Coherent Vibrations Promote Charge-Transfer across a Graphene-Based Interface

Discerning the impact of the coherent motion of the nuclei on the timing and efficiency of charge transfer at the donor-acceptor interface is essential for designing performance-enhanced optoelectronic devices. Here, we employ an experimental approach using photocurrent detection in coherent multidimensional spectroscopy to excite a donor aromatic macrocycle and collect the charge transferred to a 2D acceptor layer. For this purpose, we prepared a cobalt phthalocyanine-graphene (CoPc-Gr) interface. Unlike blends, the well-ordered architecture achieved through the physical separation of the two layers allows us to unambiguously collect the electrical signal from graphene alone and associate it with a microscopic understanding of the whole process. The CoPc-Gr interface exhibits an ultrafast electron-transfer signal, stemming from an interlayer mechanism. Remarkably, the signal presents an oscillating time evolution modulated by coherent vibrations originating from the laser-excited CoPc states. By performing Fourier analysis on the beatings and correlating it with the Raman features, along with a comprehensive first-principles characterization of the vibrational coupling in the CoPc excited states, we successfully identify both the orbitals and molecular vibrations that promote the charge transfer at the interface.

Halide Perovskite Artificial Solids as a New Platform to Simulate Collective Phenomena in Doped Mott Insulators

The development of quantum simulators, artificial platforms where the predictions of many-body theories of correlated quantum materials can be tested in a controllable and tunable way, is one of the main challenges of condensed matter physics. Here we introduce artificial lattices made of lead halide perovskite nanocubes as a new platform to simulate and investigate the physics of correlated quantum materials. We demonstrate that optical injection of quantum confined excitons in this system realizes the two main features that ubiquitously pervade the phase diagram of many quantum materials: collective phenomena, in which long-range orders emerge from incoherent fluctuations, and the excitonic Mott transition, which has one-to-one correspondence with the insulator-to-metal transition described by the repulsive Hubbard model in a magnetic field. Our results demonstrate that time-resolved experiments provide a quantum simulator that is able to span a parameter range relevant for a broad class of phenomena, such as superconductivity and charge-density waves.

A Chemiresistor Sensor Array Based on Graphene Nanostructures: From the Detection of Ammonia and Possible Interfering VOCs to Chemometric Analysis

Sensor arrays are currently attracting the interest of researchers due to their potential of overcoming the limitations of single sensors regarding selectivity, required by specific applications. Among the materials used to develop sensor arrays, graphene has not been so far extensively exploited, despite its remarkable sensing capability. Here we present the development of a graphene-based sensor array prepared by dropcasting nanostructure and nanocomposite graphene solution on interdigitated substrates, with the aim to investigate the capability of the array to discriminate several gases related to specific applications, including environmental monitoring, food quality tracking, and breathomics. This goal is achieved in two steps: at first the sensing properties of the array have been assessed through ammonia exposures, drawing the calibration curves, estimating the limit of detection, which has been found in the ppb range for all sensors, and investigating stability and sensitivity; then, after performing exposures to acetone, ethanol, 2-propanol, sodium hypochlorite, and water vapour, chemometric tools have been exploited to investigate the discrimination capability of the array, including principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and Mahalanobis distance. PCA shows that the array was able to discriminate all the tested gases with an explained variance around 95%, while with an LDA approach the array can be trained to accurately recognize unknown gas contribution, with an accuracy higher than 94%.

Targeting biomarkers in the gas phase through a chemoresistive electronic nose based on graphene functionalized with metal phthalocyanines

Electronic noses (e-noses) have received considerable interest in the past decade as they can match the emerging needs of modern society such as environmental monitoring, health screening, and food quality tracking. For practical applications of e-noses, it is necessary to collect large amounts of data from an array of sensing devices that can detect interactions with molecules reliably and analyze them via pattern recognition. The use of graphene (Gr)-based arrays of chemiresistors in e-noses is still virtually missing, though recent reports on Gr-based chemiresistors have disclosed high sensing performances upon functionalization of the pristine layer, opening up the possibility of being implemented into e-noses. In this work, with the aim of creating a robust and chemically stable interface that combines the chemical properties of metal phthalocyanines (M-Pc, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) with the superior transport properties of Gr, an array of Gr-based chemiresistor sensors functionalized with drop-cast M-Pc thin layers has been developed. The sensing capability of the array was tested towards biomarkers for breathomics application, with a focus on ammonia (NH₃). Exposure to NH₃ has been carried out drawing the calibration curve and estimating the detection limit for all the sensors. The discrimination capability of the array has then been tested, carrying out exposure to several gases (hydrogen sulfide, acetone, ethanol, 2-propanol, water vapour and benzene) and analysing the data through principal component analysis (PCA). The PCA pattern recognition results show that the developed e-nose is able to discriminate all the tested gases through the synergic contribution of all sensors.

π-Orbital mediated charge transfer channels in a monolayer Gr-NiPc heterointerface unveiled by soft X-ray electron spectroscopies and DFT calculations

With the aim to identify charge transfer channels underlying device development and operation, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Near-Edge X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS), and Resonant Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ResPES) have been employed to characterize a novel heterointerface obtained by the controlled evaporation of a Nickel Phthalocyanine (NiPc) monolayer on a single layer of Graphene (Gr) on SiC substrate. Indeed, the Gr-NiPc interface could be a promising candidate for different applications in the field of photonics, optoelectronics, and sensing, provided that clear information on the charge transfer mechanisms at the Gr-NiPc interface can be obtained. The analysis of the spectroscopic data has shown the effective functionalization and the horizontally-flat disposition of the NiPc complexes over the Gr layer. With this geometry, the main intermolecular interaction experienced by the NiPc species is the coupling with the Gr substrate, through π-symmetry orbitals, as revealed by the different behaviour of the valence band photoemission at resonance with the N K-edge and Ni L₃-edge. These results have been supported by the analysis of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, that allowed for a rationalization of the experimental data, showing that charge transfer at the interface occurs from the doubly degenerate e_g LUMO orbital, involving mainly N and C (pyrrole ring) p_z states, to the holes in the p-doped graphene layer.

Exploring the performance of a functionalized CNT-based sensor array for breathomics through clustering and classification algorithms: from gas sensing of selective biomarkers to discrimination of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

An array of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based sensors was produced for sensing selective biomarkers and evaluating breathomics applications with the aid of clustering and classification algorithms. We assessed the sensor array performance in identifying target volatiles and we explored the combination of various classification algorithms to analyse the results obtained from a limited dataset of exhaled breath samples. The sensor array was exposed to ammonia (NH₃), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), and benzene (C₆H₆). Among them, ammonia (NH₃) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) are known biomarkers of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Calibration curves for individual sensors in the array were obtained following exposure to the four target molecules. A remarkable response to ammonia (NH₃) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), according to benchmarking with available data in the literature, was observed. Sensor array responses were analyzed through principal component analysis (PCA), thus assessing the array selectivity and its capability to discriminate the four different target volatile molecules. The sensor array was then exposed to exhaled breath samples from patients affected by COPD and healthy control volunteers. A combination of PCA, supported vector machine (SVM), and linear discrimination analysis (LDA) shows that the sensor array can be trained to accurately discriminate healthy from COPD subjects, in spite of the limited dataset.

Extensive application of clustering and classification algorithms shows the potential of a CNT-based sensor array in breathomics.

Tuning the Ultrafast Response of Fano Resonances in Halide Perovskite Nanoparticles

The full control of the fundamental photophysics of nanosystems at frequencies as high as few THz is key for tunable and ultrafast nanophotonic devices and metamaterials. Here we combine geometrical and ultrafast control of the optical properties of halide perovskite nanoparticles, which constitute a prominent platform for nanophotonics. The pulsed photoinjection of free carriers across the semiconducting gap leads to a subpicosecond modification of the far-field electromagnetic properties that is fully controlled by the geometry of the system. When the nanoparticle size is tuned so as to achieve the overlap between the narrowband excitons and the geometry-controlled Mie resonances, the ultrafast modulation of the transmittivity is completely reversed with respect to what is usually observed in nanoparticles with different sizes, in bulk systems, and in thin films. The interplay between chemical, geometrical, and ultrafast tuning offers an additional control parameter with impact on nanoantennas and ultrafast optical switches.

Ultrafast Carrier Relaxation Dynamics in Quantum Confined Non-Isotropic Silicon Nanostructures Synthesized by an Inductively Coupled Plasma Process

To exploit the optoelectronic properties of silicon nanostructures (SiNS) in real devices, it is fundamental to study the ultrafast processes involving the photogenerated charges separation, migration and lifetime after the optical excitation. Ultrafast time-resolved optical measurements provide such information. In the present paper, we report on the relaxation dynamics of photogenerated charge-carriers in ultrafine SiNS synthesized by means of inductively-coupled-plasma process. The carriers' transient regime was characterized in high fluence regime by using a tunable pump photon energy and a broadband probe pulse with a photon energy ranging from 1.2 eV to 2.8 eV while varying the energy of the pump photons and their polarization. The SiNS consist of Si nanospheres and nanowires (NW) with a crystalline core embedded in a SiO_x outer-shell. The NW inner core presents different typologies: long silicon nanowires (SiNW) characterized by a continuous core (with diameters between 2 nm and 15 nm and up to a few microns long), NW with disconnected fragments of SiNW (each fragment with a length down to a few nanometers), NW with a "chaplet-like" core and NW with core consisting of disconnected spherical Si nanocrystals. Most of these SiNS are asymmetric in shape. Our results reveal a photoabsorption (PA) channel for pump and probe parallel polarizations with a maximum around 2.6 eV, which can be associated to non-isotropic ultra-small SiNS and ascribed either to (i) electron absorption driven by the probe from some intermediate mid-gap states toward some empty state above the bottom of the conduction band or (ii) the Drude-like free-carrier presence induced by the direct-gap transition in the their band structure. Moreover, we pointed up the existence of a broadband and long-living photobleaching (PB) in the 1.2-2.0 eV energy range with a maximum intensity around 1.35 eV which could be associated to some oxygen related defect states present at the Si/SiO_x interface. On the other hand, this wide spectral energy PB can be also due to both silicon oxide band-tail recombination and small Si nanostructure excitonic transition.

Development of a Sensing Array for Human Breath Analysis Based on SWCNT Layers Functionalized with Semiconductor Organic Molecules

A sensor array based on heterojunctions between semiconducting organic layers and single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films is produced to explore applications in breathomics, the molecular analysis of exhaled breath. The array is exposed to gas/volatiles relevant to specific diseases (ammonia, ethanol, acetone, 2-propanol, sodium hypochlorite, benzene, hydrogen sulfide, and nitrogen dioxide). Then, to evaluate its capability to operate with real relevant biological samples the array is exposed to human breath exhaled from healthy subjects. Finally, to provide a proof of concept of its diagnostic potential, the array is exposed to exhaled breath samples collected from subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an airway chronic inflammatory disease not yet investigated with CNT-based sensor arrays, and breathprints are compared with those obtained from of healthy subjects. Principal component analysis shows that the sensor array is able to detect various target gas/volatiles with a clear fingerprint on a 2D subspace, is suitable for breath profiling in exhaled human breath, and is able to distinguish subjects with COPD from healthy subjects based on their breathprints. This classification ability is further improved by selecting the most responsive sensors to nitrogen dioxide, a potential biomarker of COPD.

Impact of covalent functionalization by diazonium chemistry on the electronic properties of graphene on SiC

Plenty of strategies focused on covalent interaction have been developed to functionalize graphene's surface in order to employ it in a wide range of applications. Among them, the use of radical species including nitrene, carbene and aryl diazonium salts is regarded as a promising strategy to establish the covalent functionalization of graphene. In this work, we highlight the effect of diazonium chemistry on the electronic properties of graphene on SiC. On the basis of X-ray and synchrotron-based photoemission experiments, we were able to prove that 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzenediazonium (TMeOD) units, reduced and chemisorbed onto graphene using electrochemistry, preserve the electronic structure of the Dirac cone, through inducing a slightly additional n-type doping of graphene, as revealed by a downshift of the Dirac cone probed by angle-resolved photoemission experiments.

Dramatic efficiency boost of single-walled carbon nanotube-silicon hybrid solar cells through exposure to ppm nitrogen dioxide in air: An ab-initio assessment of the measured device performances

We observed a 73% enhancement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of a photovoltaic cell based on a single wall carbon nanotube/Si hybrid junction after exposing the device to a limited amount (10 ppm) of NO₂ diluted in dry air. On the basis of a computational modeling of the junction, this enhancement is discussed in terms of both carbon nanotube (CNT) p-doping, induced by the interaction with the oxidizing molecules, and work function changes across the junction. Unlike studies so far reported, where the PCE enhancement was correlated only qualitatively to CNT doping, our study (i) provides a novel and reversible path to tune and considerably enhance the cell efficiency by a few ppm gas exposure, and (ii) shows computational results that quantitatively relate the observed effects to the electrostatics of the cell through a systematic calculation of the work function. These effects have been cross-checked by exposing the cell to reducing molecules (i.e·NH₃) that resulted to be detrimental to the cell efficiency, consistently with the theoretical ab-initio calculations.

Enhanced selectivity of target gas molecules through a minimal array of gas sensors based on nanoparticle-decorated SWCNTs

Layers of CNTs decorated with metal and metal–oxide nanoparticles can be used to develop highly selective gas sensor arrays.

Humidity-enhanced sub-ppm sensitivity to ammonia of covalently functionalized single-wall carbon nanotube bundle layers

A low-cost method for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) network production from solutions on flexible polyethylene naphthalate substrates has been adopted to prepare high quality and well characterized SWCNT bundle layers to be used as the active layer in chemiresistor gas sensors. Two types of SWCNTs have been tested: pristine SWCNTs, deposited from a surfactant solution, and covalently functionalized SWCNTs, deposited from a dimethyl-acetamide solution. The humidity effects on the sensitivity of the SWCNTs network to NH₃ have been investigated. The results show that relative humidity favors the response to NH₃, confirming recent theoretical predictions. The COOH-functionalized sample displays the largest response owing to both its hydrophilic nature, favoring the interaction with H₂O molecules, and its largest surface area. Compared to data available in the literature, the present sensors display a remarkable sensitivity well below the ppm range, which makes them quite promising for environmental and medical applications, where NH₃ concentrations (mostly of the order of tens of ppb) have to be detected.

Hybridized C-O-Si Interface States at the Origin of Efficiency Improvement in CNT/Si Solar Cells

Despite the astonishing values of the power conversion efficiency reached, in just less than a decade, by the carbon nanotube/silicon (CNT/Si) solar cells, many doubts remain on the underlying transport mechanisms across the CNT/Si heterojunction. Here, by combining transient optical spectroscopy in the femtosecond timescale, X-ray photoemission, and a systematic tracking of I-V curves across all phases of the interlayer SiO_x growth at the interface, we grasp the mechanism that adequately preserves charge separation at the junction, hindering the photoexcited carrier recombination. Moreover, supported by ab initio calculations aimed to model the complex CNT-Si heterointerface, we show that oxygen-related states at the interface act as entrapping centers for the photoexcited electrons, thus preventing recombination with holes that can flow from Si to CNT across the SiO_x layer.

A cross-functional nanostructured platform based on carbon nanotube-Si hybrid junctions: where photon harvesting meets gas sensing

A combination of the functionalities of carbon nanotube (CNT)-Si hybrid heterojunctions is presented as a novel method to steer the efficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) cell based on these junctions, and to increase the selectivity and sensitivity of the chemiresistor gas sensor operated with the p-doped CNT layer. The electrical characteristics of the junctions have been tracked by exposing the devices to oxidizing (NO2) and reducing (NH3) molecules. It is shown that when used as PV cells, the cell efficiency can be reversibly steered by gas adsorption, providing a tool to selectively dope the p-type layer through molecular adsorption. Tracking of the current-voltage curve upon gas exposure also allowed to use these cells as gas sensors with an enhanced sensitivity as compared to that provided by a readout of the electrical signal from the CNT layer alone. In turn, the chemiresistive response was improved, both in terms of selectivity and sensitivity, by operating the system under illumination, as the photo-induced charges at the junction increase the p-doping of CNTs making them more sensitive to NH3 and less to NO2.

Gas sensing at the nanoscale: engineering SWCNT-ITO nano-heterojunctions for the selective detection of NH3 and NO2 target molecules

The gas response of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) functionalized with indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles (NP) has been studied at room temperature and an enhanced sensitivity to ammonia and nitrogen dioxide is demonstrated. The higher sensitivity in the functionalized sample is related to the creation of nano-heterojunctions at the interface between SWCNT bundles and ITO NP. Furthermore, the different response of the two devices upon NO₂ exposure provides a way to enhance also the selectivity. This behavior is rationalized by considering a gas sensing mechanism based on the build-up of space-charge layers at the junctions. Finally, full recovery of the signal after exposure to NO₂ is achieved by UV irradiation for the functionalized sample, where the ITO NP can play a role to hinder the poisoning effects on SWCNT due to NO₂ chemisorption.

Ultrafast dynamics in unaligned MWCNTs decorated with metal nanoparticles

The relaxation dynamics of unaligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes decorated with metallic nanoparticles have been studied by using transient optical measurements. The fast dynamics due to the short-lived free-charge carriers excited by the pump are not affected by the presence of nanoparticles. Conversely, a second long dynamics, absent in bare carbon nanotubes, appears only in the decorated samples. A combination of experiment and theory allows us to ascribe this long dynamics to relaxation channels involving electronic states localized at the tube-nanoparticle interface.

Growth of hybrid carbon nanostructures on iron-decorated ZnO nanorods

A novel carbon-based nanostructured material, which includes carbon nanotubes (CNTs), porous carbon, nanostructured ZnO and Fe nanoparticles, has been synthetized using catalytic chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of acetylene on vertically aligned ZnO nanorods (NRs). The deposition of Fe before the CVD process induces the presence of dense CNTs in addition to the variety of nanostructures already observed on the process done on the bare NRs, which range from amorphous graphitic carbon up to nanostructured dendritic carbon films, where the NRs are partially or completely etched. The combination of scanning electron microscopy and in situ photoemission spectroscopy indicate that Fe enhances the ZnO etching, and that the CNT synthesis is favoured by the reduced Fe mobility due to the strong interaction between Fe and the NRs, and to the presence of many defects, formed during the CVD process. Our results demonstrate that the resulting new hybrid shows a higher sensitivity to ammonia gas at ambient conditions (∼60 ppb) than the carbon nanostructures obtained without the aid of Fe, the bare ZnO NRs, or other one-dimensional carbon nanostructures, making this system of potential interest for environmental ammonia monitoring. Finally, in view of the possible application in nanoscale optoelectronics, the photoexcited carrier behaviour in these hybrid systems has been characterized by time-resolved reflectivity measurements.

Role of the Substrate Orientation in the Photoinduced Electron Dynamics at the Porphyrin/Ag Interface

Photochemically activated reactions, despite being a powerful tool to covalently stabilize self-organized molecular structures on metallic surfaces, have struggled to take off due to several not yet well understood light-driven processes that can affect the final result. A thorough understanding of the photoinduced charge transfer mechanisms at the organic/metal interface would pave the way to controlling these processes and to developing on-surface photochemistry. Here, by time-resolved two-photon photoemission measurements, we track the relaxation processes of the first two excited molecular states at the interface between porphyrin, the essential chromophore in chlorophyll, and two different orientations of the silver surface. Due to the energy alignment of the porphyrin first excited state with the unoccupied sp-bands, an indirect charge transfer path, from the substrate to the molecule, opens in porphyrin/Ag(100) 250 fs after the laser pump excitation. The same time-resolved measurements carried out on porphyrin/Ag(111) show that in the latter case such an indirect path is not viable.

Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling in Image Potential States

The search in two-dimensional condensed matter systems of Rashba-type spin-polarized electronic states is aimed by the possibility to control and manipulate the spin orientation. In this Letter, for the first time, we report on the experimental evidence of a Rashba-type spin splitting in the n=1 image potential state. The image potential state Rashba splitting here measured at the graphene/Ir(111) interface, as confirmed by theoretical considerations, can be detectable to any metal surface with a significant spin-orbit coupling.

Steering the efficiency of carbon nanotube-silicon photovoltaic cells by acid vapor exposure: a real-time spectroscopic tracking

Hybrid carbon nanotube-silicon (CNT-Si) junctions have been investigated by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (AR-XPS) with the aim to clarify the effects of a nonstoichiometric silicon oxide buried interface on the overall cell efficiency. A complex silicon oxide interface has been clearly identified and its origin and role in the heterojunction have been probed by exposing the cells to hydrofluoric (HF) and nitric (HNO3) acid. Real-time monitoring of the cell efficiencies during the steps following acid exposure (up to 1 week after etching) revealed a correlation between the thickness and chemical state of the oxide layer and the cell efficiencies. By matching the AR-XPS and Raman spectroscopy with the electrical response data it has been possible to discriminate the effects on the cell efficiency of the buried SiO(x) interface from those related to CNT acid doping. The overall cell behavior recorded for different thicknesses of the SiO(x) interface indicates that the buried oxide layer is likely acting as a passivating/inversion layer in a metal-insulator-semiconductor junction.

A label-free microfluidic assay to quantitatively study antibiotic diffusion through lipid membranes

With the rise in antibiotic resistance amongst pathogenic bacteria, the study of antibiotic activity and transport across cell membranes is gaining widespread importance. We present a novel, label-free microfluidic assay that quantifies the permeability coefficient of a broad spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, norfloxacin, across lipid membranes using the UV autofluorescence of the drug. We use giant lipid vesicles as highly controlled model systems to study the diffusion through lipid membranes. Our technique directly determines the permeability coefficient without requiring the measurement of the partition coefficient of the antibiotic.

Tracking the excitation dynamics in the Mn:Ge(111) metallic interface by resonant electron spectroscopy

Resonant photoemission from the valence band of a (√3 × √3)R30° reconstructed Mn:Ge(111) metallic interface has been carefully analyzed with the aim to track the transition from resonant Raman to normal Auger emission. The transition energy has been compared with the Mn 2p binding energy, as well as with the Mn L(3) absorption edge energy. Close similarities emerge with respect to the case of elemental Mn thin films, suggesting that the excitation dynamics is dominated by the electronic properties of Mn 3d states, in spite of the bonding with Ge atoms. The switching from the resonant Raman Auger (RRAS) to the normal Auger regime is found about 2 eV below the Mn L(3) absorption edge. A change of the lineshape due to the transition from an overall N - 1 electron final state (RRAS channel) to an N - 2 electron final state (normal Auger channel) is evidenced by the analysis of the experimental data, which also allowed the ratio to be tracked between charge delocalization and core-hole time scales as the photon energy is tuned across the Mn L(3) edge.

Electronic excitations in synthetic eumelanin aggregates probed by soft X-ray spectroscopies

Electronic excitations of condensed phase eumelanin aggregates are investigated with soft X-ray spectroscopies. Resonant photoemission data indicate that mechanisms of charge delocalization may occur when electrons are excited about 3 eV above the first unoccupied electronic level. An average, lower limit value of 1.6 fs was estimated for the lifetime of the excited C 1s-pi* states.

Electronic properties of a pure and sodium-doped C70 single layer adsorbed on Al polycrystalline surface

Core level and valence band photoemission measurements combined with near edge x-ray absorption fine structure measurements were performed on a single C(70) layer adsorbed on polycrystalline Al (1 ML-C(70)/Al) (ML-monolayer), pure and doped with sodium atoms. The data obtained from the pure ML chemisorbed on Al surface show a semiconducting behavior of the system, which is characterized by a covalent bond between the adsorbate and the substrate. The same data show also that the C(70) molecules tend to orient themselves with the C(5v) axis perpendicular to the surface in analogy to what observed for 1 ML-C(70)/Cu(111). By doping the sample with sodium atoms a charge transfer from the alkali atoms to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the C(70) molecules takes place, as underlined by the gradual increasing intensity of the C(70) LUMO peak as a function of doping. Nevertheless, no metallic phases are observed for any doping step.

Experimental evidence of above-threshold photoemission in solids

Nonlinear photoemission from a silver single crystal is investigated by femtosecond laser pulses in a perturbative regime. A clear observation of above-threshold photoemission in solids is reported for the first time. The ratio between the three-photon above-threshold and the two-photon Fermi edges is found to be 10(-4). This value constitutes the only available benchmark for theories aimed at understanding the mechanism responsible for above-threshold photoemission in solids.

Violation of the electric-dipole selection rules in indirect multiphoton excitation of image-potential states on Ag(100)

Photoemission from image potential states on Ag(100) is investigated using angle resolved multiphoton photoemission induced by 150 fs laser pulses. For the first time we demonstrate that image potential states populated by indirect transitions can be observed with light polarized parallel to the plane of incidence and light polarized normal to the plane of incidence. The latter is a process normally forbidden by the dipole transition selection rules. These findings are related to the creation of a hot-electron population whose properties largely remains to be understood.

Core level photoemission evidence of frustrated surface molecules: a germ of disorder at the (111) surface of C60 before the order-disorder surface phase transition

Using high resolution core level photoemission, we investigated the disordering transition of the fullerene molecules at the (111) surface of C (60) films. The experimental evidence of a two-step mechanism for the rotational disordering of surface fullerene molecules is provided. The data are consistent with a recent model in which the rotational degrees of freedom of one molecule, out of the four inequivalent C (60) molecules of the low temperature (2x2) surface unit cell, melt about 100 K before the bulk phase transition.

[Widespread endemic goiter and iodine deficiency in the province of Avellino]

1352 schoolchildren between 6-14 years old (699 males and 653 females) and 943 adults (176 males and 767 females) from eight villages of the province of Avellino were studied. All subjects were examined for thyroid size by at least two expert examiners. In most of them urine samples were collected for iodine determinations. 387 schoolchildren and 161 adults from Flumeri and Villanova were evaluated by thyroid echography. The prevalence of goiter was from 23.5 to 52.2% and the median urinary iodine excretion was from 42.3 to 66.2 micrograms/l in schoolchildren. In adults the prevalence of goiter was from 41.2 to 86.7% and the median urinary iodine excretion was from 37.1 to 53.7 micrograms/l. Our data showed a degree of iodine deficiency from low to moderate. The echography permitted to point out a greater prevalence of nodules than the thyroid palpation.

Hyperthyroidism and Addison's disease in a patient with myotonic dystrophy

A 53-year-old man had myotonic dystrophy, hyperthyroidism, and Addison's disease, an association not previously reported, to our knowledge. In the literature, at least five cases of hyperthyroidism associated with myotonic dystrophy have been described, but none also had Addison's disease. The presence of thyroid anti-microsomal antibodies and anti-adrenal antibodies suggests that the two endocrine disorders may be autoimmune. In our case, the treatment of the two endocrinopathies caused a reduction of myotonic symptoms.
