Prevalence and clinical characteristics of Sarcopenia in older adult patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a cross-sectional and follow-up study

BACKGROUND

The relationship between sarcopenia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been increasingly reported, and there is some overlap regarding their clinical features and pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) strategies. No Korean study has reported the actual prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with stable COPD who are recommended for pulmonary rehabilitation. This study evaluated the prevalence and clinical features of sarcopenia in older adult outpatients with stable COPD and the changes after 6 months.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional and 6-month follow-up study, we recruited 63 males aged ≥ 65 diagnosed with stable COPD. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the AWGS 2019 criteria, which included hand grip strength testing, bioelectrical impedance analysis, Short Physical Performance Battery administration, and Strength, Assistance with walking, Rising from a chair, Climbing stairs, and Falling screening tool administration. A 6-minute walk test (6 MWT) was conducted, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (MIP and MEP, respectively) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were assessed, and patient-reported questionnaires were administered.

RESULTS

At baseline, 14 (22%) patients were diagnosed with possible sarcopenia, and eight (12.6%) were diagnosed with sarcopenia. There were significant differences in the age; body mass index; Body mass index, airflow Obstruction, Dyspnea, and Exercise index; modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scores; and International Physical Activity Questionnaire scores between the normal and sarcopenia groups. Whole-body phase angle, MIP, MEP, PEF, and 6-minute walk distance (6 MWD) also showed significant differences. Over 6 months, the proportion of patients with a reduced FEV1 increased; however, the proportion of patients with sarcopenia did not increase.

CONCLUSION

A relatively low prevalence of sarcopenia was observed in older adult outpatients with stable COPD. No significant change in the prevalence of sarcopenia was found during the 6-month follow-up period.

Incidence and Risk Factors of Pneumonia in Individuals With Acute Spinal Cord Injury: A Multi-national, Multi-center, Prospective Cohort Study

OBJECTIVE

To describe the occurrence of pneumonia in individuals with acute spinal cord injury (SCI) and identify its key predictors.

DESIGN

Multi-centric, longitudinal cohort study.

SETTING

10 specialized SCI rehabilitation units in Europe and Australia.

PARTICIPANTS

Eligible were 902 men and women with acute SCI, aged 18 years or older, with cervical or thoracic lesions and not dependent on 24-hour mechanical ventilation; 503 participated in the study (N=503).

INTERVENTIONS

Not applicable.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

We assessed demographics and lesion related parameters at study entry, and any pneumonia events throughout inpatient rehabilitation. Respiratory function, decubitus, and urinary tract infections were assessed at 1, 3, and 6 months post injury as well as at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Time to event (pneumonia) analyses were done using the Kaplan-Meier method, and potential predictors for pneumonia were analyzed with multivariable survival models.

RESULTS

Five hundred three patients with SCI were included, with 70 experiencing at least 1 pneumonia event. 11 participants experienced 2 or more events during inpatient rehabilitation. Most events occurred very early after injury, with a median of 6 days. Pneumonia risk was associated with tetraplegia (hazard ratio [HR]=1.78; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00-3.17) and traumatic etiology (HR=3.75; 95% CI 1.30-10.8) American Spinal Injury Impairment Scale (AIS) A (HR=5.30; 95% CI 2.28-12.31), B (HR=4.38; 95% CI 1.77-10.83), or C (HR=4.09; 95% CI 1.71-9.81) lesions. For every 10 cmH2O increase in inspiratory muscle strength, pneumonia risk was reduced by 13% (HR=0.87; 95% CI 0.78-0.97).

CONCLUSION

Pneumonia is a major complication after SCI with the highest incidence very early after injury. Individuals with traumatic or AIS A, B, or C tetraplegia are at highest risk for pneumonia.

Maximal Respiratory Pressure Reference Equations in Healthy Adults and Cut-off Points for Defining Respiratory Muscle Weakness

INTRODUCTION

Maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures (PImax/PEmax) reference equations obtained in healthy people are needed to correctly interpret respiratory muscle strength. Currently, no clear cut-off points defining respiratory muscle weakness are available. We aimed to establish sex-specific reference equations for PImax/PEmax in a large sample of healthy adults and to objectively determine cut-off points for respiratory muscle weakness.

METHODS

A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted across 14 Spanish centres. Healthy non-smoking volunteers aged 18-80 years stratified by sex and age were recruited. PImax/PEmax were assessed using uniform methodology according to international standards. Multiple linear regressions were used to obtain reference equations. Cut-off points for respiratory muscle weakness were established by using T-scores.

RESULTS

The final sample consisted of 610 subjects (314 females; 48 [standard deviation, SD: 17] years). Reference equations for PImax/PEmax included body mass index and a squared term of the age as independent variables for both sexes (p<0.01). Cut-off points for respiratory muscle weakness based on T-scores ≥2.5 SD below the peak mean value achieved at a young age were: 62 and 83cmH2O for PImax and 81 and 109cmH2O for PEmax in females and males, respectively.

CONCLUSION

These reference values, based on the largest dataset collected in a European population to date using uniform methodology, help identify cut-off points for respiratory muscle weakness in females and males. These data will help to better identify the presence of respiratory muscle weakness and to determine indications for interventions to improve respiratory muscle function.

Sniff and reverse-sniff nasal respiratory pressures after exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: A single-center prospective study

BACKGROUND

and objective: This study examined the validity of sniff nasal inspiratory (SNIP) and reverse-sniff nasal expiratory pressures (RSNEP) for estimating respiratory muscle strength and for predicting poor life expectancy following exacerbation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

METHODS

This prospective study included patients who were admitted for COPD exacerbation and underwent rehabilitation. At hospital discharge, SNIP, RSNEP, and maximum mouth inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory pressures (MEP) were measured, and the body mass index, degree of airflow obstruction, dyspnea, and exercise capacity (BODE) index was calculated by evaluating body mass index, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), the Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale, and 6-min walk distance.

RESULTS

Data from 43 patients (mean age 76.8 years, FEV1 42.8 % predicted) were analyzed. SNIP and RSNEP were moderately correlated with MIP and MEP, respectively. Bland-Altman plot means of SNIP (48.3 ± 17.5) and RSNEP (44.7 ± 23.8 cmH2O) were lower than those of MIP (54.8 ± 19.9) and MEP (76.4 ± 31.2 cmH2O), respectively, and the SNIP-MIP and RSNEP-MEP 95 % limits of agreement were wide. Logistic regression showed that SNIP and RSNEP were significantly associated with BODE score ≥7 (poor life expectancy), and predictive accuracy was 81.4 % when combining SNIP ≤49 and RSNEP ≤42 cmH2O.

CONCLUSION

After exacerbation in patients with COPD, SNIP and RSNEP are useful indicators that complement MIP and MEP. Furthermore, a combined SNIP and RSNEP test may be beneficial in predicting poor life expectancy.

Association of Diaphragm Thickness and Respiratory Muscle Strength With Indices of Sarcopenia

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the relationship between respiratory muscle strength, diaphragm thickness (DT), and indices of sarcopenia.

METHODS

This study included 45 healthy elderly volunteers (21 male and 24 female) aged 65 years or older. Sarcopenia indices, including hand grip strength (HGS) and body mass index-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM/BMI), were measured using a hand grip dynamometer and bioimpedance analysis, respectively. Calf circumference (CC) and gait speed were also measured. Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) were obtained using a spirometer, as a measure of respiratory muscle strength. DT was evaluated through ultrasonography. The association between indices of sarcopenia, respiratory muscle strength, and DT was evaluated using Spearman's rank correlation test, and univariate and multiple regression analysis.

RESULTS

ASM/BMI (r=0.609, p<0.01), CC (r=0.499, p<0.01), HGS (r=0.759, p<0.01), and gait speed (r=0.319, p<0.05) were significantly correlated with DT. In the univariate linear regression analysis, MIP was significantly associated with age (p=0.003), DT (p<0.001), HGS (p=0.002), CC (p=0.013), and gait speed (p=0.026). MEP was significantly associated with sex (p=0.001), BMI (p=0.033), ASM/BMI (p=0.003), DT (p<0.001), HGS (p<0.001), CC (p=0.001) and gait speed (p=0.004). In the multiple linear regression analysis, age (p=0.001), DT (p<0.001), and ASM/BMI (p=0.008) showed significant association with MIP. DT (p<0.001) and gait speed (p=0.050) were associated with MEP.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest that respiratory muscle strength is associated with DT and indices of sarcopenia. Further prospective studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.

Relationship between trunk control ability and respiratory function in stroke patients: A scoping review and meta-analysis

PURPOSE

Hemiparesis in stroke survivors has been reported to affect respiratory function. The relationship between trunk control and respiratory function, however, is not well understood. We aimed to map the state of the association between the trunk and respiratory function as well as evaluate the effect of a respiratory function training intervention on trunk control for stroke survivors.

METHODS

A scoping review and meta-analysis of observational and interventional studies were performed. Cochrane Library, CINAHL with Full Text (EBSCO), Medline (Ovid), and PubMed were searched using the terms stroke, respiratory, and trunk control. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist was used to examine the sections of each report.

RESULTS

A total of 102 studies were identified, of which 12, published between 2011 and 2022, were included in the meta-analysis or narrative synthesis. Three studies were included in the meta-analysis of the correlation between trunk control and respiratory function parameters (forced vital capacity [FVC], forced expiratory volume during the first breath [FEV₁], maximal inspiratory pressure [MIP], and maximal expiratory pressure [MEP]) with effect sizes (Fisher's z) for all outcomes, which ranged from small to intermediate (between 0.21 and 0.39). Furthermore, five studies were included in the meta-analysis of the effect of respiratory function training intervention on trunk control. An overall effect size (Cohen's d) of 1.47 corresponds to a large effect. We also found significant improvements in MIP and MEP, but not in FVC and FEV₁ for stroke survivors with the interventions.

CONCLUSION

Respiratory training, use of diaphragmatic resistance exercise or abdominal breathing, use of a pressure threshold-loading device, and the performance of functional strengthening exercises for the trunk muscles, were found to increase patients' trunk control and improve their respiratory muscle strength.

Maximal expiratory pressure compared with maximal expiratory pressure during induced cough as a predictor of extubation failure

OBJECTIVE

To compare the diagnostic performance of maximal expiratory pressure with maximal expiratory pressure during induced cough for predicting extubation failure within 72 hours in patients who completed a spontaneous breathing trial (SBT).

METHODS

The study was conducted between October 2018 and September 2019. All patients aged over 18 years admitted to the intensive care unit who required invasive mechanical ventilation for over 48 hours and successfully completed a spontaneous breathing trial were included. The maximal expiratory pressure was assessed with a unidirectional valve for 40 seconds, and verbal encouragement was given. The maximal expiratory pressure during induced cough was measured with slow instillation of 2mL of a 0.9% saline solution. The primary outcome variable was extubation failure.

RESULTS

Eighty patients were included, of which 43 (54%) were male. Twenty-two patients [27.5% (95%CI 18.9 - 38.1)] failed extubation within 72 hours. Differences were observed in the maximal expiratory pressure during induced cough between the group who failed extubation, with a median of 0cmH2O (P25-75: 0 - 90), and the group without extubation failure, with a median of 120cmH2O (P25-75: 73 - 120); p < 0.001.

CONCLUSION

In patients who completed a spontaneous breathing trial, the maximal expiratory pressure during induced cough had a higher diagnostic performance for predicting extubation failure within 72 hours.Clinicaltrials.gov Registry: NCT04356625.

Home-based respiratory muscle training on quality of life and exercise tolerance in long-term post-COVID-19: Randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effects of a home-based respiratory muscle training programme (inspiratory [IMT] or inspiratory/expiratory muscles [RMT]) supervised by telerehabilitation on quality of life and exercise tolerance in individuals with long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms. The secondary objective was to evaluate the effects of these programmes on respiratory muscle function, physical and lung function, and psychological state.

METHODS

88 individuals with long-term symptoms of fatigue and dyspnoea after COVID-19 diagnosis were randomly (1:1 ratio) assigned to IMT, IMT_sham, RMT or RMT_sham groups for an 8-week intervention (40min/day, 6 times/week). Primary outcomes were quality of life (EuroQol-5D questionnaire) and exercise tolerance (Ruffier test). Secondary outcomes were respiratory muscle function (inspiratory/expiratory muscle strength; inspiratory muscle endurance), physical function (lower and upper limb strength [1-min Sit-to-Stand and handgrip force]), lung function (forced spirometry), and psychological status (anxiety/depression levels and post-traumatic stress disorder). All outcomes were measured pre-, intermediate- (4^th week), and post-intervention.

RESULTS

At post-intervention, there was a statistically significant and large (d>0.90) improvement in quality of life, but not in exercise tolerance, in the RMT group compared with the RMT_sham group. Both of the real training groups produced a statistically significant and large increase in inspiratory muscle strength and endurance (d≥0.80) and in lower limb muscle strength (d≥0.77) compared with the 2 sham groups. Expiratory muscle strength and peak expiratory flow showed a statistically significant and large (d≥0.87) increase in the RMT group compared with the other 3 groups.

CONCLUSION

Only an 8-week supervised home-based RMT programme was effective in improving quality of life, but not exercise tolerance, in individuals with long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms. In addition, IMT and RMT programmes were effective in improving respiratory muscle function and lower limb muscle strength, but had no impact on lung function and psychological status.

Inspiratory Muscle Performance Is Related to Seated Balance Function in People With Spinal Cord Injury: An Observational Study

OBJECTIVE

To examine the relationship between inspiratory muscle performance (IMP) and functional sitting balance (FSB) in persons with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). We hypothesized that a moderate correlation would be found between IMP and FSB and that individuals with better balance would have better IMP.

DESIGN

The SCI-specific modification of the Function in Sitting Test (FIST-SCI) measured FSB. The IMP measures included (1) maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), (2) sustained MIP (SMIP), and (3) inspiratory duration. Upper extremity motor score (UEMS) and level of injury (LOI) were taken from International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury examinations. Spearman correlational analyses assessed relationships among these factors in the sample (N=37). Mann-Whitney U tests explored differences between 2 comparison group pairs (tetraplegia group [TG] vs paraplegia group [PG]; independent transfer group [ITG] vs assisted transfer group [ATG]). Regression analysis examined variables predictive of FSB in the TG.

Volunteers with tetraplegia (n=21, American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) A=8, B=7, C=6) and paraplegia (n=16, AIS A=9, B=4, C=3) (N=37).

RESULTS

UEMS, MIP, SMIP, and LOI had moderate to high correlations with FIST-SCI scores (ρ=0.720 (P<.001), 0.480 (P=.003), 0.467 (P=.004), 0.527 (P=.001), respectively). UEMS, MIP, and FIST-SCI scores were higher in the PG and ITG than the TG and ATG, respectively (PG vs. TG P values=<.001, .008, .002, respectively, and ITG vs. ATG P values=<.001, .032, <.001, respectively). Further, SMIP and UEMS predicted FIST-SCI balance scores in the TG, accounting for 55% of total variance (P<.001) (FIST-SCI=11.88+0.03 [SMIP]+0.425 [UEMS]).

CONCLUSIONS

The relationship between IMP and balance appears preserved after SCI. FSB was predicted, in part, via UEMS and SMIP in the TG. Future research should focus on the effect of SCI-based breathing interventions on FSB.

Respiratory disturbances in fibromyalgia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of case control studies

Background: Fibromyalgia is a debilitating syndrome characterized by diffuse and chronic musculoskeletal pain.Objective: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies to explore the respiratory disturbances among persons with fibromyalgia.Study appraisal and synthesis method: This review was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO; identification number CRD: 42,020,196,835). We systematically searched seven electronic databases for articles published before December 2020.Eligibility criteria: Case-control studies comparing adults with fibromyalgia syndrome and healthy individuals with regard to the respiratory disturbances.Results: A total of six studies were included in the quantitative analysis. Pooled analysis showed that persons with fibromyalgia reported reduced chest expansion (MD -0.72, 95% CI, -1.70 to 0.27, I² = 95%, p = 0.016), maximum expiratory pressure (MD -10.67, 95% CI, -18.62 to -2.72, I² = 77%, p = 0.009), maximum inspiratory pressure (MD 11.04, 95% CI, -14.45 to -7.62, I² = 0%, p < 0.001) and maximal voluntary ventilation (MD 11.79, 95% CI, -16.80 to -7.78, I² = 0%, p < 0.001).Conclusion: Persons with fibromyalgia experience respiratory disturbances, such as reduced chest expansion, maximum expiratory pressure, maximum inspiratory pressure, and maximal voluntary ventilation.

How Many Maneuvers Should We Do for Maximal Inspiratory and Expiratory Muscle Pressure Testing in Children: A Retrospective Review in Children with Cystic Fibrosis

OBJECTIVES

Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) could be useful clinical parameters in monitoring many conditions including cystic fibrosis (CF). However, current protocols for undertaking the measurements lack standardization including the number of repeated attempts to achieve best values. We aimed to (a) determine the optimum number of attempts to achieve best MIP/MEP values, and (b) evaluate if the number of attempts is consistent across two different test days.

METHODS

We analyzed data of a previous randomized controlled trial involving the effect of singing on respiratory muscle strength in 35 children with CF. On two different days (T1, T2) children performed MIP/MEP with at least ten attempts each to achieve < 10% repeatability.

RESULTS

All children achieved repeatable MIP/MEP values within 10-11 attempts with 24 (68.6%) and 26 (74.3%) of these achieving best values of MIP and MEP, respectively, at attempts 6-11. Median values of the pressures by three, five, eight and all attempts significantly increased with more attempts (all p < 0.05). At T2, 56% required fewer attempts to achieve best values, but 32% required more attempts, indicating that the number of attempts required was inconsistent between test days.

CONCLUSION

It is likely that at least ten attempts (best two within < 10% variability) is required to achieve best and reliable MIP/MEP in children with CF. A larger sample size in children with CF and various conditions is required to consolidate these findings.

Predictive equations of maximum respiratory mouth pressures: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Maximum inspiratory (Pimax) and expiratory (Pemax) mouth pressures are commonly used to detect respiratory muscle weakness resorting to predictive equations established for healthy people. There are several predictive equations, but they are widespread in the literature. This study aimed to review the existent predictive equations of maximum inspiratory (Pimax) and expiratory (Pemax) mouth pressures for adults. Additionally, we aimed to identify which ones were generated based on international standards.

METHODS

A systematic review of predictive equations of Pimax and Pemax for healthy adults was conducted. A comprehensive search was performed of Cochrane Library, EBSCO, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science to identify studies that presented at least one equation for Pimax or Pemax developed for healthy adults. The quality of studies was assessed by two reviewers with the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (Quadas-2).

RESULTS

Risk of bias was high in 8 of the 20 studies included. Forty-two Pimax and 34 Pemax equations were found, mostly using the variables age (n=39), weight (n=20) and height (n=8). These equations explained 3 to 96% of the Pimax/Pemax variance. They were developed with individuals from 11 countries (Portugal not included). Twelve Pimax and eight Pemax equations complied with international standards.

CONCLUSIONS

This review gathered the predictive equations that have been developed for both Pimax and Pemax, however most were generated from unstandardized procedures. Future studies should explore the suitability of these equations for populations for which specific ones are not available, such as the Portuguese population, and develop new equations if necessary.

Comparison of Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercises, Volume, and Flow-Oriented Incentive Spirometry on Respiratory Function in Stroke Subjects: A Non-randomized Study

Abstract.

BACKGROUND

Reduced respiratory muscle strength leads to reduced pulmonary function, chest wall movements in the affected side, and increased chest infections, which thereby reduces oxygenation and ventilation. Respiratory muscle training can be used in acute stroke subjects to increase their pulmonary function.

PURPOSE

To compare the short-term effects of diaphragmatic breathing exercise, flow, and volume-oriented incentive spirometry on respiratory function following stroke.

METHODS

A non-randomized hospital-based study was conducted at Kasturba Medical College Hospitals, Mangalore, India. Forty-two sub-acute subjects of either gender, with the first episode of stroke within six months, were assigned to three groups by the consultant, i.e., diaphragmatic breathing group (DBE), Flow oriented-incentive spirometry group (FIS), and volume oriented-incentive spirometry group (VIS; N = 14) each. All subjects received intervention thrice daily, along with conventional stroke rehabilitation protocols throughout the study period. Pre- and post-intervention values were taken on alternate days until day 5 for all the three groups.

RESULTS

The pulmonary function and maximal respiratory pressures were found to be significantly increased by the end of intervention in all three groups, but FIS and DBE groups had better results than VIS (FVC = FIS group, 13.71%; VIS group, 14.89%; DBE group, 21.27%, FEV1 = FIS group, 25.97%; VIS group, 22.52%; DBE group, 19.38%, PEFR = FIS group, 38.76%; VIS group,9.75%; DBE group, 33.16%, MIP = FIS group, 28.23%; VIS group, 19.36%; DBE group, 52.14%, MEP = FIS group, 43.00%; VIS group, 22.80%; DBE group, 28.68%).

CONCLUSION

Even though all interventions had positive outcomes in all variables, flow incentive spirometry had better results across all outcomes (pulmonary function and maximal respiratory pressures) when compared to the other two interventions making it a valuable tool for stroke rehabilitation.

Respiratory muscle strength for discriminating frailty in community-dwelling elderly: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVES

To compare obtained and predicted inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength between frail, pre-frail, and non-frail older people; to examine the association between inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength and frailty in older people; and to determine cut-off points for inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength for discriminating frailty in older people.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted with 379 community-dwelling older adults. Frailty was assessed using Fried's phenotype, while inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength were measured with maximum inspiratory and maximum expiratory pressures. Inferential analyses were performed using paired Student t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests, and a multinomial logistic regression model. ROC curves were constructed to establish cut-off points of maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures for discriminating frailty and pre-frailty.

RESULTS

Frail and pre-frail participants presented significantly lower mean inspiratory and expiratory pressures compared to non-frail participants; values were significantly lower than predicted. Inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength were inversely associated with frailty and pre-frailty. Cut-off points ≥-50cmH₂O and ≤60cmH₂O for maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures, respectively, were established as optimal discriminators of frailty. The cut-off point ≤65cmH₂O for maximum expiratory pressure was established as a discriminant for the presence of pre-frailty.

CONCLUSIONS

Inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength were lower in frail than in pre-frail older adults, and lower in pre-frail than in non-frail peers. Frailty and pre-frailty were inversely associated with inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength. Cut-off points for inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength may be useful in clinical practice for discriminating frailty and pre-frailty in older adults.

Normative values for maximal respiratory pressures in an Indian Mangalore population: A cross-sectional pilot study

Objective:

The objective of the pilot study is to obtain normal maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures for individuals in the age group 20-70 years in the Mangalore population and to predict normal values according to age, sex, height, and weight using the regression equation.

Materials and Methods:

Two hundred and fifty subjects were selected through a convenient method of sampling. Fifty subjects each were enrolled in the following age groups: 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 to 70. Each group had 50 subjects (males-25 and females-25). Baseline data such as height, weight, body mass index were recorded. Maximal inspiratory pressure (PI) and expiratory pressure (PE) were determined following standardized protocol.

Result:

With regard to PI max and PE max, the measured values were significantly lower than those recorded in previous studies for both males (30%) and females (20%). We found that age served as the best factor for the prediction of PI max and PE max in both genders.

Conclusion:

The results of this study can be used to predict respiratory muscle strength in healthy adult subjects, and the strategy employed in this study will serve as a useful, simple, reproducible, rapid assessment of respiratory muscle function and also aid the planning of treatment.
