Abstract
OBJECTIVE To measure neuromagnetic fields of ulnar neuropathy patients at the elbow after electrical stimulation and evaluate ulnar nerve function at the elbow with high spatial resolution. METHODS A superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer system recorded neuromagnetic fields of the ulnar nerve at the elbow after electrical stimulation at the wrist in 16 limbs of 16 healthy volunteers and 21 limbs of 20 patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. After artifact removal, neuromagnetic field signals were processed into current distributions, which were superimposed onto X-ray images for visualization. RESULTS Based on the results in healthy volunteers, conduction velocity of 30 m/s or 50% attenuation in current amplitude was set as the reference value for conduction disturbance. Of the 21 patient limbs, 15 were measurable and lesion sites were detected, whereas 6 limbs were unmeasurable due to weak neuromagnetic field signals. Seven limbs were deemed normal by nerve conduction study, but 5 showed conduction disturbances on magnetoneurography. CONCLUSIONS Measuring the magnetic field after nerve stimulation enabled visualization of neurophysiological activity in patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow and evaluation of conduction disturbances. SIGNIFICANCE Magnetoneurography may be useful for assessing lesion sites in patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow.

Abstract
SETTING Japan, an intermediate TB burden country. OBJECTIVE To review TB-related technical enquiries received at the Research Institute of Tuberculosis, Japan, from January 2017 to December 2019. DESIGN This was a cohort study. RESULTS A total of 2,197 enquiries were analysed. On average, 61.0 enquiries/month (range: 42-81) were received. The enquiry rates were highest for the Yamanashi (4.65/100,000 population) and Ishikawa (4.55) Prefectures, and lowest in the Yamagata (0.46) and Tochigi (0.56) Prefectures. The main organisations the enquirers belonged to were local governments (n = 1,585, 72.1%) and healthcare facilities (n = 307, 14.0%). The enquirers were medical doctors (n = 391, 17.8%), nurses (n = 1,207, 54.9%), other healthcare professionals (n = 57, 2.6%), the general public (n = 168, 7.6%) and others/unknown (n = 374, 17.0%). The most frequent enquiries were about TB diagnosis and treatment (n = 501, 22.8%), including laboratory diagnosis (n = 88, 4.0%), TB treatment in general (n = 93, 4.2%) and management of comorbidities (n = 86, 3.9%), followed by contact investigations (n = 385, 17.5%) and TB in foreigners (n = 344, 15.7%). CONCLUSION As the most frequent enquiries were about diagnosis and treatment of TB, the health ministry of Japan should maintain a few specialised TB institutions with TB physicians to provide technical assistance.

Efficacy and Safety of Once-Weekly Somatrogon Compared with Once-Daily Somatropin (Genotropin®) in Japanese Children with Pediatric Growth Hormone Deficiency: Results from a Randomized Phase 3 Study. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Somatrogon is a long-acting recombinant human growth hormone being developed as a once-weekly treatment for children with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). The objective of this phase 3 study (NCT03874013) was to compare the efficacy and safety of once-weekly somatrogon with once-daily Genotropin in Japanese children with GHD. METHODS In this open-label, randomized, active-controlled study, 44 prepubertal Japanese children with GHD (boys: 3 to <11 years; girls: 3 to <10 years) were randomized 1:1 to receive once-weekly somatrogon or once-daily Genotropin (0.025 mg/kg/day) for 12 months. Dose escalation for somatrogon-treated subjects occurred in the first 6 weeks (0.25, 0.48, and 0.66 mg/kg/week; 2 weeks each) with the remaining 46 weeks at a dose of 0.66 mg/kg/week. The study's primary endpoint was annualized height velocity (HV) at 12 months. RESULTS Baseline characteristics were similar between treatment groups. Compared with Genotropin-treated subjects, somatrogon-treated subjects had higher least-squares mean HV at 12 months (9.65 cm/year vs. 7.87 cm/year). Once-weekly somatrogon was concluded as being comparable to once-daily Genotropin as the mean treatment difference (somatrogon-Genotropin) in HV was +1.79 cm/year (95% confidence interval, 0.97-2.61), which was greater than the preestablished margin (-1.8 cm/year). For both treatment groups, most adverse events were mild to moderate in severity and a similar proportion of subjects reported injection-site pain, although the somatrogon group reported more painful injections. CONCLUSION In prepubertal Japanese children with GHD, once-weekly somatrogon was comparable to once-daily Genotropin in terms of annualized (12-month) HV. Both treatments had similar safety and tolerability profiles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Noninvasive and detailed visualization of electrophysiological activity in the thoracic spinal cord through magnetoneurography. METHODS In five healthy volunteers, magnetic fields around current flowing in the thoracic spinal cord after alternating unilateral and synchronized bilateral sciatic nerve stimulation were measured using a magnetoneurograph system with superconductive quantum interference device biomagnetometers. The current distribution was obtained from the magnetic data by spatial filtering and visualized by superimposing it on the X-ray image. Conduction velocity was calculated using the peak latency of the current waveforms. RESULTS A sufficiently high magnetic signal intensity and signal-to-noise ratio were obtained in all participants after synchronized bilateral sciatic nerve stimulation. Leading and trailing components along the spinal canal and inward components flowing into the depolarization site ascended to the upper thoracic spine. Conduction velocity of the inward current in the whole thoracic spine was 42.4 m/s. CONCLUSIONS Visualization of electrophysiological activity in the thoracic spinal cord was achieved through magnetoneurography and a new method for synchronized bilateral sciatic nerve stimulation. Magnetoneurography is expected to be a useful modality in functional assessment of thoracic myelopathy. SIGNIFICANCE This is the first report to use magnetoneurography to noninvasively visualize electrophysiological activity in the thoracic spinal cord in detail.

Abstract
Abstract
Objectives: Somatrogon is a long-acting recombinant human growth hormone consisting of the amino acid sequence of human growth hormone and three copies of the carboxy-terminal peptide of human chorionic gonadotropin. Somatrogon is being developed as a once weekly treatment for children with pGHD. A Phase 3 trial was designed to compare the efficacy and safety of somatrogon administered once weekly with Genotropin administered once daily in Japanese patients with pGHD (ClinicalTrials. gov: NCT03874013).
Methods: 44 Japanese pGHD patients (age 3-11 years) were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive either once weekly somatrogon (0.66 mg/kg/week) or once daily Genotropin (0.025 mg/kg/day) subcutaneously for 12 months. Somatrogon-treated patients had a pharmacokinetic assessment in the first 6 weeks with dose escalation occurring in 3 steps, at 0.25, 0.48, and 0.66 mg/kg/week, for 2 weeks at each dose. For the remaining 46 weeks, patients in the somatrogon treatment group continued to receive somatrogon at a dose of 0.66 mg/kg/week. The primary endpoint of the study was annualized height velocity (HV) at 12 months.
Results: Baseline characteristics were balanced and comparable between the two treatment groups. The least square means of HV at month 12 were 9.65 cm/year in the somatrogon group (n=22) and 7.87 cm/year in the Genotropin group (n=22), with a point estimate treatment difference of 1.79 cm/year (95% confidence interval: 0.97, 2.60) in favour of somatrogon. The point estimate was greater than the pre-established mean treatment difference of -1.8 cm/year, which was the non-inferiority margin met in the global Phase 3 study (n=224) with somatrogon (0.66 mg/kg/week) and Genotropin (0.034mg/kg/day) (ClinicalTrials. gov: NCT02968004). Most of the adverse events were mild to moderate in severity and somatrogon was generally well-tolerated with no notable difference in safety between the two treatment groups. Injection site pain was more common in the somatrogon group (somatrogon: 72.7%, Genotropin: 13.6%).
Conclusions: The Japanese Phase 3 trial in patients with pGHD demonstrated that once weekly somatrogon was comparable to daily Genotropin. The annual HV after 12 months of treatment was higher in the somatrogon group than the Genotropin group. Somatrogon administration was generally well tolerated in patients with pGHD. The results of this Japanese Phase 3 study are consistent with the results previously reported from the global Phase 3 study that met its primary endpoint of noninferiority to daily Genotropin.

Abstract
Since 1993, reports on tuberculosis (TB) outbreaks have been collected in Japan; however, there has never been an overall analysis of these TB outbreaks. We aim to provide one here. The TB outbreak data were obtained from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and are described in terms of time, place and transmission site. The average number of TB cases and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) were compared by the transmission site. Some 605 TB outbreaks with 3491 TB cases were reported in 1993-2015 with an increasing trend (r = 0.45), during which time 728 777 TB cases were reported nationwide. On an average, TB outbreaks occurred more often in April to May (5.5 outbreaks per 2 months) than in December to January (3.4). The most common transmission sites were workplaces (n = 255), followed by health facilities (n = 144), schools (n = 60) and welfare facilities (n = 48). Psychiatric hospitals and nursing homes had the highest average number of TB cases per outbreak (8.5 each), whereas schools and prisons had the highest numbers of LTBI cases (29.1 and 38.9, respectively). Countries, particularly those that have resources to investigate TB outbreaks, should collect and analyse findings of TB outbreaks, as it informs surveillance systems and eventually strengthens general health systems.

Abstract
PURPOSE It is important to make the most up-to-date drug safety information available to the public in a timely manner so that health care professionals and patients can consider the information. The aim of the present study was to investigate the consistency and simultaneity of safety related updates in product labeling in Japan and the United States. METHODS New safety label changes that were made for new drugs approved concurrently both in Japan and the United States in the recent 5 years were identified and reviewed for concordance and time lag analysis. Factors associated with the time lag were also investigated. RESULTS Despite similar medical practices, population health and regulation in the countries, a low level of concordance (40/115, 34.8%) in the decision of labeling change was found in 31 new active substances. Only 3/40 (7.5%) of the concordant changes were made simultaneously. Labeling change orders issued by regulators and domestic postmarketing adverse event reports were associated with a significant difference in the timing of labeling change between the countries. CONCLUSIONS We found a low level of concordance between regulators in the decision of labeling changes and the timeliness of the changes. The low concordance and time lag highlighted the need for further international collaboration between regulators and industry and greater transparency in the decision-making process for the label change.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Here, we present the efficacy of an aggressive respiratory rehabilitation program that was initiated from early postoperative period, expecting to improve inspiratory volume at an early stage after primary Nuss procedure. METHODS The study was performed as a nonrandomized controlled study undergoing primary Nuss procedure at our institute from 2016 to 2018. We evaluated 34 patients and assigned them to two groups based on whether or not they received a respiratory rehabilitation. Group A (between June 2016 and March 2018) includes patients with inspiratory training postoperatively, and group B (between April 2018 and July 2018) includes patients without training. At the time of admission, a physiatrist provided each patient with a training instruction. From day five postoperatively, the patients in group A started training for inspiration with an incentive spirometer (Coach 2®PORTEX) four times a day. Patients were instructed to perform the same training at home after discharge. Using this device, we measured pre- and postoperative inspired volumes in each group. Data were analyzed with Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney tests and a paired Student t-test. A p-value below 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups concerning both operative age and the degree of the deformity calculated by Haller index. Preoperative inspiratory volume showed no significant differences. Although there were no statistical differences between two groups in the inspiratory volume at discharge, these two parameters were significantly higher in group A after three months postoperatively (A: 1404 ± 466 ml vs B: 900 ± 314 ml) and the values increased compared to the preoperative stage in group A. CONCLUSIONS These data indicate the aggressive respiratory rehabilitation is an effective regimen to increase inspiratory volume at an early stage after Nuss procedure. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE III.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish a noninvasive method to measure the neuromagnetic fields of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel after electrical digital nerve stimulation and evaluate peripheral nerve function. METHODS Using a vector-type biomagnetometer system with a superconducting quantum interference device, neuromagnetic fields at the carpal tunnel were recorded after electrical stimulation of the index or middle digital nerve in five healthy volunteers. A novel technique for removing stimulus-induced artifacts was applied, and current distributions were calculated using a spatial filter algorithm and superimposed on X-ray. RESULTS A neuromagnetic field propagating from the palm to the carpal tunnel was observed in all participants. Current distributions estimated from the magnetic fields had five components: leading and trailing components parallel to the conduction pathway, outward current preceding the leading component, inward currents between the leading and trailing components, and outward current following the trailing component. The conduction velocity and peak latency of the inward current agreed well with those of sensory nerve action potentials. CONCLUSION Removing stimulus-induced artifacts enabled magnetoneurography to noninvasively visualize with high spatial resolution the electrophysiological neural activity from the palm to the carpal tunnel. SIGNIFICANCE This is the first report of using magnetoneurography to visualize electrophysiological nerve activity at the palm and carpal tunnel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish a method to measure cauda equina action fields (CEAFs) and visualize the electrical activities of the cauda equina in a broadly aged group of healthy adults. METHODS Using a 124-channel magnetospinography (MSG) system with superconducting interference devices, the CEAFs of 43 healthy volunteers (22-64 years of age) were measured after stimulation of the peroneal nerve at the knee. Reconstructed currents were obtained from the CEAFs and superimposed on the X-ray image. Conduction velocities were also calculated from the waveform of the reconstructed currents. RESULTS The reconstructed currents were successfully visualized. They flowed into the L5/S1 foramen about 8.25-8.95 ms after the stimulation and propagated cranially along the spinal canal. In 32 subjects (74%), the conduction velocities of the reconstructed currents in the cauda equina could be calculated from the peak latency at the L2-L5 level. CONCLUSIONS MSG visualized the electrical activity of the cauda equina after peroneal nerve stimulation in healthy adults. In addition, the conduction velocities of the reconstructed currents in the cauda equina could be calculated, despite previously being difficult to measure. SIGNIFICANCE MSG has the potential to be a novel and noninvasive functional examination for lumbar spinal disease.

Abstract
Background: Japan had a tuberculosis (TB) notification rate of 13.9 per 100 000 population in 2016. Objectives: To characterise TB-related enquiries received by the Research Institute of Tuberculosis, Tokyo, Japan, between January 2014 and December 2016. Design: A descriptive study of the time, place and other attributes of the enquiries. Results: A total of 1864 enquiries were listed for analysis. On average, 51.8 enquiries (range 30-77) were received per month. The enquiry rates were highest for Yamanashi (5.87/100 000) and Kochi (5.77) Prefectures, and lowest in Miyazaki (0.45) and Saga (0.48) Prefectures. Enquirers belonged mostly to local governments (n = 1212, 65%) and health care facilities (n = 386, 21%), and included medical doctors (n = 412, 22%), nurses (n = 926, 50%) and the general public (n = 150, 8.0%). Most enquiries concerned TB diagnosis and treatment (n = 475, 25%), including diagnosis in general (n = 38, 2.0%), laboratory diagnosis (n = 83, 4.5%), anti-tuberculosis treatment in general (n = 62, 3.3%) and the management of comorbidities or adverse events (n = 60, 3.2%), followed by contact investigations (n = 371, 20%). Conclusions: As most enquiries concerned the diagnosis and treatment of TB, the Ministry of Health of Japan should maintain a number of specialised TB institutions with TB clinicians to provide technical assistance.

Abstract
Our study aimed at evaluating the safety and efficacy of GH treatment up to near adult height (NAH) for short children born small for gestational age (SGA). This was a multi-center, open-label, long-term extension study after a one-year, randomized, open-label, dose-response study. The primary objective was to assess safety, determined by adverse events and laboratory test parameters. Height parameters were evaluated as a secondary objective. The final data after all patients completed the study were reported. Overall, 61 patients were enrolled in the study. GH treatment was well tolerated. No notable changes in HbA1c levels, oral glucose tolerance tests and glucose metabolism were observed. No new safety concerns related to long-term treatment up to NAH were identified. Twenty patients (11 boys and 9 girls) reached NAH with a mean height of 159.1 cm and 146.9 cm, respectively. The mean change in height SDS from baseline to NAH was +1.9 in boys and +1.8 in girls. Long-term GH treatment for SGA short stature was confirmed to be safe and effective for the normalization of adult height.

Abstract
Diagnosis of nervous system disease is greatly aided by functional assessments and imaging techniques that localize neural activity abnormalities. Electrophysiological methods are helpful but often insufficient to locate neural lesions precisely. One proposed noninvasive alternative is magnetoneurography (MNG); we have developed MNG of the spinal cord (magnetospinography, MSG). Using a 120-channel superconducting quantum interference device biomagnetometer system in a magnetically shielded room, cervical spinal cord evoked magnetic fields (SCEFs) were recorded after stimulation of the lower thoracic cord in healthy subjects and a patient with cervical spondylotic myelopathy and after median nerve stimulation in healthy subjects. Electrophysiological activities in the spinal cord were reconstructed from SCEFs and visualized by a spatial filter, a recursive null-steering beamformer. Here, we show for the first time that MSG with high spatial and temporal resolution can be used to map electrophysiological activities in the cervical spinal cord and spinal nerve.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many of the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment guidelines recognize the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors as first-line pharmacological treatment. In Japan, there were no published studies investigating the effectiveness and safety of sertraline for PTSD in a clinical setting. METHODS We conducted a retrospective medical chart review of the dosage, effectiveness, and safety of sertraline for the PTSD treatment in Japan. Data were collected from medical charts of patients of PTSD, caused by various types of trauma, who were treated with sertraline between July 2006 and October 2012 during their regular clinical practice. To evaluate the effectiveness, the investigators retrospectively assessed the severity and improvement of the symptoms using the Clinical Global Impressions - Severity and the Clinical Global Impressions - Improvement. RESULTS The study population was 122 Japanese patients aged ≥18 years with a diagnosis of PTSD who were treated with sertraline (median duration, 10.6 months). Doses ranged from 12.5 to 150 mg/day, mostly 25 and 50 mg/day. The median duration of observation was 10.8 months. Out of those, 50% of patients were regarded as responders by using the Clinical Global Impressions - Improvement at the end of sertraline treatment or the last observation. Two-thirds (65.6%) of patients improved in the severity of PTSD, as assessed by Clinical Global Impressions - Severity, whereas 32.8% showed no change, and 1.6% worsened. Subgroups analyses and logistic regression analyses suggested that the type of traumatic events was the factor with the highest influence on the response rate. The adverse events in this chart review were consistent with the known safety profile of sertraline. There were no reports of serious or severe adverse events considered to be related to sertraline. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggested the effectiveness of sertraline for the treatment of PTSD in a Japanese clinical setting, and the obtained safety profile was consistent with the generally known safety profile of sertraline. Abstract
The hydrocarbons preserved in an Archean rock were extracted, and their composition and distribution in consecutive slices from the outside to the inside of the rock were examined. The 2.7 Ga rock was collected from the Fortescue Group in the Pilbara region, Western Australia. The bitumen I (solvent-extracted rock) and bitumen II (solvent-extracted hydrochloric acid-treated rock) fractions have different hydrocarbon compositions. Bitumen I contains only trace amounts of aliphatic hydrocarbons and virtually no aromatic hydrocarbons. In contrast, bitumen II contains abundant aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The difference seems to reflect the weathering history and preservational environment of the investigated rock. Aliphatic hydrocarbons in bitumen I are considered to be mainly from later hydrocarbon inputs, after initial deposition and burial, and are therefore not indigenous. The lack of aromatic hydrocarbons in bitumen I suggests a severe weathering environment since uplift and exposure of the rock at the Earth's surface in the Cenozoic. On the other hand, the high abundance of aromatic hydrocarbons in bitumen II suggests that bitumen II hydrocarbons have been physically isolated from removal by their encapsulation within carbonate minerals. The richness of aromatic hydrocarbons and the relative scarcity of aliphatic hydrocarbons may reflect the original compositions of organic materials biosynthesised in ancient organisms in the Archean era, or the high thermal maturity of the rock. Cyanobacterial biomarkers were observed in the surficial slices of the rock, which may indicate that endolithic cyanobacteria inhabited the surface outcrop. The distribution of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons implies a high thermal maturity, which is consistent with the lack of any specific biomarkers, such as hopanes and steranes, and the prehnite-pumpellyite facies metamorphic grade.

Abstract
Malignant melanoma (MM) is one of the most aggressive cancers in dogs and in humans. However, the molecular mechanisms of its development and progression remain unclear. Presently, we examined the expression profile of microRNAs (miRs) in canine oral MM tissues and paired normal oral mucosa tissues by using the microRNA-microarray assay and quantitative RT-PCR. Importantly, a decreased expression of miR-203 was significantly associated with a shorter survival time. Also, miR-203 and -205 were markedly down-regulated in canine and human MM cell lines tested. Furthermore, the ectopic expression of miR-205 had a significant inhibitory effect on the cell growth of canine and human melanoma cells tested by targeting erbb3. Our data suggest that miR-203 is a new prognostic factor in canine oral MMs and that miR-205 functions as a tumour suppressor by targeting erbb3 in both canine and human MM cells.

Abstract
Background Definitive diagnosis of histiocytic sarcoma (HS) in dogs is relatively difficult by conventional histopathological examination because objective features of HS are not well defined. Hypothesis Quantitative analysis of mRNA expression of selected cellular surface antigens (SAs) specific to HS in dogs can facilitate objective and rapid diagnosis. Animals Dogs with HS (n = 30) and dogs without HS (n = 36), including those with other forms of lymphoma (n = 4), inflammatory diseases (n = 6), and other malignant neoplasias (n = 26). Methods Retrospective clinical observational study. Specimens were collected by excisional biopsy, needle core biopsy, or fine needle aspiration. To determine HS detection efficacy, mRNA expression levels of selected SAs specific to HS in dogs, including MHC class IIα, CD11b, CD11c, and CD86, were quantitatively analyzed using real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results Each SA mRNA expression level was significantly higher in HS dogs than in non‐HS dogs (P = .0082). Cutoff values for discriminating between HS and non‐HS dogs based on these expression levels were calculated on the basis of receiver‐operating characteristic analysis. Accuracy of the cutoff values, including MHC class IIα, CD11b, CD11c, and CD86, was 87.9, 86.4, 86.4, and 84.8%, respectively. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Our results suggest that quantitative analysis of mRNA expression of the selected SAs could be an adjunctive diagnostic technique with high diagnostic accuracy for HS in dogs. Substantial investigation is required for exclusion of diseases with similar cell types of origin to lymphoma.

Abstract
Discoveries of immunomodulatory functions in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have suggested that they might have therapeutic utility in treating immune diseases. Recently, a novel MSC population was identified from dental pulp of human supernumerary teeth, and its multipotency characterized. Herein, we first examined the in vitro and in vivo immunomodulatory functions of human supernumerary tooth-derived stem cells (SNTSCs). SNTSCs suppressed not only the viability of T-cells, but also the differentiation of interleukin 17 (IL-17)-secreting helper T (Th17)-cells in in vitro co-culture experiments. In addition, systemic SNTSC transplantation ameliorated the shortened lifespan and elevated serum autoantibodies and nephritis-like renal dysfunction in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) model MRL/lpr mice. SNTSC transplantation also suppressed in vivo increased levels of peripheral Th17 cells and IL-17, as well as ex vivo differentiation of Th17 cells in MRL/lpr mice. Adoptive transfer experiments demonstrated that SNTSC-transplanted MRL/lpr mouse-derived T-cell-adopted immunocompromised mice showed a longer lifespan in comparison with non-transplanted MRL/lpr mouse-derived T-cell-adopted immunocompromised mice, indicating that SNTSC transplantation suppresses the hyper-immune condition of MRL/lpr mice through suppressing T-cells. Analysis of these data suggests that SNTSCs are a promising MSC source for cell-based therapy for immune diseases such as SLE.

Abstract
The prevalence of sesamoid bones in the hands has been reported in some previous articles. Most of them, however, have reported sesamoid bones of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the hand and of the interphalangeal (IP) joint of the thumb. The present study investigates the prevalence of sesamoid bones of the IP joint of the thumb and fingers. A retrospective review of radiologic views of the IP joints in the thumb or fingers was performed, including a total of 650 patients (1,096 thumbs or fingers). Sesamoid bones were found in the IP joint of the thumb at 67% (212 of 318), while the index, middle, ring, little fingers had sesamoid bones in the proximal interphlangeal (PIP) joint at 0% (0 of 172), 0.4% (1 of 244), 0.5% (1 of 183), and 1% (2 of 179), respectively. None of the four fingers had sesamoid bones in the distal IP joint. Previous articles have described the similar prevalence to the present study, of sesamoid bones of the IP joint of the thumb, while some others reported the different prevalence. About the PIP joint, no previous articles have found a sesamoid bone. Because the lateral X-ray view is more accurate and suitable to evaluate sesamoid bones, we used the lateral one for the present study. The knowledge that sesamoid bones occurs at these rates in the thumb IP joint and finger PIP joints is helpful to differentiate chip fractures from sesamoid bones near the IP joint, including the PIP joint.

Abstract
The immunohistochemical expression of the class A macrophage scavenger receptor CD204, was investigated in 50 canine histiocytic sarcomas (HSs) and compared with that of CD18, CD163, CD11d and class II molecules of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Expression of CD204 was also determined in 81 canine round cell tumours and pleomorphic sarcomas including T- and B-cell lymphomas, mast cell tumours, extramedullary plasmacytomas, cutaneous histiocytomas, transmissible venereal tumours, pigmented or amelanotic melanomas, poorly differentiated haemangiosarcomas and rhabdomyosarcomas. All of the 50 HSs expressed CD204, CD18 and MHC class II; 27 were positive for CD163 and seven expressed CD11d. All of the round cell tumours, except for one grade III mast cell tumour, were negative for CD204; however, they showed varying immunoreactivity patterns for CD18 and MHC class II. None of the pleomorphic sarcomas were immunoreactive for CD204. CD204 would appear to be a useful marker for canine HS.

Abstract
Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a malignant neoplasia of vascular endothelial cells (ECs). Our previous report on the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor, basic fibroblast growth factor, and their receptors in canine HSA suggested an autocrine/ paracrine mechanism of tumor growth. However, the influence of other angiogenic growth factors in canine HSA was not elucidated; therefore, the expression of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and its receptors was investigated by immunohistochemical analysis. Forty-six canine HSAs and 21 canine cutaneous hemangiomas (HAs) were analyzed. For immunohistochemistry, anti-PDGF-BB, anti-PDGFR-α, and anti-PDGFR-β antibodies were utilized as primary antibodies. Immunoreactivities were scored as strongly positive (>25% positive neoplastic cells), weakly positive (1-25% positive neoplastic cells), and negative if not staining at all. In cutaneous HA, 33.3% and 57.1% of cases were strongly and weakly positive, respectively, and 43.5% and 13.0% of HSAs were strongly and weakly positive for PDGF-BB, respectively. Moreover, 38.1% and 28.6% of cutaneous HAs cases were strongly and weakly positive, respectively, and 23.9% and 4.3% of HSAs cases were strongly and weakly positive, respectively, for PDGFR-α. Thirty-five HSAs cases (76.1%) were strongly positive, and the remaining 11 (23.9%) were weakly positive for PDGFR-β. In contrast, 18 (72.0%) cutaneous HAs were negative, and only 3 cases (12.0%) were weakly positive, for PDGFR-β. The proportion of strongly positive cases of HSAs was significantly higher than that of cutaneous HA for PDGFR-β (P<0.01), while PDGFR-α was highly expressed in cutaneous HA and may be related to pathogenesis of cutaneous HA. Therefore, PDGFR-β may be associated with the malignant nature of canine HSA.

Abstract
An 11-year-old male Bearded Collie was brought to the Gifu University Animal Medical Centre with a skin mass on the lateral right thigh. Physical examination revealed a 30 × 65-mm oval mass with an alopecic and ulcerated surface. Histopathology of the surgically excised sample confirmed malignant trichoepithelioma. Five months after the surgery, the dog experienced lumbar pain resulting from metastasis to the lumbar vertebrae. Radiation therapy (RT) was performed and it alleviated the lumbar pain. Nine months after the surgery, multiple skin metastases were identified. RT was performed at each occurrence, which reduced the size of each tumour and resulted in a partial response; however, systemic metastasis occurred and the dog died 17 months after the initial surgery. Canine malignant trichoepithelioma is a rare tumour, so an effective treatment has not been determined. Data from our case study indicate that RT has potential for pain control of primary and metastatic malignant trichoepithelioma.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE To determine the mechanical upper airway properties and compensatory neuromuscular responses to obstruction during propofol anesthesia in the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. DESIGN Prospective, randomized study. SETTING University-affiliated hospital. SUBJECTS 12 premenopausal female volunteers for studies of upper airway collapse throughout their menstrual cycle during the follicular phase (6 -10 days) and mid-late luteal phase (20 - 24 days). MEASUREMENTS The level of propofol anesthesia (1.5 - 2.0 μg/mL) required to suppress arousal responses was determined by Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation scoring (level 2) and confirmed by bispectral index monitoring. Pressure-flow relationships were constructed to evaluate collapsibility (P(CRIT)) and up-stream resistance (R(US)) during acute [Passive; hypotonic electromyography (EMG)] and sustained (Active; elevated EMG) changes in nasal mask pressure. The difference between passive P(CRIT) and active P(CRIT) (ΔP(CRIT A-P)) represented the magnitude of the compensatory response to obstruction. MAIN RESULTS Passive P(CRIT) was significantly higher in the mid-late luteal phase (-4.7 cm H(2)O) than in the follicular phase (-6.2 cmH(2)O; P < 0.05). Active P(CRIT) significantly decreased compared with passive P(CRIT) in the follicular phase (-10.1 cm H(2)O) and in the mid-late luteal phase (-7.7 cm H(2)O) and (P < 0.05). No significant difference was noted in ΔP(CRIT) between the follicular (3.9 ± 2.9 cm H(2)O) and mid-late luteal phases (3.0 ± 2.6 cm H(2)O). No differences were seen in R(US) between the menstrual phases for either the passive (P = 0.8) or active (P = 0.75) states. CONCLUSIONS Menstrual phase has an effect on anatomical alterations (mechanical properties) in the hypotonic upper airway during propofol anesthesia.

Abstract
A traceability of frozen semen straws that certify the bloodline of a sire will improve the efficiency of cattle breeding. Semen of the sire can be generally identified by the colour of a straw and printing on a straw. However, it is difficult to identify individual frozen semen straws by the conventional method. To identify straws individually, each straw must be tagged with a unique ID that is able to be read quickly in the frozen state. We have established the identification method for individual frozen semen straws using radio frequency identification (RFID) and developed a traceability system that is able to record the distribution history of an individual semen straw from the production of frozen semen to artificial insemination (AI). We used a 2.5-mm diameter straw combined with an RFID tag, which consisted of a tiny RFID chip (μ-Chip: Hitachi Co. Ltd, 0.4 × 0.4 × 0.2 mm) and a thin aluminum antenna on the polyester sheet (54 × 1.5 × 0.05 mm). The μ-chip contains a unique ID (128 bit). It responds to the 2.45 GHz microwave frequency that is emitted from the RFID reader and transmits its ID to the RFID reader. The μ-Chip retains its function on a straw, which has been stored in the liquid nitrogen (–196°C). Artificial insemination of the frozen semen straw with the RFID tag could be performed using a conventional AI gun. The semen traceability system consisted of the database server and the client software. Information about semen straws is connected with their ID and stored on the database server. Producers and distributors of frozen semen can count the number of semen straws correctly by reading their ID one by one and can send information to the database server through the web by easy operation using the client software. Artificial insemination information can be instantly recorded by the handy terminal that is able to read both a bar-code on the ear tag of the cow and the RFID tag of the straw. The system has been used on fields at Gifu Prefecture in Japan for ∼3 months. Eight hundred thirty-one frozen semen straws with the RFID tag were produced from 3 bulls. After freezing of the straws, 17 straws were not identified with their ID. It was speculated that their μ-Chips were disconnected from the antenna during freezing. Six hundred ninety-four straws were distributed to the 7 AI centers. Five hundred thirty straws were used for AI by 15 inseminators to a total of 424 cows at the 101 farms. Although only one straw could not read its ID after AI, information of the remaining 529 straws were recorded on the database accurately. A strict traceability of frozen semen straws can be established using the individual identification of straws by RFID. Information stored in the database would be useful for the evaluation of sire and the reproductive management of cows.

Abstract
Stem cells in normal tissues and cancer-initiating cells (CICs) are known to be enriched in side population (SP) cells. However, the factors responsible for the regulation of expression of ABCG2, involved in efflux of dyes, in SP cells have not been fully investigated. Here, we characterized the SP cells within diffuse-type gastric carcinoma, and examined the effects of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) on SP cells. Diffuse-type gastric carcinoma cells established from four independent patients universally contained SP cells between 1 and 4% of total cells, which displayed greater tumorigenicity than non-SP cells did. TGF-β repressed the transcription of ABCG2 through direct binding of Smad2/3 to its promoter/enhancer, and the number of SP cells and the tumor-forming ability of cancer cells were decreased by TGF-β, although ABCG2 is not directly involved in the tumor-forming ability of SP cells. Cancer cells from metastatic site expressed much higher levels of ABCG2 and included a greater percentage of SP cells than parental cancer cells did. SP cells are thus responsible for the progression of diffuse-type gastric carcinoma, and TGF-β negatively contributes to maintain the CICs within the cancer.

Abstract
Oral biofilms such as dental plaque cause dental caries and periodontitis, as well as aspiration pneumonia and infectious endocarditis by translocation. Hence, the suppression of oral biofilm formation is an issue of considerable importance. Mechanical removal, disinfectants, inhibition of polysaccharide formation, and artificial sugar have been used for the reduction of oral biofilm. From the viewpoint of the inhibition of bacterial adherence, we investigated whether aqueous biocompatible 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-polymer can reduce streptococcal colonization and biofilm formation. We examined the effects of MPC-polymer on streptococcal adherence to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite and oral epithelial cells, and the adherence of Fusobacterium nucleatum to streptococcal biofilm. MPC-polymer application markedly inhibited both the adherence and biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans on saliva-coated hydroxyapatite and streptococcal adherence to oral epithelial cells, and reduced the adherence of F. nucleatum to streptococcal biofilms. A small-scale clinical trial revealed that mouthrinsing with MPC-polymer inhibited the increase of oral bacterial numbers, especially of S. mutans. These findings suggest that MPC-polymer is a potent inhibitor of bacterial adherence and biofilm development, and may be useful to prevent dental-plaque-related diseases.
