Binding of trivalent metal ions (Al3+, In3+, La3+) with phosphatidylcholine liposomal membranes investigated by microelectrophoresis

Interactions between trivalent metal ions (Al³⁺, In³⁺, La³⁺) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomes are studied by microelectrophoresis. The dependence of the PC membrane surface charge density and zeta potential on [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text] range from 2 to 10) of the aqueous metal chloride solutions is determined. The obtained results indicate the adsorption of Al³⁺, In³⁺ and La³⁺ ions on phosphatidylcholine model membranes, leading to changes in the electrical properties of the membranes. The theoretical considerations on equilibria occurring between phosphatidylcholine liposomal membrane and trivalent metal ions are presented. A mathematical model describing the interactions in a quantitative way is proposed.

Effects of Novel Dinuclear Cisplatinum(II) Complexes on the Electrical Properties of Human Molt-4 Leukemia Cells

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of cisplatin and novel dinuclear platinum(II) complexes on the membrane electrical properties and lipid peroxidation levels of the Molt-4 human leukemia cell line. Changes in cell function may affect the basal electrical surface properties of cell membranes. These changes can be detected using electrokinetic measurements. Surface charge densities of Molt-4 cells were measured as a function of pH. A four-component equilibrium model was used to describe the interaction between the ions in solution and on cell membrane surfaces. Agreement was found between the experimental and theoretical charge variation curves of the leukemia cells at pH 2.5–9. Lipid peroxidation was estimated by measuring levels of 8-iso-prostaglandine F2α [isoprostanes]. Acid and base functional group concentrations and average association constants with hydroxyl ions were smaller in cisplatin- or dinuclear platinum(II) complex-treated leukemia cell membranes compared to those in untreated cancer cells, and the average association constants with hydrogen ions were higher. Levels of lipid peroxidation products in cisplatin- or dinuclear platinum(II) complex-treated leukemia cell were higher than those found in untreated cancer cells.

Association of alkali metal cations with phosphatidylcholine liposomal membrane surface

Interactions of alkali metal cations (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Cs⁺) with phosphatidylcholine (PC) liposomal membranes were investigated through experimental studies and theoretical considerations. Using a microelectrophoresis technique, charge densities of experimental membrane surfaces were measured as a function of the pH of electrolyte solutions. Equilibria between the PC liposomal membranes and monovalent ions were mathematically analyzed and described quantitatively through a previously proposed theoretical model. Association constants between functional groups of PC and the studied ions were determined and used to define theoretical curves of membrane surface charge density versus pH. Theoretical and experimental data were compared to verify the model. The PC membrane was found to have the highest affinity for lithium ions, among the ions tested.

Equilibria Between Cell Membranes and Electrolyte Solution: Effect of Fatal Accidental Hypothermia

Equilibria between the membranes of erythrocytes as well as thrombocytes and solution ions in fatal accidental hypothermia were analyzed using a theoretical four-equilibria model. The model was developed to determinate parameters characterizing cell membrane—surrounding ion interactions: the total surface concentrations of both acidic and basic groups C_A, C_B, and association constants K_AH, K_BOH. Knowledge of these parameters was necessary to calculate the theoretical values of surface charge density. The model was validated by curve-fitting the experimental data points to simulated data generated by the model. The experimental and theoretical surface charge density values agree at pH 2–8, at higher pH the deviation was observed.

Effects of UVB Radiation on the Physicochemical Properties of Fibroblasts and Keratinocytes

The skin is the largest human organ, providing the first line of defense to protect the body from physical and environmental effects. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of short-wave ultraviolet (UVB) radiation on the membrane electrical properties, phospholipid content, and lipid peroxidation levels of fibroblasts and keratinocytes. Changes in cell function may affect the basal electrical surface properties of cell membranes. These changes can be detected using electrokinetic measurements. In this study, the surface charge densities of fibroblasts and keratinocytes were measured as a function of pH. A four-component equilibrium model was used to describe the interaction between the ions in solution and on cell membrane surfaces. Agreement was found between the experimental and theoretical charge variation curves of leukemia cells from pH 2.5 to pH 9. Phospholipid composition was determined qualitatively and quantitatively by HPLC, and lipid peroxidation was estimated by measuring the level of malondialdehyde. The acidic functional group concentrations and average association constants with hydroxyl ions were higher, and the average association constants with hydrogen ions were smaller in UVB-treated skin cell membranes compared to those in untreated cells. Moreover, our results showed that UVB radiation is associated with increased levels of phospholipids and lipid peroxidation products in fibroblasts and keratinocytes.

Characterization of human bladder cell membrane during cancer transformation

Phenomena associated with changes in cell membranes are thought to play an important role in the cancer transformation. We hypothesized that the electrical charge of tumor cells can indirectly represent membrane-based changes that have occurred during cell transformation and may indicate tumor cell status. Here, we describe work showing that phospholipids, proteins content, and electric charge, are all altered in the cell membranes of pT2 stage/grade G3 bladder cancer. Qualitative and quantitative phospholipid composition and the presence of integral membrane proteins were identified using high-performance liquid chromatography. Protein composition was determined using selective hydrolysis of isolated bladder cell membrane proteins and peptide resolution. The surface charge density of human bladder cell membranes was determined using electrophoresis. Our results show that cancer transformation is associated with increased phospholipid levels and a decreased level of integral proteins. Moreover, the process of cancer transformation significantly enhanced changes in the surface charge density of the human bladder cell membrane. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that cell membrane structure and function are modified in bladder cancer cells and that further work in this area is warranted.

The parameters are the total surface concentrations of both acidic and basic groups C A, C B and their association constants with solution ions K AH, K BOH. These parameters were used to calculate the theoretical values of surface charge density. The model was validated by comparison of these values to experimental data, which were determined from the electrophoretic mobility measurements of the blood cells. The experimental and theoretical surface charge density values agree at pH 2-8, and at higher pH, the deviation was observed.

Microelectrophoretic investigation of the interactions between liposomal membranes formed from a phosphatidylcholine-phosphatidylglycerol mixture and monovalent ions

In this paper, we characterized the interactions between two-component liposomal membranes and monovalent electrolyte ions. Liposomes were formed from neutral (phosphatidylcholine) and anionic (phosphatidylglycerol) lipids mixed in various ratios. Microelectrophoresis was used to determine the dependence of the membrane surface charge density on the p H of the electrolyte solution. Changes in the membrane electric charge caused by the adsorption of Na(+), Cl(-), H(+), and OH(-) ions were observed, and the equilibria among these ions and the phosphatidylcholine-phosphatidylglycerol membrane surface were quantified. We proposed a mathematical model for characterizing these equilibria. Using this model, together with experimental data of the membrane surface charge density, we determined association constants characterizing the equilibria. Knowledge of these parameters was necessary to calculate the theoretical curves of the model. We validated the model by curve-fitting the experimental data points to simulated data generated by the model.

Effects of novel dinuclear cisplatinum(II) complexes on the electric properties of human breast cancer cells

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of cisplatin and novel dinuclear platinum(II) complexes on the electrical properties of the membrane and the level of lipid peroxidation in the human breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7. The basal electrical surface properties of cells are known. Changes in cell function may affect these surface properties, and those changes can be detected by electrokinetic measurements. The surface charge density of the breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 were measured as a function of pH. A four-component equilibrium model was used to describe the interaction between the solution ions and the breast cancer cell surface. The experimental and the theoretical charge variation curves of the breast cancer cells at pH 2.5-9 were in agreement. Measurements of the cellular malondialdehyde levels with high performance liquid chromatography were used to determine the extent of lipid peroxidation. The acid and base functional group concentrations and average association constants with hydroxyl ions were smaller in breast cancer cell membranes treated with cisplatin or novel dinuclear platinum(II) complexes compared with untreated cancer cells, and the average association constants with hydrogen ions were higher. The levels of lipid peroxidation products in breast cancer cells treated with cisplatin or novel dinuclear platinum(II) complexes were also higher than in untreated cancer cells.

The effect of fatal carbon monoxide poisoning on the surface charge of blood cells

The objective of this investigation was to evaluate postmortem changes of electric charge of human erythrocytes and thrombocytes after fatal carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. The surface charge density values were determined on the basis of the electrophoretic mobility measurements of the cells carried out at various pH values of electrolyte solution. The surface charge of erythrocyte membranes after fatal CO poisoning as well as after sudden unexpected death increased compared to the control group in the whole range of experimental pH values. Also, a slight shift of the isoelectric point of erythrocyte membranes to high pH values was observed. The surface charge of thrombocyte membranes after fatal CO poisoning decreased at low pH compared to the control group. However, at high pH, the values increased compared to the control group. The isoelectric point of thrombocyte membranes after fatal CO poisoning was considerably shifted toward low pH values compared to the control group. The observed changes are probably connected with the destruction of blood cell structure.

Phospholipid composition and electric charge in healthy and cancerous parts of human kidneys

Phospholipids are ubiquitous in nature and are essential for the lipid bilayer of cell membranes. Their structural and functional properties are pivotal for the survival of the cell. In this study the phospholipids of healthy and cancerous human renal tissues from the same patients are compared with special reference to the electric charge of the membrane. A simple and highly effective normal-phase method is described for analyzing phospholipids content. This work is focused on changes of phospholipids content (PtdIns, phosphatidylinositol; PtdSer, phosphatidylserine; PtdEtn, phosphatidylethanoloamine; PtdCho, phosphatidylcholine) in cell membranes of renal cancer of pT1 stage, G2 grade, without metastasis. Surface charge density of healthy and cancerous human renal tissues was measured by electrophoresis. The measurements were carried out at various pH of solution. Depending on the surface charge density as a function of pH, acidic (C_TA) and basic (C_TB) functional group concentrations and their average association constants with hydrogen (K_AH) or hydroxyl (K_BOH) ions were evaluated. The process of cancer transformation was accompanied by an increase in total amount of phospholipids as well as an increase in C_TA and K_BOH, whereas K_AH and C_TB were decreased compared with unchanged tumor cells.

Changes in electric properties of human breast cancer cells

The change in biological functions of cells may affect the surface properties and can be detected by electrokinetic measurements. The surface density of fibroblasts and breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) as a function of pH was measured by electrophoresis. The interaction between solution ions and the breast cancer cell or fibroblast surface was described by a four-component equilibrium model. The agreement between the experimental and theoretical charge variation curves of the breast cancer cells and fibroblasts was good at pH 2.5–9. The extent of fibroblast and breast cancer cell lipid peroxidation was estimated by HPLC measurement of the malondialdehyde level. The acid (C_TA) and basic (C_TB) functional group concentrations and the average association constant with hydroxyl (K_BOH) ions values of the breast cancer cell membranes were higher than in normal cells, while the average association constant with hydrogen (K_AH) value was smaller. The level of lipid peroxidation products was higher in breast cancer cells than in normal cells.

Changes in surface-charge density of blood cells after sudden unexpected death

The objective of the investigation was evaluation of postmortem changes of electric charge of human erythrocyte and thrombocyte membranes after sudden unexpected death. The surface charge density values were determined on the basis of the electrophoretic mobility measurements of the cells carried out at various pHs of electrolyte solution. The interactions between both erythrocyte and thrombocyte membranes and electrolyte ions were studied. Values of parameters characterizing the membrane--that is, the total surface concentrations of both acidic and basic groups and their association constants with solution ions--were calculated on the basis of a four-equilibria mathematical model. The model was validated by comparison of these values to experimental data. We established that examined electric properties of the cell membranes are affected by sudden unexpected death. Postmortem processes occurring in the cell membranes can lead to disorders of existing equilibria, which in turn result in changes in values of all the above-mentioned parameters.

The interfacial tension of the lipid membrane formed from lipid-amino acid systems

The interfacial tension of lipid membranes composed of phosphatidylcholine (lecithin, PC)-valine (Val), phosphatidylcholine-isoleucine (Ile), phosphatidylcholine-tyrosine (Tyr), and phosphatidylcholine-phenylalanine (Phe) has been studied. The membrane components formed 1:1 complexes. The interfacial tension measurements were used to determine the membrane surface concentration A (3)(-1), the membrane interfacial tension γ(3), and the stability constant K.

The effect of contrast medium SonoVue® on the electric charge density of blood cells

The effect of contrast medium SonoVue® on the electric charge density of blood cells (erythrocytes and thrombocytes) was measured using a microelectrophoretic method. We examined the effect of adsorbed H⁺ and OH⁻ ions on the surface charge of erythrocytes or thrombocytes. Surface charge density values were determined from electrophoretic mobility measurements of blood cells performed at various pH levels. The interaction between solution ions and the erythrocyte's or thrombocyte's surface was described by a four-component equilibrium model. The agreement between the experimental and theoretical charge variation curves of the erythrocytes and thrombocytes was good at pH 2-9. The deviation observed at a higher pH may be caused by disregarding interactions between the functional groups of blood cells.

The equilibria of phosphatidylcholine-fatty acid and phosphatidylcholine-amine in monolayers at the air/water interface

Monolayers of phosphatidylcholine, fatty acid and amine and binary mixtures phosphatidylcholine-fatty acid or phosphatidylcholine-amine were investigated at the air/water interface. Phosphatidylcholine (lecithin, PC), stearic acid (SA), palmitic acid (PA), decanoic acid (DA) and decylamine (DE) were used to the experiment. The surface tension values of pure and mixed monolayers were used to calculate π-A isotherms. The surface tension measurements were carried out at 22°C using an improved Teflon trough and a Nima 9000 tensiometer. The Teflon trough was filled with a subphase of triple-distilled water. Known amounts of lipid dissolved in 1-chloropropane were placed at the surface using a syringe. The interactions between lecithin and fatty acid as well as phosphatidylcholine and amine result in significant deviations from the additivity rule. An equilibrium theory to describe the behaviour of monolayer components at the air/water interface was developed in order to obtain the stability constants of PC-SA, PC-PA, PC-DA and PC-DE complexes. We considered the equilibrium between the individual components and the complex and established that lecithin and fatty acid as well as phosphatidylcholine and amine formed highly stable 1:1 complexes.

Equilibria of phosphatidylcholine-Ca2+ ions in monolayer at the air/water interface

The effect of Ca(2+) ion interaction with monolayers of phosphatidylcholine (lecithin, L) was investigated at the air/water interface. We present surface tension measurements of lecithin monolayers obtained using a Langmuir method as a function of Ca(2+) ion concentration. The measurements were carried out at 22 degrees C using a Teflon trough and a Nima 9000 tensiometer. The interactions between lecithin and Ca(2+) ions result in significant deviations from the additivity rule. An equilibrium theory to describe the behavior of monolayer components at the air/water interface was developed in order to obtain the stability constants and area occupied by one molecule of LCa(+) and L(2)Ca complexes. The stability constants, K(1) = 1.92 x 10(3) m(2) mol(-1) and K(2) = 5.35 x 10(5) m(2) mol(-1) were calculated by inserting the experimental data. The value of area occupied by one LCa(+) complex is 65 A(2) molecule(-1), while the area occupied by an L(2)Ca complex is 117 A(2) molecule(-1).

Changes in Phospholipid Composition Studied by HPLC and Electric Properties of Liver Cell Membrane of Ethanol-Poisoned Rats

Ethanol introduced into the organism undergoes rapid metabolism to acetaldehyde and then to acetic acid. The process is accompanied by formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage mainly lipids of membrane cells. The effects of ROS can be neutralized by administering preparations with antioxidant properties. The natural preparations of this kind are teas.

This paper reports data on the effect of green and black tea on the surface charge density, content of phospholipids, and level of lipid peroxidation products of liver cell membrane of rats chronically intoxicated with ethanol. Surface charge density of liver cells was measured by the electrophoresis method, whereas qualitative phospholipid composition was determined by the HPLC method.

Ethanol administration caused an increase in the amount of all phospholipids, in surface charge density as well as in lipid peroxidation products. Ingestion of green and black tea with ethanol partially prevented these ethanol-induced changes, and the action of green tea was stronger than that of black tea.

Interfacial tension of the lipid membrane formed from lipid-fatty acid and lipid-amine systems

Interfacial tension has been determined for phosphatidylcholine-stearic acid and phosphatidylcholine-stearylamine membranes. Phosphatidylcholine, stearic acid and stearylamine were used in the experimental. The interfacial tension values of the pure components are 1.62x10(-3) N/m, - 1.54x10(-2) N/m and 4.40x10(-3) N/m (hypothetical values), respectively. The 1:1 complexes were formed during formation of phosphatidylcholine-stearic acid and phosphatidylcholine-stearylamine membranes. The following parameters describing the complexes were determined: the surface concentrations of the lipid membranes formed from these complexes, A(3)(-1), the interfacial tensions of such membranes, gamma(3) and the stability constants of these complexes, K.

The interfacial tension of the lipid membrane formed from lipid-cholesterol and lipid-lipid systems

Interfacial tension has been determined for phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol, phosphatidylcholine-phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylethanolamine-cholesterol membranes. Phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and cholesterol (Ch) were to be investigated, because of their presence in biological membranes. Interfacial tension values of pure components are 0.81 x 10(-3) N/m, 1.67 x 10(-3) N/m, and 2.36 x 10(-3) N/m, respectively. The 1:1 complexes were formed during formation of the PC-Ch, PC-PE, and PE-Ch lipid membranes. The following parameters describing the complexes were determined: A3(-1), the surface concentrations of the lipid membranes formed from these complexes; gamma3, the interfacial tensions of such membranes and K, the stability constants of these complexes.

Interfacial tension of phosphatidylcholine–phosphatidylserine system in bilayer lipid membrane

The effect of pH of electrolyte solution on the interfacial tension of lipid membrane formed of phosphatidylcholine (PC, lecithin)-phosphatidylserine (PS) system was studied. In this article, three models describing the H+ and OH- ions adsorption in the bilayer lipid surface are presented. In Model I and Model II, the surface is continuous with uniformly distributed functional groups constituting the centres of H+ and OH- ions adsorption while in the other the surface is built of lipid molecules, free or with attached H+ and OH- ions. In these models contribution of the individual lipid molecule forms to interfacial tension of the bilayer were assumed to be additive. In Model III the adsorption of the H+ and OH- ions at the PC-PS bilayer surface was described in terms of the Gibbs isotherm. Theoretical equations are derived to describe this dependence in the whole pH range.

Adsorption equilibria between liposome membrane formed of phosphatidylcholine and aqueous sodium chloride solution as a function of pH

The effect has been studied of the adsorption of ions (H(+), Na(+), OH(-), Cl(-)) which are present in solution upon the electric charge of the liposome membrane formed of phosphatidylcholine (PC). The surface charge density of the membrane was determined as a function of pH and electrolyte concentration from electrophoretic mobility measurements. The measurements were carried out by the laser-Doppler microelectrophoresis method. A four-equilibria model has been proposed to describe the phenomena occurring on the membrane surface. The equilibria in which the adsorption of other ions on the liposome membrane surface was involved were assumed to exist beside the equilibria in which the H(+) and OH(-) ions were engaged. The idea was confirmed by mathematical calculations. Association constants of the liposome membrane surface with ions of solution (K(AH), K(ANa), K(BOH), K(BCl)) were determined. The proposed model has been proved to be correct by comparing the resulting theoretic charge variation curves of the lecithin membrane with the experimental data.

Impedance analysis of lipid domains in phosphatidylcholine bilayer membranes containing ergosterol

The effect of ergosterol on the electrochemical features of the phosphatidylcholine bilayer membrane was investigated by impedance spectroscopy. The experimental impedance values obtained in the presence of different amounts of ergosterol showed evidence of domain structures within the bilayer containing < 0.06 molar fraction of ergosterol. Based on derived mathematical equations, the surface area of phospholipid/ergosterol domain was calculated; it amounts to 262 A(2). This value is consistent, taking into consideration the presented measurements as well as ordering and condensation effects of ergosterol, with a stoichiometry of such a domain equal to 3:1. The result of the investigation is the proposal of a new and simple method for the determination of the surface area and description stoichiometry of domains formed in any two-component system.

The effect of the presence of valinomycin on the interfacial tension of lecithin membrane

The effect of the presence of valinomycin in lecithin membrane on its interfacial tension has been studied. The experiments have been carried out at various forming solution compositions and at various potassium ion concentrations in electrolyte solution. Potassium chloride was used as the electrolyte. A complex was formed between the valinomycin molecule and K+ ion. The following parameters describing the complex were determined: K, the stability constant of the valinomycin-K+ complex and B, partition coefficient. These values are equal to 3.52 x 10(5) m3 mol(-1) and 6.0, respectively.

Impedance Analysis of Phosphatidylcholine/α-Tocopherol System in Bilayer Lipid Membranes

The effect of alpha-tocopherol on the electrochemical features of the phosphatidylcholine membrane was investigated by impedance spectroscopy. Phosphatidylcholine and alpha-tocopherol were chosen for the study because they are present in biological membranes and they fulfill essential functions in living organisms. The experimental impedance values obtained in the presence of different amounts of alpha-tocopherol showed evidence of domain structures within the bilayer containing less than 0.048 molar fraction of alpha-tocopherol. Based on derived mathematical equations, the surface area of phospholipid/alpha-tocopherol domain was calculated; it amounts to 832 A(2). This value is consistent, taking into consideration ordering and condensation effects of alpha-tocopherol, with the acknowledged, well documented, stoichiometry of such a domain of 10:1. The result of the investigation is the proposal of a new method for the determination of the surface area and description of the stoichiometry of domains formed in any two-component system.

The effect of interaction between K+ ions and gramicidin D on the lecithin membrane interfacial tension

The effect of the presence of gramicidin D in a lecithin membrane on its interfacial tension has been studied. The studies have been carried out at various forming solution compositions and at various potassium ion concentrations in the electrolyte solution. Potassium chloride was used as the electrolyte. The complex was formed between the gramicidin molecule and K(+) ion. The following parameters describing the complex were determined: the surface area occupied by GK(+) complex (A(GK(+))), the interfacial tension of the GK(+) membrane complex (gamma(GK+)), and the stability constant of the gramicidin-K(+) complex (K). These values are 156 A(2), 1.89 mN m(-1) and 0.033 m(3) mol(-1), respectively.

The effect of the presence of crown ether on ion transport across the lipid bilayer

We studied the electric properties of phosphatidylcholine bilayers modified with crown ether (dibenzo[18] crown-6). The studies were carried out for various crown ether concentrations in forming solutions and various potassium ion concentrations in electrolyte solutions. The presence of crown ether in the membrane influences the membrane's impedance; there is a reduction in its resistivity, a decrease in its resistance of phase transfer and an increase in its capacity of phase transfer with an increase in crown ether concentration in the bilayer and in K(+) ion concentration in the electrolyte solution.

Capacitance and resistance of the bilayer lipid membrane formed of phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol

Capacity and electric resistance of lipid membranes composed of lecithin and cholesterol were determined. The components were chosen for the study because they were present in biological membranes. Capacitance of the lecithin and cholesterol membranes amounts to 0.38 and 0.61 microF/cm(2), and resistance to 1.44(10(4)and 2.12(10(6)Omega cm(2), respectively. A 1:1 complex appears as a result of lecithin-cholesterol membrane formation. Parameters of the membrane formed of the lecithin-cholesterol complex were determined: surface concentration (Gamma(3)), capacitance (C(3)), and conductance (R;(3)(-1), as well as the stability constant (K) of the complex. The mean values of those magnitudes are as follows: 4.265(10(-6)mol/m(2), 0.54 microF/cm(2), 1.381(10(-6)Omega(-1)cm(-2)and 3.748(10(7), respectively.

Acid-base equilibria at interface separating electrolyte solution and lipid bilayer formed from phosphatidylcholine

The dependence of the interfacial tension of a lipid membrane formed from phosphatidylcholine on the pH of the aqueous solution has been studied. The model describing the H(+) and OH(-) ions adsorption in the bilayer lipid surface has been presented in this work. We take suitable equations to describe the dependence of interfacial tension of a lipid bilayer membrane on H(+) and OH(-) ion concentrations. A theoretical equation is derived to describe this dependence in the whole pH range.

Acid-base equilibria at interface separating electrolyte solution and lipid bilayer formed from phosphatidylserine

The dependence of the interfacial tension of a lipid membrane formed from phosphatidylserine on the pH of the aqueous solution has been studied. The model described the H(+) and OH(-) ions adsorption in the bilayer lipid surface has been presented in this work. We take suitable equations to describe the dependence of interfacial tension of a lipid bilayer membrane on H(+) and OH(-) ion concentrations. A theoretical equation is derived to describe this dependence in the range of pH, i.e. from 2 to 12.

Interfacial tension of bilayer lipid membrane formed from phosphatidylethanolamine

The dependence of the interfacial tension of a lipid membrane on the pH of the aqueous solution has been studied. Interfacial tension measurements of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) were carried out. A theoretical equation is derived to describe this dependence in the whole pH range. A maximum corresponding to the isoelectric point appears both in the theoretical equation and in the experimental data.

Effect of pH on the interfacial tension of bilayer lipid membrane formed from phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylserine

The effect of pH of an electrolyte solution on the interfacial tension of lipid membrane formed from phosphatidylcholine (PC) or phosphatidylserine (PS) was studied. The relationships were well described by an equation presented earlier based on the Gibbs isotherm but only in the proximity of the isoelectric point. Therefore, in this work models have been derived to describe the adsorption of the H(+) and OH(-) ions at lipid surfaces formed from PC or PS, which would reproduce changes in interfacial tension more correctly, particularly in the ranges distant from the isoelectric point. In one model, the surface is continuous with uniformly distributed functional groups constituting the centres of H(+) and OH(-) ion adsorption while in the other the surface is built of lipid molecules, free or with attached H(+) and OH(-) ions. In both models, the contributions of the individual lipid molecule forms to the interfacial tension of the bilayer were assumed to be additive.

Interfacial tension of phosphatidylcholine-cholesterol system in monolayers at the air/water interface

Interfacial tension of an egg lecithin-cholesterol system was measured across the whole concentration range. Surface pressure-area isotherm measurements were carried out in a Langmuir trough at the air/water interface at room temperature (22 degrees C). The interfacial tension of the air/water interface was divided into contributions of components. The interfacial tension of a 1:1 complex between phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol was calculated. Its value equals 18 mN/m. The difference between the stability constant of 1:1 complex in the bilayer and the monolayer at the air/water interface is discussed.

Effect of pH on the interfacial tension of lipid bilayer membrane

The dependence of the interfacial tension of a lipid bilayer on the pH of the aqueous solution has been studied. A theoretical equation is derived to describe this dependence. Interfacial tension measurements of an egg phosphatidylcholine bilayer were carried out. The experimental results agreed with those derived from the theoretical equation obtained close to the isoelectric point within a range of three pH units. A maximum corresponding to the isoelectric point appears both in the theoretical equation and in the experimental data.
