Recent Advances in Structured Catalytic Materials Development for Conversion of Liquid Hydrocarbons into Synthesis Gas for Fuel Cell Power Generators

The paper considers the current state of research and development of composite structured catalysts for the oxidative conversion of liquid hydrocarbons into synthesis gas for fuel cell feeding and gives more detailed information about recent advances in the Boreskov Institute of Catalysis. The main factors affecting the progress of the target reaction and side reactions leading to catalyst deactivation are discussed. The properties of the Rh/Ce_0.75Zr_0.25O₂/Al₂O₃/FeCrAl composite multifunctional catalyst for the conversion of diesel fuel into synthesis gas are described. The results of the catalyst testing and mathematical modeling of the process of diesel fuel steam-air conversion into synthesis gas are reported.

Direct Polyethylene Photoreforming into Exclusive Liquid Fuel over Charge-Asymmetrical Dual Sites under Mild Conditions

Direct polyethylene photoreforming to high-energy-density C₂ fuels under mild conditions is of great significance and still faces a huge challenge, which is partly attributed to the extreme instability of *CH₂CH₂ adsorbed on the traditional catalysts with single catalytic sites. Herein, charge-asymmetrical dual sites are designed to boost the adsorption of *CH₂CH₂ for direct polyethylene photoreforming into C₂ fuels under normal temperature and pressure. As a prototype, the synthetic Zr-doped CoFe₂O₄ quantum dots with charge-asymmetrical dual metal sites realize direct polyethylene photoreforming into acetic acid, with 100% selectivity of liquid fuel and the evolution rate of 1.10 mmol g^-1 h^-1, outperforming those of most previously reported photocatalysts under similar conditions. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectra, density-functional-theory calculations, and control experiments reveal the charge-asymmetrical Zr-Fe dual sites may act as the predominate catalytic sites, which can simultaneously bond with the *CH₂CH₂ intermediates for the following stepwise oxidation to form C₂ products.

High-Pressure CO Electroreduction at Silver Produces Ethanol and Propanol

Reducing CO₂ to long-chain carbon products is attractive considering such products are typically more valuable than shorter ones. However, the best electrocatalyst for making such products from CO₂ , copper, lacks selectivity. By studying alternate C₂₊ producing catalysts we can increase our mechanistic understanding, which is beneficial for improving catalyst performance. Therefore, we investigate CO reduction on silver, as density functional theory (DFT) results predict it to be good at forming ethanol. To address the current disagreement between DFT and experimental results (ethanol vs. no ethanol), we investigated CO reduction at higher surface coverage (by increasing pressure) to ascertain if desorption effects can explain the discrepancy. In terms of product trends, our results agree with the DFT-proposed acetaldehyde-like intermediate, yielding ethanol and propanol as C₂₊ products-making the CO₂ electrochemistry of silver very similar to that of copper at sufficiently high coverage.

Extractive desulfurization of liquid fuel using diamine-terminated polyethylene glycol as a very low vapour pressure and green molecular solvent

Removal of sulfur compounds from liquid fuel is one of the important issues in the field of energy and environment. Among the available methods, extractive desulfurization (EDS) is of great interest due to its convenient operating conditions. In this study, EDS performance of 4,7,10-trioxatridecane-1,13-diamine (TTD), a very low vapour pressure diamine-terminated oligomeric polyethylene glycol (PEG), was studied. Effect of the influencing factors, as well as multiple extraction, mutual solubility, reusability and regeneration of TTD were investigated. Results showed that the TTD/fuel volume ratio of 0.5 could extract benzothiophene, dibenzothiophene and dimethyl dibenzothiophene with the efficiencies 67%, 74% and 53%, respectively, in less than 1 min at ambient temperature. The distribution coefficient (KN ) value for removal of dibenzothiophene by TTD was 3.66 higher than that of PEG, and it is similar to KN values (approx. 4) for polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (as a modified PEG) and Lewis acid-containing ionic liquids. It was observed that spent TTD after five cycles could be regenerated using the back-extraction method. Also, deep EDS was achievable after three times extraction using fresh TTD. Finally, the extraction mechanism was studied using 1H-NMR. These observations, as well as very low vapour pressure and insignificant dependency of TTD on the initial S-concentration of fuel and temperature, make this extractant to be introduced as a valuable option for green and effective EDS.

Synthesis of liquid fuel via direct hydrogenation of CO2

Synthesis of liquid fuels (C₅₊ hydrocarbons) via CO₂ hydrogenation is very promising. Hydrogenation of CO₂ to liquid hydrocarbons usually proceeds through tandem catalysis of reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction to produce CO, and subsequent CO hydrogenation to hydrocarbons via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). CO₂ is a thermodynamically stable and chemically inert molecule, and RWGS reaction is endothermic and needs a higher temperature, whereas FTS reaction is exothermic and is thermodynamically favored at a lower temperature. Therefore, the reported technologies have some obvious drawbacks, such as high temperature, low selectivity, and use of complex catalysts. Herein we discovered that a simple Co₆/MnO_x nanocatalyst could efficiently catalyze CO₂ hydrogenation. The reaction proceeded at 200 °C, which is much lower than those reported so far. The selectivity of liquid hydrocarbon (C₅ to C₂₆, mostly n-paraffin) in total product could reach 53.2 C-mol%, which is among the highest reported to date. Interestingly, CO was hardly detectable during the reaction. The in situ Fourier transform infrared characterization and ¹³CO labeling test confirmed that the reaction was not via CO, accounting for the eminent catalytic results. This report represents significant progress in CO₂ chemistry and CO₂ transformation.

A Lithium/Polysulfide Battery with Dual-Working Mode Enabled by Liquid Fuel and Acrylate-Based Gel Polymer Electrolyte

The low density associated with low sulfur areal loading in the solid-state sulfur cathode of current Li-S batteries is an issue hindering the development of this type of battery. Polysulfide catholyte as a recyclable liquid fuel was proven to enhance both the energy density and power density of the battery. However, a critical barrier with this lithium (Li)/polysulfide battery is that the shuttle effect, which is the crossover of polysulfides and side deposition on the Li anode, becomes much more severe than that in conventional Li-S batteries with a solid-state sulfur cathode. In this work, we successfully applied an acrylate-based gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) to the Li/polysulfide system. The GPE layer can effectively block the detrimental diffusion of polysulfides and protect the Li metal from the side passivation reaction. Cathode-static batteries utilizing 2 M catholyte (areal sulfur loading of 6.4 mg cm^-2) present superior cycling stability (727.4 mAh g^-1 after 500 cycles at 0.2 C) and high rate capability (814 mAh g^-1 at 2 C) and power density (∼10 mW cm^-2), which also possess replaceable and encapsulated merits for mobile devices. In the cathode-flow mode, the Li/polysulfide system with catholyte supplied from an external tank demonstrates further improved power density (∼69 mW cm^-2) and stable cycling performance. This novel and simple Li/polysulfide system represents a significant advancement of high energy density sulfur-based batteries for future power sources.

Efficient and selective degradation of polyethylenes into liquid fuels and waxes under mild conditions

Polyethylene (PE) is the largest-volume synthetic polymer, and its chemical inertness makes its degradation by low-energy processes a challenging problem. We report a tandem catalytic cross alkane metathesis method for highly efficient degradation of polyethylenes under mild conditions. With the use of widely available, low-value, short alkanes (for example, petroleum ethers) as cross metathesis partners, different types of polyethylenes with various molecular weights undergo complete conversion into useful liquid fuels and waxes. This method shows excellent selectivity for linear alkane formation, and the degradation product distribution (liquid fuels versus waxes) can be controlled by the catalyst structure and reaction time. In addition, the catalysts are compatible with various polyolefin additives; therefore, common plastic wastes, such as postconsumer polyethylene bottles, bags, and films could be converted into valuable chemical feedstocks without any pretreatment.

Formate: an Energy Storage and Transport Bridge between Carbon Dioxide and a Formate Fuel Cell in a Single Device

We demonstrate the first device to our knowledge that uses a solar panel to power the electrochemical reduction of dissolved carbon dioxide (carbonate) into formate that is then used in the same device to operate a direct formate fuel cell (DFFC). The electrochemical reduction of carbonate is carried out on a Sn electrode in a reservoir that maintains a constant carbon balance between carbonate and formate. The electron-rich formate species is converted by the DFFC into electrical energy through electron release. The product of DFFC operation is the electron-deficient carbonate species that diffuses back to the reservoir bulk. It is possible to continuously charge the device using alternative energy (e.g., solar) to convert carbonate to formate for on-demand use in the DFFC; the intermittent nature of alternative energy makes this an attractive design. In this work, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept device that performs reduction of carbonate, storage of formate, and operation of a DFFC.
