Abstract
The development of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) is impeded by the shuttle effect of polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish nucleation of Li2S. To address these challenges, incorporating electrocatalysts into sulfur host materials represents an effective strategy for promoting polysulfide conversion, in tandem with the rational design of multifunctional sulfur host materials. In this study, Pt nanoparticles are integrated into biomass-derived carbon materials by solution deposition method. Pt, as an electrocatalyst, not only enhances the electrical conductivity of sulfur cathodes and effectively immobilizes LiPSs but also catalyzes the redox reactions of sulfur species bidirectionally. Additionally, Pt helps regulate the 3D deposition and growth of Li2S while reducing the reaction energy barrier. Consequently, this accelerates the conversion of LiPSs in LSBs. Furthermore, the catalytic ability of Pt for the redox reactions of sulfur species, along with its influence on the 3D deposition and growth of Li2S, is elucidated using electrochemical kinetic analyses and classical models of electrochemical deposition. The cathodes exhibit a high initial specific capacity of 1019.1 mAh g-1 at 1 C and a low decay rate of 0.045% over 1500 cycles. This study presents an effective strategy to regulate Li2S nucleation and enhance the kinetics of polysulfide conversion in LSBs.

Impact of medical insurance access negotiation on the utilization of innovative anticancer drugs in China: an interrupted time series analysis. BMC Health Serv Res 2024; 24:90. [PMID: 38233857 PMCID: PMC10792910 DOI: 10.1186/s12913-023-10393-y] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/17/2023] [Accepted: 11/29/2023] [Indexed: 01/19/2024] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND The high costs of innovative anticancer drugs hinder a number of cancer patients' access to these drugs in China. To address this problem, in 2018, the medical insurance access negotiation (MIAN) policy was implemented, when the prices of 17 innovative anticancer drugs were successfully negotiated and they were therefore included in the reimbursement list. This study aimed to explore the impact of the MIAN policy on the utilization of innovative anticancer drugs. METHODS With monthly data on drug expenditures and defined daily doses (DDDs) of each innovative anticancer drug from January 2017 to December 2019, interrupted time series analysis was employed to estimate both the instant (change in the level of outcome) and long-term (change in trends of outcomes) impacts of the MIAN policy on drug utilization in terms of drug expenditures and DDDs. Our sample consists of 12 innovative anticancer drugs. RESULTS From January 2017 to December 2019, the monthly drug expenditures and DDDs of 12 innovative anticancer drugs increased by about 573% (from US$8,931,809.30 to US$51,138,331.09) and 1400% (from 47,785 to 668,754), respectively. Overall, the implementation of the MIAN policy led to instant substantial increases of US$8,734,414 in drug expenditures and 158,192.5 in DDDs. Moreover, a sharper upward trend over time was reported, with increases of US$2,889,078 and 38,715.3 in the monthly growth rates of drug expenditures and DDDs, respectively. Regarding individual innovative anticancer drugs, the most prominent instant change and trend change in drug utilization were found for osimertinib, crizotinib, and ibrutinib. In contrast, the utilization of pegaspargase was barely affected by the MIAN policy. CONCLUSIONS The MIAN policy has effectively promoted the utilization of innovative anticancer drugs. To ensure the continuity of the effects and eliminate differentiation, supplementary measures should be carried out, such as careful selection of drugs for medical insurance negotiations, a health technology assessment system and a multichannel financing mechanism.

Calcium-sensing receptor and NF-κB pathways in TN breast cancer contribute to cancer-induced cardiomyocyte damage via activating neutrophil extracellular traps formation. Cell Mol Life Sci 2024; 81:19. [PMID: 38196005 PMCID: PMC11073098 DOI: 10.1007/s00018-023-05051-9] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/18/2023] [Revised: 10/26/2023] [Accepted: 10/28/2023] [Indexed: 01/11/2024]
Abstract
Cardiovascular disorders are commonly prevalent in cancer patients, yet the mechanistic link between them remains poorly understood. Because neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have implications not just in cardiovascular diseases (CVD), but also in breast cancer (BC), it was hypothesized to contribute to CVD in the context of oncogenesis. We established a mouse model using nude mice to simulate liver metastasis of triple-negative BC (TNBC) through the injection of MDA-MB-231 cells. Multiple imaging and analysis techniques were employed to assess the cardiac function and structure, including echocardiography, HE staining, Masson staining, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). MDA-MB-231 cells underwent treatment with a CaSR inhibitor, CaSR agonist, and NF-κB channel blocker. The phosphorylation of NF-κB channel protein p65 and the expression and secretion of IL-8 were assessed using qRT-PCR, Western Blot, and ELISA, respectively. In addition, MDA-MB-231 cells were co-cultured with polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) under varying conditions. The co-localization of PMN extracellular myeloperoxidase (MPO) and DNA were observed by cellular immunofluorescence staining to identify the formation of NETs. Then, the cardiomyocytes were co-cultured with the above medium that contains NETs or not, respectively; the effects of NETs on cardiomyocytes apoptosis were perceived by flow cytometry. The ultrastructural changes of myocardial cells were perceived by TEM, and ELISA detected the levels of myocardial enzyme (LDH, MDA and SOD). Overall, according to our research, CaSR has been found to have a regulatory role in IL-8 secretion in MDA-MB-231 cells, as well as in the formation of NETs by PMN cells. These findings suggest CaSR-mediated stimulation in PMN can lead to increased NETs formation and subsequently to cytotoxicity in cardiomyocytes, which potentially via activation of the NF-κB signaling cascade of BC cell.

Abstract
The present study selected 5, 5'-((6-(ethylamino)-1, 3, 5-triazine-2, 4-diyl) bis(azanediyl))diisophthalic acid (H4EATDIA) as ligand and an amino-functionalized cuprum-based MOF (EA-JUC-1000), successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted method, for proton conduction and dopamine sensing applications. In order to enhance the proton-conducting potential of EA-JUC-1000, the Brönsted acid (BA) encapsulated composites (BA@EA-JUC-1000) are dopped into chitosan (CS) to form a series of hybrid membranes (BA@EA-JUC-1000/CS). The impedance results display that the best proton conductivity of CF3SO3H@EA-JUC-1000/CS-8% reaches up to 1.23 × 10-3 S∙cm-1 at 338 K and ~ 98% RH, 2.6-fold than that of CS. Moreover, the EA-JUC-1000 is in-situ combined with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (rGO/EA-JUC-1000), which makes EA-JUC-1000 have a wide detection range (0.1 ~ 500 μM) and a low limit of detection (50 nM), together with good anti-interference performance, reproducibility and repeatability. In addition, the electrochemical sensing method has been successfully applied to detect DA in bovine serum samples. The dual-functional MOF-based hybrid membrane and composites including proton conduction and DA sensing would provide an example of practical application for MOFs.

Abstract
The technical synergy between flexible sensing paper and triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) in the next stage of artificial intelligence Internet of Things engineering makes the development of intelligent sensing paper with triboelectric function very attractive. Therefore, it is extremely urgent to explore functional papers that are more suitable for triboelectric sensing. Here, a cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) reinforced PVDF hybrid paper (CPHP) is developed by electrospinning technology. Benefitting from the unique effects of CNCs, CPHP forms a solid cross-linked network among fibers and obtains a high-strength (25 MPa) paper-like state and high surface roughness. Meanwhile, CNCs also improve the triboelectrification effect of CPHP by assisting the PVDF matrix to form more electroactive phases (96% share) and a higher relative permittivity (17.9). The CPHP-based TENG with single electrode configuration demonstrates good output performance (open-circuit voltage of 116 V, short-circuit current of 2.2 µA and power density of 91 mW m-2 ) and ultrahigh pressure-sensitivity response (3.95 mV Pa-1 ), which endows CPHP with reliable power supply and sensing capability. More importantly, the CPHP-based flexible self-powered tactile sensor with TENG array exhibits multifunctional applications in imitation Morse code compilation, tactile track recognition, and game character control, showing great prospects in the intelligent inductive device and human-machine interaction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop deep learning (DL) prediction models using transvaginal ultrasound (TVS), transabdominal ultrasound (TAS), and color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) of TVS (CDFI_TVS) to automatically predict benign or malignant ovarian tumors. METHODS This retrospective study included women with ovarian tumors who underwent ultrasound between August 2018 and October 2022. Histopathological analysis was used as a reference standard. The dataset was preprocessed by clipping, flipping, and rotating images to generate a larger, more complicated, and diverse dataset to improve accuracy and generalizability. The dataset was then divided into training (80%) and test (20%) sets. The weights of the models, modified from the residual network (ResNet) with the TVS, TAS, and CDFI_TVS images (hereafter, referred to as DLTVS , DLTAS , and DLCDFI_TVS , respectively) were developed. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis in the test set was used to compare the predictive value of DL for malignancy. RESULTS A total of 2340 images from 1350 women with adnexal masses were included. DLTVS had an AUC of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.93-0.97) for classifying malignant and benign ovarian tumors, comparable with that of DLTAS (AUC, 0.95; 95% CI: 0.91-0.98; p = 0.96) and DLCDFI_TVS (AUC, 0.88; 95% CI: 0.84-0.93; p = 0.02). Decision curve analysis indicated that DLTVS performed better than DLTAS and DLCDFI_TVS . CONCLUSION We developed DL models based on TVS, TAS, and CDFI_TVS on ultrasound images to predict benign and malignant ovarian tumors with high diagnostic performance. The DLTVS model had the best prediction compared with the DLTAS and DLCDFI_TVS models.

Abstract
In recent times, the research on cathode materials for aqueous rechargeable magnesium ion battery has gained significant attention. The focus is on enhancing high-rate performance and cycle stability, which has become the primary research goal. Manganese oxide and its derived Na-Mn-O system have been considered as one of the most promising electrode materials due to its low cost, non-toxicity and stable spatial structure. This work uses hydrothermal method to prepare titanium gradient doped nano sodium manganese oxides, and uses freeze-drying technology to prepare magnesium ion battery cathode materials with high tap density. At the initial current density of 50 mA g-1 , the NMTO-5 material exhibits a high reversible capacity of 231.0 mAh g-1 , even at a current density of 1000 mA g-1 , there is still 122.1 mAh g-1 . It is worth noting that after 180 cycles of charging and discharging at a gradually increasing current density such as 50-1000 mA g-1 , it can still return to the original level after returning to 50 mA g-1 . Excellent electrochemical performance and capacity stability show that NMTO-5 material is a promising electrode material.

Abstract
To reduce the usage of petroleum-based plastic products, a lignin-based film material named aminated lignin/Fe(III)/PVA was developed. The mixture of 8 g lignin, 12 mL diethylenetriamine, 200 mL NaOH solution (0.4 mol·L-1), and 8 mL formaldehyde was heated at 85 °C for 4 h; after the aminated lignin was impregnated in the Fe(NO3)3 solution, a mixture of 3 g aminated lignin/Fe(III), 7 g PVA, and 200 mL NaOH solution (pH 8) was heated at 85 °C for 60 min; after 2 mL of glycerin was added, the mixture was spread on a glass plate to obtain the aminated lignin/Fe(III)/PVA film. This film demonstrated hydrophobicity, an UV-blocking function, and a good slow-release performance. Due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of lignin and PVA, the tensile strength, the elongation at break, and the fracture resistance of the film were 9.1%, 107.8%, and 21.9% higher than that of pure PVA film, respectively. The iron content of aminated lignin/Fe(III)/PVA was 1.06 wt%, which mainly existed in a trivalent form. The aminated lignin/Fe(III)/PVA film has the potential to be used as a food packaging material with anti-ultraviolet light function and can also be developed as other packaging materials, such as seedling bowls, pots for transplanting, and coating films during transport.

Fine Mapping and Candidate Gene Analysis of Rice Grain Length QTL qGL9.1. Int J Mol Sci 2023; 24:11447. Abstract
Grain length (GL) is one of the crucial determinants of rice yield and quality. However, there is still a shortage of knowledge on the major genes controlling the inheritance of GL in japonica rice, which severely limits the improvement of japonica rice yields. Here, we systemically measured the GL of 667 F2 and 1570 BC3F3 individuals derived from two cultivated rice cultivars, Pin20 and Songjing15, in order to identify the major genomic regions associated with GL. A novel major QTL, qGL9.1, was mapped on chromosome 9, which is associated with the GL, using whole-genome re-sequencing with bulked segregant analysis. Local QTL linkage analysis with F2 and fine mapping with the recombinant plant revealed a 93-kb core region on qGL9.1 encoding 15 protein-coding genes. Only the expression level of LOC_Os09g26970 was significantly different between the two parents at different stages of grain development. Moreover, haplotype analysis revealed that the alleles of Pin20 contribute to the optimal GL (9.36 mm) and GL/W (3.31), suggesting that Pin20 is a cultivated species carrying the optimal GL variation of LOC_Os09g26970. Furthermore, a functional-type mutation (16398989-bp, G>A) located on an exon of LOC_Os09g26970 could be used as a molecular marker to distinguish between long and short grains. Our experiments identified LOC_Os09g26970 as a novel gene associated with GL in japonica rice. This result is expected to further the exploration of the genetic mechanism of rice GL and improve GL in rice japonica varieties by marker-assisted selection.

Abstract
A one-selector one resistor (1S1R) array formed of a selector and resistive random access memory (RRAM) is an important way to achieve high-density storage and neuromorphic computing. However, the low durability and poor consistency of the selector limit its practical application. The fabrication of a selector based on egg albumen (EA) is reported in this paper. The device exhibits excellent bidirectional threshold switching characteristics, including a low leakage current (10-7 A), a high ON/OFF current ratio (106 ), and good endurance (>700 days). It is used as a selector to form a 1S1R unit in combination with an EA-based RRAM to effectively solve the leakage current in a crossbar array. A feasible solution is provided for the realization of a protein-based 1S1R array to achieve high-density storage. The 1S1R unit shows characteristics similar to those of synapses in the human brain under impulse excitation and has great potential in simulating the human brain for neuromorphic calculations.).

qCTB7 positively regulates cold tolerance at booting stage in rice. TAG. THEORETICAL AND APPLIED GENETICS. THEORETISCHE UND ANGEWANDTE GENETIK 2023; 136:135. Abstract
KEY MESSAGE LOC_Os07g07690 on qCTB7 is associated with cold tolerance at the booting stage in rice, and analysis of transgenic plants demonstrated that qCTB7 influenced cold tolerance by altering the morphology and cytoarchitecture of anthers and pollen. Cold tolerance at the booting stage (CTB) in rice can significantly affect yield in high-latitude regions. Although several CTB genes have been isolated, their ability to induce cold tolerance is insufficient to ensure adequate rice yields in cold regions at high latitudes. Here, we identified the PHD-finger domain-containing protein gene qCTB7 using QTL-seq and linkage analysis through systematic measurement of CTB differences and the spike fertility of the Longjing31 and Longdao3 cultivars, resulting in the derivation of 1570 F2 progeny under cold stress. We then characterized the function of qCTB7 in rice. It was found that overexpression of qCTB7 promoted CTB and the same yield as Longdao3 under normal growing conditions while the phenotype of qctb7 knockout showed anther and pollen failure under cold stress. When subjected to cold stress, the germination of qctb7 pollen on the stigma was reduced, resulting in lower spike fertility. These findings indicate that qCTB7 regulates the appearance, morphology, and cytoarchitecture of the anthers and pollen. Three SNPs in the promoter region and coding region of qCTB7 were identified as recognition signals for CTB in rice and could assist breeding efforts to improve cold tolerance for rice production in high latitudes.

Abstract
Streptococcus suis is a major bacterial pathogen of swine and an emerging zoonotic agent that has to date resulted in substantial economic losses to the swine industry worldwide, and can cause persistent infection by forming biofilms. GrpE and histidine protein kinase ComD are important proteins implicated in the pathogenicity of S. suis, although whether they play roles in adhesion and biofilm formation has yet to be sufficiently clarified. In this study, we constructed grpE and comD deletion strains of S. suis by homologous recombination, and examined their cell adhesion and biofilm formation capacities compared with those of the wild-type strain. The pathogenicity of the grpE and comD deletion strains was evaluated using a mouse infection model, which revealed that compared with the wild-type, these deletion strains induced milder symptoms and lower bacteremia, as well as comparatively minor organ (brain, spleen, liver, and lung) lesions, in the infected mice. Moreover, the deletion of grpE and comD significantly reduced the pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α) induction capacity of S. suis. Collectively, the findings of this study indicate that the GrpE and ComD proteins of Streptococcus suis play key roles in the adherence to PK-15 cells and the formation of biofilms, thereby contributing to the virulence of this pathogen.

Abstract
Programmed cell death (PCD) is essential for wood development in trees. However, the determination of crucial factors involved in xylem PCD of wood development is still lacking. Here, two Populus trichocarpa typical aspartic protease (AP) genes, AP17 and AP45, modulate xylem maturation, especially fibre PCD, during wood formation. AP17 and AP45 were dominantly expressed in the fibres of secondary xylem, as suggested by GUS expression in APpro::GUS transgenic plants. Cas9/gRNA-induced AP17 or AP45 mutants delayed secondary xylem fibre PCD, and ap17ap45 double mutants showed more serious defects. Conversely, AP17 overexpression caused premature PCD in secondary xylem fibres, indicating a positive modulation in wood fibre PCD. Loss of AP17 and AP45 did not alter wood fibre wall thickness, whereas the ap17ap45 mutants showed a low lignin content in wood. However, AP17 overexpression led to a significant decrease in wood fibre wall thickness and lignin content, revealing the involvement in secondary cell wall synthesis during wood formation. In addition, the ap17ap45 mutant and AP17 overexpression plants resulted in a significant increase in saccharification yield in wood. Overall, AP17 and AP45 are crucial modulators in xylem maturation during wood development, providing potential candidate genes for engineering lignocellulosic wood for biofuel utilization.

Abstract
Diabetes can cause microvessel impairment. However, these conjunctival pathological changes are not easily recognized, limiting their potential as independent diagnostic indicators. Therefore, we designed a deep learning model to explore the relationship between conjunctival features and diabetes, and to advance automated identification of diabetes through conjunctival images. Images were collected from patients with type 2 diabetes and healthy volunteers. A hierarchical multi-tasking network model (HMT-Net) was developed using conjunctival images, and the model was systematically evaluated and compared with other algorithms. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the HMT-Net model to identify diabetes were 78.70%, 69.08%, and 75.15%, respectively. The performance of the HMT-Net model was significantly better than that of ophthalmologists. The model allowed sensitive and rapid discrimination by assessment of conjunctival images and can be potentially useful for identifying diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the rapid development of high-throughput sequencing technologies, many datasets on the same biological subject are generated. A meta-analysis is an approach that combines results from different studies on the same topic. The random-effects model in a meta-analysis enables the modeling of differences between studies by incorporating the between-study variance. RESULTS This paper proposes a moments estimator of the between-study variance that represents the across-study variation. A new random-effects method (DSLD2), which involves two-step estimation starting with the DSL estimate and the [Formula: see text] in the second step, is presented. The DSLD2 method is compared with 6 other meta-analysis methods based on effect sizes across 8 aspects under three hypothesis settings. The results show that DSLD2 is a suitable method for identifying differentially expressed genes under the first hypothesis. The DSLD2 method is also applied to Alzheimer's microarray datasets. The differentially expressed genes detected by the DSLD2 method are significantly enriched in neurological diseases. CONCLUSIONS The results from both simulationes and an application show that DSLD2 is a suitable method for detecting differentially expressed genes under the first hypothesis.
