Phosphinous Acid-Phosphinito Tetra-Icosahedral Au52 Nanoclusters for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

While the formation of superatomic nanoclusters by the three-dimensional assembly of icosahedral units was predicted in 1987, the synthesis and structural determination of such clusters have proven to be incredibly challenging. Herein, we employ a mixed-ligand strategy to prepare phosphinous acid-phosphinito gold nanocluster Au₅₂(HOPPh₂)₈(OPPh₂)₄(TBBT)₁₆ with a tetra-icosahedral kernel. Unlike expected, each icosahedral Au₁₃ unit shares one vertex gold atom with two adjacent units, resulting in a "puckered" ring shape with a nuclearity of 48 in the kernel. The phosphinous acid-phosphinito ligand set, which consists of two phosphinous acids and one phosphinito motif, has strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds; the π-π stacking interactions between the phosphorus- and sulfur-based ligands provide additional stabilization to the kernel. Highly stable Au₅₂(HOPPh₂)₈(OPPh₂)₄(TBBT)₁₆ serves as an effective electrocatalyst in the oxygen reduction reaction. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the phosphinous acid-phosphinito ligands provide the most active sites in the electrochemical catalysis, with O* formation being the rate-determining step.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Analogues of Nucleophilic Phosphinidene Transition Metal Complexes

Chloride abstraction from the complexes [(η6 -p-cymene){(IDipp)P}MCl] (2 a, M=Ru; 2 b, M=Os) and [(η5 -C5 Me5 ){(IDipp)P}IrCl] (3 b, IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) with sodium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (NaBArF ) in the presence of trimethylphosphine (PMe3 ), 1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazolin-2-ylidene (Me IMe) or carbon monoxide (CO) afforded the complexes [(η6 -p-cymene){(IDipp)P}M(PMe3 )]BArF ] (4 a, M=Ru; 4 b, M=Os), [(η6 -p-cymene){(IDipp)P}Os(Me IMe)]BArF ] (5) and [(η5 -C5 Me5 ){(IDipp)P}IrL][BArF ] (6, L=PMe3 ; 7, L=Me IMe; 8, L=CO). These cationic N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphinidene complexes feature very similar structural and spectroscopic properties as prototypic nucleophilic arylphosphinidene complexes such as low-field 31 P NMR resonances and short metal-phosphorus double bonds. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the metal-phosphorus bond can be described in terms of an interaction between a triplet [(IDipp)P]+ cation and a triplet metal complex fragment ligand with highly covalent σ- and π-contributions. Crystals of the C-H activated complex 9 were isolated from solutions containing the PMe3 complex, and its formation can be rationalized by PMe3 dissociation and formation of a putative 16-electron intermediate [(η5 -C5 Me5 )Ir{P(IDipp)}I][BArF ], which undergoes C-H activation at one of the Dipp isopropyl groups and addition along the iridium-phosphorus bond to afford an unusual η3 -benzyl coordination mode.

P-P Condensation and P-N/P-P Bond Metathesis: Facile Synthesis of Cationic Tri- and Tetraphosphanes

[LC R P((PhP)2 C2 H4 )][OTf] (4 a,b[OTf]) and [LC iPr P(PPh2 )2 ][OTf] (5 b[OTf]) were prepared from the reaction of imidazoliumyl-substituted dipyrazolylphosphane triflate salts [LC R P(pyr)2 ][OTf] (3 a,b[OTf]; a: R=Me, b=iPr; LC R =1,3-dialkyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-yl; pyr=3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl) with the secondary phosphanes PhP(H)C2 H4 P(H)Ph) and Ph2 PH. A stepwise double P-N/P-P bond metathesis to catena-tetraphosphane-2,3-diium triflate salt [(Ph2 P)2 (LC Me P)2 ][OTf]2 (7 a[OTf]2 ) is observed when reacting 3 a[OTf] with diphosphane P2 Ph4 . The coordination ability of 5 b[OTf] was probed with selected coinage metal salts [Cu(CH3 CN)4 ]OTf, AgOTf and AuCl(tht) (tht=tetrahydrothiophene). For AuCl(tht), the helical complex [{(Ph2 PPLC iPr )Au}4 ][OTf]4 (9[OTf]4 ) was unexpectedly formed as a result of a chloride-induced P-P bond cleavage. The weakly coordinating triflate anion enables the formation of the expected copper(I) and silver(I) complexes [(5 b)M(CH3 CN)3 ][OTf]2 (M=Cu, Ag) (10[OTf]2 , 11[OTf]2 ).

The Taming of Redox-Labile Phosphidotitanocene Cations

Tame d⁰ phosphidotitanocene cations stabilized with a pendant tertiary phosphane arm are reported. These compounds were obtained by one-electron oxidation of d¹ precursors with [Cp₂ Fe][BPh₄ ]. The electronic structure of these compounds was studied experimentally (EPR, UV/Vis, and NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis) and through DFT calculations. The theoretical analysis of the bonding situation by using the electron localization function (ELF) shows the presence of π-interactions between the phosphido ligand and Ti in the d⁰ complexes, whereas dπ-pπ repulsion prevents such interactions in the d¹ complexes. In addition, CH-π interactions were observed in several complexes, both in solution and in the solid state, between the phosphido ligand and the phosphane arm. The d⁰ complexes were found to be light sensitive, and decompose through Ti-P bond homolysis to give Ti^III species. A naked d⁰ phosphidotitanocene cation has been trapped by reaction with diphenylacetylene, yielding a Ti/P frustrated Lewis pair (FLP), which was found to be less reactive than a previously reported Zr analog.

Gold(I) Complexes Containing Phosphanyl- and Arsanylborane Ligands

The structural and photophysical properties of a series of new Au^I compounds have been studied. The reactions of AuCl(tht) with the phosphanyl- and arsanylboranes RR^' EBH₂ NMe₃ (E=P, As; R=H, Ph; R'=H, Ph, tBu) afford the complexes [AuCl(RR^' EBH₂ NMe₃ )]. In the solid state, [AuCl(H₂ PBH₂ NMe₃ )]₂ (2 a) is a dimer showing unsupported intermolecular aurophilic interactions with short Au⋅⋅⋅Au distances. In contrast, [AuCl(H₂ AsBH₂ NMe₃ )]_n (2 b) aggregates to form 1D chains. Organic substituents on the pnictogen atoms lead to discrete molecules in [AuCl(RR^' PBH₂ NMe₃ )] (2 c: R=H, R'=tBu; 2 d: R=R'=Ph). To increase the aurophilicity, the ionic homoleptic complexes [Au(RR^' EBH₂ NMe₃ )₂ ][AlCl₄ ] (3 a-d) have been synthesized, for which 3 a,b form chains in the solid state and exhibit luminescence. The emissions show a drastic redshift with temperature decrease, correlating with decreasing Au⋅⋅⋅Au distances. DFT calculations provide insight into the bonding situation of the products.

The Palladium Acetate-Catalyzed Microwave-Assisted Hirao Reaction without an Added Phosphorus Ligand as a "Green" Protocol: A Quantum Chemical Study on the Mechanism

It was proved by our experiments that on microwave irradiation, the mono‐ or bidentate phosphorus ligands generally applied in the palladium(II)‐catalyzed P–C coupling reaction of aryl bromides and dialkyl phosphites or secondary phosphine oxides may be substituted by the excess of the >P(O)H reagent that exists under a tautomeric equilibrium. Taking into account that the reduction of the palladium(II) salt and the ligation of the palladium(0) so formed requires 3 equivalents of the P‐species for the catalyst applied in a quantity of 5–10%, all together, 15–30% of the P‐reagent is necessary beyond its stoichiometric quantity. In the coupling reaction of diphenylphosphine oxide, it was possible to apply diethyl phosphite as the reducing agent and as the P‐ligand. The reactivities of the diethyl phosphite and diphenylphosphine oxide reagents were compared in a competitive reaction. The mechanism and the energetics of this new variation of the Hirao reaction of bromobenzene with Y₂P(O)H reagents (Y=EtO and Ph) was explored by quantum chemical calculations. The first detailed study on simple reaction models justified our assumption that, under the conditions of the reaction, the trivalent form of the >P(O)H reagent may serve as the P‐ligand in the palladium(0) catalyst, and shed light on the fine mechanism of the reaction sequence. The existence of the earlier described bis(palladium complex) {[H(OPh₂P)₂PdOAc]₂} was refuted by high level theoretical calculations. This kind of complex may be formed only with chloride anions instead of the acetate anion. The interaction of palladium acetate and Y₂P(O)H may result in only the formation of the [(HO)Y₂P]₂Pd complex that is the active catalyst in the Hirao reaction. The new variation of the Hirao reaction is of a more general value, and represents the greenest protocol, as there is no need for the usual P‐ligands. Instead, the >P(O)H reagent should be used in an excess of up to 30%. Hence, the costs and environmental burdens may be decreased.

Molybdenum complexes supported by mixed NHC/phosphine ligands: activation of N2 and reaction with P(OMe)3 to the first meta-phosphite complex

Molybdenum(0) dinitrogen complexes, supported by the mixed NHC/phosphine pincer ligand PCP, exhibit an extreme activation of the N2 ligand due to a very π-electron-rich metal center. The low thermal stability of these compounds can be increased using phosphites instead of phosphines as coligands. Through an amalgam reduction of [MoCl3(PCP)] in the presence of trimethyl phosphite and N2 the highly activated and room-temperature stable dinitrogen complex [Mo(N2)(PCP)(P(OMe)3)2] is obtained. As a second product, the first transition metal complex containing the meta-phosphite ligand P(O)(OMe) originates from this reaction.

P(O)R2-directed Pd-catalyzed C-H functionalization of biaryl derivatives to synthesize chiral phosphorous ligands

Chiral phosphorus ligands have been widely used in transition metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions. Herein, we report a new synthesis approach of chiral biaryls containing a phosphorus moiety using P(O)R₂-directed Pd-catalyzed C–H activation; the functionalized products are produced with good enantioselectivity.

Influence of the π-coordinated arene on the anticancer activity of ruthenium(II) carbohydrate organometallic complexes

The synthesis and in vitro cytotoxicity of a series of Ru^II(arene) complexes with carbohydrate-derived phosphite ligands and various arene co-ligands is described. The arene ligand has a strong influence on the in vitro anticancer activity of this series of compounds, which correlates fairly well with cellular accumulation. The most lipophilic compound bearing a biphenyl moiety and a cyclohexylidene-protected carbohydrate is the most cytotoxic with unprecedented IC₅₀ values for the compound class in three human cancer cell lines. This compound shows reactivity to the DNA model nucleobase 9-ethylguanine, but does not alter the secondary structure of plasmid DNA, indicating that other biological targets are responsible for its cytotoxic effect.

An exceptional P-H phosphonite: biphenyl-2,2'-bisfenchylchlorophosphite and derived ligands (BIFOPs) in enantioselective copper-catalyzed 1,4-additions

Biphenyl-2,2'-bisfenchol (BIFOL) based chlorophosphite, BIFOP-Cl, exhibits surprisingly high stabilities against hydrolysis as well as hydridic and organometallic nucleophiles. Chloride substitution in BIFOP-Cl proceeds only under drastic conditions. New enantiopure, sterically demanding phosphorus ligands such as a phosphoramidite, a phosphite and a P-H phosphonite (BIFOP-H) are hereby accessible. In enantioselective Cu-catalyzed 1,4-additions of ZnEt2 to 2-cyclohexen-1-one, this P-H phosphonite (yielding 65% ee) exceeds even the corresponding phosphite and phosphoramidite.
