On-Surface Synthesis of Polyphenylene Wires Comprising Rigid Aliphatic Bicyclo[1.1.1]Pentane Isolator Units

Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) motifs are of growing importance to the pharmaceutical industry as sp3-rich bioisosteres of benzene rings and as molecular tectons in materials science. Herein we explore the behavior of 1,3-disubstituted BCP moieties on metal surfaces by combining low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy / non-contact atomic force microscopy studies with density functional theory modeling. We examine the configuration of individual BCP-containing precursors on Au(111), their supramolecular assembly and thermally activated dehalogenative coupling reactions, affording polymeric chains with incorporated electronically isolating units. Our studies not only provide the first sub-molecular insights of the BCP scaffold behavior on surfaces, but also extend the potential application of BCP derivatives towards integration in custom-designed surface architectures.

Highly Stereospecific On-Surface Dimerization into Bishelicenes: Topochemical Ullmann Coupling of Bromohelicene on Au(111)

The on-surface dimerization into bis(hexahelicene) on a gold(111) surface has been studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and time-of-flight secondary mass spectrometry. C-C Ullmann coupling of (rac)-2-bromo-hexahelicene leads to formation of the (M,M)- and (P,P)- diastereomers of 2,2'-bis(hexahelicene), whilst formation of the (M,P)-diastereomer is not observed. Upon cooling, the bis(hexahelicene) aggregates into an ordered two-dimensional lattice with partly randomly distributed enantiomers. The highly specific diastereomeric coupling is explained by the surface alignment of educt in combination with the strong steric overcrowding in a possible surface-confined (M,P)-product.

Highly Selective On-Surface Reactions of Aryl Propiolic Acids via Decarboxylative Coupling

Aryl propiolic acids are introduced as a new class of monomers in the field of on-surface chemistry to build up poly(arylenebutadiynylenes) through decarboxylative Glaser coupling. As compared to aryl alkynes that are routinely used in the on-surface Glaser coupling, it is found that the decarboxylative coupling occurs at slightly lower temperature and with excellent selectivity. Activation occurs through decarboxylation for the propiolic acids, whereas the classical Glaser coupling is achieved through alkyne CH activation, and this process shows poor selectivity. The efficiency of the decarboxylative coupling is documented by the successful polymerization of bis(propiolic acids) as monomers. It is also found that the new activation mode is compatible with aryl bromide functionalities, which allows the formation of unsymmetric metal-organic polymers on the surface by chemoselective sequential reactions. All transformations are analyzed by a scanning tunneling microscope and are further studied by density functional theory calculations.

Anchoring and Reacting On-Surface to Achieve Programmability

On-surface synthesis has developed into a modern method to fabricate low-dimensional molecular nanostructures with atomic precision. It impresses the chemistry community mostly via its simplicity, selectivity, and programmability during the synthesis. However, an insufficient mechanistic understanding of on-surface reactions and the discriminations in methodologies block it out from the conventional cognition of reaction and catalysis, which inhibits the extensive implication of on-surface synthesis. In this Perspective, we summarize the empirical paradigms of conceptually appealing programmability in on-surface synthesis. We endeavor to deliver the message that the impressive programmability is related to chemical heterogeneity which can also be coded at the molecular level and deciphered by the catalytic surfaces in varying chemical environments as specific chemical selectivity. With the assistance of structure-sensitive techniques, it is possible to recognize the chemical heterogeneity on surfaces to provide insight into the programmable on-surface construction of molecular nanoarchitectures and to reshape the correlation between the mechanistic understanding in on-surface synthesis and conventional chemistry.

On-Surface Formation of Cyano-Vinylene Linked Chains by Knoevenagel Condensation

The rapid development of on‐surface synthesis provides a unique approach toward the formation of carbon‐based nanostructures with designed properties. Herein, we present the on‐surface formation of CN‐substituted phenylene vinylene chains on the Au(111) surface, thermally induced by annealing the substrate stepwise at temperatures between 220 °C and 240 °C. The reaction is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory. Supported by the calculated reaction pathway, we assign the observed chain formation to a Knoevenagel condensation between an aldehyde and a methylene nitrile substituent.

Unbalanced 2D Chiral Crystallization of Pentahelicene Propellers and Their Planarization into Nanographenes

The chiral self-assembly of trispentahelicene propellers on a gold surface has been investigated in ultrahigh vacuum by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. The trispentahelicene propellers aggregate into mirror domains with an enantiomeric ratio of 2 : 1. Thermally induced cyclodehydrogenation leads to planarization into nanographenes, which self-assemble into closed-packed layers with two different azimuths. Further treatment induces in part dimerization and trimerization by intermolecular cyclodehydrogenation.

On-Surface Synthesis of One-Dimensional Coordination Polymers with Tailored Magnetic Anisotropy

One-dimensional (1D) metalloporphyrin polymers can exhibit magnetism, depending on the central metal ion and the surrounding ligand field. The possibility of tailoring the magnetic signal in such nanostructures is highly desirable for potential spintronic devices. We present low-temperature (4.2 K) scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (LT-STM/STS) in combination with high-resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM) and a density functional theory (DFT) study of a two-step synthetic protocol to grow a robust Fe-porphyrin-based 1D polymer on-surface and to tune its magnetic properties. A thermally assisted Ullmann-like coupling reaction of Fe(III)diphenyl-bromine-porphyrin (2BrFeDPP-Cl) on Au(111) in ultra-high vacuum results in long (up to 50 nm) 1D metal-organic wires with regularly distributed magnetic and (electronically) independent porphyrins units, as confirmed by STM images. Thermally controlled C-H bond activation leads to conformational changes in the porphyrin units, which results in molecular planarization steered by 2D surface confinement, as confirmed by high-resolution AFM images. Spin-flip STS images in combination with DFT self-consistent spin-orbit coupling calculations of porphyrin units with different structural conformations reveal that the magnetic anisotropy of the triplet ground state of the central Fe ion units drops down substantially upon intramolecular rearrangements. These results point out to new opportunities for realizing and studying well-defined 1D organic magnets on surfaces and demonstrate the feasibility of tailoring their magnetic properties.

Building Tailored Interfaces through Covalent Coupling Reactions at Layers Grafted from Aryldiazonium Salts

Aryldiazonium ions are widely used reagents for surface modification. Attractive aspects of their use include wide substrate compatibility (ranging from plastics to carbons to metals and metal oxides), formation of stable covalent bonding to the substrate, simplicity of modification methods that are compatible with organic and aqueous solvents, and the commercial availability of many aniline precursors with a straightforward conversion to the active reagent. Importantly, the strong bonding of the modifying layer to the surface makes the method ideally suited to further on-surface (postfunctionalization) chemistry. After an initial grafting from a suitable aryldiazonium ion to give an anchor layer, a target species can be coupled to the layer, hugely expanding the range of species that can be immobilized. This strategy has been widely employed to prepare materials for numerous applications including chemical sensors, biosensors, catalysis, optoelectronics, composite materials, and energy conversion and storage. In this Review our goal is first to summarize how a target species with a particular functional group may be covalently coupled to an appropriate anchor layer. We then review applications of the resulting materials.

On-Surface Hydrogenation of Buckybowls: From Curved Aromatic Molecules to Planar Non-Kekulé Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Functionalization of surfaces with derivatives of Buckminsterfullerene fragment molecules seems to be a promising approach toward bottom-up fabrication of carbon nanotube modified electrode surfaces. The modification of a Cu(100) surface with molecules of the buckybowl pentaindenocorannulene has been studied by means of scanning tunneling microscopy, carbon monoxide-modified noncontact atomic force microscopy, time-of-flight secondary mass spectrometry, and quantum chemical calculations. Two different adsorbate modes are identified, in which the majority is oriented such that the bowl cavity points away from the surface and the convex side is partially immersed into a four-atom vacancy in the Cu(100) surface. A minority is oriented such that the convex side points away from the surface with the five benzo tabs oriented basically parallel to the surface. Thermal annealing leads to hydrogenation and planarization of the molecules in two steps under specific C-C bond cleavage. The benzo tabs of the convex side up species serve as a hydrogen source. The final product has an open-shell electron structure that is quenched on the surface.

Photochemistry Highlights on On-Surface Synthesis

On-surface chemistry is a promising way to achieve the bottom-up construction of covalently-bonded molecular precursors into extended atomically-precise polymers adsorbed on surfaces. These polymers exhibit unprecedented physical or chemical properties which are of great interest for various potential applications. These nanostructures were mainly obtained in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) on noble metal single-crystal surfaces by thermal annealing as stimulus to provoke the polymerization with a catalytic role of the surface adatoms. Nevertheless, photons are also a powerful source of energy to induce the formation of covalent architectures, even if it is less-used on surfaces than in solution. In this minireview, we discuss the photo-induced on-surface polymerization from the basic mechanisms of photochemistry to the formation of extended polymers on different kinds of surfaces, which are characterized by scanning probe microscopies.

Fingerprints of sp¹ Hybridized C in the Near-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectra of Surface-Grown Materials

Carbon structures comprising sp 1 chains (e.g., polyynes or cumulenes) can be synthesized by exploiting on-surface chemistry and molecular self-assembly of organic precursors, opening to the use of the full experimental and theoretical surface-science toolbox for their characterization. In particular, polarized near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) can be used to determine molecular adsorption angles and is here also suggested as a probe to discriminate sp 1 /sp 2 character in the structures. We present an ab initio study of the polarized NEXAFS spectrum of model and real sp 1 /sp 2 materials. Calculations are performed within density functional theory with plane waves and pseudopotentials, and spectra are computed by core-excited C potentials. We evaluate the dichroism in the spectrum for ideal carbynes and highlight the main differences relative to typical sp 2 systems. We then consider a mixed polymer alternating sp 1 C 4 units with sp 2 biphenyl groups, recently synthesized on Au(111), as well as other linear structures and two-dimensional networks, pointing out a spectral line shape specifically due to the the presence of linear C chains. Our study suggests that the measurements of polarized NEXAFS spectra could be used to distinctly fingerprint the presence of sp 1 hybridization in surface-grown C structures.

On-Surface Oligomerization of Self-Terminating Molecular Chains for the Design of Spintronic Devices

Molecular spintronics is currently attracting a lot of attention due to its great advantages over traditional electronics. A variety of self-assembled molecule-based devices are under development, but studies regarding the reliability of the growth process remain rare. Here, we present a method to control the length of molecular spintronic chains and to make their terminations chemically inert, thereby suppressing uncontrolled coupling to surface defects. The temperature evolution of chain formation was followed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to determine optimal growth conditions. The final structures of the chains were then studied, using scanning tunneling microscopy, as a function of oligomerization conditions. We find that short chains are readily synthesized with high yields and that long chains, even exceeding 70mers, can be realized under optimized growth parameters, albeit with reduced yields.

Decacene: On-Surface Generation

Acenes are intriguing molecules with unique electronic properties. The difficulties in their preparation owing to low stability under ambient conditions are apparent because successful syntheses of long unsubstituted acenes are still scarce, in spite of the great attention they have attracted. Only unsubstituted acenes up to heptacene have been isolated in bulk, with nonacene being the largest acene detected to date. Herein we use on-surface assisted reduction of tetraepoxy decacene precursors on Au(111) as the key step to generate unprecedented decacene which is visualized and its electronic resonances studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS).

On-Surface Synthesis and Characterization of 9-Atom Wide Armchair Graphene Nanoribbons

The bottom-up approach to synthesize graphene nanoribbons strives not only to introduce a band gap into the electronic structure of graphene but also to accurately tune its value by designing both the width and edge structure of the ribbons with atomic precision. We report the synthesis of an armchair graphene nanoribbon with a width of nine carbon atoms on Au(111) through surface-assisted aryl-aryl coupling and subsequent cyclodehydrogenation of a properly chosen molecular precursor. By combining high-resolution atomic force microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the atomic structure of the fabricated ribbons is exactly as designed. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and Fourier-transformed scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveal an electronic band gap of 1.4 eV and effective masses of ≈0.1 m_e for both electrons and holes, constituting a substantial improvement over previous efforts toward the development of transistor applications. We use ab initio calculations to gain insight into the dependence of the Raman spectra on excitation wavelength as well as to rationalize the symmetry-dependent contribution of the ribbons' electronic states to the tunneling current. We propose a simple rule for the visibility of frontier electronic bands of armchair graphene nanoribbons in scanning tunneling spectroscopy.

Structural Variation in Surface-Supported Synthesis by Adjusting the Stoichiometric Ratio of the Reactants

Surface-supported coupling reactions between 1,3,5-tris(4-formylphenyl)benzene and aromatic amines have been investigated on Au(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. Upon annealing to moderate temperatures, various products, involving the discrete oligomers and the surface covalent organic frameworks, are obtained through thermal-triggered on-surface chemical reactions. We conclude from the systematic experiments that the stoichiometric composition of the reactants is vital to the surface reaction products, which is rarely reported so far. With this knowledge, we have successfully prepared two-dimensional covalently bonded networks by optimizing the stoichiometric proportions of the reaction precursors.
