Unraveling the optoelectronic properties of CoSbx intrinsic selective solar absorber towards high-temperature surfaces

The combination of the ability to absorb most of the solar radiation and simultaneously suppress infrared re-radiation allows selective solar absorbers (SSAs) to maximize solar energy to heat conversion, which is critical to several advanced applications. The intrinsic spectral selective materials are rare in nature and only a few demonstrated complete solar absorption. Typically, intrinsic materials exhibit high performances when integrated into complex multilayered solar absorber systems due to their limited spectral selectivity and solar absorption. In this study, we propose CoSbx (2 < x < 3) as a new exceptionally efficient SSA. Here we demonstrate that the low bandgap nature of CoSbx endows broadband solar absorption (0.96) over the solar spectral range and simultaneous low emissivity (0.18) in the mid-infrared region, resulting in a remarkable intrinsic spectral solar selectivity of 5.3. Under 1 sun illumination, the heat concentrates on the surface of the CoSbx thin film, and an impressive temperature of 101.7 °C is reached, demonstrating the highest value among reported intrinsic SSAs. Furthermore, the CoSbx was tested for solar water evaporation achieving an evaporation rate of 1.4 kg m-2 h-1. This study could expand the use of narrow bandgap semiconductors as efficient intrinsic SSAs with high surface temperatures in solar applications.

An advanced PdNPs@MoS2 nanocomposite for efficient oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media

In response to the increasing availability of hydrogen energy and renewable energy sources, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based electrocatalysts are becoming increasingly important for efficient electrochemical water splitting. This study involves the incorporation of palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) into hydrothermally grown MoS2via a UV light assisted process to afford PdNPs@MoS2 as an alternative electrocatalyst for efficient energy storage and conversion. Various analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), were used to investigate the morphology, crystal quality, and chemical composition of the samples. Although PdNPs did not alter the MoS2 morphology, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity was driven at considerable overpotential. When electrochemical water splitting was performed in 1.0 M KOH aqueous solution with PdNPs@MoS2 (sample-2), an overpotential of 253 mV was observed. Furthermore, OER performance was highly favorable through rapid reaction kinetics and a low Tafel slope of 59 mV dec-1, as well as high durability and stability. In accordance with the electrochemical results, sample-2 showed also a lower charge transfer resistance, which again provided evidence of OER activity. The enhanced OER activity was attributed to a number of factors, including structural, surface chemical compositions, and synergistic effects between MoS2 and PdNPs.

Insight on the Intracellular Supramolecular Assembly of DTTO: A Peculiar Example of Cell-Driven Polymorphism

The assembly of supramolecular structures within living systems is an innovative approach for introducing artificial constructs and developing biomaterials capable of influencing and/or regulating the biological responses of living organisms. By integrating chemical, photophysical, morphological, and structural characterizations, it is shown that the cell-driven assembly of 2,6-diphenyl-3,5-dimethyl-dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene-4,4-dioxide (DTTO) molecules into fibers results in the formation of a "biologically assisted" polymorphic form, hence the term bio-polymorph. Indeed, X-ray diffraction reveals that cell-grown DTTO fibers present a unique molecular packing leading to specific morphological, optical, and electrical properties. Monitoring the process of fiber formation in cells with time-resolved photoluminescence, it is established that cellular machinery is necessary for fiber production and a non-classical nucleation mechanism for their growth is postulated. These biomaterials may have disruptive applications in the stimulation and sense of living cells, but more crucially, the study of their genesis and properties broadens the understanding of life beyond the native components of cells.

Cellulose acetate membranes loaded with combinations of tetraphenylporphyrin, graphene oxide and Pluronic F-127 as responsive materials with antibacterial photodynamic activity

The development of polymeric fabrics with photoinduced antibacterial activity is important for different emerging applications, ranging from materials for medical and clinical practices to disinfection of objects for public use. In this work we prepared a series of cellulose acetate membranes, by means of phase inversion technique, introducing different additives in the starting polymeric solution. The loading of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP), a known photosensitizer, was considered to impart antibacterial photodynamic properties to the produced membranes. Besides, the addition of a surfactant (Pluronic F-127) allowed to modify the morphology of the membranes whereas the use of graphene oxide (GO) enabled further photo-activated antibacterial activity. The three additives were tested in various concentrations and in different combinations in order to carefully explore the effects of their mixing on the final photophysical and photodynamic properties. A complete structural/morphologycal characterization of the produced membranes has been performed, together with a detailed photophysical study of the TPP-containing samples, including absorption and emission features, excited state lifetime, singlet oxygen production, and confocal analysis. Their antibacterial activity has been assessed in vitro against S. aureus and E. coli, and the results demonstrated excellent bacterial inactivation for the membranes containing a combination of the three additives, revealing also a non-innocent role of the membrane porous structure in the final antibacterial capacity.

Advances in Focused Ion Beam Tomography for Three-Dimensional Characterization in Materials Science

Over the years, FIB-SEM tomography has become an extremely important technique for the three-dimensional reconstruction of microscopic structures with nanometric resolution. This paper describes in detail the steps required to perform this analysis, from the experimental setup to the data analysis and final reconstruction. To demonstrate the versatility of the technique, a comprehensive list of applications is also summarized, ranging from batteries to shale rocks and even some types of soft materials. Moreover, the continuous technological development, such as the introduction of the latest models of plasma and cryo-FIB, can open the way towards the analysis with this technique of a large class of soft materials, while the introduction of new machine learning and deep learning systems will not only improve the resolution and the quality of the final data, but also expand the degree of automation and efficiency in the dataset handling. These future developments, combined with a technique that is already reliable and widely used in various fields of research, are certain to become a routine tool in electron microscopy and material characterization.

RuO2 Nanostructure as an Efficient and Versatile Catalyst for H2 Photosynthesis

Photocatalytic H₂ generation holds promise in the green production of alternative fuels and valuable chemicals. Seeking alternative, cost-effective, stable, and possibly reusable catalysts represents a timeless challenge for scientists working in the field. Herein, commercial RuO₂ nanostructures were found to be a robust, versatile, and competitive catalyst in H₂ photoproduction in several conditions. We employed it in a classic three-component system and compared its activities with those of the widely used platinum nanoparticle catalyst. We observed a hydrogen evolution rate of 0.137 mol h^-1 g^-1 and an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 6.8% in water using EDTA as an electron donor. Moreover, the favorable employment of l-cysteine as the electron source opens possibilities precluded to other noble metal catalyst. The versatility of the system has also been demonstrated in organic media with impressive H₂ production in acetonitrile. The robustness has been proved by the recovery of the catalyst by centrifugation and reusage alternatively in different media.

Changing the Microstructural and Chemical Properties of Graphene Oxide Through a Chemical Route

The aim of this work is to investigate the possibility of engineering desired molecular sp² structures in graphene oxide, via controlled oxidation of graphite powder, in order to achieve tunable chemical and microstructural properties useful for optoelectronics or sensing applications. Specifically, GO powder is obtained by a modified Hummers method, by using different concentrations of potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) in order to change the number of oxygen functionalities in the graphitic structure. Then, a successive alkaline treatment is performed by increasing the KOH concentration. The alkaline treatment induces a noticeable variation of the GO microstructural and chemical properties, which is accompanied by a strong enhancement of photoluminecence. PL and PLE measurements reveal that the configuration of electronic energy states changes as a function of the KMnO₄ and KOH concentration, by introducing further electronic n levels available for n→π* transitions. In particular, the number of sp² small domains embedded among oxygen-sp³ domains, increases under the KOH treatment, due to the addition of OH groups. Most of these sp² domains are lifted-off from GO and thrown away in the surnatant giving it high blue photoluminescence excited at λ_exc ∼ 319 nm. The employ of combined spectroscopy techniques allows a deep investigation of the microstructural and chemical changes induced by chemical treatments, opening the way to the fine tuning of GO functional properties.

Novel Cu(I)-5-nitropyridine-2-thiol Cluster with NIR Emission: Structural and Photophysical Characterization

A novel Cu(I) cluster compound has been synthesized by reacting CuI with the 2,2'-dithiobis(5-nitropyridine) ligand under solvothermal conditions. During the reaction, the original ligand breaks into the 5-nitropyridine-2-thiolate moiety, which acts as the coordinating ligand with both N- and S-sites, leading to a distorted octahedral Cu₆S₆ cluster. The structure has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FT-IR analysis, and the photophysical properties have been determined in the solid state by means of steady-state and time-resolved optical techniques. The cluster presents a near-infrared emission showing an unusual temperature dependence: when passing from 77 to 298 K, a blue-shift of the emission band is observed, associated with a decrease in its intensity. Time-dependent-density functional theory calculations suggest that the observed behavior can be ascribed to a complex interplay of excited states, basically in the triplet manifold.

Keratin/Polylactic acid/graphene oxide composite nanofibers for drug delivery

In this work keratin/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) 50/50 wt blend nanofibers with different loadings of graphene-oxide (GO) were prepared by electrospinning and tested as delivery systems of Rhodamine Blue (RhB), selected as a model of a drug. The effect of GO on the electrospinnability and drug release mechanism and kinetics was investigated. Rheological measurements carried out on the blend solutions revealed unsatisfactory compatibility between keratin and PLA under quiet condition. Accordingly, poor interfacial adhesion between the two phases was observed by SEM analysis of a film prepared by solution casting. On the contrary, keratin chains seem to rearrange under the flux conditions of the electrospinning process thus promoting better interfacial interactions between the two polymers, thereby enhancing their miscibility, which resulted in homogeneous and defect-free nanofibers. The loading of GO into the keratin/PLA solution contributes to increase its viscosity, its shear thinning behavior, and its conductivity. Accordingly, thinner and more homogeneous nanofibers resulted from solutions with a relatively high conductivity coupled with a pronounced shear thinning behavior. FTIR and DSC analyses have underlined, that while the PLA/GO interfacial interactions significantly compete with the PLA/keratin ones, there are no significant effects of GO on the structural organization of keratin in blend with the PLA. However, GO offers several advantages from the application point of view by slightly improving the mechanical properties of the electrospun mats and by slowing down the release of the model drug through the reduction of the matrix swelling.

pH Switchable Water Dispersed Photocatalytic Nanoparticles

Photogeneration of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) finds applications in fields as different as nanomedicine, art preservation, air and water depollution and surface decontamination. Here we present photocatalytic nanoparticles (NP) that are active only at acidic pH while they do not show relevant ROS photo‐generation at neutral pH. This dual responsivity (to light and pH) is achieved by stabilizing the surface of TiO₂ NP with a specific organic shell during the synthesis and it is peculiar of the achieved core shell‐structure, as demonstrated by comparison with commercial photocatalytic TiO₂ NP. For the investigation of the photocatalytic activity, we developed two methods that allow real time detection of the process preventing any kind of artifact arising from post‐treatments and delayed analysis. The reversibility of the pH response was also demonstrated as well as the selective photo‐killing of cancer cells at acidic pH.

Facile deposition of palladium oxide (PdO) nanoparticles on CoNi2S4microstructures towards enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Strong demand for renewable energy resources and clean environments have inspired scientists and researchers across the globe to carry out research activities on energy provision, conversion, and storage devices. In this context, development of outperform, stable, and durable electrocatalysts has been identified as one of the major objectives for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, we offer facile approach for the deposition of few palladium oxide (PdO) nanoparticles on the cobalt-nickel bi-metallic sulphide (CoNi₂S₄) microstructures represented as PdO@ CoNi₂S₄using ultraviolet light (UV) reduction method. The morphology, crystalline structure, and chemical composition of the as-prepared PdO@ CoNi₂S₄composite were probed through scanning electron microscopy, powder x-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. The combined physical characterization results revealed that ultraviolet light (UV) light promoted the facile deposition of PdO nanoparticles of 10 nm size onto the CoNi₂S₄and the fabricated PdO@ CoNi₂S₄composite has a remarkable activity towards OER in alkaline media. Significantly, it exhibited a low onset potential of 1.41 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a low overpotential of 230 mV at 10 mA cm^-2. Additionally, the fabricated PdO@ CoNi₂S₄composite has a marked stability of 45 h. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has shown that the PdO@CoNi₂S₄composite has a low charge transfer resistance of 86.3 Ohms, which favours the OER kinetics. The PdO@ CoNi₂S₄composite provided the multiple number of active sites, which favoured the enhanced OER activity. Taken together, this new class of material could be utilized in energy conversion and storage as well as sensing applications.

All-Electrochemical Nanofabrication of Stacked Ternary Metal Sulfide/Graphene Electrodes for High-Performance Alkaline Batteries

Energy-storage materials can be assembled directly on the electrodes of a battery using electrochemical methods, this allowing sequential deposition, high structural control, and low cost. Here, a two-step approach combining electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and cathodic electrodeposition (CED) is demonstrated to fabricate multilayer hierarchical electrodes of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and mixed transition metal sulfides (NiCoMnS_x ). The process is performed directly on conductive electrodes applying a small electric bias to electro-deposit rGO and NiCoMnS_x in alternated cycles, yielding an ideal porous network and a continuous path for transport of ions and electrons. A fully rechargeable alkaline battery (RAB) assembled with such electrodes gives maximum energy density of 97.2 Wh kg^-1 and maximum power density of 3.1 kW kg^-1 , calculated on the total mass of active materials, and outstanding cycling stability (retention 72% after 7000 charge/discharge cycles at 10 A g^-1 ). When the total electrode mass of the cell is considered, the authors achieve an unprecedented gravimetric energy density of 68.5 Wh kg^-1 , sevenfold higher than that of typical commercial supercapacitors, higher than that of Ni/Cd or lead-acid Batteries and similar to Ni-MH Batteries. The approach can be used to assemble multilayer composite structures on arbitrary electrode shapes.

Light-harvesting antennae based on copper indium sulfide (CIS) quantum dots

Copper indium sulfide quantum dots (CIS QDs) and their core-shell analogues (CIS@ZnS QDs) were functionalized with pyrene chromophores via a dihydrolipoamide bifunctional binding moiety: UV excitation of the pyrene chromophores resulted in sensitized emission of the CIS core because of an efficient energy transfer process; the core-shell hybrid system exhibits a 50% increased brightness when excited at 345 nm.

NiNP@rGO Nanocomposites as Heterogeneous Catalysts for Thiocarboxylation Cross-Coupling Reactions

A new type of ligand-free Ni-nanoparticles supported on rGO (size distribution average d = 9 ± 3 nm) was prepared and fully characterized via morphological (Fe-SEM), structural (P-XRD, HR-TEM), and spectroscopic (ICP-EOS, XPS) analysis tools. The metal composite was effectively employed in the unprecedented heterogeneously Ni-assisted cross-coupling reaction of aryl/vinyl iodides and thiocarboxylates. A range of sulfur-containing aryl as well as vinyl derivatives (15 examples) was achieved in high yields (up to 82%), under mild reaction conditions, and with wide functional group tolerance.

Microstructural features assessment of different waterlogged wood species by NMR diffusion validated with complementary techniques

Wood is a hygroscopic, multi-scale and anisotropic natural material composed of pores with different size and differently oriented. In particular, archaeologically excavated wood generally is waterlogged wood with very high moisture content (400%-800%) that need to have a rapid investigation at the microstructural level to obtain the best treatment with preservative agents. Time-dependent diffusion coefficient D(t) quantified by Pulse Field Gradient (PFG) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques provides useful information about complex porous media, such as the tortuosity (τ) describing pore connectivity and fluid transport through media, the average-pore size, the anisotropic degree (a_n). However, diffusion NMR is intrinsically limited since it is an indirect measure of medium microstructure and relies on inferences from models and estimation of relevant diffusion parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to validate the information obtained from NMR diffusion parameters through complementary investigations. In this work, the structures of five waterlogged wood species were studied by PFG of absorbed water. D(t) and τ of water diffusing along and perpendicular to vessels/tracheids main axes together with relaxation times and a_n were quantified. From these parameters, the pore sizes distribution and the wood microstructure characterization were obtained. Results among wood species were compared, validated and integrated by micro-imaging NMR (μ-MRI), environmental-scanning electron-microscope (ESEM) images, wood dry density and imbibition times measurement of all woods. The work suggests that a_n vs τ rather than the estimated pore size diversifies and characterize the different wood species. As a consequence diffusion-anisotropy vs tortuosity could be an alternative method to characterize and differentiate wood species of waterlogged wood when high resolution images (μ-MRI and ESEM) are not available. Moreover, the combined use of D(t) and micro-MRI expands the scale of dimensions observable by NMR covering all the interesting length scales of wood.

Luminescent silicon nanocrystals appended with photoswitchable azobenzene units

Confinement of multiple azobenzene chromophores covalently linked at the surface of luminescent silicon nanocrystals preserves the photoswitching behavior and modulates the nanocrystal polarity. Concomitantly, the thermal Z→E isomerization is strongly accelerated and the nanocrystal luminescence is reduced by an energy transfer process resulting in photosensitized E→Z isomerization.

Development of a dedicated instrumentation for electrical and thermal characterization of chemiresistive gas sensors

This work presents the design and validation of a measuring instrumentation for an easy, complete, and tunable characterization of chemiresistive gas sensors based on metal-oxide semiconductors. The equipment, described in depth both as hardware and as software, was designed to monitor the electrical behavior of gas sensors in controlled thermodynamic conditions. The main goal of this setup is to synchronize the electrical characterization with different measuring conditions, i.e., operating temperature, relative humidity, and gas target concentration. This operation allows us to automate various measurement protocols, otherwise impossible to obtain manually. In particular, this instrumentation permits to correlate the response of a chemiresistive gas sensor to the applied voltage, to its working temperature, and to the gas concentration, automating the acquisition of the current-voltage characteristic and the current-temperature characteristic (Arrhenius plot) of sensing films. The experimental setup was validated by reporting the electrical characterization of a standard metal-oxide-based gas sensing material, such as SnO₂, working under different thermodynamic conditions.

Controllable Synthesis of 2D Nonlayered Cr2S3 Nanosheets and Their Electrocatalytic Activity Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The design of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts based on Earth-abundant materials holds great promise for realizing practically viable water-splitting systems. In this regard, two-dimensional (2D) nonlayered materials have received considerable attention in recent years owing to their intrinsic dangling bonds which give rise to the exposure of unsaturated active sites. In this work, we solved the synthesis challenge in the development of a 2D nonlayered Cr2S3 catalyst for OER application via introducing a controllable chemical vapor deposition scheme. The as-obtained catalyst exhibits a very good OER activity requiring overpotentials of only 230 mV and 300 mV to deliver current densities of 10 mA cm−2 and 30 mA cm−2, respectively, with robust stability. This study provides a general approach to optimize the controllable growth of 2D nonlayered material and opens up a fertile ground for studying the various strategies to enhance the water splitting reactions.

Ultrafast and Highly Sensitive Chemically Functionalized Graphene Oxide-Based Humidity Sensors: Harnessing Device Performances via the Supramolecular Approach

Humidity sensors have been gaining increasing attention because of their relevance for well-being. To meet the ever-growing demand for new cost-efficient materials with superior performances, graphene oxide (GO)-based relative humidity sensors have emerged recently as low-cost and highly sensitive devices. However, current GO-based sensors suffer from important drawbacks including slow response and recovery, as well as poor stability. Interestingly, reduced GO (rGO) exhibits higher stability, yet accompanied by a lower sensitivity to humidity due to its hydrophobic nature. With the aim of improving the sensing performances of rGO, here we report on a novel generation of humidity sensors based on a simple chemical modification of rGO with hydrophilic moieties, i.e., triethylene glycol chains. Such a hybrid material exhibits an outstandingly improved sensing performance compared to pristine rGO such as high sensitivity (31% increase in electrical resistance when humidity is shifted from 2 to 97%), an ultrafast response (25 ms) and recovery in the subsecond timescale, low hysteresis (1.1%), excellent repeatability and stability, as well as high selectivity toward moisture. Such highest-key-performance indicators demonstrate the full potential of two-dimensional (2D) materials when decorated with suitably designed supramolecular receptors to develop the next generation of chemical sensors of any analyte of interest.

Au-Decorated Ce-Ti Mixed Oxides for Efficient CO Preferential Photooxidation

We investigated the photocatalytic behavior of gold nanoparticles supported on CeO2-TiO2 nanostructured matrixes in the CO preferential oxidation in H2-rich stream (photo-CO-PROX), by modifying the electronic band structure of ceria through addition of titania and making it more suitable for interacting with free electrons excited in gold nanoparticles through surface plasmon resonance. CeO2 samples with different TiO2 concentrations (0-20 wt %) were prepared through a slow coprecipitation method in alkaline conditions. The synthetic route is surfactant-free and environmentally friendly. Au nanoparticles (<1.0 wt % loading) were deposited on the surface of the CeO2-TiO2 oxides by deposition-precipitation. A benchmarking sample was also considered, prepared by standard fast coprecipitation, to assess how a peculiar morphology can affect the photocatalytic behavior. The samples appeared organized in a hierarchical needle-like structure, with different morphologies depending on the Ti content and preparation method, with homogeneously distributed Au nanoparticles decorating the Ce-Ti mixed oxides. The morphology influences the preferential photooxidation of CO to CO2 in excess of H2 under simulated solar light irradiation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The Au/CeO2-TiO2 systems exhibit much higher activity compared to a benchmark sample with a non-organized structure. The most efficient sample exhibited CO conversions of 52.9 and 80.2%, and CO2 selectivities equal to 95.3 and 59.4%, in the dark and under simulated sunlight, respectively. A clear morphology-functionality correlation was found in our systematic analysis, with CO conversion maximized for a TiO2 content equal to 15 wt %. The outcomes of this study are significant advancements toward the development of an effective strategy for exploitation of hydrogen as a viable clean fuel in stationary, automotive, and portable power generators.

The role of the capping agent and nanocrystal size in photoinduced hydrogen evolution using CdTe/CdS quantum dot sensitizers

Hydrogen production via light-driven water splitting is a key process in the context of solar energy conversion. In this respect, the choice of suitable light-harvesting units appears as a major challenge, particularly as far as stability issues are concerned. In this work, we report on the use of CdTe/CdS QDs as photosensitizers for light-assisted hydrogen evolution in combination with a nickel bis(diphosphine) catalyst (1) and ascorbate as the sacrificial electron donor. QDs of different sizes (1.7-3.4 nm) and with different capping agents (MPA, MAA, and MSA) have been prepared and their performance assessed in the above-mentioned photocatalytic reaction. Detailed photophysical studies have been also accomplished to highlight the charge transfer processes relevant to the photocatalytic reaction. Hydrogen evolution is observed with remarkable efficiencies when compared to common coordination compounds like Ru(bpy)₃²⁺ (where bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) as light-harvesting units. Furthermore, the hydrogen evolution performance under irradiation is strongly determined by the nature of the capping agent and the QD size and can be related to the concentration of the surface defects within the semiconducting nanocrystal. Overall, the present results outline how QDs featuring large quantum yields and long lifetimes are desirable to achieve sustained hydrogen evolution upon irradiation and that a precise control of the structural and photophysical properties thus appears as a major requirement towards profitable photocatalytic applications.

Nickel-cobalt bimetallic sulfide NiCo2S4 nanostructures for a robust hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media

There are many challenges associated with the fabrication of efficient, inexpensive, durable and very stable nonprecious metal catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we have designed a facile strategy by tailoring the concentration of precursors to successfully obtain nickel–cobalt bimetallic sulfide (NiCo₂S₄) using a simple hydrothermal method. The morphology of the newly prepared NiCo₂S₄ comprised a mixture of microparticles and nanorods, which were few microns in dimension. The crystallinity of the composite sample was found to be excellent with a cubic phase. The sample that contained a higher amount of cobalt compared to nickel and produced single-phase NiCo₂S₄ exhibited considerably improved HER performance. The variation in the salt precursor concentration during the synthesis of a material is a simple methodology to produce a scalable platinum-free catalyst for HER. The advantageous features of the multiple active sites of cobalt in the CN-21 sample as compared to that for pristine CoS and NiS laid the foundation for the provision of abundant active edges for HER. The composite sample produced a current density of 10 mA cm⁻² at an overpotential of 345 mV. Also, it exhibited a Tafel value of 60 mV dec⁻¹, which predominantly ensured rapid charge transfer kinetics during HER. CN-21 was highly durable and stable for 30 hours. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that the charge transfer resistance was 21.88 ohms, which further validated the HER polarization curves and Tafel results. CN-21 exhibited a double layer capacitance of 4.69 μF cm⁻² and a significant electrochemically active surface area of 134.0 cm², which again supported the robust efficiency for HER. The obtained results reveal that our developed NiCo₂S₄ catalyst has a high density of active edges, and it is a non-noble metal catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The present findings provide an alternative strategy and an active nonprecious material for the development of energy-related applications.

There are many challenges associated with the fabrication of efficient, inexpensive, durable and very stable nonprecious metal catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

Water-soluble silicon nanocrystals as NIR luminescent probes for time-gated biomedical imaging

Luminescent probes based on silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have many advantages for bioimaging compared to more conventional quantum dots: abundancy of silicon combined with its biocompatibility; tunability of the emission color of SiNCs in the red and NIR spectral region to gain deeper tissue penetration; long emission lifetimes of SiNCs (hundreds of μs) enabling time-gated acquisitions to avoid background noise caused by tissue autofluorescence and scattered excitation light. Here we report a new three-step synthesis, based on a low temperature thiol-ene click reaction that can afford SiNCs, colloidally stable in water, with preserved bright red and NIR photoluminescence (band maxima at 735 and 945 nm for nanocrystals with diameters of 4 and 5 nm, respectively) and long emission lifetimes. Their luminescence is insensitive to dioxygen and sensitive to pH changes in the physiological range, enabling pH sensing. In vivo studies demonstrated tumor accumulation, 48 hours clearance and a 3-fold improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio compared to steady-state imaging.

Electrochemical Approach for the Production of Layered Double Hydroxides with a Well-Defined Co/MeIII Ratio

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been widely studied for their plethora of fascinating features and applications. The potentiostatic electrodeposition of LDHs has been extensively applied in the literature as a fast and direct method to substitute classical chemical routes. However, the electrochemical approach does not usually allow for a fine control of the M^II /M^III ratio in the synthesized material. By employing a recently proposed potentiodynamic method, LDH films of controlled composition are herein prepared with good reproducibility, using different ratios of the trivalent (Fe or Al) to bivalent (Co) cations in the electrolytic solution. All the obtained materials are shown to be effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts, and are thoroughly characterized by a multi-technique approach, including FE-SEM, XRD, Raman, AES and a wide range of electrochemical procedures.

AC parallel local oxidation of silicon

Here, we present a suitable advancement of parallel local oxidation nanolithography, demonstrating its feasibility in alternate current mode (AC-PLON). For demonstration, we fabricated model structures consisting of an array of parallel nanostripes of electrochemical SiO _x with a controlled roughness. Besides, we proved the repeatability of AC-PLON and its integrability with conventional parallel local oxidation nanolithography.

Self-Powered Photodetectors Based on Core-Shell ZnO-Co3O4 Nanowire Heterojunctions

Self-powered photodetectors operating in the UV-visible-NIR window made of environmentally friendly, earth abundant, and cheap materials are appealing systems to exploit natural solar radiation without external power sources. In this study, we propose a new p-n junction nanostructure, based on a ZnO-Co₃O₄ core-shell nanowire (NW) system, with a suitable electronic band structure and improved light absorption, charge transport, and charge collection, to build an efficient UV-visible-NIR p-n heterojunction photodetector. Ultrathin Co₃O₄ films (in the range 1-15 nm) were sputter-deposited on hydrothermally grown ZnO NW arrays. The effect of a thin layer of the Al₂O₃ buffer layer between ZnO and Co₃O₄ was investigated, which may inhibit charge recombination, boosting device performance. The photoresponse of the ZnO-Al₂O₃-Co₃O₄ system at zero bias is 6 times higher compared to that of ZnO-Co₃O₄. The responsivity ( R) and specific detectivity ( D*) of the best device were 21.80 mA W^-1 and 4.12 × 10¹² Jones, respectively. These results suggest a novel p-n junction structure to develop all-oxide UV-vis photodetectors based on stable, nontoxic, low-cost materials.

Ag2S/MoS2 Nanocomposites Anchored on Reduced Graphene Oxide: Fast Interfacial Charge Transfer for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Hydrogen evolution reaction through electrolysis holds great potential as a clean, renewable, and sustainable energy source. Platinum-based catalysts are the most efficient to catalyze and convert water into molecular hydrogen; however, their large-scale application is prevented by scarcity and cost of Pt. In this work, we propose a new ternary composite of Ag₂S, MoS₂, and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) flakes via a one-pot synthesis. The RGO support assists the growth of two-dimensional MoS₂ nanosheets partially covered by silver sulfides as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Compared with the bare MoS₂ and MoS₂/RGO, the Ag₂S/MoS₂ anchored on the RGO surface (the ternary system Ag₂S/MoS₂/RGO) demonstrated a high catalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Its superior electrochemical activity toward HER is evidenced by the positively shifted (-190 mV vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) overpotential at a current density of -10 mA/cm² and a small Tafel slope (56 mV/dec) compared with a bare and binary system. The Ag₂S/MoS₂/RGO ternary catalyst at an overpotential of -200 mV demonstrated a turnover frequency equal to 0.38 s^-1. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was applied to understand the charge-transfer resistance; the ternary sample shows a very small charge-transfer resistance (98 Ω) at -155 mV vs RHE. Such a large improvement can be attributed to the synergistic effect resulting from the enhanced active site density of both sulfides and to the improved electrical conductivity at the interfaces between MoS₂ and Ag₂S. This ternary catalyst opens up further optimization strategies to design a stable and cheap catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction, which holds great promise for the development of a clean energy landscape.

A robust, modular approach to produce graphene-MOx multilayer foams as electrodes for Li-ion batteries

Major breakthroughs in batteries would require the development of new composite electrode materials, with a precisely controlled nanoscale architecture. However, composites used for energy storage are typically a disordered bulk mixture of different materials, or simple coatings of one material onto another. We demonstrate here a new technique to create complex hierarchical electrodes made of multilayers of vertically aligned nanowalls of hematite (Fe2O3) alternated with horizontal spacers of reduced graphene oxide (RGO), all deposited on a 3D, conductive graphene foam. The RGO nanosheets act as porous spacers, current collectors and protection against delamination of the hematite. The multilayer composite, formed by up to 7 different layers, can be used with no further processing as an anode in Li-ion batteries, with a specific capacity of up to 1175 μA h cm-2 and a capacity retention of 84% after 1000 cycles. Our coating strategy gives improved cyclability and rate capacity compared to conventional bulk materials. Our production method is ideally suited to assemble an arbitrary number of organic-inorganic materials in an arbitrary number of layers.

One-Step Synthesis of Metal/Oxide Nanocomposites by Gas Phase Condensation

Metallic nanoparticles (NPs), either supported on a porous oxide framework or finely dispersed within an oxide matrix, find applications in catalysis, plasmonics, nanomagnetism and energy conversion, among others. The development of synthetic routes that enable to control the morphology, chemical composition, crystal structure and mutual interaction of metallic and oxide phases is necessary in order to tailor the properties of this class of nanomaterials. With this work, we aim at developing a novel method for the synthesis of metal/oxide nanocomposites based on the assembly of NPs formed by gas phase condensation of metal vapors in a He/O₂ atmosphere. This new approach relies on the independent evaporation of two metallic precursors with strongly different oxidation enthalpies. Our goal is to show that the precursor with less negative enthalpy gives birth to metallic NPs, while the other to oxide NPs. The selected case study for this work is the synthesis of a Fe-Co/TiO_x nanocomposite, a system of great interest for its catalytic and magnetic properties. By exploiting the new concept, we achieve the desired target, i.e., a nanoscale dispersion of metallic alloy NPs within titanium oxide NPs, the structure of which can be tailored into TiO_1-δ or TiO₂ by controlling the synthesis and processing atmosphere. The proposed synthesis technique is versatile and scalable for the production of many NPs-assembled metal/oxide nanocomposites.

3D to 2D reorganization of silver-thiol nanostructures, triggered by solvent vapor annealing

Metal-organic composites are of great interest for a wide range of applications. The control of their structure remains a challenge, one of the problems being a complex interplay of covalent and supramolecular interactions. This paper describes the self-assembly, thermal stability and phase transitions of ordered structures of silver atoms and thiol molecules spanning from the molecular to the mesoscopic scale. Building blocks of molecularly defined clusters formed from 44 silver atoms, each particle coated by a monolayer of 30 thiol ligands, are used as ideal building blocks. By changing solvent and temperature it is possible to tune the self-assembled 3D crystals of pristine nanoparticles or, conversely, 2D layered structures, with alternated stacks of Ag atoms and thiol monolayers. The study investigates morphological, chemical and structural stability of these materials between 25 and 300 °C in situ and ex situ at the nanoscale by combining optical and electronic spectroscopic and scattering techniques, scanning probe microscopies and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. The proposed wet-chemistry approach is relatively cheap, easy to implement, and scalable, allowing the fabricated materials with tuned properties using the same building blocks.

Three-dimensional microporous graphene decorated with lithium

Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based architectures can combine the two-dimensional properties of graphene with the high surface-to-volume ratio required for a large variety of technological applications. We present a spectro-microscopy study of stable microporous 3D few-layer graphene structures with a very low density of defects/edges and of unsaturated bonds, as deduced by Raman and core level photoemission spectroscopy. These qualities make these interconnected graphene networks ideal candidates to accommodate lithium adatoms, with a high density of Li per unit volume and a Li uptake per C atom higher than the value observed for graphite, as confirmed by core level photoemission spectroscopy.

Effects of preadipocytes derived from mice fed with high fat diet on the angiogenic potential of endothelial cells

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Obesity promotes a persistent inflammatory process in the adipose tissue, activating the endothelium and leading to vascular dysfunction. Preadipocytes can interact with endothelial cells in a paracrine way stimulating angiogenesis. However, the potential of preadipocytes from adipose tissue of high fat diet (HFD) fed animal to stimulate angiogenesis has not been evaluated yet. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of such diet on the angiogenic potential of preadipocytes in a mice model.

METHODS AND RESULTS

We have evaluated body weight gain, fasting glucose levels and insulin resistance, mRNA expression in preadipocytes and endothelial cells after co-culture with preadipocytes, in vivo vascular function and in vitro endothelial cell migration and tubulogenesis. High fat diet promoted an increase in body weight, glycemic index and insulin resistance in mice. Preadipocytes mRNA expression of factors involved in angiogenesis was higher in these animals. In endothelial tEnd cells mRNA expression of factors involved in vessel growth were higher after co-culture with preadipocytes derived from mice fed with HFD. Although no significant differences were observed in in vivo vasodilatation response between control and HFD groups, endothelial tEnd cells showed an increase in migration and tubulogenesis when cultivated with conditioned media from preadipocytes derived from mice fed with HFD.

CONCLUSION

Hypoxic and growth factors produced by preadipocytes derived from mice fed with HFD have higher capacity than preadipocytes derived from mice fed with standard diet to stimulate the angiogenic potential of endothelial cells, contributing to vascular disorders in obesity.

Biomimetic graphene for enhanced interaction with the external membrane of astrocytes

Graphene and graphene substrates display huge potential as material interfaces for devices and biomedical tools targeting the modulation or recovery of brain functionality. However, to be considered reliable neural interfaces, graphene-derived substrates should properly interact with astrocytes, favoring their growth and avoiding adverse gliotic reactions. Indeed, astrocytes are the most abundant cells in the human brain and they have a crucial physiological role to maintain its homeostasis and modulate synaptic transmission. In this work, we describe a new strategy based on the chemical modification of graphene oxide (GO) with a synthetic phospholipid (PL) to improve interaction of GO with brain astroglial cells. The PL moieties were grafted on GO sheets through polymeric brushes obtained by atom-transfer radical-polymerization (ATRP) between acryloyl-modified PL and GO nanosheets modified with a bromide initiator. The adhesion of primary rat cortical astrocytes on GO-PL substrates increased by about three times with respect to that on glass substrates coated with standard adhesion agents (i.e. poly-d-lysine, PDL) as well as with respect to that on non-functionalized GO. Moreover, we show that astrocytes seeded on GO-PL did not display significant gliotic reactivity, indicating that the material interface did not cause a detrimental inflammatory reaction when interacting with astroglial cells. Our results indicate that the reported biomimetic approach could be applied to neural prosthesis to improve cell colonization and avoid glial scar formation in brain implants. Additionally, improved adhesion could be extremely relevant in devices targeting neural cell sensing/modulation of physiological activity.

Silica-supported silver nanoparticles as an efficient catalyst for aromatic C-H alkylation and fluoroalkylation

The efficient catalysis of oxidative alkylation and fluoroalkylation of aromatic C-H bonds is of paramount importance in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries, and requires the development of convenient Ag0-based nano-architectures with high catalytic activity and recyclability. We prepared Ag-doped silica nanoparticles (Ag0/+@SiO2) with a specific nano-architecture, where ultra-small sized silver cores are immersed in silica spheres, 40 nm in size. The nano-architecture provides an efficient electrochemical oxidation of Ag+@SiO2 without any external oxidant. In turn, Ag+@SiO2 5 mol% results in 100% conversion of arenes into their alkylated and fluoroalkylated derivatives in a single step at room temperature under nanoheterogeneous electrochemical conditions. Negligible oxidative leaching of silver from Ag0/+@SiO2 is recorded during the catalytic coupling of arenes with acetic, difluoroacetic and trifluoroacetic acids, which enables the good recyclability of the catalytic function of the Ag0/+@SiO2 nanostructure. The catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and reused a minimum of five times upon electrochemical regeneration. The use of the developed Ag0@SiO2 nano-architecture as a heterogeneous catalyst facilitates aromatic C-H bond substitution by alkyl and fluoroalkyl groups, which are privileged structural motifs in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) Nanoparticles Containing Thiophene-S,S-dioxide: Tuning of Dimensions, Optical and Redox Properties, and Charge Separation under Illumination

We describe the preparation of poly(3-hexylthiophene-S,S-dioxide) nanoparticles using Rozen's reagent, HOF·CH₃CN, either on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) or on preformed P3HT nanoparticles (P3HT-NPs). In the latter case, core-shell nanoparticles (P3HT@PTDO-NPs) are formed, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, indicating the presence of oxygen on the outer shell. The different preparation modalities lead to a fine-tuning of the chemical-physical properties of the nanoparticles. We show that absorption and photoluminescence features, electrochemical properties, size, and stability of colloidal solutions can be finely modulated by controlling the amount of oxygen present. Atomic force microscopy measurements on the nanoparticles obtained by a nanoprecipitation method from preoxidized P3HT (PTDO-NPs) display spherical morphology and dimensions down to 5 nm. Finally, Kelvin probe measurements show that the coexistence of p- and n-type charge carriers in all types of oxygenated nanoparticles makes them capable of generating and separating charge under illumination. Furthermore, in core-shell nanoparticles, the nanosegregation of the two materials, in different regions of the nanoparticles, allows a more efficient charge separation.

Lipoxin A4 selectively programs the profile of M2 tumor-associated macrophages which favour control of tumor progression

In tumor microenvironments, the macrophage population is heterogeneous, but some macrophages can acquire tumor-promoting characteristics. These tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) exhibit an M2-like profile, with deficient production of NO and ROS, characteristics of pro-inflammatory M1 cytotoxic macrophages. Lipoxins (LX) and 15-epi-lipoxins are lipid mediators which can induce certain features of M2 macrophages in mononuclear cells, but their effects on TAM remain to be elucidated. This study tested the hypothesis that ATL-1, a synthetic analogue of 15-epi-lipoxin A₄ , could modulate TAM activity profile. We show that human macrophages (MΦ) differentiated into TAM-like cells after incubation with conditioned medium from MV3, a human melanoma lineage cell. Contrasting with the effects observed in other M2 subsets and M1 profile macrophages, ATL-1 selectively decreased M2 surface markers in TAM, suggesting unique behavior of this particular M2 subset. Importantly, these results were replicated by the natural lipoxins LXA₄ and the aspirin induced 15-epi-LXA₄ (ATL). In parallel, ATL-1 stimulated TAM to produce NO by increasing the iNOS/arginase ratio and activated NADPH oxidase, triggering ROS production. These alterations in TAM profile induced by ATL-1 led to loss of the anti-apoptotic effects of TAM on melanoma cells and increased their cytotoxic properties. Finally, ATL-1 was found to inhibit tumor progression in a murine model in vivo, which was accompanied by alterations in TAM profile and diminished angiogenesis. Together, the results show an unexpected effect of lipoxin, which induces in TAM a change from an M2- to an M1-like profile, thereby triggering tumor cell apoptosis and down-modulating the tumor progression.

Chemical Vapor Deposited Graphene-Based Derivative As High-Performance Hole Transport Material for Organic Photovoltaics

The development of efficient charge transport layers is a key requirement for the fabrication of efficient and stable organic solar cells. A graphene-based derivative with planar resistivity exceeding 10(5) Ω/□ and work function of 4.9 eV is here produced by finely tuning the parameters of the chemical vapor deposition process on copper. After the growth, the film is transferred to glass/indium tin oxide and used as hole transport layer in organic solar cells based on a PBDTTT-C-T:[70]PCBM blend. Liquid-Phase Exfoliation of Graphite into Single- and Few-Layer Graphene with α-Functionalized Alkanes

Graphene has unique physical and chemical properties, making it appealing for a number of applications in optoelectronics, sensing, photonics, composites, and smart coatings, just to cite a few. These require the development of production processes that are inexpensive and up-scalable. These criteria are met in liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE), a technique that can be enhanced when specific organic molecules are used. Here we report the exfoliation of graphite in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, in the presence of heneicosane linear alkanes terminated with different head groups. These molecules act as stabilizing agents during exfoliation. The efficiency of the exfoliation in terms of the concentration of exfoliated single- and few-layer graphene flakes depends on the functional head group determining the strength of the molecular dimerization through dipole-dipole interactions. A thermodynamic analysis is carried out to interpret the impact of the termination group of the alkyl chain on the exfoliation yield. This combines molecular dynamics and molecular mechanics to rationalize the role of functionalized alkanes in the dispersion and stabilization process, which is ultimately attributed to a synergistic effect of the interactions between the molecules, graphene, and the solvent.

Low-dose estradiol and endothelial and inflammatory biomarkers in menopausal overweight/obese women

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to investigate the effects of low-dose transdermal estrogen on endothelial and inflammatory biomarkers in menopausal overweight/obese women.

METHODS

We recruited 44 menopausal women (47-55 years; body mass index 27.5-34.9 kg/m(2)) and divided them into estradiol (1 mg/day; n = 22) or placebo groups (n = 22). They were double-blinded, followed and treated for 3 months. At baseline and post-intervention, inflammatory biomarkers (hs-CRP, IL-1β, IL-6, MCP-1 and TNF-α) and of vascular injury (activated circulating endothelial cells, CEC-a) and repair (endothelial progenitor cells, EPC) were quantified. Resting CECs (CEC-r) were also assessed. Microvascular reactivity and vasomotion were analyzed by laser-Doppler flowmetry.

RESULTS

Volunteers (51.8 ± 2.3 years; mean body mass index 31.5 ± 2.5 kg/m(2)) had been menopausal for 3 (range 2-5) years. After treatment, no changes were observed in the placebo group, while levels of CEC-r and EPC increased in the estradiol group. In this group, no changes in inflammatory biomarkers were observed but it required a lower cumulative dose of acetylcholine to achieve peak velocity during endothelial-dependent vasodilatation and there was increased endothelial-independent vasodilatation.

CONCLUSIONS

The short-term use of low-dose transdermal estradiol therapy in overweight/obese menopausal women increased markers of vascular repair and improved microvascular reactivity without changing the inflammatory biomarkers.
