Regulatory flexibility and school climate moderate the relationship between stress exposure and depression severity in school educators

School-related stress may impair the mental health and the ability of educators to function at school adaptively. According to the Conservation of Resources (COR) model, coping with stress is affected by internal personal resources and external interpersonal resources. The current study focused on regulatory flexibility as an internal personal resource and school climate as an external interpersonal resource. It tested their moderating role in the relationship between school-related stress exposure and depressive symptoms. 1530 educators participated in the study. The results revealed that school climate and regulatory flexibility play a significant role in determining the severity of depressive symptoms following stress exposure. Specifically, when either school climate and/or regulatory flexibility were low, there was a positive association between school-related stress exposure and depressive symptoms. Hence, greater exposure was associated with increased depressive symptoms. However, when both school climate and regulatory flexibility were higher, there were no associations between stress exposure and symptoms. Therefore, these educators showed significantly lower depressive symptoms independent of their stress exposure. The findings shed light on the importance of both internal and external resources in reducing the aversive effects of school-related stress. The study may pave the way to developing tailored interventions to reduce depressive symptoms and enhance well-being in educators.

Occupational well-being among health and social care educators: Structural equation modelling

This study tested whether empirical data about health and social care educators' occupational well-being would fit the proposed Content Model for the Promotion of the School Community Staff's Occupational Well-being. Descriptive, cross-sectional survey was conducted with 552 health and social care educators in 2020. Results confirmed that the four-aspect Content Model for the Promotion of School Community Staff's Occupational Well-being is suitable for promoting health and social care educators' occupational well-being, with some modifications. The results strengthen the view of occupational well-being as a wide-ranging phenomenon, the development of which should take into account four aspects of promoting occupational well-being.

Exploring environmental sustainability in dentistry among students and educators in the United Arab Emirates: a cross-sectional survey

OBJECTIVES

Creating environmentally sustainable healthcare culture within the dental field requires embedding the content in the dental curriculum at the undergraduate level. This study aimed to explore the current awareness and drivers among dental students and educators regarding environmentally sustainable dentistry (ESD) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and identify barriers and enablers to embrace it.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey using online questionnaires was carried out in six undergraduate dental education institutes within the UAE. Data analysis included descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

In total 153 students and 53 educators participated in the survey. Most students and educators were not aware of any ESD content in their curricula. However, the majority of educators were familiar with the concept of ESD, while students were mostly unfamiliar or slightly familiar. Nonetheless, students largely agreed on its importance and their interest in learning it, as they viewed it relevant to their future practice. Educators agreed that the dental profession has a responsibility to be environmentally friendly and expressed their desire in introducing ESD content into the curricula. Several barriers were reported such as lack of knowledge, curricula space, educational resources, and time. Meanwhile, enablers included providing ESD capacity building, training and resources.

CONCLUSIONS

There was no explicit presence of ESD content in the dental curricula in the UAE. Despite the lack of adequate awareness on this topic among educators and more so among students, they both had positive views towards incorporating ESD into dental curricula. Overall, this study highlighted the importance of promoting ESD in dental programs.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

ESD is gradually becoming a critical aspect of modern oral healthcare system. It has been mandated in the dental curricula in several regions globally. Embedding ESD in the UAE dental curricula would have several benefits for the environment as well as the future of the dental profession in the region. The clinical significance includes, but not limited to, improved treatment outcomes; patients, students and staff health and well-being; reduced health risks, and cost savings.

Teachers and educators' experiences and perceptions of artificial-powered interventions for autism groups

BACKGROUND

Artificial intelligence-powered interventions have emerged as promising tools to support autistic individuals. However, more research must examine how teachers and educators perceive and experience these AI systems when implemented.

OBJECTIVES

The first objective was to investigate informants' perceptions and experiences of AI-empowered interventions for children with autism. Mainly, it explores the informants' perceived benefits and challenges of using AI-empowered interventions and their recommendations for avoiding the perceived challenges.

METHODOLOGY

A qualitative phenomenological approach was used. Twenty educators and parents with experience implementing AI interventions for autism were recruited through purposive sampling. Semi-structured and focus group interviews conducted, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis.

FINDINGS

The analysis identified four major themes: perceived benefits of AI interventions, implementation challenges, needed support, and recommendations for improvement. Benefits included increased engagement and personalized learning. Challenges included technology issues, training needs, and data privacy concerns.

CONCLUSIONS

AI-powered interventions show potential to improve autism support, but significant challenges must be addressed to ensure effective implementation from an educator's perspective. The benefits of personalized learning and student engagement demonstrate the potential value of these technologies. However, with adequate training, technical support, and measures to ensure data privacy, many educators will likely find integrating AI systems into their daily practices easier.

IMPLICATIONS

To realize the full benefits of AI for autism, developers must work closely with educators to understand their needs, optimize implementation, and build trust through transparent privacy policies and procedures. With proper support, AI interventions can transform how autistic individuals are educated by tailoring instruction to each student's unique profile and needs.

Moving Beyond the Near-Peer Teaching Model with the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Teaching Assistant Program

Medical students will become educators teaching peers, healthcare students, patients, and families. At Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, the "Teaching Assistants in Medical Education" program provides fourth-year medical students with the skills and experiences needed to prepare them as medical educators. The program goes beyond the near peer teaching model to support student development in curricular design, assessment, and communication skills through a Clinical Skills or Anatomy track. Investment in the development of medical students as future educators will yield immediate and long-term rewards.

Traveling the road toward academic promotion for faculty with a DNP degree

There is a widely recognized need for nursing faculty in the United States. To prepare a practice-ready workforce, schools of nursing are hiring faculty with Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preparation to ensure clinical expertise is embedded into curriculum by practice experts. However, nurses transitioning from clinical nursing to faculty positions require tailored support and guidance in navigating the academic environment. Preparation for academic promotion is essential to integration into an academic setting. Support in navigating the new environment is essential for building confidence, to lay a foundation for a successful transition, and ultimately retaining these qualified educators. This article provides strategies to support nursing faculty planning to embark on an academic career track and provides guidance on how to prepare these DNP-prepared faculty for career progression and future promotion along academic ranks. These strategies include school and institutional orientation, faculty development plans, mentorship, leadership development, and performance review processes.

Professional Identity Formation of Medical Science Educators: An Imperative for Academic Medicine

Medical schools increasingly seek the expertise of talented medical science faculty to engage in the educational mission of the school; yet, the professional identity of these individuals is in flux. As courses and departments have become more integrated and less discipline-based, faculty with doctorates in biomedical science disciplines who primarily teach may suffer a loss of connection to their discipline, either in the courses they are teaching or in their home departments. Recent reports suggest that most medical science educators transitioned from the laboratory to the classroom by happenstance-not the most ideal way to build this key segment of the faculty. This article addresses the importance of foundational sciences in medical training, highlights the unique contributions of science educators in medical schools, and makes a case for why the professional identity of medical science educators should be studied. An imperative for academic medicine is to understand the factors that underpin the professional identity formation of medical science educators and to invest in training and nurturing this group of faculty members that are vital to educating the next generation of health professionals.

To Advance AI Use in Education, Focus on Understanding Educators

A better understanding of educators' perspectives of emerging education technology, specifically tools that incorporate AI, is essential to unlock the full potential benefits of these innovations. While prior research has primarily emphasized technological advancements, it has overlooked the profound influence of social, psychological, and cultural factors in shaping educators' perceptions, trust, and adoption of educational technology. As increasingly powerful AI tools emerge, their design must be rooted in a deep understanding of educators' needs and perspectives. It is only with the acceptance and trust of educators that these innovative solutions can elevate learning outcomes, academic achievements, and educational equity.

Delivering concussion education to pre-service teachers through the SCHOOLFirst website: Evaluating usability and satisfaction

BACKGROUND

Return-to-school processes indicate 'when' to initiate activities and 'what' activities should be accomplished, but are missing 'how' to implement the process. The SCHOOLFirst website provides the 'how' through building concussion knowledge, creating a supportive culture and defining roles. Due to the involvement of pre-service teachers in schools during training and imminent transition to becoming teachers, it is important that pre-service teachers are trained in concussion and can optimally support current and future students.

OBJECTIVE

To determine: 1) pre-service teachers' knowledge and confidence surrounding the return-to-school process before and after using the SCHOOLFirst website; 2) the usability, intended use and satisfaction of the SCHOOLFirst website from the perspective of pre-service teachers.

METHODS

Thirty pre-service teachers completed the demographic survey, knowledge and confidence survey, System Usability Scale, and satisfaction and intended use survey after participating in a workshop.

RESULTS

Significant increases in concussion knowledge (Z = -4.093, p <  0.001) and confidence in helping students return-to-school (Z = -4.620, p <  0.001) were measured after using the SCHOOLFirst website. Participants were satisfied with the SCHOOLFirst website (93.4%) and intend to use it in the future when supporting a student post-concussion (96.4%).

CONCLUSION

The SCHOOLFirst website is a valuable tool for pre-service teachers to support students' return-to-school post-concussion.

Application of a Model of Workforce Resilience to the Education Workforce: Expanding Opportunities for Support

The current study analyzed 502 responses from members of the education workforce on the Resilience at Work (RAW) scale and other measures of health and job satisfaction as part of an initiative offering training and technical assistance to support student and staff well-being. A latent profile analysis using scores on components of the RAW identified three resilience profiles: lower, moderate, and higher capacities for resilience. Profiles were differentiated across components related to resilience capacity including alignment of work and personal values, level of social support, and ability to manage stress. Differences between profiles were observed across days of poor physical health, days of poor mental health, days of activity restriction, general health rating, and domains of burnout, compassion satisfaction, and secondary traumatic stress. These findings reinforce calls to support the education workforce through changes that allow access to meaningful work, an evaluation of demands including workload, relevant training on emotional wellness, positive experiences, connections with others, and stress management.

Strategies for recruiting, training, and retaining educators for adolescent pregnancy prevention programs: Insights from organization leaders and educators

This paper provides insights into how 17 community-based organizations (CBOs) recruited, trained, and retained educators in pregnancy prevention program implementations for underserved adolescents in different areas of the United States. The paper also highlights problems and potential solutions associated with these practices. The study adopted a qualitative descriptive framework. We conducted 41 interviews with leaders and educators of CBOs and conducted qualitative content analysis of the interview data integrating deductive and inductive coding approaches. We found that a commonly emphasized recruitment and selection challenge was finding qualified candidates for short-term project-based employment. Interviewees highlighted limitations of curriculum training in preparing novice educators for program implementation and shared their strategies to overcome these limitations. Post-onboarding professional development opportunities were available for long-term educators, but not for short-term project-based educators. Educators reported receiving sufficient support from their organizations and coworkers to perform their jobs and maintain their well-being. Although none of the educators desired to leave their roles, they shared potential reasons for turnover, such as project-based employment and a desire to explore different career paths. We align the study findings with best practices proposed in the adolescent health education and human resources literatures and present a set of recommendations. Researchers interested in adolescent pregnancy prevention program implementation and organizations that plan to implement programs can benefit from the findings and recommendations presented in this article.

Supporting children's mental health in primary schools: a qualitative exploration of educator perspectives

Schools are often seen as a key setting for the provision of mental health support for children. This study aimed to explore the professional perspectives of primary school educators in Victoria, Australia, regarding how schools can support the mental health of their students. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with 17 primary school educators, from four schools. Thematic analysis was used to generate themes from the data. This study indicates that educators report significant concerns about the complexities of their role and their capacity to support children's mental health due to a lack of resources, overwhelming demands, and inadequate training. Educators highlighted the importance of partnership and communication with families and of a school culture that prioritises mental health. This study provides insights into external factors that can undermine effective support of children's mental health within primary schools and indicates a need for a more integrated approach to supporting children's mental health across education and healthcare.

Experiencing racism within medical school curriculum: 2020 ICCH student symposium

OBJECTIVE

To explore student experiences relating to racism, microaggressions and implicit bias within healthcare communication and medical education in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement METHODS: Students and faculty from different racial/ethnic backgrounds, medical schools, countries, and levels of training shared their perspectives with a multi-disciplinary, international audience at the 2020 International Conference on Communication in Healthcare (ICCH).

RESULTS

We highlight experiences shared at the symposium and demonstrate how the student voice can help shape the medical school curriculum. 3 main themes are discussed: 1) Institutional bias and racism, 2) Racial discrimination during medical training and 3) Recommendations for curricula change.

CONCLUSION

Racism influences many aspects of student experiences and often appears in covert and institutional forms. These shared experiences reflect a common problem faced by ethnic minority medical students.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Student experiences provide thoughtful recommendations for educators regarding incorporating anti-racism teaching into their curricula. It is essential that this teaching is collaborative, non-tokenistic and implemented early in the syllabus. It is beneficial for educators to build on the various existing approaches demonstrated by other institutions.

Cultivating Skillful Means of Care in Schools Through Compassion Practice and Individual and Joint Inquiry

Objectives

We examined the extent to which compassion practices helped guide skillful means of care among educators. We engaged educators in a collaborative design (co-design) process that foregrounded two components: (1) contemplative practice and (2) developing skill in how social interactions are embedded within wider systems through individual and joint inquiry. We analyzed the ways educators developed awareness of social suffering and set intentions to alleviate suffering. We examined how co-design fostered an understanding of compassion and new ideas about how to respond skillfully to suffering in schools.

Methods

Using qualitative methods, we analyzed data from educators who participated in co-design, including their written reflections, field notes, semi-structured interviews, and surveys.

Results

Educators identified multiple opportunities for acting with compassion, including approaching school-based interactions with compassion, cultivating compassion for themselves, and envisioning school change through a lens of compassion. Educators' experiences in co-design directly informed how they imagined compassionate action in their schools. Specific elements highlighted were contemplative practice, reflection, and individual and joint inquiry.

Conclusions

The adaptation of a general program on compassion training can benefit from attending to how to show compassion in the context of concrete interactions in schools, and this can support educators in developing skillful means of care. Our analyses provide insight into the components that supported educators to offer compassion and suggest that educators' skillful means of care can be cultivated through both contemplative practice and inquiry into social suffering. We offer a conceptual model for developing skillful means of care educational settings.

Evaluating an ACT-Based Brief Intervention for Educators Treatment Package on Reported Well-Being and ACT-Consistent Language in the Classroom

Educators continue to experience stress and burnout, both of which have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and there continues to be a need to develop interventions that support not only educators’ well-being, but a climate within school buildings that fosters psychological well-being for students and school staff alike. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is one promising approach to interventions for both educator and student psychological well-being. The present study sought to evaluate the effect of a low-dosage, online, and remotely delivered ACT intervention for educators on self-reported burnout, psychological flexibility, ACT knowledge, and frequency of use of ACT-consistent language while teaching in an alternative educational setting. The ACT-based intervention targeted the development of educator psychological flexibility, but the analysis provided an evaluation of non-targeted participants’ use of ACT-consistent language in the classroom, as well. Results suggest an overall improvement in participants’ self-reported burnout and psychological flexibility, an increase in participants’ ACT knowledge following each phase of the study, and an increase in the frequency of ACT-consistent language for all participants following the onset of a feedback component. We discuss potential implications of practical ACT-based interventions for educators in an applied setting and related increases in ACT-consistent verbal stimuli within the classroom setting.

Early childhood educators' psychological distress and wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic

There is growing awareness of the impacts of COVID-19 on children, families, and more recently, early childhood educators. This study aimed to add to this research and explore Australian early childhood educators' psychological distress and wellbeing in relation to COVID-19. Accordingly, 205 educators (117 early childhood educators, 86 leaders and 2 others) completed the Impact of Event Scale-Revised, measuring levels of post-traumatic distress, and an open-ended question on wellbeing, both in relation to COVID-19. Educators' responses to the open-ended question were matched to those who scored high, medium, and low on the Impact of Events Scale-Revised. Results demonstrated 66.8% of educators scored in the low range for post-traumatic distress, 11.7% scored in the moderate range, and 21.5% scored in the high range for post-traumatic distress on the Impact of Events Scale-Revised. Participants scoring in the low range on the Impact of Events Scale-Revised provided fewer comments regarding the emotional impacts of COVID-19. There were no differences between the groups in terms of fear of COVID-19 infection, challenges related to increased workload during the pandemic, and frustration with the Australian government response to COVID-19. Educators and early childhood leaders reported comparable wellbeing challenges during the pandemic. This research has implications for the types of support provided to educators during future pandemics.

Feeding practices in Australian early childhood education and care settings

Objective:

Feeding practices used by educators in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings can influence the diet quality of young children. However, Australian data is scarce and limited to describing barriers to responsive feeding. This study describes the use of feeding practices amongst a group of Australian educators.

Design:

Direct observation of feeding practices and assessment of centre policy were conducted using the ‘Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation’ tool. Self-reported feeding practices and demographic data were collected via online survey using the Childcare Food and Activity Practices Questionnaire.

Setting:

Ten centre-based ECEC services in South East Queensland, Australia.

Participants:

Educators working in ECEC.

Results:

A total of 120 meals were observed and 88 educators provided self-report data (n 84 female). Centre policy supported the use of responsive feeding practices, and this was reflected in the high frequency with which children could decide what and how much to eat, across both observed and self-report data as well as low levels of pressure to eat and use of food as a reward (observed at 19·9 % and 0 % of meals). The only apparent discrepancy was regarding modelling. Median score for self-reported role-modelling was 5·0 (4·3–5·0) and educators were observed to sit with children at 75 % of meals, however observed occasions of enthusiastic role modelling was only 22 % (0–33·3) of meals.

Conclusions:

Research addressing how educators conceptualise feeding practices, as well under what circumstances they are used, particularly in centres with different models of food provision, may shed light on why modelling is rarely implemented in practice.

Educators' experiences with governance in curriculum change processes; a qualitative study using rich pictures

In the midst of continuous health professions curriculum reforms, critical questions arise about the extent to which conceptual ideas are actually put into practice. Curricula are often not implemented as intended. An under-explored aspect that might play a role is governance. In light of major curriculum changes, we explored educators' perspectives of the role of governance in the process of translating curriculum goals and concepts into institutionalized curriculum change at micro-level (teacher-student). In three Dutch medical schools, 19 educators with a dual role (teacher and coordinator) were interviewed between March and May 2018, using the rich pictures method. We employed qualitative content analysis with inductive coding. Data collection occurred concurrently with data analysis. Different governance processes were mentioned, each with its own effects on the curriculum and organizational responses. In Institute 1, participants described an unclear governance structure, resulting in implementation chaos in which an abstract educational concept could not be fully realized. In Institute 2, participants described a top-down and strict governance structure contributing to relatively successful implementation of the educational concept. However it also led to demotivation of educators, who started rebelling to recover their perceived loss of freedom. In Institute 3, participants described a relatively fragmentized process granting a lot of freedom, which contributed to contentment and motivation but did not fully produce the intended changes. Our paper empirically illustrates the importance of governance in curriculum change. To advance curriculum change processes and improve their desired outcomes it seems important to define and explicate both hard and soft governance processes.

Sources of Stress and Coping Strategies Among Undergraduate Nursing Students Across All Years

Background

Undergraduate nursing students experience high levels of stress during their programs. The literature on their stress is extensive, however, what is less well-known are the specific sources of stresses for students in different years of study.

Purpose

The aim of this study is to understand nursing students’ sources of stress and coping strategies in each year of study.

Method

A transversal descriptive qualitative study was used. A sample of 26 undergraduate students attending a university in Montreal, Canada were recruited and participated in a semi-structured interview. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis.

Results

The sources of stress differed according to year of study and related significantly to the specific novelty of that year. For first-year students, their stress was related to their academic courses. High clinical performance expectations and a lack of time for their personal lives was a main source of stress for second-year students. The prospect of graduating and transitioning into the work environment caused stress for students in their final year. Students across all years of study utilized similar coping strategies.

Conclusion

The findings suggest that interventions can be developed to address the sources of stress experienced by nursing students in each year of study.

Early Childhood Educators' Perceptions of Their Emotional State, Relationships with Parents, Challenges, and Opportunities During the Early Stage of the Pandemic

This article presents a study about the impact of COVID-19 on childcare center educators in Quebec (Canada). Regulated childcare services were closed due to the pandemic between March 16 and May 31, 2020, in areas considered "hot" (highly affected by the pandemic). During this time, some centers were transformed into "emergency childcare services" available to parents considered to be essential workers. Therefore, few children attended, and most educators worked remotely. In May 2020, 372 educators completed an online questionnaire regarding their emotional state, challenges, and learning opportunities. Results indicate that half of the respondents reported a decrease in their level of well-being at work and an increase in their stress level. Educators working remotely were more likely to report a lower level of stress than when working with children at daycare (36.1% vs 19.7%). Despite these findings, educators estimated that the parents who used their emergency childcare service presented either high (37.7%) or average (32.2%) levels of wellbeing. The factors that educators identified as facilitating their interactions with families included parental recognition of their work (11.68%) and direct contact with them (12.62%). While many tasks accomplished at home were done for the first time during this period (i.e., creating video capsules for children and parents, virtual meetings with children and colleagues), a large majority of respondents reported that these tasks made them feel useful. Working at their own pace (34.7%) was seen as the principal advantage of remote working. Finally, 28.84% mentioned that the reduced ratio (1:2 or 1:3) was a facilitating factor that they would like to maintain during the upcoming reopening phase. The discussion uses the Job Demands and Resources theoretical framework (Bakker and Demerouti in Wellbeing 3(2):1-28, 2014; Dicke et al. in J Occupat Health Psychol 23(2): 262-277, 2017) to explain the educators' work-related demands and emotional state in both remote and CPE working pandemic contexts. In conclusion, we argued that this pandemic reveals the complexity, but also the essential nature of the work of early childhood educators, in particular by identifying their needs for support and recognition essential to their professional commitment.

Optometry students' perspective on optometry in suburban Western India: A qualitative study

PURPOSE

Optometry has been an established profession in India for 60 years. Despite this, students who choose this course may have misconceptions and unrealistic expectations about the profession. The goal of this study is to understand the perceptions about optometry among optometry students, prior to and during their studies.

METHODS

A snap-shot narrative qualitative study using a semi-structured open-ended questionnaire was designed to understand the perception of optometry. Optometry students and educators from three suburban colleges were invited to participate. Forty-one participants took part in 24 in-depth interviews and 5 focus groups; of those 32 were undergraduate optometry students and 9 were optometry educators. Interviews and focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed, coded, and analyzed.

RESULTS

Three major themes emerged: retrospective perception of optometry, current perception and strategies to improve awareness level. All the participants mentioned that there was a considerable lack of awareness about optometry in society. None of the students stated that they chose optometry as their first choice of professional education. Most students expressed that they were provided with ample exposure during the curriculum to understand the scope of optometry. Various strategies were recommended to improve the level of awareness of optometry.

CONCLUSIONS

The current study highlights the lack of awareness and knowledge of optometry among the students while enrolling in the course. Knowledge about the scope of optometry practice among optometry students improved after extensive education and clinical exposure. Improving the awareness level of the profession will improve the quality of students entering the profession.

Sexual health attitudes and beliefs among nursing faculty: A correlational study

BACKGROUND

Sexual health is an integral part of nursing care across the life span. Nurses internal and external factors influenced their knowledge, experiences, and competencies. These impact nursing education and professional practice. There was no known research regarding the nursing faculty's sexual health attitudes and beliefs and the relationship with predictive factors.

OBJECTIVES

The purpose aims to identify any statistical relationships between nursing faculty age, nursing educational level, nursing specialty, years of work, and years of teaching in nursing to predict their sexual health attitudes and beliefs.

DESIGN

This is nonexperimental and quantitative research of predictive correlational design with multiple linear regression statistical analyses.

SETTINGS

Data gathered from nursing faculty across the United States.

PARTICIPANTS

Nursing faculty teaching at the baccalaureate, master, and or advanced practice nursing programs.

METHODS

Online survey of sexuality attitudes and beliefs (SABS).

RESULTS

A convenience sample of 371 nursing faculty. The results showed a statistically significant and a moderate correlation (R = 0.35, R² = 0.12, F(9, 361) = 5.68, p < 0.01) of their sexual health attitudes and beliefs and the predictors. This indicated nursing faculty with a doctorate, women's health specialty, and increased years for age, nursing practice, and teaching showed lower SABS scores or barriers to addressing sexual health. The social cognitive theory and Benner's novice to expert model explained the relationship between predictors and sexual health attitudes and beliefs.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings of this study showed personal, educational, and professional factors as predictors affecting positively or negatively the faculty's sexual health attitudes and beliefs. Awareness of those findings should promote changes in nursing education, decrease sexual health barriers, and prepare faculty, students, and nurses to provide sexual health care across the life span.

Pre-eminence of determining factors in second language learning: An educator's perspective from Spain

Second language acquisition as a process is subject to factors related to the student, the teacher, the learning structure and learning organisation, and also to the learning environment. The research hereby presented aims to establish the relevance of the above-mentioned factors in the process of second language learning. The study addresses the point of view of teachers, as their perspective concerning the learning process is privileged. If it were not to be included in a scientific process, this detailed and contextual knowledge would not be able to contribute to the improvement of teaching. The data obtained will allow for the designing of teaching strategies focused on learners' needs and requirements. This is a descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study with the participation of 216 practicing teachers within the Community of Madrid in Spain. The information was collected through an online questionnaire using the Google Drive tool Google Forms. Then, it was analysed and validated with IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0. The outcomes of the study show that the factors linked to the teacher are the most dominant for those educators in the Community of Madrid. Regarding the teacher-student relationship, the use of teaching resources and materials adequate for learning, together with the communication, strategies used, the linguistic input received by the students and the planning of lessons, are factors showing the greatest capacity to determine the process of teaching and learning a second language.

The relationship between educators' and children's physical activity and sedentary behaviour in early childhood education and care

OBJECTIVES

The early childhood education and care (ECEC) environment has a significant role to play in the promotion of physical activity and reduction of sedentary behaviour in young children. Educators may be an important social factor influencing children's physical activity and sedentary behaviour, however limited evidence exists on this relationship. The primary aim was to examine the relationships between educators' and children's physical activity and sedentary behaviours within ECEC settings.

DESIGN

A cross sectional study.

METHODS

The study involved 11 ECEC centres from NSW, Australia (n=110 educators; n=490 children). Data for each centre were collected over five consecutive days. Objectively measured physical activity and sedentary behaviour were collected from children using Actigraph accelerometers and were analysed using STATA 13c. Linear regression was used to examine relationships between children and educators, adjusted for centre clustering.

RESULTS

A significant association was reported between educators' sedentary behaviour and children's sedentary behaviour (p=0.047). Educators spent 61% of their work day in sedentary behaviour. No significant associations were reported between educators' physical activity and children's physical activity, for any intensity of physical activity.

CONCLUSIONS

The positive relationship between educators' sedentary behaviours and children's sedentary behaviour in this study highlights a novel area to target in future interventions. Improving physical activity and sedentary behaviours of educators will likely improve children's physical activity levels and thus health and wellbeing outcomes.

Experiences of educators who identify as lesbian, gay, and bisexual

The focus of the phenomenological qualitative study was on the lived experiences of U.S. educators who identified as lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB). Life story data regarding stress, coping, and identity were gathered, triangulated, and analyzed from 24 U.S. educators who identified as LGB teachers, mentors, and coaches. Four themes resulted: (a) subscribing to a helping identity, (b) being effective as an educator, (c) experiencing different levels of support, and (d) being out about sexual orientation to different degrees. Recommendations for future research are provided.

The Impact of Racial Bias in Patient Care and Medical Education: Let's Focus on the Educator

INTRODUCTION

Racial bias in health care is well documented. Research shows the presence of racial bias among health care providers. There is a paucity of workshops focused on racial bias effects in health professions educators.

METHOD

Two to three workshops were delivered to a diverse group of clinical educators from three programs at a major academic institution. Each workshop included a brief multimedia presentation followed by a facilitated group discussion. Participants completed the online Implicit Association Test (IAT), a baseline demographic questionnaire, and a brief post-then-pre questionnaire.

RESULTS

Twenty-four faculty participated in the study (six physicians, eight nurse practitioners, 10 physician assistants). Nineteen (90%) were women, 18 (86%) were White, nine (43%) had more than 10 years of experience as educators, and seven (35%) had previously participated in a biases program. Seventeen completed the IAT. Sixteen educators agreed or strongly agreed that bias has a significant impact on patients' outcomes at the end of the workshop compared to 17 before the workshop. Seventeen educators agreed or strongly agreed that recognizing their own racial bias would positively alter their teaching practice after the workshop compared to 15 before the workshop.

DISCUSSION

This series of workshops was created to fill a gap regarding the impact of racial bias on patient outcomes, health disparities, and health professions education. The impact of racial bias in health professions education and the long-term impact of awareness and knowledge of racial bias in education are areas needing further evaluation.

"Doing What I can, but I got no Magic Wand:" A Snapshot of Early Childhood Educator Experiences and Efforts to Ensure Quality During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted early childhood programs serving infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in dramatic ways. After temporarily closing, many educators quickly adapted their procedures to ensure children's safety as they reopened to provide childcare for essential workers and then the community at large. This manuscript reports on statewide efforts to continue quality improvement initiatives for early childhood programs amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. We first describe the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic for over 2000 educators-teachers, administrators, and specialists-who completed surveys in the Spring and Fall of 2020. These survey data come from a statewide system called the Texas Early Childhood Professional Development System (TECPDS), designed to track the professional development needs/progress of early childhood educators. Second, we describe an example of how a statewide professional development and quality improvement program shifted to remote delivery during the pandemic. As an increasing number of educators turn to virtual training resources, we explain lessons learned from these response efforts and how they can inform future virtual professional development efforts, even amidst crisis, to ensure that a focus on quality improvement continues while supporting teachers' individual needs.

A 3-Day residential yoga-based program improves education professionals' psychological and occupational health in a single arm trial

OBJECTIVE

This study examined changes in psychological and occupational health in urban education professionals after attending a brief yoga-based program.

METHODS

Education professionals from the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) who were attending a residential 3-day yoga-based program at Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health were recruited to participate in the study. Measures of psychological and occupational health and health-related behaviors were completed before (baseline), after (post), and two months after the program (follow-up). Paired samples t-tests were used to compare scores between time points.

RESULTS

At post, participants (N = 74) showed improvements in stress, resilience, affect, mindfulness, empowerment, self-compassion, satisfaction with life, work engagement, burnout, exercise, and vegetable intake (all p values < 0.05) compared to baseline. At the follow-up (N = 33), showed improvements in resilience, affect, mindfulness, empowerment, self-compassion, work engagement, and burnout (all p values < 0.05) compared to baseline. There were significant correlations between the degree of home practice of the skills and techniques learned in the program and improvements in multiple measures of psychological and occupational health at follow-up (all p values < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that the yoga-based program improves psychological and occupational health and healthy behaviors in education professionals immediately following the program and up to two-months following the program, however, more data with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm sustained benefits over the longer term.

Exploring the needs and experiences of educators in facilitating use of the Bass Model of Holistic Reflection

Health professionals are required to reflect on practice to evaluate and improve care in rapidly changing health care environments. This study explored the professional development needs of educators facilitating development of reflective capacity in midwifery students using the Bass Model of Holistic Reflection. Thirteen midwifery academics at two Australian universities took part in the study conducted in three phases. Phase 1 identified the learning needs of educators described as 'understanding the building blocks of reflection'; 'practical application of the model, and 'assessment of reflective capacity'. Phase 2 involved an Intervention including development of a reflective practice tool kit and delivery of a two-day workshop. Phase 3 evaluated the experience of educators using the resources and four themes emerged: 1) 'Educators value a reflective practice toolkit'; 2) 'A toolkit builds confidence and trust in the model through promotion of deep personal reflection'; 3) 'Effective use of the model is key to achieving consistency in application by educators; and 4) 'Deeper understanding of the model promotes transformation of practice'. This paper confirms the importance of developing resources for educators, that support reflective pedagogy when implementing models of reflection into curricula.

Adaptation, acceptability and feasibility of a Short Food Survey to assess the dietary intake of children during attendance at childcare

Objective:

To (i) describe the adaptation of the Short Food Survey (SFS) for assessing the dietary intake of children (2–5 years) during attendance at Early Childhood Education and Care (SFS-ECEC); (ii) determine the acceptability and feasibility of the SFS-ECEC; and (iii) compare the SFS-ECEC to direct observations for assessing dietary intake of children in care.

Design:

The adapted forty-seven-item SFS-ECEC was completed by childcare educators to capture individual child’s usual intake over the past month. Acceptability and feasibility were assessed via educator self-report and completion rates. Mean servings of food groups consumed in accordance with dietary guidelines reported in the SFS-ECEC were compared to those obtained by a single-day direct observation via visual estimation conducted by trained personnel. Mean differences, intra-class correlations, Bland–Altman plots, percentage agreement and Cohen’s κ were examined.

Results:

213 (98·61 %) SFS-ECECs were returned. Acceptability was high with 86·54 % of educators reporting the tool as easy to understand. Mean differences in servings of food groups between the SFS-ECEC and direct observation were statistically significantly different for five out of six foods and ranged 0·08–1·07, with intra-class correlations ranging 0·00–0·21. Agreement between the methods in the classification of children meeting or not meeting dietary guidelines ranged 42·78–93·01 %, with Cohen’s κ ranging −0·03 to 0·14.

Conclusions:

The SFS-ECEC is acceptable and feasible for completion by childcare educators. While tool refinement and further validation is warranted, small mean differences suggest the tool may be useful in estimating group-level intakes.

Integration of Basic and Clinical Sciences: Student Perceptions

The integrated curriculum is becoming a popular concept among dental schools. The purpose of this study was to query dental students at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston - School of Dentistry (UTSD) to elucidate their level of interest in the integrated curriculum, perception of how much integration is currently occurring, and identify challenges to integration. To address this question, dental students at UTSD were invited to participate in a survey. Participants reported their perspectives on integration of sciences. All survey participants agreed that it is beneficial to integrate clinical and basic sciences and that basic science educators were incorporating clinical relevance in their regular teaching. The third and fourth year classes, classes that had been exposed to general as well as all specialty dentistry clinics, agreed that basic sciences are being incorporated into most clinical teaching. Top two barriers to integration identified by the students were lack of crossover knowledge of faculty, and insufficient time to explore connections between basic sciences and clinical sciences because of the volume of information that needs to be covered. In conclusion, student perception at UTSD is that overall basic and clinical sciences are being integrated throughout the curriculum.

Preparedness for advancing future health: a national qualitative exploration of dietetics graduates' experiences

Effective health workforce preparation is critical to the health of those who stand to benefit from its services. Emerging dietitians can provide important insights on an evolving workforce that is well-placed to advance future global health. This study aimed to explore a national sample of dietetics graduates' experiences of, and challenges faced in, dietetics workforce preparation and preparedness in Australia. An interpretive description methodology guided this study whereby researchers interpreted the meanings that participants attributed to their experiences. Twenty dietitians (graduated within the last 2 years) were purposively sampled from across Australia and detailed insights were obtained through semi-structured interviews. A multi-analyst approach employing thematic and template analysis, enabled five themes to be identified across the data set. These included: (1) being held back; (2) chasing the prize; (3) valuing real learning; (4) easing the transition; and (5) encountering influencers. While graduates appreciated their preparation, they were not empowered or equipped to embrace opportunities in diverse and emerging areas of dietetics practice. Graduates were challenged by the competitive landscape of securing obvious job opportunities and by a lack of support in transitioning into the workforce. Practice exposures and encounters with influential dietitians were highly valued. Research on role-emerging dietetics placements along with enhanced support mechanisms for novice dietitians is urgently required to ensure appropriate alignment between future dietetics preparation and practice. Obtaining insights into health professional graduates' experiences of their education can be used to ensure that emerging health workforces are relevant and responsive to future market needs.

Building the skills and confidence of early childhood educators to work with parents: study protocol for the Partnering with Parents cluster randomised controlled trial

Background

In the early years of life, the benefits of parental engagement in children’s learning are well documented. Early childhood educators are a potentially effective source of support, having opportunity to engage with parents on key issues related to children’s learning and development. Educators report a need for more practical strategies for building positive partnerships with the parents of children in their care. To address this need, we have developed a practice support system, Partnering with Parents, to guide educators in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) through practical strategies for working with parents. Partnering with Parents is designed to be embedded in everyday service delivery.

Methods

Using a cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT) with intervention and wait-list control groups, we aim to evaluate the effectiveness of the Partnering with Parents practice support system under normal service conditions. The intervention is being trialled in ECEC services across Victoria, Australia. Services in the intervention group implemented the 10-week intervention before the control group commenced the intervention. Educators and parents of children attending the participating services are taking part in evaluating the intervention by completing questionnaires online at three time points (before, immediately after, and 3 months after the intervention group received the intervention).

Results

One hundred eighteen educators and 302 parents recruited from 19 participating ECEC services have consented to take part in the trial.

Conclusions

There is considerable potential for ECEC services to improve everyday interactions with parents and potentially child outcomes, by implementing this practice support model. Future research in this field can examine long-term effects of improving the parent-educator relationship. The intervention has potential to be widely embedded in educator training or professional development.

Trauma-Informed School Programing: Applications for Mental Health Professionals and Educator Partnerships

An alarming number of children experience significant trauma or chronic stress throughout childhood, manifesting in cognitive, social, physical, and emotional impairment. These challenges are expressed in the P-12 academic setting through difficulties with behavioral and emotional self-regulation, academic functioning, and physical ailments and illness. Advances in trauma-informed care, as applied to the school environment, have inspired new hope for educators who observe first-hand the learning challenges facing traumatized children. This article defines the nature of the problem along with a guiding framework to assist educators and mental health professionals in transforming to a trauma-informed school culture.

An educator-administered measure of language development in young children

An increasing number of infants and toddlers in many countries are enrolled in early childhood education (ECE) programs, and educators thus play a central role in stimulating language development in these young children. A valid, brief educator-completed measure of language development in young children has important uses both for the identification and monitoring of language development and for the guidance and evaluation of intentional instruction and targeted interventions for children who need it. We present such a measure here for Danish, the CDI: Educator (CDI-Edu) version, which is based on well-developed and validated parent report measures, adapted for the early childhood education setting. It requires approximately 10 min per child on the part of the educator. It includes a 70-item vocabulary checklist, as well as questions concerning the child's use of decontextualized language with respect to objects and actions distant from the here and now. The test has been standardized on a total of 5097 children aged 18-34 months. Test-retest and internal consistency measures demonstrate reliability. Validation is established through correlations with age, maternal education, the Danish One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test, and the Social Emotional Assessment Measure.

Male adolescents' role in pregnancy prevention and unintended pregnancy in rural Victoria: health care Professional's and educators' perspectives

BACKGROUND

While there has been a steady decline in adolescent pregnancies worldwide and in Australia over the last three decades, Australian rates still rank third highest among developed countries. Adolescent pregnancies are defined as those that occur to girls between the ages of 15 and 19. The current pregnancy rate of 15 to 19 year old females rural Victoria is 21.19%, this is more than double the Victorian state rate of 8.2% and almost double the national Australian rate at 13.1% The aim of this study was to explore Health Care Professionals and Educator perspectives on these high adolescent pregnancy rates, with particular focus on the role of adolescent males, in a rural region in Victoria, Australia.

METHODS

A qualitative descriptive study using focus group discussion was undertaken with Health Care Providers and Educators (N = 8) in 2016. Data was analysed using thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Four themes emerged from analysis. The first, 'Gender Stereotyping' focused on the acceptance of traditional masculinities; the second 'Adolescent males as health consumers' was based on the consensus that adolescent males are poor consumers of health and 'invisible'; the third 'Complexity of Issues' identified that, particularly in a rural region, contributing issues are varied and complex; and the fourth 'Focus on Fatherhood', saw the participants diverge from the discussion about pregnancy prevention and the adolescent males' role in unintended pregnancy, and focus on the role adolescent males may have as unintended fathers.

CONCLUSIONS

Participants did not consider young males to be of importance in the prevention of adolescent pregnancy. There is a need to further explore the role of young males in pregnancy prevention, including what role traditional gender stereotyping, from health professionals' and young males' perspectives, plays in provision of adolescent sexual health services.

Assessing an isiZulu questionnaire with educators in primary schools in Pietermaritzburg to establish a baseline of knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Background

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a significant childhood disorder and has a growing prevalence rate across the world. It has been identified in children from a wide range of racial groups, ethnicities and socio-economic groups, making it a globally relevant disorder. However, a lack of research on ASD in Africa makes it difficult to determine the prevalence rate, presentation and level of knowledge regarding the disorder locally. Therefore, assessing knowledge of ASD amongst professionals is a useful starting point for research in countries where research on ASD is limited. Educators in particular are a vital resource due to the likelihood of their early identification of developmental delays in children of school going age. Awareness studies reveal that professionals have poor awareness of ASD and therefore what educators in South Africa know about ASD needs to be established.

Methods

This study translated the Knowledge about Childhood Autism among Health Workers (KCAHW) questionnaire that was originally designed by Bakare and colleagues (Clinical Practice and Epidemiology in Mental Health 4:17, 2008). The isiZulu KCAHW questionnaire was then used to investigate the level of knowledge of ASD amongst educators in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Fifty (50) educators consented to complete the questionnaire and the data was analysed using the statistical programme SPSS.

Results

The results suggested that educators have an adequate baseline knowledge of ASD but their knowledge was found to be lacking in specific detail. The mean total score for the educator sample was 13.08 (out of a possible 19) which suggested that educators in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg knew 68% of the symptoms covered in the questionnaire.

Conclusions

The isiZulu KCAHW questionnaire appears to be a useful measure for use in the South African context. It provided significant information regarding educator knowledge of ASD in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg. However, the analysis also showed that whilst the educators had an adequate general knowledge of ASD, they lacked specific insight into the disorder, particularly with regards to etiology and age of onset. Furthermore, the results showed that there is an opportunity for further research and interventions to develop knowledge of ASD within the local context in South Africa.

Overburden, Stigma, and Perceived Agency: Teachers as HIV Prevention Educators in Urban Zambia

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to more than 70% of the global HIV-positive population. In Zambia, as well as in other parts of Africa, deaths from AIDS and associated infections have created a generation of households headed by children, a situation that negatively affects the chances for economic and health improvements in the region. In contemplating possible public health interventions around HIV prevention, we found that a growing body of research advocates for school-based HIV programs as an effective strategy to stop the spread of the disease. This work is critical because it explores schoolteachers' perspectives on their potential roles as HIV prevention educators. Semi-structured interviews (n = 12) were conducted among schoolteachers in the Lusaka province of Zambia to collect qualitative data. Analysis of qualitative data revealed three broad and interconnected themes related to the roles and concerns of the participating teachers: 1) the role of overburden; 2) fear of stigma; and 3) perceived lack of agency. These themes are further discussed in the context of the results that focused on the teachers and the adoption of HIV education. Little is known about teachers' perceptions of themselves as HIV educators. Our study suggests that understanding teachers' perceptions and the contextual factors is crucial to the adoption of school-based HIV programs.

The effectiveness of peer mentoring in promoting a positive transition to higher education for first-year undergraduate students: a mixed methods systematic review protocol

BACKGROUND

The global transfer of nursing and midwifery education to higher education institutes has led to student nurses and midwives experiencing challenges previously faced by traditional third-level students, including isolation, loneliness, financial difficulties and academic pressure. These challenges can contribute to increased stress and anxiety levels which may be detrimental to the successful transition to higher education, thus leading to an increase in attrition rates. Peer mentoring as an intervention has been suggested to be effective in supporting students in the transition to third-level education through enhancing a sense of belongingness and improving student satisfaction, engagement and retention rates. This proposed systematic review aims to determine the effectiveness of peer mentoring in enhancing levels of student engagement, sense of belonging and overall satisfaction of first-year undergraduate students following transition into higher education.

METHODS

MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge, ProQuest, Embase, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO and CENTRAL databases will be searched for qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies on the implementation of peer assessment strategies in higher education institutes (HEIs) or universities for full-time, first-year adult students (>17 years). Included studies will be limited to the English language. The quality of included studies will be assessed using a validated Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). The findings will be presented as a narrative synthesis or meta-analysis as appropriate following sequential explanatory synthesis.

DISCUSSION

The review will provide clear, non-biased evidence-based guidance to all third-level educators on the effectiveness of peer-mentoring programmes for first-year undergraduates. The review is necessary to help establish which type of peer mentoring is most effective. The evidence from qualitative and quantitative studies drawn from the international literature will be utilised to illustrate the best way to implement and evaluate peer mentoring as an effective intervention and will be useful in guiding future research and practice in this area. These findings may be applied internationally across all disciplines.

In memoriam: A tribute to the work and lives of Ron Selvester and Rory Childers

At the April, 2015 International Society for Computerized Electrocardiology (ISCE) Annual Conference in San Jose, CA, a special session entitled Remembering Ron & Rory was held to pay tribute to the extraordinary work and lives of two experts in electrocardiology. The session was well attended by conference attendees, Childers' family members and friends, and additional colleagues who traveled to San Jose solely to participate in this session. The purpose of the present paper is to document the spirit of this special session as faithfully as possible using the words of the session speakers.

Construct development, description and initial validation of the Knowledge about Older Patients Quiz (KOP-Q) for nurses

BACKGROUND

Literature shows that nurses have a negative attitude toward older patients. Increasing nurses' knowledge (part of attitudes) may affect hospital nurses' attitudes and improve the quality of care for older patients. A first step is understanding nurses' current knowledge. This can be achieved by using a measurement instrument with good validity and reliability.

OBJECTIVES

This study explains the content development and initial validation of the 'Knowledge about Older Patients Quiz' (KOP-Q) for nurses, describing the first step in developing a valid and reliable instrument.

DESIGN

Qualitative method followed by 2 pilot studies.

METHODS

Open interviews were conducted with 7 scientific experts and 10 nurse specialists in gerontology, geriatrics, and/or nursing and 5 older patients, 70+ with hospital experience in the last two years. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Items were generated from literature on themes derived from interviews. A Delphi round with three nurse specialists and two researchers was organized for item reduction. Two pilot survey studies were conducted for measuring readability and face validity of the KOP-Q. Readability was examined by a Dutch language specialist and 7 nurses working on a cardiovascular ward. Face validity was tested in two hospitals with 22 nurses working on geriatric wards.

RESULTS

Identified themes were: normal aging, geriatric conditions, signaling problems in old age, interventions, family interventions, vulnerable patients versus older patients and internal motivation for learning and reflection. 185 questions on these themes were developed. After conceptualization, generation and reduction of questions in the Delphi round 52 questions remained eligible for use. Readability and face validity of this initial version of the KOP-Q proved good.

CONCLUSIONS

Content development of the KOP-Q is of good methodological rigor and each step is carefully described, therefore it can be of use for future diagnostic instrument developers, curriculum developers and educators.

Preventing secondary traumatic stress in educators

Teachers can be vulnerable to secondary traumatic stress (STS) because of their supportive role with students and potential exposure to students' experiences with traumas, violence, disasters, or crises. STS symptoms, similar to those found in posttraumatic stress disorder, include nightmares, avoidance, agitation, and withdrawal, and can result from secondary exposure to hearing about students' traumas. This article describes how STS presents, how teachers can be at risk, and how STS can manifest in schools. A US Department of Education training program is presented, and thoughts on future directions are discussed.

International training programs on eating disorders for professionals, caregivers, and the general public: A scoping review

This review identified and synthesized published training programs on eating disorders (ED) (anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa) for professionals, natural supporters of people with ED, or the public. A scoping review using the Arksey and O'Malley (2005) framework was conducted. Four data bases were searched, for all years, and manual searches from three additional sources were also conducted. Experts on ED were consulted for validation of the identified studies. A narrative synthesis was performed. A total of 20 evaluation studies from five countries were identified, and reviewed in relation to 14 ED training programs. Characteristics of the training programs, and study characteristics, were highly diverse, as shown on Table 1 which compiles results from the charted data. Evaluations were equally divided between training for healthcare and education professionals (9), and training for families or other carers of people with ED (10). One study evaluated ED training for the general public. We found that training orientation varies with the interests and needs of different trainee groups. While most studies assessed trainee outcomes, future research needs to give greater consideration to patient perspectives, and to the relationship between training and evaluation approaches, improved knowledge, and better care.
