Abstract
The concept of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) being linked to both rabies post-vaccination encephalomyelitis and multiple sclerosis (MS) has raised the intriguing question whether animal studies carried out for the induction and transmission of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) using brain antigens including prions do have a similar immunopathogenetic mechanism. Although an essential link between autoimmunity and MS has been well established, its role in the pathogenesis of TSEs is generally lacking. However, auto-antibodies to myelin proteins and/or other neuronal antigens such as neurofilaments and prion proteins have been reported in animals with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and scrapie as well as in patients with Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD) and kuru. Acinetobacter has been suggested as a possible triggering microbial factor in the initiation of the autoimmune responses in these diseases because bacterial molecular sequences resemble brain antigens, especially in animals affected with BSE and patients with MS and CJD. These possibilities need to be evaluated further with longitudinal prospective studies carried out on larger numbers of animals or humans with such diseases. The transplantation of saline suspensions of brain homogenates will evoke immunological responses and therefore, the results in the study of MS and other neurological diseases have to be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
The authors studied the bacterial flora of the dog oral cavity and of bite wounds, Aerobic bacteria were isolated from mouth swabs of 16 normal and 5 rabid dogs as well as from infected dog-bite wounds from 18 patients. A total of 20 different microbial species were recovered from mouth swab cultures. The most frequently isolated organisms were Klebsiella pneumoniae ssp pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, and Pasteurella species. There were no differences in the aerobic bacterial flora between rabid and nonrabid dogs. From the cultures of the bite wound swabs, the authors found that almost all of the organisms identified were part of the normal oral flora of the dog. One or more aerobic bacteria were isolated from the infected dog-bite wounds. Two patients had four, 3 had three, 4 had two, and 6 had one of the nine organisms in their wounds. The predominant species of bacteria involved in infection of bite wounds were, as follows: Staphylococcus aureus, Pasteurella multocida, E. coli, Moraxella species, Pasteurella canis, and Enterobacter cloacae. However, three wound cultures had no aerobic bacterial growth. The results of this study show that the infected bite wounds may contain a mixed bacterial flora that colonize human skin and the oral cavity of dogs.

Abstract
Target cells of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) directed to the individual structural proteins (except for the large polymerase (L) protein) of rabies virus were established by expressing only the respective protein in murine neuroblastoma (NA) and murine macrophage (J774-1) cell lines. Mice infected with the ERA strain of rabies virus developed CTL responses to all of these rabies virus proteins. The cytotoxic activity was abrogated by pretreatment of the effector cells with anti-CD8 monoclonal antibody (MAb) and complement but not with anti-CD4 MAb. Cell lysis by CTL was blocked in the presence of anti-major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class 1 antibodies in J774-1 cell lines. Rabies virus-infected cells express these proteins at the surface, which can be recognized and lysed by the respective CTL. Mice immunized with beta-propiolactone-inactivated virus induced a CTL response against glycoprotein but not against internal viral components. This assay system might be useful for further analysis of the possible contribution of these proteins in the cell-mediated immune protection against rabies.

Abstract
271 strains of rabies virus, isolated in different regions of the former USSR, were studied with the use of monoclonal antibodies P-41 (Germany). All strains isolated in the arctic regions, as well as some of the strains isolated in nonarctic regions situated 300-1700 km south of the polar circle (the Baltic countries, Central Yakutia, the eastern part of the Transbaikal region), gave positive reaction with these antibodies. Cases of hydrophobia caused by virus with the 41 (+) marker were described. Information on the spread such strains in other parts of the world is presented.

Abstract
Non-neural tissues, from three male and four female stripped skunks (Mephitis mephitis), 5 to 7 months old, and one male and two female red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), 12 to 16 months old, experimentally infected with street rabies virus, were examined by light microscopic immunohistochemical and electron microscopic methods. This is the first report of ultrastructural lesions in rabies-infected adrenal medulla, cornea, and nasal glands. Using the streptavidin biotin peroxidase technique, antigen was detected in mucous cells and interstitial neurons and their processes in the submandibular salivary gland, in chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla, in epidermal cells of the skin, in external root sheath cells of hair follicles, and in corneal epithelial cells. Electron microscopically, matrix (viral nucleocapsid), virions, and anomalous viral products were common in most tissues examined, but their relative proportions varied. The results suggested that replication with minimal accumulation of matrix and anomalous viral growth products was characteristic of growth in tissues (submandibular salivary gland) that frequently produce high titers of virus, whereas replication with large amounts of matrix and anomalous structures occurred in tissues (adrenal gland and nasal gland) that generally contained low or moderate titers of virus. Novel findings included viral budding into secretory granules, increase in microfilaments in infected mucogenic cells, and continuity of viral convoluted membranous profiles with rough endoplasmic reticulum of chromaffin cells and nasal glandular cells. The presence of viral antigen and developing virus in extra-neural tissues constitutes a potential risk of non-bite exposure to people in certain groups/occupations.

Abstract
Two raccoons (Procyon lotor) were inoculated in the masseter muscles with 10(5.9) mouse intracerebral lethal dose50 (MICD50) of a rabies virus isolated from a naturally infected Iowa (USA) striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis). Five striped skunks were inoculated with either 10(0.7) or 10(2.1) MICLD50 of the same isolate. All five skunks died within 35 days following inoculation. Both raccoons survived 273 days without adverse effects, and virus was not isolated from saliva samples taken at between 25 and 273 days following inoculation.

Abstract
The occurrence of a case of human rabies in Peninsular Malaysia is reported. Despite the various control measures taken, sporadic cases of rabies have continued to occur in Peninsular Malaysia, especially in the northern states. Clinical awareness of the occurrence of rabies is therefore important and effective post-exposure prophylaxis should be instituted as soon as possible to prevent the possible occurrence of this dreaded disease.

Abstract
We compared 24 rabies samples collected in Estonia in 1989 to 1992, to identify the kinds of rabies strains circulating in this country. Eleven of the strains came from the islands of Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Muhu, off the Baltic coast; 13 came from the mainland. The mainland strains, like those from the 1988 to 1989 epizootic in Finland, were antigenically different from the 11 island isolates. The island isolates reacted negatively with monoclonal antibody W-187.5 as does the SAD B19 rabies vaccine strain, currently spread as baits to wildlife in Finland and other parts of Europe. In order to unambiguously distinguish the island isolates from the SAD B19 vaccine, we developed a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol for rabies, followed by a single restriction enzyme digestion. This method enabled the island isolates to be differentiated with ease from the vaccine strain SAD B19 at the level of the nucleoprotein-coding region. Additionally, this method had the ability to distinguish other polar field isolates examined, as well as the laboratory challenge virus strain CVS, from SAD B19 vaccine. Modifications of the above PCR method may be used for epidemiological investigations of new outbreaks or of outbreaks involving different species.

Abstract
The proposal that the bizarre behavioral changes which occur during rabies infection are due to selective infection of limbic system neurons was further studied in skunks (a species important in naturally occurring disease). A detailed immunohistochemical study of brains of skunks experimentally infected with either Challenge virus standard (CVS) or street rabies virus revealed only trace amounts of viral antigen in many limbic system neurons and marked differences in viral distribution between street and CVS virus. These data were collected during early stage rabies when behavioral changes occur. Areas which contained heavy accumulations of street rabies virus but low amounts of CVS rabies virus were the neuronal perikarya and processes of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, midbrain raphe, hypoglossal and red nuclei. In contrast, large accumulations of CVS virus were found in the Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, the habenular nuclei and in pyramidal cells throughout the cerebral cortex, while corresponding areas in all street virus-infected skunks contained minimal antigen. These findings were very consistent for animals of the same experimental group and between skunks inoculated both intramuscularly and intranasally with skunk street virus. Skunks inoculated intramuscularly with CVS rabies virus failed to develop rabies. Since, in this model, street virus infection generally produces furious rabies and CVS infection results in dumb rabies, we speculate that the behavioral changes which occur in these two different clinical syndromes are due to the heavy and specific accumulation of virus in different regions of the CNS. These results show that regions other than those of the limbic system may also be involved in the pathogenesis of behavior changes in rabid animals.

Abstract
Rabies fixed virus (CVS) was passaged 10 times in mice by intramuscular (im) route followed by experimental inoculation of the titrated virus in 4 groups of mice with the dose of 0.1 ml of 1000 mouse (LD50 0.03 ml) using intracerebral (ic), intravenous (iv), intramuscular (im), intraocular (io), and intranasal (in) routes respectively. No marked variation in clinical signs due to variation of routes could be detected. Involvement of brain with io route could be detected even in preclinical stage. Although the virus could be detected in the postclinical stage in all the tissues under study (brain, skin, salivary gland and corneal impression), with io and ic routes spread of the virus was observed in comparatively higher concentrations.

Abstract
Examination of 191 specimens of Chiroptera in Osh Province of Kyrgyzstan yielded 1 strain of lyssavirus from Myotis blythi, the isolate not belonging to serotype 1. The virus was designated Aravan by the area of its isolation. Its antigenic structure was studied using antinucleocapsid monoclonal antibodies of the Wistar Institute (Philadelphia, ISA) and Central Veterinary Laboratory of Great Britain (Waybridge, Great Britain). The paper presents its antigenic profile, brief characteristics of similarity and differences of the Aravan strain and known lyssavirus serotypes.

Abstract
The effects of the inoculation of a canine strain of rabies virus in sheep were studied using ten animals which received different amounts of this virus. Two subjects, inoculated with 10(5.4) mouse intracerebral lethal doses 50% (MICLD50), died from rabies after 19 and 40 days of incubation. Clinical signs were anorexia, emaciation, nervous reactions and prostration before death. The virus was recovered from different parts of the central nervous system and salivary glands with high titres. Only three animals showed an antibody response, at very low levels.

Abstract
Nucleotide sequence analysis of a 200-bp region of the nucleoprotein (N) gene of rabies virus differentiated unique genetic groups of rabies virus from samples collected in areas where dog rabies is enzootic in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Patterns of nucleotide sequence identified for an outbreak area were conserved in samples collected over three decades. Epidemiologic relationships among isolates were determined by patterns of conserved nucleotide sequence, and the degree of sequence divergence between samples from separate outbreak areas were measured. This approach suggested that a historical reconstruction of events leading to the introduction of rabies into an area would be possible. In this broader view of rabies epidemiology, the cultural legacy of European exploration and colonization may have also included zoonotic disease.

Abstract
The results of intramuscular inoculation of 111 bats (Myotis daubentoni, Myotis brandtii) with three strains of Lyssaviruses--Yuli, Stade, and 1150 are presented. Bats were found to have low susceptibility, especially to strains of serotype 4. After infection with serotype 4 viruses, fewer bats died but within shorter periods than after infection with serotype 1. After inoculation with strain 1150, 60% of bats yielded virus, whereas only 9-24% did after inoculation with type 4 strains. The survival time after inoculation was 32.2 and 19.0 days, respectively. Manifestations of the disease, virus distribution in viscera, and the results of examinations of specimens from bats by express methods are described.

Abstract
Since 1966, the Hawaii State Government has been conducting Fluorescent Rabies Antibody (FRA) testing on animal brains as part of a statewide rabies-surveillance program. On April 3, 1991, the Department of Health (DoH) laboratory diagnosed the first case of rabies detected in the State. A large brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus fuscus, captured in a transport container that had just been off-loaded from a ship at Honolulu harbor, was caught. It's brain was examined and showed typical fluorescent staining patterns for rabies virus. The USPHS Centers For Disease Control (CDC) rabies laboratory confirmed the diagnosis 2 days later. The successful interception of this rabid animal was the result of close cooperation between the private sector (Sea Land Service, Hawaiian Stevedores) and the Hawaii State Government Departments of Health and of Agriculture.

Abstract
An immunohistochemical and histopathological study using the ABC technique was carried out to examine time-sequential virus spread in the central nervous system (CNS) of mice after inoculation with the CVS strain of fixed rabies virus by different routes; intracerebral (ic), intraocular (io), intranasal (in), intramuscular (im) and subcutaneous (sc). Only the ic and io inoculations caused fatal infections, so that detailed analysis was conducted on mice inoculated by these two routes. In ic-inoculated mice, viral antigens were detected mainly in neurons in the cerebral cortex and in the pyramidal cells and granular cells of the hippocampus. After io inoculation, viral antigen was first detected in the trigeminal nerve ganglia, following which it spreads to the cerebral cortex and cerebellum. In the hippocampus only a few cells were viral antigen-positive at the early stage after io inoculation. There were no inflammatory lesions or Negri bodies in the CNS of mice infected by either route. This suggests that clinical signs such as ataxia or depression leading to death may be due to the direct effect of the virus on the functions of neural cells, but not to inflammatory reactions. The ABC method will be useful for the early diagnosis of suspected patients or animals to have the disease when conventional histopathological and immunofluorescent antibody techniques can not detect lesions or viral antigens.

Abstract
The effects of post-mortem autolysis were studied on the detection of rabies virus RNA in the brains of mice with experimental rabies by using in situ hybridization (ISH). The brains of CVS-infected mice were subjected to autolytic periods in situ of up to 72 h. ISH was performed with 3H-labelled RNA probes for rabies virus glycoprotein gene genomic RNA and mRNA. During the post-mortem period there was progressive loss of signals for genomic RNA and mRNA, which was greater for mRNA. ISH signals in perikarya also changed for genomic RNA from a multifocal to a diffuse distribution during the post-mortem period. Rabies virus antigen was better preserved during the autolytic period. Effects of the agonal state, degradation of RNA by ribonucleases, and diffusion of RNA out of cells prior to fixation could explain the loss of ISH signals in post-mortem tissues.

Abstract
A non-isotopic method of in situ hybridization (ISH) was developed for the detection of rabies virus RNA in paraffin-embedded tissues. Digoxigenin-labelled RNA probes for rabies virus glycoprotein mRNA were used. The method had good sensitivity and low backgrounds, and there was excellent cellular localization of signals. ISH wih digoxigenin-labelled probes was compared with ISH with 3H-labelled probes. This non-isotopic method of ISH is more convenient than the radiolabelled method, and it is quicker because a long autoradiographic exposure is not required.

Abstract
To determine raccoon (Procyon lotor) susceptibility and serum neutralizing antibody response to a skunk salivary gland rabies virus, raccoons were inoculated with a rabies virus isolated from a naturally-infected striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis). Raccoons were divided into four groups of three animals each. A dilution of the rabies virus suspension, 10(2.4), 10(3.4), or 10(4.8), mouse intracerebral lethal dose50 (MICLD50), was administered into the masseter muscles of each animal. Three negative control animals received only diluent. Saliva and sera were collected on post-inoculation days 35, 63 and 92 for virus isolation and determination of serum neutralizing antibody titer. All animals survived the 92 day observation period and none exhibited the behavioral changes classically associated with clinical rabies virus infections. Rabies virus was not detected in the saliva of any raccoon and two of the three animals receiving the highest inoculum developed serum neutralizing antibodies (SNA). On day 92, a challenge suspension of New York City/Georgia (NYC/GA) strain rabies virus in fox salivary glands (10(3.2) MICLD50) was administered to all 12 raccoons. All animals succumbed to rabies virus except the two animals that had earlier developed SNA. The results of this study provided evidence about the susceptibility of raccoons to a skunk rabies virus and demonstrated that exposed raccoons could survive for at least 92 days following exposure. Furthermore, animals developing SNA under such circumstances were capable of withstanding challenge with rabies virus that was fatal for seronegative raccoons.

Abstract
The experiments showed that in a dose of 35-70 mg/kg rifampicin inhibited reproduction of the fixed rabies virus in the brain of infected animals. The drug had no inhibitory effect on synthesis of the virus-neutralizing antibodies after vaccination. Combination of rifampicin with antirabies gamma-globulin had a marked synergistic effect. The animal survival after the combination use amounted to 75-100 per cent and depended on the infective dose of the virus and the scheme of the drug administration. It was concluded that rifampicin might be used in complex therapy of rabies during the incubation period (along with gamma-globulin and the vaccine) for inhibiting virus reproduction at early infection stages.

Abstract
The hearts of five naturally infected rabid dogs were studied by immunohistochemistry on paraffin sections using a monoclonal antibody and the peroxidase labelled streptavidin-biotin method to detect rabies ribonucleoprotein. In all cases distinct small granular and ring-shaped antigen deposits were found within the nerve cells of the cardiac ganglia thus reflecting the early centrifugal spread of virus along the pathway of the vagal nerve to the heart. Histologic findings consisted only of single small eosinophilic inclusions in some nerve cell bodies. These findings may be of diagnostic value.

Abstract
Two strains (UB-1 and UB-2) of rabies-related viruses were isolated from the brain of Nyctalus noctula and Vespertilio murinus captured from the hollows of tall trees on the left bank of Pripyat river in the Volynsky region of Ukrainian S.S.R. The viruses were isolated by means of intracerebral inoculation to white mice. The isolates were identified as rabies-related viruses of Duvenhage type in an indirect test of fluorescent antibodies with the panels of nucleocapsid monoclonal antibodies (NC Mab) provided by Wistar Institute (Philadelphia) and by Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL, Weybridge). During the typing with the Wistar panel of NC Mab complete antigenic similarity was established between the newly isolated strain and Yuli virus. The reaction with CVL NC Mab revealed group-specific antigenic similarity between Yuli virus on one hand, Duvenhage-6 and Duvenhage-66 on the other hand, as well as between UB-1 and UB-2 and Duvenhage-26. The reaction with antibodies to clones DB-3,4,6,9, and 10 detected antigenic similarity between the viruses of chiropteric origin isolated in the U.S.S.R., North-West Europe as well in Africa, although some differences were discovered. Yuli, UB-1, and UB-2 viruses isolated in the U.S.S.R. were proved to belong to Duvenhage group of viruses (serotype 4).

Abstract
Rabies virus pathogenesis was studied in a mouse model by inoculation of the masseter muscle. At different intervals, the masseter muscle, trigeminal ganglia, and brain were analyzed for virus-specific RNA with a polymerase chain reaction assay, which revealed that as early as 18 h postinfection (p.i.), virus-specific RNA was present in the trigeminal ganglia, and at 24 h p.i., viral RNA was identified in the brain stem. Analysis of the masseter muscle demonstrated virus at 1 h p.i. but no virus-specific RNA between 6 and 30 h p.i., indicating that virus invaded the nerve ending directly, without prior replication in the muscle. At 36 h p.i., viral RNA was detected again in the masseter muscle. Selective amplification of plus- and minus-strand RNA isolated from the masseter muscle at 96 h p.i. revealed that the majority of the rabies virus-specific RNA was in the positive sense, suggesting virus replication in muscle tissue during late stages of infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Extensive investigation of three patients who died of rabies in the United States failed to reveal any source of exposure to the disease. The three patients had immigrated to the United States from areas in Laos, the Philippines, and Mexico where rabies is endemic. METHODS We studied rabies viruses isolated from the three patients, other patients with a known source of exposure, and animals in the United States, Thailand (as a proxy for Laos), the Philippines, and Mexico. The viruses were characterized by indirect immunofluorescence and neutralization tests according to their reactions to panels of monoclonal antibodies. Transcribed complementary DNA from these isolates was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction; the DNA product was then analyzed by differential digestion with restriction enzymes. RESULTS The viral isolate from each of the three patients was a rabies variant with distinctive antigenic or genetic characteristics. For each of the three isolates, identical variants were found in specimens from rabid animals obtained from or near the country in which the patient lived before immigrating to the United States. None of these variants were found among the isolates collected from rabid animals in the United States. CONCLUSIONS Rabies infection in these three patients did not originate in the United States but resulted from exposures in Laos, the Philippines, and Mexico. Since the three patients had lived in the United States for 4 years, 6 years, and 11 months, our findings suggest that the onset of the clinical manifestations of rabies occurred after long incubation periods.

Abstract
Four rabies virus isolates from dogs that succumbed to rabies infection in Nigeria within one year of anti-rabies vaccination were characterised by monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). The samples were screened for rabies and rabies-related viral antigens by the indirect fluorescent antibody test, performed with MAb 502-2, which recognises the nucleocapsid (NC) protein of all known Lyssaviruses and with MAb 422-5 which identifies African rabies-related viruses. All four canine virus isolates displayed positive fluorescence with MAb 502-2 and were negative with MAb 422-5. In the anti-NC MAb characterisation with a panel of 34 additional MAbs, all isolates displayed positive staining with 32 of the MAbs, were negative with MAb 102-27 and all displayed poor immunofluorescence with MAb 377-7. On the basis of reactivity with a panel of 40 anti-glycoprotein (G) MAbs the isolates were separated into four distinct viral subtypes. None of these canine isolates was identified as the common attenuated Flury LEP rabies strain used for domestic animal vaccination and none resembled other previously characterised rabies viruses from Nigeria.

Abstract
Brain tissues from 128 rabid animals from Florida in 1987 and 1988 were analyzed with monoclonal antibodies and cases were mapped by species and antigenic variant. The single variant found in terrestrial animals was distinguished easily from the variety of antigenic variants identified for infected bats, and there was no evidence of transmission of rabies between bats and terrestrial animals. The raccoon (Procyon lotor) appeared to be the sole maintenance source for terrestrial animal rabies in Florida.

Abstract
In this article the regulatory factors of the epizootic process are considered and the spatial-temporal prognostication of rabies infection in the region is proposed on the basis of data on rabies morbidity among animals, the purchase of skins of carnivorous animals for 20-25 years, virological experiments on wild animals, calculation of the number of carnivores and small mammals, as meteorological observations. The study has shown that a variety of animal species serving as hosts for the virus and its population differences contribute to the stable existence of the infection. Rabies morbidity has been found to be positively linked with its preceding level, the number of wild animals, the height and hardness of the snow cover and negatively with the number of small mammals.

Abstract
Twenty isolates of street rabies virus were recovered in mouse neutroblastoma cells from 84 rabies suspect brain specimens from Nigeria dogs and a cat. They were characterized with the Tübingen monoclonal antibody panels directed against nucleocapsid and glycoprotein antigens. Antigenic variations were detected both with antinucleocapsid (anti-NC) and antiglycoprotein (anti-GP) monoclonal antibodies (mabs). One isolate reacted positively with anti-NC mab P41 which hitherto has been known to react positively with polar rabies. Another isolate did not react with anti-NC mab 187.5; a reaction normally seen with ERA/SAD strains of rabies virus. With anti-GP mabs it was possible to group the isolates by their area of origin. Isolates from Plateau State were not neutralized by anti-GP mabs ERA 543 and P44.7.2. The isolates studied had glycoprotein antigenic patterns different from the pattern for low egg passage (LEP) Flury strain vaccine virus used in Nigeria for immunization of dogs.

Abstract
Rabies virus is a neurotropic agent which spreads in the CNS via axonal transport. Previous studies had shown that this axonal transport through the brain could be inhibited by stereotaxic administration of colchicine; however, this inhibition was reversible. We describe here a method to enhance the duration of this colchicine-mediated inhibition by delivering the drug continuously in the rat brain with osmotic pumps.

Abstract
Rabies viruses isolated from healthy dogs, were passaged in mice and adapted to cell culture. After 5-7 passages, isolated viruses were subjected to monoclonal antibody (Mab) characterization with a panel of 36 anti-nucleocapsid (NC) and 40 anti-glycoprotein (G) MAbs. The four viruses showed positive fluorescence with all NC hybridomas except MAb 422-5, confirming them as true rabies virus isolates. The anti-G MAb reactivity pattern was the same in the four isolates indicating that they belong to the same antigenic group, but were antigenically distinct from the Flury LEP rabies vaccine virus which is widely used throughout Nigeria for canine vaccination, and from other previously characterized street lyssaviruses from Nigeria.

Abstract
The primary multiplication site of VVTGgRAB, a recombinant vaccinia virus (VV) expressing the rabies virus G glycoprotein, was studied in comparison with that of the parental VV Copenhagen strain, after oral administration to foxes. Foxes were fed with 10(8) TCID50 of either VVTGgRAB or VV and were sacrificed 12, 24, 48 or 96 h after inoculation. Both viruses were detected by viral isolation in the tonsils during the first 48 h after inoculation at titres between 10(2) and 10(4.3) TCID50/ml. Indirect immunofluorescence confirmed the presence of the virus in tonsils of some of the foxes. The polymerase chain reaction allowed the detection of VVTGgRAB in the tonsils of both of two foxes tested after 24 h, three of three foxes after 48 h, in the buccal mucosa of one of two foxes tested after 24 h and two of three foxes after 48 h and in the soft palate of one of two foxes tested after 24 h and one of three foxes after 48 h. VV was detected in the tonsils of one fox tested after 48 h, in the buccal mucosa of another fox tested after 24 h, and in the first fox after 48 h by the same reaction. Foxes were inoculated with virus isolated from fox tonsils 24 h after oral administration (with or without cell culture amplification) to perform back passages. No virus could be isolated in either case after this passage. The innocuity of VVTGgRAB was also demonstrated when foxes were inoculated with passaged virus.

Abstract
To help identify the different strains of rabies virus existing in Brazil, the antigenic profile of 13 virus isolates from humans and animals was determined. The indirect immunofluorescence technique was used, with monoclonal antibodies targeted at the viral nucleocapsid. In the northeast of the country five different viral strains were identified, and in the southeast, two. A rhabdovirus isolated from a fox could not be characterized as a rabies virus. Previously, only two antigenic variants had been identified in Brazil. It would appear that distribution of the strains is not related to the species from which they are isolated or to their geographical origin, a finding that differs from previous observations. These preliminary results underscore the need for further research in order to identify the existence and distribution of different strains of rabies virus in Brazil, which would help to prevent rabies vaccination failures.

Abstract
ERA anti-rabies vaccine prepared in kidney tissue culture was evaluated against four different antigenic strains of rabies virus in mice: two of them dog strains, C/SP and C/NG, another a bat vampire strain, DR-19, and the CVS strain. The CVS antigenic characteristics were determined by means the antinucleocapsid monoclonal antibodies technique. Twenty one days old mice were vaccinated, intramuscularly, in the inner side of the thigh, with 0.05 ml of vaccine and challenged at 42 days old, together with those of the control group, intramuscularly, in the inner side of the thigh, with 0.05 ml of the corresponding viral strain dilution. The ERA anti-rabies vaccine protected 100% of all the mice challenged with C/SP, C/NG and DR-19 strains and 83% of those challenged with CVS. The control groups mortality rate varied between 70 and 90%.

Abstract
Inclusion bodies, indistinguishable from rabies inclusion bodies (Negri bodies), were found in the brains of 8 nonrabid dogs. The inclusions were compared to Negri bodies present in neurons of rabies-positive animals and examined for the presence of rabies virus by a combination of immunoperoxidase staining (7 cases), fluorescent antibody (FA) staining (1 case), and transmission electron microscopy (4 cases). Positive immunoperoxidase staining for rabies was obtained in brain tissues from FA rabies-positive animals. All brain tissues from the 7 dogs stained by the immunoperoxidase method and the brain from the 1 dog stained by the FA method were negative for rabies. Rabies virus was not found in inclusion-containing neurons in the cases examined by transmission electron microscopy. These results emphasize the importance of FA testing and mouse inoculation for the diagnosis of rabies.

Fixed rabies virus strains (ERA and CVS) produce a fatal paralytic disease in mice after intracerebral or intramuscular injection. Some antigenic mutants of both CVS and ERA viruses with a substitution in position 333 of the glycoprotein (arginine is replaced either by a glutamine, a glycine, or an isoleucine) are totally avirulent for adult mice whatever the dose and the route of inoculation. Here we report an exhaustive investigation of the effect of amino acid 333 on viral virulence. New antigenic mutants were isolated from either CVS, CVS derivatives, or SADBern having arginine in position 333 encoded by CGG, AGG, CGU, or AGA respectively. This study shows that when arginine is replaced by either a leucine, an isoleucine, a methionine, a cysteine, or a serine, the antigenic mutant is also totally avirulent. But when arginine is replaced by a lysine it is still pathogenic although the LD50 by the intracerebral route is higher. Furthermore 41 independent virulent revertants were isolated from four avirulent mutants (with a glycine, a glutamine, a methionine, or a serine in position 333 of the glycoprotein). Thirty-nine regained an arginine at position 333 and 2 had a lysine. From this analysis it appears that the presence of a positively charged amino acid (arginine or lysine) in position 333 of the glycoprotein is necessary for viral virulence.

Abstract
The penetration of the CVS strain of rabies virus and its avirulent derivative AvO1 into peripheral neurons was investigated after intramuscular inoculation into the forelimbs of adult mice. It was found that CVS directly penetrates both the sensitive and motor routes with equal efficiency, without prior multiplication in muscle cells. Infected neurons became detectable 18 h after infection. The second cycle of infection occurred within 2 days, and at day 3 there was a massive invasion of the spinal cord and sensory ganglia. In sensory ganglia, where it was possible to identify cell outlines, it was evident that the infection did not proceed directly from cell body to cell body. The avirulent strain AvO1 penetrated motor and sensory neurons with the same efficiency as CVS. Restriction of viral propagation was observed from the second and third cycles onwards. No further development of the infection could be seen after day 3, and by that time the lysis of primarily infected neurons seemed to occur.

Abstract
We studied the distribution of rabies viral antigen in the brain and spinal cord of 7 patients with rabies by immunohistochemical techniques. Four patients presented with encephalitis, the remaining 3 had paralysis. Neither the rabies viral antigen distribution nor inflammation paralleled clinical presentations. Patients who had survival times of 7 days or less (4/7) had a greater amount of antigen-positive neurons in brainstem and spinal cord regardless of the clinical type.
