High-Quality Solution-Processed Quasi-2D Perovskite for Low-Threshold Lasers

Spin-coated quasi-two-dimensional halide perovskite films, which exhibit superior optoelectronic properties and environmental stability, have recently been extensively studied for lasers. Crystallinity is of great importance for the laser performance. Although some parameters related to the spin-coating process have been studied, the in-depth understanding and effective control of the acceleration rate on two-dimensional perovskite crystallization during spin-coating are still unknown. Here we investigate the effect of solvent evaporation on the microstructure of the final perovskite films during the spin-coating process. The crystallization quality of the film can be significantly improved by controlling solvent evaporation. As a result, the prepared quasi-2D perovskite film exhibits a stimulated emission threshold (pump: 343 nm, 6 kHz, 290 fs) of 550 nm as low as 16.2 μJ/cm2. Transient absorption characterization shows that the radiative biexciton recombination time is reduced from 738.5 to 438.3 ps, benefiting from the improved crystallinity. The faster biexciton recombination significantly enhanced the photoluminescence efficiency, which is critical for population inversion. This work could contribute to the development of low-threshold lasers.

Water-Resistant Subwavelength Perovskite Lasing from Transparent Silica-Based Nanocavity

Great research efforts are devoted to exploring the miniaturization of chip-scale coherent light sources possessing excellent lasing performance. Despite the indispensable role in Si photonics, SiO2 is generally considered not contributing to the starting up and operation of integrated lasers. Here, this work demonstrates an extraordinary-performance subwavelength-scale perovskite vertical cavity laser with all-transparent SiO2 cavity, whose cavity is ultra-simple and composed of only two parallel SiO2 plates. By introducing a ligand-assisted thermally co-evaporation strategy, highly luminescent perovskite film with high reproducibility and excellent optical gain is grown directly on SiO2 . Benefitting from their high-refractive-index contrast, low-threshold, high-quality factor, and single-mode lasing is achieved in subwavelength range of ≈120 nm, and verified by long-range coherence distance (115.6 µm) and high linear polarization degree (82%). More importantly, the subwavelength perovskite laser device could operate in water for 20 days without any observable degradation, exhibiting ultra-stable water-resistant performance. These findings would provide a simple but robust and reliable strategy for the miniaturized on-chip lasers compatible with Si photonics.

Localized Bound Multiexcitons in Engineered Quasi-2D Perovskites Grains at Room Temperature for Efficient Lasers

Reducing the excitation threshold to minimize the Joule heating is critical for the realization of perovskite laser diodes. Although bound excitons are promising for low threshold laser, how to generate them at room temperature for laser applications is still unclear in quasi-2D perovskite-based devices. In this work, via engineering quasi-2D perovskite PEA₂ (CH₃ NH₃ )_{n -1} Pb_n Br_{3 n +1} microscopic grains by the anti-solvent method, room-temperature multiexciton radiative recombination is successfully demonstrated at a remarkably low pump density of 0.97 µJ cm^-2 , which is only one-fourth of that required in 2D CdSe nanosheets. In addition, the well-defined translational momentum in quasi-2D perovskite grains can restrict the Auger recombination which is detrimental to radiative emission. Furthermore, the quasi-2D perovskite grains are favorable for increasing binding energies of excitons and biexcitons and so as the related radiative recombination. Consequently, the prepared <n = 8> phase quasi-2D perovskite film renders a threshold of room-temperature stimulated emission as low as 13.7 µJ cm^-2 , reduced by 58.6% relative to the amorphous counterpart with larger grains. The findings in this work are expected to facilitate the development of solution-processable perovskite multiexcitonic laser diodes.

Between Care and Control: Examining Surveillance Practices in Harm Reduction

As harm reduction programs and services proliferate, people who use drugs (PWUD) are increasingly subjected to surveillance through the collection of their personal information, systematic observation, and other means. The data generated from these practices are frequently repurposed across various institutional sites for clinical, evaluative, epidemiological, and administrative uses. Rationales provided for increased surveillance include the more effective provision of care, service optimization, risk stratification, and efficiency in resource allocation. With this in mind, our reflective essay draws on empirical analysis of work within harm reduction services and movements to reflect critically on the impacts and implications of surveillance expansion. While we argue that many surveillance practices are not inherently problematic or harmful, the unchecked expansion of surveillance under a banner of health and harm reduction may contribute to decreased uptake of services, rationing and conditionalities tied to service access, the potential deepening of health disparities amongst some PWUD, and an overlay of health and criminal-legal systems. In this context, surveillance relies on the enlistment of a range of therapeutic actors and reflects the permeable boundary between care and control. We thus call for a broader critical dialogue within harm reduction on the problems and potential impacts posed by surveillance in service settings, the end to data sharing of health information with law enforcement and other criminal legal actors, and deference to the stated need among PWUD for meaningful anonymity when accessing harm reduction and health services.

Enhanced Amplified Spontaneous Emission in Quasi-2D Perovskite by Facilitating Energy Transfer

Despite the superior optoelectronic properties of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Ruddlesden-Popper halide perovskites, the inhomogeneous distribution of mixed phases result in inefficient energy transfer and multiple emission peaks. Herein, the insufficient energy funneling process at the high-energy phase is almost completely suppressed and the excitonic understanding of gain nature is studied in the energy funneling managed quasi-2D perovskite via introducing poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) additive. The energy transfer process is facilitated from 0.37 to 0.26 ps after introducing the PVP additive, accelerating the exciton accumulation in the emissive state, and increasing the ratio of the high-dimensional phase for enhancing radiative emission. The gain lifetime is promoted to be as fast as 28 ps to outcompete nonradiative recombination during the build-up of population inversion. Simultaneously, the net gain coefficient is increased by more than twofold that of the pristine perovskite film. Owing to the remarkable gain properties, room-temperature amplified spontaneous emission is realized with a low threshold of 11.3 μJ/cm2, 4 times lower than 43 μJ/cm2 of the pristine film. Our findings suggest that the PVP-treated quasi-2D perovskite shows great promise for high-performance laser devices.

Octagonal Quasicrystal Defect Mode Laser-Based PVK: Ir(ppy)3 Polymer Driven by Optical Pumping

Based on the conjugated complex PVK: Ir(ppy)₃, a green-emitting organic quasicrystal microcavity laser is demonstrated driven by optical pumping. The organic laser adopts a sandwich structure of DBR/organic gain membrane/output Ag-layer for the vertical oscillation and an octagonal quasi-crystal for in-plane light localization. The experimental results show that the single-mode lasing action is observed at 521 nm with an FWHM of 0.8 nm. The threshold of lasing is lowered to 0.181 μJ/cm².

Ultralow Threshold, Single-Mode InGaAs/GaAs Multiquantum Disk Nanowire Lasers

We present single-mode nanowire (NW) lasers with an ultralow threshold in the near-infrared spectral range. To ensure the single-mode operation, the NW diameter and length are reduced specifically to minimize the longitudinal and transverse modes of the NW cavity. Increased optical losses and reduced gain volume by the dimension reduction are compensated by an excellent NW morphology and InGaAs/GaAs multiquantum disks. At 5 K, a threshold low as 1.6 μJ/cm² per pulse is achieved with a resulting quality factor exceeding 6400. By further passivating the NW with an AlGaAs shell to suppress surface nonradiative recombination, single-mode lasing operation is obtained with a threshold of only 48 μJ/cm² per pulse at room temperature with a high characteristic temperature of 223 K and power output of ∼0.9 μW. These single-mode, ultralow threshold, high power output NW lasers are promising for the development of near-infrared nanoscale coherent light sources for integrated photonic circuits, sensing, and spectroscopy.

Symptoms Associated with Low Threshold Lead Poisoning Among Roadside and Organized Panel Beaters in Enugu Metropolis, Nigeria

BACKGROUND

There is no safe level of human exposure to lead (Pb). Detecting common early symptoms of low threshold Pb poisoning can help to prevent the damaging effects of higher doses and chronic low dose exposures. Panel beaters or auto body mechanics are exposed to Pb through their occupational duties.

OBJECTIVES

The present study aimed to determine common early symptoms associated with lower threshold Pb poisoning among roadside and organized panel beaters in Enugu Metropolis, Nigeria.

METHODS

This was a comparative cross-sectional study of 428 panel beaters in Enugu metropolis. A multi-stage sampling method was used to select 214 respondents each from the roadside and organized sectors. A semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used for data collection. Samples were collected under aseptic procedures. Blood Pb samples were extracted using the conventional wet acid digestion method and analyzed using a flame atomic absorption spectrometer (wavelength 283.3 nm). Comparative analysis was performed using the chi - square and Mann-Whitney U test. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05.

RESULTS

Median Pb levels were 3.0 ug/dL and 16.0 ug/dL among roadside and organized panel beaters, respectively, with a significant difference. Numbness of limbs (P = 0.010) and fatigue (χ² = 5.294, P = 0.023) were found to be associated with roadside panel beaters, while weakness (χ² = 6.185, P = 0.019) and fatigue (χ² = 4.206, P = 0.046) were associated with organized panel beaters.

CONCLUSIONS

Nonspecific constitutional symptoms were common early symptoms of Pb poisoning irrespective of workplace occupational practices. These symptoms will help in early detection and control of occupational lead exposures.

Role of the Exciton-Polariton in a Continuous-Wave Optically Pumped CsPbBr3 Perovskite Laser

Lead halide perovskites have emerged as excellent optical gain materials for solution-processable and flexible lasers. Recently, continuous-wave (CW) optically driven lasing was established in perovskite crystals; however, the mechanism of low-threshold operation is still disputed. In this study, CW-pumped lasing from one-dimensional CsPbBr₃ nanoribbons (NBs) with a threshold of ∼130 W cm^-2 is demonstrated, which can be ascribed to the large refractive index induced by the exciton-polariton (EP) effect. Increasing the temperature reduces the exciton fraction of EPs, which decreases the group and phase refractive indices and inhibits lasing above 100 K. Thermal management, including reducing the NB height to ∼120 ± 60 nm and adopting a high-thermal-conductivity sink, e.g., sapphire, is critical for CW-driven lasing, even at cryogenic temperatures. These results reveal the nature of ultralow-threshold lasing with CsPbBr₃ and provide insights into the construction of room-temperature CW and electrically driven perovskite macro/microlasers.

High-Quality Hexagonal Nonlayered CdS Nanoplatelets for Low-Threshold Whispering-Gallery-Mode Lasing

Low threshold micro/nanolasers have attracted extensive attention for wide applications in high-density storage and optical communication. However, constrained by quantum efficiency and crystalline quality, conventional semiconductor small-sized lasers are still subjected to a high lasing threshold. In this work, a low-threshold planar laser based on high-quality single-crystalline hexagonal CdS nanoplatelets (NPLs) using a self-limited epitaxial growth method is demonstrated. The as-grown CdS NPLs show multiple whispering-gallery-mode lasing at room temperature with a threshold of ≈0.6 µJ cm^-2 , which is the lowest value among reported CdS-based lasers. Through power-dependent lasing studies at 77 K, the lasing action is demonstrated to originate from a exciton-exciton scattering process. Furthermore, the edge length- and thickness-dependent lasing threshold studies reveal that the threshold is inversely proportional to the second power of lateral edge length while partially affected by vertical thickness, and the lasing modes can be sustained in NPLs as thin as 60 nm. The lowest threshold emerges with the thickness of ≈110 nm due to stronger energy confinement in the vertical Fabry-Pérot cavity. The results not only open up a new avenue to fabricate nonlayered material-based coherent light sources, but also advocate the promise of nonlayered semiconductor materials for the development of novel optoelectronic devices.

Strong Photonic-Band-Gap Effect on the Spontaneous Emission in 3D Lead Halide Perovskite Photonic Crystals

Stimulated emission in perovskite-embedded polymer opal structures is investigated. A polymer opal structure is filled with a perovskite, and perovskite photonic crystals are prepared. The spontaneous emission of the perovskite embedded in the polymer opal structures exhibits clear signatures of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) via gain modulation. The difference in refractive-index contrast between the perovskite and the polymer opal is large enough for retaining photonic-crystals properties. The photonic band gap has a strong effect on the fluorescence emission intensity and lifetime. The stimulated emission spectrum exhibits a narrow ASE rather than a wide fluorescence peak in the thin film.

Neural processing of itch

While considerable effort has been made to investigate the neural mechanisms of pain, much less effort has been devoted to itch, at least until recently. However, itch is now gaining increasing recognition as a widespread and costly medical and socioeconomic issue. This is accompanied by increasing interest in the underlying neural mechanisms of itch, which has become a vibrant and rapidly-advancing field of research. The goal of the present forefront review is to describe the recent progress that has been made in our understanding of itch mechanisms.

Neuronal Ca(V)1.3alpha(1) L-type channels activate at relatively hyperpolarized membrane potentials and are incompletely inhibited by dihydropyridines

L-type calcium channels regulate a diverse array of cellular functions within excitable cells. Of the four molecularly defined subclasses of L-type Ca channels, two are expressed ubiquitously in the mammalian nervous system (Ca(V)1.2alpha(1) and Ca(V)1.3alpha(1)). Despite diversity at the molecular level, neuronal L-type channels are generally assumed to be functionally and pharmacologically similar, i.e., high-voltage activated and highly sensitive to dihydropyridines. We now show that Ca(V)1.3alpha(1) L-type channels activate at membrane potentials approximately 25 mV more hyperpolarized, compared with Ca(V)1.2alpha(1). This unusually negative activation threshold for Ca(V)1.3alpha(1) channels is independent of the specific auxiliary subunits coexpressed, of alternative splicing in domains I-II, IVS3-IVS4, and the C terminus, and of the expression system. The use of high concentrations of extracellular divalent cations has possibly obscured the unique voltage-dependent properties of Ca(V)1.3alpha(1) in certain previous studies. We also demonstrate that Ca(V)1.3alpha(1) channels are pharmacologically distinct from Ca(V)1.2alpha(1). The IC(50) for nimodipine block of Ca(V)1.3alpha(1) L-type calcium channel currents is 2.7 +/- 0.3 microm, a value 20-fold higher than the concentration required to block Ca(V)1.2alpha(1). The relatively low sensitivity of the Ca(V)1.3alpha(1) subunit to inhibition by dihydropyridine is unaffected by alternative splicing in the IVS3-IVS4 linker. Our results suggest that functional and pharmacological criteria used commonly to distinguish among different Ca currents greatly underestimate the biological importance of L-type channels in cells expressing Ca(v)1.3alpha(1).
