Creation of Interfacial S4 -Sn-N2 Electron Pathways for Efficient Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

Establishing effective charge transfer channels between two semiconductors is key to improving photocatalytic activity. However, controlling hetero-structures in situ and designing binding modes pose significant challenges. Herein, hydrolytic SnCl2 ·2H2 O is selected as the metal source and loaded in situ onto a layered carbon nitriden supramolecular precursor. A composite photocatalyst, S4 -Sn-N2 , with electron pathways of SnS2 and tubular carbon nitriden (TCN) is prepared through pyrolysis and vulcanization processes. The contact interface of SnS2 -TCN is increased significantly, promoting the formation of S4 -Sn-N2 micro-structure in a Z-scheme charge transfer channel. This structure accelerates the separation and transport of photogenerated carriers, maintains the stronger redox ability, and improves the stability of SnS2 in this series of heterojunctions. Therefore, the catalyst demonstrated exceptional photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency, achieving a reaction rate of 86.4 µmol h-1 , which is 3.15 times greater than that of bare TCN.

Activating the Basal Planes and Oxidized Oxygens in Layer-Structured Na0.6 CoO2 for Boosted OER Activity

With the CoO2 slabs consisting of Co4 O4 cubane structure, layered Nax CoO2 are considered promising candidates for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media given their earth-abundant and structural advantages. However, due to the strong adsorption of intermediates on the large basal planes, Nax CoO2 cannot meet the activity demands. Here, a novel one-pot synthesis strategy is proposed to realize the high solubility of iron in Nax CoO2 in an air atmosphere. The optimist Na0.6 Co0.9 Fe0.1 O2 exhibits enhanced OER activity compared to their pristine and other reported Fe-doped Nax CoO2 counterparts. Such an enhancement is mainly ascribed to the abundant active sites on the activated basal planes and the participation of oxidized oxygen as active sites independently, which breaks the scaling relationship limit in the OER process. This work is expected to contribute to the understanding of the modification mechanism of Fe-doped cobalt-based oxides and the exploitation of layer-structured oxides for energy application.

Sub-nanotesla sensitivity at the nanoscale with a single spin

High-sensitivity detection of the microscopic magnetic field is essential in many fields. Good sensitivity and high spatial resolution are mutually contradictory in measurement, which is quantified by the energy resolution limit. Here we report that a sensitivity of 0.5 nT/[Formula: see text] at the nanoscale is achieved experimentally by using nitrogen-vacancy defects in diamond with depths of tens of nanometers. The achieved sensitivity is substantially enhanced by integrating with multiple quantum techniques, including real-time-feedback initialization, dynamical decoupling with shaped pulses and repetitive readout via quantum logic. Our magnetic sensors will shed new light on searching new physics beyond the standard model, investigating microscopic magnetic phenomena in condensed matters, and detection of life activities at the sub-cellular scale.

Device-independent quantum randomness-enhanced zero-knowledge proof

Zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) is a fundamental cryptographic primitive that allows a prover to convince a verifier of the validity of a statement without leaking any further information. As an efficient variant of ZKP, noninteractive zero-knowledge proof (NIZKP) adopting the Fiat-Shamir heuristic is essential to a wide spectrum of applications, such as federated learning, blockchain, and social networks. However, the heuristic is typically built upon the random oracle model that makes ideal assumptions about hash functions, which does not hold in reality and thus undermines the security of the protocol. Here, we present a quantum solution to the problem. Instead of resorting to a random oracle model, we implement a quantum randomness service. This service generates random numbers certified by the loophole-free Bell test and delivers them with postquantum cryptography (PQC) authentication. By employing this service, we conceive and implement NIZKP of the three-coloring problem. By bridging together three prominent research themes, quantum nonlocality, PQC, and ZKP, we anticipate this work to inspire more innovative applications that combine quantum information science and the cryptography field.

Stacking Arrangement and Orientation of Aromatic Cations Tune Bandgap and Charge Transport of 2D Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites

Chemical modifications on aromatic spacers of 2D perovskites have been demonstrated to be an effective strategy to simultaneously improve optoelectronic properties and stability. However, its underlying mechanism is poorly understood. By using 2D phenyl-based perovskites ([C6 H5 (CH2 )m NH3 ]2 PbI4 ) as models, the authors have revealed how the chemical nature of aromatic cations tunes the bandgap and charge transport of 2D perovskites by utilizing sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy to determine the stacking arrangement and orientation of aromatic cations. It is found that the antiparallel slip-stack arrangement of phenyl rings between adjacent layers induces an indirect band gap, resulting in anomalous carrier dynamics. Incorporation of the CH2 moiety causes stacking rearrangement of the phenyl ring and thus promotes an indirect to direct bandgap transition. In direct-bandgap perovskites, higher carrier mobility correlates with a larger orientation angle of the phenyl ring. Further optimizing the orientation angle by introducing a para-substituted element in a phenyl ring, higher carrier mobility is obtained. This work highlights the importance of leveraging stacking arrangement and orientation of the aromatic cations to tune the photophysical properties, which opens up an avenue for advancing high-performance 2D perovskites optoelectronics via molecular engineering.

Large Improvement of Thermoelectric Performance by Magnetism in Co-Based Full-Heusler Alloys

Full-Heusler alloys (fHAs) exhibit high mechanical strength with earth-abundant elements, but their metallic properties tend to display small electron diffusion thermopower, limiting potential applications as excellent thermoelectric (TE) materials. Here, it is demonstrated that the Co-based fHAs Co2 XAl (X = Ti, V, Nb) exhibit relatively high thermoelectric performance due to spin and charge coupling. Thermopower contributions from different magnetic mechanisms, including spin fluctuation and magnon drag are extracted. A significant contribution to thermopower from magnetism compared to that from electron diffusion is demonstrated. In Co2 TiAl, the contribution to thermopower from spin fluctuation is higher than that from electron diffusion, resulting in an increment of 280 µW m-1  K-2 in the power factor value. Interestingly, the thermopower contribution from magnon drag can reach up to -47 µV K-1 , which is over 2400% larger than the electron diffusion thermopower. The power factor of Co2 TiAl can reach 4000 µW m-1  K-2 which is comparable to that of conventional semiconducting TE materials. Moreover, the corresponding figure of merit zT can reach ≈0.1 at room temperature, which is significantly larger than that of traditional metallic materials. The work shows a promising unconventional way to create and optimize TE materials by introducing magnetism.

A spin-mechanical quantum chip for exploring exotic interactions

How to illuminate dark matter has become the foremost open question in fundamental science nowadays, which is of great significance in understanding the laws of nature. Exploring exotic interactions beyond the standard model is one of the essential approaches to searching for dark matter particles. Although it has been explored in a variety of lab-scale and tabletop-scale setups over the past years, no such interactions have been observed, and improving the sensitivity significantly becomes of paramount importance, but challenging. Here, we formulate the conception of a spin-mechanical quantum chip compatible with scalable on-chip detectors. Utilizing the prototype chip realized by the integration of a mechanical resonator and a diamond with single nitrogen vacancy at the microscale, the constraints of spin-velocity-dependent interactions have been improved by two orders of magnitude, where there is no evidence for new bosons in the force range below 100 nm, i.e., in the rest-mass window of 2-10 electronvolts. Based on the proof-of-principle experiment, this promising chip can be scaled up to meet the requirements of searching for exotic interactions at preeminent sensitivity. Low-cost and high-yield chip-scale setups will accelerate the process of dark matter exploration, providing a path toward on-chip fundamental physics experiments.

Promoting Photocatalytic H2 Evolution through Retarded Charge Trapping and Recombination by Continuously Distributed Defects in Methylammonium Lead Iodide Perovskite

Inspired by its great success in the photovoltaic field, methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI3 ) has recently been actively explored as photocatalysts in H2 evolution reactions. However, the practical application of MAPbI3 photocatalysts remains hampered by the intrinsically fast trapping and recombination of photogenerated charges. Herein, we propose a novel strategy of regulating the distribution of defective areas to promote charge-transfer dynamics of MAPbI3 photocatalysts. By deliberately designing and synthesizing the MAPbI3 photocatalysts featuring a unique continuation of defective areas, we demonstrate that such a feature enables retardation of charge trapping and recombination via lengthening the charge-transfer distance. As an outcome, such MAPbI3 photocatalysts turn out to achieve an impressive photocatalytic H2 evolution rate as high as 0.64 mmol ⋅ g-1  ⋅ h-1 , one order of magnitude higher than that of the conventional MAPbI3 photocatalysts. This work establishes a new paradigm for controlling charge-transfer dynamics in photocatalysis.

Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution Based on Decoherence-Free Subspaces with Logical Bell State Analyzer

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) enables two legitimate users to generate shared information-theoretic secure keys with immunity to all detector side attacks. However, the original proposal using polarization encoding is sensitive to polarization rotations stemming from birefringence in fibers or misalignment. To overcome this problem, here we propose a robust QKD protocol without detector vulnerabilities based on decoherence-free subspaces using polarization-entangled photon pairs. A logical Bell state analyzer is designed specifically for such encoding. The protocol exploits common parametric down-conversion sources, for which we develop a MDI-decoy-state method, and requires neither complex measurements nor a shared reference frame. We have analyzed the practical security in detail and presented a numerical simulation under various parameter regimes, showing the feasibility of the logical Bell state analyzer along with the potential that double communication distance can be achieved without a shared reference frame.

mech2d: An Efficient Tool for High-Throughput Calculation of Mechanical Properties for Two-Dimensional Materials

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been a research hot topic in the passed decades due to their unique and fascinating properties. Among them, mechanical properties play an important role in their application. However, there lacks an effective tool for high-throughput calculating, analyzing and visualizing the mechanical properties of 2D materials. In this work, we present the mech2d package, a highly automated toolkit for calculating and analyzing the second-order elastic constants (SOECs) tensor and relevant properties of 2D materials by considering their symmetry. In the mech2d, the SOECs can be fitted by both the strain-energy and stress-strain approaches, where the energy or strain can be calculated by a first-principles engine, such as VASP. As a key feature, the mech2d package can automatically submit and collect the tasks from a local or remote machine with robust fault-tolerant ability, making it suitable for high-throughput calculation. The present code has been validated by several common 2D materials, including graphene, black phosphorene, GeSe2 and so on.

Digital Magnetic Detection of Biomolecular Interactions with Single Nanoparticles

Biomolecular interactions compose a fundamental element of all life forms and are the biological basis of many biomedical assays. However, current methods for detecting biomolecular interactions have limitations in sensitivity and specificity. Here, using nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond as quantum sensors, we demonstrate digital magnetic detection of biomolecular interactions with single magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). We first developed a single-particle magnetic imaging (SiPMI) method on 100 nm-sized MNPs with negligible magnetic background, high signal stability, and accurate quantification. The single-particle method was performed on biotin-streptavidin interactions and DNA-DNA interactions in which a single-base mismatch was specifically differentiated. Subsequently, SARS-CoV-2-related antibodies and nucleic acids were examined by a digital immunomagnetic assay derived from SiPMI. In addition, a magnetic separation process improved the detection sensitivity and dynamic range by more than 3 orders of magnitude and also the specificity. This digital magnetic platform is applicable to extensive biomolecular interaction studies and ultrasensitive biomedical assays.

Selective binding and periodic arrangement of magic boron clusters on monolayer borophene

The synthesis and characterization of small boron clusters with unique size and regular arrangement are crucial for boron chemistry and two-dimensional borophene materials. In this study, together with theoretical calculations, the joint molecular beam epitaxy and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments achieve the formation of unique B5 clusters on monolayer borophene (MLB) on a Cu(111) surface. The B5 clusters tend to selectively bind to specific sites of MLB with covalent boron-boron bonds in the periodic arrangement, which can be ascribed to the charge distribution and electron delocalization character of MLB and also prohibits nearby co-adsorption of B5 clusters. Furthermore, the close-packed adsorption of B5 clusters would facilitate the synthesis of bilayer borophene, exhibiting domino effect-like growth mode. The successful growth and characterization of uniform boron clusters on a surface enrich the boron-based nanomaterials and reveal the essential role of small clusters during the growth of borophene.

Toward a New Era of SERS and TERS at the Nanometer Scale: From Fundamentals to Innovative Applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) have opened a variety of exciting research fields. However, although a vast number of applications have been proposed since the two techniques were first reported, none has been applied to real practical use. This calls for an update in the recent fundamental and application studies of SERS and TERS. Thus, the goals and scope of this review are to report new directions and perspectives of SERS and TERS, mainly from the viewpoint of combining their mechanism and application studies. Regarding the recent progress in SERS and TERS, this review discusses four main topics: (1) nanometer to subnanometer plasmonic hotspots for SERS; (2) Ångström resolved TERS; (3) chemical mechanisms, i.e., charge-transfer mechanism of SERS and semiconductor-enhanced Raman scattering; and (4) the creation of a strong bridge between the mechanism studies and applications.

Planar defect-free pure red perovskite light-emitting diodes via metastable phase crystallization

Solution-processable all-inorganic CsPbI_3-xBr_x perovskite holds great potential for pure red light-emitting diodes. However, the widely existing defects in this mixed halide perovskite markedly limit the efficiency and stability of present light-emitting diode devices. We here identify that intragrain Ruddlesden-Popper planar defects are primary forms of such defects in the CsPbI_3-xBr_x thin film owing to the lattice strain caused by inhomogeneous halogen ion distribution. To eliminate these defects, we develop a stepwise metastable phase crystallization strategy to minimize the CsPbI_3-xBr_x perovskite lattice strain, which brings planar defect-free CsPbI_3-xBr_x thin film with improved radiative recombination, narrowed emission band, and enhanced spectral stability. Using these high-quality thin films, we fabricate spectrally stable pure red perovskite light-emitting diodes, showing 17.8% external quantum efficiency and 9000 candela meter^-2 brightness with color coordinates required by Rec. 2020.

Self-aligned patterning technique for fabricating high-performance diamond sensor arrays with nanoscale precision

Efficient, nanoscale precision alignment of defect center creation in photonics structures in challenges the realization of high-performance photonic devices and quantum technology applications. Here, we propose a facile self-aligned patterning technique based on conventional engineering technology, with doping precision that can reach ~15 nm. We demonstrate this technique by fabricating diamond nanopillar sensor arrays with high consistency and near-optimal photon counts. The sensor array achieves high yield approaching the theoretical limit, and high efficiency for filtering sensors with different numbers of nitrogen vacancy centers. Combined with appropriate crystal orientation, the system achieves a saturated fluorescence rate of 4.34 Mcps and effective fluorescence-dependent detection sensitivity of 1800 cps^-1/2 . These sensors also show enhanced spin properties in the isotope-enriched diamond. Our technique is applicable to all similar solid-state systems and could facilitate the development of parallel quantum sensing and scalable information processing.

Enhanced emission directivity from asymmetrically strained colloidal quantum dots

Current state-of-the-art quantum dot light-emitting diodes have reached close to unity internal quantum efficiency. Further improvement in external quantum efficiency requires more efficient photon out-coupling. Improving the directivity of the photon emission is considered to be the most feasible approach. Here, we report improved emission directivity from colloidal quantum dot films. By growing an asymmetric compressive shell, we are able to lift their band-edge state degeneracy, which leads to an overwhelming population of exciton with in-plane dipole moment, as desired for high-efficiency photon out-coupling. The in-plane dipole proportion determined by back-focal plane imaging method is 88%, remarkably higher than 70% obtained from conventional hydrostatically strained colloidal quantum dots. Enhanced emission directivity obtained here opens a path to increasing the external quantum efficiencies notably.

Optical Images of Molecular Vibronic Couplings from Tip-Enhanced Fluorescence Excitation Spectroscopy

Tip-based photoemission spectroscopic techniques have now achieved subnanometer resolution that allows visualization of the chemical structure and even the ground-state vibrational modes of a single molecule. However, the ability to visualize the interplay between electronic and nuclear motions of excited states, i.e., vibronic couplings, is yet to be explored. Herein, we theoretically propose a new technique, namely, tip-enhanced fluorescence excitation (TEFE). TEFE takes advantage of the highly confined plasmonic field and thus can offer a possibility to directly visualize the vibronic effect of a single molecule in real space for arbitrary excited states in a given energy window. Numerical simulations for a single porphine molecule confirm that vibronic couplings originating from Herzberg-Teller (HT) active modes can be visually identified. TEFE further enables high-order vibrational transitions that are normally suppressed in the other plasmon-based processes. Images of the combination vibrational transitions have the same pattern as that of their parental HT active mode's fundamental transition, providing a direct protocol for measurements of the activity of Franck-Condon modes of selected excited states. These findings strongly suggest that TEFE is a powerful strategy to identify the involvement of molecular moieties in the complicated electron-nuclear interactions of the excited states at the single-molecule level.

Generation of Spin Defects by Ion Implantation in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Optically addressable spin defects in wide-band-gap semiconductors as promising systems for quantum information and sensing applications have recently attracted increased attention. Spin defects in two-dimensional materials are expected to show superiority in quantum sensing due to their atomic thickness. Here, we demonstrate that an ensemble of negatively charged boron vacancies (VB -) with good spin properties in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) can be generated by ion implantation. We carry out optically detected magnetic resonance measurements at room temperature to characterize the spin properties of ensembles of VB - defects, showing a zero-field splitting frequency of ∼3.47 GHz. We compare the photoluminescence intensity and spin properties of VB - defects generated using different implantation parameters, such as fluence, energy, and ion species. With the use of the proper parameters, we can successfully create VB - defects with a high probability. Our results provide a simple and practicable method to create spin defects in hBN, which is of great significance for realizing integrated hBN-based devices.

Understanding Single-Atom Catalysis in View of Theory

In the past decade, isolated single atoms have been successfully dispersed on various substrates, with their potential applications being intensively investigated in different reactions. While the essential target of research in single-atom catalysis is the precise synthesis of stable single-atom catalysts (SACs) with clear configurations and impressive catalytic performance, theoretical investigations have also played important roles in identifying active sites, revealing catalytic mechanisms, and establishing structure-activity relationships. Nevertheless, special attention should still be paid in theoretical works to the particularity of SACs. In this Perspective, we will summarize the theoretical progress made on the understanding of the rich phenomena in single-atom catalysis. We focus on the determination of local structures of SACs via comparison between experiments and simulations, the discovery of distinctive catalytic mechanisms induced by multiadsorption, synergetic effects, and dynamic evolutions, to name a few, the proposal of criteria for theoretically designing SACs, and the extension of original concepts of single-atom catalysis. We hope that this Perspective will inspire more in-depth thinking on future theoretical studies of SACs.

Accurate Machine Learning Prediction of Protein Circular Dichroism Spectra with Embedded Density Descriptors

A data-driven approach to simulate circular dichroism (CD) spectra is appealing for fast protein secondary structure determination, yet the challenge of predicting electric and magnetic transition dipole moments poses a substantial barrier for the goal. To address this problem, we designed a new machine learning (ML) protocol in which ordinary pure geometry-based descriptors are replaced with alternative embedded density descriptors and electric and magnetic transition dipole moments are successfully predicted with an accuracy comparable to first-principle calculation. The ML model is able to not only simulate protein CD spectra nearly 4 orders of magnitude faster than conventional first-principle simulation but also obtain CD spectra in good agreement with experiments. Finally, we predicted a series of CD spectra of the Trp-cage protein associated with continuous changes of protein configuration along its folding path, showing the potential of our ML model for supporting real-time CD spectroscopy study of protein dynamics.

Search for exotic spin-dependent interactions with a spin-based amplifier

Development of new techniques to search for particles beyond the standard model is crucial for understanding the ultraviolet completion of particle physics. Several hypothetical particles are predicted to mediate exotic spin-dependent interactions between standard-model particles that may be accessible to laboratory experiments. However, laboratory searches are mostly conducted for static spin-dependent interactions, with a few experiments addressing spin- and velocity-dependent interactions. Here, we demonstrate a search for these interactions with a spin-based amplifier. Our technique uses hyperpolarized nuclear spins as an amplifier for pseudo-magnetic fields produced by exotic interactions by a factor of more than 100. Using this technique, we establish constraints on the spin- and velocity-dependent interactions between polarized neutrons and unpolarized nucleons for the force range of 0.03 to 100 meters, improving previous constraints by at least two orders of magnitude in partial force range. This technique can be further extended to investigate other exotic spin-dependent interactions.

Resonant quantum principal component analysis

Principal component analysis (PCA) has been widely adopted to reduce the dimension of data while preserving the information. The quantum version of PCA (qPCA) can be used to analyze an unknown low-rank density matrix by rapidly revealing the principal components of it, i.e., the eigenvectors of the density matrix with the largest eigenvalues. However, because of the substantial resource requirement, its experimental implementation remains challenging. Here, we develop a resonant analysis algorithm with minimal resource for ancillary qubits, in which only one frequency-scanning probe qubit is required to extract the principal components. In the experiment, we demonstrate the distillation of the first principal component of a 4 × 4 density matrix, with an efficiency of 86.0% and a fidelity of 0.90. This work shows the speedup ability of quantum algorithm in dimension reduction of data and thus could be used as part of quantum artificial intelligence algorithms in the future.

Real-time GW-BSE investigations on spin-valley exciton dynamics in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide

We develop an ab initio nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) method based on GW plus real-time Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW + rtBSE-NAMD) for the spin-resolved exciton dynamics. From investigations on MoS₂, we provide a comprehensive picture of spin-valley exciton dynamics where the electron-phonon (e-ph) scattering, spin-orbit interaction (SOI), and electron-hole (e-h) interactions come into play collectively. In particular, we provide a direct evidence that e-h exchange interaction plays a dominant role in the fast valley depolarization within a few picoseconds, which is in excellent agreement with experiments. Moreover, there are bright-to-dark exciton transitions induced by e-ph scattering and SOI. Our study proves that e-h many-body effects are essential to understand the spin-valley exciton dynamics in transition metal dichalcogenides and the newly developed GW + rtBSE-NAMD method provides a powerful tool for exciton dynamics in extended systems with time, space, momentum, energy, and spin resolution.

Determining the Effect of Hot Electron Dissipation on Molecular Scattering Experiments at Metal Surfaces

Nonadiabatic effects that arise from the concerted motion of electrons and atoms at comparable energy and time scales are omnipresent in thermal and light-driven chemistry at metal surfaces. Excited (hot) electrons can measurably affect molecule-metal reactions by contributing to state-dependent reaction probabilities. Vibrational state-to-state scattering of NO on Au(111) has been one of the most studied examples in this regard, providing a testing ground for developing various nonadiabatic theories. This system is often cited as the prime example for the failure of electronic friction theory, a very efficient model accounting for dissipative forces on metal-adsorbed molecules due to the creation of hot electrons in the metal. However, the exact failings compared to experiment and their origin from theory are not established for any system because dynamic properties are affected by many compounding simulation errors of which the quality of nonadiabatic treatment is just one. We use a high-dimensional machine learning representation of electronic structure theory to minimize errors that arise from quantum chemistry. This allows us to perform a comprehensive quantitative analysis of the performance of nonadiabatic molecular dynamics in describing vibrational state-to-state scattering of NO on Au(111) and compare directly to adiabatic results. We find that electronic friction theory accurately predicts elastic and single-quantum energy loss but underestimates multiquantum energy loss and overestimates molecular trapping at high vibrational excitation. Our analysis reveals that multiquantum energy loss can potentially be remedied within friction theory whereas the overestimation of trapping constitutes a genuine breakdown of electronic friction theory. Addressing this overestimation for dynamic processes in catalysis and surface chemistry will likely require more sophisticated theories.

Metasurface enabled quantum edge detection

Metasurfaces consisting of engineered dielectric or metallic structures provide unique solutions to realize exotic phenomena including negative refraction, achromatic focusing, electromagnetic cloaking, and so on. The intersection of metasurface and quantum optics may lead to new opportunities but is much less explored. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate that a polarization-entangled photon source can be used to switch ON or OFF the optical edge detection mode in an imaging system based on a high-efficiency dielectric metasurface. This experiment enriches both fields of metasurface and quantum optics, representing a promising direction toward quantum edge detection and image processing with remarkable signal-to-noise ratio.

Kilohertz electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy of single nitrogen centers at zero magnetic field

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is among the most important analytical tools in physics, chemistry, and biology. The emergence of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, serving as an atomic-sized magnetometer, has promoted this technique to single-spin level, even under ambient conditions. Despite the enormous progress in spatial resolution, the current megahertz spectral resolution is still insufficient to resolve key heterogeneous molecular information. A major challenge is the short coherence times of the sample electron spins. Here, we address this challenge by using a magnetic noise-insensitive transition between states of different symmetry. We demonstrate a 27-fold narrower spectrum of single substitutional nitrogen (P1) centers in diamond with a linewidth of several kilohertz, and then some weak couplings can be resolved. Those results show both spatial and spectral advances of NV center-based EPR and provide a route toward analytical (EPR) spectroscopy at the single-molecule level.

Breaking the quantum adiabatic speed limit by jumping along geodesics

Quantum adiabatic evolutions find a broad range of applications in quantum physics and quantum technologies. The traditional form of the quantum adiabatic theorem limits the speed of adiabatic evolution by the minimum energy gaps of the system Hamiltonian. Here, we experimentally show using a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond that, even in the presence of vanishing energy gaps, quantum adiabatic evolution is possible. This verifies a recently derived necessary and sufficient quantum adiabatic theorem and offers paths to overcome the conventionally assumed constraints on adiabatic methods. By fast modulation of dynamic phases, we demonstrate near-unit-fidelity quantum adiabatic processes in finite times. These results challenge traditional views and provide deeper understanding on quantum adiabatic processes, as well as promising strategies for the control of quantum systems.

Nanoscale magnetic imaging of ferritins in a single cell

The in situ measurement of the distribution of biomolecules inside a cell is one of the important goals in life science. Among various imaging techniques, magnetic imaging (MI) based on the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond provides a powerful tool for the biomolecular research, while the nanometer-scale MI of intracellular proteins remains a challenge. Here, we use ferritin as a demonstration to realize the MI of endogenous proteins in a single cell using the NV center as the sensor. With the scanning, intracellular ferritins are imaged with a spatial resolution of ca. 10 nm, and ferritin-containing organelles are colocalized by correlative MI and electron microscopy. The approach paves the way for nanoscale MI of intracellular proteins.

Beating the channel capacity limit for superdense coding with entangled ququarts

Quantum superdense coding protocols enhance channel capacity by using shared quantum entanglement between two users. The channel capacity can be as high as 2 when one uses entangled qubits. However, this limit can be surpassed by using high-dimensional entanglement. We report an experiment that exceeds the limit using high-quality entangled ququarts with fidelities up to 0.98, demonstrating a channel capacity of 2.09 ± 0.01. The measured channel capacity is also higher than that obtained when transmitting only one ququart. We use the setup to transmit a five-color image with a fidelity of 0.952. Our experiment shows the great advantage of high-dimensional entanglement and will stimulate research on high-dimensional quantum information processes.
