Role of parental smoking and environmental tobacco smoke exposure in childhood cancer: A study using hair cotinine analysis and questionnaires. Pediatr Blood Cancer 2024; 71:e31007. Abstract
OBJECTIVES In the etiology of childhood cancers, many genetic and environmental factors play a role. One of these factors could be cigarette smoking, and the main source of tobacco smoke exposure of children is parental smoking. However, establishing a causal relationship between parental smoking and childhood cancers has proven challenging due to difficulties in accurately detecting tobacco smoke exposure METHODS: To address this issue, we used hair cotinine analysis and a questionnaire to get information about tobacco smoke exposures of pediatric cancer patients and healthy children. A total of 104 pediatric cancer patients and 99 healthy children participated in our study. Parental smoking behaviors (pre-conceptional, during pregnancy, and current smoking) and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposures of children are compared. RESULTS We have found no differences between two groups by means of maternal smoking behaviors. However, the rates of paternal pre-conceptional smoking and smoking during pregnancy were significantly low in cancer patients (p < .05). These data suggest that social desirability bias among fathers of cancer patients may have contributed to this discrepancy. According to questionnaire, cancer patients had significantly lower ETS exposures than healthy children (p < .05). However, ETS exposure assessment through cotinine analysis demonstrated that cancer patients had higher exposure to ETS compared to healthy children (p < .001). CONCLUSION Our findings provide evidence supporting the potential role of smoking as a risk factor for childhood cancers. This study also revealed that questionnaires could cause biases. We suggest that cotinine analysis along with validated questionnaires can be used to prevent biases in studies of tobacco smoke in the etiology of childhood cancers.

Abstract
Circular polarization-resolved Raman scattering methods include Raman optical activity (ROA) and its derivative─surface-enhanced Raman optical activity (SEROA). These spectroscopic modalities are rapidly developing due to their high information content, stand-off capabilities, and rapid development of Raman-active chiral nanostructures. These methods enable a direct readout of the vibrational energy levels of chiral molecules, crystals, and nanostructured materials, making it possible to study complex interactions and the dynamic interfaces between them. They were shown to be particularly valuable for nano- and biotechnological fields encompassing complex particles with nanoscale chirality that combine strong scattering and intense polarization rotation. This perspective dives into recent advancements in ROA and SEROA, their distinction from surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and the potential of these information-rich label-free spectroscopies for the detection of chiral biomolecules.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a relapsing disease described as excessive use of alcohol. Evidence of the role of DNA methylation in addiction is accumulating. Ghrelin is an important peptide known as appetite hormone and its role in addictive behavior has been identified. Here we aimed to determine the methylation levels of two crucial genes (GHRL and GHSR) in ghrelin signaling and further investigate the association between methylation ratios and plasma ghrelin levels. METHODS Individuals diagnosed with (n = 71) and without (n = 82) AUD were recruited in this study. DNA methylation levels were measured through methylation-sensitive high-resolution melting (MS-HRM). Acylated ghrelin levels were detected by ELISA. The GHRL rs696217 polymorphism was analyzed by the standard PCR-RFLP method. RESULTS GHRL was significantly hypermethylated (P < 0.0022) in AUD between 25 and 50% methylation than in control subjects but no significant changes of GHSR methylation were observed. Moreover, GHRL showed significant positive correlation of methylation ratio between 25 and 50% with age. A significant positive correlation between GHSR methylation and ghrelin levels in the AUD group was determined (P = 0.037). The level of GHRL methylation and the ghrelin levels showed a significant association in the control subjects (P = 0.042). CONCLUSION GHSR and GHRL methylation levels did not change significantly between control and AUD groups. However, GHRL and GHSR methylations seemed to have associations with plasma ghrelin levels in two groups. This is the first study investigating the DNA methylation of GHRL and GHSR genes in AUD.

Abstract
Garlic is rich in bioactive compounds that are effective against colon cancer cells. This study tests the antioxidant and antiproliferative effects of cold-extracted white and black garlic extracts. Black garlic extracted in water (SSU) exhibits the highest antioxidant activity, phenolic content, and flavonoid content, while black garlic extracted in ethanol (SET) shows the lowest values. Caspase-3 activity is notably higher in the white garlic extracted in methanol (BME), white garlic extracted in methanol combines with 5-FU, black garlic extracted in ethanol (SET), black garlic extracted in ethanol combines with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), and 5-FU treatments compare to the control group (p > 0.05). BME+5-FU displays the highest caspase-8 activity (p < 0.05). A decrease in NF-κB levels is observed in the SET+5-FU group (p>0.05), while COX-2 activities decrease in the BME, SET+5-FU, SET, and 5-FU groups (p>0.05). Wound healing increases in the BME, BME+5-FU, SET+5-FU, and 5-FU groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, aqueous black garlic extract may exhibit pro-oxidant activity despite its high antioxidant capacity. It is worth noting that exposure to heat-treated food and increased sugar content may lead to heightened inflammation and adverse health effects. This study is the first to combine garlic with chemo-preventive drugs like 5-FU in Caco-2 cells.

Abstract
Self-care behavior covers individual's health, life and well-being to maintain the necessary activities. The aim of this study is to examine the self-care and possible anxiolytic effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIT). Eight-week-old Wistar Albino male rats were divided into Control (n = 8), and Exercise (n = 8). Rat exercised for 38 min a day, 5 days a week, for 8 weeks The animals were then subjected to open field test and splash test, and the behaviors were video recorded. Student t test and Shapiro-Wilk test were used as statistical tests. In the exercise group, spray-induced grooming behavior increased significantly in terms of duration and frequency (p < 0.05), but no significant difference was observed in the latency of grooming (p > 0.05). In the open-field test, the total distance traveled, which is a locomotor activity parameter, did not change between the groups. Anxiolytic-like behaviors such as total rearing behavior, unsupported rearing, central time, and central region entries increased remarkably in the exercise group vs. control (p < 0.0001). Freezing as an anxiogenic behavior decreased in the exercise group positively (p < 0.0001). Intermittent high-intensity exercise improved and increased self-care behaviors. Further, the present study shows that HIIT has beneficial effects on different aspects of behaviors such as exploratory behaviors, increasing anxiolytic behaviors, and reducing anxiogenic behavior. The present study is a preclinical study that will pave the way for new studies.

Abstract
Multidrug-resistant strains of Acinetobacter baumannii cause major nosocomial infections. Bacteriophages that are specific to the bacterial species and destroy bacteria can be effectively used for treatment. In this study, we characterized lytic bacteriophages specific to A. baumannii strains. We isolated lytic bacteriophages from environmental water samples and then investigated their morphology, host range, growth characteristics, stability, genome analysis, and biofilm destruction on the catheter surface. Our results showed that the efficacy of the phages varied between 32% and 78%, tested on 78 isolates of A. baumannii; 80 phages were isolated, and two lytic bacteriophages, vB_AbaP_HB01 (henceforth called C2 phage) and vB_AbaM_HB02 (henceforth called K3 phage), were selected for characterization. Electron microscopy scans revealed that the C2 and K3 phages were members of the Podoviridae and Myoviridae families, respectively. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the sequence of the C2 phage is available in the NCBI database (accession number: OP917929.1), and it was found sequence identity with Acinetobacter phage AB1 18%, the K3 phage DNA sequence is closely related to Acinetobacter phage vB_AbaM_phiAbaA1 (94% similarity). The cocktail of C2 and K3 phages demonstrated a promising decrease in the bacterial cell counts of the biofilm after 4 h. Under a scanning electron microscope, the cocktail treatment destructed the biofilm on the catheter. We propose that the phage cocktail could be a strong alternative to antibiotics to control the A. baumannii biofilm in catheter infections.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preservatives are a frequent cause of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and have caused numerous epidemics. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of preservative sensitivity, assess the change in the frequency of sensitivity, identify new preservatives with increased sensitivity rates, and evaluate the situation in Turkey by comparing our findings with current literature. METHODS A total of 201 patients diagnosed with ACD between 2018 and 2020, were patch tested with the European baseline series and additional seven preservative haptens. The change in the prevalence of sensitivity to each preservative hapten was investigated by comparing the data from the study conducted in our department between 2000 and 2004. RESULTS Results showed that 17.4% (n = 35) of the patients were positive to preservatives. Comparison with previous data from 2000 to 2004 revealed an increase in the frequency of sensitization. The most prevalent allergen was methyldibromo glutaronitrile (9.5%), followed by methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (6.5%), and methylisothiazolinone (5%). CONCLUSION The increase in preservative sensitivity in Turkey is the most remarkable finding. Although MDBGN was prohibited in cosmetic products, MCI/MI and MI are still widely used. Our findings suggest that awareness of preservative sensitivity should be increased and additional precautions should be taken, also in Turkey, regarding the use of preservatives.

Abstract
To enhance the optical limiting behavior triggered by nonlinear absorption (NA), wide-band gap MnO2 nanoparticles were incorporated into polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) polymer nanofibers at various concentrations. SEM images of the composite nanofibers showed that MnO2 nanoparticles are well entrapped in the nanofibers. With an increase in MnO2 nanofiller concentration, a widened optical band gap energy and an increased Urbach energy were observed. As the concentration of MnO2 nanofiller in PVP increased, the NA behavior became more pronounced but weakened with higher input intensity. This behavior was attributed to the filling of the localized defect states by one photon absorption (OPA). The NA mechanisms of the composite nanofibers were examined, considering their band gap energies and localized defect states. Although all of the composite nanofibers had OPA, sequential/simultaneous two photon absorption (TPA), and excited state absorption mechanisms, the higher concentration of the MnO2 nanofiller led to stronger NA behavior due to its more defective structure. The highest optical limiting behavior was observed for composite nanofibers with the highest concentration of MnO2 nanofiller. The results obtained show that these composite nanofibers with a high linear transmittance and an extended band gap energy can be used in optoelectronic applications that can operate in a wide spectral range. Furthermore, their robust NA behavior, coupled with their promising optical limiting characteristics, positions them as strong contenders for effective optical limiting applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anthocyanins are responsible for both attractive colour of pomegranate juice (PJ) and its health-promoting effects against cancer and coronary heart disease. However, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) at some concentrations causes anthocyanin degradation. The present study aimed to reduce the degradation of PJ anthocyanins as a result of HMF at various concentrations (0-20 mg L-1 ) through phenolic acid [PA; ferulic (FA), gallic (GA) and caffeic acids (CA)] copigmentation during storage at 20 °C. RESULTS A strong correlation (r = 0.872) was found between anthocyanin degradation rate and HMF concentration in PJ without PA addition. An increase in HMF concentration during storage caused faster (< 32%) anthocyanin degradation. However, PA addition reduced (< 60 times) the HMF formation rate. The lowest HMF formation rates (0.07-0.28 day-1 ) were determined in PJ with added GA. Although GA caused an important increase in content of cyanidin-3-glucoside (16-42%), which is major PJ anthocyanin, against HMF at all concentrations, CA (15%) and FA (28%) increased cyanidin-3-glucoside content against 10 mg of HMF L-1 . FA maintained its protection effect against the highest HMF concentration (20 mg of HMF L-1 ), but CA lost its protection effect. Generally, FA increased stabilities of hyperchromic effect (HE) (9.6-27.7%) and colour density (CD) (57.1-74.3%) at all HMF concentrations, although CA increased HE stability (19.8-37.7%) in the presence of 10 and 20 mg of HMF L-1 . Interactions of 'all individual anthocyanins-FA' and 'delphinidin-based anthocyanins-GA/CA' resulted in copigmentation. CONCLUSION FA addition was recommended to increase CD and HE for PJ containing HMF between 3.1-5.6 mg L-1 , whereas the addition of GA was recommended to increase anthocyanin stability for PJ containing 12.0 mg of HMF L-1 . © 2023 The Authors. Bergamot juice powder with high bioactive properties: Spray-drying for the preservation of antioxidant activity and ultrasound-assisted extraction for enhanced phenolic compound extraction. Abstract
The spray-drying process yielded functional bergamot juice powder with high antioxidant activity, phenolic content, and vitamin C content. Optimal drying conditions were determined as 10% maltodextrin concentration, 146.02°C inlet temperature, and 39.99% pump rate, preserving powder's bioactive properties. Under these drying conditions, bergamot juice powder exhibited an antioxidant activity of 62.2% DPPH scavenging activity, a total phenolic content of 3862.1 ppm, and a vitamin C content of 1385.9 ppm. The bergamot juice powder, with a water activity of 0.2, bulk density of 0.4 g/mL, tapped density of 0.5 g/mL, porosity of 89.6%, hygroscopicity of 8.6%, and cohesiveness of 37.2%, is highly suitable for further processing. High-pressure liquid chromatography analysis revealed the presence of major phenolic compounds in both fresh bergamot juice and spray-dried powder, although their concentrations were lower in the powder form. The major phenolics identified in the fruit juice were naringin (197.5 ppm), eriocitrin (105.9 ppm), neoeriocitrin (53.4 ppm), neohesperidin (68.8 ppm), and naringenin (119.8 ppm). However, in the powder form, the bitterness-associated compounds, naringin and neohesperidin, exhibited a significant reduction of 85.0% and 90.3%, respectively. Compared to dimethyl sulfoxide (48.4%), ethanol (37.9%), and distilled water (17.3%), ultrasound-assisted extraction with acetone solvent demonstrated the highest efficiency (61.7%) in obtaining phenolic compounds from bergamot juice powder. In conclusion, spray-drying is an effective method for obtaining functional bergamot juice powder, and ultrasound-assisted extraction can further enhance phenolic compound extraction efficiency. These findings have potential applications in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries, with opportunities for further research in functional foods or nutraceuticals. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Spray-drying yields functional bergamot juice powder with high bioactive properties. Optimal drying conditions can be applied in industrial settings. Ultrasound-assisted extraction enhances phenolic compound extraction efficiency. Potential applications in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are the most promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their low cost and environmental friendliness; therefore, enhancing the performance of SIBs' components is crucial. Although most of the studies have focused on single-phase cathode electrodes, these materials have difficulty in meeting the requirements in practice. At this point, composite materials show superior performance due to balancing different structures and are offered as an alternative to single-phase cathodes. In this study, we synthesized a Na0.44MnO2/Na0.7MnO2.05 composite material in a single step with cobalt substitution. Changes in the crystal structure and the physical and electrochemical properties of the composite and bare structures were studied. We report that even if the initial capacity is slightly lower, the rate and cyclic performance of the 1% Co-substituted composite sample (CO10) are superior to the undoped Na0.44MnO2 (NMO) and 5% Co-substituted (CO50) samples after 100 cycles. The results show that with the composite cathode phase transformations are suppressed, structural degradation is prevented, and better battery performance is achieved.

Abstract
Cancer has become an important cause of mortality and morbidity in the world. Over the past decades, biomedical research revealed insights into the molecular events and signaling pathways involved in carcinogenesis and cancer progression. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a diverse family of enzymes that can degrade various components of the extracellular matrix and are considered as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for many cancer types and cancer stages. Recently, studies on the role of natural-origin active substances in the prevention of cancer development gained importance. Among them, the α-lipoic acid, which is commonly found in plants, displayed potent anti-proliferative effects on cancer cell lines. However, the effect of the compound on the induction of apoptosis and mRNA expression of MMPs in human prostate cancer cells remains unclear. The present study aimed to evaluate the anti-proliferative and apoptotic activity of α-lipoic acid in human PC3 prostate carcinoma cells considering different concentrations and exposure durations. The findings showed that, α-lipoic acid significantly decreased PC3 cell viability with an IC50 value of 1.71 mM at 48 h (p < 0.05). Additionally, the compound significantly increased Annexin-V binding in cells compared to control and induced a significant alteration in mitochondrial membrane potential and caspase levels (p < 0.05). Furhermore, the RT-PCR analyses have revealed that α-lipoic acid reduced MMP-9 mRNA expression in PC3 cells compared to the control (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study highlights that α-lipoic acid induced apoptosis in human PC3 prostate cancer cells and inhibited the MMP-9 gene at the mRNA level, which is known to play a role in metastasis development.

Herein, we introduce a stable and green Au@g-C3N4 nanocomposite as a selective electrochemical sensor for vortioxetine (VOR) determination. The electrochemical behavior of VOR on the developed electrode was investigated through cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and chronoamperometry. The Au@g-C3N4 nanocomposite was thoroughly observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The Au@g-C3N4 nanocomposite had a higher conductivity and a narrower band gap than pure g-C3N4, causing higher electrochemical activity for VOR detection. Moreover, Au@g-C3N4 on the glassy carbon electrode (Au@g-C3N4/GCE) monitored a low level of VOR with high efficiency and low interference as an environmentally friendly processing approach. Interestingly, the as-fabricated sensor exhibited an ultrahigh selectivity for recognizing VOR with a detection limit (LOD) of 3.2 nM. Furthermore, the developed sensor was applied to determine VOR in pharmaceutical and biological samples, which indicated a high selectivity in the presence of interferences. This study suggests new insights into the phytosynthesis synthesis of nanomaterials with excellent biosensing applications.

Abstract
Natural killer (NK) cells are immune cells that have attracted significant attention due to their cytotoxic properties. They are believed to be highly effective in cancer therapy. In this study, anti-KIR2DL4 (Killer cell Immunoglobulin like Receptor, 2 Ig Domains and Long cytoplasmic tail 4) was used to stimulate the NK-92 activator receptor to increase their cytotoxicity on breast cancer cell lines. Unstimulated and stimulated NK-92 cells (sNK-92) were cocultured with breast cancer (MCF-7 and SK-BR-3) and normal breast (MCF-12A) cell lines at 1:1, 1:5, and 1:10 (Target:Effector) ratios. The most effective cell cytotoxicity ratio (1:10) was used in the immunostaining and western blot assays to evaluate apoptosis pathway proteins. The sNK-92 cells showed higher cytotoxic activity on breast cancer cells than NK-92 cells. sNK-92 cells had a selective significant cytotoxicity effect on MCF-7 and SK-BR-3 cells but not MCF-12A cells. While sNK-92 cells were effective at all cell concentrations, they were most effective at a 1:10 ratio. Immunostaining and western blots showed significantly higher BAX, caspase 3, and caspase 9 protein levels in all breast cancer cell groups cocultured with sNK-92 than with NK-92 cells. NK-92 cells stimulated with KIR2DL4 showed elevated cytotoxic activity. The cytotoxic activity of sNK-92 cells on breast cancer cells is via apoptosis pathways. However, their effect on normal breast cells is limited. While the obtained data contains only basic information, additional clinical studies are needed to provide a basis for a new treatment model.

Abstract
Viruses that naturally infect fungal species and capable of establishing mycorrhizae are largely unknown. In this study, we identified and characterized a new partitivirus inhabiting the ascomycete, mycorrhizal desert truffle species Terfezia claveryi, and named it "Terfezia claveryi partitivirus 1" (TcPV1). The entire genome of TcPV1, sequenced by both high throughput sequencing of the total dsRNA extracts and by Sanger sequencing of the RLM-RACE PCR products comprised two dsRNA segments of 2404 bp and 2374 bp, respectively. Both dsRNA genome segments harbored a single open reading frame (ORF), encoding a putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), and a capsid protein (CP), respectively. The BLASTp search of the RdRp and CP sequences revealed the highest sequence identities (41.92% and 24.13% identity, respectively) to those of Bipolaris maydis partitivirus 2 and Plasmopara viticola lesion associated partitivirus 5. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of the RdRp sequence showed that TcPV1 fall within a clade composed entirely of members of the genus Betapartitivirus, belonging to the family Partitiviridae. In light of this molecular evidence, TcPV1 is a new member of the genus Betapartitivirus. This is the first report of a new partitivirus hosted by the ascomycete, mycorrhizal fungus T. claveryi.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the quality characteristics and fatty acid composition of meat from male Akkaraman (AKK) and Bafra × Akkaraman B1 (BA B1) lambs slaughtered at different live weights. Thirty-six male lambs (18 AKK and 18 BA B1) were slaughtered at three different slaughter weights (35, 40, and 45 kg) after being fattened intensively. Meat physical quality characteristics and fatty acid profiles were used as response variables. Color parameters (L*, a*, and b*) and pH were not significantly influenced by genotype and slaughter weight (SW). Water-holding capacity (WHC) was significantly affected by SW (P < 0.05), cooking loss (CL) by genotype (P < 0.001). Increasing SW, intramuscular fat of the Longissimus thoracis muscle showed increased total unsaturated fatty acids (TUFA) (P < 0.01) and ratios of TUFA/saturated fatty acids (SFA) (P < 0.01), and decreased thrombogenic and atherogenic indices (P < 0.01). Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (P < 0.05) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (P < 0.01) varied on with the genotypes. In conclusion, genotype and SW did not greatly affect meat quality; however, MUFA and PUFA mutually changed according to the genotype, and fatty acid percentages improved according to the SW.

Abstract
Salmonellosis is a common foodborne zoonosis worldwide. The most common Salmonella serovar in humans is Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (50.3%) in the world. The main transmission route for S. Enteritidis is consumption of contaminated poultry products. Therefore, it is important to determine the diversity and spread of chicken-originated S. Enteritidis isolates in order to monitor and control salmonellosis. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multiple locus variable number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) are frequently used for typing of S. Enteritidis isolates. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles and MLVA and PFGE genotypes of chicken-originated S. Enteritidis isolates. A total of 200 S. Enteritidis isolated from chicken broiler, layer, and breeder flocks from different locations in Turkey were investigated by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method, PFGE, and MLVA. The AMR test indicated that 57% of the S. Enteritidis isolates were susceptible to all antimicrobials, while 39% were resistant to at least one antimicrobial. The highest resistance (25%) was against ampicillin. Multi-drug resistance rate was low (21%) and mostly from broiler flocks (93%). All isolates were genotyped into 32 different PFGE genotypes (PT) and 34 different MLVA genotypes (MT). The dominant genotypes were PT6 (12.5%) and MT22 (50%). In specific sample groups, there was a correlation between genotypes, breeding type, geographic location, and isolation years of the isolates. There was no significant difference in the discrimination power of PFGE and MLVA. However, MLVA was more suitable for large sample groups and routine genotyping because it was easier, quicker, and less labor-intensive to use.

Abstract
Introduction The aim of this study was to evaluate pharyngeal airway changes in adult skeletal Class III cases whose bimaxillary surgical treatments were planned with different amounts of maxillary and mandibular movement using lateral cephalometric radiographs and finite element analysis (FEA). Our null hypothesis was that bimaxillary orthognathic surgery in which maxillary forward movement (MF) is greater than mandibular backward movement (MB) will result in more expansion of the pharyngeal airway. Materials and Methods A total of 31 individuals (11 females, 20 males) with class III skeletal deformity were included in the study. Patients who underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery with greater maxillary advancement (MF > MB) were categorized in Group 1 (n = 15), and those with greater mandibular set-back (MB > MF) as Group 2 (n = 16). Changes in airway dimensions were evaluated from lateral cephalometric radiographs. In addition, FEA modeling was used to determine pharyngeal airway changes with 5 different MF/MB combinations performed in skeletal class III bimaxillary surgeries. Results Nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal airway dimensions increased in direct proportion to the amount of MF. Hypopharyngeal volume decreased compared to preoperative value in direct proportion to the decrease in MB. According to the FEA models, total pharyngeal airway volume decreased when MF was less than or equal to MB, was nearly unchanged when MF was 2 mm greater than MB, and increased when MF was 4 mm greater than MB. The results of FEA and lateral cephalometric analysis were compatible. Conclusion Our results supported the null hypothesis. We concluded that when possible, planning slightly more maxillary advancement than mandibular set-back will not have an adverse impact on the airway. Although the skeletal deformity only causes forward displacement of the mandible, dividing the skeletal correction between the maxilla and mandible may be considered to avoid the risk to patients' quality of life in terms of respiratory function.

Abstract
Although 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is an important anticancer agent for the treatment of colorectal cancer, drug resistance, and dose-related side effects limit the effectiveness of the treatment. Therefore, developing new pharmaceuticals with effective and low toxicity is critically necessary for cancer therapy. This study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic activity of the Clitocybe nebularis mushroom extract (CN) on HT-29 human colon cancer cells. A series of in vitro experiments were performed on the HT-29, Caco-2, and HEK-293 cells, which includes cytotoxicity, drug interaction, colony formation, cell cycle, and migration assays. In addition, qRT-PCR experiment was also performed to investigate the potential molecular mechanisms of action of CN on the proliferation of colon cancer cell line. Our results show that CN exhibited selective cytotoxic activity on HT-29 and Caco-2 colon cancer cells, whereas no cytotoxic effect was observed on normal HEK-293 cells. With the combination of CN and 5‑FU, their cytotoxic activity on HT-29 cells was significantly increased compared to their use alone. In addition, the combination of CN and 5-FU also showed synergistic anticancer activity through cell cycle arrest in the S phase. The results also show that p21, p27, and p53 expression levels increased as a result of CN treatment. Our in vitro findings show that CN has a synergistic effect with 5-FU by inhibiting cell proliferation of colon cancer cells and inducing cell cycle arrest in the S phase.

Abstract
The WUSCHEL-Related Homeobox (WOX) family is a type of homeobox transcription factor superfamily and its members perform many functions ranging from plant embryonic growth to organ formation in plants. Although the WOX proteins have been identified and characterized in many plant species, genome-wide identification and characterization of WOX proteins in the Phaseolus vulgaris genome has been performed for the first time in this study. Accordingly, 18 WOX proteins were identified using bioinformatics tools and biochemical/physicochemical properties of these proteins were investigated. Phvul-WOX genes were found to be categorized into three major phylogenetic groups according to the phylogenetic analysis and a total of five segmental duplication events were detected after duplication analysis. Moreover, the Phvul-WOX genes were found to be expressed in different plant tissues at different levels and some stress-related miRNAs have been found to target the Phvul-WOX genes based on miRNA analysis. Additionaly, MDA content, total protein level and catalase enzyme activity analyses were conducted in two P. vulgaris cultivars namely Yakutiye cv. and Zulbiye cv. subjected to 150 mM salt stress. Next, these cultivars were used for screening the expression levels of Phvul-WOX-1, Phvul-WOX-9, Phvul-WOX-11, Phvul-WOX-15 and Phvul-WOX-16 genes in response to salt stress. The insights gained from this study may be of assistance to the researchers who work in this area. Abstract
This study aims to determine the amounts of seven volatile N-nitrosamine (VNA) derivatives which are in the risk group, in processed sausages. It also aimed to investigate the effects of the amount of added ascorbic acid, on the VNA level during the sausage manufacturing processes. For this purpose, meat doughs were prepared with two different levels of ascorbic acid. These meat doughs were put into the production process and packaged in two different packages. Thus, VNA derivatives and their amounts were determined according to production stages (heat treatments), packaging method (vacuum, MAP), storage process (Day 1, 7, 15, 30, 60, 90). As a result, it was found that the sausage product carries risk of VNA formation from the beginning of its production until the last day of storage before consumption for up to 90 days.

Abstract
Previous research indicates that different exercise modes might create different effects on cognition and peripheral protein signals. This study aimed to compare the effects of long-term participation in an open and closed-skill exercise on cognitive functions and Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and Cathepsin B levels. 18 fencers, 18 swimmers, 18 sedentary controls between 18–25 years old participated in the study. Participants performed visuospatial working memory, verbal fluency and selective attention tasks. Blood samples were tested for Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and Cathepsin B using ELISA. The results showed that fencers performed superiorly on some part of visuospatial working memory, verbal fluency, and selective attention tasks than swimmers and sedentary controls. Athlete groups showed higher scores on some subtests of visuospatial working memory and selective attention tasks than sedentary controls. The basal serum Brain-derived neurotrophic factor level was not significant between the groups, but Cathepsin B was higher in fencers than swimmers and sedentary controls. The peripheric protein signal response to acute exercise was significantly higher in athletes, particularly in the open-skill group for Cathepsin B. Our research provided noteworthy results that more cognitively challenging exercise may provide more benefits for some aspects of cognition. Since our findings suggest that open-skill exercise improves specific types of executive-control functioning, this exercise mode might be included in training programs to support cognition and prevent cognitive impairment.

Abstract
The use of the Internet for medical information elicited a recent term called “cyberchondria”. This study aimed to scrutinize the mediating effects of health anxiety (HA), anxiety symptoms (AS), and Internet addiction (IA) in the pathway from distress tolerance (DT) to cyberchondria by using a bootstrapping method. In order to examine the role of age in the proposed model, multiple-group path analysis was used to evaluate differences between young and middle adulthood groups. The final sample consisted of both young adult (n = 209) and middle adult (n = 221) Internet users located in Ankara, Turkey. The results of path analyses for both age groups showed that DT is negatively associated with AS and HA; AS and HA are positively associated with IA; IA and HA are positively associated with cyberchondria. Mediation analysis for both age groups demonstrated that AS and HA significantly mediated the relationship between DT and IA; IA significantly mediated the relationships of AS and HA with cyberchondria; HA significantly mediated the relationship between DT and cyberchondria. The results of the multiple-group path analysis showed that the relationship between IA and cyberchondria is significantly stronger in middle adulthood than young adulthood. The results of the current study are consistent with the relevant literature and provide crucial contribution especially by focusing on the role of age.

Abstract
Lactuca L. species belong to the Asteraceae family and these plants are traditionally used for therapeutic purposes around the world. The dried milky latex of L. serriola is known as "lettuce oil" and is used as a sedative in Turkey. This study aimed to evaluate the sedative effects and analyze the chemical compositions of latexes obtained from some Lactuca species growing in Turkey. The sedative effects were evaluated through various behavioral tests on mice. For this purpose, latexes were obtained from L. glareosa Boiss., L. viminea (L.) J. Presl and C. P, L. mulgedioides (Vis and Panćić) Boiss. and Kotschy ex. Boiss., L. saligna L., and L. serriola L. The latex from L. saligna showed the highest sedative effects, whilst L. serriola and L. viminea latexes also displayed significant sedative effects compared to the control group at a dose of 100 mg/kg. However, the latexes from L. glareosa and L. mulqedioides did not exhibit any sedative effects on mice. Characteristic sesquiterpene lactones (lactucin, lactucopicrin, 11,13β-dihydrolactucin, and 11,13β-dihydrolactucopicrin) were determined qualitatively and quantitatively by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Lactucin was identified as the main component.

Abstract
Trastuzumab is a monoclonal antibody frequently used to prevent the progression of HER2+ breast cancers, which constitute approximately 20% of invasive breast cancers. microRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNA molecules that are known to be involved in gene regulation. With their emerging roles in cancer, they are recently promoted as potential candidates to mediate therapeutic actions by targeting genes associated with drug response. In this study we explored miRNA-mediated regulation of trastuzumab mechanisms by identifying the important miRNAs responsible for the drug response via homogenous network analysis. Our network model enabled us to simplify the complexity of miRNA interactions by connecting them through their common pathways. We outlined the functionally relevant miRNAs by constructing pathway-based miRNA-miRNA networks in SKBR3 and BT474 cells, respectively. Identification of the most targeted genes revealed that trastuzumab responsive miRNAs favourably regulate the repression of targets with longer 3’UTR than average considered to be key elements, while the miRNA-miRNA networks highlighted central miRNAs such as hsa-miR-3976 and hsa-miR-3671 that showed strong interactions with the remaining members of the network. Furthermore, the clusters of the miRNA-miRNA networks showed that trastuzumab response was mostly established through cancer related and metabolic pathways. hsa-miR-216b was found to be the part of the most powerful interactions of metabolic pathways, which was defined in the largest clusters in both cell lines. The network based representation of miRNA-miRNA interactions through their shared pathways provided a better understanding of miRNA-mediated drug response and could be suggested for further characterization of miRNA functions.
