Addressing College Food Insecurity: An Assessment of Federal Legislation Before and During Coronavirus Disease-2019

Research conducted before coronavirus disease-2019 illustrated high rates of food insecurity among college students. The pandemic has likely increased student food insecurity because of factors like unemployment and closure of campus resources, and many students cannot access federal food assistance because of long-standing student restrictions. This perspective reviews federal legislation on college food insecurity introduced in the 116th legislative session (2019-2020) immediately before coronavirus disease-2019 in the US, as well as pandemic-related stimulus bills and their implications for future policies and practice. Food insecurity promises to become more pressing as colleges try to reopen and the country grapples with economic recovery.

Evaluation of US Federal Legislation for Opioid Abuse: 1973-2016

The 114th Congress (2014-2016) has received recent attention for the high number of legislative bills directed to the public health crisis in prescription opioid abuse. The US government does not have a single source for determining public policy; however, the people expect that there will be some level of efficiency and coordination between federal and state leaders to improve the nation's health. A search of the National Library of Congress database to analyze legislative bills introduced between 1973 and 2016 and which contain the term "opioid" identified 127 bills that characterize consistency and coordination with other governmental efforts in prescription opioid abuse. Despite the recent number of introduced bills, there does not appear to be a close coordination between Congress and Federal Administrative agencies regarding this crisis.

Patient-centered medical home model: do school-based health centers fit the model?

School-based health centers (SBHCs) are an important component of health care reform. The SBHC model of care offers accessible, continuous, comprehensive, family-centered, coordinated, and compassionate care to infants, children, and adolescents. These same elements comprise the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model of care being promoted by the Affordable Care Act with the hope of lowering health care costs by rewarding clinicians for primary care services. PCMH survey tools have been developed to help payers determine whether a clinician/site serves as a PCMH. Our concern is that current survey tools will be unable to capture how a SBHC may provide a medical home and therefore be denied needed funding. This article describes how SBHCs might meet the requirements of one PCMH tool. SBHC stakeholders need to advocate for the creation or modification of existing survey tools that allow the unique characteristics of SBHCs to qualify as PCMHs.

The research and policy importance of nursing sample surveys and minimum data sets

This article reviews the information gathered by the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN) and other sources of data on the registered nurse (RN) workforce. It examines how the data have been used to create knowledge about the RN workforce and highlights the relative strengths and weaknesses of different data sets. Recommendations for future data collection affirm the Institute of Medicine's recommendation that both license-record based minimum data and the NSSRN be collected in order to help the United States and states meet current and future nursing needs.

Legislation affecting governmental assistance for children of parents with substance use: a policy analysis of social justice

There is legislation that withdraws governmental assistance where parents are using drugs. Social justice is an important consideration in any policy that modifies governmental assistance that benefits vulnerable children. The purpose of this policy analysis is to analyze identified legislation that effect governmental assistance for children in response to parents' substance misuse. A selective review of data-driven studies examined findings describing actual or potential effects on children of legislation targeting parental substance misuse. Challenges in design, processes, and implementation contribute to poor child outcomes. Identifiable constructs of social justice were missing in the reviewed legislation. Social injustice is a potential outcome for children when legislative intent focuses solely on addressing parental drug behaviors. Legislative alternatives to withdrawing support can address substance abuse while maintaining health promotion for these vulnerable children.
