Furfural to Cyclopentanone - a Search for Putative Oligomeric By-products

We report here on the reductive rearrangement of biomass-derived furfural to cyclopentanone, a promising non-fossil feedstock for fuels and chemicals. An underreported aspect of this reaction is the inevitable formation of heavy byproducts. To mitigate its formation, process condition such as, solvent, catalyst, temperature, acidity, and feed concentration were varied to unravel the chemistry and improve the reaction performance. Water medium was confirmed to play a crucial role, as organic solvents were unable to deliver cyclopentanone or heavy by products. Copper-based catalyst showed the highest selectivity for ring-rearrangement, reaching 50 mol % under the conditions investigated. The main factor influencing the yields of cyclopentanone (CPO), and promote oligomer formation, are the feed concentration and the pH, as high feed concentrations and high acidity facilitate the self-polymerization of furfuryl alcohol (FALC). This was confirmed by dedicated experiments using FALC and the hydroxypentenone intermediate as feed. The concentration challenge could be mitigated by slowly dosing the feed, which increased the desired product yields by 4-12 mol %. Nevertheless, most oligomers appeared to fall in the range of common liquid fuels and could be converted to diesel by hydrodeoxygenation.

Orientated inhibition of humin formation in efficient production of levulinic acid from cellulose with high substrate loading: Synergistic role of additives

The main bottleneck in the direct conversion of cellulose to levulinic acid (LA), a promising bio-based platform chemical, lies in the severe formation of humins, especially at high substrate loading (>10 wt%). Herein, we report an efficient catalytic system consisting of a 2-methyltetrahydrofuran/water (MTHF/H₂O) biphasic solvent with NaCl and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as additives for converting cellulose (15 wt%) to LA in the presence of a benzenesulfonic acid catalyst. We show that both NaCl and CTAB accelerated the depolymerization of cellulose and formation of LA. However, NaCl favored the humin formation via degradative condensations, whereas CTAB inhibited humin formation by restraining the routes of both degradative and dehydrated condensations. A synergistic role of NaCl and CTAB on suppressing humin formations is illustrated. The combined use of NaCl and CTAB led to an increased LA yield (60.8 mol%) from microcrystalline cellulose in MTHF/H₂O (V_MTHF/V_H2O = 2/1) at 453 K for 2 h. Moreover, it was efficient for converting cellulose fractioned from several kinds of lignocellulosic biomass, wherein a high LA yield of 81.0 mol% was achieved from wheat straw cellulose. This work presents a new strategy for advancing LA biorefinery by synergistically promoting cellulose depolymerization with orientated inhibition of undesired humin formation.

Covalently bound humin-lignin hybrids as important novel substructures in organosolv spruce lignins

Organosolv lignins (OSLs) are important byproducts of the cellulose-centred biorefinery that need to be converted in high value-added products for economic viability. Yet, OSLs occasionally display characteristics that are unexpected looking at the lignin motifs present. Applying advanced NMR, GPC, and thermal analyses, isolated spruce lignins were analysed to correlate organosolv process severity to the structural details for delineating potential valorisations. Very mild conditions were found to not fractionate the biomass, causing a mix of sugars, lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs), and corresponding dehydration/degradation products and including pseudo-lignins. Employing only slightly harsher conditions promote fractionation, but also formation of sugar degradation structures that covalently incorporate into the oligomeric and polymeric lignin structures, causing the isolated organosolv lignins to contain lignin-humin hybrid (HLH) structures not yet evidenced as such in organosolv lignins. These structures effortlessly explain observed unexpected solubility issues and unusual thermal responses, and their presence might have to be acknowledged in downstream lignin valorisation.

Degradation of cellulose polymorphs into glucose by HCl gas with simultaneous suppression of oxidative discoloration

As cellulose is the main polysaccharide in biomass, its degradation into glucose is a major undertaking in research concerning biofuels and bio-based platform chemicals. Here, we show that pressurized HCl gas is able to efficiently hydrolyze fibers of different crystalline forms (polymorphs) of cellulose when the water content of the fibers is increased to 30-50 wt%. Simultaneously, the harmful formation of strongly chromophoric humins can be suppressed by a simple addition of chlorite into the reaction system. 50-70 % glucose yields were obtained from cellulose I and II polymorphs while >90 % monosaccharide conversion was acquired from cellulose III_II after a mild post-hydrolysis step. Purification of the products is relatively unproblematic from a gas-solid mixture, and a gaseous catalyst is easier to recycle than the aqueous counterpart. The results lay down a basis for future practical solutions in cellulose hydrolysis where side reactions are controlled, conversion rates are efficient, and the recovery of products and reagents is effortless.

Redox characteristics of humins and their coupling with potential PCB dechlorinators in southern Yellow Sea sediments

Natural attenuation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by indigenous bacteria is an effective remediation strategy for polluted marine sediments. This study investigated the relationships between PCB concentrations in sediment pore water, humin electron transfer capacity, and potential PCB dechlorinators at eight sediment sampling sites in the southern Yellow Sea, China, with differential PCB contamination. Station A2 showed the highest PCB concentration (453.16 ng L^-1 for seven indicator PCBs), especially of less chlorinated PCB congeners (≤5 Cl atoms), humin redox activity, and Dehalococcoides abundance (p < 0.05). Statistical analyses revealed a highly positive correlation between Dehalococcoides abundance and PCB concentration (r = 0.836, p < 0.05) and the electron shuttling ability of humins (r = 0.952, p < 0.01), whereas this was not observed for total bacteria and other potential PCB dechlorinators, e.g., Dehalobacter and Dehalogenimonas. Based on these results, Dehalococcoides might play an important role in the in situ reductive dechlorination of PCBs involving humins in marine sediments, and the natural microbial PCB attenuation capacity at station A2 was high. Chemical characterizations, electrochemical properties, and Fourier transform infrared analysis suggested that humins at station A2 had the highest electron transfer capacity. Furthermore, quinones are likely to be the functional groups that shuttle electrons during PCB dechlorination. Overall, this study provides a useful foundation for evaluating the natural microbial attenuation potential and fates of PCBs in marine sediments and for determining the role of humins as redox mediators in in situ PCB dechlorination by putative indigenous dechlorinators.

Formation of degradation compounds from lignocellulosic biomass in the biorefinery: sugar reaction mechanisms

The degradation compounds formed during pretreatment when lignocellulosic biomass is processed to ethanol or other biorefinery products include furans, phenolics, organic acids, as well as mono- and oligomeric pentoses and hexoses. Depending on the reaction conditions glucose can be converted to 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furaldehyde (HMF) and/or levulinic acid, formic acid and different phenolics at elevated temperatures. Correspondingly, xylose can follow different reaction mechanisms resulting in the formation of furan-2-carbaldehyde (furfural) and/or various C-1 and C-4 compounds. At least four routes for the formation of HMF from glucose and three routes for furfural formation from xylose are possible. In addition, new findings show that biomass monosaccharides themselves can react further to form pseudo-lignin and humins as well as a wide array of other compounds when exposed to high temperatures. Hence, several aldehydes and ketones and many different organic acids and aromatic compounds may be generated during hydrothermal treatment of lignocellulosic biomass. The reaction mechanisms are of interest because the very same compounds that are possible inhibitors for biomass processing enzymes and microorganisms may be valuable biobased chemicals. Hence a new potential for industrial scale synthesis of chemicals has emerged. A better understanding of the reaction mechanisms and the impact of the reaction conditions on the product formation is thus a prerequisite for designing better biomass processing strategies and forms an important basis for the development of new biorefinery products from lignocellulosic biomass as well.
