Abstract
Abstract
Background
Oxidative damage in the brain may lead to cognitive impairments. There was considerable debate regarding the beneficial effects of physical exercise on cognitive functions because exercise protocols have varied widely across studies.
Purpose
We investigated whether different exercise intensities alter performance on cognitive tasks.
Methods
The experiment was performed on spontaneously hypertensive rats (6 months at the established phase of hypertension) distributed into 3 groups: sedentary, low-intensity exercise, and high-intensity exercise.
Results
Systolic blood pressure measurements confirmed hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats. In comparison to normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats, sedentary spontaneously hypertensive rats had similar escape latencies and a similar preference for the correct quadrant in the probe trial. Compared to the sedentary group, the low-intensity exercise group had significantly better improvements in spatial memory assessed by Morris water maze. Low-intensity exercise was associated with attenuated reactive oxygen species, as measured by dihydroethidine fluorescence and nitrotyrosine staining in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. This was coupled with increased numbers of neurons and dendritic spines as well as a significant upregulation of synaptic density. In contrast, the beneficial effects of low-intensity exercise are abolished in high-intensity exercise as shown by increased free radical levels and an impairment in spatial memory.
Conclusions
We concluded that exercise is an effective strategy to improve spatial memory in spontaneously hypertensive rats even at an established phase of hypertension. Low-intensity exercise exhibited better improvement on cognitive deficits than high-intensity exercise by attenuating free radical levels and improving downstream synaptic plasticity.

Abstract
Shade tolerance, the minimum light requirement for plant survival, is a key trait for understanding community assembly and forest dynamics. However, it is poorly defined for tree species to date. Current methods of measuring shade tolerance vary considerably in their performance. For instance, some measures of shade tolerance are unreliable except under some specific conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to compare the performance of these methods to provide guidance of choosing appropriate shade tolerance measures in future studies. We collected a large dataset of light traits and other life history traits for 137 understory wood species in a subtropical forest and tested the performance of five commonly used shade-tolerance indices. Results showed that all the shade-tolerance measures, except the low-light abundance index, performed poorly in distinguishing and ranking shade tolerance of the tested species. The shade tolerance quantified by the low-light abundance was consistent with empirical classification of shade-tolerance/intolerance groups and successional seral stages of species. Comparison of the shade tolerance between trees of different diameter at breast height (DBH) or height classes further confirmed the reliability of low-light abundance. We conclude that low-light abundance is the most objective and practical of the five most commonly-used methods for measuring and ranking shade tolerance of understory wood species in our study forest, and likely in other forests as well. The simplicity of the method should greatly facilitate the assessment of light niche differentiation between species and thus contribute to understanding coexistence of tree species in forests.

Abstract
For dental orthodontic applications, NiTi wires are used under bending conditions in the oral environment for a long period. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of bending stress on the corrosion of NiTi wires using potentiodynamic and potentiostatic tests in artificial saliva. The results indicated that bending stress induces a higher corrosion rate of NiTi wires in passive regions. It is suggested that the passive oxide film of specimens would be damaged under bending conditions. Auger electron spectroscopic analysis showed a lower thickness of passive films on stressed NiTi wires compared with unstressed specimens in the passive region. By scanning electron microscopy, localized corrosion was observed on stressed Sentalloy specimens after a potentiodynamic test at pH 2. In conclusion, this study indicated that bending stress changed the corrosion properties and surface characteristics of NiTi wires in a simulated intra-oral environment.

Abstract
High pulmonary vascular resistance index (PVRI) can lead to right ventricular dysfunction and failure of the donor heart early after pediatric heart transplantation. Oral pulmonary vasodilators such as sildenafil have been shown to be effective modifiers of pulmonary vascular tone. We performed a retrospective, observational study comparing patients treated with sildenafil ("sildenafil group") to those not treated with sildenafil ("nonsildenafil group") after heart transplantation from 2007 to 2012. Pre- and posttransplant data were obtained, including hemodynamic data from right heart catheterizations. Twenty-four of 97 (25%) transplant recipients were transitioned to sildenafil from other systemic vasodilators. Pretransplant PVRI was higher in the sildenafil group (6.8 ± 3.9 indexed Woods units [WU]) as compared to the nonsildenafil group (2.5 ± 1.7 WU, p=0.002). In the sildenafil group posttransplant, there were significant decreases in systolic pulmonary artery pressure, mean pulmonary artery pressure, transpulmonary gradient and PVRI (4.7 ± 2.9 WU before sildenafil initiation to 2.7 ± 1 WU on sildenafil, p=0.0007). While intubation time, length of inotrope use and time to hospital discharge were longer in the sildenafil group, survival was similar between both groups. Oral sildenafil was associated with a significant improvement in right ventricular dysfunction and invasive hemodynamic measurements in pediatric heart transplant recipients with high PVRI early after transplant.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation among adolescents is epidemic. We argue that this sleep deprivation is due in part to pubertal changes in the homeostatic and circadian regulation of sleep. These changes promote a delayed sleep phase that is exacerbated by evening light exposure and incompatible with aspects of modern society, notably early school start times. In this review of human and animal literature, we demonstrate that delayed sleep phase during puberty is likely a common phenomenon in mammals, not specific to human adolescents, and we provide insight into the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon.

Abstract
Passivation treatments of titanium alloy alter not only its nanosurface characteristics of oxides and ion release but also surface roughness (Ra), and wettability as well, where nanosurface characteristics of oxides include chemistries of oxides, amphoteric-OH groups adsorbed on oxides, and oxide thickness. Consequently, the passivation treatment affects the alloy's cyto-comparability. In this study, we polish specimens to achieve nanometric scale roughness. In addition, treatment effects are evaluated for surface topology, roughness, wettability, and responses of fibroblasts consisting of MTT assay, initial adhesion strength, and morphology. The initial adhesion strength is measured using a cyto-detacher that achieves nano-Newton resolution. Results reveal that (1) the treatment effects on the percentage of Ti--OH basic groups and wettability are nearly collinear; (2) the Ra of passivated Ti-6Al-4V ranges from 1.9 to 7.4 nm; (3) the initial adhesion strength of fibroblast ranges from 58 to 143 nN, and it is negatively correlated to the Ra; (4) the passivation results in distinguishable morphologies, which further substantiate the negative correlation between cell initial adhesion force and Ra; and (5) our results fall short of confirming previous reports that found positively charged functional groups promoting fibroblast attachment and spread. Potential causes of the inconsistency are addressed.

Abstract
Titanium alloys (Ti6Al4V), while subjected to high temperature surface treatment, experience altered nano-surface characteristics. The effects of such surface treatments are examined, including the initial adhesion force experienced by osteoblasts, the Ca/P adsorption capability, and the nano-surface properties, including the amounts of amphoteric Ti-OH groups, surface topography, and surface roughness. The initial adhesion force is considered a quantitative indicator of cyto-compatibility in vitro. Previously, a cyto-detacher was applied in a pioneer attempt measuring the initial adhesion force of fibroblasts on a metal surface. Presently, the cyto-detacher is further applied to evaluate the initial adhesion force of osteoblasts. Results reveal that (1) titanium alloys subjected to heat treatment could promote the adsorption capability of Ca and P; (2) titanium alloys subjected to heat treatment could have higher initial osteoblast adhesion forces; (3) the adhesion strength of osteoblasts, ranging from 38.5 to 58.9 nN (nanonewtons), appears stronger for rougher surfaces. It is concluded that the heat treatment could have impacted the biocompatibility in terms of the initial osteoblast adhesion force and Ca/P adsorption capability.

Abstract
A porous metal coating applied to solid substrate implants has been shown, in vivo, to anchor implants by bone ingrowth. Calcium phosphate ceramics, in particular hydroxyapatite [Ca(10)(PO(4))(6)(OH)(2), HA], are bioactive ceramics, which are known to be biocompatible and osteoconductive, and these ceramics deposited on to porous-coated devices may enhance bone ingrowth and implant fixation. In this study, bi-feedstock of the titanium powder and composite (Na(2)CO(3)/HA) powder were simultaneously deposited on a Ti-6Al-4V substrate by a plasma sprayed method. At high temperature of plasma torch, the solid state of Na(2)CO(3) would decompose to release CO(2) gas and then eject the molten Ti powder to induce the interconnected pores in the coatings. After cleaning and soaking in deionized water, the residual Na(2)CO(3) in the coating would dissolve to form the open pores, and the HA would exist at the surface of pores in the inner coatings. By varying the particle size of the composite powder, the porosity of porous coating could be varied from 25.0 to 34.0%, and the average pore size of the porous coating could be varied to range between 158.5 and 202.0 microm. Using a standard adhesive test (ASTM C-633), the bonding strength of the coating is between 27.3 and 38.2 MPa. By SEM, the HA was observed at the surface of inner pore in the porous coating. These results suggest that the method exhibits the potential to manufacture the bioactive ceramics on to porous-coated specimen to achieve bone ingrowth fixation for biomedical applications.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of post-hydrothermal treatment on the biological responses of the plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated Ti-6Al-4V implant system both in vitro and in vivo. After hydrothermal treatment, the HA coating (HAC) shows the high mechanical strength and indices-of-crystallinity, denser microstructure, lower concentrations of amorphous and impurity phases, when compared with the as-sprayed HAC. The in vitro cell-culture studies, using UMR106 osteoblast-like cell, demonstrated no signifiacnt cell growth on both surface of as-sprayed and hydrothermal-treated HACs during 10-day culture. The in vivo studies, using the transcortical implant model in the femora of goats, evaluated the histological responses of two coatings. After 6 week of implantation, using backscattered electron images, no substantial histological variations in the extents of new bone apposition and new bone healing between the two HACs were observed. However, the as-sprayed HAC, owing to the dissolution induced the granular particles dissociated from the HAC, showed the statically lower extent of new bone apposition than hydrothermal-treated HAC at 12 weeks. The results suggest that hydrothermal treatment could be used to improve the mechanical strength, crystallinity, and phase composition of HAC, which are important factors of long-term fixation and stability of implant. Besides, the treated HAC could also achieve the initial fixation of implant in clinical use.

Abstract
Evidence suggests that exposure to excess steroids during critical periods of fetal development leads to reproductive disorders. Exposure of female lambs to excess testosterone (T) from Days 60 to 90 of gestation (T60-90; term, 147 days) delayed onset of the LH surge and resulted in to male-typical reproductive behavior. The objectives of this study were to test the ability of T60-90 ewes to mate, conceive and lamb during the first three breeding seasons (Years 1, 2 and 3). Pregnant Suffolk ewes were injected with T propionate in cottonseed oil (100mg, im twice weekly) or vehicle (control; C) from Days 60 to 90 of gestation. In Year 1, ewes (C=12, T60-90=12) were kept with a vasectomized ram for 3 months and markings/visual observation of copulations were recorded. Rams had paint applied to their chest to facilitate detection of estrus and mating. All C but only three T60-90 ewes were marked (P<0.001). All ewes were then estrus-synchronized with two injections of prostaglandin F2alpha (20mg, im) given 11 days apart and allowed to mate with a painted, fertile ram. Nine of 12 C and 4 of 12 T60-90 ewes (P=0.1) were mated. Based on estrus and long-term monitoring of progesterone, more C than T60-90 became pregnant (82 and 18%, respectively; P<0.01). In Year 2, to maximize ram exposure, two C and two T60-90 estrus-synchronized ewes were placed with a painted, fertile ram at a time and mated ewes were removed to a nearby pen to force mating with others. Twenty-four hour video monitoring revealed the rams mated more C than T60-90 ewes (83 and 25%, respectively; P=0.01). In both Years 1 and 2, the rams preferred C over T60-90 ewes; therefore in Year 3 rams were given access only to T60-90 ewes. Only four T60-90 estrus-synchronized ewes were placed with a painted ram at a time. Not given an option, 91% of the T60-90 ewes were marked resulting in 4 of 11 (36%; first-service pregnancy rate in the breeding herd was 91%) ewes becoming pregnant to the synchronized estrus. Collectively these studies showed that fertility in T60-90 females was severely compromised, even after overcoming ram preference for controls.

Abstract
The microstructural evolution and electrochemical characteristics of brazed porous-coated Ti-6Al-4V alloy were analyzed and compared with respect to the conventionally 1300 degrees C sintering method. The titanium filler metal of low-melting-point (934 degrees C) Ti-15Cu-15Ni was used to braze commercially pure (CP) titanium beads onto the substrate of Ti-6Al-4V alloy at 970 degrees C for 2 and 8 h. Optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) were used to characterize the microstructure and phase of the brazed metal; also, the potentiostat was used for corrosion study. Experimental results indicate that the bead/substrate contact interface of the 970 degrees C brazed specimens show larger contact area and higher radius curvature in comparison with 1300 degrees C sintering method. The microstructure of brazed specimens shows the Widmanstätten structure in the brazed zone and equiaxed alpha plus intergranular beta in the Ti-6Al-4V substrate. The intermetallic Ti2Ni phase existing in the prior filler metal diminishes, while the Ti2Cu phase can be identified for the substrate at 970 for 2 h, but the latter phase decrease with time. In Hank's solution at 37 degrees C, the corrosion rates of the 1300 degrees C sintering and the 970 degrees C brazed samples are similar at corrosion potential (E(corr)) in potentiodynamic test, and the value of E(corr) for the brazed sample is noble to the sintering samples. The current densities of the brazed specimens do not exceed 100 microA/cm2 at 3.5 V (SCE). These results suggest that the vacuum-brazed method exhibits the potentiality to manufacture the porous-coated specimens for biomedical application.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of passivation treatment (34% nitric acid passivation, 400 ( composite function)C heated in air, and aged in 100 ( composite function)C de-ionized water) and surface modification (2 hr and 8 hr vacuum-brazed treatments) on the ion dissolution and nano-surface characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V exposed in Hank's solution with 8.0 mM ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) at 37 ( composite function)C. The results indicated that the original nano-surface characteristics and microstructure would influence the ion dissolution but not change the capability of the Ca and P adsorption upon immersion. Of the three passivated treatments, 400 ( composite function)C thermal treatment for both 2 hr brazed Ti-6Al-4V (B2) and 8 hr brazed Ti-6Al-4V (B8) exhibits a substantial reduction in the constituent release compared to the acid passivated and water aged treatment, because the thicker thickness and rutile structure of surface oxide could provide the better dissolution resistance for 400 ( composite function)C-treated specimens. Moreover, the reduced Ti(2)Cu and increased alpha -titanium structure in B8 specimen could also improve ion dissolution resistance in comparison with B2 specimen. After soaking in Hank/EDTA solution, the adsorbed non-elemental Ca and P for all groups of specimens were observed by XPS analysis, and the AES depth-profile analysis indicate that the oxide films of all groups of specimens thicken with the longer immersion periods. The increasing oxide thickness may be the factor in the improved dissolution resistance at the longer immersion periods. The relation between lower dissolution rate and thicker oxide films were observed for all groups of specimens. The results suggest that the dissolution kinetics was governed by the metal ion transport through the oxide film in this study.

Abstract
Clinic blood pressure (CBP) is generally used for diagnosis and treatment monitoring in hypertension, but target organ damage correlates more closely with home blood pressure (HBP). Eliminating the clinic-home blood pressure difference (CHBPD) would make conventional CBP a more accurate alternative to HBP. This prospective, randomized, open trial compared the effect of a once-daily versus a twice-daily regimen of anti-hypertensive therapy on CHBPD. After a 2-week wash-out period, 85 confirmed stage 1 hypertensive patients were randomized to receive 2 mg trichlormethiazide daily in one (40 subjects) or two (45 subjects) daily doses for 3 weeks. CBP and HBP measurements were taken during the third week of treatment and the CHBPD calculated. After treatment, the systolic and diastolic CHBPD values were significantly greater in the once-daily regimen than in the twice-daily regimen. Conventional CBP should not be used as an alternative to HBP for evaluating prognosis and monitoring anti-hypertensive therapy when using a once-daily regimen.

Abstract
Prolonged exposure to stress and the resulting over-stimulation of the HPA system are often detrimental to the homeostasis of an organism. In fact, chronic stress is believed to affect the pathology of several disease states including coronary heart disease and hypertension, diabetes and obesity. In humans, mutations in the GLC1A gene have been associated with primary open angle glaucoma. Previous studies on this gene have suggested that its expression is also affected by the same factors that mediate the stress response. With the ultimate goal of using the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, as an invertebrate model for glaucoma, we have measured the stress responsiveness of the cof-2 gene, one of two C. elegans proteins with significant homology to the myocilin olfactomedin domain. We show that both cof-2 mRNA and protein expression are developmentally regulated and that both are affected by heat shock stress.

Abstract
The clinical use of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on metal implants has been widely adopted because the HA coating can achieve the firmly and directly biological fixation with the surrounding bone tissue. However, the long-term mechanical properties of HA coatings has been concern for the long-term clinical application. Previous research showed that the concept of adding ZrO2 as second phase to HA significantly increased the bonding strength of plasma-sprayed composite material. The present work aimed to explore the biological properties, including the histological responses and shear strength, between the plasma-sprayed HA and HA/ZrO2 coating, using the transcortical implant model in the femora of canines. After 6 and 12 weeks of implantation, the HA coating revealed the direct bone-to-coating contact by the backscattered electron images (BEIs) of scanning electron microscope (SEM), but the osseointegration was not observed at the surface of HA/ZrO2 coating. For new bone healing index (NBHI) and apposition index (AI), the values for HA implants were significantly higher than that for HA/ZrO2 coatings throughout all implant periods. After push-out test, the shear strength of HA-coated implants were statistically higher than HA/ZrO2 coated implants at 6- and 12-week implantation, and the failure mode of HA/ZrO2 coating was observed at the coating-bone interface by SEM. The results indicate that the firm fixation between bone and HA/ZrO2 has not been achieved even after 12-week implantation. Consequently, the addition of ZrO2 could improve the mechanical properties of coatings, while the biocompatibility was influenced by the different material characteristics of HA/ZrO2 coating compared to HA coatings.

Abstract
This study examined the cell attachment and proliferation of neonatal rat calvarial osteoblasts on Ti6Al4V alloy as affected by the surface modifications. The modifications could alter simultaneously the surface chemistries of the alloy (elemental difference of Ti, Al, V, Cu and Ni about 300-600mum thick examined by EDS) as well as the XPS nano-surface characteristics of oxides on the metal surface (chemistries of oxides, amphoteric OH group adsorbed on oxides, and oxide thickness). Three materials including two from modifications and a control were examined. It is argued that a slight change of the nano-surface characteristics of oxides as a result of the modifications neither alters the in vitro capability of Ca and P ion adsorption nor affects the metal ion dissolution behavior of the alloy. This implies that any influence on the cytocompatibility of the materials should only be correlated to the effect of surface chemistries of the alloy and the associated metal ion dissolution behavior of the alloy. The experimental results suggest that the cell response of neonatal rat calvarial osteoblasts on the Ti6Al4V alloy should neither be affected by the variation of surface chemistries of the alloy in a range studied.

Abstract
This study examined the influence of chemistries and surface characteristics of Ti6Al4V on the adsorption of Ca and P species and ion dissolution behavior of the material exposed in Hank's solution with 8.0 mM ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid at 37 degrees C. The variation of chemistries of the alloy and nano-surface characteristics (chemistries of nano-surface oxides, amphoteric OH group adsorbed on oxides, and oxide thickness) was effected by surface modification and three passivation methods (34% nitric acid passivation. 400 degrees C heated in air, and aged in 100 degrees C water). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy were used for surface analyses. The chemistries of nano-surface oxides in a range studied should not change the capability of Ca and P adsorption. Nor is the capability affected significantly by amphoteric OH group and oxide thickness. However, passivations influence the surface oxide thickness and the early stage ion dissolution rate of the alloy. The rate-limiting step of the rate can be best explained by metal-ion transport through the oxide film, rather than hydrolysis of the film. Variation of the chemistries of titanium alloy alters the electromotive force potential of the metal, thereby affecting the corrosion and ion dissolution rate.

Abstract
Paternal and nonpaternal voles (microtus) have different arginine-vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OT) receptor patterns in the extended amygdala, a neural pathway associated with parental behavior. Using receptor autoradiography, the authors examined whether AVP and OT receptor patterns were associated with facultative paternal behavior in either sexually and parentally inexperienced or experienced meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus). Experienced, in contrast to inexperienced, males had less AVP binding in the lateral septum (LS), more AVP binding in the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON), and more OT binding in the AON, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, LS, and lateral amygdala. Thus, specific AVP receptor patterns, which co-occur with paternal care in consistently paternal voles, also may be associated with paternal care (when present) in typically nonpaternal species. This study also demonstrated a possible relationship between OT receptor patterns and paternal state in male mammals.

Abstract
The efficacy and safety profiles of barnidipine in the treatment of hypertension were evaluated in an open parallel-group study. Fifty-nine Chinese patients with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension were randomized to receive either barnidipine or felodipine (5 mg once daily, titrated to 10 mg or 15 mg once daily, as indicated) for 12 weeks. Both drugs reduced blood pressures significantly with > or = 68% of cases obtaining marked or moderate blood pressure reduction. Mean reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure for barnidipine treatment were 23.7 +/- 13.5 mmHg and 12.7 +/- 7.9 mmHg, and for felodipine, 24.3 +/- 18.4 mmHg and 14.5 +/- 10.0 mmHg, respectively. There was no significant difference between these two drugs in anti-hypertensive effect, heart rate, laboratory measurements or incidence of adverse events. The only difference was that more patients taking felodipine experienced palpitations. We conclude that barnidipine has similar efficacy and a similar safety profile to felodipine in the treatment of mild-to-moderate essential hypertension in Chinese patients.

Abstract
The biocompatibility of material plays an important role in the bone-implant interface for the prosthetic implant fixation. The biocompatibility of implants is associated with the chemical composition, surface topography, surface energy and surface roughness of biomaterials. The effects of two factors, surface roughness and serum contents, on osteoblast behavior at the surface of Ti-6Al-4V and plasma sprayed HA coating were investigated in the experiment. The osteoblasts derived from neonatal rat calvarial were cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM) with fetal bovine serum (FBS) on the surface of polished Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-p), grit-blasted Ti-6Al-4V (Ti-b), polished HA coating (HAC-p), and as-sprayed HA coating (HAC). Under culture medium containing 4% FBS, the level of cell attachment to the polished surface is significantly higher than the rough surface of the same experimental materials during all culture periods. Increasing the contents of FBS up to 10%, the difference of osteoblast attachment is not found between Ti-p and Ti-b. Under 4% serum condition, the cell morphology attached to smooth surfaces (Ti-p and HAC-p) is spread faster and are more flattened than the one to rough surface of the same experimental materials by SEM. After 24 h culture, the corroded cracks are easily observed at the surface of polished HA coatings, and the cell morphology on HAC-p coatings are elongated and less flattened compared with Ti-p. The result is consistent with statistical difference of cell attachment between Ti-p and HAC-p under 4% serum condition.

Abstract
Plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) coating, applied to metal substrates, can induce a direct chemical bond with bone and hence achieve a biological fixation of the implant. However, the poor bonding strength between the HA coating and the substrate has been a concern for the orthopedists. In a previous study, the zirconia-reinforced hydroxyapatite composite coatings (HA/ZrO(2)) could significantly improve the mechanical strength before and after soaking in simulated body fluid. This study aims to investigate the biological responses of osteoblasts on plasma-sprayed HA/ZrO(2) coating. The osteoblasts derived from neonatal rat calvarial were cultured in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM) with fetal bovine serum (FBS) on the surface of plasma-sprayed HA coating, HA/ZrO(2) coating, and ZrO(2) coating, respectively. The biological responses were investigated by the cell growth (1, 3, 5, and 10 days) and the cell morphology under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) (3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h). Examination by SEM revealed that osteoblasts on HA coatings exhibit less spreading during the medium phase (6 and 12 h), while, better morphologies were observed at the latter phases (24 and 48 h). This should be derived by the dissolution of HA coating in the culture medium. On HA/ZrO(2) coating, the cells showed the poor morphologies at the latter phases (24 and 48 h). This could be explained by the no apatite formed at the surface HA/ZrO(2) coating after soaking in simulated body fluid. The lower contents of ZrO(2) coating in HA coating and the addition of other solid solution (ZrO(2)-MgO, CaO-ZrO(2), ZrO(2)-CeO(2)) in HA coating are the two possible methods to improve the cytocompatibility of HA/ZrO(2) coating.

Abstract
A dual oscillator basis for mammalian circadian rhythms is suggested by the splitting of activity rhythms into two components in constant light and by the photoperiodic control of pineal melatonin secretion and phase-resetting effects of light. Because splitting and photoperiodism depend on incompatible environmental conditions, however, these literatures have remained distinct. The refinement of a procedure for splitting hamster rhythms in a 24-h light-dark:light-dark cycle has enabled the authors to assess the ability of each of two circadian oscillators to initiate melatonin secretion and to respond to light pulses with behavioral phase shifting and induction of Fos-immunoreactivity in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). Hamsters exposed to a regimen of afternoon novel wheel running (NWR) split their circadian rhythms into two distinct components, dividing their activity between the latter half of the night and the afternoon dark period previously associated with NWR. Plasma melatonin concentrations were elevated during both activity bouts of split hamsters but were not elevated during the afternoon period in unsplit controls. Light pulses delivered during either the nighttime or afternoon activity bout caused that activity component to phase-delay on subsequent days and induced robust expression of Fos-immunoreactivity in the SCN. Light pulses during intervening periods of locomotor inactivity were ineffective. The authors propose that NWR splits the circadian pacemaker into two distinct oscillatory components separated by approximately 180 degrees, with each expressing a short subjective night.

Abstract
During summer, female meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) maintain territories and males do not engage in paternal care. As day length shortens, territories dissolve and males nest with females and young. Because paternal behavior has never been studied in free-living meadow voles during colder months or in the laboratory under short photoperiods, the authors examined whether males housed in short day (SD) lengths exhibited more frequent or better quality paternal behavior than males housed in long day (LD) lengths. Sexually and parentally inexperienced (naive) SD males exhibited proportionally more and qualitatively better paternal care than naive LD males. SD males were more responsive than LD males to classic social cues associated with prepartum aggression inhibition and paternal onset. SD sires also displayed qualitatively better paternal behavior than LD sires. These data suggest that meadow vole paternal state is regulated by specific social and environmental cues that may contain reliable information about ecological conditions that favor paternal care.

Abstract
The phenomenon of splitting of locomotor activity rhythms in constant light has implied that the mammalian circadian pacemaker is composed of multiple interacting circadian oscillators. Exposure of male Syrian hamsters to novel running wheels also induces splitting in some reports, although novel wheel running (NWR) is better known for its effects on altering circadian phase and the length of the free-running period. In three experiments, the authors confirm and extend earlier reports of split rhythms induced by NWR. Male Syrian hamsters, entrained to LD 14:10, were transferred for 6 to 11 consecutive days to darkened novel Wahmann wheels at ZT 4 and were returned to their home cages at ZT 9. All hamsters ran robustly in the novel wheels. NWR caused a marked reorganization of home cage wheel-running behavior: Activity onsets delayed progressively with each additional day of NWR. After 11 days, activity onset in the nighttime scotophase was delayed by 7 h and disappeared completely in 2 hamsters (Experiment 1). After 6 to 7 days of NWR (Experiment 2), activity onset delayed by 5 h. Transfer of hamsters to constant darkness (DD) after 7 days of NWR revealed clearly split activity rhythms: The delayed nighttime activity bout was clearly identifiable and characterized by a short duration. A second bout associated with the former time of NWR was equally distinct and exhibited a similarly short duration. These components rejoined after 3 to 5 days in DD accomplished via delays and advances of the nighttime and afternoon components, respectively. The final experiment established that rejoining of activity components could be prevented by perpetuating the light-dark:light-dark cycle used to induce split rhythms. The data suggest that NWR causes selective phase shifting of some circadian oscillators and that component oscillators interact strongly in constant darkness.

Abstract
In voles (Microtus), central oxytocin (OT) receptor patterns are associated with interspecific social organization. Social, monogamous voles have more OT receptors in the extended amygdala than asocial, nonmonogamous voles. Nonmonogamous meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus), which exhibit seasonal changes in social organization (long day [LD] females are territorial, short day [SD] females live socially), provide a model for examining whether OT receptor patterns are associated with seasonal changes in intraspecific social behaviors. The authors examined whether sexually inexperienced (naive) SD females had more OT receptor binding than naive LD females. Naive SD females had greater OT receptor binding in the lateral septum (LS), lateral amygdala (LatAmyg), and central amygdala (CenAmyg) than less social, naive LD females. Because both SD and LD females acquire partner preferences, the authors assessed whether OT receptor binding was associated with partner preference onset. For LD females, partner preference onset corresponded with greater OT receptor binding in the anterior olfactory nucleus, LS, and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, compared with naive LD females. In contrast, naive SD females and those exhibiting partner preferences did not differ. However, SD females that failed to acquire partner preferences showed less OT binding in the LatAmyg and CenAmyg. This study is the first to show that central OT receptor patterns are associated with seasonal changes in intraspecific social organization and partner preference onset in a nonmonogamous rodent.

Abstract
Pravastatin has been shown, in an experimental model of ischemia reperfusion, to increase adenosine levels, which exert a potent and protective effect on the heart. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether pravastatin can provide cardioprotection by increased production of adenosine in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty, a clinical model of ischemia reperfusion. Thirty-five hyperlipidemic patients who underwent elective angioplasty for a major epicardial coronary artery were randomly allocated to either 3-month pravastatin or placebo before catheterization. In the placebo group, the mean ST-segment shift during the second balloon inflation was similar that observed during the first inflation, whereas in the preconditioned patients, the shift was significantly less, which is consistent with ischemic preconditioning. In the pravastatin-treated patients, the changes of ST-segment shift were similar between the first and second balloon inflations. In contrast, the patients who received aminophylline developed higher ST-segment shifts during the first and second inflations than those in the pravastatin-treated group alone. Measurements of chest pain score and myocardial lactate extraction ratios during inflation mirrored those of the ST-segment shift. The present study demonstrates that administration of pravastatin results in a significant gain in tolerance to ischemia during angioplasty. The effect of pravastatin was abolished by aminophylline, suggesting that the cardioprotective effect of pravastatin may result from activation of adenosine receptors.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the patterns of computer usage among adolescents in Hong Kong and to examine whether computer usage is associated with less physical activity and social support among adolescents. METHODS A total of 2110 secondary school students (52% boys and 48% girls) in Hong Kong completed a set of questionnaires to measure their computer usage and lifestyle. Mean age of the respondents was 14.16 years (SD = 1.81 years). Computer usage was taped by asking the students to indicate how much time (in minutes) they spent on the computer each day for doing homework assignments; playing computer games; "surfing" the Internet; and communicating with others. The students also provided information on their social-physical lifestyle. Student's t-tests and analysis of variance were used to examine group differences. Pearson product moment correlations were used to explore relationships between computer usage and lifestyle. RESULTS Boys who use computers for doing homework, "surfing" the Internet, and communicating with others engage in more social-physical activities than others. Boys who use computers to play games tend to be more social-behaviorally inactive. For girls, patterns of computer usage are not related to lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS Computer users tended to engage in social-physical activities more frequently and had higher social support than nonusers. But among computer users, the amount of time spent daily on the computer was not associated with lifestyle. Instead, patterns of computer usage are more related to lifestyle and the relationship is moderated by gender.

Abstract
Cilostazol, a novel oral phosphodiesterase inhibitor, has shown consistent improvement in exercise tolerance in patients with intermittent claudication (IC). In addition to this effect, cilostazol has previously been shown to have beneficial effects on the dyslipidemia, i.e., combination of high triglycerides with low high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) suppresses the activity of lipoprotein lipase, which modulates the metabolism of triglycerides and HDL-C. To determine whether a reduction of IL-6 contributes to the improvement of lipid profiles, we prospectively investigated the effect of cilostazol (n=16, 100 mg, twice daily) on the changes of lipid profiles and on the association with the changes of IL-6 compared with those of pentoxifylline (n=16, 400 mg, bid) in patients with IC. After eight weeks of administration of cilostazol to patients with IC, walking distances were increased, associated with a 29% decrease in plasma triglycerides and a 13% increase in HDL-C. No significant changes of lipid profiles in the pentoxifylline and placebo groups were observed although a similar improvement in walking distances was achieved in the pentoxifylline group. IL-6 levels were significantly reduced in patients receiving cilostazol as compared with those receiving placebo or pentoxifylline. The cilostazol-induced changes in the IL-6 were positively related to those of triglycerides in the cilostazol group (r=0.63, P<0.05) and negatively related to those of HDL-C (r=-0.55, P<0.05). These findings suggest that in addition to consistent improvement of exercise tolerance, cilostazol may improve lipid profiles by reducing IL-6 release. However, pentoxifylline did not affect lipid profiles although a similar improvement of maximal walking distance (MWD) was achieved.

Abstract
Social interactions between conspecifics is a type of nonphotic zeitgeber common to several species. In the diurnal rodent Octodon degus, social interactions enhance reentrainment after phase shifts and can act as a weak zeitgeber. Olfactory stimuli appear necessary for these effects since bulbectomy eliminates socially enhanced reentrainment. In Experiment 1, the authors examined whether stimulation of the main olfactory system was sufficient to enhance reentrainment after 6-h phase advances and delays in the adult female O. degus. When test animals received conspecific odor cues during reentrainment, they entrained 39% faster after phase advances (p < 0.05) and 33% faster after phase delays (p < 0.001) than when they did not receive odor cues. Thus, olfactory cues from distant female donors were sufficient to enhance rates of entrainment in female O. degus and provided results equivalent to earlier studies with donors and shifters housed in the cages together. In Experiment 2, the authors examined whether discrete 3-h and 1-h daily pulses of airborne odors from a group of 5 entrained female degus would be sufficient to produce entrainment of wheel-running activity in adult female conspecifics. During the period of exposure to 3-h pulses, 50% (4/8) of the subjects temporarily entrained to a 24-h cycle, while 12.5% (1/8) of the subjects fully entrained. Exposure to 1-h pulses allowed 37.5% (3/8) of the subjects to temporarily entrain and 12.5% (1/8) of the subjects to fully entrain. Duration of entrained episodes was positively correlated with psi, daily onset of activity with respect to the timing of odor exposure (Pearson r = 0.731; p < 0.05), such that animals with the entraining odor pulse beginning during subjective day (psi = 7.8 h, CT 7.8 +/- 1.4) had longer periods of entrainment (22.2 +/- 5.6 days) than animals with the entraining pulse occurring during subjective night (psi = -4.6 h; CT 19.4 +/- 0.9; 5.6 +/- 0.9 days; p < 0.001). In addition, for each animal, the combined duration of all episodes of 24-h entrainment correlated with increased period length (tau) of free-running rhythms (Pearson r = 0.733; p < 0.05). Thus, daily discrete pulses of odors with durations of either 1 or 3 h from female conspecifics were sufficient to produce both temporary and full entrainment to a 24-h cycle in the majority of female O. degus, and the likelihood of long periods of entrainment correlated with long taus and coordination of the odor pulse with mid subjective day.

Abstract
The fruiting body and culture broth of many edible mushrooms contain water-soluble polysaccharides. Numerous researchers have reported that these polysaccharides have immunoenhancing effects. In this study, Hericium erinaceus and Hericium laciniatum were separately cultivated in a shaker at 25 degrees C for 25 days. Polysaccharides were extracted from the culture broth. The molecular weights were larger than 1 x 10(5) k Da and their polysaccharide components were mainly glucose in H. erinaceus and galactose in H. laciniatum. Furthermore, we investigated these two purified water-soluble polysaccharides for their anti-artificial pulmonary metastatic tumor and immunoenhancing effects in ICR mice. The results revealed that both polysaccharides had significant anti-artificial pulmonary metastatic tumor effects in mice (p < 0.05). Additionally, the polysaccharide from H. erinaceus was more effective than that from H. laciniatum. However, both of the polysaccharides enhanced the increase of T cells and macrophages. The numbers of CD4+ cells and macrophages were significantly higher in the test group than in the control group (p < 0.05). From our results, no differences were found between the two purified water-soluble polysaccharides in the antitumor effects and immunoenhancing activities (p > 0.05).

Abstract
Cilostazol is a new phosphodiesterase inhibitor with anti-platelet and vasodilatory properties. Cilostazol and pentoxifylline are the only two drugs that have been approved for the treatment of patients with intermittent claudication. However, the mechanisms by which exercise tolerance is improved remain unclear. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent endothelial mitogen that results in angiogenesis when overexpressed in human subjects. To assess the potential role of VEGF in the improvement in exercise tolerance, we investigated plasma levels of VEGF in 50 patients with intermittent claudication who were allocated randomly to groups receiving cilostazol (n=17), pentoxifylline (n=17) or placebo (n=16). Patients given either cilostazol or pentoxifylline showed a significant improvements in maximal walking distance compared with the placebo group (34 m and 33 m respectively, compared with 5 m; both P<0.05). Neither cilostazol nor pentoxifylline increased the ankle-brachial index after treatment. Circulating VEGF levels were increased (from 116+/-29 to 169+/-45 pg/ml; P=0.002), and the levels of VEGF were correlated significantly with exercise tolerance in a positive direction (r=0.88, P=0.004), in those patients treated with cilostazol that did not have diabetes mellitus. In contrast, VEGF levels remained stable after the administration of pentoxifylline. These findings suggest that VEGF may contribute to the cilostazol-related improvement in exercise tolerance in non-diabetic patients. However, pentoxifylline did not affect VEGF levels, although a similar improvement in maximal walking distance was achieved. Thus the mechanisms involved in the pentoxifylline-treated group were different from those in the cilostazol-treated group, and require further study.

Abstract
PURPOSE In light of the issues associated with the psychosocial adjustment of people with epilepsy that have been widely reported, this study examined these issues within a Chinese cultural context. METHODS Fifty patients with epilepsy completed The Washington Psychosocial Inventory, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, and a questionnaire that assessed their psychosocial difficulties and coping styles. Multiple regression procedure was used to examine the strength of various medical and social factors in predicting the psychosocial adjustment problems of these participants. RESULTS Social factors, such as self-perception and coping strategies, were more powerful predictors of psychosocial adjustment in people with epilepsy than the medical factors associated with epilepsy. CONCLUSIONS These findings showed that psychosocial maladjustment is a significant issue for people with epilepsy in Hong Kong. The emerging importance of social factors as predictors of psychosocial adjustment in epilepsy, as compared with medical factors, highlights the need for developing tailored counseling therapy and social support groups for people with epilepsy.

Abstract
A polyphasic taxonomic study, including 16S rDNA sequence analysis, DNA-DNA hybridizations, DNA base ratio determinations, amplified 165 rDNA restriction analysis, whole-cell protein analyses and extensive biochemical characterization, was conducted to clarify the relationships of eight isolates from root nodules of Mimosa species and one isolate from sputum of a cystic fibrosis patient. All nine isolates were classified as a novel Ralstonia species, for which the name Ralstonia taiwanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is LMG 19424T (= CCUG 44338T). R. taiwanensis effectively nodulated the Mimosa species and is the first beta-proteobacterium that is known to be capable of root nodule formation and nitrogen fixation.

Abstract
To identify the specific frontal and cingulate regions involved in response inhibition, five Chinese right-handed male volunteers with an attention span reaching or exceeding a 7-digit level participated in this blocked design functional magnetic resonance imaging study. Each block represented one of the two experimental conditions, the Correct Matching or the Incorrect Matching condition. In the Correct Matching condition, the subjects were required to make correct judgement of whether the two 3-digit numbers presented in succession were the same or not; whereas in the Incorrect Matching condition, the participants were instructed to inhibit the correct responses. Bilateral activations of the prefrontal and anterior cingulate as well as the left posterior cingulated cortex were observed while the subjects were exercising response inhibition. The roles of these activations in response inhibition were discussed.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare biological properties, including osteoconduction, osseointegration, and shear strength, between plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) and HA/tricalcium phosphate (TCP) coatings, using a transcortical implant model in the femora of canines. After 3 and 12 weeks of implantation, the implants with surrounding bone were assessed histologically in undecalcified sections in backscattered electron images (BEIs) under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). After short-term (3 week) follow-up, both coatings conducted new bone formation and revealed direct bone-to-coating contact. The HA/TCP coating could not enhance early host-to-coating responses. At 12 weeks, serious dissolution of the HA/TCP coatings evidently occurred. By the new bone healing index (NBHI) and apposition index (AI), we found no significant difference between HA/TCP-coated implants and HA-coated implants throughout all implant periods. At 12 weeks of implantation, some particles dissociated from the HA/TCP coating were found within the remodeling canal. After push-out measurements, the shear strength and failure mode of HA/TCP-coated implants were similar to those of HA-coated implants, and no statistical differences were found between either coating. Consequently, this study indicates that HA/TCP coatings have excellent biological response and may be considered suitable bioactive ceramic coatings for short-term clinical use.

Abstract
Pharmacological experiments have implicated a role for central arginine vasopressin (AVP) in regulating paternal behavior in monogamous prairie voles. Although nonmonogamous meadow voles exhibit appreciable paternal care when housed under winter, short day lengths (SD), no research has examined whether the same neurobiological systems are involved in regulating paternal behavior in a nonmonogamous species when it behaves paternally. The goal of these experiments was to determine whether central administration of AVP, but not cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), affected the suppression of pup-directed aggression and/or the onset of paternal behavior in meadow voles. Data from experiment 1 implicated a role for AVP in facilitating changes in male behavior: central administration of 1 ng of AVP (but not 3 ng or CSF) inhibited pup-directed aggression in previously pup-aggressive males, and 3 ng of AVP (but not 1 ng or CSF) induced paternal behavior in previously nonpaternal males. In contrast, AVP (1 and 3 ng) did not enhance paternal behavior in already paternal males. Experiment 2 tested the specificity of AVP. Previous research indicated that 24 h of unmated cohabitation with a female reliably induced paternal behavior in SD males. Hence, experiment 2 examined whether administration of a V(1a) AVP antagonist (AVPA), but not CSF, prior to 24 h of unmated cohabitation would block the onset of paternal behavior. Males that received CSF displayed paternal behavior faster and engaged in more investigatory and paternal behaviors than males that received AVPA. Thus, pharmacological experiments support the hypothesis that AVP likely regulates paternal behavior in both facultatively and consistently paternal vole species.

Abstract
This study examined the effect of exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by mobile phones on human attention. Three measures of attention were administered to 72 teenagers, 37 of whom were mobile phone users. The results showed that the mobile phone users performed better on one of the three measures of attention than did the non-mobile phone users. The results suggest that exposure to the electromagnetic field emitted by mobile phones may have a mild facilitating effect on attention functions, which is consistent with previous observations that exposure to the electromagnetic field has a facilitating effect on cognitive processing. The possibility that mobile phone users may be naturally better at multiple tasking tasks was discussed.

Abstract
The effects of different language backgrounds on trail making tasks were examined in this study. The measures adopted were the Color Trails Test (CTT) and the Trail Making Test (TMT), the former being the culturally fair analogue of the latter. Eighty-four right-handed participants belonging to the Chinese-English Bilingual (CEB) and English Monolingual (EM) groups participated in this study. The results of between-group comparisons revealed no significant differences in performance on the two measures between our Chinese bilingual and English monolingual participants, except on the TMT-A. However, a within-group correlation indicated that performances on the TMT and CTT were highly correlated for the English sample, but not for the Chinese. These observations suggest that trail making tasks like the TMT and CTT are themselves generally fair across Chinese and English, but equivalence between them may be more language-specific. Furthermore, mastery of a language loaded on temporal sequencing like English may give an advantage in the completion of trail making tasks.

Abstract
Sex differences have been identified in a variety of circadian rhythms, including free-running rhythms, light-induced phase shifts, sleep patterns, hormonal fluctuations, and rates of reentrainment. In the precocial, diurnal rodent Octodon degus, sex differences have been found in length of free-running rhythm (tau), phase response curves, rates of reentrainment, and in the use of social cues to facilitate reentrainment. Although gonadal hormones primarily organize circadian rhythms during early development, adult gonadal hormones have activational properties on various aspects of circadian rhythms in a number of species examined. Gonadectomy of adult female O. degus did not influence tau, phase angle of entrainment, or activity patterns in previous experiments. The present experiment examined the role of gonadal hormones in adult male degus' circadian wheel-running rhythms. We predicted that male gonadal hormones would have an activational effect on some aspects of circadian rhythms, particularly those in which we see sex differences. Phase angles of entrainment, tau, length of the active period (alpha), maximum and mean activity levels, and activity amplitude were examined for intact and castrated males housed in LD 12:12. Responses to light pulses while housed in constant darkness (DD) were also compared. Castration had no significant effect on tau or light-induced phase shifts. However, castration significantly increased phase angle of entrainment and decreased activity levels. The data indicate that adult gonadal steroids are not responsible for the sex differences in endogenous circadian mechanisms of O. degus (tau, PRC), although they influence activity level and phase angle of entrainment. This is most likely due to masking properties of testosterone, similar to the activity-increasing effects of estrogen during estrus in O. degus females.

Abstract
This is a preliminary report of the quality of life of 9 people, 5 men and 4 women, in Hong Kong who underwent temporal lobectomy for seizure control. The Chinese version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Measure Abbreviated Version, validated in Hong Kong, was used as the outcome measure. Analysis suggested that the quality of life of these participants after successful temporal lobectomy was poorer than that of 157 healthy controls in the physical and psychological domains as measured. This suggests that other factors in addition to achieving complete seizure control play significant roles in promoting the quality of life of such patients.

Abstract
Distension of the urinary bladder causes an increase in efferent sympathetic activity, which can precipitate myocardial ischemia. Smoking has been shown to modulate activities of afferent nerves from the distended urinary bladder and to impair endothelial function in response to sympathetic activation. To assess the effect of bladder distension on coronary dynamics in smokers, we measured epicardial and microvascular responses in 24 patients with early atherosclerosis (< 50% diameter stenosis). Patients were classified into habitual smokers (group 1, n = 14) and nonsmokers (group 2, n = 10). Habitual smokers were randomized into two subgroups on the basis of the use of doxazosin, as follows: subgroup 1A (n = 7), without administration of doxazosin before catheterization; subgroup 1B (n = 7), with dosing doxazosin. In response to bladder distension (mean intravesical pressure 21.5 mmHg), bladder distension significantly decreased coronary diameter at the stenotic segments, coronary blood flow, and increased coronary resistance compared with baseline values, in subgroup 1A patients. In subgroup 1B patients during bladder distension, coronary diameter, coronary blood flow, and coronary resistance did not show significant changes compared with baseline values. There were significant differences of coronary diameter at the stenotic segments, coronary blood flow, and of changes of coronary vascular resistance between subgroup 1A and group 2 during bladder distension, despite similar changes in rate-pressure product. The present study showed that urinary bladder distension caused an abnormal vasomotor response of epicardial vasoconstriction and a concomitant increased coronary resistance, which leads to reduction in coronary blood flow in patients with early atherosclerosis. Smoking may further impair the response, implying that smoking has exaggerated response to sympathetic stimulation of conduit and resistance vessels. The abnormal response was abolished by pretreated administration of doxazosin, suggesting that the involved mechanisms are related to alpha(1)-adrenoceptors.

Abstract
In this paper, we demonstrate an approach by which some evoked neuronal events can be probed by functional MRI (fMRI) signal with temporal resolution at the time scale of tens of milliseconds. The approach is based on the close relationship between neuronal electrical events and fMRI signal that is experimentally demonstrated in concurrent fMRI and electroencephalographic (EEG) studies conducted in a rat model with forepaw electrical stimulation. We observed a refractory period of neuronal origin in a two-stimuli paradigm: the first stimulation pulse suppressed the evoked activity in both EEG and fMRI signal responding to the subsequent stimulus for a period of several hundred milliseconds. When there was an apparent site-site interaction detected in the evoked EEG signal induced by two stimuli that were primarily targeted to activate two different sites in the brain, fMRI also displayed signal amplitude modulation because of the interactive event. With visual stimulation using two short pulses in the human brain, a similar refractory phenomenon was observed in activated fMRI signals in the primary visual cortex. In addition, for interstimulus intervals shorter than the known latency time of the evoked potential induced by the first stimulus ( approximately 100 ms) in the primary visual cortex of the human brain, the suppression was not present. Thus, by controlling the temporal relation of input tasks, it is possible to study temporal evolution of certain neural events at the time scale of their evoked electrical activity by noninvasive fMRI methodology.

Abstract
The intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) modulates photic and nonphotic entrainment of circadian rhythms in nocturnal species, but nothing is known about its role in diurnal species. We investigated the significance of the IGL for circadian rhythm function in the diurnal rodent, Octodon degus, by determining the effects of bilateral electrolytic IGL lesions (IGL(X)) on: (i) photic entrainment; (ii) reentrainment rates to photic cues following a 6-h phase advance of the light-dark (LD) cycle; (iii) reentrainment rates to nonphotic social and photic cues following a 6-h phase advance of the LD cycle; and (iv) the circadian period (tau) of the activity rhythm in constant darkness (DD). IGL(X) significantly lengthened the duration (alpha) of the entrained activity rhythm and produced a significantly earlier phase of activity onset under entrained (LD 12:12) conditions, but did not change phase of activity offset, rhythm amplitude or mean daily activity levels. IGL(X) failed to modify tau of free-running activity rhythms in DD or alter reentrainment rates of circadian rhythms to nonphotic social and photic cues or photic cues alone. Thus, the IGL modulates two parameters of photic entrainment, but is not necessary for reentrainment to either nonphotic social or photic cues. Our results contribute to the growing comparative database on the neural mechanisms controlling circadian rhythms and indicate that the role of the IGL varies across species with no apparent relationship between diurnality-nocturnality and circadian function.

Abstract
Left ventricular (LV) mass is a powerful predictor for future cardiovascular events. Epidemiologic studies have shown that hyperlipidemia is associated with higher LV mass. The effects of statin therapy for hyperlipidemia on LV mass have not been studied. To determine the effects of statin therapy on LV mass, we prospectively studied 3 groups of age and body surface area-matched patients: group 1 (n = 20), patients with systemic hypertension and hyperlipidemia treated with pravastatin plus anti-hypertensive drugs; group 2 (n = 20), patients with hypertension and hyperlipidemia treated with hypertensive agents and diet control alone; and group 3 (n = 20), hypertensive patients with normolipidemia treated with antihypertensive agents. A group of controls without hypertension or hyperlipidemia was used for comparison. Echocardiograms were recorded at baseline and after 6-month therapy. All hypertensive groups showed significant decreases in LV mass index after treatment. Group 1 had the greatest decrease in LV mass and it was significantly higher than in groups 2 and 3. Multivariate analysis revealed that regression of LV mass was significantly correlated only with the use of statins and sex (p = 0.005 and 0.01, respectively, R(2) = 0.47). Linear regression analysis in group 1 showed a significant correlation between changes in arterial compliance and LV mass regression (r = 0.57, p = 0.01). Thus, the addition of a statin may have an additional effect on reducing LV mass, independent of lipid-lowering effects.

Abstract
A Si-based miniaturized device for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been developed. The device has Pt temperature sensors and heaters integrated on top of the reaction chamber for real-time accurate temperature sensing and control. Reaction temperature of the device is digitally controlled to achieve a temperature accuracy of +/-0.025 degrees C. The effects of PCR protocol optimization on the amplification performance of the surface-passivated chip reactor have been investigated in detail and quantitatively compared with that of the conventional thermal cycler. In this study, four traditional Chinese medicine genes including Fritillaria cirrhosa, Cartharmus tinctorius, Adenophora lobophilla, and Stephania tetrandra are used as model template. With appropriate chamber surface treatment (chlorotrimethylsilane/polyadenylic acid or SiO2 coatings), the device demonstrates amplification as efficient as that in the conventional thermal cycler at optimized MgCl2 concentration. The amplified DNA has concentration higher than 27 ng/microL, which is sufficient for subsequent on-chip analyses and detection. Experimental results reveal the importance of inclusion of BSA for an efficient amplification in the SiO2-passivated device and the excellent reusability of the device with a simple cleaning step.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to examine whether distention of the urinary bladder, a physiologic stimulus, could induce impaired coronary circulation in patients with early atherosclerosis. BACKGROUND Distention of the urinary bladder reflexively causes an increase in sympathetic activity. The effect of such distention on the coronary circulation in patients with early atherosclerosis remains unknown. METHODS To assess the effect of bladder distention on coronary dynamic forces, epicardial and microvascular responses were measured with an intracoronary Doppler flow wire in 40 patients with early atherosclerosis (<50% diameter stenosis). Patients were randomized into two groups according to whether they did not (group 1, n = 20) or did have (group 2, n = 20) pretreatment with an alpha1-adrenergic receptor blocker (oral doxazosin, 2 mg). Coronary flow velocity was monitored by quantitative coronary angiography at baseline, during urinary bladder distention and after intracoronary nitroglycerin injection. RESULTS Bladder distention significantly decreased the coronary diameter in the stenotic segments (p<0.001), decreased coronary blood flow (p<0.001) and increased coronary resistance (p<0.001), as compared with baseline values, in group 1 patients. In group 2 patients with bladder distention, the angiographic variables did not show significant changes, as compared with baseline values. No significant differences were noted between the groups in the responses of the angiographic variables after nitroglycerin administration. CONCLUSIONS The present study shows, for the first time, that urinary bladder distention caused vasoconstriction of coronary conduit and resistance vessels involved mechanisms related to alpha1 adrenoceptors. Pretreated administration of doxazosin reversed the changes toward baseline. Vasoconstriction during bladder distention can be relieved after nitroglycerin administration, suggesting an unchanged responsiveness of vascular smooth muscle cells to such distention.
