Evaluating the risk of malignancies of the diagnostic categories proposed by the World Health Organization System for Reporting Lung Cytopathology: a two-year single institutional experience. Abstract
Introduction The WHO System of Reporting Lung Cytopathology proposed a 5-tiered system in 2023. We report the risk of malignancies (ROMs) of bronchial washing/lavage and percutaneous fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens. We also evaluated the change of ROMs when image correlation is required. Methods Lung cytology cases in 2021 and 2022 with histologic follow-up were included. CT reports were reviewed to identify cases with a solid nodule/tumor but benign cytological findings. These were reassigned from the "Benign" to "Non-diagnostic" category, and the ROMs were re-estimated. Results A total of 1031 bronchial washing/lavage and 206 FNAs were identified. The ROMs of bronchial washing/lavage were "Non-diagnostic" 56.5% (13/23), "Benign" 41.9% (320/764), "Atypical" 71.7% (71/99), "Suspicious for malignancy" 94.7% (72/76), and "Malignant" 100% (70/70). The ROMs of FNAs were "Non-diagnostic" 66% (33/50), "Benign" 58.2% (39/67), "Atypical" 70% (28/40), "Suspicious for malignancy" 96.2% (25/26), and "Malignant" 100% (70/70). When image finding was considered, cases initially assigned as "Benign" were re-classified to "Non-diagnostic" with decreases in ROMs for the "Benign " category. Conclusions Malignancy risks associated with the WHO System of Reporting Lung Cytopathology diagnostic groups were reported. Image correlation for the "Benign" category led to a decrease in case number and ROM.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality in Taiwan. With rapid advancement of targeted therapeutics in non-small cell lung cancers, next-generation sequencing (NGS) is becoming an important tool for biomarker testing. In this study, we describe institutional experience of NGS analysis in non-small cell carcinoma (NSCLC). Materials and Methods: A cohort of 73 cases was identified from the institutional pathology archive in the period between November 2020 and December 2022. Results: Adenocarcinoma was the most common histologic type (91.8%). Most patients presented with stage IIIB and beyond (87.7%). Twenty-nine patients (39.7%) were evaluated at the time of initial diagnosis, while the others had received prior chemotherapy or targeted therapy. The most frequently mutated gene was EGFR (63%), and this was followed by TP53 (50.7%), KRAS (13.7%), RB1 (13.7%), and CDKN2A (13.7%). Clinically actionable mutations associated with a guideline-suggested targeted therapy were identified in 55 cases (75.3%) overall, and in 47.1% of cases excluding EGFR TKI-sensitizing mutation. Biomarkers other than EGFR TKI-sensitizing mutations were compared. Cases without TKI-sensitizing EGFR mutation had more level 1 or 2 biomarkers (excluding EGFR TKI-sensitizing mutations) than cases with TKI-sensitizing EGFR mutations (47.1% versus 20.1%, p = 0.016). Progressive disease was associated with co-occurrence of clinically actionable mutations (20.5% versus 0%, p < 0.05). Eight of the nine cases with co-occurring actionable genetic alternations had an EGFR mutation. After an NGS test, 46.1% of actionable or potentially actionable genetic alternations led to patients receiving a matched therapy. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that NGS analysis identifies therapeutic targets and may guide treatment strategies in NSCLC. NGS tests may be advantageous over multiple single-gene tests for optimization of treatment plans, especially for those with non-EGFR mutations or those with progressive disease.

Abstract
In Taiwan, the pesticides dimethomorph and imidacloprid are recommended for pest control in vineyards. Therefore, tank-mixing of these two pesticides is usually a routine practice before application. This study analyzed the influence of vineyard soil microbial flora under the recommended and high dosages (100 times the recommended dosage) of dimethomorph and imidacloprid. Individual and combined applications of pesticides were also tested through batches of soil incubation experiments. Four treatments-control (C), dimethomorph (DT), imidacloprid (IM), and mixed application of dimethomorph and imidacloprid (ID)-were used in the experimental design. From the soil metabolism, no significant reaction was observed after 2 months in the recommended dosage group, regardless of whether the pesticides were being applied individually or combined. For the high dosage, imidacloprid showed a higher effect than the co-exposure treatments, showing a possible prolonged effect after its repetitive application. From PCoA analysis, pesticide treatments altered the soil ecology after 2 months, and the effect of imidacloprid can be explicitly observed at high dosages. At the phylum level, Acidobacteria can indicate pesticide application around the recommended dosage. It was inhibited by ID on day 7 and was augmented by all pesticides on day 63. The effect of the recommended dosage of pesticide mixtures after 2 months of incubation was revealed in the minor families Gemmataceae and Pirellulaceae, while the high dosage treatments affected both the core and the minor families. Our findings verified the changes in the composition of microbial communities upon pesticide application, which would affect carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorous cycles, and contaminant removal ability within the vineyard.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop an efficient bioinoculant for amelioration of adverse effects from chilling stress (10°C), which are frequently occurred during rice seedling stage. Seed germination bioassay under chilling condition with rice (Oryza sativa L.) cv. Tainan 11 was performed to screen for plant growth-promoting (PGP) bacteria among 41 chilling-tolerant rice endophytes. And several agronomic traits were used to evaluate the effects of bacterial inoculation on rice seedling, which were experienced for 7-d chilling stress in walk-in growth chamber. The field trials were further used to verify the performance of potential PGP endophytes on rice growth. A total of three endophytes with multiple PGP traits were obtained. It was demonstrated that Pseudomonas sp. CC-LS37 inoculation led to 18% increase of maximal efficiency of Photosystem II (PSII) after 7-d chilling stress and 7% increase of chlorophyll a content, and 64% decline of malondialdehyde content in shoot after 10-d recovery at normal temperature in walk-in growth chamber. In field trial, biopriming of seeds with strain CC-LS37 caused rice plants to increase shoot chlorophyll soil plant analysis development values (by 2.9% and 2.5%, respectively) and tiller number (both by 61%) under natural climate and chilling stress during the end of tillering stage, afterward 30% more grain yield was achieved. In conclusion, strain CC-LS37 exerted its function in increase of tiller number of chilling stress-treated rice seedlings via improvement of photosynthetic characteristics, which in turn increases the rice grain yield. This study also proposed multiple indices used in the screening of potential endophytes for conferring chilling tolerance of rice plants.

Abstract
Background Some studies have indicated that the use of prokinetic agents may reduce pneumonia risk in some populations. Nasogastric tube insertion is known to increase the risk of pneumonia because it disrupts lower esophageal sphincter function. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether prokinetic agents could protect long-term nasogastric tube-dependent patients in Taiwan from being hospitalized for pneumonia. Methods A case-crossover study design was applied in this study. Long-term nasogastric tube-dependent patients who had a first-time admission to a hospital due to pneumonia from 1996 to 2013 that was recorded in the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were included. The case period was set to be 30 days before admission, and two control periods were selected for analysis. Prokinetic agent use during those three periods was then assessed for the included patients. Conditional logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) for pneumonia admission with the use of prokinetic agents. Results A total of 639 first-time hospitalizations for pneumonia among patients with long-term nasogastric tube dependence were included. After adjusting the confounding factors for pneumonia, no negative association between prokinetic agent use and pneumonia hospitalization was found, and the adjusted OR was 1.342 (95% CI 0.967–1.86). In subgroup analysis, the adjusted ORs were 1.401 (0.982–1.997), 1.256 (0.87–1.814), 0.937 (0.607–1.447) and 2.222 (1.196–4.129) for elderly, stroke, diabetic and parkinsonism patients, respectively. Conclusion Prokinetic agent use had no negative association with pneumonia admission among long-term nasogastric tube-dependent patients in Taiwan.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Endometriosis-associated epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a specific category of EOC, containing either endometrioid or clear cell carcinoma subtype. The characteristic of endometriosis-associated EOC includes an early stage at the diagnosis, presence of single histology type, and better prognosis. The synchronous two subtypes of endometriosis-associated EOC and presentation of far-advanced stage status at the initial diagnosis is rarely reported. CASE REPORT We reported a 60-year-old postmenopausal woman with FIGO IA endometriosis-associated endometrioid carcinoma at right ovary and FIGO IVA endometriosis-associated clear cell carcinoma at left ovary, right tube, omentum, lymph node and cytology of pleural effusion and ascites treated with optimal debulking surgery and dose-intensity taxane/platinum based chemotherapy. CONCLUSION This case report confirms the long-term concept that clear cell carcinoma has much more aggressive behavior than endometrioid cell carcinoma does, regardless of association of endometriosis or not.

Effects of Hospice Care for Terminal Head and Neck Cancer Patients: A Nationwide Population-Based Matched Cohort Study. J Palliat Med 2021; 24:1299-1306. Abstract
Background: Head and neck cancer was the fourth-most common cause of cancer death among Taiwanese men in 2018. Hospice care has been proven to reduce the use of invasive medical interventions and expenditures in caring for cancer patients. Aim: This study examined the effects of hospice care for terminal head and neck cancer patients. Design: A matched cohort study was used to compare the use of invasive interventions and expenditures among hospice care and nonhospice care patients. Setting/Participants: The investigated patients consisted of patients who died of head and neck cancer in Taiwan from 2004 to 2013 and were included in the Registry for Catastrophic Illness Patients in Taiwan and the Taiwan National Health Research Insurance Database. Results: A total of 45,948 terminal head and neck cancer patients were identified, and 9883 patients remained in each group after matching for comorbidities. After that matching, the rates of intensive care unit admission (23.9% vs. 38.94%, p < 0.0001), endotracheal intubation (10.05% vs. 31.32%, p < 0.0001), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (2.93% vs. 20.18%, p < 0.0001), defibrillation (0.51% vs. 4.36%. p < 0.0001), ventilator use (21.92% vs. 46.47%, p < 0.0001), blood transfusion (71.25% vs. 73.45%, p = 0.006), and hemodialysis (1.06% vs. 3.26%. p < 0.0001) were significantly lower in the hospice group than the nonhospice group, although the rates of parenteral nutrition for the two groups were similar (7.74% vs. 7.97%, p = 0.5432). The mean medical expenditure per person in the six months before death was 460,531 New Taiwan Dollar (NTD) for the nonhospice group and 389,079 NTD for those provided hospice care for more than three months, which was the lowest amount among various hospice enrollment durations. Conclusions: Hospice care can effectively reduce the use of invasive medical interventions in caring for terminal head and neck cancer patients and may improve their quality of death. Moreover, hospice care enrollment for more than three months can save on unnecessary medical expenditures for terminal head and neck cancer patients.

Frequency, Recognition, and Potential Risk Factors of Incidental Findings on Trauma Computed Tomography Scans: A Cross-Sectional Study at an Urban Level One Trauma Center. Abstract
Background Computed tomography (CT) use in injured patients has continuously increased in the past decades. We designed and undertook this study to evaluate the frequency, and potential risks of incidental findings (IFs), and how they were processed in trauma patients receiving CT scans. Methods We retrospectively reviewed CT scans, official CT reports, and basic demographics in trauma patients who received CT scans at our emergency department in 2016. Scans with IFs prompted a detailed review of medical records to determine clinical significance and how they were processed. IFs were classified into three categories: category I (potentially severe condition, in-time management required), category II (not urgent, follow-up needed), and category III (of minor concern). Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted to determine patient characteristics associated with IFs. Results In the 4,092 scans enrolled, IFs were identified in 649 (15.9%). There were 13 (2.0%) category I, 306 (47.2%) category II, and 330 (50.8%) category III IFs. Patients with IFs were older than those without. No sex-based difference was found. Most (61.5%) of the scans were performed for the head; however, the abdomen had the highest IF prevalence (26.2%). Documentation about IFs was poor; 31% of category I, 91.9% of category II, and 97.0% of category III have no related record. Old age remains the risk predicting the presence of IFs, and every year of increasing age was independently associated with a higher prevalence of IFs (OR: 1.019; 95% CI: 1.015-1.024). Conclusions IFs are common in trauma CT scans; however, recognition and management remain poor. Abdomen and chest scans, and CT in older patients should remind us of increasing risks of IFs.

Abstract
Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is rare but highly aggressive. We investigated the association of selected driver mutations, including BRAF, RAS, PIK3CA, TERT promoter, TP53, POLE, and mismatch repair deficiency (MMR-D) with the clinicopathological features of ATC to identify prognostic and predictive biomarkers. Thirty-nine retrospective cases from pathology archives were enrolled for clinicopathology analysis and immunohistochemistry, and 27 cases had sufficient specimens for further molecular testing using targeted next-generation sequencing and mass spectrometry. BRAFV600E and RAS mutations were identified in 25.9% and 40.7% of ATC, respectively. BRAFV600E mutation was significantly associated with coexisting papillary thyroid carcinoma (p = 0.009) and RAS mutations with female gender (p = 0.012). In univariant analysis, the non-BRAF/RAS tumors were significantly associated with the presence of a sarcomatoid pattern (p = 0.045). PIK3CA, TERT promoter, and TP53 mutations were identified in 14.8%, 81.5%, and 70.4% of cases, respectively. No MMR-D or POLE mutations were detected. In survival analyses, RAS and PIK3CA mutations were significantly associated with inferior outcomes (p = 0.03 and p = 0.006, respectively). In conclusion, driver mutations in ATC are associated with distinct clinicopathological features. RAS and PIK3CA mutations were negative predictors for patient survival. Emerging therapeutic agents targeting BRAF, RAS, and PI3 kinase may benefit a substantial proportion of ATC patients.

Abstract
The visible spectrum of solar radiation is known to stimulate photoheterotrophic bacterial carbon metabolism. However, its impact on 'strictly' heterotrophic bacteria remains less explored. Here, we show that heterotrophic flavobacteria exhibit enhanced uptake and mineralization of dissolved organic carbon with increasing wavelengths of visible light, without employing any 'known' light-harvesting mechanisms. RNA sequencing identified blue light as a major constraint in the extracellular enzymatic hydrolysis of polymeric carbohydrates and acquisition of sugars, despite acting as a stimulus for inorganic carbon sequestration. In contrast, green-red and continuous full-spectrum lights activated diverse hydrolytic enzymes and sugar transporters, but obstructed inorganic carbon fixation. This 'metabolic switching' was apparent through limited nutrient uptake, suppressed light-sensitivity, oxidative stress response and promotion of inorganic carbon sequestration pathways under blue light. The visible light impact on metabolism may be of significant ecological relevance as it appears to promote cell-mediated mineralization of organic carbon in 'green-colored' chlorophyll-rich copiotrophic coastal seawater and inorganic carbon sequestration in 'blue-colored' oligotrophic open ocean. Thus, a novel regulatory role played by light on heterotrophic metabolism and a hidden potential of flavobacteria to sense and respond differentially to monochromatic lights influencing marine carbon cycling were unraveled.

Abstract
Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are beneficial microbes that increase plant growth and yield. However, limited information is currently available on PGPB in onion (Allium cepa Linn.). The aims of the present study were to isolate and identify PGPB in onion and examine the effects of isolated PGPB on germination and growth during the vegetative stage in onion, pak choy (Brassica chinensis), and sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum). Twenty-three strains of PGPB were isolated from the roots, bulbs, and rhizosphere soil of onion. All isolated bacterial strains showed one or more PGP traits, including indole acetic acid production, phosphate solubilization ability, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase and nitrogenase activities; most of these traits were derived from Bacillus sp., Microbacterium sp., and Pseudomonas sp. Eight bacteria that exhibited strong abilities to produce indole acetic acid were selected for a Petri dish trial, soil pot test, and vermiculate pot test. The Petri dish trial showed that strains ORE8 and ORTB2 simultaneously increased radicle and hypocotyl lengths in onion, but inhibited growth in sweet pepper after 7 d. The soil pot experiment on onion revealed that strains ORE5, ORE8, and ORTB2 strongly promoted growth during the vegetative stage with only a half dose of chemical fertilizer. The present results indicate that ORE8 (Bacillus megaterium) and ORTB2 (Pantoea sp.) are the most promising biofertilizers of onion and may simultaneously inhibit the seedling growth of other plants.

Screening and Assessment of Potential Plant Growth-promoting Bacteria Associated with <i>Allium cepa</i> Linn. Microbes Environ 2020; 35. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Members of the Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) have been isolated from various environmental and clinical samples and reportedly pose a threat to human health. Here we examine the draft genome sequence of Burkholderia sp. LS-044, an antibiotic-resistant endophytic strain affiliated to the Bcc (ST895) inhabiting rice (Oryza sativa ssp. japonica cv. Tainung 71) root. METHODS Antimicrobial susceptibility of LS-044 was evaluated comparatively with other Burkholderia sp. (CC-Al74 and CC-3XP9) using commercial ATB PSE 5 test strips. The genome of LS-044 was sequenced using an Illumina MiSeq platform. Plant probiotic and antimicrobial resistance genes were screened by Rapid Annotation using Subsystem Technology (RAST), CARD 2017, NCBI and/or UniProt. RESULTS Plant-associated members of Bcc (LS-044 and CC-Al74) exhibited greater resistance to the majority of antibiotics tested. The draft genome sequence of LS-044 contained 8.78 Mbp in 62 contigs having a G + C content of 66.5%, 8868 coding sequences and 75 RNAs. The genome harboured genes coding for LysR-type β-lactamase transcription regulator, classes A, C and D β-lactamases, several metal-dependent β-lactamases, antibiotic efflux proteins, and proteins conferring resistance to colistin, streptothricin, colicin and fluoroquinolones. Similarly, it also possessed genes for copper homeostasis, copper-cobalt-zinc-cadmium-chromium resistance and reduction of mercury. Genes involved in flagellar motility, hydrolysis of murein and chitin, production of siderophore and auxin, and metabolism of aromatic compounds were also found. CONCLUSION Genome sequence data revealed an interlinked occurrence of plant probiotic traits and antimicrobial resistance in the rice root endophyte LS-044.

Abstract
Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is an aggressive malignant tumor composed of undifferentiated thyroid follicular cells. Pathological diagnosis of ATC can be challenging as the tumor may show morphological overlap with other neoplasms with anaplastic morphology. Immunohistochemical demonstration of thyroid origin facilitates the diagnosis of ATC. Previous studies using the polyclonal anti-PAX8 antibody 10336-1-AP suggested that PAX8 was the most sensitive marker, expressed in up to 80% of ATC. According to a 2018 NordiQC report, the monoclonal anti-PAX8 antibody MRQ-50 has become the most commonly used anti-PAX8 antibody worldwide. However, validation of this antibody in ATC is lacking. In this study, we recruited 182 ATC cases from seven institutions. Pathology slides were subjected to histology review. PAX8 immunohistochemistry using the MRQ-50 antibody was performed in whole tissue slides (n = 147) or tissue microarray sections (n = 35). We found PAX8 expression in 54.4% of the cases, which was significantly lower than those reported in prior studies with the polyclonal antibody. PAX8 expression was positively correlated with the presence of an epithelial pattern (63.6% vs 37.5%, p = 0.0008) and a coexisting differentiated thyroid carcinoma component (71.6% vs 44.3%, p = 0.0004), but was not associated with age, gender, specimen type, or presence of giant cell and sarcomatoid patterns. In conclusion, we demonstrated PAX8 expression using the monoclonal antibody MRQ-50 in only half of the cases in a large ATC series. Pathologists should be aware that PAX8 expression in ATC is less than those reported in early studies to avoid misdiagnosis.

Abstract
Here we present the complete genome sequence of Siansivirga zeaxanthinifaciens CC-SAMT-1T, a flavobacterium isolated from coastal surface seawater. A 3.3Mb genome revealed remarkable specialization of this bacterium particularly in the degradation of sulfated polysaccharides available as detritus or in dissolved phase. Besides utilizing high molecular weight organic biopolymers, this strain appears to accomplish assimilatory sulfate reduction, sulfide oxidation, and acquisition and inter-conversion of inorganic carbon. Genes encoding zeaxanthin and three different kinds of DNA photolyase/cryptochrome (senses blue light) were present, while genes that code for blue light sensing BLUF domain proteins and red/far-red light sensing phytochromes were absent. Furthermore, CC-SAMT-1T lacked the rhodopsin photosystem and all other genes that confer any other known forms of phototrophy. The genomic data revealed that CC-SAMT-1T is highly adapted to sulfur-rich coastal environments, where it most likely contributes to marine carbon and sulfur cycles by metabolizing sulfated polysaccharides as well as inorganic sulfur.

Abstract
A polyphasic taxonomic approach was used to characterize a presumably novel bacterium, designated strain CC-YTH191T, isolated from a fermented meal in Taiwan. Cells of strain CC-YTH191T were Gram-stain-negative aerobic rods, which grew at 15-40 °C (optimal 25-30 °C), pH 6.0-9.0 (optimal 7.0) and 1-2 % (w/v) NaCl (optimal 1 %). On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain CC-YTH191T appeared to belong to the genus Castellaniella, and was closely related to Castellaniella hirudinis (96.7 % similarity), Castellaniella ginsengisoli (96.7 %) and Castellaniella caeni (96.0 %), while with other related species it shared <96.0 % similarity. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were C16 : 0, C17 : 0cyclo, C14 : 0 3OH/C16 : 1iso I and C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, three unidentified phospholipids, an unidentified aminolipid and an unidentified aminophospholpid. Putrescine was the predominant polyamine followed by spermidine. The DNA G+C content was 62.2 mol% and the predominant quinone system was ubiquinone 8 (Q-8). All these features confirmed the placement of the strain CC-YTH191T as a novel species within the genus Castellaniella, for which the name Castellaniella fermenti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-YTH191T (=BCRC 81023T=JCM 31755T).

Abstract
A polyphasic approach was used to characterize an aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterium (designed as strain CC-MHH0539T) isolated from the chopped tuber of taro (Colocasia esculanta) in Taiwan. Strain CC-MHH0539T was able to grow at 15-30 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum, 7.0) and with 0-1 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain CC-MHH0539T showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Sphingomonas laterariae LNB2T (96.8 %), Sphingobium boeckii 469T (96.5 %), Sphingomonas faucium E62-3T (96.4 %) and Sphingosinicella vermicomposti YC7378T (96.2 %) and <96.1 % similarity to other sphingomonads. Strain CC-MHH0539T was found to cluster mainly with the clade that accommodated members of the genus Sphingomonas. The dominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω5c, C14 : 0 2-OH, C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c and C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c. Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, two sphingoglycolipids and two unidentified phospholipids were detected in strain CC-MHH0539T. The DNA G+C content was 69.5 mol%. The respiratory quinone system and predominant polyamine was ubiquinone 10 (Q-10) and sym-homospermidine, respectively, which is in line with Sphingomonas representatives. Based on the distinct phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic traits, strain CC-MHH0539T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas colocasiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-MHH0539T (=BCRC 80933T=JCM 31229T).

Abstract
Adult bacterial meningitis (ABM) caused by non-Pseudomonas (Ps.) aeruginosa Pseudomonas (NPAP) species infection has rarely been reported. The clinical characteristics of 52 cases of Pseudomonas ABM (11 NPAP- and 41 Ps. aeruginosa-related meningitis) collected during a 30-year study period (1986-2015) were included. Eleven cases of NPAP ABM were identified in the literature, and their clinical data were also collected. Therefore, a total of 22 NPAP ABM cases were enrolled. The clinical characteristics of the NPAP ABM and Ps. aeruginosa ABM groups were compared. Of the implicated NPAP strains, Ps. putida and Ps. stutzeri were the most common (7 cases each), followed by Ps. mendocina in 4, Ps. fluorescens in 1, Ps. fulva in 1, Ps. alcaligenes in 1, and Ps. mosselii in 1. Of the 22 cases, 50% (11/22) had an underlying postneurosurgical state. Fever (77.3%, 17/22) and altered consciousness (45.5%, 10/22) were the most common clinical presentations. Antibiotic non-susceptibility was found in 3 strains of Ps. putida and 1 Ps. mosselii strain. Compared to the patients with Ps. aeruginosa ABM, those with NPAP ABM had a higher incidence of spontaneous infections and a better survival rate. In conclusion, although Ps. putida, Ps. stutzeri and Ps. mendocina were the major implicated strains of NPAP ABM, the clinical characteristics of this specific group of ABM demonstrated marked heterogeneity. Even though the cases with NPAP ABM had better therapeutic results than those with Ps. aeruginosa ABM, further large-scale studies are needed to better delineate this specific group of ABM.

A polyphasic approach was used to characterize a presumably novel bacterium, designated strain CC-KYC063T, isolated from a compost sample collected at a greenhouse facility within Taiwan. Strain CC-KYC063T was Gram-stain-negative and aerobic, able to grow at 15-37 °C (optimal 30 °C), at pH 7.0-9.0 (optimal pH 7.0) and with 0-2 % (w/v) NaCl. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain CC-KYC063T showed highest similarity to Olivibacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 060T (96.2 %) and Olivibacter terrae Jip13T (95.5 %). The DNA G+C content was 43.0 mol% and the predominant quinone system was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The polyamine pattern showed a predominance of sym-homospermidine. The major fatty acids found in strain CC-KYC063T were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and C16 : 1ω6c/C16 : 1ω7c. Based on the distinct phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic traits together with results of comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain CC-KYC063T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Olivibacter, for which the name Olivibacter composti sp. nov. is proposed. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain CC-YTH161T appeared to belong to the genus Humibacter, and was closely related to Humibacter antri D7-27T (96.6 % similarity) and Humibacter ginsengiterrae DCY60T (96.2 %). The DNA G+C content was 67.0 mol% and the predominant quinone system was menaquinones (MK) 11 and 12. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c. The polar lipid profile comprised predominant amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol followed by two unidentified co-migrating glycolipids and phosphatidylglycerol in significant amounts. The diagnostic diamino acid was 2,4-diaminobutyric acid. All these features confirmed the placement of strain CC-YTH161T within the genus Humibacter. On the basis of evidence from this study, strain CC-YTH161T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Humibacter, for which the name Humibacter aquilariae sp. nov. is proposed. Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, yellow-pigmented, flexirubin-producing, rod-shaped and endophytic bacterium, designated strain CC-YTH209T, was isolated from a maize leaf and subjected to a taxonomic study. Strain CC-YTH209T was found to grow at 15-40 °C (optimal 30 °C), at pH 6.0-8.0 (optimal pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0-2 % (optimal 1 %) (w/v) NaCl. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain CC-YTH209T appeared to belong to the genus Chryseobacterium within the class Flavobacteriia, and was closely related to Chryseobacterium rigui CJ16T (97.5 % similarity) and Chryseobacterium taeanense PHA3-4T (96.9 %). The level of DNA-DNA relatedness between strain CC-YTH209T and Chryseobacterium rigui CJ16T was 14.4 % (reciprocal, 13.0 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes revealed a distinct taxonomic position attained by strain CC-YTH209T within the clade that accommodated Chryseobacterium species. The DNA G+C content was 37.2 mol%. Strain CC-YTH209T contained menaquinone MK-6 as the predominant respiratory quinone and sym-homospermidine as the major polyamine. The major cellular fatty acids of the isolate were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and C16 : 1ω6c/C16 : 1ω7c. The polar lipid profile comprised phosphatidylethanolamine and five aminolipids, three lipids, one glycolipid, one aminophospholipid and one phospholipid, which are presently uncharacterized. On the basis of evidence presented in this study, strain CC-YTH209T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium, for which the name Chryseobacterium endophyticum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-YTH209T (=BCRC 80938T=JCM 31226T).

Abstract
An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod or spiral-shaped diazotrophic bacterium (designated strain CC-LY788T), was isolated from agricultural soil in Taiwan. Strain CC-LY788T was able to grow at 25–40 °C, pH 6.0–8.0 and tolerated NaCl to 2.0% (w/v). Positive for nitrogen fixation with the activity recorded as 6.5 nmol ethylene h− 1. Strain CC-LY788T showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Azospirillum picis DSM 19922T (97.2%) and Azospirillum rugosum DSM 19657T (97.1%) and lower sequence similarities ( < 96.6%) to all other species of the genus Azospirillum. According to the DNA–DNA hybridization, the relatedness values of strain CC-LY788T with A. picis DSM 19922T and A. rugosum DSM 19657T were 51.1 ± 5.5% and 46.8 ± 2.1%, respectively. Strain CC-LY788T was positive for the rapid identification of the genus-specific primer set. The respiratory quinone system was ubiquinone (Q-10) and the DNA G+C content was 69.8 mol%. The major fatty acids found in strain CC-LY788T were C16 : 0, C18 : 1 2-OH, C14 : 0 3-OH/C16 : 1 iso I (summed feature 2), C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c (summed feature 3), C18 : 0 ante/C18 : 2ω6,9c (summed feature 5) and C18 : 1ω7c/C18 : 1ω6c (summed feature 8). Based on the phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain CC-LY788T represents a novel species of the genus Azospirillum, for which the name Azospirillum soli sp. nov. is proposed. Abstract
A novel yellow-pigmented, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, designated strain CC-MF41T, was isolated from rhizosphere soil of maize (Zea mays) collected in Wufeng District, Taichung, Taiwan. Strain CC-MF41T exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 97.5, 97.3, 97.2 and 97.1 % to Leucobacter chironomi MM2LBT (and ‘Leucobacter kyeonggiensis’ F3-P9 and ‘L. humi’ Re-6, the names of which have not been validly published), Leucobacter tardus K70/01T, L. komagatae IFO 15245T and ‘Leucobacter margaritiformis’ A23. However, CC-MF41T and ‘L. margaritiformis’ A23 formed a loosely bound phylogenetic lineage (with a low bootstrap value) associated with species of the genus Leucobacter. In DNA–DNA reassociation experiments, the relatedness of strain CC-MF41T to L. chironomi DSM 19883T was 57.1 % (reciprocal value 29.1 %). The DNA G+C content of strain CC-MF41T was 72.1 mol% and the cell-wall peptidoglycan contained 2,4-diaminobutyric acid, alanine, glycine, glutamic acid and threonine. The major menaquinone was MK-11 and the predominant fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The polar lipid profile of strain CC-MF41T contained major amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol followed by an unidentified glycolipid, phosphatidylglycerol and an unknown phospholipid. Based on its phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic distinctiveness, strain CC-MF41T represents a novel species of Leucobacter, for which the name Leucobacter zeae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-MF41T ( = BCRC 80515T = LMG 27265T).

Abstract
The major mission of the ovarian follicle is the timely production of the mature fertilizable oocyte, and this is achieved by gonadotropin-regulated, gap junction-mediated cell-cell communication between the oocyte and surrounding nurturing granulosa cells. We have demonstrated that FSH and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) stimulate Gja1 gene-encoded connexin43 (Cx43) gap junction formation/function in rat ovarian granulosa cells is important for their induction of steroidogenesis; additionally, cAMP-protein kinase A (PKA)- and calcium-calcineurin-sensitive cAMP response element-binding (CREB) coactivator CRTC2 plays a crucial role during steroidogenesis. This study was to explore the potential molecular mechanism whereby FSH and TGFβ1 regulate Cx43 synthesis and degradation, particularly the involvement of CRTC2 and ubiquitin ligase Nedd4. Primary culture of granulosa cells from ovarian antral follicles of gonadotropin-primed immature rats was used. At 48 h post-treatment, FSH plus TGFβ1 increased Cx43 level and gap junction function in a PKA- and calcineurin-dependent manner, and TGFβ1 acting through its type I receptor modulated FSH action. Chromatin-immunoprecipitation analysis reveals FSH induced an early-phase (45 min) and FSH+TGFβ1 further elicited a late-phase (24 h) increase in CRTC2, CREB and CBP binding to the Gja1 promoter. Additionally, FSH+TGFβ1 increased the half-life of hyper-phosphorylated Cx43 (Cx43-P2). Also, the proteasome inhibitor MG132 prevented the brefeldin A (blocker of protein transport through Golgi)-reduced Cx43-P2 level and membrane Cx43 gap junction plaque. This is associated with FSH+TGFβ1-attenuated Cx43 interaction with Nedd4 and Cx43 ubiquitination. In all, this study uncovers that FSH and TGFβ1 upregulation of Cx43 gap junctions in ovarian granulosa cells critically involves enhancing CRTC2/CREB/CBP-mediated Cx43 expression and attenuating ubiquitin ligase Nedd4-mediated proteosomal degradation of Cx43 protein.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-positive, endospore-forming rod (designated strain CC-LY275T) was isolated from a pesticide wastewater sample. The isolate grew at a temperature 20-45 °C, at pH 7.0-8.0 and tolerated NaCl 6 % (w/v). The most closely related strains in terms of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity were Bacillus horneckiae (97.1 %) and Bacillus oceanisediminis (96.8 %), respectively. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 37.9 mol%. Strain CC-LY275T was determined to possess iso-C14 : 0, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 as predominant fatty acids. The major polar lipid profile consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid; menaquinone (MK-7) was the predominant respiratory quinone. According to the distinct phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic properties, the name Bacillus formosensis sp. nov. (type strain CC-LY275T = BCRC 80443T = JCM 18448T) is proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, flexirubin-producing bacterium, designated strain CC-CZW010T, was isolated from the edible sea urchin Tripneustes gratilla in Penghu Island, Taiwan. The isolate grew optimally at pH 7.0 and 30 °C in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. The most closely related strains in terms of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity were Chryseobacterium taihuense NBRC 108747T (97.6 %) and Chryseobacterium aquaticum KCTC 12483T (96.7 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a distinct taxonomic position attained by strain CC-CZW010T with respect to other species of the genus Chryseobacterium. Strain CC-CZW010T possessed iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH, summed feature 3 (comprising C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c) and summed feature 9 (comprising C16 : 0 10-methyl/iso-C17 : 1ω9c) as predominant fatty acids. The major polar lipid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified lipids and five aminolipids. The polyamine pattern contained the major compound sym-homospermidine. Menaquinone 6 (MK-6) was the predominant respiratory quinone, and the G+C content of the genomic DNA was 36.4 mol%. According to distinct phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain CC-CZW010T represents a novel species of the genus Chryseobacterium, for which the name Chryseobacterium echinoideorum sp. nov. is proposed. A Gram-stain-variable, short-rod-shaped, endospore-forming, strictly aerobic, non-motile, chitinolytic and endophytic bacterium, designated strain CC-Alfalfa-19T, exhibiting unusual bipolar appendages was isolated from a root nodule of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in Taiwan and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain CC-Alfalfa-19T was found to be most closely related to Paenibacillus puldeungensis CAU 9324T (95.2 %), whereas other species of the genus Paenibacillus shared ≤ 95.0 % sequence similarity. The phylogenetic analysis revealed a distinct phyletic lineage established by strain CC-Alfalfa-19T with respect to other species of the genus Paenibacillus. Fatty acids comprised predominantly anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. Menaquinone 7 (MK-7) was identified as the sole respiratory quinone and the genomic DNA G+C content was 42.7 mol%. Polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified glycolipid and an unidentified lipid. The diagnostic diamino acid found in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Based on the polyphasic taxonomic evidence that was in line with the genus Paenibacillus and additional distinguishing characteristics, strain CC-Alfalfa-19T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Paenibacillus medicaginis sp. nov. (type strain CC-Alfalfa-19T = BCRC 80441T = JCM 18446T) is proposed.

Abstract
Increasing numbers of patients with different types of dementia have resulted in the increasing medical care loads. It is not known whether explanatory factors for recurrent or prolong hospitalization were driven by the subtypes of dementia. We analyzed 203 dementia patients aged >65-year-old with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD), or Parkinsonism-related dementia (PRD). With a 4-year follow-up period, logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors of dementia diagnosis, cerebrovascular risk factors, chronic systemic diseases, and the etiology for admission for recurrent (>4 times/4 years) or prolonged hospitalization stay (>14 days per hospitalization). There were 48 AD, 96 VaD, and 59 PRD patients that completed the 4-year study. The average length of hospital stay was significant, the shortest in AD and the longest in PRD (P = 0.01), whereas the frequency of hospitalization was not different among 3 dementia subtypes. Although delirium is the most common etiology for admission in the patients, diabetes mellitus (Odds ratio, OR = 2.79, P = 0.02), pneumonia (OR = 11.21, P < 0.001), and fall-related hip fracture (OR = 4.762, P = 0.029) were significantly associated with prolong hospitalization. Patients with coronary artery disease (OR = 9.87, P = 0.02), pneumonia (OR = 84.48, P < 0.001), urinary tract infection (OR = 55.09, P < 0.001), and fall-related fracture (OR = 141.7, P < 0.001) predict recurrent hospitalization. Dementia subtypes did not influence directly on the hospitalization courses. The etiologies for admission carried higher clinical significance, compared with the coexisted systemic diseases.

The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid; menaquinone (MK-7) was the predominant respiratory quinone. According to distinct phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features, strain CC-Bw-5T is proposed to represent a novel species within the genus Bacillus for which the name Bacillus lycopersici sp. nov. is proposed. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes revealed a distinct taxonomic position attained by strain CC-CZW004T with respect to other members of the genus Nocardioides. The novel strain shared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Nocardioides daejeonensis JCM 16922T (96.4 %), Nocardioides pacificus JCM 19260T (96.3 %), and Marmoricola scoriae JCM 17444T (96.2 %). The major fatty acids of strain CC-CZW004T consisted of C17:0, C16:1ω5c, C17:1ω8c`, iso-C16:0 and C19:1ω11c/C19:1ω9c (summed feature 6). The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell wall was ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipid profile was composed of major amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and aminophospholipid. The DNA G+C content was 73.3 mol%. The predominant quinone system was menaquinone (MK-8). On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic evidences presented here, strain CC-CZW004T represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides echinoideorum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CC-CZW004T ( = BCRC 16974T = JCM 30276T).

Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes revealed a distinct taxonomic position attained by strain CC-CZW007(T) with respect to other species of the genus Vitellibacter. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The polar lipid profile was composed of major amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine, unidentified lipids and aminolipids; a moderate amount of aminophospholipid was also detected. The DNA G + C content was 34.7 mol%. The predominant quinone system was menaquinone (MK-6). On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic evidence presented here, strain CC-CZW007(T) is proposed to represent a novel species within the genus Vitellibacter, for which the name Vitellibacter echinoideorum sp. nov. is proposed. Abstract
A Gram-stain negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and non-spore-forming bacterium, CC-Bw-6(T) was isolated from chopped tomato stems. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the strain CC-Bw-6(T) showed its affiliation with the genus Lysobacter within the class Gammaproteobacteria. Strain CC-Bw-6(T) was found to be most closely related to Lysobacter panaciterrae KCTC 12601(T) (97.0%) and Lysobacter daecheongensis KCTC 12600(T) (96.8%), and showed lower similarity (<96.5%) to other Lysobacter species. DNA-DNA relatedness between strain CC-Bw-6(T) and L. panaciterrae KCTC 12601(T) was 10.8%, the G+C content of the genomic DNA is 69.9 mol%. Strain CC-Bw-6(T) was determined to possess C(11:0) iso, C(11:0) iso 3OH, C(14:0) iso, C(15:0) anteiso, C(15:1) ω5c, C(16:1) ω5c, C(16:0), C(15:0) iso, C(16:0) iso, C(17:0) iso and C(16:0) 10-methyl/C(17:1) iso ω9c as predominant fatty acids. The major polar lipid profile consists of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and unidentified phospholipids. The predominant polyamine is spermidine, and ubiquinone-8 is the predominant respiratory quinone. Analysis of phenotypic, geno- and phylogenetic characteristics revealed a distinct taxonomic position of strain CC-Bw-6(T) with respect to other Lysobacter species. Based on the phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data presented here, we propose a novel species with the name Lysobacter lycopersici sp. nov. The type strain is CC-Bw-6(T) (=BCRC 80612(T) = JCM 19164(T)).

Abstract
A Gram-stain negative, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, motile cellulolytic bacterium, designated strain CC-AMH-0(T), was isolated from surface seashore water of Hualien, Taiwan and subjected to polyphasic taxonomy. Strain CC-AMH-0(T) exhibited enzymatic saccharification of cellulose and active growth particularly during log-phase under nutrient-limited conditions, whereas enhanced saccharification was found in the declining growth phase under copiotrophic conditions. The novel strain shared high pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Mesorhizobium loti USDA 3471(T) (96.2 %), Phyllobacterium myrsinacearum IAM 13584(T) (95.9 %), Hoeflea marina LMG 128(T) (94.0 %) and other Phyllobacteriaceae members. However, phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA, atpD and recA gene sequences clearly distinguished strain CC-AMH-0(T) from other representatives of related genera. In addition, strain CC-AMH-0(T) was distinguished from the above mentioned species by significantly lacking phosphatidylcholine besides accommodating major amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine and sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol; moderate amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine and trace amounts of an unidentified phospholipid, an unidentified aminolipid and an unidentified phosphoglycolipid. Strain CC-AMH-0(T) possessed C18:1 ω7c and/or C18:1 ω6c (summed feature 8) as predominant fatty acids, 63.3 mol% DNA G+C content and ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) as the sole respiratory quinone. On the basis of polyphasic taxonomic evidences, strain CC-AMH-0(T) is proposed to represent a novel genus and species of the family Phyllobacteriaceae, for which the name Oricola cellulosilytica gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is CC-AMH-0(T) (=JCM 19534(T) =BCRC 80694(T)). Emended descriptions of M. loti and P. myrsinacearum are also proposed.

Abstract
Estrogens are essential for female reproduction and overall well-being, and estrogens in the circulation are largely synthesized in ovarian granulosa cells. Using primary cultures of ovarian granulosa cells from gonadotropin-primed immature rats, we have recently discovered that pituitary FSH and ovarian cytokine transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) induce calcineurin-mediated dephosphorylation-activation of cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB)-regulated transcription coactivator (CRTC2) to modulate the expression of Star, Cyp11a1, and Hsd3b leading to increased production of progesterone. This study explored the role of calcineurin and CRTC2 in FSH and TGFβ1 regulation of Cyp19a1 expression in granulosa cells. Ovarian granulosa cells treated with FSH displayed increased aromatase protein at 24 h post-treatment, which subsided by 48 h, while TGFβ1 acting through its type 1 receptor augmented the action of FSH with a greater and longer effects. It is known that the ovary-specific Cyp19a1 PII-promoter contains crucial response elements for CREB and nuclear receptor NR5A subfamily liver receptor homolog 1 (LRH1/NR5A2) and steroidogenic factor 1 (SF1/NR5A1), and that the Nr5a2 promoter also has a potential CREB-binding site. Herein, we demonstrate that FSH+TGFβ1 increased LRH1 and SF1 protein levels, and their binding to the Cyp19a1 PII-promoter evidenced, determined by chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis. Moreover, pretreatment with calcineurin auto-inhibitory peptide (CNI) abolished the FSH+TGFβ1-upregulated but not FSH-upregulated aromatase activity at 48 h, and the corresponding mRNA changes in Cyp19a1, and Nr5a2 and Nr5a1 at 24 h. In addition, FSH and TGFβ1 increased CRTC2 binding to the Cyp19a1 PII-promoter and Nr5a2 promoter at 24 h, with CREB bound constitutively. In summary, the results of this study indicate that calcineurin and CRTC2 have important roles in mediating FSH and TGFβ1 collateral upregulation of Cyp19a1 expression together with its transcription regulators Nr5a2 and Nr5a1 in ovarian granulosa cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-neurosurgical (post-NS) adult bacterial meningitis (ABM) with mixed infection is rarely examined solely in the literature. METHODS The clinical features and laboratory data of post-NS ABM patients with mixed infection were included for analysis. RESULTS Totally 170 post-NS ABM cases were identified and 18 (11 men and 7 women, aged 20-77 years, median = 57.5) of them had a mixed infection. A total of 45 bacterial strains including 34 Gram-negative [Gm(-)] strains and 11 Gram-positive [Gm(+)] strains were isolated. Of the implicated pathogens, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Klebsiella spp. were the common Gm(-) strains, while staphylococcal, streptococcal, and enterococcal strains were the common Gm(+) strains. Compared with the post-NS ABM cases with monomicrobial infection, those with mixed infection had a lower cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) white blood cell count. The mortality rate of post-NS ABM cases was 33.3% (6/18) without significant clinical and laboratory difference between the fatal and non-fatal groups. CONCLUSION Mixed infection is not uncommon in post-NS ABM (10.6%, 18/170), and its mortality rate is high. Seventy-six percent of the implicated bacterial pathogens belonged to Gm(-) strains, while the other 24% were Gm(+) strains. The clinical and laboratory features of ABM with mixed infection are not unique; its diagnosis can only be confirmed by a positive CSF culture.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, rod- or oval-shaped, motile, non-spore-forming bacterium, designated strain CC-AMHB-3(T), was isolated from coastal surface seawater off Hualien, Taiwan. The novel strain showed high pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Ruegeria mobilis NBRC 101030(T) (96.5%), Ruegeria scottomollicae LMG 24367(T) (96.4%), Phaeobacter aquaemixtae SSK6-1(T) (96.2%), Phaeobacter daeponensis TF-218(T) (96.2%), Cribrihabitans marinus CZ-AM5(T) (96.1%) and other species of the family Rhodobacteraceae (≤ 95.9%). However, strain CC-AMHB-3(T) formed a distinct phyletic lineage associated with C. marinus CZ-AM5(T) during phylogenetic analyses. The polar lipid profile of strain CC-AMHB-3(T) included major amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylcholine; moderate amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified aminolipid, an unidentified phospholipid and an unidentified lipid; and trace amounts of an unidentified lipid and an unidentified phospholipid, which was qualitatively almost in line with that of C. marinus CZ-AM5(T) but remarkably distinct as compared with the type species of the genera Ruegeria (Ruegeria atlantica JCM 21234(T)) and Phaeobacter (Phaeobacter gallaeciensis JCM 21319(T)). In line with the fatty acid profile of C. marinus CZ-AM5(T), the major (>5% of total) fatty acids of strain CC-AMHB-3(T) were C(18:1)ω7c and/or C(18:1)ω6c (summed feature 8), 11-methyl C(18:1)ω7c and C(16:0). The DNA G+C content was 66.7 mol%. Ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) was the sole respiratory quinone. Thus, based on the results of the polyphasic study presented here, strain CC-AMHB-3(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Cribrihabitans, for which the name Cribrihabitans neustonicus sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is CC-AMHB-3(T) ( = JCM 19537(T) =BCRC 80695(T)). In addition, an emended description of the genus Cribrihabitans is also proposed.

EL-172T). The predominant (>75 % of the total) fatty acid was summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c). The polar lipid profile included major amounts of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminolipid. In addition, moderate amounts of an unidentified lipid and trace amounts of an unidentified phospholipid were detected. The DNA G+C content was 67.9 mol%. Ubiquinone Q-10 was the sole respiratory quinone. Based on its phylogenetic distinctiveness and distinguishing phenotypic characteristics (in particular its polar lipid pattern), we conclude that strain CC-AMW-ET represents a novel genus and species of the family
