An Isolable One-Coordinate Lead(I) Radical with Strong g-Factor Anisotropy

Lead-based radicals in the oxidation state of +1 are elusive species and are highly challenging to isolate in the condensed phase. In this study, we present the synthesis and characterization of the first isolable free plumbylyne radical 2 bearing a one-coordinate Pb(I) atom. It reacts with an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) to afford a two-coordinate NHC-ligated Pb(I) radical 3. 2 and 3 represent the first isolable Pb(I)-based radicals. Theoretical calculations and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis revealed that the unpaired electron mainly resides at the Pb 6p orbital in both radicals. Owing to the unique one-coordinate nature of the Pb atom in 2, it possesses two-fold orbital pseudo-degeneracy and substantial unquenched orbital angular momentum, and exhibits hitherto strongest g-factor anisotropy (gx,y,z=1.496, 1.166, 0.683) amongst main group radicals. Preliminary investigations into the reactivity of 2 unveiled its Pb-centered radical nature, and plumbylenes were isolated as products.

Magneto-Structural Correlation of Five-Coordinate Trigonal Bipyramidal High Spin Cobalt(II) Complexes

Here, we combined magnetometry, multi-frequency electronic paramagnetic resonance, and wave function based ab initio calculations to investigate magnetic properties of two high spin Co(II) complexes Co(BDPRP) (BDPRP=2,6-bis((2-(S)-di(4-R)phenylhydroxylmethyl-1-pyrrolidi-nyl)methyl)pyridine, R=H for 8; R=tBu for 9). Complexes 8 and 9 featuring effective D3h symmetry were found to possess D=24.0 and 32.0 cm-1, respectively, in their S=3/2 ground states of1 e ' ' d x z / y z 4 1 e ' d x y / x 2 - y 2 2 1 a 1 ' d z 2 1 ${{\left(1{{\rm e}}^{{\rm { {^\prime}}}{\rm { {^\prime}}}}\right({d}_{xz/yz}\left)\right)}^{4}{\left(1{{\rm e}}^{{\rm { {^\prime}}}}\right({d}_{{xy/{x}^{2}-y}^{2}}\left)\right)}^{2}{\left(1{{\rm a}}_{1}^{{\rm { {^\prime}}}}\right({d}_{{z}^{2}}\left)\right)}^{1}}$ . Ligand field analyses revealed that the low-lying d-d excited states make either positive or vanishing contributions to D. Hence, total positive D values were measured for 8 and 9, as well as related D3h high spin Co(II) complexes. In contrast, negative D values are usually observed for C3v congeners. In-depth analyses suggested that lowering symmetry from D3h to C3v induces orbital mixing between1 e d x z / y z ${1{\rm e}\left({d}_{xz/yz}\right)}$ and2 e d x y / x 2 - y 2 ${2{\rm e}\left({d}_{{xy/{x}^{2}-y}^{2}}\right)}$ and admixes excited state4 A 2 1 e → 2 e ${{}^{4}{{\rm A}}_{2}\left(1e\to 2e\right)}$ into the ground state. Both factors turn the total D value progressively negative with the increasing distance (δ) of the Co(II) center out of the equatorial plane. Therefore, δ determines the sign and magnitude of final D values of five-coordinate trigonal bipyramidal S=3/2 Co(II) complexes as measured for a series of such species with varying δ.

The status and challenging perspectives of 3D-printed micro-batteries

In the era of the Internet of Things and wearable electronics, 3D-printed micro-batteries with miniaturization, aesthetic diversity and high aspect ratio, have emerged as a recent innovation that solves the problems of limited design diversity, poor flexibility and low mass loading of materials associated with traditional power sources restricted by the slurry-casting method. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the rational design of 3D-printed materials, inks, methods, configurations and systems is critical to optimize the electrochemical performance of customizable 3D-printed micro-batteries. In this review, we offer a key overview and systematic discussion on 3D-printed micro-batteries, emphasizing the close relationship between printable materials and printing technology, as well as the reasonable design of inks. Initially, we compare the distinct characteristics of various printing technologies, and subsequently emphatically expound the printable components of micro-batteries and general approaches to prepare printable inks. After that, we focus on the outstanding role played by 3D printing design in the device architecture, battery configuration, performance improvement, and system integration. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives concerning high-performance 3D-printed micro-batteries are adequately highlighted and discussed. This comprehensive discussion aims at providing a blueprint for the design and construction of next-generation 3D-printed micro-batteries.

Water-Stable High-Entropy Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising platforms for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their fascinating physiochemical properties. Rationally engineering the compositions and structures of MOFs can provide abundant opportunities for their optimization. In recent years, high-entropy materials (HEMs) have demonstrated great potential in the energy and environment fields. However, there is still no report on the development of high-entropy MOFs (HE-MOFs) for photocatalytic HER in aqueous solution. Herein, the authors report the synthesis of a novel p-type HE-MOFs single crystal (HE-MOF-SC) and the corresponding HE-MOFs nanosheets (HE-MOF-NS) capable of realizing visible-light-driven photocatalytic HER. Both HE-MOF-SC and HE-MOF-NS exhibit higher photocatalytic HER activity than all the single-metal MOFs, which are supposed to be ascribed to the interplay between the different metal nodes in the HE-MOFs that enables more efficient charge transfer. Moreover, impressively, the HE-MOF-NS demonstrates much higher photocatalytic activity than the HE-MOF-SC due to its thin thickness and enhanced surface area. At optimum conditions, the rate of H2 evolution on the HE-MOF-NS is ≈13.24 mmol h-1 g-1, which is among the highest values reported for water-stable MOF photocatalysts. This work highlights the importance of developing advanced high-entropy materials toward enhanced photocatalysis.

A Choline-Based Antifreezing Complexing Agent with Selective Compatibility for Zn-Br2 Flow Batteries

The high freezing point of polybromides, charging products, is a significant obstacle to the rapid development of zinc-bromine flow batteries (Zn-Br2 FBs). Here, a choline-based complexing agent (CCA) is constructed to liquefy the polybromides at low temperatures. Depending on quaternary ammonium group, choline can effectively complex with polybromide anions and form dense oil-phase that has excellent antifreezing property. Benefiting from indispensable strong ion-ion interaction, the highly selectively compatible CCA, consisting of choline and N-methyl-N-ethyl-morpholinium salts (CCA-M), can be achieved to further enhance bromine fixing ability. Interestingly, the formed polybromides with CCA-M are able to keep liquid even at -40 °C. The CCA-M endows Zn-Br2 FBs at 40 mA cm-2 with unprecedented long cycle life (over 150 cycles) and high Coulombic efficiency (CE, average ≈98.8%) at -20 °C, but also at room temperature (over 1200 cycles, average CE: ≈94.7%). The CCA shows a promising prospect of application and should be extended to other antifreezing bromine-based energy storage systems.

Probing the functional hotspots inside protein hydrophobic pockets by in situ photochemical trifluoromethylation and mass spectrometry

Due to the complex high-order structures and interactions of proteins within an aqueous solution, a majority of chemical functionalizations happen on the hydrophilic sites of protein external surfaces which are naturally exposed to the solution. However, the hydrophobic pockets inside proteins are crucial for ligand binding and function as catalytic centers and transporting tunnels. Herein, we describe a reagent pre-organization and in situ photochemical trifluoromethylation strategy to profile the functional sites inside the hydrophobic pockets of native proteins. Unbiased mass spectrometry profiling was applied for the characterization of trifluoromethylated sites with high sensitivity. Native proteins including myoglobin, trypsin, haloalkane dehalogenase, and human serum albumin have been engaged in this mild photochemical process and substantial hydrophobic site-specific and structure-selective trifluoromethylation substitutes are obtained without significant interference to their bioactivity and structures. Sodium triflinate is the only reagent required to functionalize the unprotected proteins with wide pH-range tolerance and high biocompatibility. This "in-pocket" activation model provides a general strategy to modify the potential binding pockets and gain essential structural insights into the functional hotspots inside protein hydrophobic pockets.

Breaking the trade-off between capacity and stability in vanadium-based zinc-ion batteries

Water in electrolytes is a double-edged sword in zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). While it allows for proton insertion in the cathode, resulting in a significant increase in capacity compared to that of organic ZIBs, it also causes damage to electrodes, leading to performance degradation. To overcome the capacity-stability trade-off, organic solvents containing a small amount of water are proposed to mitigate the harmful effects of water while ensuring sufficient proton insertion. Remarkably, in a Zn(OTf)2 electrolyte using 8% H2O in acetonitrile as the solvent, Zn‖(NH4)0.5V2O5·0.5H2O exhibited a capacity as high as 490 mA h g-1 at a low current (0.3 A g-1), with a capacity retention of 80% even after 9000 cycles at high current (6 A g-1), simultaneously achieving the high capacity as in pure aqueous electrolytes and excellent stability as in organic electrolytes. We also found that the water content strongly impacts the kinetics and reversibility of ion insertion/extraction and zinc stripping/plating. Furthermore, compared to electrolytes with pure acetonitrile or H2O solvents, electrolytes with only 8% H2O in acetonitrile provide higher capacities at temperatures ranging from 0 to -50 °C. These discoveries enhance our understanding of the mechanisms involved in ZIBs and present a promising path toward enhancing electrolyte solutions for the creation of high-performance ZIBs.

Two-Color Amplified Spontaneous Emission from Auger-Suppressed Quantum Dots in Liquids

Colloidal quantum-dot (QD) lasing is normally achieved in close-packed solid-state films, as a high QD volume fraction is required for stimulated emission to outcompete fast Auger decay of optical-gain-active multiexciton states. Here a new type of liquid optical-gain medium is demonstrated, in which compact compositionally-graded QDs (ccg-QDs) that feature strong suppression of Auger decay are liquefied using a small amount of solvent. Transient absorption measurements of ccg-QD liquid suspensions reveal broad-band optical gain spanning a wide spectral range from 560 (green) to 675 nm (red). The gain magnitude is sufficient to realize a two-color amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) at 637 and 594 nm due to the band-edge (1S) and the excited-state (1P) transition, respectively. Importantly, the ASE regime is achieved using quasicontinuous excitation with nanosecond pulses. Furthermore, the ASE is highly stable under prolonged excitation, which stands in contrast to traditional dyes that exhibit strong degradation under identical excitation conditions. These observations point toward a considerable potential of high-density ccg-QD suspensions as liquid, dye-like optical gain media that feature readily achievable spectral tunability and stable operation under intense photoexcitation.

Copper-catalyzed trichloromethylative carbonylation of ethylene

Difunctionalization of alkenes is an efficient strategy for the synthesis of complex compounds from readily available starting materials. Herein, we developed a copper-catalyzed visible-light-mediated trichloromethylative carbonylation of ethylene by employing commercially available CCl4 and CO as trichloromethyl and carbonyl sources, respectively. With this protocol, various nucleophiles including amines, phenols, and alcohols can be rapidly transformed into β-trichloromethyl carboxylic acid derivatives with good functional-group tolerance. Bis-vinylated γ-trichloromethyl amides can also be obtained by adjusting the pressure of carbon monoxide and ethylene. In addition, this photocatalytic system can be successfully applied in the late-stage functionalization of bioactive molecules and pharmaceutical derivatives as well.

Triazine-Based Graphitic Carbon Nitride Thin Film as a Homogeneous Interphase for Lithium Storage

Triazine-based graphitic carbon nitride is a semiconductor material constituted of cross-linked triazine units, which differs from widely reported heptazine-based carbon nitrides. Its triazine-based structure gives rise to significantly different physical chemical properties from the latter. However, it is still a great challenge to experimentally synthesize this material. Here, we propose a synthesis strategy via vapor-metal interfacial condensation on a planar copper substrate to realize homogeneous growth of triazine-based graphitic carbon nitride films over large surfaces. The triazine-based motifs are clearly shown in transmission electron microscopy with high in-plane crystallinity. An AB-stacking arrangement of the layers is orientationlly parallel to the substrate surface. Eventually, the as-prepared films show dense electrochemical lithium deposition attributed to homogeneous charge transport within this thin film interphase, making it a promising solution for energy storage.

Time-Resolved Product Observation for CO2 Electroreduction Using Synchronised Electrochemistry-Mass Spectrometry with Soft Ionisation (sEC-MS-SI)

The mechanistic understanding of electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2 RR) requires a rapid and accurate characterisation of product distribution to unravel the activity and selectivity, which is yet hampered by the lack of advanced correlative approaches. Here, we present the time-resolved identification of CO2 RR products by using the synchronised electrochemistry-mass spectrometry (sEC-MS). Transients in product formation can be readily captured in relation to electrochemical conditions. Moreover, a soft ionisation (SI) strategy is developed in MS for the direct observation of CO, immune to the interference of CO2 fragments. With the sEC-MS-SI, the kinetic information, such as Tafel slopes and onset potentials, for a myriad of CO2 RR products are revealed and we show the hysteresis seen for the evolution of some species may originate from the potential-driven changes in surface coverage of intermediates. This work provides a real-time picture of the dynamic formation of CO2 RR products.

Infrared spectroscopic study of solvation and size effects on reactions between water molecules and neutral rare-earth metals

Elucidating the solvation and size effects on the reactions between water and neutral metals is crucial for understanding the microscopic mechanism of the catalytic processes but has been proven to be a challenging experimental target due to the difficulty in size selection. Here, MO4H6 and M2O6H7 (M = Sc, Y, La) complexes were synthesized using a laser-vaporization cluster source and characterized by size-specific infrared-vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations. The MO4H6 and M2O6H7 complexes were found to have H˙M(OH)3(H2O) and M2(μ2-OH)2(η1-OH)3(η1-OH2) structures, respectively. A combination of experiments and theory revealed that the formation of H˙M(OH)3(H2O) and M2(μ2-OH)2(η1-OH)3(η1-OH2) is both thermodynamically exothermic and kinetically facile in the gas phase. The results indicated that upon the addition of water to H˙M(OH)3, the feature of the hydrogen radical is retained. In the processes from mononuclear H˙M(OH)3 to binuclear M2(μ2-OH)2(η1-OH)3(η1-OH2), the active hydrogen atom undergoes the evolution from hydrogen radical → bridging hydrogen → metal hydride → hydrogen bond, which is indicative of a reduced reactivity. The present system serves as a model for clarifying the solvation and size effects on the reactions between water and neutral rare-earth metals and offers a general paradigm for systematic studies on a broad class of the reactions between small molecules and metals at the nanoscale.

The Introduction of Detergents in Thermal Proteome Profiling Requires Lowering the Applied Temperatures for Efficient Target Protein Identification

Although the use of detergents in thermal proteome profiling (TPP) has become a common practice to identify membrane protein targets in complex biological samples, surprisingly, there is no proteome-wide investigation into the impacts of detergent introduction on the target identification performance of TPP. In this study, we assessed the target identification performance of TPP in the presence of a commonly used non-ionic detergent or a zwitterionic detergent using a pan-kinase inhibitor staurosporine, our results showed that the addition of either of these detergents significantly impaired the identification performance of TPP at the optimal temperature for soluble target protein identification. Further investigation showed that detergents destabilized the proteome and increased protein precipitation. By lowering the applied temperature point, the target identification performance of TPP with detergents is significantly improved and is comparable to that in the absence of detergents. Our findings provide valuable insight into how to select the appropriate temperature range when detergents are used in TPP. In addition, our results also suggest that the combination of detergent and heat may serve as a novel precipitation-inducing force that can be applied for target protein identification.

Developing a CRISPR/Cas9 System for Genome Editing in the Basidiomycetous Yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides

The basidiomycetous yeast Rhodosporidium toruloides (R. toruloides) has been explored as a promising host for the production of lipids and carotenoids. However, the rational manipulation of this yeast remains difficult due to lack of efficient genetic tools. Here, the development of a clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated nuclease (Cas9) system for genome editing in R. toruloides is described. First, R. toruloides strains are generated with sufficient production of the Cas9 protein of Staphylococcus aureus origin by integrating a cassette containing a codon-optimized Cas9 gene into the genome. In parallel, two U6 genes are identified, predicting two U6 promoters and confirming better transcription of single-guide RNA (sgRNA) with the U6b promoter. Next, sgRNA cassettes are designed targeting CRTI, CAR2, and CLYBL gene, respectively, transforming into those Cas9-expressed strains, and finding over 60% transformants with successful insertion and deletion (indel) mutations. Furthermore, when the sgRNA cassette includes donor DNA flanked by two homologous arms of the gene CRTI, gene knockout occurs via homologous recombination. Thus, the CRISPR/Cas9 system is now established as a powerful genome-editing tool in R. toruloides, which should facilitate functional genomic study and advanced cell factory development.
