Alternate wetting and drying water management can reduce phosphorus availability under lowland rice cultivation irrespective of nitrogen level

The limited availability of phosphorus (P) in the soil, which is affected by soil moisture, has a significant impact on crop production. However, we still do not fully understand how water management and nitrogen (N) addition affect the availability of P in paddy soil. An evaluation of the effects of two water management strategies that is continuous flooding (CF) and alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation along with various nitrogenous fertilizer addition rates (equivalent to 0, 100%, 133%, and 166% recommended dose of N addition) on P availability in paddy soil took place over the course of a 2-year field experiment. The results showed that water management had a significant influence on ferrous iron, microbial biomass P, and soil-available P. However, the addition of N did not affect the availability of P in the soil. When N was added at various rates, AWD consistently reduced the amount of soil-available P compared to CF. This was primarily because AWD increased microbial biomass, which immobilized P and decreased the content of ferrous iron. As a result, the soil's ability to absorb P increased, leading to a decrease in the amount of P available. In conclusion, AWD decreases the amount of available P in paddy soil compared to CF.

Enhanced soil P immobilization and microbial biomass P by application of biochar modified with eggshell

Phosphate fertilizers have been excessively applied in agricultural production, bringing the risk of phosphorus (P) loss to nearby river systems and low utilization efficiency. In this study, eggshell-modified biochars prepared by pyrolysis of eggshell and corn straw or pomelo peel were applied to soil for enhancing P immobilization and utilization. The structure and properties of modified biochars before and after P adsorption were analyzed using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption method, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The eggshell-modified biochar performed an excellent adsorption performance for P (up to 200 mg/g), which was well described by the Langmuir model (R2 > 0.969), showing monolayer chemical adsorption with homogenous surface. The Ca(OH)2 appeared on the surface of eggshell modified biochars and changed to Ca5(PO4)3(OH) and CaHPO4(H2O)2 after P adsorption. The release of immobilized P by modified biochar increased with decreased pH. In addition, pot experiments of soybean indicated that the combined application of modified biochar and P fertilizer significantly increased the content of microbial biomass P in soil, raising from 4.18 mg/kg (control group) to 51.6-61.8 mg/kg (treatment group), and plants height increased by 13.8-26.7%. Column leaching experiments showed that P concentration in the leachate decreased by 97.9% with the modified biochar application. This research provides a new perspective that the eggshell-modified biochar could serve as a potential soil amendment for enhancing P immobilization and utilization.

Biochar additions alter phosphorus and nitrogen availability in agricultural ecosystems: A meta-analysis

Biochar is a carbon (C) rich product of thermochemical conversion of organic material that is used as a soil amendment due to its resistance to decomposition and its influence on nutrient dynamics; however, individual studies on biochar effects on phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) have proven inconsistent. Herein, we performed a meta-analysis of 124 published studies to evaluate the influence of biochar on available P, microbial biomass P (MBP), and inorganic N (NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N) in global agricultural ecosystems. Overall, the results showed that biochar applications significantly increased surface soil available P by 45% and MBP by 48% across the full range of biochar characteristics, soil type, or experimental conditions. By contrast, biochar addition to soil reduced NO₃^--N concentrations by 12% and NH₄⁺-N by 11%, but in most cases biochar added in combination with organic fertilizer significantly increased soil NH₄⁺-N compared to controls. Biochar C:N ratio and biochar source (feedstock) strongly influenced soil P availability response to biochar where inorganic N was most influenced by biochar C:N ratio and soil pH. Biochar made from manure or other low C:N ratio materials, generated at low temperatures, or applied at high rates were generally more effective at enhancing soil available P. It is important, however, to note that most negative results were observed in short-term (<6 months) where long-term studies (>12 months) tended to result in neutral to modest positive effects on both P and N. This meta-analysis indicates that biochar generally enhances soil P availability when added to soils alone or in combination with fertilizer. These findings provide a scientific basis for developing more rational strategies toward widespread adoption of biochar as a soil amendment for agricultural P and N management.

Conversion of rainforest into agroforestry and monoculture plantation in China: Consequences for soil phosphorus forms and microbial community

Microbial communities and their associated enzyme activities affect quantity and quality of phosphorus (P) in soils. Land use change is likely to alter microbial community structure and feedback on ecosystem structure and function. This study presents a novel assessment of mechanistic links between microbial responses to land use and shifts in the amount and quality of soil phosphorus (P). We investigated effects of the conversion of rainforests into rubber agroforests (AF), young rubber (YR), and mature rubber (MR) plantations on soil P fractions (i.e., labile P, moderately labile P, occluded P, Ca P, and residual P) in Hainan Island, Southern China. Microbial community composition and microbial enzyme were assayed to assess microbial community response to forest conversion. In addition, we also identified soil P fractions that were closely related to soil microbial and chemical properties in these forests. Conversion of forest to pure rubber plantations and agroforestry system caused a negative response in soil microorganisms and activity. The bacteria phospholipid fatty acid (PLFAs) levels in young rubber, mature rubber and rubber agroforests decreased after forest conversion, while the fungal PLFAs levels did not change. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (16:1w5c) had the highest value of 0.246μmol(gOC)^-1 in natural forest, followed by rubber agroforests, mature rubber and young rubber. Level of soil acid phosphatase activity declined soon (5 years) after forest conversion compared to natural forest, but it improved in mature rubber and agroforestry system. Labile P, moderately labile P, occluded P and residual P were highest in young rubber stands, while moderately labile, occluded and residual P were lowest in rubber agroforestry system. Soil P fractions such as labile P, moderately labile P, and Ca P were the most important contributors to the variation in soil microbial community composition. We also found that soil P factions differ significantly among the four transformation systems. Soil labile P faction and its potential sources (moderately labile P, occluded P, and residual P) were positively correlated with NO₃^-, but negatively correlated with AMF, suggesting that these properties play key roles in P transformation. Our study indicated that land use had an impact on microbial community composition and functions, which consequently influenced soil phosphorus availability and cycling.
