Why the belief in one's equal rights matters: Self-respect, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation in Western and non-Western countries

The present research investigated the relationship between self-respect (i.e., a person's belief of possessing the same rights as others) and depressive symptoms. Based on earlier longitudinal findings that self-respect fosters assertiveness and that assertiveness negatively predicts depressive symptoms, we tested these relationships in Western and non-Western countries. Additionally, we explored associations with suicidal ideation. Across seven countries (N = 2408) we found that self-respect and depressive symptoms were negatively correlated. In addition, we found evidence for an indirect path via assertiveness as well as negative correlations with suicidal ideation in countries with available measures. Finally, within-manuscript meta-analyses confirmed the main path between self-respect and depressive symptoms across all seven countries. This research presents the first evidence for the negative association between self-respect (feeling equal to others) and depressive symptoms and highlights new directions for linking self and self-regard to mental health.

Her legacy has become paramount in the progression of modern-day feminism, where her vigour for equality and diversity has stipulated campaigns to demand women's voting rights, deregulate acts of prostitution, improve working conditions for women, and promote world peace through her work.

Learning to Be Inclusive? Testing the Effects of News Media Diet on Attitudes Toward LGT Equality

This study analyzed a large national survey, the 2016 version of American National Election Study (ANES), to identify the predictors of attitudes toward the equal rights of lesbians, gay men, and transgender individuals. Egalitarian attitudes are associated with being female, younger, more liberal, less Republican, having a higher income and a lower level of fundamentalist religiosity, as well as consuming a wider variety of news media. Liberals tend to consume a larger number of news sources than conservatives. Also, news media diet mediates, instead of moderates, the effects of political ideology on support for the LGT community. Overall, a healthy diet of news media is associated with support for equality rights.

Adherence to guidelines on documentation required for registration to London GP practice websites: a mixed-methods cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

The most common obstacle to registration with a GP practice in the UK is difficulty presenting proof of address. NHS guidelines stipulate that inability to provide ID or proof of address is not reasonable grounds to refuse registration. Practices may ask patients to present ID/proof of address, but need a policy in case patients cannot.

AIM

To find out how many London GP practice websites ask for documentation without a policy for where this cannot be provided and compare how GP practice websites describe the registration process in patient-facing material.

DESIGN AND SETTING

Cross-sectional study of practices from 10 London boroughs (n = 100).

METHOD

A proforma was piloted and then implemented, recording whether practices 'demanded', 'requested', or 'mentioned' photo ID or proof of address and whether there was a plan for patients without documentation. Text relating to documentation from all 100 practices for registration was subjected to thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Out of 100 practices 75% asked for documentation. The majority of these were 'demanded'. A plan was included for people without documentation in 12% of practice websites. Five themes emerged from analysis of website content: reassuring people without documentation; diverse requirements between practices; conflating administration and treatment; withholding treatment; and immigration and ethnicity.

CONCLUSION

Many practice websites breached NHS Standard Operating Principles and possibly the Equalities Act 2010. All practices should create a clear policy for patients who do not have photo ID/proof of address (for example, including a named receptionist), and update their websites accordingly.
