Psychosocial factors related to the behavioral intention of people with type 2 diabetes using insulin

OBJECTIVES

to analyze the psychosocial factors correlated with the behavioral intention of people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) towards insulin use.

METHODS

a cross-sectional study; a validated instrument based on the Theory of Planned Behavior was used to identify the direct measures (attitude, subjective norm and perceived control), indirect measures (behavioral, normative and control beliefs) and behavioral intention for the use of insulin. Descriptive analysis and Spearman's correlation were performed for data analysis.

RESULTS

a total of 211 individuals participated in the study, with a positive median of behavioral intention. Attitude, normative and behavioral beliefs were the psychosocial factors that presented a significant correlation (r=0.16, r=-0,15 and r=0.25, respectively; p<0.05) with the intention.

CONCLUSIONS

there is a positive behavioral intention in the use of insulin by people with T2DM. Attitude, normative beliefs and behavioral beliefs have a low magnitude correlation with the intention of people with T2DM to use insulin.

Repercussões das Amputações por Complicações do Pé Diabético

Objetivo: identificar as dimensões da amputação não traumática dos membros inferiores de pessoas com Diabetes Mellitus e investigar o grau de dependência física com limitação. Método: estudo exploratório descritivo, quantitativo, na região do Curimataú Paraibano, com 22 participantes. A coleta de dados ocorreu durante os meses de junho, julho e agosto de 2016, com uso de formulário semi-estruturado elaborado pelos autores, após parecer favorável de número 124.7310. Para análise dos dados se lançou da contribuição estatística através do software SPSS versão 2.0. Os dados foram expostos por meio de tabelas. Resultados: todos com Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2, 56% com Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica associada; maioria idosa do sexo masculino, moram sozinhos e aposentados. Os níveis de amputações maior, a hemipelvectomia em ambos os membros e transfemoral foram as mais encontradas 35,6% do total e amputação menor, pododáctilos, apenas dois participantes. Quanto a dependência 54% são classificados como dependentes. Conclusão:  o nível de dependência encontrado foi dependente, a perda da autonomia é observada com negatividade pelos participantes, o elevado índice de amputação maior, a hemipelvectomia e a transtibial fazem com que o processo de amputação se torne traumático e temido.

[The masculine universe in the home: men's views on the Better at Home Program in BrazilEl universo masculino en el hogar: la visión de los hombres acerca del Programa Mejor en Casa]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the perception of male users of a home care service (Programa Melhor em Casa, PMC) provided by the Unified Health System (SUS) in Brazil regarding the fulfilment of their health needs.

METHOD

The present observational and descriptive study, with qualitative design, was performed with men registered with PMC in Cuité, a municipality located in the state of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil. Ten of 19 men registered with PMC in Cuité were interviewed. Data collection was based on a semi-structured interview with participants. Results were analyzed using Bardin's content analysis of thematic categories.

RESULTS

Three thematic categories were identified: knowledge of participants regarding the health problem for which they were receiving home care; masculine perception regarding the health needs in the home; and perception of participants regarding the advantages of home care. The results showed that the men interviewed were unaware of many important aspects of their health condition, such as the reason for their inclusion in a home care program. Regarding the advantages of PMC, participants mentioned the quick response by health care workers, the avoidance of long waiting lines that are usual in public health care services, and the comfort of the home.

CONCLUSIONS

The acceptance and satisfaction of users with PMC was remarkable. However, a high level of unawareness regarding the participants' own health needs was observed. Additional studies are required to broaden the discussion regarding home care.
