Long-term benefits of a therapeutic make-up consultation for patients with various facial dermatoses

BACKGROUND

Therapeutic make-up has previously been proven to be efficacious in improving the quality of life of patients with facial dermatoses, but its efficacy has only been assessed in the short term (less than one month).

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to determine whether the effect of therapeutic make-up on patients' quality of life persists in the longer term, i.e., after one year.

MATERIALS & METHODS

This study included 53 patients who benefited from a therapeutic make-up consultation in the context of various facial dermatoses (pigmentation disorders, scars, acne, rosacea, eczema, adverse events of chemotherapy, etc.). Patients were asked to complete a quality-of-life questionnaire to obtain the Skindex score at baseline, and one month (M1) and one year (M12) after the first consultation. The difference in scores between baseline and M12 was calculated and Student's t-test was used to assess the significance of the values.

RESULTS

Our results showed a significant difference (p<0.001) with an improvement in quality-of-life score by more than 10% between baseline and M12, for all the dimensions of the score (Emotion, Symptoms and Functioning). Based on the subgroup analysis, this score particularly improved for patients suffering with acne or rosacea (p=0.009) and scars (p=0.43), as well as for younger patients (<30 years old) (p=0.009).

CONCLUSION

This is the first study to demonstrate a persistent long-term effect of therapeutic make-up on the quality of life of patients with facial dermatoses.

Perialar intertrigo in children and adolescents: A multicenter prospective study of 41 cases

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

We observed isolated cases of perialar intertrigo in children and teenagers that did not appear to correspond to any known clinical entity. The objective of this study was to describe the clinical features of this dermatosis and the clinical characteristics of the patients.

METHODS

We conducted a prospective, multicenter cohort study in France from August 2017 to November 2019. All the patients under 18 years of age with chronic perinasal intertrigo were included. A standardized questionnaire detailing the clinical characteristics of the patients and the description of the intertrigo. If possible, a Wood's lamp examination of the intertrigo was done.

RESULTS

Forty-one patients were included (25 boys and 16 girls, average age: 12.1 years). Intertrigo was bilateral in 38 patients (93%). The majority of patients had no symptoms (54%). Pruritus was present in 39% of cases. Orange red follicular fluorescence was present in the perialar region on Wood's light examination in 78% of cases with active fluorescence. The presumptive diagnoses suggested by the investigators were acne (24.4%), seborrheic dermatitis (19.5%), rosacea (9.8%), psoriasis (9.8%) and perioral dermatitis (7.3%). No diagnosis was proposed in 22% of the cases.

CONCLUSIONS

We describe a previously undescribed clinical sign which is characterized by a chronic bilateral erythematous intertrigo located in the perialar region. It can be isolated or associated with various facial dermatoses.

Maskne: The Epidemic within the Pandemic: From Diagnosis to Therapy

Maskne, a newly coined term deriving from the contraction of mask-related acne, is a form of mechanical acne resulting from continuous textile–skin adherence and friction. Prolonged mask use heats up the face environment, thus modifying skin microbiota and sebum production. Although effective prevalence is unknown, since the pandemic began and the prolonged use of masks was extended to the general population, maskne has been a frequent topic of consultation among dermatologists. This term has been successfully introduced into common language, with more than 200,000 hashtags on social media, where it is also possible to find “home remedies” that can worsen this dermatosis. The aim of this paper is to discuss the pathogenesis, address clinicians on the correct differential diagnoses among facial dermatoses, and move towards the correct therapy.

Adverse Effects of COVID-19 and Face Masks: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Due to the public health risk associated with SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection, universal use of face masks has been recommended to protect against viral spread. Adverse facial reactions from the utilization of masks in the general public are poorly characterized in literature.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to provide a systematic review of studies reporting adverse facial reactions associated with use of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched using the following search terms: "masks" AND "skin reactions, facial dermatosis, rash, acne, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, OR seborrheic dermatitis."

METHODS

A total of 954 cases of dermatological adverse effects were reported. Over 17 different adverse facial reactions were found, including the top 10 in order: itch (370, 38.8%), indentation/ear pain (102, 10.7%), discomfort (90, 9.4%), erythema (72, 7.5%), dryness (62, 6.5%), rash (60, 6.3%), scarring (42, 4.4%), desquamation (22, 2.3%), pain (19, 2.0%), burning (19, 2.0%), and wheals (7, 0.7%). Face masks can increase acne (n=44), rosacea (n=14), and seborrheic dermatitis (n=9).

LIMITATIONS

Publication bias of articles, with limited studies available regarding this topic.

CONCLUSION

Wearing face masks to protect from COVID-19 can increase adverse facial dermatoses and exacerbate underlying dermatology conditions; however, several preventative measures may be taken.

Sociodemographic characteristics and risk factor analysis of Demodex infestation (Acari: Demodicidae)

To identify sociodemographic characteristics and risk factor of Demodex infestation, 756 students aged 13-22 years in Xi'an, China were sampled for the school-based cross-sectional study. Demodex was examined using the cellophane tape method (CTP). The results showed that the total detection rate of Demodex was 67.6%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that five variables (gender, residence, sharing sanitary ware, frequency of face-wash per day, and use of facial cleanser) were found to be uncorrelated with Demodex infestation, whereas three variables (age, skin type, and skin disease) were found to be independent correlates. Students aged over 18 years had 22.1 times higher odds of Demodex infestation compared to those under 16 years and students aged 16-18 years also had 2.1 times higher odds compared to those aged 13-15 years. Odds of having a Demodex infestation for oily or mixed skin were 2.1 times those for dry or neutral skin. Students with a facial skin disease had 3.0 times higher odds of being infested with Demodex compared to those without. The inception rate of students with facial dermatoses increased in parallel with increasing mite count. The inception rates were 21.3%, 40.7%, 59.2%, and 67.7% in the negative, mild, moderate, and severe infestation groups, respectively (χ(2)=60.6, P<0.001). Specifically, the amount of infested mites and inception rate of acne vulgaris were positively correlated (R(2)=0.57, moderate infestation odds ratio (OR)=7.1, severe infestation OR=10.3). It was concluded that Demodex prevalence increases with age, and Demodex presents in nearly all adult human. Sebaceous hyperplasia with oily or mixed skin seems to favour Demodex proliferation. Demodex infestation could be associated with acne vulgaris. The CTP is a good sampling method for studies of Demodex prevalence.
