Effect of charge transfer on the first hyper-polarizability of N,N-dimethylaniline and julolidine: a DFT based comparative study

CONTEXT

Quantum mechanical calculations involving electron correlation, frequency dispersion, and solvent effects were carried out to examine the second-order nonlinear optical response of various acceptor, X (-CF3, -CN, -NO2) substituted in N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) and julolidine(JLD). Here, both DMA and JLD acts as donor and the three substituted groups, X (-CF3, -CN and -NO2) at the para position of both the ring systems as acceptor. The NLO response (βHRS) of -CF3 and -CN substituted DMA and JLD is relatively lower compared to DMA-NO2 and JLD-NO2. The charge distribution is found higher in case of -NO2 substituted DMA and JLD (±443 and ±449) compared to their -CF3 or -CN substitution. Electronic characteristics such as UV-Vis absorption spectra, crucial excited state parameters and charge transfer contribution to βHRS have been used to explain the NLO parameter of DMA-X and JLD-X. Variation of the incident optical frequency of light shows fluctuation of βHRS value and highest values of βHRS are obtain at the λmax frequency of each compound. Solvent polarity variation study on βHRS shows that βHRS varies linearly with the Kirkwood-Onsagar dielectric factor (D).

METHODS

All computational studies have been carried out using density functional theory (DFT) based method. Since CAM-B3LYP based hybrid functional improves the asymptotic behavior of the exchange interaction by dividing into short-range and long-range components, first hyperpolarizability values in the present study were computed using DFT/ CAM-B3LYP/ 6-31G+(d,p) level of theory.

Theoretical study of the spectroscopic and nonlinear optical properties of trans- and cis-4-hydroxyazobenzene

We investigate the molecular structure, vibrational and electronic absorption spectra, and electronic hyperpolarizabilities of trans and cis isomers of 4-hydroxyazobenzene (HOAB) via density functional theory. Results show that the azo dye exhibits a high third-order nonlinear optical response and good optical transparency. Both the basis set and the functional are important influences on the results obtained when calculating the absorption spectrum and NLO response. We also study the effect of the solvent on the electronic absorption spectrum to assess the ability of the functional to reproduce the experimental spectrum in combination with a suitable solvent model. Our calculations show that the SMD model of Truhlar et al. handles the electrostatic and the non-electrostatic effects of hydrogen-bonding solvents on the absorption spectrum better than the traditional polarizable continuum model does. In addition, our results indicate that the dye trans-HOAB exhibits a high second hyperpolarizability and excellent optical transparency. Also, although the second hyperpolarizability of cis-HOAB is much lower than that of trans-HOAB, it is non-negligible when calculating the optical nonlinearity of HOAB under an optical pump. We also examine the effect of frequency dispersion on second harmonic generation. This study provides the basis for further research on the spectroscopic and nonlinear optical properties of novel azo dyes and other π-conjugated compounds.

Propagation of Love waves with surface effects in an electrically-shorted piezoelectric nanofilm on a half-space elastic substrate

The propagation of Love waves in the structure consisting of a nanosized piezoelectric film and a semi-infinite elastic substrate is investigated in the present paper with the consideration of surface effects. In our analysis, surface effects are taken into account in terms of the surface elasticity theory and the electrically-shorted conditions are adopted on the free surface of the piezoelectric film and the interface between the film and the substrate. This work focuses on the new features in the dispersion relations of different modes due to surface effects. It is found that with the existence of surface effects, the frequency dispersion of Love waves shows the distinct dependence on the thickness and the surface constants when the film thickness reduces to nanometers. In general, phase velocities of all dispersion modes increase with the decrease of the film thickness and the increase of the surface constants. However, surface effects play different functions in the frequency dispersions of different modes, especially for the first mode dispersion. Moreover, different forms of Love waves are observed in the first mode dispersion, depending on the presence of the surface effects on the surface and the interface.
