Non-Covalent Functionalization of Graphene Oxide with POSS to Improve the Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Composites

Phenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is modified onto the GO surface by using the strong π-π coupling between a large number of benzene rings at the end of the phenyl POSS structure and the graphite structure in the GO sheet, realizing the non-covalent functionalization of GO (POSS-GO). The POSS-GO-reinforced EP (POSS-GO/EP) composite material is prepared using the casting molding process. The surface morphology of GO before and after modification and its peel dispersion in EP are examined. Furthermore, the mechanical properties, cross-sectional morphology, and reinforcement mechanism of POSS-GO/EP are thoroughly examined. The results show that the cage-like skeleton structure of POSS is embedded between the GO layers, increasing the spacing between the GO layers and leading to a steric hindrance effect, which effectively prevents their stacking and aggregation and improves the dispersion performance of GO. In particular, the 0.4 phr POSS-GO/EP sample shows the best mechanical properties. This is because, on the one hand, POSS-GO is uniformly dispersed in the EP matrix, which can more efficiently induce crack deflection and bifurcation and can also cause certain plastic deformations in the EP matrix. On the other hand, the POSS-GO/EP fracture cross-section with a stepped morphology of interlaced "canine teeth" shape is rougher and more uneven, leading to more complex crack propagation paths and greater energy consumption. Moreover, the mechanical meshing effect between the rough POSS-GO surface and the EP matrix is stronger, which is conducive to the transfer of interfacial stress and the strengthening and toughening effects of POSS-GO.

Functionalization of Graphene Derivatives with Conducting Polymers and Their Applications in Uric Acid Detection

In this article, we review recent progress concerning the development of sensorial platforms based on graphene derivatives and conducting polymers (CPs), alternatively deposited or co-deposited on the working electrode (usually a glassy carbon electrode; GCE) using a simple potentiostatic method (often cyclic voltammetry; CV), possibly followed by the deposition of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) on the electrode surface (ES). These materials have been successfully used to detect an extended range of biomolecules of clinical interest, such as uric acid (UA), dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA), adenine, guanine, and others. The most common method is electrochemical synthesis. In the composites, which are often combined with metallic NPs, the interaction between the graphene derivatives-including graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), or graphene quantum dots (GQDs)-and the CPs is usually governed by non-covalent functionalization through π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals (VW) forces. The functionalization of GO, RGO, or GQDs with CPs has been shown to speed up electron transfer during the oxidation process, thus improving the electrochemical response of the resulting sensor. The oxidation mechanism behind the electrochemical response of the sensor seems to involve a partial charge transfer (CT) from the analytes to graphene derivatives, due to the overlapping of π orbitals.

Amphiphilic Zinc Porphyrin Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Hybrids: Efficient Formation and Excited State Charge Transfer Studies

Herein, the microscopic and spectroscopic characterization of a novel non-covalent electron donor-acceptor system, in which three different metalloporphyrins (1, 2, and 3) play the dual role of light harvester and electron donor with SWCNTs as electron acceptor, is described. To this end, microscopy, that is, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) corroborate the formation of 1-SWCNT, 2-SWCNT, and 3-SWCNT. Spectroscopy by means of Raman, fluorescence, and transient absorption spectroscopy confirmed efficient charge-transfer interaction from photoexcited metalloporphyrins to SWCNTs in the ground and excited state of 1-SWCNT, 2-SWCNT, and 3-SWCNT. The complementary use of spectroelectrochemical and transient absorption measurements substantiates the formation of one-electron oxidized metalloporphyrins after photoexcitation. Multiwavelength global analysis provides insights into the charge-separation and recombination processes in 1-SWCNT, 2-SWCNT, and 3-SWCNT upon photoexcitation. Notably, both the charge-separation and recombination dynamics are fastest in 2-SWCNT. Importantly, the strongest interactions in the steady-state experiments are associated with the fastest excited state decay in the time-resolved measurements.

A Comparative Study on the Role of Polyvinylpyrrolidone Molecular Weight on the Functionalization of Various Carbon Nanotubes and Their Composites

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites filled with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) wrapped carbon nanotubes were prepared via a solution casting technique. The effect of the molecular weight (polymer chain length) of the PVP on the ability to wrap different nanotube structures and its impact towards nanotube dispersibility in the polymer matrix was explored. The study was conducted with PVP of four different molecular weights and nanotubes of three different structures. The composites that exhibit an effective nanotube dispersion lead to a nanotube network that facilitates improved thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties. It was observed that nanotubes of different structures exhibit stable dispersions in the polymer matrix though PVP functionalization of different molecular weights, but the key is achieving an effective nanotube dispersion at low PVP concentrations. This is observed in MWNT and AP-SWNT based composites with PVP of low molecular weight, leading to a thermal conductivity enhancement of 147% and 53%, respectively, while for P3-SWNT based composites, PVP of high molecular weight yields an enhancement of 25% in thermal conductivity compared to the non-functionalized CNT-PVDF composite.

A New Method for Dispersing Pristine Carbon Nanotubes Using Regularly Arranged S-Layer Proteins

Homogeneous and stable dispersions of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in aqueous solutions are imperative for a wide range of applications, especially in life and medical sciences. Various covalent and non-covalent approaches were published to separate the bundles into individual tubes. In this context, this work demonstrates the non-covalent modification and dispersion of pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) using two S-layer proteins, namely, SbpA from Lysinibacillus sphaericus CCM2177 and SbsB from Geobacillus stearothermophilus PV72/p2. Both the S-layer proteins coated the MWNTs completely. Furthermore, it was shown that SbpA can form caps at the ends of MWNTs. Reassembly experiments involving a mixture of both S-layer proteins in the same solution showed that the MWNTs were primarily coated with SbsB, whereas SbpA formed self-assembled layers. The dispersibility of the pristine nanotubes coated with SbpA was determined by zeta potential measurements (−24.4 +/− 0.6 mV, pH = 7). Finally, the SbpA-coated MWNTs were silicified with tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) using a mild biogenic approach. As expected, the thickness of the silica layer could be controlled by the reaction time and was 6.3 +/− 1.25 nm after 5 min and 25.0 +/− 5.9 nm after 15 min. Since S-layer proteins have already demonstrated their capability to bind (bio)molecules in dense packing or to act as catalytic sites in biomineralization processes, the successful coating of pristine MWNTs has great potential in the development of new materials, such as biosensor architectures.

Preparation of Ultrafiltration Membrane by Polyethylene Glycol Non-Covalent Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes: Application for HA Removal and Fouling Control

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) non-covalent-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) membrane were prepared by vacuum filtration. The dispersion and stability of MWCNT non-covalent functionalized with PEG were all improved. TEM characterization and XPS quantitative analysis proved that the use of PEG to non-covalent functionalize MWCNT was successful. SEM image analysis confirmed that the pore size of PEG–MWCNT membrane was more concentrated and distributed in a narrower range of diameter. Contact angle measurement demonstrated that PEG non-covalent functionalization greatly enhanced the hydrophilicity of MWCNT membranes. The results of pure water flux showed that the PEG–MWCNT membranes could be categorized into low pressure membrane. PEG-MWCNT membrane had a better effect on the removal of humic acid (HA) and a lower TMP growth rate compared with a commercial 0.01-μm PVDF ultrafiltration membrane. During the filtration of bovine serum albumin (BSA), the antifouling ability of PEG-MWCNT membranes were obviously better than the raw MWCNT membranes. The TMP recovery rate of PEG–MWCNT membrane after cross flushing was 79.4%, while that of raw MWCNT–_COOH and MWCNT membrane were only 14.9% and 28.3%, respectively. PEG non-covalent functionalization improved the antifouling ability of the raw MWCNT membranes and reduced the irreversible fouling, which effectively prolonged the service life of MWCNT membrane.

Application of multi-active center organic quinone molecular functionalized graphene in fully pseudocapacitive asymmetric supercapacitors

5, 7, 12, 14-pentacenetetrone (PT), polycyclic quinone derivatives, are rich in carbonyl, which were investigated as a novel organic electrode material for supercapacitors. PT with aπconjugated system, is a flat molecule, generating strongπ-πinteractions between molecules. PT molecules were uniformly fixed on conductive reduced graphene oxide (rGO) throughπ-πinteraction by one-step solvothermal method, forming a three-dimensional cross-linked PT@rGO hydrogel. This composite structure was conducive to reducing the charge transfer resistance and promoting the Faraday reaction of electrode, which achieved the superposition of electric double-layer capacitance and pseudocapacitance. Appropriate organic molecular loading can effectively improve electrochemical performance. The optimal PT@rGO electrode material displayed the specific capacitance of 433.2 F g^-1at 5 mV s^-1with an excellent rate capability in 1 mol l^-1H₂SO₄electrolyte. Finally, the fully pseudocapacitive asymmetric supercapacitor has been assembled by using PT@rGO as positive electrode and benz[a]anthracene-7,12-quinone (BAQ) modified rGO(BAQ/rGO)as negative electrode, which exhibited the good energy storage performance in a cell voltage of 1.8 V.

Fabrication, Functionalization, and Application of Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Polymer Composite: An Overview

A novel class of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based nanomaterials has been surging since 1991 due to their noticeable mechanical and electrical properties, as well as their good electron transport properties. This is evidence that the development of CNT-reinforced polymer composites could contribute in expanding many areas of use, from energy-related devices to structural components. As a promising material with a wide range of applications, their poor solubility in aqueous and organic solvents has hindered the utilizations of CNTs. The current state of research in CNTs-both single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-reinforced polymer composites-was reviewed in the context of the presently employed covalent and non-covalent functionalization. As such, this overview intends to provide a critical assessment of a surging class of composite materials and unveil the successful development associated with CNT-incorporated polymer composites. The mechanisms related to the mechanical, thermal, and electrical performance of CNT-reinforced polymer composites is also discussed. It is vital to understand how the addition of CNTs in a polymer composite alters the microstructure at the micro- and nano-scale, as well as how these modifications influence overall structural behavior, not only in its as fabricated form but also its functionalization techniques. The technological superiority gained with CNT addition to polymer composites may be advantageous, but scientific values are here to be critically explored for reliable, sustainable, and structural reliability in different industrial needs.

Nanocomposites Prepared from Carbon Nanotubes and the Transition Metal Dichalcogenides WS2 and MoS2 via Surfactant-Assisted Dispersions as Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reactions

Fuel cells are emerging devices as clean and renewable energy sources, provided their efficiency is increased. In this work, we prepared nanocomposites based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), namely WS₂ and MoS₂, and evaluated their performance as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), relevant to fuel cells. The one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) building blocks were initially exfoliated and non-covalently functionalized by surfactants of opposite charge in aqueous media (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide, TTAB, for the nanotubes and sodium cholate, SC, for the dichalcogenides), and thereafter, the three-dimensional (3D) MoS₂@MWNT and WS₂@MWNT composites were assembled via surfactant-mediated electrostatic interactions. The nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and structural differences were found. WS₂@MWNT and MoS₂@MWNT show moderate ORR performance with potential onsets of 0.71 and 0.73 V vs. RHE respectively, and diffusion-limiting current densities of -1.87 and -2.74 mA·cm^-2, respectively. Both materials present, however, better tolerance to methanol crossover when compared to Pt/C and good stability. Regarding OER performance, MoS₂@MWNT exhibits promising results, with η₁₀ and j_max of 0.55 V and 17.96 mA·cm^-2, respectively. The fabrication method presented here is cost-effective, robust and versatile, opening the doors for the optimization of electrocatalysts' performance.

Rheological and Morphological Properties of Non-Covalently Functionalized Graphene-Based Structural Epoxy Resins with Intrinsic Electrical Conductivity and Thermal Stability

In this paper, a non-covalent π–π interaction between graphene nanoparticles (G) and a pyrene-based molecule (py) has been successfully accomplished to give the functionalized nanofillers (G-py). The proposed modification has proven to be a winning solution aimed at safeguarding the graphene’s notable electronic properties, while promoting a more effective nanofiller dispersion attributable to a decrease in viscosity with consequent improvement of the rheological properties of the formulated nanocomposites filled with G-py. The electrical current maps of the G-py based epoxy composites, loaded with filler weight percentages both above and below the electric percolation threshold (EPT), were obtained by tunneling atomic force microscopy (TUNA) technique. The possibility to detect low currents also for the sample at lower concentration (0.1 wt%) confirms the good electrical performance of the nanocomposites and, consequently, the successful performed functionalization. The non-covalent modification significantly improves the thermal stability of the unfunctionalized G of about 70 °C, thus causing an increase in the composite oxidative thermostability since the evolution of CO₂ shifts to higher values. Moreover, non-covalent functionalization proved to be impactful in imparting an overall enhancement of the nanocomposite mechanical properties due to good bonding between graphene and epoxy matrix, also showing a greater roughness which is decisive in influencing the interface adhesion efficiency.

Photo-Induced Doping in a Graphene Field-Effect Transistor with Inkjet-Printed Organic Semiconducting Molecules

In this work, we report a novel method of maskless doping of a graphene channel in a field-effect transistor configuration by local inkjet printing of organic semiconducting molecules. The graphene-based transistor was fabricated via large-scale technology, allowing for upscaling electronic device fabrication and lowering the device's cost. The altering of the functionalization of graphene was performed through local inkjet printing of N,N'-Dihexyl-3,4,9,10-perylenedicarboximide (PDI-C6) semiconducting molecules' ink. We demonstrated the high resolution (about 50 µm) and accurate printing of organic ink on bare chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene. PDI-C6 forms nanocrystals onto the graphene's surface and transfers charges via π-π stacking to graphene. While the doping from organic molecules was compensated by oxygen molecules under normal conditions, we demonstrated the photoinduced current generation at the PDI-C6/graphene junction with ambient light, a 470 nm diode, and 532 nm laser sources. The local (in the scale of 1 µm) photoresponse of 0.5 A/W was demonstrated at a low laser power density. The methods we developed open the way for local functionalization of an on-chip array of graphene by inkjet printing of different semiconducting organic molecules for photonics and electronics.

Effects of Non-Covalent Functionalized Graphene Oxide with Hyperbranched Polyesters on Mechanical Properties and Mechanism of Epoxy Composites

In order to improve the interfacial properties of graphene oxide (GO) and epoxy resin (EP), hyperbranched polyesters with terminal carboxyl (HBP) non-covalently functionalized graphene oxide (HBP-GO) was achieved by strong π-π coupling between hyperbranched polyesters and GO nanosheets. The effects of non-covalent functionalization of GO on the dispersibility, wettability and interfacial properties were analyzed. The mechanical properties and enhancement mechanism of HBP-GO/EP composites were investigated. The results show that the hyperbranched polyesters is embedded in the GO layer due to its highly branched structure, which forms the steric hindrance effect between the GO nanosheets, effectively prevents the agglomeration of GO nanosheets, and significantly improved the dispersibility of GO. Simultaneously, the contact angle of HBP-GO with EP is reduced, the surface energy, interfacial energy and adhesion work are increased, then the wetting property of HBP-GO is significantly improved. The main toughening mechanism of HBP-GO is microcrack deflection induced by HBP-GO and plastic deformation of the EP matrix. In the microcrack propagation zones, HBP-GO may produce the pinning effect near the microcrack tips and change their stress state, resulting in microcrack deflection and bifurcation. So, the microcrack propagation path is more tortuous, which will consume much more fracture energy. Therefore, the mechanical properties of the HBP-GO/EP composites are greatly improved.

Noncovalent Functionalization of 2D Black Phosphorus with Fluorescent Boronic Derivatives of Pyrene for Probing and Modulating the Interaction with Molecular Oxygen

We studied the chemical-physical nature of interactions involved in the formation of adducts of two-dimensional black phosphorus (2D BP) with organoboron derivatives of a conjugated fluorescent molecule (pyrene). Time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy showed a stabilization effect of 2D BP on all derivatives, in particular for the adducts endowed with the boronic functionalities. Also, a stronger modulation of the fluorescence decay with oxygen was registered for one of the adducts compared to the corresponding organoboron derivative alone. Nuclear magnetic resonance experiments in suspension and density functional theory simulations confirmed that only noncovalent interactions were involved in the formation of the adducts. The energetic gain in their formation arises from the interaction of P atoms with both C atoms of the pyrene core and the B atom of the boronic functionalities, with a stronger contribution from the ester with respect to the acid one. The interaction results in the lowering of the band gap of 2D BP by around 0.10 eV. Furthermore, we demonstrated through Raman spectroscopy an increased stability toward oxidation in air of 2D BP in the adducts in the solid state (more than 6 months). The modification of the electronic structure at the interface between 2D BP and a conjugated organic molecule through noncovalent stabilizing interactions mediated by the B atom is particularly appealing in view of creating heterojunctions for optoelectronic, photonic, and chemical sensing applications.

Stereocomplexation of Poly(Lactic Acid)s on Graphite Nanoplatelets: From Functionalized Nanoparticles to Self-assembled Nanostructures

The control of nanostructuration of graphene and graphene related materials (GRM) into self-assembled structures is strictly related to the nanoflakes chemical functionalization, which may be obtained via covalent grafting of non-covalent interactions, mostly exploiting π-stacking. As the non-covalent functionalization does not affect the sp2 carbon structure, this is often exploited to preserve the thermal and electrical properties of the GRM and it is a well-known route to tailor the interaction between GRM and organic media. In this work, non-covalent functionalization of graphite nanoplatelets (GnP) was carried out with ad-hoc synthesized pyrene-terminated oligomers of polylactic acid (PLA), aiming at the modification of GnP nanopapers thermal properties. PLA was selected based on the possibility to self-assemble in crystalline domains via stereocomplexation of complementary poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) enantiomers. Pyrene-initiated PLLA and PDLA were indeed demonstrated to anchor to the GnP surface. Calorimetric and X-ray diffraction investigations highlighted the enantiomeric PLAs adsorbed on the surface of the nanoplatelets self-organize to produce highly crystalline stereocomplex domains. Most importantly, PLLA/PDLA stereocomplexation delivered a significantly higher efficiency in nanopapers heat transfer, in particular through the thickness of the nanopaper. This is explained by a thermal bridging effect of crystalline domains between overlapped GnP, promoting heat transfer across the nanoparticles contacts. This work demonstrates the possibility to enhance the physical properties of contacts within a percolating network of GRM via the self-assembly of macromolecules and opens a new way for the engineering of GRM-based nanostructures.

Non-Covalent Functionalization of Carbon Nanotubes for Electrochemical Biosensor Development

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely studied and used for the construction of electrochemical biosensors owing to their small size, cylindrical shape, large surface-to-volume ratio, high conductivity and good biocompatibility. In electrochemical biosensors, CNTs serve a dual purpose: they act as immobilization support for biomolecules as well as provide the necessary electrical conductivity for electrochemical transduction. The ability of a recognition molecule to detect the analyte is highly dependent on the type of immobilization used for the attachment of the biomolecule to the CNT surface, a process also known as biofunctionalization. A variety of biofunctionalization methods have been studied and reported including physical adsorption, covalent cross-linking, polymer encapsulation etc. Each method carries its own advantages and limitations. In this review we provide a comprehensive review of non-covalent functionalization of carbon nanotubes with a variety of biomolecules for the development of electrochemical biosensors. This method of immobilization is increasingly being used in bioelectrode development using enzymes for biosensor and biofuel cell applications.

Alginic Acid-Aided Dispersion of Carbon Nanotubes, Graphene, and Boron Nitride Nanomaterials for Microbial Toxicity Testing

Robust evaluation of potential environmental and health risks of carbonaceous and boron nitride nanomaterials (NMs) is imperative. However, significant agglomeration of pristine carbonaceous and boron nitride NMs due to strong van der Waals forces renders them not suitable for direct toxicity testing in aqueous media. Here, the natural polysaccharide alginic acid (AA) was used as a nontoxic, environmentally relevant dispersant with defined composition to disperse seven types of carbonaceous and boron nitride NMs, including multiwall carbon nanotubes, graphene, boron nitride nanotubes, and hexagonal boron nitride flakes, with various physicochemical characteristics. AA’s biocompatibility was confirmed by examining AA effects on viability and growth of two model microorganisms (the protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila and the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Using 400 mg·L⁻¹ AA, comparably stable NM (200 mg·L⁻¹) stock dispersions were obtained by 30-min probe ultrasonication. AA non-covalently interacted with NM surfaces and improved the dispersibility of NMs in water. The dispersion stability varied with NM morphology and size rather than chemistry. The optimized dispersion protocol established here can facilitate preparing homogeneous NM dispersions for reliable exposures during microbial toxicity testing, contributing to improved reproducibility of toxicity results.

Supramolecular Approaches to Graphene: From Self-Assembly to Molecule-Assisted Liquid-Phase Exfoliation

Graphene, a one-atom thick two-dimensional (2D) material, is at the core of an ever-growing research effort due to its combination of unique mechanical, thermal, optical and electrical properties. Two strategies are being pursued for the graphene production: the bottom-up and the top-down. The former relies on the use of covalent chemistry approaches on properly designed molecular building blocks undergoing chemical reaction to form 2D covalent networks. The latter occurs via exfoliation of bulk graphite into individual graphene sheets. Amongst the various types of exfoliations exploited so far, ultrasound-induced liquid-phase exfoliation (UILPE) is an attractive strategy, being extremely versatile, up-scalable and applicable to a variety of environments. In this review, we highlight the recent developments that have led to successful non-covalent functionalization of graphene and how the latter can be exploited to promote the process of molecule-assisted UILPE of graphite. The functionalization of graphene with non-covalently interacting molecules, both in dispersions as well as in dry films, represents a promising and modular approach to tune various physical and chemical properties of graphene, eventually conferring to such a 2D system a multifunctional nature.

Non-covalent polymer wrapping of carbon nanotubes and the role of wrapped polymers as functional dispersants

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been recognized as a promising material in a wide range of applications from biotechnology to energy-related devices. However, the poor solubility in aqueous and organic solvents hindered the applications of CNTs. As studies have progressed, the methodology for CNT dispersion was established. In this methodology, the key issue is to covalently or non-covalently functionalize the surfaces of the CNTs with a dispersant. Among the various types of dispersions, polymer wrapping through non-covalent interactions is attractive in terms of the stability and homogeneity of the functionalization. Recently, by taking advantage of their stability, the wrapped-polymers have been utilized to support and/or reinforce the unique functionality of the CNTs, leading to the development of high-performance devices. In this review, various polymer wrapping approaches, together with the applications of the polymer-wrapped CNTs, are summarized.

Non-covalent and reversible functionalization of carbon nanotubes

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proposed and actively explored as multipurpose innovative nanoscaffolds for applications in fields such as material science, drug delivery and diagnostic applications. Their versatile physicochemical features are nonetheless limited by their scarce solubilization in both aqueous and organic solvents. In order to overcome this drawback CNTs can be easily non-covalently functionalized with different dispersants. In the present review we focus on the peculiar hydrophobic character of pristine CNTs that prevent them to easily disperse in organic solvents. We report some interesting examples of CNTs dispersants with the aim to highlight the essential features a molecule should possess in order to act as a good carbon nanotube dispersant both in water and in organic solvents. The review pinpoints also a few examples of dispersant design. The last section is devoted to the exploitation of the major quality of non-covalent functionalization that is its reversibility and the possibility to obtain stimuli-responsive precipitation or dispersion of CNTs.

Pyrene-POSS nanohybrid as a dispersant for carbon nanotubes in solvents of various polarities: its synthesis and application in the preparation of a composite membrane

In this study we report the preparation of nanohybrid dispersant molecules based on pyrene and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes for non-covalent functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The prepared dispersant improves the dispersion of MWCNTs in organic solvents with very different polarities such as tetrahydrofuran, toluene, and n-hexane. The functionalized MWCNTs were used to introduce conductivity into polydimethylsiloxane membranes which can be used for electrostatic discharge applications.
