Noise complaints, the COVID-19 pandemic, and compact developments: evidence from five American cities

The COVID-19 continues to take its toll on human life. Even though to a less threatening extent, and insignificant to some, noise turns out to be one of its consequences without consensus. While individuals experience multiple restrictions and restrain from exuberant activities by spending most of their time at home, reducing public transportation and personal vehicles, overall, they end up reduce anthropogenic noise pressure. On another level, people continue reporting noise concerns at various degrees during the COVID-19 pandemic. To draw a bigger picture as to whether or not these complaints have increased during the COVID-19 compared to the same period last year, this research examines them in five major American cities: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Dallas. Furthermore, the study also assessed the complaint patterns, whether reported in compact or sprawled areas. The findings highlight that either the noise complaints increased or decreased during the COVID-19 crisis. Accordingly, four of the five selected cities, except San Francisco, showed a decrease in reported noise. As it turns out, compact developments correlate significantly and positively with noise complaints in all study areas, except in Phoenix. These findings call for regulating and prioritizing noise-related policies. Planners and urban designers can thus advise to sustain environmental planning and public health issues, especially in planning compact developments.

Compactness regularization in the analysis of dipolar EPR spectroscopy data

Dipolar electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments, such as double electron-electron resonance (DEER), measure distributions of nanometer-scale distances between paramagnetic centers, which are valuable for structural characterization of proteins and other macromolecular systems. One challenge in the least-squares fitting analysis of dipolar EPR data is the separation of the inter-molecular contribution (background) and the intra-molecular contribution. For noisy experimental traces of insufficient length, this separation is not unique, leading to identifiability problems for the background model parameters and the long-distance region of the intra-molecular distance distribution. Here, we introduce a regularization approach that mitigates this by including an additional penalty term in the objective function that is proportional to the variance of the distance distribution and thereby penalizes non-compact distributions. We examine the reliability of this approach statistically on a large set of synthetic data and illustrate it with an experimental example. The results show that the introduction of compactness can improve identifiability.

Ovalbumin/carboxymethylcellulose colloids: Particle compactness and interfacial stability

A protein/polysaccharide colloidal particle was prepared via combined complex coacervation and heat-induction. When the ratio of ovalbumin (OVA) to carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was at 1:2, loose flexible particles (low D_f) with low surface hydrophobicity were obtained. Conversely, dense and compact particles (high D_f) were easily formed at a higher OVA/CMC ratio. Only in the appropriate OVA/CMC ratio, pH will have a greater impact on the colloidal particles. At the pH value of 4.4, the OVA/CMC ratio had a greater impact on the colloidal particles compared to pH. The emulsion stabilized by loose particles had a mean particle size of 3888 nm and was easily flocculated and creamed. On the other hand, compact particles formed a stable emulsion, which had a higher exponent of Δr² (0.867) and could resist flocculation during the 7 days storage. As such, the results showed that stable emulsion could be realized by utilizing compact particles as emulsifiers.

Characterization of the Effect of Sphingolipid Accumulation on Membrane Compactness, Dipole Potential, and Mobility of Membrane Components

Communication between cells and their environment is carried out through the plasma membrane including the action of most pharmaceutical drugs. Although such a communication typically involves specific binding of a messenger to a membrane receptor, the biophysical state of the lipid bilayer strongly influences the outcome of this interaction. Sphingolipids constitute an important part of the lipid membrane, and their mole fraction modifies the biophysical characteristics of the membrane. Here, we describe methods that can be used for measuring how sphingolipid accumulation alters the compactness, microviscosity, and dipole potential of the lipid bilayer and the mobility of membrane components.

An integrated linkage map of interspecific backcross 2 (BC2) populations reveals QTLs associated with fatty acid composition and vegetative parameters influencing compactness in oil palm

BACKGROUND

Molecular breeding has opened new avenues for crop improvement with the potential for faster progress. As oil palm is the major producer of vegetable oil in the world, its improvement, such as developing compact planting materials and altering its oils' fatty acid composition for wider application, is important.

RESULTS

This study sought to identify the QTLs associated with fatty acid composition and vegetative traits for compactness in the crop. It integrated two interspecific backcross two (BC₂) mapping populations to improve the genetic resolution and evaluate the consistency of the QTLs identified. A total 1963 markers (1814 SNPs and 149 SSRs) spanning a total map length of 1793 cM were integrated into a consensus map. For the first time, some QTLs associated with vegetative parameters and carotene content were identified in interspecific hybrids, apart from those associated with fatty acid composition. The analysis identified 8, 3 and 8 genomic loci significantly associated with fatty acids, carotene content and compactness, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Major genomic region influencing the traits for compactness and fatty acid composition was identified in the same chromosomal region in the two populations using two methods for QTL detection. Several significant loci influencing compactness, carotene content and FAC were common to both populations, while others were specific to particular genetic backgrounds. It is hoped that the QTLs identified will be useful tools for marker-assisted selection and accelerate the identification of desirable genotypes for breeding.

Effect of mesoscopic structure of citrus pectin on its emulsifying properties: Compactness is more important than size

We previously explored citrus oil emulsion stabilized by citrus pectin. In this report, we characterized key parameters of the citrus pectin mesoscopic structure and their effect on emulsifying capacity, and explored the underlying mechanism by determining the interfacial properties, emulsifying ability, and micromorphology. To generate different mesoscopic structure, citrus pectins were hydrolyzed or regulated by pH and NaCl. Hydrolysis decreased the size of citrus pectin mesoscopic structure with constant compactness, leading to superior interfacial properties but inferior emulsifying ability. In contrast, pH and NaCl regulation decreased the mesoscopic structure size and increased the compactness, and pH- and NaCl-regulated citrus pectin formed a compact absorbed layer at the interface to resist droplet coalescence/flocculation during homogenization. Our results support the importance of compactness of the citrus pectin mesoscopic structure on emulsifying capacity. This study increased our understanding on the relationship between the mesoscopic structures of polysaccharide emulsifier and emulsifying ability.

Towards sustainability? Analyzing changing urban form patterns in the United States, Europe, and China

Urban form characterizes the spatial structure of fixed elements within a city, which affects daily life and has significant influence on environmental sustainability. Measuring the spatiotemporal characteristics of an urban form and its relationship with sustainable development is the basis of urban planning. Taking 27 large cities in the United States, Europe and China as examples, we developed a ternary graph to quantify urban forms based on the density distribution of the built-up area. The urban forms were divided into the following classes: central-compact, central-sprawl, decentralized-compact, and decentralized-sprawl. Spatially, the cities in the three regions have experienced rapid urban growth, while the urban forms vary greatly from region to region. Urban forms are dominated by decentralized-sprawl in the United States, and central-compact in Europe and China. Temporally, approximately 80% of sample cities kept the urban form class both in 1990-2000 and 2000-2014. It is noted that 40% of sample cities in China tended to grow in a more sprawling pattern in 2000-2014 than in 1990-2000. From the land-saving aspect of urban sustainable development, compact and central spatial growth can significantly reduce per capita land consumption. Population density decreases in all sample cities, but compact and central spatial growth slowed the rate of population density reduction.

Creating functional groups of marine fish from categorical traits

Background

Functional groups serve two important functions in ecology: they allow for simplification of ecosystem models and can aid in understanding diversity. Despite their important applications, there has not been a universally accepted method of how to define them. A common approach is to cluster species on a set of traits, validated through visual confirmation of resulting groups based primarily on expert opinion. The goal of this research is to determine a suitable procedure for creating and evaluating functional groups that arise from clustering nominal traits.

Methods

To do so, we produced a species by trait matrix of 22 traits from 116 fish species from Tasman Bay and Golden Bay, New Zealand. Data collected from photographs and published literature were predominantly nominal, and a small number of continuous traits were discretized. Some data were missing, so the benefit of imputing data was assessed using four approaches on data with known missing values. Hierarchical clustering is utilised to search for underlying data structure in the data that may represent functional groups. Within this clustering paradigm there are a number of distance matrices and linkage methods available, several combinations of which we test. The resulting clusters are evaluated using internal metrics developed specifically for nominal clustering. This revealed the choice of number of clusters, distance matrix and linkage method greatly affected the overall within- and between- cluster variability. We visualise the clustering in two dimensions and the stability of clusters is assessed through bootstrapping.

Results

Missing data imputation showed up to 90% accuracy using polytomous imputation, so was used to impute the real missing data. A division of the species information into three functional groups was the most separated, compact and stable result. Increasing the number of clusters increased the inconsistency of group membership, and selection of the appropriate distance matrix and linkage method improved the fit.

Discussion

We show that the commonly used methodologies used for the creation of functional groups are fraught with subjectivity, ultimately causing significant variation in the composition of resulting groups. Depending on the research goal dictates the appropriate strategy for selecting number of groups, distance matrix and clustering algorithm combination.

On a product-type operator between Hardy and α-Bloch spaces of the upper half-plane

Recently we have introduced a product-type operator and studied it on some spaces of analytic functions on the unit disc. Here we start investigating the operator on the space of analytic functions on the upper half-plane. We characterize the boundedness and compactness of the operator between Hardy and α-Bloch spaces on the domain.

Preserving older adults' routine outdoor activities in contrasting neighborhood environments through a physical activity intervention

While neighborhood design can potentially influence routine outdoor physical activities (PA), little is known concerning its effects on such activities among older adults attempting to increase their PA levels. We evaluated the effects of living in neighborhoods differing in compactness on changes in routine outdoor activities (e.g., walking, gardening, yard work) among older adults at increased mobility disability risk participating in the LIFE-Pilot PA trial (2003-07; ages 70-89years; from Dallas, TX, San Francisco Bay area, Pittsburgh, PA, and Winston-Salem, NC). Analyses were conducted on the 400 LIFE-Pilot participants randomized to a one-year endurance-plus-strengthening PA intervention or health education control that completed one-year PA assessment (CHAMPS questionnaire). Outcomes of interest were exercise and leisure walking, walking for errands, and moderate-intensity gardening. Neighborhood compactness was assessed objectively using geographic information systems via a subsequent grant (2008-12). PA increased weekly exercise and leisure walking relative to control, irrespective of neighborhood compactness. However, walking for errands decreased significantly more in PA relative to control (net mean [SD] difference=16.2min/week [7.7], p=0.037), particularly among those living in less compact neighborhoods (net mean [SD] difference=29.8 [10.8] minutes/week, p=0.006). PA participants living in less compact neighborhoods maintained or increased participation in gardening and yard work to a greater extent than controls (net mean [SD] difference=29.3 [10.8] minutes/week, p=0.007). The results indicate that formal targeting of active transport as an adjunct to structured PA programs may be important to diminish potential compensatory responses in functionally impaired older adults. Structured endurance-plus-strengthening PA may help older adults maintain or increase such routine activities over time.

Aggregate formation affects ultrasonic disruption of microalgal cells

Ultrasonication is a cell disruption process of low energy efficiency. This study dosed K(+), Ca(2+) and Al(3+) to Chlorella vulgaris cultured in Bold's Basal Medium at 25°C and measured the degree of cell disruption under ultrasonication. Adding these metal ions yielded less negatively charged surfaces of cells, while with the latter two ions large and compact cell aggregates were formed. The degree of cell disruption followed: control=K(+)>Ca(2+)>Al(3+) samples. Surface charges of cells and microbubbles have minimal effects on the microbubble number in the proximity of the microalgal cells. Conversely, cell aggregates with large size and compact interior resist cell disruption under ultrasonication. Staining tests revealed high diffusional resistance of stains over the aggregate interior. Microbubbles may not be effective generated and collapsed inside the compact aggregates, hence leading to low cell disruption efficiencies. Effective coagulation/flocculation in cell harvesting may lead to adverse effect on subsequent cell disruption efficiency.

It turns out that it consists of positive integer eigenvalues, each of which is of infinite multiplicity. Spectral analysis of the [Formula: see text]-Neumann Laplacian on the Fock space is closely related to Schrödinger operators with magnetic fields and to the complex Witten Laplacian.
