g) and in 4% at unsatisfactory levels (>102 CFU/g). There was a significant association between detection of L. monocytogenes and borderline or unsatisfactory levels of E. coli. There were no specific risk profiles associated with products with the higher levels of B. cereus, STEC, or Listeria, but elevated levels of E. coli were predominantly confined to loose products from the United Kingdom collected from caterers in summer or autumn 2021 and may have resulted from relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions. Among the L. monocytogenes isolates, only one matched those from human cases and was recovered from a prepacked mixed salad from a catering business in 2021. This isolate was the same strain as that responsible for a multicountry outbreak (2015 to 2018) associated with Hungarian-produced frozen sweet corn; no link to the outbreak food chain was established.

HIGHLIGHTS

Management of systemic prostate cancer: current algorithm from castration sensitive to castration resistant setting

In recent years, the advanced knowledge of clinical, biological and molecular features of prostate cancer have led to the introduction of new drugs and have allowed the relocation of old drugs in different settings. In this way, the new concepts of systemic disease arise: high risk or high volume vs. low risk and low volume disease castration sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC), diversifying the use of previously approved drugs (CRPC) and opening new scenarios for sequence therapy. The aim of this review is to integrate new developments into the medical management of systemic prostate cancer.

Observation of WWW Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820±100 (stat)±80 (syst)  fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511±18  fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

Literature review on the cross-link between ocular and renal disease: renin angiotensin aldosterone system is a main actor

OBJECTIVE

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and ocular disease share several cardiovascular risk factors as well as pathogenetic mechanisms having Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS) as main actor. Moreover, kidney and eyes have common genetic and embryonic origin. In this literature review, we present main evidence supporting this association for early identifying diseases affecting both systems and evaluating potential multi-target therapeutic strategies.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We performed a literature review of the current peer-reviewed English-language randomized controlled studies (RCTs), reference lists of nephrology or ophthalmology textbooks, review articles and relevant studies with ocular or eye and kidney or renal diseases as keywords until March 2020. Prospective and retrospective studies as well as meta-analyses and latest systematic reviews were included.

RESULTS

We evaluated a total of 683 records, finally selecting 119 articles related to ocular and renal diseases. Records were divided into two areas: chronic and acute kidney disease and ocular or eye diseases. Some of the examined studies were discarded for population biases/intervention or deemed unfit.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on our results, we conclude that there is evidence of a clear association between kidney and eye diseases, being this cross-link mainly based on RAAS dysregulation. Our review suggests that it may be useful to screen CKD patients for associated ocular diseases, such as cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. A comprehensive study of CKD and proteinuric patients should include careful eye examination. Renal impairment in young patients should prompt a search for ocular disease, such as TUNA syndrome or oculo-renal syndrome, in particular if family history of concurrent ocular and renal disease is present. Anti-RAAS agents are mostly recommended in patients with renal and ocular impairment.

A detailed map of Higgs boson interactions by the ATLAS experiment ten years after the discovery

The standard model of particle physics1-4 describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our Universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the standard model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles5-9. The quantum excitation of this field, known as the Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson of the standard model was observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN10,11. Since then, more than 30 times as many Higgs bosons have been recorded by the ATLAS experiment, enabling much more precise measurements and new tests of the theory. Here, on the basis of this larger dataset, we combine an unprecedented number of production and decay processes of the Higgs boson to scrutinize its interactions with elementary particles. Interactions with gluons, photons, and W and Z bosons-the carriers of the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces-are studied in detail. Interactions with three third-generation matter particles (bottom (b) and top (t) quarks, and tau leptons (τ)) are well measured and indications of interactions with a second-generation particle (muons, μ) are emerging. These tests reveal that the Higgs boson discovered ten years ago is remarkably consistent with the predictions of the theory and provide stringent constraints on many models of new phenomena beyond the standard model.

961 ‘WE CARE!’: CARE WORKERS’ SELF-PERCEIVED MEANING OF RESIDENTIAL AGED CARE WORK

Introduction

Aged care workers in residential care homes of the elderly (RCHEs) are socially devalued as less skilled, low-paid, and doing ‘dirty work’. Care workers’ insider experiences with the meaning of residential aged care work are largely absent from the community and the literature.

Method

A qualitative study was conducted to examine the self-perceived meaning of work (MOW) among care workers in RCHEs in Hong Kong, an East Asian metropolis with a rapidly aging population, and unique socio-cultural meanings of elderly care. Adopting the Grounded Theory Method, in-depth interviews with 27 care workers in 6 RCHEs were conducted.

Results

Findings suggest that regardless of the job requirements of carrying out ‘dirty tasks’ and shared experiences of public devaluations, RCHE care workers find positive meanings in their work including: contributing to the greater good of helping the elderly; establishing meaningful relationships; forming a professional identity of geriatric care; achieving personal growth; ensuring job security and benefits in the aged care job market. Care workers find their work meaningful primarily because it is essential to maintain the elderly’s health and quality of life, which echoes with the Chinese cultural values of ‘accumulating fortune’ and ‘respecting the elderly’. Engaging in residential care work allows care workers to build long-term relationships with the elderly, through which they found joys and knowledge of life such as letting go. Care workers propose that geriatric care is highly skillful and professional, requiring communication, coordination, and chronic illness care skills. Care workers identify several inhibitors of attaining MOW, including heavy workloads, manpower shortage, and dehumanizing bureaucratic practices.

Conclusion

Care workers offer counter-narratives of public devaluation and reframe the meaning of care work in RCHEs. These findings have broader implications on policy, professional, and education interventions in promoting the public recognition of aged care work.

962 FROM DIRTY WORK TO MEANINGFUL WORK: A PHOTOVOICE STUDY OF RESIDENTIAL AGED CARE IN HONG KONG

Introduction

Caregiving work in ‘residential care homes for the elderly’ (RCHEs) has long been devalued as ‘dirty work’, which contributes to RCHE’s acute shortages of health care staff in Hong Kong. This study aims to unearth the voice of the RCHEs workers by delineating their insider perspectives of RCHE work.

Method

Adopting the Photovoice method, a participatory methodology, 30 RCHEs care workers (i.e. Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, Health Workers, and Personal Care Workers) were invited to take photos that showcase their perspectives of doing aged care work. Two in-depth interviews were conducted with each research participant before and after the photo-taking procedure. Thematic analysis is then conducted to analyse the visual and verbal data.

Results

Findings show that RCHEs care workers perceive and revitalize the nature and meaning of their work in four ways: conducting ‘dirty tasks’ to help the elderly; valuing and engaging in long-term relationships; learning in work; and cultural meaning of working with the elderly. Contrary to public devaluation, RCHE care workers normalize the delivery of ‘dirty tasks’ (i.e. handling human excreta and wounds) as being helpful to both the elderly and the family members. Besides the routine caring tasks on paper, care workers highlight that they spend a lot of unrecognized labor to build rapport and provide emotional support to the elderly and their family members in their work. They also report that learning and self-development are an important part of residential care work, both in terms of professional knowledge and personal growth. Taking care of the elderly also conveys positive cultural meanings in Chinese society.

Conclusion

Policy, professional and educational initiatives of geriatric care primarily emphasize the delivery of clinical tasks (caring for), while undermining the emotional and relational aspects of aged care work.

Assessment of the Microbiological Quality and Safety of Unpasteurized Milk Cheese for Sale in England between 2019 and 2020

ABSTRACT

Cheese made with unpasteurized milk has been associated with outbreaks of illness. However, there are limited data on the prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in these products and a lack of clarity over the significance of E. coli as a general indicator of hygiene in raw milk cheeses. The aim of this study was to provide further data to address both of these issues, as well as assessing the overall microbiological quality of raw milk cheeses available to consumers in England. A total of 629 samples of cheese were collected from retailers, catering premises, and manufacturers throughout England. The majority (80%) were made using cow's milk, with 14% made from sheep's milk and 5% from goat's milk. Samples were from 18 different countries of origin, with the majority originating from either the United Kingdom (40%) or France (35%). When interpreted against European Union microbiological criteria and United Kingdom guidance, 82% were considered to be of satisfactory microbiological quality, 5% were borderline, and 12% were unsatisfactory. Four samples (0.6%) were potentially injurious to health due to the isolation of STEC from one, >104 CFU/g of coagulase-positive staphylococci in two, and >100 CFU/g of Listeria monocytogenes in the fourth sample. Indicator E. coli and Listeria species were detected more frequently in soft compared with hard cheese. Higher levels of indicator E. coli were significantly associated with a greater likelihood of detecting Shiga toxin genes (stx1 and/or stx2).

HIGHLIGHTS

Search for Lepton-Flavor Violation in Z-Boson Decays with τ Leptons with the ATLAS Detector

A search for lepton-flavor-violating Z→eτ and Z→μτ decays with pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of Run 2 pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and is combined with the results of a similar ATLAS search in the final state in which the τ lepton decays hadronically, using the same data set as well as Run 1 data. The addition of leptonically decaying τ leptons significantly improves the sensitivity reach for Z→ℓτ decays. The Z→ℓτ branching fractions are constrained in this analysis to B(Z→eτ)<7.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<7.2×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level. The combination with the previously published analyses sets the strongest constraints to date: B(Z→eτ)<5.0×10^{-6} and B(Z→μτ)<6.5×10^{-6} at 95% confidence level.

Screening of QTc interval and global autonomic activity in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis hypertensive patients

OBJECTIVE

Arterial hypertension (AH) represents a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is associated to several complications, such as prolonged corrected QT (QTc) interval and impaired heart rate variability (HRV). Secondary causes of AH include autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS), both known to be related to arrhythmic risk and autonomic imbalance. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether global autonomic activity and QTc interval differently affect ADPKD and ARAS hypertensive patients.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

An observational study was performed on 59 patients: 16 ADPKD patients and 19 diagnosed with ARAS, compared to 24 healthy controls (HC). All patients underwent clinical evaluation, biochemical lab tests, 24-hour electrocardiogram (ECG) and renal Doppler ultrasound. HRV was assessed through the analysis of 24-hour ECG to detect standard deviation of normal-to-normal RR intervals (SDNN). QTc interval was defined as prolonged when > 440 msec.

RESULTS

SDNN was significantly lower in ADPKD and ARAS patients than HC (p < 0.0001) and no significant differences were found between ADPKD and ARAS patients (p > 0.05). QTc was found significantly higher in ARAS patients than HC (p = 0.001) and in ARAS patients than ADPKD patients (p = 0.004).

CONCLUSIONS

The pathogenesis of hypertension in ADPKD and ARAS patients is related to the activation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS). In ADPKD, cyst enlargement leads to kidney ischemia and renin release, associated to endothelial dysfunction, low nitric oxide and sympathetic tone activation. Differently, reduction in renal perfusion pressure activates RAAS and renal adrenergic nerves in ARAS patients. We can speculate that prolonged QTc interval is more present in ARAS vs. ADPKD hypertensive patients due to a greater activation of RAAS. We suggest adding 24-hour HRV evaluation in association with traditional risk factors in course of ADPKD and ARAS hypertension to better stratify cardiovascular risk in these groups of patients.

Search for New Phenomena in Final States with Two Leptons and One or No b-Tagged Jets at sqrt[s]=13 TeV Using the ATLAS Detector

A search for new phenomena is presented in final states with two leptons and one or no b-tagged jets. The event selection requires the two leptons to have opposite charge, the same flavor (electrons or muons), and a large invariant mass. The analysis is based on the full run-2 proton-proton collision dataset recorded at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb^{-1}. No significant deviation from the expected background is observed in the data. Inspired by the B-meson decay anomalies, a four-fermion contact interaction between two quarks (b, s) and two leptons (ee or μμ) is used as a benchmark signal model, which is characterized by the energy scale and coupling, Λ and g_{*}, respectively. Contact interactions with Λ/g_{*} lower than 2.0 (2.4) TeV are excluded for electrons (muons) at the 95% confidence level, still far below the value that is favored by the B-meson decay anomalies. Model-independent limits are set as a function of the minimum dilepton invariant mass, which allow the results to be reinterpreted in various signal scenarios.

Developmental toxicity of cryptotanshinone on the early-life stage of zebrafish development

Cryptotanshinone (Cry) has multiple potential functions in treating different diseases. Most studies on Cry focus on its pharmacological effects and mechanisms, but toxicological reports on Cry are rare. Zebrafish is used as a model organism in drug development as it saves costs and time. This work aimed to investigate the toxicity of Cry on zebrafish. Results showed that growth retardation, pericardial edema, and scoliosis occurred when zebrafish embryos were exposed to Cry, indicating its teratogenic effects. Cell apoptosis was observed in the brainstem area of embryos using acridine orange staining, and qPCR showed that caspase-3 was increased in Cry-exposed embryos. The results of locomotor activity and touched-evoke escape reaction experiments showed that Cry significantly reduced the swimming speed and escape reaction time of larvae.

Severe deficiency of the voltage-gated sodium channel NaV1.2 elevates neuronal excitability in adult mice

Scn2a encodes the voltage-gated sodium channel NaV1.2, a main mediator of neuronal action potential firing. The current paradigm suggests that NaV1.2 gain-of-function variants enhance neuronal excitability, resulting in epilepsy, whereas NaV1.2 deficiency impairs neuronal excitability, contributing to autism. However, this paradigm does not explain why ∼20%-30% of individuals with NaV1.2 deficiency still develop seizures. Here, we report the counterintuitive finding that severe NaV1.2 deficiency results in increased neuronal excitability. Using a NaV1.2-deficient mouse model, we show enhanced intrinsic excitability of principal neurons in the prefrontal cortex and striatum, brain regions known to be involved in Scn2a-related seizures. This increased excitability is autonomous and reversible by genetic restoration of Scn2a expression in adult mice. RNA sequencing reveals downregulation of multiple potassium channels, including KV1.1. Correspondingly, KV channel openers alleviate the hyperexcitability of NaV1.2-deficient neurons. This unexpected neuronal hyperexcitability may serve as a cellular basis underlying NaV1.2 deficiency-related seizures.

Search for Displaced Leptons in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for charged leptons with large impact parameters using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data from the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented, addressing a long-standing gap in coverage of possible new physics signatures. Results are consistent with the background prediction. This search provides unique sensitivity to long-lived scalar supersymmetric lepton partners (sleptons). For lifetimes of 0.1 ns, selectron, smuon, and stau masses up to 720, 680, and 340  GeV, respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level, drastically improving on the previous best limits from LEP.

The structure and unzipping behavior of dumbbell and hairpin DNA revealed by real-time nanopore sensing

Hairpin structures play an essential role in DNA replication, transcription, and recombination. Single-molecule studies enable the real-time measurement and observation of the energetics and dynamics of hairpin structures, including folding and DNA-protein interactions. Nanopore sensing is emerging as a powerful tool for DNA sensing and sequencing, and previous research into hairpins using an α-hemolysin (α-HL) nanopore suggested that hairpin DNA enters from its stem side. In this work, the translocation and interaction of hairpin and dumbbell DNA samples with varying stems, loops, and toeholds were investigated systematically using a Mycobacterium smegmatis porin A (MspA) nanopore. It was found that these DNA constructs could translocate through the pore under a bias voltage above +80 mV, and blockage events with two conductance states could be observed. The events of the lower blockage were correlated with the loop size of the hairpin or dumbbell DNA (7 nt to 25 nt), which could be attributed to non-specific collisions with the pore, whereas the dwell time of events with the higher blockage were correlated with the stem length, thus indicating effective translocation. Furthermore, dumbbell DNA with and without a stem opening generated different dwell times when driven through the MspA nanopore. Finally, a new strategy based on the dwell time difference was developed to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). These results demonstrated that the unzipping behaviors and DNA-protein interactions of hairpin and dumbbell DNA could be revealed using nanopore technology, and this could be further developed to create sensors for the secondary structures of nucleic acids.

Increase of renal resistive index and mineral metabolism disorder in patients with acute coronary syndrome with preserved renal function

OBJECTIVE

Coronary artery disease is one of the first causes of death in the Western world; for this reason, it is essential to identify new, systemic, non-invasive and low-cost cardiovascular risk markers. The acute coronary syndrome includes ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) and Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI), based on ECG findings. We aimed to evaluate Renal Resistive Index (RRI) as a marker of cardiovascular risk and assess the associations with other cardiovascular risk factors (metabolic indexes, mineral metabolism disorders and endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis markers) in STEMI and NSTEMI patients.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Clinical, laboratory and instrumental examinations as metabolic and inflammation indexes, markers of atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction (renal function, mineral metabolism disorders, inflammation indexes, Intima Media Thickness (IMT), Ankle Brachial Pressure Index, Left Ventricular Mass Index, Relative Wall Thickness) were performed.

RESULTS

Eighty-one patients with STEMI and NSTEMI were enrolled. We showed a significant positive correlation between RRI and age (p<0.01), intact parathyroid hormone (p<0.01) and IMT (p<0.01), as well as a significant negative correlation between RRI and body surface area (BSA) (p=0.02), estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) (p<0.01), serum calcium (p<0.01) and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (p=0.03). Moreover, we found a significant correlation between RRI and male patients (p<0.01), coronary artery disease history (CAD) (p=0.049), hypertension (p=0.025) and left ventricular eccentric hypertrophy (LVEH) (p=0.047).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study showed an association between RRI and the main traditional and non-traditional cardiovascular risk factors involved in atherosclerosis pathogenesis, such as age, BSA, hypertension, male sex, CAD history, mineral metabolism disorders and LVEH, in patients with preserved renal function. Moreover, we found a significant correlation between RRI and eGFR, suggesting that RRI could be useful in the evaluation of both renal function and progression of renal damage, even in an early stage with a conserved or only slightly reduced kidney function. We also showed a significant correlation with some markers of systemic atherosclerosis such as IMT and LVEH. For a more precise assessment of prognosis and cardiovascular risk in patients with high cardiovascular mortality, we suggest performing a systematic RRI evaluation, considering the non-invasive nature of the procedure, its reproducibility, easy execution, and low costs.

Combining robotics with enhanced serotonin-driven cortical plasticity improves post-stroke motor recovery

Despite recent progresses in robotic rehabilitation technologies, their efficacy for post-stroke motor recovery is still limited. Such limitations might stem from the insufficient enhancement of plasticity mechanisms, crucial for functional recovery. Here, we designed a clinically relevant strategy that combines robotic rehabilitation with chemogenetic stimulation of serotonin release to boost plasticity. These two approaches acted synergistically to enhance post-stroke motor performance. Indeed, mice treated with our combined therapy showed substantial functional gains that persisted beyond the treatment period and generalized to non-trained tasks. Motor recovery was associated with a reduction in electrophysiological and neuroanatomical markers of GABAergic neurotransmission, suggesting disinhibition in perilesional areas. To unveil the translational potentialities of our approach, we specifically targeted the serotonin 1A receptor by delivering Buspirone, a clinically approved drug, in stroke mice undergoing robotic rehabilitation. Administration of Buspirone restored motor impairments similarly to what observed with chemogenetic stimulation, showing the immediate translational potential of this combined approach to significantly improve motor recovery after stroke.

[GCS score combined with CT score and serum S100B protein level Can evaluate severity and early prognosis of acute traumatic brain injury]

OBJECTIVE

To explore the value of Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score and CT score combined with serum S100B protein level for evaluation of injury severity and predicting early prognosis of acute traumatic brain injury (TBI).

OBJECTIVE

A total of 108 patients with TBI admitted within 24 h after injury in the Emergency Department of West China Hospital from May, 2019 to May, 2020 were enrolled in this study. The clinical data, laboratory test results, CT examination, GCS score, Full Outline of Unresponsiveness score, Fisher CT classification, Rotterdam CT score, and serum S100B protein level of the patients were collected upon admission. The patients were followed up for 28 days and divided based on their Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) scores into poor prognosis group (GOS 1-3) and good prognosis group (GOS 4-5). The indexes related to poor prognosis were analyzed for their efficacy for predicting the patinets' prognosis. According to the results of head CT, the patients were divided into CT^- positive (CT⁺) group and CT^- negative (CT^-) group, and the efficacy of serum S100B protein level for predicting CT positivity was evaluated.

OBJECTIVE

Compared with those with favorable prognosis, the patients with poor prognosis had significantly lower GCS scores (P < 0.01) and higher Rotterdam CT score and serum S100B protein levels (P < 0.01). Among the 3 index, serum S100B protein level had the highest AUC value (0.79); among the combined indexes, GCS score combined with serum S100B protein had the highest AUC value (0.80). Serum S100B protein level was significantly higher in CT⁺ group than in CT - group (P < 0.05) with a significant correlation with Rotterdam CT score (r=0.26, P < 0.01).

OBJECTIVE

Serum S100B protein level, GCS score, and Rotterdam CT score can be used as indicators for evaluating the severity of acute TBI, and they are all closely related with early prognosis of the patients. The combination of serum S100B protein, GCS score and Rotterdam CT score has better performance than any of the 3 indexes alone for predicting early prognosis of the patients. Serum S100B protein level is correlated with head imaging findings of patients with acute TBI, but its value in selection of appropriate imaging modalities awaits further investigation.

Autonomic dysfunction in kidney diseases

Kidney diseases are associated with many cardiovascular risk factors, such as anaemia, inflammation and chronic volume overload. Changes in the sympathovagal balance are common findings in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). In particular, sympathetic hyperactivity is linked with an increase in resting heart rate leading to myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis. The latter increases the risk of sudden cardiac death from fatal arrythmias and therefore assessment of both sympathetic and parasympathetic tones could be clinically relevant in ESRD patients. Heart rate variability and other indices are currently used to evaluate the functionality of the autonomic nervous system. Some of these have emerged as potential diagnostic tools that can support clinical decision-making processes and therapeutic strategies in patients with renal disease, including those who are on dialysis replacement therapy. In this review, we summarize the impact and the relationships between sympathovagal disturbances and kidney diseases, replacement therapies and transplantation.
