Abstract
BACKGROUND Lymph node metastases in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) increase the risk for persistent and recurrent disease. Data on the predictive value of histopathological features of lymph node metastases, however, are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of known and new histopathological features of lymph node metastases in a well-defined cohort of PTC patients with clinically evident lymph node metastases. METHODS A total of 1042 lymph node metastases, derived from 129 PTC patients, were reexamined according to a predefined protocol and evaluated for diameter, extranodal extension, cystic changes, necrosis, calcifications, and the proportion of the lymph node taken up by tumor cells. Predictors for a failure to achieve a complete biochemical and structural response to treatment were determined. RESULTS The presence of more than 5 lymph node metastases was the only independent predictor for a failure to achieve a complete response to treatment (odds ratio [OR] 3.39 [95% CI, 1.57-7.33], P < .05). Diameter nor any of the other evaluated lymph node features were significantly associated with the response to treatment. CONCLUSIONS Detailed reexamination of lymph nodes revealed that only the presence of more than 5 lymph node metastases was an independent predictor of failure to achieve a complete response to treatment. No predictive value was found for other histopathological features, including the diameter of the lymph node metastases. These findings have the potential to improve risk stratification in patients with PTC and clinically evident lymph node metastases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In metastatic breast cancer (MBC), [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ([18F]FDG-PET/CT) can be used for staging. We evaluated the correlation between BC histopathological characteristics and [18F]FDG uptake in corresponding metastases. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with non-rapidly progressive MBC of all subtypes prospectively underwent a baseline histological metastasis biopsy and [18F]FDG-PET. Biopsies were assessed for estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (ER, PR, HER2); Ki-67; and histological subtype. [18F]FDG uptake was expressed as maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and results were expressed as geometric means. RESULTS Of 200 patients, 188 had evaluable metastasis biopsies, and 182 of these contained tumor. HER2 positivity and Ki-67 ≥ 20% were correlated with higher [18F]FDG uptake (estimated geometric mean SUVmax 10.0 and 8.8, respectively; p = 0.0064 and p = 0.014). [18F]FDG uptake was lowest in ER-positive/HER2-negative BC and highest in HER2-positive BC (geometric mean SUVmax 6.8 and 10.0, respectively; p = 0.0058). Although [18F]FDG uptake was lower in invasive lobular carcinoma (n = 31) than invasive carcinoma NST (n = 146) (estimated geometric mean SUVmax 5.8 versus 7.8; p = 0.014), the metastasis detection rate was similar. CONCLUSIONS [18F]FDG-PET is a powerful tool to detect metastases, including invasive lobular carcinoma. Although BC histopathological characteristics are related to [18F]FDG uptake, [18F]FDG-PET and biopsy remain complementary in MBC staging (NCT01957332).

Abstract
Breast fibroadenomas, common benign conditions, exhibit distinct clinical and histopathological features. This review highlights clinical presentation and histology correlations, providing insights for healthcare providers. Palpable masses, pain, and changes in breast appearance align with glandular and stromal components, emphasizing accurate diagnosis. Mammography, ultrasound, and MRI guide tailored treatment decisions. Challenges in differentiating atypical fibroadenomas highlight the need for meticulous histopathological evaluation. Clinical implications stress patient-centered care, shared decision-making, and ongoing follow-up. Future research focuses on genetic investigations and long-term studies. A multidisciplinary approach to breast fibroadenomas ensures comprehensive care for improved outcomes in both medical and emotional aspects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are relatively few reports on the histopathological characteristics of diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis of the mandible (DSOM), which is difficult to distinguish from chronic suppurative osteomyelitis (CSO) and craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (CFD). This study aimed to summarize and compare the histopathological characteristics of DSOM, CFD, and CSO. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections of patients with DSOM, CSO, and CFD at the Peking University Hospital of Stomatology from 2015 to 2020 were retrieved. The histopathological characteristics were summarized, including new bone formation, inflammatory cell infiltration, bone trabecular morphology, osteoclasts, sequestrum, bacterial mass, and calcified spherules, similar to cementicles. The histopathological characteristics of DSOM, CSO, and CFD were compared, and the results were statistically analyzed. RESULTS In total, 50, 13, and 10 patients with DSOM, CSO, and CFD were included in this study, respectively. In terms of new bone formation, both DSOM and CSO showed reactive bone formation (p = 1), whereas CFD mainly showed fiber osteogenesis (p < 0.001). The inflammatory cells of DSOM were mainly lymphocytes and plasma cells, whereas those of CSO were mainly lymphocytes and neutrophils (p < 0.001), and there was usually no inflammatory cell infiltration in the CFD specimens (p < 0.001). DSOM, CSO, and CFD showed irregular bone trabeculae (p = 0.045, p = 0.703) and active osteoclasts (p1 = 0.189, p2 = 0.256). DSOM showed a small amount of bacterial mass but no sequestrum; neither of which was found in CFD (p = 1, p = 1), but it was common in CSO (p = 0.011 and p = 0.025). DSOM and CSO showed smooth and regular basophilic lines (p = 0.308), whereas CFD showed a rough and irregular basophilic line (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The histopathological characteristics of the three diseases were partly similar, but there were evident differences. The main differences are the type of new bone formation, types and distribution of inflammatory cells, and presence of sequestrum and bacterial masses. These differences will help clinicians diagnose DSOM.

Abstract
Background: This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of sex-related characteristics of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), with special reference to its incidence, clinicopathological profile, overall survival, and treatment-related costs. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included all 1,279 CMM patients who were registered in 2015 in the Veneto Cancer Registry (a population-based registry including all 4,900,000 regional residents). The by-sex comparisons included tumor stage and site, histological subtype, and other clinical-pathological variables. A Cox regression analysis was used to test the association between sex and survival, adjusting for the main covariates. Treatment costs were calculated by linking patients with several administrative regional databases. Results: Age-specific incidence rates were significantly higher for men among people >50 years old. For men, the trunk was the most common primary site (59.3%), whereas for women the lower limbs (32.1%) were the most common primary site, followed by the trunk (31.8%), which was lower than for men (p < 0.001). At presentation, the frequency of early stage CMM was higher among women, who also featured a significantly lower risk of death (p = 0.016), after adjusting for covariates. Men also incurred higher costs for melanoma treatment in the first year after their diagnosis. Conclusions: Among younger adults, CMM was more common in women, whereas among older adults, it was more common in men. Sex also influences patients' histopathological characteristics at diagnosis. Women had better overall survival after adjusting for demographic, pathological, and clinical profiles. The costs of treatment were also lower for women with CMM.

Abstract
Vitamin D is an agent involved in bone and mineral homeostasis. It has been recognized as a potent immunomodulator. It has immune-enhancing properties, and it induces immune tolerance. Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to be related to the development of autoimmune disorders. Vitamin D deficiency has been observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and it has been shown to be related with disease activity. Vitamin D deficiency has also been found in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and it was shown to be related to disease activity and renal involvement. Vitamin D deficiency has also been observed in multiple sclerosis. Vitamin D has been found to act as a supplemental therapeutic agent in multiple sclerosis. Sjögren's syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease affecting the exocrine glands, known as an autoimmune epithelitis. The disease has a complex pathogenesis, requiring a genetic background, immune cell activation, and autoantibody production. The disease affects the exocrine glands, lacrimal, and salivary glands leading to ocular and oral dryness. Vitamin D levels have been measured in patients with Sjögren's syndrome and an association was observed between low vitamin D levels, peripheral neuropathy and the presence of lymphoma. In other cohorts, such as a Turkish cohort, vitamin D deficiency was observed in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. The aim is to measure serum vitamin D levels in consecutive patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome and investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels and the presence of immunologic markers, clinical, serological, and histopathological characteristics.

Abstract
Hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the lung (HAL) is an comparatively rare malignant tumor originating from the lung with shorter survival. HAL morphologically and pathologically exhibits hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)-like characteristics, while its clinical features resemble pulmonary adenocarcinoma. High concentration of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is often detected in the serum of HAL patients with no hepatic occupying lesion. Patients with AFP-negative HAL survive a few months longer than those with positive AFP test. HAL is a rare type of carcinoma, so there is a lack of systematic and extensive statistical research. The treatment strategy for HAL is similar to common lung adenocarcinoma. Complete surgical resection and adjuvant chemotherapy are the current major treatments for HAL patients. There are also a few of case reports suggesting that HAL patients may benefit from immunotherapy and targeted therapy. This review focuses on the clinical and pathological features, immunohistochemical staining characteristics, treatment and prognosis of HAL.

Abstract
Odontogenic carcinosarcoma is a very rare malignant odontogenic tumor, characterized by malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Studies have reported several cases of odontogenic carcinosarcoma, mainly in the upper and lower jaws, with malignant clinical manifestations. Herein, we present the case of a 58-year-old woman with odontogenic carcinosarcoma with dentinoid in the left maxilla. The invasion range was large, and the left maxillary molar was missing. Histology revealed odontogenic carcinosarcoma with bidirectional differentiation characteristics and comprising three components: malignant epithelium, malignant interstitium, and dentinoid. The patient subsequently underwent nasal endoscopic sinus tumor resection, and she recovered well after surgery. After a strict 4-year follow-up, to date, there are still no signs of disease or local recurrence. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of odontogenic carcinosarcoma with dentinoid. Our study describes the clinical, morphological, and immunohistochemical characteristics of this case, and distinguishes it from related diseases.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Current recommendations and treatment regimens in breast cancer are a reflection of its heterogeneity on multiple levels including histological subtypes, grading, molecular profiling, and numerous prognostic indices. Although based on extensive research, current guidelines are not explicit in the case of surgical specimens showing various degrees of mismatch between different parts of the same tumor and even more so between multicentric lesions. Synchronous breast cancer is the ideal prototype for studying inter- and intra-tumoral heterogeneity, therefore we envisaged that a study on patients with multicentric and multifocal lesions could contribute to the reshaping of the staging, prognosis, and treatment of breast malignancies. Material and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted between January 2013 and May 2017 on 235 patients diagnosed with breast cancer (BC) and surgically treated at Emergency University Hospital, Bucharest. Thirty-seven patients had multiple breast tumors and were eligible for assessment of the heterogeneity of their lesions. Results: 6 were multicentric and 31 multifocal. The number of foci varied from 2 to 11. We encountered numerous mismatches between the index and the secondary tumors, as follows: 3 cases (8.1%) with histopathological mismatch, 13 (35.1%) with different grades of differentiation, 11 (29.8%) with ER (Estrogen Receptors) status mismatch, 12 (32.4%) with PR (Progesterone Receptors) status mismatch, 8 (21.6%) with molecular phenotype mismatch, and 17 (45.9%) cases with variable Ki-67. After careful analysis of index and secondary tumors, apart from the mismatches reported above, we discovered that the secondary tumors were actually dominant in 5 cases (13.5%), and therefore at least those cases had to be reclassified/restaged, as the supplementary data commanded changes in the therapeutic decision. Conclusions: For synchronous breast tumors, the current Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) staging system ignores not only the histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the secondary foci, but also their size. When secondary lesions are more aggressive or their cumulative mass is significantly bigger than that of the index tumor, the treatment plan should be adapted accordingly. We believe that information obtained from examining secondary foci in synchronous breast cancer and assessment of the cumulative tumoral mass should be reflected in the final staging and definitive treatment. The clinical benefit of staging the patients based on the most aggressive tumor and the cumulative tumoral burden rather than according to the biggest single tumor, will avoid under-treatment in cases with multifocal/multicentric BC displaying intertumoral mismatch.

Abstract
Little is known about the histopathological characteristics that may differentiate early oral tongue cancer (OTSCC) between young and older patients. From a total of 311 cases diagnosed with clinically early-stage OTSCC at 6 institutions, only 42 patients were young patients were aged ≤45 years. For comparison, 42 patients >60 years old were matched for center of management, clinical stage and gender. We compared epithelial and stromal histopathologic parameters between the two groups. Most of the parameters were similar between the two groups, although the young patients appeared to have marginally higher intensity of tumor budding, histologic risk score, infiltrative pattern of invasion and tumor-stroma ratio. However, none of the factors showed significant difference when comparing the two groups. The histological parameters reflect mechanisms of invasive growth and tissue response to invasive growth, but not the etiological difference in OTSCC between young and older patients. Further investigations are necessary to compare the genetic background of early OTSCC in the two groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Colorectal laterally spreading tumors (LSTs) are widely recognized owing to their structural characteristics. This study aims to clarify the histopathological characteristics of large colorectal LSTs according to growth pattern. METHODS We studied 297 colorectal LSTs measuring ≥20 mm in diameter. The LSTs were classified into four types: granular homogenous type (LST-G-H), granular nodular mixed type (LST-G-M), non-granular flat elevated type (LST-NG-F), and non-granular pseudo-depressed type (LST-NG-PD). Retrospectively collected data were examined to compare the histopathological characteristics of LSTs according to the growth pattern. RESULTS LST-G-M lesions (142 lesions) were most common, followed by LST-NG-F (74 lesions), LST-G-H (61 lesions), and LST-NG-PD (20 lesions). The mean tumor diameter of LST-G lesions (38.5 ± 17.2 mm) was significantly greater than that of LST-NG lesions (26.3 ± 7.0 mm, P < 0.001). In particular, 45% of LST-G-M lesions were ≥40 mm in diameter. Adenomas accounted for 54% of LST-G-H lesions compared with only 10% of LST-NG-PD lesions. Pathological T1 carcinomas accounted for 55% of LST-NG-PD lesions and were not found among LST-G-H lesions. CONCLUSIONS The biological malignancy of colorectal LSTs differs considerably depending on the growth pattern even among large lesions and therefore should be considered when selecting treatment regimens.

Abstract
Background and Aim Although colorectal laterally spreading tumors (LSTs) can be classified into four subtypes, the histopathological characteristics are known to differ among these subtypes. We therefore performed a logistic regression analysis to determine whether the risk of pathological T1 cancer of large colorectal LSTs can be predicted based on factors such as endoscopic findings in a large group of patients enrolled in a multicenter study in Japan. Methods In the main study, we assessed 1236 colorectal adenomas or early cancers that were classified as LSTs measuring 20 mm or more in diameter and treated endoscopically. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine whether factors such as the subtype of LST could be used to predict the risk of pathological T1 cancer. A validation study of 356 large colorectal LSTs was conducted to confirm the validity of the results obtained in the main study. Results The locations and tumor diameter of the LSTs in the main study were found to differ significantly according to the LST subclassification (P < 0.001). The frequency of pathological T1 cancers was the highest at 36% of LST nongranular pseudodepressed type, followed by 14% of LST nongranular flat‐elevated type, 11% of LST granular nodular mixed type, and 3% of LST granular homogenous type lesions. The risk of pathological T1 cancer was significantly associated with LST subclassification and tumor diameter. The area under the curve (AUC) was high (0.743). In the validation study, the AUC was 0.573. Conclusions In patients with large colorectal LSTs resected endoscopically, the risk of pathological T1 cancer can be predicted on the basis of the LST subclassification and tumor diameter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to explore the correlations between the therapeutic effect of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and histopathological characteristics of excised uterine fibroids with different signal intensities as visualized on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS We collected 47 specimens of uterine fibroids after surgical resection and classified them into four groups according to preoperative T2-weighted MRI hypo-intense, isointense, heterogeneous intense and homogeneous hyper-intense. Then, specimens in each group were irradiated by HIFU with the same parameters and the necrotic tissue volume was calculated. The smooth muscle cell (SMC) count and collagen fiber content were quantitatively measured and compared between different groups. We analyzed the correlation between the necrotic tissue volume and SMC count and the collagen fiber content. RESULTS Necrotic tissue volume gradually decreased from the hypo-intense group to the homogeneous hyper-intense group (p = .008). The SMC count from the hypo-intense group to the homogeneous hyper-intense group was 215.6 ± 59.3, 237.0(89.5), 232.3 ± 72.5 and 330.5 ± 30.9, respectively; collagen fiber content was 0.65 ± 0.07, 0.64 ± 0.10, 0.53 ± 0.11 and 0.41 ± 0.06, respectively. Comparison among the four groups showed that SMC count progressively increased (p = .001) but collagen fiber content progressively decreased (p = .000) from the hypo-intense group to the homogeneous hyper-intense group. Correlation analysis showed that necrotic tissue volume was negatively correlated with SMC count (R = -0.488, p=.013) but positively correlated with collagen fiber content (R = 0.534, p = .005). CONCLUSIONS Differences in histopathological characteristics may be one of the reasons for different therapeutic effects of HIFU ablation on uterine fibroids with different signal intensities on T2-weighted MRI.

Abstract
The dramatic improvements in the growth rate and breast muscle size and yield in
broilers through the intensive genetic selection, and the improvement in
nutrition and management over the past 50 years have introduced serious
abnormalities that influenced the quality of breast meat. The abnormalities
include pale-soft-exudative (PSE) conditions, deep pectoral muscle (DPM)
myopathy, spaghetti meat (SM), white striping (WS), and woody breast (WB) that
have serious negative implications to the broiler meat industry. The incidences
of PSE and DPM have been known for several decades, and their prevalence,
etiology and economic impact have been well discussed. However, other
abnormalities such as SM, WS and WB conditions have been reported just for few
years although these conditions have been known for some time. The newly
emerging quality issues in broilers are mainly associated with the
Pectoralis major muscles, and the incidences have been
increased dramatically in some regions of the world in recent years. As high as
90% of the broilers are affected by the abnormalities, which are expected to
cause from $200 million to $1 billion economic losses to the U.S. poultry
industry per year. So, this review mainly discusses the histopathological
characteristics and biochemical changes in the breast muscles with the emphasis
on the newly emerging abnormalities (SM, WS, and WB) although other
abnormalities are also discussed. The impacts of the anomalies on the
nutritional, functional, mechanical and sensory quality of the meat and their
implications to the poultry industry are discussed.

Abstract
Actinic prurigo (AP) is an idiopathic photodermatosis; the initial manifestations usually occur during the first decades of life but can appear at any age. Cases are usually diagnosed late once the lesions have exacerbated; due to the extensive involvement of the vermilion border and the etiology, it has been confused with and related to a potentially malignant process. Syndecan-1 and E-cadherin were positive in the epidermis, with moderate-to-intense staining in 100% of samples. Ki67 and MCM3 were expressed in the lower third of the epidermis and showed greater immunolabeling in samples that contained lymphoid follicles (Ki 67: epidermis [17.7% ± 6.79%] and dermis [7.73% ± 6.69%]; MCM3: epidermis [22.92% ± 10.12%] and dermis [6.13% ± 6.27%]). In conclusión AP is a disease in which there is no evidence that the lesions are potentially cancerous. AP cheilitis should not be confused with actinic cheilitis because they are separate entities.

Abstract
A 28 years old man complained with swellen glymph nodes and mass in neck for 1 year.Physical examination shows painless subcutaneous swollen mass in neck.The level of eosinophil granulocyte count was higher than normal in the peripheral blood.The result of B mode ultrasonography shows left submandibular salivary gland were widely swollen and several swollen lymphnodes in neck.Pathological examination displays features of a large number of Lymphoid follicular hyperplasia,eosinophil granulocyte in filtration.Kimura's disease is a benign,rare,chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology,which affects subcutaneous tissues, lymph nodes and salivary glands.It is characterized by a triad of painless subcutaneous mass,increased eosinophilia in the peripheral blood and in tissues with marked increase in serum IgE.Treatments of Kimura's disease include glucocortieoid drug therapy,surgical resection and local radiotherapy.
