Abstract
Recent leaks of underground fuel storage tanks in the Pearl Harbor region have led to direct release of un-weathered petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) into drinking water sources, which then directly underwent chlorination disinfection treatment. Since the control of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) traditionally focuses natural organic matters (NOM) from source water and little is known about the interactions between free chlorine and un-weathered PHCs, laboratory chlorination experiments in batch reactors were conducted to determine the formation potential of DBPs during chlorination of PHC-contaminated drinking water. Quantitative analysis of regulated DBPs showed that significant quantities of THM4 (average 3,498 μg/L) and HAA5 (average 355.4 μg/L) compounds were formed as the result of chlorination of un-weathered PHCs. Amongst the regulated DBPs, THM4, which were comprised primarily of chloroform and bromodichloromethane, were more abundant than HAA5. Numerous unregulated DBPs and a large diversity of unidentified potentially halogenated organic compounds were also produced, with the most abundant being 1,1-dichloroacetone, 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane, chloropicrin, dichloroacetonitrile, and trichloracetonitrile. Together, the results demonstrated the DBP formation potential when PHC-contaminated water undergoes chlorination treatment. Further studies are needed to confirm the regulated DBP production and health risks under field relevant conditions.

Abstract
Infected diabetic wound (DW) presents a prolonged and challenging healing process within the field of regenerative medicine. The effectiveness of conventional drug therapies is hindered by their limited ability to reach deep tissues and promote adequate wound healing rates. Therefore, there is an imperative to develop drug delivery systems that can penetrate deep tissues while exhibiting multifunctional properties to expedite wound healing. In this study, we devised a soluble microneedle (MN) patch made of γ-PGA, featuring multiple arrays, which was loaded with core-shell structured nanoparticles (NPs) known as Ag@MSN@CeO2, to enhance the healing of infected DWs. The NP comprises a CeO2 core with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, a mesoporous silica NP (MSN) shell with angiogenic characteristics, and an outermost layer doped with Ag to combat bacterial infections. We demonstrated that the MN platform loaded with Ag@MSN@CeO2 successfully penetrated deep tissues for effective drug delivery. These MN tips induced the formation of multiple regenerative sites at various points, leading to antibacterial, reactive oxygen species-lowering, macrophage ecological niche-regulating, vascular regeneration-promoting, and collagen deposition-promoting effects, thus significantly expediting the healing process of infected DWs. Considering these findings, the multifunctional MN@Ag@MSN@CeO2 patch exhibits substantial potential for clinical applications in the treatment of infected DW. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract
In this study, edible bird's nest (EBN) was proven to be a suitable source of bioactive peptides via enzymatic hydrolysis. The ultrafiltration component of the EBN peptides (EBNPs, Mw < 3 000 Da) could be responsible for moderate moisture retention and filaggrin synthesis. It was found that EBNP had a great capacity to protect HaCaT keratinocytes from DNA damage caused by UVB-irradiation and enhance wound healing by increasing the migratory and proliferative potential of cells. Furthermore, the external application of EBNP could effectively repair high glycolic acid concentration-induced skin burns in mice. A total of 1 188 peptides, predominantly the hydrophobic amino acids (e.g., Leu, Val, Tyr, Phe), were identified in the EBNP by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Molecular docking showed that hydrophobic tripeptides from EBNP had a good binding affinity to proton-dependent oligopeptide transporter PepT1. Our data indicated that the hydrophobic amino acid-rich EBNP plays an important role in skin wound healing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interleukin-17 (IL-17) has been hypothesized to be involved in ischemic cardiovascular disease (ICVD). However, the association of IL-17 with ICVD remained unclear. The aim of this study was to systematically analyze the available evidence regarding the association between IL-17 and ICVD. METHODS We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases up to October 2023 to identify publications on the association between IL-17 and ICVD. The merged results were analyzed using a random effects model for meta-analysis and subgroup analysis. RESULTS A total of 955 publications were initially identified in our search and screened; six studies were eventually included in the analysis. The average age of study participants was 60.3 ± 12.6 years and 65.5% were men. There was a high degree of heterogeneity among studies. The results showed that IL-17 level were higher in the case group than those in the control group (standardized mean difference, SMD = 1.60, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.53-2.66, P = 0.003). In sensitivity analysis, the merged results showed good robustness. Additionally, subgroup analysis showed that race and ethnicity, sample size, and detection methods were significant factors influencing heterogeneity in the published studies. CONCLUSION Our finding revealed that increased IL-17 level contributed to the development of ICVD, suggesting IL-17 as a potential risk marker. Further research is needed to establish IL-17 as a therapeutic biomarker of ICVD.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of obesity on the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) following laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Methods: A total of 150 patients with pathological diagnosis of colorectal cancer who accepted laparoscopic colorectal excision from January to May 2023 were retrospectively recruited. All the patients scored 26 points or more in the Assess Respiratory Risk in Surgical Patients in Catalonia (ARISCAT) model, making them all in intermediate to high risks of PPCs. Patients were divided into obesity group and non-obesity group depending on whether they were obese or not. Propensity score matching (1∶1) was performed to achieve the balance of clinicopathological characteristics with the matching factors of age, sex, respiratory complications and ARISCAT score. A total of 96 patients were eventually enrolled, with 48 patients in obesity group and 48 patients in non-obesity group. Besides, the patients were divided into 25°-30° Trendelenburg subgroup and ±10°-15° Trendelenburg subgroup according to surgical sites for further analysis. The incidence of PPCs, the intraoperative airway pressure and blood biomarker expression of lung injury, including soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) and angiopoietin-2 (ANG2) at postoperative day (POD) 1 and POD3 between the two groups were compared. The relationship between obesity and incidence of PPCs within 30 postoperative days were analyzed with unifactorial Cox proportional hazard model. Results: The obesity group was comprised of 35 males and 13 females with a median age of 60 (49, 69) years, and the non-obesity group was comprised of 35 males and 13 females with a median age of 60 (52, 67) years. The incidence of PPCs was 50.0% (24/48) in the obesity group, which was higher than 20.8% (10/48) in the non-obesity group and the incidence of grade Ⅰ PPCs and microatelectasis were 31.3% (15/48) and 33.3% (16/48), higher than the 12.5% (6/48) and 12.5% (6/48) of the non-obesity group (all P<0.05). The peak airway pressure (Ppeak) and plateau airway pressure (Pplat) of patients in obesity group were 34.0(31.5, 36.5) and 30.0(27.0, 32.0) cmH2O(1 cmH2O=0.098 kPa), which were significantly higher than the 26.0 (24.0, 29.5) and 22.0 (21.0, 26.5) cmH2O of the non-obesity group (all P<0.001). The ANG2 level of the obesity group at POD3 was 11.9 (8.4, 16.5) μg/L, which was higher than 9.2 (6.0, 12.3) μg/L of the non-obesity group (P=0.045). In 25°-30°Trendelenburg subgroup, the incidence of PPCs in obese patients were significantly higher than that of non-obese patients [41.4% (12/29) vs 11.4% (4/35), P=0.005]. In ±10°-15°Trendelenburg subgroup, no significant difference was found in PPCs incidence between obese and non-obese patients [63.2% (12/19) vs 46.2% (6/13), P=0.215]. The unifactorial Cox proportional hazard model analysis showed that obesity was a risk factor of PPCs in 30 postoperative days (HR=3.015, 95%CI: 1.438-6.321, P=0.001). Conclusion: In patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery with intermediate to high risk of PPCs, obesity raises intraoperative airway pressure and aggravates intraoperative lung endothelial injury. Obesity is a risk factor of PPCs in 30 postoperative days.

Abstract
KEY MESSAGE Through comprehensive genomic and transcriptomic analyses, we identified a set of 23 genes that act up- or downstream of erucic acid content (EAC) production in rapeseed seeds. We selected example genes to showcase the distribution of single nucleotide polymorphisms, haplotypes associated with EAC phenotypes, and the creation of molecular markers differentiating low EAC and high EAC genotypes. Erucic acid content (EAC) is a crucial trait in rapeseed, with low LEAC oil recognized for its health benefits and high EA oil holding industrial value. Despite its significance, the genomic consequences of intensive LEAC-cultivar selection and the genetic basis underlying EA regulation remain largely unexplored. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted selective signal analyses, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and transcriptome analyses. Our investigation unveiled the genetic footprints resulting from LEAC selection in germplasm populations, drawing attention to specific loci that contribute to enriching diversity. By integrating GWAS and transcriptome analyses, we identified a set of 23 genes that play a significant role in determining EAC in seeds or are downstream consequences of EA-level alterations. These genes have emerged as promising candidates for elucidating the potential mechanisms governing EAC in rapeseed. To exemplify the findings, we selected specific genes to demonstrate the distribution of single nucleotide polymorphisms and haplotypes associated with different EAC phenotypes. Additionally, we showcased to develop molecular markers distinguishing between LEAC and high EAC genotypes.

Abstract
Long noncoding RNAs have been reported to be involved in the development of breast cancer. LINC01572 was previously reported to promote the development of various tumors. However, the potential biological function of LINC01572 in breast cancer remains largely unknown. R language was used to perform bioinformatic analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas data. The expression level of RNAs was examined by RT-qPCR. The effect of knocking down or overexpression LINC01572 in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines was evaluated by detecting cell proliferation, migrant action. RNA immunoprecipitation assay and RNA pull-down assay were performed to explore the regulatory relationship between LINC01572, EIF4A3, and β-catenin. Bioinformatics analysis identifies LINC01572 as an oncogene of breast cancer. LINC01572 is over-expressed in TNBC tissues and cell lines, correlated with poor clinical prognosis in BC patients. Cell function studies confirmed that LINC01572 facilitated the proliferation and migration of TNBC cells in both vivo and vitro. Mechanistically, β-catenin mRNA and EIF4A3 combine spatially to form a complex, LINC01572 helps transport this complex from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, thereby facilitating the translation of β-catenin. Our findings confirm that LINC01572 acts as a tumor promoter and may act as a biomarker in TNBC. In addition, novel molecular regulatory relationships involving LINC01572/EIF4A3/β-catenin are critical to the development of TNBC, which led to a new understanding of the mechanisms of TNBC progression and shows a new target for precision treatment for TNBC.

Macrophage-specific FGFR1 deletion alleviates high-fat-diet-induced liver inflammation by inhibiting the MAPKs/TNF pathways. Acta Pharmacol Sin 2024; 45:988-1001. Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common metabolic disease that is substantially associated with obesity-induced chronic inflammation. Macrophage activation and macrophage-medicated inflammation play crucial roles in the development and progression of NAFLD. Furthermore, fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) has been shown to be essentially involved in macrophage activation. This study investigated the role of FGFR1 in the NAFLD pathogenesis and indicated that a high-fat diet (HFD) increased p-FGFR1 levels in the mouse liver, which is associated with increased macrophage infiltration. In addition, macrophage-specific FGFR1 knockout or administration of FGFR1 inhibitor markedly protected the liver from HFD-induced lipid accumulation, fibrosis, and inflammatory responses. The mechanistic study showed that macrophage-specific FGFR1 knockout alleviated HFD-induced liver inflammation by suppressing the activation of MAPKs and TNF signaling pathways and reduced fat deposition in hepatocytes, thereby inhibiting the activation of hepatic stellate cells. In conclusion, the results of this research revealed that FGFR1 could protect the liver of HFD-fed mice by inhibiting MAPKs/TNF-mediated inflammatory responses in macrophages. Therefore, FGFR1 can be employed as a target to prevent the development and progression of NAFLD.

Abstract
Methane (CH4) is a potent gas produced by ruminants, and new measurement techniques are required to generate large datasets suitable for genetic analysis. One such technique are portable accumulation chambers (PAC), a short-term sampling method. The objectives of the current study were to explore the relationship between CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) output measured using both PAC and respiration chambers (RC) in growing lambs, and separately investigate the relationship among CH4, CO2 and measured ad libitum DM intake (DMI). Methane, CO2 and DMI were measured on 30 Suffolk and 30 Texel ewe lambs (age 253 ± 12 days) using the RC and PAC sequentially. The experiment was conducted over a 14-day period, with DMI measured from days 1 to 14; measurements in RC were conducted from days 10 to 12, while measurements in PAC were taken twice, the day immediately prior to the lambs entering the RC (day 9; PAC Pre-RC) and on the day lambs exited the RC (day 13; PAC Post-RC). Greater CH4 and CO2 output was measured in the RC than in the PAC (P < 0.01); similarly mean CH4 yield was greater when measured in the RC (15.39 ± 0.452 g CH4/kg DMI) compared to PAC (8.01 ± 0.767 g CH4/kg DMI). A moderate correlation of 0.37 was found between CH4 output measured in PAC Pre-RC and the RC, the corresponding regression coefficient of CH4 output measured in the RC regressed on CH4 output measured in PAC Pre-RC was close to unity (0.74; SE 0.224). The variance of CH4 and CO2 output within the measurement technique did not differ from each other (P > 0.05). Moderate to strong correlations were found between CH4 and CO2 per kg of live weight and CH4 and CO2 yield. Results from this study highlight the suitability of PAC as a ranking tool to rank animals based on their gaseous output when compared to the RC. However, repeated measurements separated by several days may be beneficial if precise rankings are required. Given the close to unity regression coefficient of CH4 output measured in the RC regressed on CH4 output measured in PAC Pre-RC suggests that PAC could also be potentially used to estimate absolute CH4 output; however, further research is required to substantiate this claim. When DMI is unknown, CH4 and CO2 per kg of live weight are a suitable alternative to the measurement of CH4 and CO2 yield.

Abstract
Hydroformylation is an industrial process for the production of aldehydes from alkenes1,2. Regioselective hydroformylation of propene to high-value n-butanal is particularly important, owing to a wide range of bulk applications of n-butanal in the manufacture of various necessities in human daily life3. Supported rhodium (Rh) hydroformylation catalysts, which often excel in catalyst recyclability, ease of separation and adaptability for continuous-flow processes, have been greatly exploited4. Nonetheless, they usually consist of rotationally flexible and sterically unconstrained Rh hydride dicarbonyl centres, only affording limited regioselectivity to n-butanal5-8. Here we show that proper encapsulation of Rh species comprising Rh(I)-gem-dicarbonyl centres within a MEL zeolite framework allows the breaking of the above model. The optimized catalyst exhibits more than 99% regioselectivity to n-butanal and more than 99% selectivity to aldehydes at a product formation turnover frequency (TOF) of 6,500 h-1, surpassing the performance of all heterogeneous and most homogeneous catalysts developed so far. Our comprehensive studies show that the zeolite framework can act as a scaffold to steer the reaction pathway of the intermediates confined in the space between the zeolite framework and Rh centres towards the exclusive formation of n-butanal.

Abstract
Lung adenocarcinoma is a malignant tumor with high morbidity and mortality. ZBTB16 plays a double role in various tumors; however, the potential mechanism of ZBTB16 in the pathophysiology of lung adenocarcinoma has yet to be elucidated. We herein observed a decreased expression of ZBTB16 mRNA and protein in lung adenocarcinoma and a significantly increased DNA methylation level of ZBTB16 in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Analysis of public databases and patients' clinical data indicated a close association between ZBTB16 and patient survival. Ectopic expression of ZBTB16 in lung adenocarcinoma cells significantly inhibited cell proliferation, invasion, and migration. It also induced cell cycle arrest in the S phase. Meanwhile, mitotic catastrophe was induced, and DNA damage and apoptosis occurred. In line with these findings, the overexpression of ZBTB16 in xenograft mice resulted in the inhibition of tumor growth. Comprehensive analysis showed that WDHD1 was a potential target for ZBTB16. The overexpression of both isoforms of WDHD1 significantly reversed the ZBTB16-mediated inhibition of lung adenocarcinoma proliferation and cell cycle. These studies suggest that ZBTB16 impedes the progression of lung adenocarcinoma by interfering with WDHD1 transcription, making it a potential novel therapeutic target in the management of lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
Obesity and its related metabolic diseases bring great challenges to public health. In-depth understanding on the efficacy of weight-loss interventions is critical for long-term weight control. Our study demonstrated the comparable efficacy of exercise (EX), intermittent fasting (IF), or the change of daily diet from an unhealthy to a normal chow (DR) for weight reduction, but largely divergently affected metabolic status and transcriptome of subcutaneous fat, scapular brown fat, skeletal muscles and liver in high-fat-high-fructose diet (HFHF) induced obese mice. EX and IF reduced systematic inflammation, improved glucose and lipid metabolism in liver and muscle, and amino acid metabolism and thermogenesis in adipose tissues. EX exhibited broad regulatory effects on TCA cycle, carbon metabolism, thermogenesis, propanoate-, fatty acid and amino acid metabolism across multiple tissues. IF prominently affected genes involved in mitophagy and autophagy in adipose tissues and core genes involved in butanoate metabolism in liver. DR, however, failed to improve metabolic homeostasis and biological dysfunctions in obese mice. Notably, by exploring potential inter-organ communication, we identified an obesity-resistant-like gene profile that were strongly correlated with HFHF induced metabolic derangements and could predict the degree of weight regain induced by the follow-up HFHF diet. Among them, 12 genes (e.g., Gdf15, Tfrc, Cdv3, Map2k4, and Nqo1) were causally associated with human metabolic traits, i.e., BMI, body fat mass, HbA1C, fasting glucose, and cholesterol. Our findings provide critical groundwork for improved understanding of the impacts of weight-loss interventions on host metabolism. The identified genes predicting weight regain may be considered regulatory targets for improving long-term weight control.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the relationship between gut microbiota and its metabolite dysregulation and postoperative cognitive dysfunction in elderly male C57BL/6J mice after laparotomy exploration. Methods: A total of 48 specific pathogen-free (SPF) male C57BL/6J mice, aged 16-17 months, were divided into two groups by random number table method: control group (n=24) and operation group (n=24). Mice in the operation group were induced with 1.4% isoflurane for 15 minutes, followed by a 10 minutes exploratory laparotomy anesthetized with 1.4% isoflurane and 100% oxygen, and anesthesia continued for 2 hours after surgery. Mice in control group were put in 100% oxygen for 2 hours. Feces and venous blood samples of both groups were collected 48 hours after surgery. Changes in the abundance and diversity of intestinal bacteria in the feces were detected by 16S rDNA gene sequencing. Functional changes of fecal metabolic profiles were detected by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS) metabolomics and differential metabolite functions were analyzed. The serum level of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were detected by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The cognitive function of the mice was detected by Morris water maze test 3 days after operation. Results: The postoperative escape latency of mice in control group and operation group was (22.0±4.9) and (35.0±5.1) s, and the target quadrant residence time was (26.0±3.7) and (16.0±2.9) s, respectively. Compared with the control group, the postoperative escape latency of mice in the operation group was prolonged (P=0.035), and the residence time in the target quadrant was reduced (P=0.006). The difference of intestinal flora between the two groups was comparable. The expression levels of Escherichia coli, shigella and clostridium in the operation group were up-regulated, while the expression levels of rumen bacteria and butyricobacteria were down-regulated. Fecal metabolic profiles of mice in control group and operation group were obtained by LC/MS, and 14 and 21 different metabolites were screened in positive and negative ion modes, respectively. The different metabolites in positive ion mode were glutamic acid, 2-indoleic acid, kynuuric acid and glyceraldehyde. The negative ion pattern differential metabolites are methionine, aspartic acid, L-threonine, tyrosyl-threonine and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid. The identified differential metabolite pathways are mainly involved in amino acid, fatty acid and tryptophan metabolism and nucleotide synthesis. There were no significant differences in serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α between the two groups (all P>0.05). Conclusion: The dysregulated changes of gut microbiota and its metabolites are correlated with the occurrence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction in elderly male C57BL/6J mice. Anesthesia and surgery alter the structure of mice intestinal bacteria on the level of abundance, and change the metabolic balance and feces metabolomic phenotype.

Abstract
Drug resistance is the major difficulty in treatment of lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). This study aims to explore drug response-related miRNAs (DRmiRNAs) based on multi-omics research. We identified DRmiRNAs of LUSC with a multi-omics integrated system that combines expression data of microRNA, lncRNA, mRNA, methylation levels, somatic mutations. After identifying DRmiRNAs, we screened and validated of the target mRNAs of DRmiRNAs through Targetscan and the miRDB database. Then, Real-time PCR and Western blot assays were used to estimate the expression of DRmiRNAs and target protein, and the dual-luciferase assays were used to confirm the interaction of DRmiRNAs and target mRNA. Furthermore, CCK-8 (Cell Counting Kit-8) assays were used to evaluate cell proliferation and drug sensitivity. After integrated analysis, hsa-miR-185-5p was identified as DRmiRNA based on multi-omics data. Through Targetscan and miRDB database, the possible target mRNAs were obtained and PCDHA11 was validated as a target mRNA of miR-185-5p by real-time PCR, Western blot assays and dual-luciferase assays. CCK-8 assays and clone formation assays showed that the proliferation of miR-185-5p mimics was significantly slower than that of miR-185-5p inhibitors, which means overexpression of miR-185-5p enhanced the anticancer effects of cisplatin, whereas the downregulation of miR-185-5p reduced the effects. Furthermore, the proliferation of silencing PCDHA11 was significantly slower than that of overexpression of PCDHA11, which means PCDHA11 overexpression weakened the anticancer effects of cisplatin, and silencing PCDHA11 enhanced the effects. This study demonstrated that miR-185-5p was involved in chemoresistance of LUSC cells to cisplatin partly via down-regulating PCDHA11, which may promote understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of drug response.

Abstract
Breast cancer has the highest global incidence and mortality rates among all cancer types. Abnormal expression of the Annexin family has been observed in different malignant tumors, including upregulated ANXA9 in breast cancer. We found highly expressed ANXA9 in metastatic breast cancer tissues, which is correlated with breast cancer progression. In vitro, the functional experiments indicated ANXA9 influenced breast cancer proliferation, motility, invasion, and apoptosis; in vivo, downregulation of ANXA9 suppressed breast cancer xenograft tumor growth and lung metastasis. Mechanically, on one side, we found that ANXA9 could mediate S100A4 and therefore regulate AKT/mTOR/STAT3 pathway to participate p53/Bcl-2 apoptosis; on the other side, we found ANXA9 transferred S100A4 from cells into the tumor microenvironment and mediated the excretion of cytokines IL-6, IL-8, CCL2, and CCL5 to participate angiogenesis via self- phosphorylation at site Ser2 and site Thr69. Our findings demonstrate significant involvement of ANXA9 in promoting breast cancer progression, thereby suggesting that therapeutic intervention via targeting ANXA9 may be effective in treating metastatic breast cancer.

Abstract
The vast bulk of polystyrene (PS), a major type of plastic polymers, ends up in landfills, which takes up to thousands of years to decompose in nature. Chemical recycling promises to enable lower-energy pathways and minimal environmental impacts compared with traditional incineration and mechanical recycling. Herein, we demonstrated that methanol as a hydrogen supplier assisted the depolymerization of PS (denoted as PS-MAD) into alkylbenzenes over a heterogeneous catalyst composed of Ru nanoparticles on SiO2. PS-MAD achieved a high yield of liquid products which accounted for 93.2 wt % of virgin PS at 280 °C for 6 h with the production rate of 118.1 mmolcarbon gcatal. -1 h-1. The major components were valuable alkylbenzenes (monocyclic aromatics and diphenyl alkanes), the sum of which occupied 84.3 wt % of liquid products. According to mechanistic studies, methanol decomposition dominates the hydrogen supply during PS-MAD, thereby restraining PS aromatization which generates by-products of fused polycyclic arenes and polyphenylenes.

Abstract
The extensive application of nuclear technology has increased the potential of uncontrolled radiation exposure to the public. Since skin is the largest organ, radiation-induced skin injury remains a serious medical concern. Organisms evolutionally develop distinct strategies to protect against environment insults and the related research may bring novel insights into therapeutics development. Here, 26 increased peptides are identified in skin tissues of frogs (Pelophylax nigromaculatus) exposed to electron beams, among which four promoted the wound healing of irradiated skin in rats. Specifically, radiation-induced frog skin peptide-2 (RIFSP-2), from histone proteolysis exerted membrane permeability property, maintained cellular homeostasis, and reduced pyroptosis of irradiated cells with decreased TBK1 phosphorylation. Subsequently, stearyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) is identified, a critical enzyme in biogenesis of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) as a direct target of RIFSP-2 based on streptavidin-biotin system. The lipidomic analysis further assured the restrain of MUFAs biogenesis by RIFSP-2 following radiation. Moreover, the decreased MUFA limited radiation-induced and STING-mediated inflammation response. In addition, genetic depletion or pharmacological inhibition of STING counteracted the decreased pyroptosis by RIFSP-2 and retarded tissue repair process. Altogether, RIFSP-2 restrains radiation-induced activation of SCD1-MUFA-STING axis. Thus, the stress-induced amphibian peptides can be a bountiful source of novel radiation mitigators.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart failure (HF) is a heterogeneous syndrome that affects millions worldwide, resulting in substantial health and economic burdens. However, the molecular mechanism of HF pathogenesis remains unclear. METHODS HF-related key genes were screened by a bioinformatics approach. The impacts of HAPLN1 knockdown on Angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced AC16 cells were assessed through a series of cell function experiments. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure levels of oxidative stress and apoptosis-related factors. The HF rat model was induced by subcutaneous injection isoprenaline and histopathologic changes in the cardiac tissue were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and echocardiographic index. Downstream pathways regulated by HAPLN1 was predicted through bioinformatics and then confirmed in vivo and in vitro by western blot. RESULTS Six hub genes were screened, of which HAPLN1, FMOD, NPPB, NPPA, and COMP were overexpressed, whereas NPPC was downregulated in HF. Further research found that silencing HAPLN1 promoted cell viability and reduced apoptosis in Ang II-induced AC16 cells. HAPLN1 knockdown promoted left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular fraction shortening (LVFS), while decreasing left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV) in the HF rat model. HAPLN1 knockdown promoted the levels of GSH and suppressed the levels of MDA, LDH, TNF-α, and IL-6. Mechanistically, silencing HAPLN1 activated the PKA pathway, which were confirmed both in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSION HAPLN1 knockdown inhibited the progression of HF by activating the PKA pathway, which may provide novel perspectives on the management of HF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of genital Mollicutes infection transition with adverse pregnancy outcomes was insignificant among general pregnant women, but there remains a paucity of evidence linking this relationship in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) women. The aim was to investigate the association between genital Mollicutes infection and transition and adverse pregnancy outcomes in GDM women, and to explore whether this association still exist when Mollicutes load varied. METHODS We involved pregnant women who attended antenatal care in Chongqing, China. After inclusion and exclusion criteria, we conducted a single-center cohort study of 432 GDM women with pregnancy outcomes from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021. The main outcome was adverse pregnancy outcomes, including premature rupture of membrane (PROM), fetal distress, macrosomia and others. The exposure was Mollicutes infection, including Ureaplasma urealyticum (Uu) and Mycoplasma hominis (Mh) collected in both the second and the third trimesters, and testing with polymerase chain reaction method. The logistic regression models were used to estimate the relationship between Mollicutes infection and adverse pregnancy outcomes. RESULTS Among 432 GDM women, 241 (55.79%) were infected with genital Mollicutes in either the second or third trimester of pregnancy. At the end of the pregnancy follow-up, 158 (36.57%) participants had adverse pregnancy outcomes, in which PROM, fetal distress and macrosomia were the most commonly observed adverse outcomes. Compared with the uninfected group, the Mollicutes (+/-) group showed no statistical significant increase in PROM (OR = 1.05, 95% CI:0.51 ∼ 2.08) and fetal distress (OR = 1.21, 95% CI: 0.31 ∼ 3.91). Among the 77 participants who were both Uu positive in the second and third trimesters, 38 participants presented a declined Uu load and 39 presented an increased Uu load. The Uu increased group had a 2.95 odds ratio (95% CI: 1.10~8.44) for adverse pregnancy outcomes. CONCLUSION Mollicutes infection and transition during trimesters were not statistically associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes in GDM women. However, among those consistent infections, women with increasing Uu loads showed increased risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes. For GDM women with certain Mollicutes infection and colonization status, quantitative screening for vaginal infection at different weeks of pregnancy was recommended to provide personalized fertility treatment.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of deep neuromuscular blockade (DNMB) combined with low pneumoperitoneum pressure anesthesia strategy on postoperative pain in patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial. One hundred and twenty patients who underwent laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Cancer Hospital of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from December 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023 were selected and randomly divided into two groups by random number table method. Moderate neuromuscular blockade [train of four stimulations count (TOFC)=1-2] was maintained in patients of the control group (group C, n=60) and pneumoperitoneum pressure level was set at 15 mmHg(1 mmHg=0.133 kPa). DNMB [post-tonic stimulation count (PTC)=1-2] was maintained in patients of the DNMB combined with low pneumoperitoneum pressuregroup (group D, n=60) and pneumoperitoneum pressure level was set at 10 mmHg. The primary measurement was incidence of moderate to severe pain at 1 h after surgery. The secondary measurements the included incidence of moderate to severe pain at 1, 2, 3, 5 d and 3 months after surgery, the incidence of rescue analgesic drug use, the doses of sufentanil in analgesic pumps, surgical rating scale (SRS) score, the incidence of postoperative residual neuromuscular block, postoperative recovery [evaluated with length of post anesthesia care unit (PACU) stay, time of first exhaust and defecation after surgery and length of hospital stay] and postoperative inflammation conditions [evaluated with serum concentration of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 at 1 d and 3 d after surgery]. Results: The incidence of moderate to severe pain in group D 1 h after surgery was 13.3% (8/60), lower than 30.0% (18/60) of group C (P<0.05). The incidence of rescue analgesia in group D at 1 h and 1 d after surgery were 13.3% (8/60) and 4.2% (5/120), respectively, lower than 30.0% (18/60) and 12.5% (15/120) of group C (both P<0.05). The IL-1β level in group D was (4.1±1.8)ng/L at 1 d after surgery, which was lower than (4.9±2.6) ng/L of group C (P=0.048). The IL-6 level in group D was (2.0±0.7)ng/L at 3 d after surgery, which was lower than (2.4±1.1) ng/L of group C (P=0.018). There was no significant difference in the doses of sufentanil in analgesic pumps, intraoperative SRS score, incidence of neuromuscular block residue, time spent in PACU, time of first exhaust and defecation after surgery, incidence of nausea and vomiting, and length of hospitalization between the two groups (all P>0.05). Conclusion: DNMB combined with low pneumoperitoneum pressure anesthesia strategy alleviates the early-stage pain in patients after laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Abstract
Universal stress proteins are a class of proteins widely present in bacteria, archaea, plants, and invertebrates, playing essential roles in bacterial adaptation to various environmental stresses. The functions of bacterial universal stress proteins are versatile, including resistance to oxidative stress, maintenance of cell wall integrity, DNA damage repair, regulation of cell division and growth, among others. When facing stresses such as temperature changes, pH shifts, fluctuations in oxygen concentration, and exposure to toxins, these proteins can bind to specific DNA sequences and rapidly adjust bacterial metabolic pathways and gene expression patterns to adapt to the new environment. In summary, bacterial universal stress proteins play a crucial role in bacterial adaptability and survival. A comprehensive understanding of bacterial stress response mechanisms and the development of new antibacterial strategies are of great significance. This review summarizes the research progress on the structure, function, and regulatory factors of universal stress proteins in clinically relevant bacteria, aiming to facilitate deeper investigations by clinicians and researchers into universal stress proteins.

Abstract
This article addresses distributed robust learning-based control for consensus formation tracking of multiple underwater vessels, in which the system parameters of the marine vessels are assumed to be entirely unknown and subject to the modeling mismatch, oceanic disturbances, and noises. Toward this end, graph theory is used to allow us to synthesize the distributed controller with a stability guarantee. Due to the fact that the parameter uncertainties only arise in the vessels' dynamic model, the backstepping control technique is then employed. Subsequently, to overcome the difficulties in handling time-varying and unknown systems, an online learning procedure is developed in the proposed distributed formation control protocol. Moreover, modeling errors, environmental disturbances, and measurement noises are considered and tackled by introducing a neurodynamics model in the controller design to obtain a robust solution. Then, the stability analysis of the overall closed-loop system under the proposed scheme is provided to ensure the robust adaptive performance at the theoretical level. Finally, extensive simulation experiments are conducted to further verify the efficacy of the presented distributed control protocol.

Abstract
China has become one of the most serious countries suffering from biological invasions in the world. In the context of global climate change, invasive alien species (IAS) are likely to invade a wider area, posing greater ecological and economic threats in China. Western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), which is known as one of the 100 most invasive alien species, has distributed widely in southern China and is gradually spreading to the north, causing serious ecological damage and economic losses. However, its distribution in China is still unclear. Hence, there is an urgent need for a more convenient way to detect and monitor the distribution of G. affinis to put forward specific management. Therefore, we detected the distribution of G. affinis in China under current and future climate change by combing Maxent modeling prediction and eDNA verification, which is a more time-saving and reliable method to estimate the distribution of species. The Maxent modeling showed that G. affinis has a broad habitat suitability in China (especially in southern China) and would continue to spread in the future with ongoing climate change. However, eDNA monitoring showed that occurrences can already be detected in regions that Maxent still categorized as unsuitable. Besides temperature, precipitation and human influence were the most important environmental factors affecting the distribution of G. affinis in China. In addition, by environmental DNA analysis, we verified the presence of G. affinis predicted by Maxent in the Qinling Mountains where the presence of G. affinis had not been previously recorded.

Abstract
Radiation-induced intestinal damage (RIID) is a common side effect of radiotherapy in patients with abdominopelvic malignancies. Gap junctions are special structures consisting of connexins (Cxs). This study aimed to investigate the expression and role of connexins in RIID and underlying mechanism. In this study, a calcein-AM fluorescence probe was used to detect changes in gap junctional intercellular communication in intestinal epithelial IEC-6 cells. Our results show that gap junctional intercellular communication of IEC-6 cells was reduced at 6, 12, 24, and 48 h after irradiation, with the most pronounced effect at 24 h. Western blotting and immunofluorescence results showed that the expression of Cx43, but not other connexins, was reduced in irradiated intestinal epithelial cells. Silencing of Cx43 reduced gap junctional intercellular communication between irradiated intestinal epithelial cells with increased ROS and intracellular Ca2+ levels. Furthermore, knockdown of Cx43 reduced the number of clonal clusters, decreased cell proliferation with increased cytotoxicity and apoptosis. Western blotting results showed that silencing of Cx43 resulted in changed γ-H2AX and PI3K/AKT pathway proteins in irradiated intestinal epithelial cells. Administration of the PI3K/AKT pathway inhibitor LY294002 inhibited the radioprotective effects in Cx43-overexpressing intestinal epithelial cells. Our study demonstrated that Cx43 expression is decreased by ionizing radiation, which facilitates the radioprotection of intestinal epithelial cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polygonatum kingianum Coll. & Hemsl (PK), a prominent medicine and food homology plant, has been consumed as a decoction from boiling water for thousands of years. 'Nine Steaming Nine Sun-drying' processing has been considered an effective method for enriching tonic properties, but studies investigating such impacts on PK and underlying mechanisms are extremely rare. RESULTS We first demonstrated substantial improvements in the anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperglycemia effects of the Nine Steaming Nine Sun-drying processed PK water extracts compared with crude PK in cell models (i.e., HepG2 and Raw 264.7 cells). We then integrated foodomics and network pharmacology analysis to uncover the key compounds responsible for the improved benefits. A total of 551 metabolites of PK extracts were identified, including polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, and organic acids. During processing, 204 metabolites were enhanced, and 32 metabolites were recognized as key constituents of processed PK responsible for the improved health-promoting activities, which may affect PI3K-Akt-, MAPK-, and HIF-1 pathways. We further confirmed the high affinity between identified key constituents of processed PK and their predicted acting targets using molecular docking. CONCLUSION Our results provide novel insights into bioactive compounds of processed PK, elaborating the rationality of processing from the perspective of tonic effects. Consuming processed PK could be an efficacious strategy to combat the high prevalence of metabolic diseases that currently affect millions of people worldwide. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Measurements of All-Particle Energy Spectrum and Mean Logarithmic Mass of Cosmic Rays from 0.3 to 30 PeV with LHAASO-KM2A. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 132:131002. Abstract
We present the measurements of all-particle energy spectrum and mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the energy range of 0.3-30 PeV using data collected from LHAASO-KM2A between September 2021 and December 2022, which is based on a nearly composition-independent energy reconstruction method, achieving unprecedented accuracy. Our analysis reveals the position of the knee at 3.67±0.05±0.15 PeV. Below the knee, the spectral index is found to be -2.7413±0.0004±0.0050, while above the knee, it is -3.128±0.005±0.027, with the sharpness of the transition measured with a statistical error of 2%. The mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays is almost heavier than helium in the whole measured energy range. It decreases from 1.7 at 0.3 PeV to 1.3 at 3 PeV, representing a 24% decline following a power law with an index of -0.1200±0.0003±0.0341. This is equivalent to an increase in abundance of light components. Above the knee, the mean logarithmic mass exhibits a power law trend towards heavier components, which is reversal to the behavior observed in the all-particle energy spectrum. Additionally, the knee position and the change in power-law index are approximately the same. These findings suggest that the knee observed in the all-particle spectrum corresponds to the knee of the light component, rather than the medium-heavy components.

Abstract
Polar molecular crystals, with their densely stacked polar nonlinear optical (NLO) active units, are favored for their large second harmonic generation (SHG) responses and birefringence. However, their potential for practical applications as Infrared (IR) NLO materials has historically been underappreciated due to the weak inter-molecular interaction forces that may compromise their physicochemical properties. In this study, we propose molecular crystals with polar molecular cages as a treasure-house for the development of superior IR NLO materials and a representative system, binary chalcogenide molecular crystals, composed of [P4 Sn ] (n=3-9) polar molecular cages, is introduced. These crystals may not only achieve wide band gap, large SHG response, and birefringence in a single structure, but also exhibit favorable physicochemical properties. We subsequently obtained a polar molecular crystal, α-P4 S5 , which demonstrated exceptional IR optical properties, including a strong SHG response (1.1×AGS), wide band gap (3.02 eV), large birefringence (0.134@2050 nm), and a broad transmission range (0.41-14.7 μm). Moreover, it showed excellent water resistance and hardness. These findings highlight the potential of polar molecular crystals as a promising platform for the development of high-performance IR NLO materials.

Abstract
LncRNA associated with immune cell infiltration in tumor microenvironment (TME) may be a potential therapeutic target for lung adenocarcinoma. We established a machine learning (ML) model based on 3896 samples characterized by the degree of immune cell infiltration, and further screened the key lncRNA. In vitro experiments were applied to validate the prediction. Treg is the key immune cell in the TME of lung adenocarcinoma, and the degree of infiltration is negatively correlated with the prognosis. PCBP1-AS1 may affect the infiltration of Tregs by regulating the TGF-β pathway, which is a potential predictor of clinical response to immunotherapy. PCBP1-AS1 regulates cell proliferation, cell cycle, invasion, migration, and apoptosis in lung adenocarcinoma. The results of clinical sample staining and in vitro experiments showed that PCBP1-AS1 was negatively correlated with Treg infiltration and TGF-β expression. Tregs and related lncRNA PCBP1-AS1 can be used as targets for the diagnosis and treatment of lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study is intended to examine the efficacy of a non-irrigated bipolar RF clamp and explore the factors that can influence its performance on beating human hearts using the electrophysiology mapping method. METHODS A total of 83 atrial fibrillation (AF) patients were included in this study. Based on the Body mass index (BMI, kg/m2), the AF patients were divided into the normal group (18.5 ≤ BMI < 25) and the overweight or obese group (BMI ≥ 25). They all underwent a stand-alone surgical ablation through our off-pump biatrial mini-maze procedure. After we completed each time of ablation, the achievement of PV isolation was checked using the electrophysiology mapping method. The number of ablation times to achieve the PV isolation on the left and right PVs was recorded respectively. RESULTS 86.7% (72/83) PV isolation on the LPV and 72.3% (60/83) PV isolation on the RPV could be achieved respectively after performing a single time of surgical ablation. Three times of ablations resulted in 100.0% PV isolation on the left and right PVs. In the normal BMI group, the ratio of patients who achieved a complete PV isolation after a single time of ablation was 83.7% (36/43), which was higher than the 60.0% (24/40) in the overweight or obese group. CONCLUSIONS Performing three times of ablations resulted in 100% PV isolation on the left and right PVs. The bipolar RF clamp had a better performance on the LPV than on the RPV. The patients' BMI also influenced the Atricure clamp' s performance.

Abstract
Clinical outcomes remain unsatisfactory in patients with pancreatic cancer (PAC). In this study, through single-cell sequencing, we identified eight cell subpopulations in the tumor microenvironment (TME). Redimensional clustering of epithelial cells, myeloid cells, and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) revealed heterogeneity in the TME of PAC. Intercellular communication analysis showed strong direct interactions between matrix CAFs, inflammatory CAFs, and epithelial cells. Additionally, we found that the SPP1-associated pathway was activated in monocytes, whereas the vascular endothelial growth factor-associated pathway was activated in epithelial cells. These results improve the understanding of the TME of pancreatic cancer and provide a foundation for further studies on intratumoral heterogeneity. In addition, differentially expressed gene secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) was identified in pancreatic cancer, and functional experiments showed that SLPI had a strong impact on cell viability and apoptosis, which offers a potential therapy target for pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
Hypoxia is a key hallmark of solid tumors and can cause resistance to various treatments such as photodynamics and immunotherapy. Microenvironment-responsive gene editing provides a powerful tool to overcome hypoxia resistance and remodel hypoxic microenvironments for enhanced tumor therapy. Here, a light-enhanced hypoxia-responsive multifunctional nanocarrier is developed to perform spatiotemporal specific dual gene editing for enhanced photodynamic and immunotherapy in breast cancer. As a gated molecule of nanocarrier, the degradation of azobenzene moieties under hypoxic conditions triggers controllable release of Cas9 ribonucleoprotein in hypoxic site of the tumor. Hyaluronic acid is conjugated with chloramine e6 to coat mesoporous silica nanoparticles for targeted delivery in tumors and generation of high levels of reactive oxygen species, which can result in increased hypoxia levels for effective cleavage of azobenzene bonds to improve gene editing efficiency and reduce toxic side effects with light irradiation. Moreover, dual targeting HIF-1α and PD-L1 in the anoxic microenvironments can overcome hypoxia resistance and remodel immune microenvironments, which reduces tumor plasticity and resistance to photodynamic and immunotherapy. In summary, a light-enhanced hypoxia responsive nanocomposite is developed for controllable gene editing which holds great promise for synergistic hypoxia-resistant photodynamic and immunotherapy.

Abstract
β-Sitosterol is a type of phytosterol that occurs naturally in plants. Previous studies have shown that it has anti-oxidant, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anti-tumor effects, but it is unknown whether β-sitosterol treatment reduces the effects of ischemic stroke. Here we found that, in a mouse model of ischemic stroke induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion, β-sitosterol reduced the volume of cerebral infarction and brain edema, reduced neuronal apoptosis in brain tissue, and alleviated neurological dysfunction; moreover, β-sitosterol increased the activity of oxygen- and glucose-deprived cerebral cortex neurons and reduced apoptosis. Further investigation showed that the neuroprotective effects of β-sitosterol may be related to inhibition of endoplasmic reticulum stress caused by intracellular cholesterol accumulation after ischemic stroke. In addition, β-sitosterol showed high affinity for NPC1L1, a key transporter of cholesterol, and antagonized its activity. In conclusion, β-sitosterol may help treat ischemic stroke by inhibiting neuronal intracellular cholesterol overload/endoplasmic reticulum stress/apoptosis signaling pathways.

Abstract
Background There are many techniques to reduce anastomotic bleeding for the total arch replacement, but hemostasis is sometimes difficult to achieve after surgery for acute dissection, especially in patients with abnormal coagulation (AC). This study aimed to investigate the hemostatic effect and early efficacy of a pre-set bovine pericardium wrapper in the right heart system shunt for total arch replacement in patients with type A aortic dissection (TAAD) and preoperative AC. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 85 patients with TAAD and AC who underwent total arch replacement between January 2018 and December 2022. The patients were divided into two groups: the preset pericardium group (n=30) and the control group (n=55). Results There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of Bentall surgery (ascending aorta replacement with an aortic valve artificial vessel) and cardiac arrest time. However, compared to the control group, the preset pericardium group exhibited a shorter duration of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and operation (P<0.001). Additionally, the preset pericardium group required fewer transfusions of blood products and hemostatic drugs (P<0.05). Moreover, the preset pericardium group had lower 24-hour postoperative mediastinal drainage volume (P<0.001), a lower proportion of bedside hemofiltration (P=0.039), and a shorter duration of mechanical ventilation and stay in the intensive care unit (P=0.014). Although the preset pericardium group showed reductions in in-hospital mortality, re-exploration for bleeding, and neurologic dysfunction, these differences were not statistically significant compared to the control group. Conclusions This study represents the first investigation into the application of the preset wrapping technique in total arch replacement for TAAD with AC. The results demonstrate that this method can reduce the duration of CPB and operation, decrease postoperative bleeding, and minimize the need for blood transfusion and hemostatic drugs. Consequently, this technique may contribute to early postoperative recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Owing to the harsh environment in high-altitude areas, drivers experience significant driving stress. Compared with urban roads or expressways in low-altitude areas, the driving environment in high-altitude areas has distinct features, including mountainous environments and a higher proportion of trucks and buses. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of predicting stress levels through elements in the driving environment. METHODS Naturalistic driving tests were conducted on an expressway in Tibet. Driving stress was assessed using heart rate variability (HRV)-based indicators and classified using K-means clustering. A DeepLabv3 model was built to conduct semantic segmentation and extract environment elements from the driving scenarios recorded through a camera next to the driver's eyes. A decision tree and 4 other ensemble learning models based on decision trees were built to predict driving stress levels using the environment elements. RESULTS Fifty-six indicators were extracted from the driving environment. Results of the prediction models demonstrate that extreme gradient boosting has the best overall performance with the F1 score (harmonic mean of the precision and recall) and G-mean (geometric mean of sensitivity and specificity) reaching 0.855 and 0.890, respectively. Indicators based on the variation rate of trucks and buses have high feature importance and exhibit positive effects on driving stress. Indicators reflecting the proportion of mountain, road, and sky features negatively affect the expected levels of driving stress. Additionally, the mountain feature demonstrates multidimensional effects, because driving stress is positively affected by indicators of the variation rate for mountain elements. CONCLUSIONS This study validates the prediction of driving stress using environment elements in the driver's field of view and extends its application to high-altitude expressways with distinct environmental characteristics. This method provides a real-time, less intrusive, and safer method of driving stress assessment and prediction and also enhances the understanding of the environmental determinants of driving stress. The results hold promising applications, including the development of a driving state assessment and warning module as well as the identification of high-risk road sections and implementation of control measures.

Abstract
The incorporation of multiple metal ions in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) through one-pot synthesis can induce unique properties originating from specific atomic-scale spatial apportionment, but the extraction of this crucial information poses challenges. Herein, nondestructive solid-state NMR spectroscopy was used to discern the atomic-scale metal apportionment in a series of bulk Mg1-xCox-MOF-74 samples via identification and quantification of eight distinct arrangements of Mg/Co ions labeled with a 13C-carboxylate, relative to Co content. Due to the structural characteristics of metal-oxygen chains, the number of metal permutations is infinite for Mg1-xCox-MOF-74, making the resolution of atomic-scale metal apportionment particularly challenging. The results were then employed in density functional theory calculations to unravel the molecular mechanism underlying the macroscopic adsorption properties of several industrially significant gases. It is found that the incorporation of weak adsorption sites (Mg2+ for CO and Co2+ for CO2 adsorption) into the MOF structure counterintuitively boosts the gas adsorption energy on strong sites (Co2+ for CO and Mg2+ for CO2 adsorption). Such effect is significant even for Co2+ remote from Mg2+ in the metal-oxygen chain, resulting in a greater enhancement of CO adsorption across a broad composition range, while the enhancement of CO2 adsorption is restricted to Mg2+ with adjacent Co2+. Dynamic breakthrough measurements unambiguously verified the trend in gas adsorption as a function of metal composition. This research thus illuminates the interplay between atomic-scale structures and macroscopic gas adsorption properties in mixed-metal MOFs and derived materials, paving the way for developing superior functional materials.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that can be readily absorbed by plants and enriched in human body. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) yield and grain quality are affected by excessive Cd in the soil. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of Cd absorption, accumulation and detoxification in the root apex is crucial for developing low-Cd rice cultivars. After Cd treatment, Cd concentration in rice root tips (RT) was 1.4 times higher than that in basal roots (BR). To uncover the distinct molecular responses to Cd toxicity, we conducted transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses on the two root sections. The results revealed that the RT exhibited 1.2-2.0 fold higher transcript or protein abundance of several Cd-related transporters than the BR, including Nramp1, Nramp5, IRT1, and HMA3, thereby contributing to more Cd accumulation in the RT. Furthermore, multi-omics analysis unveiled that the RT had enhanced activity in 'phenylpropanoid metabolism', 'AsA-GSH cycle' and 'tryptophan metabolism', conferring the stronger antioxidant system. While the BR showed higher activation in 'cell wall remodeling' and 'terpenoid biosynthesis'. This comprehensive study provides insights into the regulatory network of genes, proteins and metabolites involved in the differential responses to Cd toxicity between rice root tips and mature zones.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current management guidelines for the treatment of carotid stenosis are controversial. We performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the perioperative safety of carotid artery stenting (CAS) and endarterectomy. METHODS We systematically searched EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from inception to November 10, 2022, for randomized controlled trials that compared CAS with carotid endarterectomy (CEA) among patients with carotid stenosis. The analyzed outcomes mainly included stroke, death, myocardial infarction (MI), cranial nerve palsy, the cumulative incidence of mortality, stroke, or MI and the cumulative incidence of death or stroke in the perioperative periods. The risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated and pooled. Subgroup analyses were based on whether patients were symptomatic or asymptomatic. We assessed the certainty of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation framework. RESULTS Seventeen randomized controlled trials with 12,277 participants (6514 and 5763 in the CAS and CEA groups, respectively) were included. Pooled analysis demonstrated that compared with CEA, CAS was associated with decreased risks of perioperative MI (RR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.29∼0.77) and perioperative cranial nerve palsy (RR = 0.02, 95% CI = 0.01∼0.06) but higher risks of perioperative stroke (RR = 1.48, 95% CI = 1.18∼1.87) and cumulative incidence of death or stroke (RR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.20∼1.93). CONCLUSIONS The perioperative safety was equivalent between CAS and CEA. However, CEA may be preferred when considering both procedural safety and long-term efficacy in preventing recurrent stroke.

Abstract
Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease worldwide, but its cause remains unclear. Oestrogen protects against OA, but its clinical use is limited. G protein-coupled receptor 30 (GPR30) is a receptor that binds oestrogen, and GPR30 treatment has benefitted patients with some degenerative diseases. However, its effects on OA prevention and treatment remain unclear. Moreover, several studies have found that activation of estrogen receptors exerting anti-ferroptosis effects, which plays an important role in chondrocyte survival. Therefore, this study explored the general and ferroptosis-related effects and mechanisms of GPR30 in OA. Methods Genome-wide RNA sequencing, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry were used to evaluate GPR30 expression and ferroptosis-related indicators in cartilage tissues from clinical patients. Next, we investigated the effects of G1 (a GPR30 receptor agonist) on the function and pathology of OA in an animal model. We also treated chondrocytes with erastin (ferroptosis agonist) plus G1, G15 (GPR30 receptor antagonist), GPR30 short hairpin RNA, or ferrostatin-1 (ferroptosis inhibitor), then measured cell viability and ferroptosis-related indices and performed proteomics analyses. Finally, western blotting and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were used to assess the effects of G1 on yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) and ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) expression. Results GPR30 expression was lower in the OA cartilage tissues than in the normal tissues, and G1 treatment significantly improved the locomotor ability of mice. Moreover, chondrocyte cell viability significantly decreased after erastin treatment, but G1 treatment concentration-dependently mitigated this effect. Furthermore, G1 treatment decreased phosphorylated YAP1 expression, increased activated YAP1 expression, and increased FTH1 transcription and protein expression, protecting against ferroptosis. Conclusion GPR30 activation inhibited ferroptosis in chondrocytes by suppressing YAP1 phosphorylation, which regulates FTH1 expression. The Translational Potential of this Article: These results provide a novel potential target for therapeutic OA interventions.

Abstract
Leaf functional traits play critical roles in plant functioning. Although the functional traits of overstory trees have been extensively studied, minimal research has been conducted regarding understory species, despite the understory layer is an important component of temperate forests. Such insufficiency limit the broader understanding of processes and functions in forest ecosystems, particularly when under the increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition. Here, we investigated the responses of 18 leaf functional traits in six understory herbaceous species within young and mature stands (three species per stand) in larch (Larix principis-rupprechtii) plantations that subjected to 12 years of anthropogenic N addition. We found that N addition did not significantly impact the photosynthetic traits of understory herbaceous species in either stand; it only led to increased chlorophyll content in Geum aleppicum Jacq. Similarly, with the exception of decreases in the predawn leaf water potential of Sanguisorba officinalis L., N addition did not significantly affect leaf hydraulic traits. With the exception of changes to adaxial epidermis thickness in Potentilla chinensis Ser. (decreased) and G. aleppicum (increased), N addition had negligible effects on leaf anatomical traits and specific leaf area, however, interspecific variations in the plasticity of leaf anatomical traits were observed. Stable responses to N addition were also observed for nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) and their components (soluble sugars and starch), with the exception of Polygonum divaricatum L., which exhibited increases in NSC. Overall, our results suggest that the functional traits of understory herbaceous species exhibit stability under conditions of long-term N enrichment in temperate plantations.

A potential immunotherapy target for breast cancer: parenchymal and immune-stromal expression of the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway. BMC Cancer 2023; 23:1163. Abstract
BACKGROUND The NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain‑containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is a critical component of the innate immune system. It has been known to play an important role in the carcinogenesis and prognosis of breast cancer patients. While the clinical evidence of the relationship between NLRP3 inflammasome activation and long-term survival is still limited, the possible roles of parenchymal or immune-stromal cells of breast cancer tissues in contributing to such carcinogenesis and progression still need to be clarified. This study is an analysis of patients receiving breast cancer surgery in a previous clinical trial. METHODS Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was used to detect the expression levels of NLRP3 inflammasome pathway-related proteins, including NLRP3, caspase-1, apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC), IL-1β, and IL-18, in parenchymal and immune-stromal cells of breast cancer tissues compared to those of adjacent normal tissues, respectively. The relationship between NLRP3 inflammasome expression and clinicopathological characteristics, as well as 5-year survivals were analyzed using the Chi-square test, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, and Cox regression analysis. RESULTS In the parenchymal cells, ASC and IL-18 protein levels were significantly up-regulated in breast cancer tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues (P<0.05). In the immune-stromal cells, all the five NLRP3 inflammasome pathway-related proteins were significantly elevated in breast cancer tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues (P < 0.05). Carcinoma cell embolus was found to significantly correlate with high NLRP3 expression in parenchymal cells of the tumor (x2=4.592, P=0.032), while the expression of caspase-1 was negatively correlated with tumor progression. Histological grades were found to have a positive correlation with IL-18 expression in immune-stromal cells of the tumor (x2=14.808, P=0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that high IL-18 expression in the immune-stromal cells and the positive carcinoma cell embolus were both associated with poor survival (P < 0.05). The multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model implied that the high IL-18 expression and positive carcinoma cell embolus were both independent risk factors for unfavorable prognosis. CONCLUSIONS The activation of NLRP3 inflammasome pathways in immune-stromal and tumor parenchymal cells in the innate immune system was not isotropic and the main functions are somewhat different in breast cancer patients. Caspase-1 in parenchymal cells of the tumor was negatively correlated with tumor progression, and upregulation of IL-18 in immune-stromal cells of breast cancer tissues is a promising prognostic biomarker and a potential immunotherapy target. Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common phenotype in pathology, which accounts for 80% of all oral cancers. The therapeutic methods of oral squamous cell carcinoma include surgical excision, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Whereas, the high recurrence rate and poor prognosis lead to a 5-year survival rate less than 50%. In order to explore more therapeutic strategies of oral squamous cell carcinoma, the relevant risk factors, mechanisms, and diagnostics are widely detected. The various exosome-mediated biological effects on the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma have drawn lots of attention. Exosomes, a kind of extracellular vesicles secreted from host cells and transferred to other cells, show great potential in the regulations of tumorigenesis, progression, and metastasis on oral squamous cell carcinoma. Moreover, some studies reported that the exosomes could interact with tumor microenvironment and be applied to diagnosis or therapy of oral squamous cell carcinoma. In this work, we will summarize the frontier studies of exosomes in the tumor growth, tumor-associated angiogenesis, invasion, and metastasis of oral squamous cell carcinoma, and then probe the current biological functions and applications of exosomes and exosome-derived materials for the therapeutic strategies of oral squamous cell carcinoma, which would help us to update the understanding of exosomes in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract
Ship oil spill accidents have a prolonged duration, complex consequences, challenging cleaning and repairing efforts, and pose a significant threat to the environment, economy, and society. Eliminating irrelevant information and identifying key factors using traditional methods is challenging due to the complexity of the causes of ship oil spill accidents. To address this, this article sorts out the accident databases of the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation (ITOPF) and eight national maritime administration agencies, and innovatively constructs a formal concept analysis (FCA) model based on reports of 100-plus ship oil spill accidents. The model results prove that improper operation, less complete ship equipment, large tonnage, and poor navigation conditions are the key factors. The different causal rules of oil spills in collision/contact, grounding, fire/explosion, and foundering are further compared and analyzed. Finally, corresponding improvement measures are put forward for the key factors of oil spills and different causal rules.

Abstract
The diffuse Galactic γ-ray emission, mainly produced via interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium and/or radiation field, is a very important probe of the distribution, propagation, and interaction of cosmic rays in the Milky Way. In this Letter, we report the measurements of diffuse γ rays from the Galactic plane between 10 TeV and 1 PeV energies, with the square kilometer array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Diffuse emissions from the inner (15°10 TeV). The energy spectrum in the inner Galaxy regions can be described by a power-law function with an index of -2.99±0.04, which is different from the curved spectrum as expected from hadronic interactions between locally measured cosmic rays and the line-of-sight integrated gas content. Furthermore, the measured flux is higher by a factor of ∼3 than the prediction. A similar spectrum with an index of -2.99±0.07 is found in the outer Galaxy region, and the absolute flux for 10≲E≲60 TeV is again higher than the prediction for hadronic cosmic ray interactions. The latitude distributions of the diffuse emission are consistent with the gas distribution, while the longitude distributions show clear deviation from the gas distribution. The LHAASO measurements imply that either additional emission sources exist or cosmic ray intensities have spatial variations.

Abstract
As wastewater-based surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 attracts interest globally, there is a need to evaluate and identify rapid and efficient methods for concentrating enveloped viruses in wastewater. When comparing five precipitation/flocculation-based concentration methods (including aluminum hydroxide adsorption-precipitation, AHAP; zinc acetate precipitation, ZAP; skimmed milk flocculation, SMF; FeCl3 precipitation, FCP; and direct centrifugation, DC), AHAP was found to be the most efficient method in terms of seeded BCoV recovery (50.2 %). Based on the BCoV recovery efficiency and turnaround time, the AHAP and DC methods were selected and tested on five additional wastewater samples containing both seeded BCoV and indigenous wastewater SARS-CoV-2 RNA. The BCoV recovery (DC: average=30.1 %, sx =14.7 %; AHAP: average=33.0 %, sx =14.2 %) and SARS-CoV-2 based on the N2 gene assay (DC: average=3.6 ×103 gene copies or GC/mL, sx =1.9 × 103 GC/mL; AHAP: average=3.0 ×103 GC/mL, sx =2.0 ×103 GC/mL) of both methods were not significantly different in solid fraction (p = 0.89). This study showed significant higher BCoV recovery and SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in wastewater solid fraction (p = 0.006) than liquid fraction. Our result suggests that the solid fraction of wastewater samples is more suitable for recovering enveloped viruses from wastewater, and the DC and AHAP methods equally provide suitably rapid, cost-effective, and significantly higher recovery of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA in wastewater samples.

Abstract
Diabetic encephalopathy is a common consequence of diabetes mellitus that causes cognitive dysfunction and neuropsychiatric disorders. Praeruptorin C (Pra-C) from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn. is a potential antioxidant and neuroprotective agent. This study was conducted to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the effect of Pra-C on diabetic cognitive impairment. A novel object recognition test and the Morris water maze test were performed to assess the behavioral performance of mice. Electrophysiological recordings were made to monitor synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. A protein-protein interaction network of putative Pra-C targets was constructed, and molecular docking simulations were performed to predict the potential mechanisms of the action of Pra-C. Protein expression levels were detected by western blotting. Pra-C administration significantly lowered body weight and fasting blood glucose levels and alleviated learning and memory deficits in type 2 diabetic mice. Network pharmacology and molecular docking results suggested that Pra-C affects the PI3K/AKT/GSK3β signaling pathway. Western blot analysis confirmed significant increases in phosphorylated PI3K, AKT, and GSK3β levels in vivo and in vitro upon Pra-C administration. Pra-C alleviated cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetic mice by activating PI3K/AKT/GSK3β pathway.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation after cerebral ischemia is a key event in progressive brain injury after ischemic stroke. The JAK2/STAT3 pathway is pivotal for neuroinflammation; however, its role in brain senescence after ischemic stroke is unclear. Here, we report that inflammation is increased in the brains of C57BL/6 stroke mice. Treatment of ischemic stroke in adult mice with a JAK kinase inhibitor (AG490) alleviated neurobehavioral defects, reduced brain infarct volume, reduced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and decreased activation of pro-inflammatory microglia. Moreover, AG490 treatment reduced oxidative DNA damage and cellular senescence in the brains of mice following ischemic stroke. Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) and stimulator of interferon genes (STING) were associated with inflammation and senescence. Furthermore, AG490 blocked cGAS/STING/NF-κBp65 expression. Overall, our results indicate that inhibition of JAK2/STAT3 can alleviate the negative neurological consequences of ischemic stroke, likely due to repression of cGAS/STING/NF-κB p65, leading to reduced neuroinflammation and neuronal senescence. Therefore, JAK2/STAT3 may represent a viable therapeutic target for preventing senescence after ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the impact of combining transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with argatroban on balance function and activities of daily living in patients with hemiplegia following cerebral infarction (CI). Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 104 patients with hemiplegia after CI who were admitted to our hospital from July 2020 to July 2021. The patients were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (EG) or the control group (CG), with 52 patients in each group. The EG received TMS in combination with argatroban, while the CG received argatroban alone. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and modified Barthel index (BI) were used to assess the balance function and activities of daily living in both groups after treatment. Results After treatment, the EG demonstrated significantly higher BBS and BI scores compared to the CG (P < .001). Additionally, the EG showed significantly improved upper limb and lower limb Functional Ambulation Profile (FAM) scores compared to the CG (P < .05). Conclusions The combination of TMS and argatroban proves to be an effective approach for enhancing balance function and activities of daily living in hemiplegic patients with CI. Therefore, it is recommended as a valuable rehabilitation treatment for such patients.
