Gaining Insights into the Interplay between Optical and Magnetic Properties in Photoexcited Coordination Compounds

We describe early and recent advances in the fascinating field of combined magnetic and optical properties of inorganic coordination compounds and in particular of 3d-4f single molecule magnets. We cover various applied techniques which allow for the correlation of results obtained in the frequency and time domain in order to highlight the specific properties of these compounds and the future challenges towards multidimensional spectroscopic tools. An important point is to understand the details of the interplay of magnetic and optical properties through performing time-resolved studies in the presence of external fields especially magnetic ones. This will enable further exploration of this fundamental interactions i.e. the two components of electromagnetic radiation influencing optical properties.

The overlooked role of UV185 induced high-energy excited states in the dephosphorization of organophosphorus pesticide by VUV/persulfate

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) recently attracted widespread interests. However, the role of UV₁₈₅ in VUV is only considered to be generating a series of active species, while the effect of photoexcitation has long been overlooked. In this work, the role of UV₁₈₅ induced high-energy excited state for the dephosphorization of organophosphorus pesticides was studied using malathion as a model. Results showed malathion degradation was highly related to radical yield, while its dephosphorization was not. It was UV₁₈₅ rather than UV₂₅₄ or radical yield that was responsible for malathion dephosphorization by VUV/persulfate. DFT calculation results demonstrated that the polarity of P-S bond was further increased during UV₁₈₅ excitation, favoring dephosphorization while UV₂₅₄ did not. The conclusion was further supported by degradation path identification. Moreover, despite the fact that anions (Cl^-, SO₄^2- and NO₃^-) considerably affected radical yield, only Cl^- and NO₃^- with high molar extinction coefficient at 185 nm significantly affected dephosphorization. This study shed light on the crucial role of excited states in VUV based AOPs and provided a new idea for the development of mineralization technology of organophosphorus pesticides.

Role of sunlight and oxygen on the performance of photo-Fenton process at near neutral pH using organic fertilizers as iron chelates

Nowadays, reaction mechanisms of photo-Fenton process with chelated iron are not yet clearly defined. In this study, five organic fertilizers were used as iron complexes to investigate the role of sunlight and oxygen in photo-Fenton at near neutral pH. UV absorbance and stability constant of each selected iron chelate is different, and this work demonstrates that these parameters affect the reaction mechanisms in SMX degradation. Irradiation experiments without H₂O₂ revealed that only EDDS-Fe and DTPA-Fe achieved SMX degradation, but different iron release. These results, together with soluble oxygen free experiments, allowed the proposal of complementary reaction mechanisms to those of the classical photo-Fenton. The proposed mechanisms start through the potential photoexcitation of the iron complex, followed by subsequent oxygen-mediated hydroxyl radical generation reactions that are different for EDDS-Fe and DTPA-Fe. Moreover, irradiation experiments using EDTA-Fe and HEDTA-Fe had negligible SMX degradation despite iron release was observed, evidencing the differences between iron chelates.

Crystallographic Studies of Rhodopsins: Structure and Dynamics

Crystal structures have provided detailed insight in the architecture of rhodopsin photoreceptors. Of particular interest are the protein-chromophore interactions that govern the light-induced retinal isomerization and ultimately induce the large structural changes important for the various biological functions of the family. The reaction intermediates occurring along the rhodopsin photocycle have vastly differing lifetimes, from hundreds of femtoseconds to milliseconds. Detailed insight at high spatial and temporal resolution can be obtained by time-resolved crystallography using pump-probe approaches at X-ray free-electron lasers. Alternatively, cryotrapping approaches can be used. Both the approaches are described, including illumination and sample delivery. The importance of appropriate photoexcitation avoiding multiphoton absorption is stressed.

Nanoscale ZnO-based photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy

Due to the ability to induce the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation, ZnO nanoparticles show great potential in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Photo-triggered ROS production by ZnO nanoparticles and the resulting phototoxicity are efficient in killing cancer cells. This review highlights the recent exciting progress on the nanoscale ZnO-based photosensitizers (PSs) for PDT. Both the semplice ZnO nanoparticles as the PSs and the various chemicals (organic PS, dopant, metal and chemotherapeutic drugs) modified ZnO nanoparticles as the PSs show good ROS generation efficiency. The productive rate of ROS, the wavelength of exciting lights, and the therapeutic effect can be altered by doping different chemicals into ZnO nanoparticles at will. Additionally, we give some outlook on the design and functionalization of next-generation ZnO nanoparticles for more effective anti-cancer applications.

Mode of photoexcited C60 fullerene involvement in potentiating cisplatin toxicity against drug-resistant L1210 cells

Introduction: C₆₀ fullerene has received great attention as a candidate for biomedical applications. Due to unique structure and properties, C₆₀ fullerene nanoparticles are supposed to be useful in drug delivery, photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer, and reversion of tumor cells’ multidrug resistance. The aim of this study was to elucidate the possible molecular mechanisms involved in photoexcited C₆₀ fullerene-dependent enhancement of cisplatin toxicity against leukemic cells resistant to cisplatin.

Methods: Stable homogeneous pristine C₆₀ fullerene aqueous colloid solution (10^-4 М, purity 99.5%) was used in the study. The photoactivation of C₆₀ fullerene accumulated by L1210R cells was done by irradiation in microplates with light-emitting diode lamp (420-700 nm light, 100 mW·cm^-2). Cells were further incubated with the addition of Cis-Pt to a final concentration of 1 μg/mL. Activation of p38 MAPK was visualized by Western blot analysis. Flow cytometry was used for the estimation of cells distribution on cell cycle. Mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψ_m) was estimated with the use of fluorescent potential-sensitive probe TMRE (Tetramethylrhodamine Ethyl Ester).

Results: Cis-Pt applied alone at 1 μg/mL concentration failed to affect mitochondrial membrane potential in L1210R cells or cell cycle distribution as compared with untreated cells. Activation of ROS-sensitive proapoptotic p38 kinase and enhanced content of cells in subG1 phase were detected after irradiation of L1210R cells treated with 10^-5M C₆₀ fullerene. Combined treatment with photoexcited C₆₀ fullerene and Cis-Pt was followed by the dissipation of Δψ_m at early-term period, blockage of cell transition into S phase, and considerable accumulation of cells in proapoptotic subG1 phase at prolonged incubation.

Conclusion: The effect of the synergic cytotoxic activity of both agents allowed to suppose that photoexcited C₆₀ fullerene promoted Cis-Pt accumulation in leukemic cells resistant to Cis-Pt. The data obtained could be useful for the development of new approaches to overcome drug-resistance of leukemic cells.

Photoconductivity, pH Sensitivity, Noise, and Channel Length Effects in Si Nanowire FET Sensors

Silicon nanowire (NW) field-effect transistor (FET) sensors of various lengths were fabricated. Transport properties of Si NW FET sensors were investigated involving noise spectroscopy and current-voltage (I-V) characterization. The static I-V dependencies demonstrate the high quality of fabricated silicon FETs without leakage current. Transport and noise properties of NW FET structures were investigated under different light illumination conditions, as well as in sensor configuration in an aqueous solution with different pH values. Furthermore, we studied channel length effects on the photoconductivity, noise, and pH sensitivity. The magnitude of the channel current is approximately inversely proportional to the length of the current channel, and the pH sensitivity increases with the increase of channel length approaching the Nernst limit value of 59.5 mV/pH. We demonstrate that dominant 1/f-noise can be screened by the generation-recombination plateau at certain pH of the solution or external optical excitation. The characteristic frequency of the generation-recombination noise component decreases with increasing of illumination power. Moreover, it is shown that the measured value of the slope of 1/f-noise spectral density dependence on the current channel length is 2.7 which is close to the theoretically predicted value of 3.

Catalyst-free activation of peroxides under visible LED light irradiation through photoexcitation pathway

Catalysts are known to activate peroxides to generate active radicals (i.e., hydroxyl radical (OH) and sulfate radical (SO₄^-)) under certain conditions, but the activation of peroxides in the absence of catalysts under visible light irradiation has been rarely reported. This work demonstrates a catalyst-free activation of peroxides for the generation of OH and/or SO₄^- through photoexcited electron transfer from organic dyes to peroxides under visible LED light irradiation, where Rhodamine B (RhB) and Eosin Y (EY) were selected as model dyes. The formation of OH and/or SO₄^- in the reactions and the electron transfer from the excited dyes to peroxides were validated via electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), photoluminescence (PL) spectra and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The performance of the peroxide/dye/Vis process was demonstrated to be altered depending on the target substrate. Meanwhile, the peroxide/dye/Vis process was effective for simultaneous decolorization of dyes and production of active radicals under neutral even or basic conditions. The findings of this study clarified a novel photoexcitation pathway for catalyst-free activation of peroxides under visible light irradiation, which could avoid the secondary metal ion (dissolved or leached) pollution from the metal-based catalysts and expand the application range of the peroxide-based catalytic process.

c-Jun N-terminal kinase-dependent apoptotic photocytotoxicity of solvent exchange-prepared curcumin nanoparticles

Indian spice curcumin is known for its anticancer properties, but the anticancer mechanisms of nanoparticulate curcumin have not been completely elucidated. We here investigated the in vitro anticancer effect of blue light (470 nm, 1 W)-irradiated curcumin nanoparticles prepared by tetrahydrofuran/water solvent exchange, using U251 glioma, B16 melanoma, and H460 lung cancer cells as targets. The size of curcumin nanocrystals was approximately 250 nm, while photoexcitation induced their oxidation and partial agglomeration. Although cell membrane in the absence of light was almost impermeable to curcumin nanoparticles, photoexcitation stimulated their internalization. While irradiation with blue light (1-8 min) or nanocurcumin (1.25-10 μg/ml) alone was only marginally toxic to tumor cells, photoexcited nanocurcumin displayed a significant cytotoxicity depending both on the irradiation time and nanocurcumin concentration. Photoexcited nanocurcumin induced phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), mitochondrial depolarization, caspase-3 activation, and cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, indicating apoptotic cell death. Accordingly, pharmacologial inhibition of JNK and caspase activity rescued cancer cells from photoexcited nanocurcumin. On the other hand, antioxidant treatment did not reduce photocytotoxicity of nanocurcumin, arguing against the involvement of oxidative stress. By demonstrating the ability of photoexcited nanocurcumin to induce oxidative-stress independent, JNK- and caspase-dependent apoptosis, our results support its further investigation in cancer therapy.

Photoexcitation of the high-spin J=8 isomer in (176)Yb using 8.5MeV end-point energy Bremsstrahlung

Excitation of the 1049.8keV isomeric state (t1/2=11.4s, spin difference between ground and isomeric states ΔJ=8) in (176)Yb using Bremsstrahlung radiation is observed for the first time. In contrast to the photoexcitation of isomeric states in other nuclei with lower spin differences, where effective integrated cross-sections are of order tens to hundreds of barneV, an integrated cross-section of just 0.0484±0.066barneV is observed for (176)Yb.

A DFT/TD-DFT study of thiazolidinedione derivative in dimethylformamide: cooperative roles of hydrogen bondings, electronic and vibrational spectra

The time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) method has been applied to investigate the thiazolidinedione (TZD) derivative A and its hydrogen-bonded complexes with dimethylformamide (DMF) (A-DMF and A-2DMF). The calculation results showed that the excited-state hydrogen bondings of O-H⋯O=C and N-H⋯O=C are strengthened and weakened in the hydrogen-bonded trimer A-2DMF, and their cooperation effect caused a blue shift in the electronic spectrum of A-2DMF. This modulation mechanism of the hydrogen-bond strengthening and weakening and its role in influencing the spectroscopy property of the TZD derivative A in DMF have been analyzed and showed in details.
