Serum cytokines and creatinine/cystatin C ratio as prognostic biomarkers in advanced cancer patients treated with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapy

OBJECTIVE

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), specifically targeting the programmed cell death protein-1 or its ligand (PD-1/PD-L1), have been extensively used in the treatment of a spectrum of malignancies, although the predictive biomarkers remain to be elucidated. This study aims to investigate the association between baseline circulating levels of cytokines and the creatinine/cystatin C ratio (CCR) with the treatment outcomes of ICIs in patients with advanced cancer.

METHODS

The pre-treatment circulating levels of 10 cytokines (PD-L1, CTLA4, CXCL10, LAG3, HGF, CCL2, MIG, GRANB, IL-18, and IL-6) were measured via automated capillary-based immunoassay platform in the serum of 65 advanced cancer patients treated with anti-PD-1/PD-L1-based systemic therapy and 10 healthy volunteers. The levels of cytokines and CCR were quantified and categorized into high and low groups based on the median value. The associations of serum cytokines and CCR with response to treatment, survival, and immune-related adverse events were assessed.

RESULTS

Elevated circulating levels of 6 cytokines (PD-L1, CXCL10, HGF, CCL2, MIG, and IL-6) were observed in cancer patients compared with that in healthy volunteers. The correlation coefficients between cytokines, CCR and nutritional risk index were also calculated. In the cancer cohort (N = 65), low circulating HGF (P = 0.023, P = 0.029), low IL-6 (P = 0.002, P < 0.001), and high CCR (P = 0.031, P = 0.008) were associated with significantly improved progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Multi-variable COX analyses adjusted for clinicopathological factors revealed that low HGF, low IL-6, and high CCR were independent favorable prognostic factors for PFS (P = 0.028, P = 0.010, and P = 0.015, respectively) and OS (P = 0.043, P = 0.003, and P = 0.026, respectively). Grade 2 irAEs occurred more frequently in patients with low levels of circulating CCL2 and LAG3.

CONCLUSIONS

Pre-treatment circulating levels of serum IL-6, HGF, and CCR may serve as independent predictive and prognostic biomarkers in advanced cancer patients treated with ICIs-based systemic therapy. These findings might help to identify potential patients who would benefit from these therapies.

Study on the Effect of Two-Stage Injection Strategy for Coal-to-Liquid/Gasoline Reactivity-Controlled Compression Ignition Combustion Mode

An experimental study was carried out on a modified single-cylinder dual-fuel engine in reactivity-controlled compression ignition (RCCI) mode using pilot fuels with different physicochemical properties, and the effects of the pilot fuels and the two-stage injection strategy on the combustion and emission characteristics of the RCCI mode were explored. The results show that when coal-to-liquid (CTL) is used with a high cetane number as the pilot fuel, the reactivity stratification of the fuel-air mixture is more pronounced. With the advancement of pilot injection timing (SOI1), the heat release rate (HRR) of the CTL/gasoline mode gradually changes from a bimodal pattern to a unimodal pattern. Among them, the bimodal HRR includes CTL premixed combustion and gasoline flame propagation, as well as CTL diffused combustion and gasoline multipoint spontaneous combustion, while the unimodal HRR represents CTL premixed combustion and gasoline multipoint spontaneous combustion. However, the HRR of the fossil diesel/gasoline RCCI combustion mode always exhibits a unimodal form. With the advancement of the main injection timing (SOI2), the gravity center of heat release (CA50) is more advanced when using CTL as the pilot fuel due to the short ignition delay. Overall, compared to fossil diesel, using CTL as the pilot fuel is conducive to controlling the pressure rise rate, which expands the operating range of the RCCI combustion mode. Besides, for both pilot fuels of CTL and fossil diesel, the advancement of SOI1 lowers particle emissions, and the advancement of SOI2 reduces NOx emissions, while the two-stage injection achieves higher indicated thermal efficiency.

The effects of visual art therapy on adults with depressive symptoms: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Depression constitutes a pervasive global mental health concern and stands as a principal determinant of elevated suicide rates worldwide. Recent empirical investigations have showcased the significant potential of visual art therapy (VAT) in ameliorating symptoms among individuals with depression. Nevertheless, specific studies have yielded findings marked by inconclusiveness, underscoring the imperative need for further research to comprehensively establish its efficacy. This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of extant research, to ascertain the efficacy and effect size of VAT as an intervention for adults with depressive symptoms. A comprehensive search was conducted across 10 databases. The search encompassed articles published from the inception of these databases up until October 18, 2023. Two researchers screened the literature in accordance with inclusion and exclusion criteria and performed a thorough quality assessment. The original data and the data obtained from the literature were extracted for further analysis. The statistical analysis of the data was performed using Stata 17.0 software. fifteen studies were included, encompassing a total of 932 participants. The outcomes of meta-analysis unveiled a statistically significant effect of VAT in diminishing depressive symptoms among adults (SMD = -0.73; 95% CI, -1.07 to -0.39; p < 0.001; 15 randomised controlled trials (RCTs); low-quality evidence). The subgroup analysis indicated that VAT exhibited heightened effectiveness among adults below 65 years of age, with interventions lasting ≤12 weeks demonstrating superior efficacy. Additionally, sensitivity analysis underscored the robustness and reliability of the findings. VAT appears to alleviate depressive symptoms among adults. Existing research indicates that the effectiveness of VAT is influenced by factors, such as intervention population characteristics and intervention duration. However, to comprehensively probe the efficacy of VAT, future studies should strive for larger sample sizes, multicentre collaborations, and long-term follow-ups.

A Novel Cu(II) Loaded Polypeptide SO2 Prodrug Nanoformulation Combining Chemodynamic and Gas Anticancer Therapies

Sulfur dioxide (SO2)-based gas therapy and chemodynamic therapyare both reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated anticancer strategies, but there are few reports of their combined application. To this end, a novel graft-type copolymeric SO2 prodrug, PLG-g-mPEG-DNs, is designed and synthesized in this work. The amphiphilic polypeptides can self-assemble into nanoparticles (NPs) and encapsulated Cu(II) ions by metal-carboxyl coordination. In vitro release results showed that the obtained NPs-Cu can respond to the acidic pH and high glutathione levels typical of a tumor microenvironment to release Cu(II) and SO2 simultaneously. Both a Cu(II)-triggered Fenton-like reaction and the SO2 gas would promote ROS production and upregulate the oxidative stress in tumor cells, leading to an enhanced killing effect towards 4T1 cancer cells compared to either Cu(II) or the NPs alone. Furthermore, the in vitro hemolysis of NPs-Cu is less than 1.0% at a high concentration of 8 mg/mL, indicating good blood compatibility and the potential for in vivo tumor inhibition application.

Feasibility of tracheal reconstruction using silicone-stented aortic allografts

OBJECTIVES

Tracheal reconstruction post-extensive resection remains an unresolved challenge in thoracic surgery. This study evaluates the use of aortic allografts (AAs) for tracheal replacement and reconstruction in a rat model, aiming to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of tracheal regeneration.

METHODS

AAs from female rats were employed for tracheal reconstruction in 36 male rats, with the replacement exceeding half of the tracheal length. To avert collapse, silicone stents were inserted into the AA lumens. No immunosuppressive therapy was administered. The rats were euthanized biweekly, and the AAs were examined for neovascularization, cartilage formation, respiratory epithelial ingrowth, submucosal gland regeneration and the presence of the Sex-determining region of Y-chromosome (SRY) gene.

RESULTS

All procedures were successfully completed without severe complications. The AA segments were effectively integrated into the tracheal framework, with seamless distinction at suture lines. Histological analysis indicated an initial inflammatory response, followed by the development of squamous and mucociliary epithelia, new cartilage ring formation and gland regeneration. In situ hybridization identified the presence of the SRY gene in newly formed cartilage rings, confirming that regeneration was driven by recipient cells.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrates the feasibility of AAs transforming into functional tracheal conduits, replicating the main structural and functional characteristics of the native trachea. The findings indicate that this approach offers a novel pathway for tissue regeneration and holds potential for treating extensive tracheal injuries.

DFT Study of N-modified Co3Mo3C Electrocatalyst with Separated Active Sites for Enhanced Ammonia Oxidation

Since the facile oxidation of ammonia is one key for its utilization as a zero-carbon fuel in a direct ammonia fuel cell, developing the ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) catalysts with cost-effective and higher activity is urgently required. However, the catalytic activity of AOR is limited by the scaling relationship of the intermediate adsorption. Based on the density functional theory, the N-modified Co3Mo3C with separated active sites of NH3 dehydrogenation and N-N coupling has been designed and investigated, which is a promising strategy to circumvent the scaling relationship, achieving improved AOR catalytic performance with a lower theoretical overpotential of 0.59 V under fast reaction kinetics condition. The calculation results show that the hollow site (Co-Mo-Mo and Co-Co-Mo) and Co site in N-modified Co3Mo3C play essential roles in NH3 dehydrogenation and N-N coupling, respectively. This work not only benefits for understanding the mechanism of AOR, but also provides a fundamental guidance for rational design of AOR catalysts.

In-depth theoretical analysis of the influence of an external electric field on charge transport parameters

It is important to develop materials with environmental stability and long device shelf life for use in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). The microscopic, molecular-level nature of the organic layer in OFETs is not yet well understood. The stability of geometric and electronic structures and the regulation of the external electric field (EEF) on the charge transport properties of four typical homogeneous organic semiconductors (OSCs) were investigated by density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that under the EEF, the structural changes in single-bond linked oligomers were more sensitive and complex than those of condensed molecules, and there were non-monotonic changes in their reorganization energy (λ) during charge transport under an EEF consisting of decreases and then increases (Series D). The change in λ under an EEF can be preliminarily and qualitatively determined by the change in the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) - the number of C-atoms with nonbonding characteristics. For single-bonded molecules, the transfer integral is basically unchanged under a low EEF, but it will greatly change at a high EEF. Because the structure and properties of the molecule will greatly change under different EEFs, the effect of an EEF should be fully considered when determining the intrinsic mobility of OSCs, which could cause a deviation 0.3-20 times in mobility. According to detailed calculations, one heterogeneous oligomer, TH-BTz, was designed. Its λ can be greatly reduced under an EEF, and the change in the energy level of FMOs can be adjusted to different degrees. This study provides a reasonable idea for verification of the experimental mobility value and also provides guidance for the directional design of stable high-mobility OSCs.

Seconds Timescale Synthesis of Highly Stretchable Antibacterial Hydrogel for Skin Wound Closure and Epidermal Strain Sensor

Effective wound healing is critical for patient care, and the development of novel wound dressing materials that promote healing, prevent infection, and are user-friendly is of great importance, particularly in the context of point-of-care testing (POCT). This study reports the synthesis of a hydrogel material that can be produced in less than 10 s and possesses antibacterial activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms, as well as the ability to inhibit the growth of eukaryotic cells, such as yeast. The hydrogel is formed wholly based on covalent-like hydrogen bonding interactions and exhibits excellent mechanical properties, with the ability to stretch up to more than 600% of its initial length. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrates ultra-fast self-healing properties, with fractures capable of being repaired within 10 s. This hydrogel can promote skin wound healing, with the added advantage of functioning as a strain sensor that generates an electrical signal in response to physical deformation. The strain sensor composed of a rubber shell realizes fast and responsive strain sensing. The findings suggest that this hydrogel has promising applications in the field of POCT for wound care, providing a new avenue for improved patient outcomes.

The effect of modifier and a water-soluble fertilizer on two forages grown in saline-alkaline soil

Saline-alkali soil significantly impairs crop growth. This research employs the impacts of the modifier and water-soluble fertilizer, as well as their interaction, on the root systems of alfalfa and leymus chinensis in saline-alkali soil. The results exhibit that the hydrochar source modifier effectively enhances the root growth of both forage species. There are certain improvements in the root growth indicators of both crops at a dosage of 20 g/kg. Root enzyme activity and rhizosphere soil enzyme activity are enhanced in alfalfa, showing significant improvements in the first planting compared to the second planting. The application of water-soluble fertilizers also promotes root growth and root dehydrogenase activity. The root dehydrogenase activity of alfalfa and leymus chinensis are enhanced 62.18% and 10.15% in first planting than that of blank, respectively. Additionally, the two-factor variance analysis revealed a correlation between rhizosphere soil enzyme activity and changes in root traits. Higher rhizosphere soil enzyme activity is observed in conjunction with better root growth. The combined application of a modifier and water-soluble fertilizer has demonstrated a significant interaction effect on various aspects of the first planting of alfalfa and leymus chinensis. Moreover, the combined application of the modifier and water-soluble fertilizer has yielded superior results when compared to the individual application of either the modifier or the water-soluble fertilizer alone. This combined approach has proven effective in improving saline-alkali soil conditions and promoting crop growth in such challenging environments.

Appraising associations between signature lipidomic biomarkers and digestive system cancer risk: novel evidences from a prospective cohort study of UK Biobank and Mendelian randomization analyses

BACKGROUND

The roles of serum lipids on digestive system cancer (DSC) risk were still inconclusive. In this study, we systematically assessed indicative effects of signature lipidomic biomarkers (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG)) on DSC (oesophagus, stomach, colorectal, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas cancers) risk.

METHODS

HDL-C, LDL-C, and TG concentration measurements were respectively analyzed with enzyme immunoinhibition, enzymatic selective protection, and GPO-POD methods in AU5800 supplied from Beckman Coulter. The diagnoses of DSCs were coded using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes updated until October 2022 in the UK Biobank (UKB). In this study, we assessed phenotypic association patterns between signature lipidomic biomarkers and DSC risk using restricted cubic splines (RCSs) in multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models. Moreover, linear and nonlinear causal association patterns of signature lipidomic biomarkers with DSC risk were determined by linear and nonlinear Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses.

RESULTS

A median follow-up time of 11.8 years was recorded for 319,568 participants including 6916 DSC cases. A suggestive independent nonlinear phenotypic association was observed between LDL-C concentration and stomach cancer risk (Pnonlinearity < 0.05, Poverall < 0.05). Meanwhile, a remarkable independent linear negative phenotypic association was demonstrated between HDL-C concentration and stomach cancer risk (Pnonlinearity > 0.05, Poverall < 0.008 (0.05/6 outcomes, Bonferroni-adjusted P)), and suggestive independent linear positive associations were observed between HDL-C concentration and colorectal cancer risk, and between TG concentration and gallbladder cancer risk (Pnonlinearity > 0.05, Poverall < 0.05). Furthermore, based on nonlinear and linear MR-based evidences, we observed an suggestive independent negative causal association (hazard ratio (HR) per 1 mmol/L increase: 0.340 (0.137-0.843), P = 0.020) between LDL-C and stomach cancer risk without a nonlinear pattern (Quadratic P = 0.901, Cochran Q P = 0.434). Meanwhile, subgroup and stratified MR analyses both supported the category of LDL-C ≥ 4.1 mmol/L was suggestively protective against stomach cancer risk, especially among female participants (HR: 0.789 (0.637-0.977), P = 0.030) and participants aged 60 years or older (HR: 0.786 (0.638-0.969), P = 0.024), and the category of TG ≥ 2.2 mmol/L concluded to be a suggestive risk factor for gallbladder cancer risk in male participants (HR: 1.447 (1.020-2.052), P = 0.038) and participants aged 60 years or older (HR: 1.264 (1.003-1.593), P = 0.047).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings confirmed indicative roles of signature lipidomic biomarkers on DSC risk, notably detecting suggestive evidences for a protective effect of high LDL-C concentration on stomach cancer risk, and a detrimental effect of high TG concentration on gallbladder cancer risk among given participants.

Recent Developments of Fluorescence Sensors Constructed from Pillar[n]arene-Based Supramolecular Architectures Containing Metal Coordination Sites

The field of fluorescence sensing, leveraging various supramolecular self-assembled architectures constructed from macrocyclic pillar[n]arenes, has seen significant advancement in recent decades. This review comprehensively discusses, for the first time, the recent innovations in the synthesis and self-assembly of pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular architectures (PSAs) containing metal coordination sites, along with their practical applications and prospects in fluorescence sensing. Integrating hydrophobic and electron-rich cavities of pillar[n]arenes into these supramolecular structures endows the entire system with self-assembly behavior and stimulus responsiveness. Employing the host-guest interaction strategy and complementary coordination forces, PSAs exhibiting both intelligent and controllable properties are successfully constructed. This provides a broad horizon for advancing fluorescence sensors capable of detecting environmental pollutants. This review aims to establish a solid foundation for the future development of fluorescence sensing applications utilizing PSAs. Additionally, current challenges and future perspectives in this field are discussed.

Nitrogen-doped carbon material NCM-T heterogeneously catalyzed liquid-phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline

As an important chemical intermediate, aniline is primarily produced industrially through catalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene. Herein, a series of nitrogen-doped carbon materials (referred to as NCM-T, with T denoting the roasting temperature (°C)) were prepared through high-temperature roasting of sucrose and melamine for the heterogeneous catalytic liquid-phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline. A preliminary study of the involved reaction mechanism was performed by combining the results of material characterisation and catalyst evaluation. Experimental results showed that the graphitic N content and the defective sites simultaneously affected the performance of NCM-T in catalysing the hydrazine hydrate reduction in the nitrobenzene hydrogenation reaction. The catalyst NCM-800 was reacted in an ethanol solution with hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent at 80 °C for 5 h. Notably, the nitrobenzene conversion rate was up to 94%, and the aniline selectivity was 100%. The turnover frequency (TOF) could reach up to 7.9 mol g-1 h-1, and after five recycling cycles, only a small loss of catalytic activity was observed. This shows that the prepared catalyst is a recyclable catalyst that can be used for reducing the nitrobenzene from hydrazine hydrate to aniline.

Self-Adaptive Liquid Film: Dynamic Realization of Dendrite-Free Zn Deposition Toward Ultralong-Life Aqueous Zn Battery

The poor reversibility and stability of Zn metal anode (ZMA) caused by uncontrolled Zn deposition behaviors and serious side reactions severely impeded the practical application of aqueous Zn metal battery. Herein, a liquid-dynamic and self-adaptive protective layer (LSPL) was constructed on the ZMA surface for inhibiting dendrites and by-products formation. Interestingly, the outer LSPL consists of liquid perfluoropolyether (PFPE), which can dynamically adapt volume change during repeat cycling and inhibit side reactions. Moreover, it can also decrease the de-solvation energy barrier of Zn2+ by strong interaction between C-F bond and foreign Zn2+ , improving Zn2+ transport kinetics. For the LSPL inner region, in-situ formed ZnF2 through the spontaneous chemical reaction between metallic Zn and part PFPE can establish an unimpeded Zn2+ migration pathway for accelerating ion transfer, thereby restricting Zn dendrites formation. Consequently, the LSPL-modified ZMA enables reversible Zn deposition/dissolution up to 2000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and high coulombic efficiency of 99.8% at 4 mA cm-2 . Meanwhile, LSPL@Zn||NH4 V4 O10 full cells deliver an ultralong cycling lifespan of 100 00 cycles with 0.0056% per cycle decay rate at 10 A g-1 . This self-adaptive layer provides a new strategy to improve the interface stability for next-generation aqueous Zn battery.

Lactobacillus reuteri inhibits Staphylococcus aureus-induced mastitis by regulating oxytocin releasing and gut microbiota in mice

Mastitis is the most frequent disease of cows and has well-recognized detrimental effects on animal wellbeing and dairy farm profitability. With the advent of the postantibiotic era, alternative antibiotic agents, especially probiotics, have received increasing attention in the treatment of mastitis. Based on research showing that Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) has anti-inflammatory effects, this study explored the protective effects and mechanisms of L. reuteri against mastitis induced by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in mice. First, mice with S. aureus-induced mastitis were orally administered L. reuteri, and the inflammatory response in the mammary gland was observed. The results showed that L. reuteri significantly inhibited S. aureus-induced mastitis. Moreover, the concentration of oxytocin (OT) and protein expression of oxytocin receptor (OTR) were measured, and inhibition of OTR or vagotomy reversed the protective effect of L. reuteri or its culture supernatant (LCS) on S. aureus-induced mastitis. In addition, in mouse mammary epithelial cells (MMECs), OT inhibited the inflammation induced by S. aureus by inhibiting the protein expression of OTR. It was suggested that L. reuteri protected against S. aureus-induced mastitis by releasing OT. Furthermore, microbiological analysis showed that the composition of the microbiota was altered, and the relative abundance of Lactobacillus was significantly increased in gut and mammary gland after treatment with L. reuteri or LCS. In conclusion, our study found the L. reuteri inhibited the mastitis-induced by S. aureus via promoting the release of OT, and treatment with L. reuteri increased the abundance of Lactobacillus in both gut and mammary gland.

Rituximab alleviates pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus associated refractory immune thrombocytopenia: a case-based review

A complication of pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (pSLE) is immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Although corticosteroids and immunoglobulins are frequently used as preliminary treatments, some patients do not respond to them. Rituximab has been reported to be safe and effective in the treatment of pSLE complicated with refractory ITP. Research is currently underway to determine the optimal rituximab dose for these individuals. We report a case of a child with SLE-associated ITP (SLE-ITP) who was successfully treated with rituximab. Rituximab is likely the most viable therapeutic option for refractory SLE-ITP. Furthermore, a comprehensive review of the relevant literature was performed and a concise overview of the pathogenesis and available treatment modalities for pediatric patients diagnosed with SLE and concurrent ITP was provided.

Combined Placental Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Guided Nanoparticles Effective Against Diabetic Nephropathy in Mouse Model

Background

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a prevalent complication of diabetes mellitus and constitutes the primary cause of mortality in affected patients. Previous studies have shown that placental mesenchymal stem cells (PL-MSCs) can alleviate kidney dysfunction in animal models of DN. However, the limited ability of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to home to damaged sites restricts their therapeutic potential. Enhancing the precision of PL-MSCs' homing to target tissues is therefore vital for the success of cell therapies in treating DN.

Methods

We developed Fe3O4 coated polydopamine nanoparticle (NP)-internalized MSCs and evaluated their therapeutic effectiveness in a mouse model of streptozotocin- and high-fat diet-induced DN, using an external magnetic field.

Results

Our study confirmed that NPs were effectively internalized into PL-MSCs without compromising their intrinsic stem cell properties. The magnetic targeting of PL-MSCs notably improved their homing to the kidney tissues in mice with DN, resulting in enhanced kidney function compared to the transplantation of PL-MSCs alone. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic attributes of PL-MSCs played a role in the recovery of kidney function and structure.

Conclusion

These results demonstrate that magnetically targeted therapy using PL-MSCs is a promising approach for treating diabetic nephropathy.

Amphiphilic Polyurethane with Cluster-Induced Emission for Multichannel Bioimaging in Living Cell Systems

The development of single-component materials with low cytotoxicity and multichannel fluorescence imaging capability is a research hotspot. In the present work, highly electron-deficient pyrazine monomers were covalently connected into a polyurethane backbone using addition polymerization with terminal poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether units containing a high density of electron pairs. Thereby, an amphiphilic polyurethane-pyrazine (PUP) derivative has been synthesized. The polymer displays cluster-induced emission through compact inter- and/or intramolecular noncovalent interactions and extensive through-space electron coupling and delocalization. Molecular rigidity facilitates red-shifted emission. Based on hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions and excitation dependence emission at low concentrations, PUP has been self-assembled into fluorescent nanoparticles (PUP NPs) without additional surfactant. PUP NPs have been used for cellular multicolor imaging to provide a variety of switchable colors on demand. This work provides a simple molecular design for environmentally sustainable, luminescent materials with excellent photophysical properties, biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and color modulation.

Recent progress in TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for water contaminants treatment: strategies to improve photocatalytic performance

Toxic organic pollutants in wastewater have seriously damaged human health and ecosystems. Photocatalytic degradation is a potential and efficient tactic for wastewater treatment. Among the entire carbon family, biochar has been developed for the adsorption of pollutants due to its large specific surface area, porous skeleton structure, and abundant surface functional groups. Hence, combining adsorption and photocatalytic decomposition, TiO2-biochar photocatalysts have received considerable attention and have been extensively studied. Owing to biochar's adsorption, more active sites and strong interactions between contaminants and photocatalysts can be achieved. The synergistic effect of biochar and TiO2 nanomaterials substantially improves the photocatalytic capacity for pollutant degradation. TiO2-biochar composites have numerous attractive properties and advantages, culminating in infinite applications. This review discusses the characteristics and preparation techniques of biochar, presents in situ and ex situ synthesis approaches of TiO2-biochar nanocomposites, explains the benefits of TiO2-biochar-based compounds for photocatalytic degradation, and emphasizes the strategies for enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts. Finally, the main difficulties and future advancements of TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysis are highlighted. The review gives an exhaustive overview of recent progress in TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for organic contaminants removal and is expected to encourage the development of robust TiO2-biochar-based photocatalysts for sewage remediation and other environmentally friendly uses.

Post-synthetic modified luminescent metal-organic framework for the detection of berberine hydrochloride in a traditional Chinese herb

In this work, a novel fluorescence sensor UiO-66-PSM based on post-synthetic modified metal-organic frameworks was prepared for the detection of berberine hydrochloride (BBH) in the traditional Chinese herb Coptis. UiO-66-PSM was synthesized by a simple Schiff base reaction with UiO-66-NH2 and phthalaldehyde (PAD). The luminescence quenching can be attributed to the photo-induced electron transfer process from the ligand of UiO-66-PSM to BBH. The UiO-66-PSM sensor exhibited fast response time, low detection limit, and high selectivity to BBH. Moreover, the UiO-66-PSM sensor was successfully applied to the quantitative detection of BBH in the traditional Chinese herb Coptis, and the detection results obtained from the as-fabricated fluorescence sensing assay were consistent with those of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), indicating that this work has potential applicability for the detection of BBH in traditional Chinese herbs.

Study on the degradation conditions of corn stalks by Asian corn borer digestive enzymes combined with white-rot fungus

Since the environmentally friendly reuse of corn stalks attracts more and more attention, it is an efficient and feasible way to reuse corn stalks as forage. However, whether the cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose within corn stalks can be effectively decomposed becomes a key to reusing corn stalks as forage. Orthogonal test was designed by five different degradation temperatures (22°C, 24°C, 26°C, 28°C, 30°C), five different pH values (4, 5, 6, 8, 10), and five different degradation time durations (5, 15, 25, 30, and 35 days) to examine 25 kinds of different degradation conditions. It was found that the decomposition effect of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin, of group 25 (26°C, pH = 5, 25 days) was stronger compared with other groups, with the contents calculated as 8.22%, 31.55%, and 22.55% individually (p < 0.01, p < 0.05). Group 19 (22°C, pH = 4, 5 days) revealed the worst degradation effect of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose compared to other groups, with contents calculated as 15.48%, 38.85%, and 29.57%, individually (p < 0.01, p < 0.05). The research data deliver a basis for ideal degradation conditions for corn stalks degradation in combination with the digestive enzymes of P. chrysosporium and O. furnacalis larva. Aiming to explore a highly efficient and environmentally friendly corn stalk degradation method.

Optimized DOX Drug Deliveries via Chitosan-Mediated Nanoparticles and Stimuli Responses in Cancer Chemotherapy: A Review

Chitosan nanoparticles (NPs) serve as useful multidrug delivery carriers in cancer chemotherapy. Chitosan has considerable potential in drug delivery systems (DDSs) for targeting tumor cells. Doxorubicin (DOX) has limited application due to its resistance and lack of specificity. Chitosan NPs have been used for DOX delivery because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, drug encapsulation efficiency, and target specificity. In this review, various types of chitosan derivatives are discussed in DDSs to enhance the effectiveness of cancer treatments. Modified chitosan-DOX NP drug deliveries with other compounds also increase the penetration and efficiency of DOX against tumor cells. We also highlight the endogenous stimuli (pH, redox, enzyme) and exogenous stimuli (light, magnetic, ultrasound), and their positive effect on DOX drug delivery via chitosan NPs. Our study sheds light on the importance of chitosan NPs for DOX drug delivery in cancer treatment and may inspire the development of more effective approaches for cancer chemotherapy.

Research on rice disease recognition based on improved SPPFCSPC-G YOLOv5 network

Spatial Pyramid Pooling (SPP) is important in capturing remote contextual information for pixel-level prediction tasks in scene-resolved detection of rice diseases. In this paper, the detection objects of the rice disease dataset used in this paper have almost the same target size and do not need to be passed through different filters to obtain different receptive fields of view. Therefore, this paper proposed a new pooling structure, SPPFCSPC-G, which split the feature vector into 2 channels for processing. One channel was processed using grouped 1×1 Conv, while the other channel mainly used multiple filters with the same parallel structure (5×5 MaxPool). Additionally, multiple 1×1 and 3×3 grouped convolutions were concatenated in series in that branch (Group-Conv) to extract more complex features in rice. Finally, the 2 parts were connected (Concat) together, with each convolutional layer Conv divided into 4 groups as a way to reduce the amount of computation in the model. The project team incorporated SPPFCSPC-G into the Backbone of YOLOv5 and trained it on NVIDIA Tesla T4 (GPU). The experimental results showed that the performance of the method used in this paper improved, including Precision, Recall, mAP, and training speed, while reducing the size of computational parameters (Parameters), computational volume (GFLOPs), and model size (Param.). The project team carried out the trained YOLOv5 model on Intel Core i5 (CPU) for inference detection of rice leaves in real scenarios, and the experiments showed that both pre-inference and actual inference were faster. Moreover, the consumption of computational resources was almost minimized, and the model effectively identified rice diseases.

Research status of indole-modified natural products

Indole is a heterocyclic compound formed by the fusion of a benzene ring and pyrrole ring, which has rich biological activity. Many indole-containing compounds have been sold on the market due to their excellent pharmacological activity. For example, vincristine and reserpine have been widely used in clinical practice. The diverse structures and biological activities of natural products provide abundant resources for the development of new drugs. Therefore, this review classifies natural products by structure, and summarizes the research progress of indole-containing natural product derivatives, their biological activities, structure-activity relationship and research mechanism which has been studied in the past 13 years, so as to provide a basis for the development of new drug development.

Occurrence, Bioaccumulation, Metabolism and Ecotoxicity of Fluoroquinolones in the Aquatic Environment: A Review

In recent years, there has been growing concern about antibiotic contamination in water bodies, particularly the widespread presence of fluoroquinolones (FQs), which pose a serious threat to ecosystems due to their extensive use and the phenomenon of "pseudo-persistence". This article provides a comprehensive review of the literature on FQs in water bodies, summarizing and analyzing contamination levels of FQs in global surface water over the past three years, as well as the bioaccumulation and metabolism patterns of FQs in aquatic organisms, their ecological toxicity, and the influencing factors. The results show that FQs contamination is widespread in surface water across the surveyed 32 countries, with ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin being the most heavy contaminants. Furthermore, contamination levels are generally higher in developing and developed countries. It has been observed that compound types, species, and environmental factors influence the bioaccumulation, metabolism, and toxicity of FQs in aquatic organisms. FQs tend to accumulate more in organisms with higher lipid content, and toxicity experiments have shown that FQs exhibit the highest toxicity to bacteria and the weakest toxicity to mollusk. This article summarizes and analyzes the current research status and shortcomings of FQs, providing guidance and theoretical support for future research directions.

Applications of Supramolecular Polymers Generated from Pillar[n]arene-Based Molecules

Supramolecular chemistry enables the manipulation of functional components on a molecular scale, facilitating a "bottom-up" approach to govern the sizes and structures of supramolecular materials. Using dynamic non-covalent interactions, supramolecular polymers can create materials with reversible and degradable characteristics and the abilities to self-heal and respond to external stimuli. Pillar[n]arene represents a novel class of macrocyclic hosts, emerging after cyclodextrins, crown ethers, calixarenes, and cucurbiturils. Its significance lies in its distinctive structure, comparing an electron-rich cavity and two finely adjustable rims, which has sparked considerable interest. Furthermore, the straightforward synthesis, uncomplicated functionalization, and remarkable properties of pillar[n]arene based on supramolecular interactions make it an excellent candidate for material construction, particularly in generating interpenetrating supramolecular polymers. Polymers resulting from supramolecular interactions involving pillar[n]arene find potential in various applications, including fluorescence sensors, substance adsorption and separation, catalysis, light-harvesting systems, artificial nanochannels, and drug delivery. In this context, we provide an overview of these recent frontier research fields in the use of pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular polymers, which serves as a source of inspiration for the creation of innovative functional polymer materials derived from pillar[n]arene derivatives.

Optimization strategies of high-entropy alloys for electrocatalytic applications

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are expected to become one of the most promising functional materials in the field of electrocatalysis due to their site-occupancy disorder and lattice order. The chemical complexity and component tunability make it possible for them to obtain a nearly continuous distribution of adsorption energy curve, which means that the optimal adsorption strength and maximum activity can be obtained by a multi-alloying strategy. In the last decade, a great deal of research has been performed on the synthesis, element selection and catalytic applications of HEAs. In this review, we focus on the analysis and summary of the advantages, design ideas and optimization strategies of HEAs in electrocatalysis. Combined with experiments and theories, the advantages of high activity and high stability of HEAs are explored in depth. According to the classification of catalytic reactions, how to design high-performance HEA catalysts is proposed. More importantly, efficient strategies for optimizing HEA catalysts are provided, including element regulation, defect regulation and strain engineering. Finally, we point out the challenges that HEAs will face in the future, and put forward some personal proposals. This work provides a deep understanding and important reference for electrocatalytic applications of HEAs.

Heterostructured Co-Doped-Cu2 O/Cu Synergistically Promotes Water Dissociation for Improved Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3 RR) has recently emerged as a promising approach for sustainable ammonia synthesis and wastewater treatment, while the activity and selectivity for ammonia production have remained low. Herein, rational design and controllable synthesis of heterostructured Co-doped Cu2 O/Cu nanoparticles embedded in carbon framework (Co-Cu2 O/Cu@C) is reported for NO3 RR. The Co-Cu2 O/Cu@C exhibits a high ammonia yield rate of 37.86 mg h-1  mg-1 cat. with 98.1% Faraday efficiency, which is higher than those obtained for most of the Cu-based catalysts under similar conditions. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the strong electronic interactions at Cu/Co-Cu2 O interface facilitate the N species deoxygenation process and doping of Co promotes water dissociation to generate * H for the N species hydrogenation process, leading to enhanced NO3 RR performance. This work provides a new design strategy toward high-performance catalysts toward NO3 RR for ammonia generation.

Exploring the Femtosecond Filamentation Threshold in Liquid Media Using a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

We experimentally studied the supercontinuum induced by femtosecond filamentation in different liquid media. Using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we determined the relative filamentation thresholds (Pth) of these media. Research has shown that the value of the filamentation threshold is greater than that of Pcr (critical power for self-focusing), which can mainly be attributed to the strong dispersion effect. Changing the focal length of the focusing lens affects filamentation dynamics, thereby affecting the measured results regarding the filamentation threshold. With shorter focal lengths, the linear focusing (i.e., geometrical focusing) regime dominates, and the measured values of Pth for different liquid media are almost the same; as the focal length becomes larger, self-focusing starts to play a role, making the values of Pth for different media different from each other. This study presents an efficient method for investigating the femtosecond filamentation phenomenon in liquid media, helpful to provide further insights into the physical mechanism of supercontinuum generation via femtosecond filamentation in liquid media.

The Role of Traditional Chinese Medicine Natural Products in β-Amyloid Deposition and Tau Protein Hyperphosphorylation in Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease is a prevalent form of dementia among elderly individuals and is characterized by irreversible neurodegeneration. Despite extensive research, the exact causes of this complex disease remain unclear. Currently available drugs for Alzheimer's disease treatment are limited in their effectiveness, often targeting a single aspect of the disease and causing significant adverse effects. Moreover, these medications are expensive, placing a heavy burden on patients' families and society as a whole. Natural compounds and extracts offer several advantages, including the ability to target multiple pathways and exhibit high efficiency with minimal toxicity. These attributes make them promising candidates for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. In this paper, we provide a summary of the common natural products used in Chinese medicine for different pathogeneses of AD. Our aim is to offer new insights and ideas for the further development of natural products in Chinese medicine and the treatment of AD.

Integral Imaging Display System Based on Human Visual Distance Perception Model

In an integral imaging (II) display system, the self-adjustment ability of the human eye can result in blurry observations when viewing 3D targets outside the focal plane within a specific range. This can impact the overall imaging quality of the II system. This research examines the visual characteristics of the human eye and analyzes the path of light from a point source to the eye in the process of capturing and reconstructing the light field. Then, an overall depth of field (DOF) model of II is derived based on the human visual system (HVS). On this basis, an II system based on the human visual distance (HVD) perception model is proposed, and an interactive II display system is constructed. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. The display system improves the viewing distance range, enhances spatial resolution and provides better stereoscopic display effects. When comparing our method with three other methods, it is clear that our approach produces better results in optical experiments and objective evaluations: the cumulative probability of blur detection (CPBD) value is 38.73%, the structural similarity index (SSIM) value is 86.56%, and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) value is 31.12. These values align with subjective evaluations based on the characteristics of the human visual system.

Reshaping Inner Helmholtz Layer and Electrolyte Structure via Multifunctional Organic Molecule Enabling Dendrite-Free Zn Metal Anode

The dendrite growth and parasitic reactions that occur on Zn metal anode (ZMA)/electrolyte interface hinder the development of aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) in next-generation renewable energy storage systems. Fortunately, reconstructing the inner Helmholtz layer (IHL) by introducing an electrolyte additive, is viewed as one of the most promising strategies to harvest the stable ZMA. Herein, (4-chloro-3-nitrophenyl) (pyridin-4-yl) methanone (CNPM) with quadruple functional groups is introduced into the ZnSO4 electrolyte to reshape the interface between ZMA and electrolyte and change the solvation structure of Zn2+ . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations manifest that the ─C═O, ─Cl, ─C═N─, and ─NO2 functional groups of CNPM interact with metallic Zn simultaneously and adsorb on the ZMA surface in a parallel arrangement manner, thus forming a water-poor IHL and creating well-arranged ion transportation channels. Furthermore, theoretical calculations and experimental results demonstrate that CNPM absorbed on the Zn anode surface can serve as zincophilic sites for inducing uniform Zn deposition along the (002) plane. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of these functions, the dendrite growth and parasitic reactions are suppressed significantly. As a result, ZMA exhibits a long cycle life (2900 h) and high coulombic efficiency (CE) (500 cycles) in the ZnSO4 +CNPM electrolyte.

Ion Pre-Embedding Engineering of δ-MnO2 for Chemically Self-Charging Aqueous Zinc Ions Batteries

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs), especially those with self-charging properties, have been promisingly developed in recent years. Yet, most inorganic materials feature high redox potential, which limit their development in the self-charging field. To achieve this target, by pre-embedding potassium ions into δ-MnO2 to reduce the energy barrier in oxygen adsorption, the first application of MnO2 in self-charging ZIBs is realized. The design features a facile two-electrode configuration with no excessively complex component to allow for energy storage and conversion. Due to the voltage difference between the oxygen in the air and the discharge products, a redox reaction can be carried out spontaneously to realize the self-charging process. After the chemical self-charging process, the Zn-K0.37 MnO2 ·0.54H2 O/C cell achieves an open circuit voltage of around 1.42 V and a discharge capacity of 201 mAh g-1 , reflecting the promising self-charging capability. Besides, the chemically self-charging ZIBs operate well in multiple modes of constant current charge/discharge/chemical charging. And decent cycling capability can also be achieved at extreme temperatures and high mass loading. This work promotes the development of ZIBs and further broadens the application of inorganic metal oxides in the self-charging systems.

The role of IL-33 in depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Depression has long been considered a disease involving immune hyperactivation. The impact of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 on depression has been widely studied. However, the effect of IL-33, another pro-inflammatory cytokine, has been less researched. Currently, research on the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk is inconsistent. In response to these divergent results, we conducted a review and meta-analysis aimed at resolving published research on the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk, and understanding the potential role of IL-33 in the development and treatment of depression. After searching different databases, we analyzed 8 studies. Our meta-analysis showed that IL-33 had a positive correlation with reduced risk of depression. The pooled standard mean differences (SMD) = 0.14, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.05-0.24. Subgroup analysis results showed that IL-33 and ST2 levels in cerebrospinal fluid and serum is positive correlated with reduced risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). According to the characteristics of the included literature, the results mainly focuses on Caucasian. Furthermore, according to the subgroup analysis of depression-related data sources for disease or treatment, the correlation between IL-33 and depression risk is reflected throughout the entire process of depression development and treatment. Therefore, the change of IL-33 level in serum and cerebrospinal fluid can serve as useful indicators for assessing the risk of depression, and the biomarker provides potential treatment strategies for reducing the burden of the disease.

Multicolor Luminescence of a Polyurethane Derivative Driven by Heat/Light-Induced Aggregation

The study of aggregate formation and its controllable effect on luminescence behavior has a far-reaching influence in establishing a universal aggregation photophysical mechanism. In this paper, we obtained clusters with different extents of aggregation by heat-induced or light-triggered aggregation of a new polyurethane derivative (PUE). The controllable regulation of multicolor fluorescence of a single (nondoped) polymeric material is realized. The luminescence behavior of PUE varies with microscopic control of the aggregation structure. Compared with the powder state, the enhanced atom-atom and group-group interactions of PUE-gel effectively limit the nonradiative transitions in the excited state and result in a red-shift in emission. This work avoids complex organic synthesis and demonstrates a simple strategy to induce aggregation and regulate the emitting color of macromolecules, providing a template for developing new materials for multicolor fluorescence. In addition, a pattern was constructed with encryption, anticounterfeiting, and information transmission functions which provide a proof-of-concept demonstration of the practical potential of PUE as a smart material.

Effects of the pre-existing coronary heart disease on the prognosis of COVID-19 patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Although studies have shown severe Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes in patients with pre-existing coronary heart disease (CHD), the prognosis of COVID-19 patients with pre-existing CHD remains uncertain primarily due to the limited number of patients in existing studies. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of pre-existing CHD on the prognosis of COVID-19 patients. Five electronic databases were searched for eligible studies. This article focused on cohort and case-control studies involving the prognosis of COVID-19 patients with pre-existing CHD. The meta-analysis was performed using a random effects model. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used as valid indicators. The study was registered in PROSPERO with the identifier: CRD42022352853. A total of 81 studies, involving 157,439 COVID-19 patients, were included. The results showed that COVID-19 patients with pre-existing CHD exhibited an elevated risk of mortality (OR = 2.45; 95%CI: [2.04, 2.94], P < 0.001), severe/critical COVID-19 (OR = 2.57; 95%CI: [1.98, 3.33], P < 0.001), Intensive Care Unit or Coronary Care Unit (ICU/CCU) admission: (OR = 2.75, 95%CI: [1.61, 4.72], P = 0.002), and reduced odds of discharge/recovery (OR = 0.43, 95%CI: [0.28, 0.66], P < 0.001) compared to COVID-19 patients without pre-existing CHD. Subgroup analyses indicated that the prognosis of COVID-19 patients with pre-existing CHD was influenced by publication year, follow-up duration, gender, and hypertension. In conclusion, pre-existing CHD significantly increases the risk of poor prognosis in patients with COVID-19, particularly in those male or hypertensive patients.

Ru(II)-Catalyzed N-Methylation of Amines Using Methanol as the C1 Source

Four ruthenium complexes were used as catalysts for the N-methylation of amines using methanol as the C1 source under weak base conditions. The (DPEPhos)RuCl2PPh3(1a) catalyst showed the best catalytic performance (0.5 mol %, 12 h). The deuterium labeling and control experiments suggested the reaction via the Ru-H mechanism. This study provides a new ruthenium catalyst system for N-methylation with methanol under weak base conditions.

Occurrence and Health Risk Assessment of Sulfonamide Antibiotics in Different Freshwater Fish in Northeast China

This study aimed to investigate the levels of 12 sulfonamide antibiotics in freshwater fish species obtained from three cities in northeastern China (Harbin, Changchun, and Shenyang). The analysis was conducted using HPLC-MS/MS to accurately quantify the antibiotic concentrations in the fish samples. The results showed that the average levels of sulfonamide antibiotics in fish samples from Harbin, Changchun, and Shenyang were 1.83 ng/g ww, 0.98 ng/g ww, and 1.60 ng/g ww, respectively. Sulfamethoxazole displayed the highest levels and detection rates in all three cities, whereas sulphapyridine exhibited the lowest concentrations in all the fish samples. The levels of sulfonamide antibiotic residues in the different fish species varied widely among the cities, and the highest level of antibiotic residues was found in the muscle of carnivorous fish. The results from a health risk evaluation on the consumption of these fish indicated that the risk from long-term antibiotic exposure to local residents from the intake of the sampled fish was small and not sufficient to pose a significant health risk to consumers.

Spectral properties of B40 enhanced by small molecule adsorption

The luminescence characteristics of small molecule excited B40 have not been studied yet, and it may have a potential application value in quantum dot luminescence. Herein, the adsorption and fluorescence emission spectra of small molecules (pyridine, pyrazine and benzene) adsorbed on B40 are studied using first-principles. The results show that the absorption of pyridine and pyrazine on B40 can form stable chemisorption structures pyridine-B40 and pyrazine-B40, while benzene adsorption can form physisorption structure benzene-B40. Moreover, the adsorbed pyridine can enhance the intensity of emission spectra of B40. And the pyrazine adsorbed can obviously enhance the intensity of absorption and emission spectra of B40 and cause the spectra to redshift to the visible light range. And the adsorption of benzene has almost no enhancement effect on absorption and emission spectra of B40. In addition, the influence of different computational basis sets on spectra characteristics has also been discussed and the results show that the main peaks of absorption and emission spectra calculated by the diffuse function augmented basis sets are redshifted relatively. This finding provides a strategy for quantum dot luminescence and a theoretical reference for experimental research.

Polysaccharides: potential bioactive macromolecules for Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the leading causes of death and disability. AD is a devastating disease that has caused an overwhelming burden. However, no disease-modified treatment was discovered. The approval of sodium oligomannate (GV-971) in mild-moderate AD patients has attracted great attention to investigate the role of saccharides in AD. Therefore, summarizing and explaining the role of saccharides in AD is urgent and promising. Recent studies showed that polysaccharides (PSs) potentially benefit AD in vitro and in vivo. PSs could alleviate the pathological damage and improve cognitive symptoms via (1) antagonizing the toxicity of abnormal amyloid-beta and tau proteins; (2) attenuating oxidative stress and proinflammation; (3) rebuilding neuroplasticity. PSs exhibit one-multiple pathological hits of AD. However, a thorough chemical investigation is needed for further study.

Recent progress in epidemiology, clinical features, and therapy of multiple sclerosis in China

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system characterized by inflammation, demyelination, and neurodegeneration. It mainly affects young adults, imposing a heavy burden on families and society. The epidemiology, clinical features, and management of MS are distinct among different countries. Although MS is a rare disease in China, there are 1.4 billion people in China, so the total number of MS patients is not small. Because of the lack of specific diagnostic biomarkers for MS, there is a high misdiagnosis rate in China, as in other regions. Due to different genetic backgrounds, the clinical manifestations of MS in Chinese are different from those in the West. Herein, this review aims to summarize the disease comprehensively, including clinical profile and the status of disease-modifying therapies in China based on published population-based observation and cohort studies, and also to compare with data from other countries and regions, thus providing help to develop diagnostic guideline and the novel therapeutic drugs. Meanwhile, we also discuss the problems and challenges we face, specifically for the diagnosis and treatment of MS in the middle- and low-income countries.

Superior Carrier Mobility Enabled by the Charge Channel Leads to Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in BiCuSeO Composites

BiCuSeO oxyselenides possess a highlighted thermoelectric performance among oxides, which originates from their intrinsically low thermal conductivity. However, intrinsic factors causing low thermal transport are also detrimental to carrier transport, leading to ultralow carrier mobility and relatively low electrical transport properties. Here, high-conductivity single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are adopted as the charge channels to be embedded in a BiCuSeO-based matrix, providing a transport pathway for charge carriers. The results show that carrier mobility is increased to 188 cm2 V-1 s-1 due to the SWCNTs composited, triggering an enhancement in electrical transport properties. Besides, the SWCNTs embedded in the matrix introduce abundant interfaces, suppressing phonon transport and depressing lattice thermal conductivity. With these achievements, a maximum zT of 0.84 at 818 K is realized in the composite with 0.1 wt% SWCNTs. The mechanical property of the composites is strengthened as well because of the SWCNTs. The work indicates that the SWCNTs, as the charge channels, propose an effective approach for enhancing carrier mobility in BiCuSeO-based materials, finally optimizing the thermoelectric performance as well as the mechanical property.

Electron delocalization of robust high-nuclear bismuth-oxo clusters for promoted CO2 electroreduction

The integration of high activity, selectivity and stability in one electrocatalyst is highly desirable for electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR), yet it is still a knotty issue. The unique electronic properties of high-nuclear clusters may bring about extraordinary catalytic performance; however, construction of a high-nuclear structure for ECR remains a challenging task. In this work, a family of calix[8]arene-protected bismuth-oxo clusters (BiOCs), including Bi4 (BiOC-1/2), Bi8Al (BiOC-3), Bi20 (BiOC-4), Bi24 (BiOC-5) and Bi40Mo2 (BiOC-6), were prepared and used as robust and efficient ECR catalysts. The Bi40Mo2 cluster in BiOC-6 is the largest metal-oxo cluster encapsulated by calix[8]arenes. As an electrocatalyst, BiOC-5 exhibited outstanding electrochemical stability and 97% Faraday efficiency for formate production at a low potential of -0.95 V vs. RHE, together with a high turnover frequency of up to 405.7 h-1. Theoretical calculations reveal that large-scale electron delocalization of BiOCs is achieved, which promotes structural stability and effectively decreases the energy barrier of rate-determining *OCHO generation. This work provides a new perspective for the design of stable high-nuclear clusters for efficient electrocatalytic CO2 conversion.

Identification of monotonically expressed long non-coding RNA signatures for breast cancer using variational autoencoders

As breast cancer is a multistage progression disease resulting from a genetic sequence of mutations, understanding the genes whose expression values increase or decrease monotonically across pathologic stages can provide insightful clues about how breast cancer initiates and advances. Utilizing variational autoencoder (VAE) networks in conjunction with traditional statistical testing, we successfully ascertain long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that exhibit monotonically differential expression values in breast cancer. Subsequently, we validate that the identified lncRNAs really present monotonically changed patterns. The proposed procedure identified 248 monotonically decreasing expressed and 115 increasing expressed lncRNAs. They correspond to a total of 65 and 33 genes respectively, which possess unique known gene symbols. Some of them are associated with breast cancer, as suggested by previous studies. Furthermore, enriched pathways by the target mRNAs of these identified lncRNAs include the Wnt signaling pathway, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and Rap 1 signaling pathway, which have been shown to play crucial roles in the initiation and development of breast cancer. Additionally, we trained a VAE model using the entire dataset. To assess the effectiveness of the identified lncRNAs, a microarray dataset was employed as the test set. The results obtained from this evaluation were deemed satisfactory. In conclusion, further experimental validation of these lncRNAs with a large-sized study is warranted, and the proposed procedure is highly recommended.

Bitter Peptides in Fermented Soybean Foods - A Review

Fermented soybean foods with a long history are popular worldwide because of rich nutrition. However, many traditional fermented soybean foods have unacceptable bitterness, which mostly comes from the bitter peptides produced from the hydrolysis of soybean proteins. In this review, the bitter peptides in fermented soybean foods is briefly reviewed. The structural properties of bitter receptors and bitter peptides were reviewed. Bitterness is perceived through the binding between bitter compounds and specific sites of bitter receptors (25 hTAS2Rs), which further activate the downstream signal pathway mediated by G-protein. And it converts chemical signals into electrical signals, and transmit them to the brain. In addition, the influencing factors of bitter peptides in fermented soybean foods were summarized. The bitterness of fermented soybean foods primarily results from the raw materials, microbial metabolism during fermentation, unique techniques, and interactions of various flavor compounds. Moreover, the structure-bitterness relationship of bitter peptides was also discussed in this review. The bitterness degree of the bitter peptide is related to the polypeptide hydrophobicity, amino acids in the peptide, peptide molecular weight and polypeptide spatial structure. Studying the bitter peptides and their bitter characteristics in fermented soybean foods is beneficial for improving the sensory quality of fermented soybean foods and prompting more consumers accept them.

Intragraft immune cells: accomplices or antagonists of recipient-derived macrophages in allograft fibrosis?

Organ fibrosis caused by chronic allograft rejection is a major concern in the field of transplantation. Macrophage-to-myofibroblast transition plays a critical role in chronic allograft fibrosis. Adaptive immune cells (such as B and CD4⁺ T cells) and innate immune cells (such as neutrophils and innate lymphoid cells) participate in the occurrence of recipient-derived macrophages transformed to myofibroblasts by secreting cytokines, which eventually leads to fibrosis of the transplanted organ. This review provides an update on the latest progress in understanding the plasticity of recipient-derived macrophages in chronic allograft rejection. We discuss here the immune mechanisms of allograft fibrosis and review the reaction of immune cells in allograft. The interactions between immune cells and the process of myofibroblast formulation are being considered for the potential therapeutic targets of chronic allograft fibrosis. Therefore, research on this topic seems to provide novel clues for developing strategies for preventing and treating allograft fibrosis.

Molecular structures of 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid for removing calcium sulfate scale under different pH conditions

As an important descaling agent, 1-hydroxyethane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) is capable of dissolving calcium sulfate scale when the pH of HEDP solution is adjusted from acidic to weakly alkaline. The molecular structures of Ca-HEDP complexes were determined to understand the impact of pH on the dissolution of calcium sulfate scale. The structures of the complexes revealed that the two phosphonic acid groups and the hydroxyl group of HEDP each provide one O atom to coordinate with the Ca ion to form a stable three-coordinate configuration under alkaline conditions. The electronic structures were investigated by interaction region indicator analysis, atoms in molecules analysis, electron localization function and natural population analysis. The deprotonation of the phosphonic acid group enhances the binding of coordinated O atoms and Ca ions as the pH increases, and weak alkalinity is the optimal process condition as strong alkaline conditions result in the precipitation of hydroxide and Ca ions.

Parameter Identification of Model for Piezoelectric Actuators

Piezoelectric actuators are widely used in high-precision positioning systems. The nonlinear characteristics of piezoelectric actuators, such as multi-valued mapping and frequency-dependent hysteresis, severely limit the advancement of the positioning system's accuracy. Therefore, a particle swarm genetic hybrid parameter identification method is proposed by combining the directivity of the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the genetic random characteristics of the genetic algorithm. Thus, the global search and optimization abilities of the parameter identification approach are improved, and the problems, including the genetic algorithm's poor local search capability and the particle swarm optimization algorithm's ease of falling into local optimal solutions, are resolved. The nonlinear hysteretic model of piezoelectric actuators is established based on the hybrid parameter identification algorithm proposed in this paper. The output of the model of the piezoelectric actuator is in accordance with the real output obtained from the experiments, and the root mean square error is only 0.029423 μm. The experimental and simulation results show that the model of piezoelectric actuators established by the proposed identification method can describe the multi-valued mapping and frequency-dependent nonlinear hysteresis characteristics of piezoelectric actuators.

Elder and booster vaccination associates with decreased risk of serious clinical outcomes in comparison of Omicron and Delta variant: A meta-analysis of SARS-CoV-2 infection

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic brings great pressure to the public health systems. This meta-analysis aimed to compare the clinical outcomes among different virus variants, to clarify their impact on medical resources and to provide evidence for the formulation of epidemic prevention policies.

Methods

A systematic literature search was performed in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases using the key words "Omicron" and "Delta." The adjusted Risk ratios (RRs), Odds ratios (ORs) and Hazard ratios (HRs) were extracted, and RRs and Rate difference % (RD%) were used to interpret the risk estimates of the outcomes ultimately.

Results

Forty-three studies were included, with 3,812,681 and 14,926,841 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 Delta and Omicron variant, respectively. The relative risks of hospitalization, death, ICU admission, and mechanical ventilation use after infection with the Omicron variant were all significantly reduced compared those after infection with the Delta variant (RRhospitalization = 0.45, 95%CI: 0.40-0.52; RRdeath = 0.37, 95%CI: 0.30-0.45; RRICU = 0.35, 95%CI: 0.29-0.42; RRmechanical ventilation = 0.33, 95%CI: 0.25-0.44). The change of both absolute and relative risks for hospitalization was more evident (RR = 0.47, 95%CI: 0.42-0.53；RD% =10.61, 95%CI: 8.64-12.59) and a significant increase was observed for the absolute differences in death in the elderly (RD% = 5.60, 95CI%: 4.65-6.55); the change of the absolute differences in the risk of hospitalization and death were most markedly observed in the patients with booster vaccination (RD%hospitalization = 8.60, 95CI%: 5.95-11.24; RD%death = 3.70, 95CI%: 0.34-7.06).

Conclusion

The ability of the Omicron variant to cause severe clinical events has decreased significantly, as compared with the Delta variant, but vulnerable populations still need to be vigilant. There was no interaction between the vaccination doses and different variants.

A review of additives use in straw composting

Straw composting is not only a process of decomposition and re-synthesis of organic matter, but also a process of harmless treatment, avoiding air pollution caused by straw burning. Many factors, including raw materials, humidity, C/N, and microbial structure, may determine the composting process and the quality of final product. In recent years, many researches have focused on composting quality improvement by adding one or more exogenous substances, including inorganic additives, organic additives, and microbial agents. Although a few review publications have compiled the research on the use of additives in composting, none of them has specifically addressed the composting of crop straw. Additives used in straw composting can increase degradation of recalcitrant substances and provide ideal living surroundings for microorganism, and thus reduce nitrogen loss and promote humus formation, etc. This review's objective is to critically evaluate the impact of various additives on straw composting process, and analyze how these additives enhance final quality of composting. Furthermore, a vision for future perspectives is provided. This paper can serve as a reference for straw composting process optimization and composting end-product improvement.
