Asymmetric metamaterial sandwich structure with NIM characteristics for THz imaging application

This study presented a unique, miniaturised asymmetric interconnected vertical stripe (IVS) design for terahertz (THz) frequency applications. Therefore, this research aimed to achieve a frequency response of 0 to 10 THz using a 5 × 5 µm2 Silicon (Si) substrate material. Meanwhile, various parametric examinations were conducted to investigate variations in the performance. For example, the unit cell selection process was carefully examined by using various design structures and modifying the structure by adding split gaps and connecting bars between vertical stripes. Furthermore, the proposed sandwich structure design was used to compute the absorbance and reflectance properties. All the analytical examinations were executed utilising the Computer Simulation Technology (CST) 2019 software. The introduced IVS metamaterial exhibits negative index behaviour and has a single resonance frequency of 5.23 THz with an acceptable magnitude of - 24.38 dB. Additionally, the quadruple-layer IVS structure exhibits optimised transmission coefficient behaviour between 3 and 6 THz and 7 to 9 THz, respectively. However, the magnitude of the transmission coefficient increased with the number of material layers. Besides that, the absorbance study shows that using a quadruple-layer structure obtains unique and promising results. Overall, the proposed asymmetric IVS metamaterial design achieves the required performance by using a compact structure rather than extending the dimensions of the design.

Organelle Imaging with Terahertz Scattering-Type Scanning Near-Field Microscope

Organelles play core roles in living beings, especially in internal cellular actions, but the hidden information inside the cell is difficult to extract in a label-free manner. In recent years, terahertz (THz) imaging has attracted much attention because of its penetration depth in nonpolar and non-metallic materials and label-free, non-invasive and non-ionizing ability to obtain the interior information of bio-samples. However, the low spatial resolution of traditional far-field THz imaging systems and the weak dielectric contrast of biological samples hinder the application of this technology in the biological field. In this paper, we used an advanced THz scattering near-field imaging method for detecting chloroplasts on gold substrate with nano-flatness combined with an image processing method to remove the background noise and successfully obtained the subcellular-grade internal reticular structure from an Arabidopsis chloroplast THz image. In contrast, little inner information could be observed in the tea chloroplast in similar THz images. Further, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and mass spectroscopy (MS) were also used to detect structural and chemical differences inside the chloroplasts of Arabidopsis and tea plants. The preliminary results suggested that the interspecific different THz information is related to the internal spatial structures of chloroplasts and metabolite differences among species. Therefore, this method could open a new way to study the structure of individual organelles.

Terahertz-to-infrared converters for imaging the human skin cancer: challenges and feasibility

Purpose

Terahertz (THz) medical imaging is a promising noninvasive technique for monitoring the skin's conditions, early detection of the human skin cancer, and recovery from burns and wounds. It can be applied for visualization of the healing process directly through clinical dressings and restorative ointments, minimizing the frequency of dressing changes. The THz imaging technique is cost effective, as compared to the magnetic resonance method. Our aim was to develop an approach capable of providing better image resolution than the commercially available THz imaging cameras.

Approach

The terahertz-to-infrared (THz-to-IR) converters can visualize the human skin cancer by converting the latter's specific contrast patterns recognizable in THz radiation range into IR patterns, detectable by a standard IR imaging camera. At the core of suggested THz-to-IR converters are flat matrices transparent both in the THz range to be visualized and in the operating range of the IR camera, these matrices contain embedded metal nanoparticles (NPs), which, when irradiated with THz rays, convert the energy of THz photons into heat and become nanosources of IR radiation detectable by an IR camera.

Results

The ways of creating the simplest converter, as well as a more complex converter with wider capabilities, are considered. The first converter is a gelatin matrix with gold 8.5-nm diameter NPs, and the second is a polystyrene matrix with 2-nm diameter NPs from copper-nickel MONEL® alloy 404.

Conclusions

An approach with a THz-to-IR converter equipped with an IR camera is promising in that it could provide a better image of oncological pathology than the commercially available THz imaging cameras do.

Ultrabroadband Tellurium Photoelectric Detector from Visible to Millimeter Wave

Ultrabroadband photodetection is of great significance in numerous cutting-edge technologies including imaging, communications, and medicine. However, since photon detectors are selective in wavelength and thermal detectors are slow in response, developing high performance and ultrabroadband photodetectors is extremely difficult. Herein, one demonstrates an ultrabroadband photoelectric detector covering visible, infrared, terahertz, and millimeter wave simultaneously based on single metal-Te-metal structure. Through the two kinds of photoelectric effect synergy of photoexcited electron-hole pairs and electromagnetic induced well effect, the detector achieves the responsivities of 0.793 A W^-1 at 635 nm, 9.38 A W^-1 at 1550 nm, 9.83 A W^-1 at 0.305 THz, 24.8 A W^-1 at 0.250 THz, 87.8 A W^-1 at 0.172 THz, and 986 A W^-1 at 0.022 THz, respectively. It also exhibits excellent polarization detection with a dichroic ratio of 468. The excellent performance of the detector is further verified by high-resolution imaging experiments. Finally, the high stability of the detector is tested by long-term deposition in air and high-temperature aging. The strategy provides a recipe to achieve ultrabroadband photodetection with high sensitivity and fast response utilizing full photoelectric effect.

Highly Sensitive and Ultra-Broadband VO2(B) Photodetector Dominated by Bolometric Effect

In this study, Wadsley B phase vanadium oxide (VO₂(B)) with broad-band photoabsorption ability, a large temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), and low noise was developed for uncooled broad-band detection. By using a freestanding structure and reducing the size of active area, the VO₂(B) photodetector shows stable and excellent performances in the visible to the terahertz region (405 nm to 0.88 mm), with a peak TCR of -4.77% K^-1 at 40 °C, a peak specific detectivity of 6.02 × 10⁹ Jones, and a photoresponse time of 83 ms. A terahertz imaging ability with 30 × 30 pixels was demonstrated. Scanning photocurrent imaging and real-time temperature-photocurrent measurements confirm that a photothermal-type bolometric effect is the dominating mechanism. The study shows the potential of VO₂(B) in applications as a new type of uncooled broad-band photodetection material and the potential to further raise the performance of broad-band photodetectors by structural design.

Refractive Index-Based Terahertz Sensor Using Graphene for Material Characterization

In this paper, a graphene-based THz metamaterial has been designed and characterized for use in sensing various refractive index profiles. The proposed single-band THz sensor was constructed using a graphene-metal hybridized periodic metamaterial wherein the unit cell had a footprint of 1.395λ_eff × 1.395λ_eff and resonated at 4.4754 THz. The realized peak absorption was 98.88% at 4.4754 THz. The sensitivity of the proposed metamaterial sensor was estimated using the absorption characteristics of the unit cell. The performance of the sensor was analyzed under two different categories, viz. the random dielectric loading and chemical analytes, based on the refractive index. The proposed THz sensor offered a peak sensitivity of 22.75 GHz/Refractive Index Unit (RIU) for the various sample loadings. In addition, the effect of the sample thickness on the sensor performance was analyzed and the results were presented. From the results, it can be inferred that the proposed metamaterial THz sensor that was based on a refractive index is suitable for THz sensing applications.

All-Electronic Emitter-Detector Pairs for 250 GHz in Silicon

The spread of practical terahertz (THz) systems dedicated to the telecommunication, pharmacy, civil security, or medical markets requires the use of mainstream semiconductor technologies, such as complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) lines. In this paper, we discuss the operation of a CMOS-based free space all-electronic system operating near 250 GHz, exhibiting signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with 62 dB in the direct detection regime for one Hz equivalent noise bandwidth. It combines the state-of-the-art detector based on CMOS field-effect-transistors (FET) and a harmonic voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). Three generations of the oscillator circuit are presented, and the performance characterization techniques and their improvement are explained in detail. The manuscript presents different emitter-detector pair operation modalities, including spectroscopy and imaging.

Real-Time High Resolution THz Imaging with a Fiber-Coupled Photo Conductive Antenna and an Uncooled Microbolometer Camera

We present a real-time THz imaging method using a commercial fiber-coupled photo conductive antenna as the THz source and an uncooled microbolometer camera for detection. This new combination of state-of-the-art components is very adaptable due to its compact and uncooled radiation source, whose fiber coupling allows for a flexible placement. Using a camera with high sensitivity renders real-time imaging possible. As a proof-of-concept, the beam shape of a THz Time Domain Spectrometer was measured. We demonstrate real time imaging at nine frames per second and show its potential for practical applications in transmission geometry covering both material science and security tasks. The results suggest that hidden items, complex structures and the moisture content of (biological) materials can be resolved. We discuss the limits of the current setup, possible improvements and potential (industrial) applications, and we outline the feasibility of imaging in reflection geometry or extending it to multi-spectral imaging using band pass filters.

Fiber Coupled Transceiver with 6.5 THz Bandwidth for Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy in Reflection Geometry

We present a fiber coupled transceiver head for terahertz (THz) time-domain reflection measurements. The monolithically integrated transceiver chip is based on iron (Fe) doped In_0.53Ga_0.47As (InGaAs:Fe) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Due to its ultrashort electron lifetime and high mobility, InGaAs:Fe is very well suited as both THz emitter and receiver. A record THz bandwidth of 6.5 THz and a peak dynamic range of up to 75 dB are achieved. In addition, we present THz imaging in reflection geometry with a spatial resolution as good as 130 µm. Hence, this THz transceiver is a promising device for industrial THz sensing applications.

Experimental Research on Interferometric Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging with Multi-Channel Terahertz Radar System

The all solid-state terahertz (THz) radar has obvious miniaturized integration and high resolution imaging advantages compared with conventional microwave radar. In this paper, a 0.22 THz active frequency-modulated pulse radar system with one transmission channel and four receiving channels is presented, and interferometric inverse synthetic aperture radar (InISAR) imaging experiments, which can acquire altitude information of objects, are carried out. In order to acquire high-quality InISAR images, a calibration method is presented to solve the nonlinearity of wideband signal frequency and phase inconsistency of different receiving channels together. Furthermore, to deal with the phase wrapping in InISAR imaging of objects with large scale, a novel method based on the dominant scatterers to estimate the objects rotation rate is presented. Finally, to show more information of objects in the InISAR images, the imaging results with a large rotation angle by the convolutional back-projection algorithm are obtained. The imaging results verify the superior performance of the multi-channel THz radar system and the imaging processing method, which can provide support for further research on InISAR imaging in the THz band.

An ex vivo comparative study of occlusal and proximal caries using terahertz and X-ray imaging

OBJECTIVES:

To examine the effectiveness of terahertz (THz) pulsed imaging (TPI) in comparison to intraoral photostimulable phosphor late (PSP) and cone beam CT (CBCT) for the detection of dental caries ex vivo.

METHODS:

Newly extracted 32 human permanent teeth surfaces (16 with caries and 16 without caries) were serially sectioned mesiodistally and imaged by using four image sets as follows: (1) CBCT; (2) PSP; (3) THz movie video; and (4) THz static images. All images were evaluated twice separately by two calibrated observers for the presence/absence of caries using a 5-grade rating/confidence scale. Weighted κ coefficients were calculated. Different image sets were compared with the histological gold-standard using the receiver operating characteristic and area under curves for each image set were compared using χ² tests, with a significance level of α = 0.05.

RESULTS:

Intra- and interobserverκ-values for all image sets were almost excellent ranging between 0.777 and 0.988. Mean Az values of observers and readings were 0.898 for CBCT, 0.888 for PSP images, 0.853 for THz static images and 0.781 for THz video movie. No statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between Az values for the different image sets. When observer scores were evaluated according to caries location again no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05) were found between Az values for the occlusal and proximal caries for the four image sets.

CONCLUSIONS:

Terahertz pulsed imaging was found to be successful for the detection of dental caries ex vivo.

High-Speed Terahertz Waveform Measurement for Intense Terahertz Light Using 100-kHz Yb-Doped Fiber Laser

We demonstrate a high-speed terahertz (THz) waveform measurement system for intense THz light with a scan rate of 100 Hz. To realize the high scan rate, a loudspeaker vibrating at 50 Hz is employed to scan the delay time between THz light and electro-optic sampling light. Because the fast scan system requires a high data sampling rate, we develop an Yb-doped fiber laser with a repetition rate of 100 kHz optimized for effective THz light generation with the output electric field of 1 kV/cm. The present system drastically reduces the measurement time of the THz waveform from several minutes to 10 ms.

Differential CMOS Sub-Terahertz Detector with Subthreshold Amplifier

We propose a differential-type complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sub-terahertz (THz) detector with a subthreshold preamplifier. The proposed detector improves the voltage responsivity and effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) using the subthreshold preamplifier, which is located between the differential detector device and main amplifier. The overall noise of the detector for the THz imaging system is reduced by the preamplifier because it diminishes the noise contribution of the main amplifier. The subthreshold preamplifier is self-biased by the output DC voltage of the detector core and has a dummy structure that cancels the DC offsets generated by the preamplifier itself. The 200 GHz detector fabricated using 0.25 μm CMOS technology includes a low drop-out regulator, current reference blocks, and an integrated antenna. A voltage responsivity of 2020 kV/W and noise equivalent power of 76 pW/√Hz are achieved using the detector at a gate bias of 0.5 V, respectively. The effective SNR at a 103 Hz chopping frequency is 70.9 dB with a 0.7 W/m² input signal power density. The dynamic range of the raster-scanned THz image is 44.59 dB.

Exploring the complementarity of THz pulse imaging and DCE-MRIs: Toward a unified multi-channel classification and a deep learning framework

We provide a comprehensive account of recent advances in biomedical image analysis and classification from two complementary imaging modalities: terahertz (THz) pulse imaging and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). The work aims to highlight underlining commonalities in both data structures so that a common multi-channel data fusion framework can be developed. Signal pre-processing in both datasets is discussed briefly taking into consideration advances in multi-resolution analysis and model based fractional order calculus system identification. Developments in statistical signal processing using principal component and independent component analysis are also considered. These algorithms have been developed independently by the THz-pulse imaging and DCE-MRI communities, and there is scope to place them in a common multi-channel framework to provide better software standardization at the pre-processing de-noising stage. A comprehensive discussion of feature selection strategies is also provided and the importance of preserving textural information is highlighted. Feature extraction and classification methods taking into consideration recent advances in support vector machine (SVM) and extreme learning machine (ELM) classifiers and their complex extensions are presented. An outlook on Clifford algebra classifiers and deep learning techniques suitable to both types of datasets is also provided. The work points toward the direction of developing a new unified multi-channel signal processing framework for biomedical image analysis that will explore synergies from both sensing modalities for inferring disease proliferation.
