Alias-Free Arrays

Nonuniform array geometries provide freedom for increased aperture and reduced mutual coupling. A necessary and sufficient condition is given for an array of isotropic sensor elements to be unambiguous for any specified set of directions of arrival. The set of unambiguous spatial frequencies is shown to be a parallelepiped, admitting simple geometrical interpretation. Results are used in design of linear, planar, and 3D arrays.

Low Discrepancy Sparse Phased Array Antennas

Sparse arrays have grating lobes in the far field pattern due to the large spacing of elements residing in a rectangular or triangular grid. Random element spacing removes the grating lobes but produces large variations in element density across the aperture. In fact, some areas are so dense that the elements overlap. This paper introduces a low discrepancy sequence (LDS) for generating the element locations in sparse planar arrays without grating lobes. This nonrandom alternative finds an element layout that reduces the grating lobes while keeping the elements far enough apart for practical construction. Our studies consider uniform sparse LDS arrays with 86% less elements than a fully populated array, and numerical results are presented that show these sampling techniques are capable of completely removing the grating lobes of sparse arrays. We present the mathematical formulation for implementing an LDS generated element lattice for sparse planar arrays, and present numerical results on their performance. Multiple array configurations are studied, and we show that these LDS techniques are not impacted by the type/shape of the planar array. Moreover, in comparison between the LDS techniques, we show that the Poisson disk sampling technique outperforms all other approaches and is the recommended LDS technique for sparse arrays.

Multiomics Profiling of Alzheimer's Disease Serum for the Identification of Autoantibody Biomarkers

New biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with a diagnostic value in preclinical and prodromal stages are urgently needed. AD-related serum autoantibodies are potential candidate biomarkers. Here, we aimed at identifying AD-related serum autoantibodies using protein microarrays and mass spectrometry-based methods. To this end, an untargeted complementary screening using high-density (42,100 antigens) and low-density (384 antigens) planar protein-epitope signature tag (PrEST) arrays and an immunoprecipitation protocol coupled to mass spectrometry analysis were used for serum autoantibody profiling. From the untargeted screening phase, 377 antigens corresponding to 338 proteins were selected for validation. Out of them, IVD, CYFIP1, and ADD2 seroreactivity was validated using 128 sera from AD patients and controls by PrEST-suspension bead arrays, and ELISA or luminescence Halotag-based bead immunoassay using full-length recombinant proteins. Importantly, IVD, CYFIP1, and ADD2 showed in combination a noticeable AD diagnostic ability. Moreover, IVD protein abundance in the prefrontal cortex was significantly two-fold higher in AD patients than in controls by western blot and immunohistochemistry, whereas CYFIP1 and ADD2 were significantly down-regulated in AD patients. The panel of AD-related autoantigens identified by a comprehensive multiomics approach may provide new insights of the disease and should help in the blood-based diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Trends of Bead Counting-Based Technologies Toward the Detection of Disease-Related Biomarkers

Nowadays, the biomolecular assay platforms built-up based on bead counting technologies have emerged to be powerful tools for the sensitive and high-throughput detection of disease biomarkers. In this mini-review, we classified the bead counting technologies into statistical counting platforms and digital counting platforms. The design principles, the readout strategies, as well as the pros and cons of these platforms are introduced in detail. Finally, we point out that the digital bead counting technologies will lead the future trend for the absolute quantification of critical biomarkers, and the integration of new signal amplification approaches and routine optical/clinical instruments may provide new opportunities in building-up easily accessible digital assay platforms.
