Abstract
Radical-nonradical co-dominant pathways have become a hot topic in advanced oxidation, but achieving this on transition metal sulfides (TMS) remains challenging because their inherently higher electron and spin densities always induce radicals rather than nonradicals. Herein, a biosurfactant layer (BLR) was introduced to redistribute the electron and spin structure of nanoscale iron sulfide (FeS), which allowed both radical and nonradical to co-dominate the catalytic reaction. The resulting BLR-encased FeS hybrid (BLR@FeS) exhibited satisfactory removal efficiency (98.5 %) for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) activation, outperforming both the constituent components [FeS (70.9 %) and BLR (86.2 %)]. Advanced characterizations showed that C, O, N-related sites (-CO and -NC) in BLR attracted electrons in FeS due to their strong electronegativity and electron-withdrawing capacity, which not only decreased electron density in FeS, but also resulted in a shift of the Fe/S sites from the high-spin to the medium-spin state. The reaction routes established by the BLR@FeS/H2O2 system maintained desirable stability against environmental interferences such as common inorganic anions, humic acid and changes in pH. Our study provides a state-of-the-art, molecule-level understanding of tunable co-dominant pathways and expands the targeted applications in the field of advanced oxidation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia (SCZ) shortens life expectancy, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) as the leading cause of death. The links between psychiatric symptoms, cognitive function and CVD are unclear, and sex differences in this relationship are understudied. This study examined the relationship between clinical characteristics and 10-year cardiovascular risk in males and females with SCZ. METHODS This study included 802 patients with chronic SCZ. Fasting venous blood samples were collected from all patients to measure relevant glycolipid metabolic indices. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess psychiatric symptoms. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). The Framingham risk score (FRS) was used to estimate the 10-year CVD risk. RESULTS The mean 10-year cardiovascular risk for all patients was 11.76 ± 8.99%. Among patients with SCZ, 52.8% exhibited an intermediate-high 10-year cardiovascular risk. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that FRS increased with higher body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while it was inversely related to high density lipoprotein levels. The general psychopathological scores were negatively associated with FRS (male: B = - 0.086, P = 0.013; female: B = - 0.056, P = 0.039). Negative symptom (B = - 0.088, P = 0.024) and total PANSS scores (B = - 0.042, P = 0.013) showed a negative association with FRS only in males. Additionally, in patients over 60 years old, general psychopathology (B = - 0.168, P = 0.001) and PANSS total scores (B = - 0.057, P = 0.041) were associated with reduced FRS, while immediate memory (B = 0.073, P = 0.025) was associated with higher FRS. CONCLUSION Patients with SCZ have an elevated risk of developing CVD, with males showing a higher 10-year cardiovascular risk than females. Significant sex differences exist in the relationship between the FRS and psychiatric symptoms, with negative symptoms being negatively related to FRS only in males.

Abstract
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a heterogeneous group of diseases that affect the temporomandibular joint, chewing muscle system, dental occlusion, and even various structures throughout the body, with significant characteristics of biological-psychological-social pattern. TMD related chronic pain, as the most important clinical symptom, can result in negative emotions seriously affecting patients' quality of life and physical and mental health. Although a variety of therapies have been previously reported to treat TMD related chronic pain, there is a lack of widely recognized therapies. Professor Jason W Busse (from Michael G DeGroote National Pain Centre, McMaster University, Hamilton ON, Canada) took the lead and collaborated with multiple internationally renowned schools/hospitals of stomatology to develop an international consensus on the management of chronic pain associated with TMD, a clinical practice guideline, which took two years and was published in December 15th, 2023 in a global top journal of clinical research The British Medical Journal. This clinical practice guideline explored the comparative effectiveness of available therapies for chronic pain associated with TMD, conditionally recommended the specific intervention for different treatment or pain relief, proposed a comprehensive, agreed, and standardized clinical practice guideline. This present article describes the methodology and key elements of the clinical practice guideline to help clinicians fully understand and appropriately apply this guidance, which could provide the references for clinical practice of TMD associated chronic pain in China.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the application possibility of macrocephalic sperm from a patient with 100% macrocephalic sperm and AURKC gene variations. METHODS We diagnosed a case of macrozoospermia with 100% macrocephalic sperm and 39.5% multi-tailed spermatozoa by morphological analysis. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) was used for the patient and his wife. Sanger sequencing technique was used to verify the AURKC mutations in the patient's parents and his offspring. Sperm's ploidy was tested by flow cytometry. The couple asked for intra-couple ART therapy. RESULTS The patient presented novel compound heterozygous AURKC mutations (c.434C > T, c.497A > T) by WES. Sanger sequencing validation showed that variant of c.434C > T was observed in his father and c.497A > T was observed in his mother. Flow cytometry revealed that there existed a certain proportion of haploid sperm. Macrocephalic spermatozoa whose heads were smaller than the diameter of injection needle were selected for microinjection. A singleton pregnancy was achieved after embryo transfer. Prenatal diagnosis revealed that the fetus had normal chromosomal karyotype. Sanger sequencing technique showed that the fetus carried a c.434C > T mutation in one AURKC allele. A 3730 g healthy male fetus was delivered at term. CONCLUSION Our study reported a successful live birth from a patient with definite AURKC gene variants and may provide insights for such patients to choose donor sperm or their own sperm.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the action potential firing patterns of neurons in the visual sensory layers of the superior colliculus in early postnatal mice and the electrophysiological characteristics of neurons with different firing patterns. Methods: This experimental study utilized whole-cell patch-clamp recordings performed on neurons in the visual sensory layers of the superior colliculus using brain slices from 57 healthy male C57BL/6J mice aged 14 to 20 days (weighing 5.0 to 8.9 g) using brain slices. In current-clamp mode, action potential characteristics were analyzed based on the first action potential generated by depolarizing current, and the firing patterns of neurons were recorded using step depolarizing currents. Neuronal firing patterns were analyzed using hierarchical clustering, and the active electrical properties of neurons with different firing patterns were compared. Results: A total of 135 neurons from the visual sensory layers of the superior colliculus were successfully recorded. Cluster analysis of the neuronal firing patterns identified three types of firing patterns: tonic firing (97, 72%), phasic firing (26, 19%), and single firing (12, 9%). The number of action potentials for each firing pattern was 13.30±7.38, 3.73±3.61, and 0.83±0.39, respectively, with significant differences (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in the membrane potential response to step currents among the three firing pattern types (P>0.05). The action potential amplitudes were (60.45±12.22), (53.67±13.20), and (44.04± 12.92) mV, and the afterhyperpolarization amplitudes were (13.45±13.79), (12.02±13.11), and (20.75±2.85) mV, respectively. The maximum rising slopes were (171.29±77.46), (130.14±61.83), and (78.89±37.08) V/s, and the maximum falling slopes were (-76.33±33.61), (-68.17±31.65), and (-47.97±13.92) V/s, respectively, with all differences being statistically significant (all P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the resting membrane potential, action potential threshold, half-width, and afterhyperpolarization duration among the three firing pattern types (all P>0.05). Conclusions: In the early postnatal mice, neurons in the visual sensory layers of the superior colliculus exhibit three distinct firing patterns: tonic, phasic, and single firing. These firing pattern types show significant differences in action potential amplitude, afterhyperpolarization amplitude, maximum rising slopes, and maximum falling slopes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study explores the intricate relationship between clozapine use, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, and cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). METHODS A cohort comprising 765 patients was stratified based on clozapine usage. Data on demographics, clinical characteristics, and glycolipid metabolism were collected. The Framingham Risk Score and vascular age were calculated using gender-specific Cox regression calculators. Cognitive function was assessed with the Repeatable Battery for Assessment of Neuropsychological Status. RESULTS Among the patients, 34.6 % were clozapine users. Clozapine users exhibited lower systolic blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol (all ps < 0.05). Furthermore, clozapine users exhibited higher PANSS scores, along with lower scores in RBANS scores (all ps < 0.05). Correlation analysis revealed positive correlation between CVD risk in non-clozapine users and negative symptom scores (r = 0.074, p = 0.043), and negative correlation with positive symptom scores and RBANS scores (r = -0.121, p = 0.001; r = -0.091, p = 0.028). Multivariate stepwise regression analysis indicated that attention scores as predictive factors for increased CVD risk in clozapine users (B = -0.08, 95 %CI = -0.11 to -0.03, p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Patients with SCZ using clozapine exhibit more severe clinical symptoms and cognitive impairments. Attention emerges as a predictor for increased CVD risk in clozapine users.

Abstract
Objective This study assesses the effectiveness and safety of single-port laparoscopic myomectomy (SPLM) versus conventional laparoscopic myomectomy (CLM). Methods We conducted a retrospective case-control study at a university tertiary hospital, involving 262 patients treated from July 2020 to December 2022. Participants were divided into two groups: 132 underwent SPLM and 130 underwent CLM. Results The two groups were comparable in terms of age, body mass index, parity, delivery history, preoperative anemia, number of myomas, and size of the largest myoma. The SPLM group showed a significant reduction in operation time (average 93 min) and estimated blood loss (average 50 ml) compared to the CLM group (average 118.5 min and 100 ml, respectively). Subgroup analysis based on the size, location, and number of myomas further highlighted the advantages of SPLM, particularly for patients with large (diameter ≥8 cm) or multiple myomas (number ≥4). Patient satisfaction was also notably higher in the SPLM group. Conclusions Single-port laparoscopic myomectomy offers a highly effective, safer, and patient-preferred option for the surgical management of fibroids, especially in cases of large or multiple myomas. These findings suggest that SPLM could become the preferred surgical approach for complex fibroid cases, promising less trauma and quicker recovery for patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate adherence to intravascular catheter (IVC) insertion and maintenance guidelines in Chinese tertiary hospitals. METHODS A cross-sectional questionnaire survey of adult inpatients with IVC placements was conducted from July to September 2022 in 20 tertiary hospitals in China. One clinical staff member from each department in each hospital was assigned to participate in the survey. Questionnaires were uniformly collected and reviewed after three months. RESULTS This study included 1815 cases (62.69%) of central venous catheter, 471 cases (16.27%) of peripherally inserted central catheter, 461 cases (15.92%) of PORT, and 147 cases (5.08%) of haemodialysis catheter insertions. Statistically significant differences in compliance were observed across the four IVC types, specifically in relation to the insertion checklist, standard operating procedure, and insertion environment (P<0.05). Practice adherence during IVC maintenance differed significantly across the four IVC types in aspects such as availability of IVC maintenance verification forms, daily scrubbing of the catheterized patients, and catheter connection methods (P<0.05). A total of 386 (13.34%) patients developed fever, 1086 (37.53%) were treated with therapeutic antibiotics, 16 (0.55%) developed central-line-associated bloodstream infections, two (0.07%) developed local skin infections, and six (0.21%) developed deep vein thrombosis. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to guidelines regarding insertion and maintenance differed across the four IVC types; there is a gap between the recommended measures and the actual operation of the guidelines. Therefore, it is necessary to further enhance training and develop checklists to prevent central-line-associated bloodstream infections.

Abstract
AIM We aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of transvaginal sonography (TVS) versus magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in identifying deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) in the rectovaginal septum (RVS) of affected patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS An extensive search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase databases to identify available publications up to November 2023. Studies evaluating the diagnostic perfor-mance of TVS and MRI for DIE in patients with rectovaginal septum involvement were all included. Sensitivity and specificity analyses employed the DerSi-monian and Laird method, complemented by the Freeman-Tukey double arc-sine trans-formation. Additionally, the study quality was rigorously evaluated using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) method. RESULTS The meta-analysis encompassed 8 articles with a total of 721 patients. It revealed that the overall sensitivity of TVS was 0.51 (95% CI: 0.31-0.72), contrasted with 0.74 (95% CI: 0.66-0.82) for MRI. This finding suggests a higher sensitivity of MRI compared to TVS (P=0.04). Conversely, the overall specificity was 0.97 (95%CI: 0.94-1.00) for TVS and 0.93 (95% CI: 0.84-0.99) for MRI, indicating a comparable level of specificity between the two modalities (P=0.22). CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis reveals that MRI exhibits higher sensitivity and comparable specificity to TVS in patients with DIE of the RVS. However, the limited number of articles included may affect the evidence of these results. Therefore, further d number of articles included may affect the evidence of these results. Abstract
Objective: To investigate the value of implantable cardiac monitor (ICM) in the diagnosis and treatment of patients over 60 years old with unexplained syncope. Methods: This was a multi-center, prospective cohort study. Between June 2018 and April 2021, patients over the age of 60 with unexplained syncope at Beijing Hospital, Fuwai Hospital, Beijing Anzhen Hospital and Puren Hospital were enrolled. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on their decision to receive ICM implantation (implantation group and conventional follow-up group). The endpoint was the recurrence of syncope and cardiogenic syncope as determined by positive cardiac arrhythmia events recorded at the ICM or diagnosed during routine follow-up. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to compare the differences of cumulative diagnostic rate between the 2 groups. A multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed to determine independent predictors of diagnosis of cardiogenic syncope in patients with unexplained syncope. Results: A total of 198 patients with unexplained syncope, aged (72.9±8.25) years, were followed for 558.0 (296.0,877.0) d, including 98 males (49.5%). There were 100 (50.5%) patients in the implantation group and 98 (49.5%) in the conventional follow-up group. Compared with conventional follow-up group, patients in the implantation group were older, more likely to have comorbidities, had a higher proportion of first degree atrioventricular block indicated by baseline electrocardiogram, and had a lower body mass index (all P<0.05). During the follow-up period, positive cardiac arrhythmia events were recorded in 58 (58.0%) patients in the ICM group. The diagnosis rate (42.0% (42/100) vs. 4.1% (4/98), P<0.001) and the intervention rate (37.0% (37/100) vs. 2.0% (2/98), P<0.001) of cardiogenic syncope in the implantation group were higher than those in the conventional follow-up group (all P<0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the cumulative diagnostic rate of cardiogenic syncope was significantly higher in the implantation group than in the traditional follow-up group (HR=11.66, 95%CI 6.49-20.98, log-rank P<0.001). Multivariate analysis indicated that ICM implantation, previous atrial fibrillation, diabetes mellitus or first degree atrioventricular block in baseline electrocardiogram were independent predictors for cardiogenic syncope (all P<0.05). Conclusions: ICM implantation improves the diagnosis and intervention rates in patients with unexplained syncope, and increases diagnostic efficiency in patients with unexplained syncope.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate how sleeve gastrectomy (SG), a typical operation of bariatric surgery, attenuated symptom, and progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). METHODS DKD model was induced by high-fat diet (HFD) combined with streptozocin in Wistar rats. SG was performed, and the group subjected to sham surgery served as control. The animals were euthanized 12 weeks after surgery, followed by sample collection for the subsequent experiment. The HK-2, a renal proximal tubular epithelial cell line derived from human, was utilized to investigate the potential mechanisms. RESULTS SG improved metabolic parameters and glucose homeostasis, and could alleviate DKD in terms of renal function indices as well as histological and morphological structures in DM rats, accompanied with a significant reduction in renal tubular injury. Compared with sham group, SG reduced the renal tubular ferroptosis. To further clarify the mechanism involved, in vitro experiments were performed. In the presence of high glucose, renal tubular TGF-β1 secretion was significantly increased in HK-2 cell line, which led to activation of ferroptosis through TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway. Inhibition of TGF-β1 receptor and phosphorylation of Smad3 significantly ameliorated TGF-β1-mediated ferroptosis. In vivo experiments also found that SG improved the hyperglycemic environment, reduced renal TGF-β1 concentrations, and down-regulated the TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway. CONCLUSIONS With the capacity to lower the glucose, SG could attenuate the ferroptosis by inhibiting TGF-β1/Smad3 signaling pathway in DKD rats, and eventually attenuated DKD.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to compare the audiological characteristics between children with unilateral auditory neuropathy (UAN) and single-sided deafness (SSD) to establish a valid basis for the differential diagnosis of children with UAN. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on audiological and imaging evaluations of children with UAN and SSD who were treated at Beijing Children's Hospital of Capital Medical University between May 2015 and June 2023. There were 17 children with UAN, comprising 10 males and 7 females, with an average age of 4.7 years. Additionally, there were 43 children with SSD, consisting of 27 males and 16 females, with an average age of 6.5 years. Audiological assessments included Auditory brainstem response (ABR), Steady-state auditory evoked potential (ASSR), Behavioural audiometry, Cochlear microphonic potential (CM), Distortino-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE), and acoustic immittance test. The results of the audiological assessment and imaging phenotypic between the two groups of children were compared and analyzed by applying SPSS 27.0 statistical software. Results: (1) The UAN group (77.8%) had a significantly higher rate of ABR wave IIIL than the SSD group (20.9%) (P<0.01). The PA thresholds at 500 Hz and 1 000 Hz of children with SSD were higher than those of children with UAN, while the ASSR thresholds at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2 000 Hz, and 4 000 Hz of children with SSD were significantly higher than those of children with UAN (P<0.05). (2) The degree of hearing loss in both UAN and SSD children was predominantly complete hearing loss. The percentage of complete hearing loss was significantly higher (χ²=4.353, P=0.037) in the SSD group (93.0%, 40/43) than in the UAN group (63.6%, 7/11). However, the percentage of profound hearing loss was significantly higher in the UAN group (27.3%, 3/11) than in the SSD group (2.3%, 1/43) (Fisher's exact test, P=0.023). In terms of hearing curve configuration, the percentage of flat type was significantly higher in the SSD group (76.7%, 33/43) than in the UAN group (36.4%, 4/11). The proportion of the UAN group (27.3%, 3/11) was significantly higher than that in the SSD group (2.3%, 1/43) in ascending type (P<0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the hearing curves of the declining type and other types between the two groups (P>0.05). (3) The proportion of imaging assessment without abnormality was significantly more common in the UAN group (81.8%) than in the SSD group (37.1%) (χ²=6.695, P=0.015). Conclusions: Compared to children with SSD, the occurrence of wave IIIL on the ABR test was significantly more common in children with UAN. The percentage of ascending hearing curves was significantly higher in children with UAN than in children with SSD. ASSR thresholds were significantly lower in children with UAN. The normal imaging phenotype was significantly more common in children with UAN than in children with SSD.

Abstract
Netrin-1 (NTN-1) plays a vital role in the progress of nervous system development and inflammatory diseases. However, the role and underlying mechanism of NTN-1 in inflammatory pain (IP) are unclear. BV2 microglia were treated with LPS to mimic the cell status under IP. Adeno-associated virus carrying the NTN-1 gene (AAV-NTN-1) was used to overexpress NTN-1. Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA)-induced mouse was recruited as an in vivo model. MTT and commercial kits were utilized to evaluate cell viability and cell death of BV2 cells. The mRNA expressions and secretions of cytokines were measured using the ELISA method. Also, the pyroptosis and activation of BV2 cells were investigated based on western blotting. To verify the role of Rac1/NF-kappaB signaling, isochamaejasmin (ISO) and AAV-Rac1 were presented. The results showed that NTN-1 expression was decreased in LPS-treated BV2 microglia and spinal cord tissues of CFA-injected mice. Overexpressing NTN-1 dramatically reversed cell viability and decreased cell death rate of BV2 microglia under lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation, while the level of pyroptosis was inhibited. Besides, AAV-NTN-1 rescued the activation of microglia and inflammatory injury induced by LPS, decreasing IBA-1 expression, as well as iNOS, IL-1beta and IL-6 secretions. Meanwhile AAV-NTN-1 promoted the anti-inflammation response, including increases in Arg-1, IL-4 and IL-10 levels. In addition, the LPS-induced activation of Rac1/NF-kappaB signaling was depressed by NTN-1 overexpression. The same results were verified in a CFA-induced mouse model. In conclusion, NTN-1 alleviated IP by suppressing pyroptosis and promoting M2 type activation of microglia via inhibiting Rac1/NF-?B signaling, suggesting the protective role of NTN-1 in IP. Abstract
Purpose Variants in the ARR3 gene have been linked to early-onset high myopia (eoHM) with a unique X-linked female-limited inheritance. However, the clinical validity of this gene-disease association has not been systematically evaluated. Methods We identified two Chinese families with novel ARR3 splicing variants associated with eoHM. Minigene constructs were generated to assess the effects of the variants on splicing. We integrated previous evidence to curate the clinical validity of ARR3 and eoHM using the ClinGen framework. Results The variants c.39+1G>A and c.100+4A>G were identified in the two families. Minigene analysis showed both variants resulted in abnormal splicing and introduction of premature termination codons. Based on genetic and experimental evidence, the ARR3-eoHM relationship was classified as "definitive." Conclusions Our study identified two novel splicing variants of the ARR3 gene linked to eoHM and confirmed their functional validity via minigene assay. This research expanded the mutational spectrum of ARR3 and confirmed the minigene assay technique as an effective tool for understanding variant effects on splicing mechanisms.

Abstract
Defective decidualization of endometrial stromal cells (ESCs) in endometriosis (EM) patients leads to inadequate endometrial receptivity and EM-associated infertility. Hypoxia is an inevitable pathological process of EM and participates in deficient decidualization of the eutopic secretory endometrium. Enhancer of zeste homology 2 (EZH2) is a methyltransferase which catalyses H3K27Me3, leading to decreased expression levels of target genes. Although EZH2 expression is low under normal decidualization, it is abundantly increased in the eutopic secretory endometrium of EM and is induced by hypoxia. Chromatin immunoprecipitation-PCR results revealed that decidua marker IGFBP1 is a direct target of EZH2, partially explaining the increased levels of histone methylation modification in defected decidualization of EM. To mechanism controlling this, we examined the effects of hypoxia on EZH2 and decidualization. EZH2 mRNA showed decreased m6 A modification and increased expression levels under hypoxia and decidualization combined treatment. Increased EZH2 expression was due to the increased expression of m6 A demethylase ALKBH5 and decreased expression of the m6 A reader protein YTHDF2. YTHDF2 directly bind to the m6 A modification site of EZH2 to promote EZH2 mRNA degradation in ESCs. Moreover, selective Ezh2 depletion in mouse ESCs increased endometrial receptivity and improved mouse fertility by up-regulating decidua marker IGFBP1 expression. This is the first report showing that YTHDF2 can act as a m6 A reader to promote decidualization by decreasing the stability of EZH2 mRNA and further increasing the expression of IGFBP1 in ESCs. Taken together, our findings highlight the critical role of EZH2/H3K27Me3 in decidualization and reveal a novel epigenetic mechanism by which hypoxia can suppress EM decidualization by decreasing the m6 A modification of EZH2 mRNA.

Abstract
Behavioural flexibility is key to survival in a dynamic environmentWhile flexible, goal-directed behaviours are initially dependent on dorsomedial striatum, they become dependent on lateral striatum as behaviours become inflexible. Similarly, lesions of dopamine terminals in lateral striatum disrupt the development of inflexible habits. This work suggests that dopamine release in lateral striatum may drive inflexible behaviours, though few studies have investigated a causative role of subpopulations of striatal dopamine terminals in reversal learning, a measure of flexibility. Here, we performed two optogenetic experiments to activate dopamine terminals in dorsomedial (DMS), dorsolateral (DLS) or ventral (nucleus accumbens [NAc]) striatum in DAT-Cre mice that expressed channelrhodopsin-2 via viral injection (Experiment I) or through transgenic breeding with an Ai32 reporter line (Experiment II) to determine how specific dopamine subpopulations impact reversal learning. Mice performed a reversal task in which they self-stimulated DMS, DLS, or NAc dopamine terminals by pressing one of two levers before action-outcome lever contingencies were reversed. Largely consistent with presumed ventromedial/lateral striatal function, we found that mice self-stimulating medial dopamine terminals reversed lever preference following contingency reversal, while mice self-stimulating NAc showed parial flexibility, and DLS self-stimulation resulted in impaired reversal. Impairments in DLS mice were characterized by more regressive errors and reliance on lose-stay strategies following reversal, as well as reduced within-session learning, suggesting reward insensitivity and overreliance on previously learned actions. This study supports a model of striatal function in which DMS and ventral dopamine facilitate goal-directed responding, and DLS dopamine supports more inflexible responding.

Abstract
Slow electron migration in iron sulfide nanoparticles (C-FeS NPs) synthesized by co-precipitation severely limits the activation performance of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Herein, a biofunctional FeS NPs (P-FeS NPs) derived from Pinus massoniana Lamb biomass, with interface coupling effect, was used for enhanced H2O2 activation and norfloxacin (NOR) degradation. It was discovered that P-FeS NPs exhibited superior catalytic activity (100%) compared to C-FeS NPs (53.1%). Fe atoms of FeS NPs and hydroxyl groups (-OH) of Pinus massoniana Lamb biomass were mutually coupled to produce Fe-OH interfacial sites, which significantly increased the generation of multi-reactive species by accelerating the transfer of electrons across interfaces. Additionally, radical quenching tests elucidated that singlet oxygen (1O2) (66.6%) played a leading role, while hydroxyl radicals (•OH) (14.5%) and superoxide radicals (•O2-) (18.9%) were secondary oxidants. Finally, P-FeS NPs showed a high tolerance to a wide range of pH conditions and could remove 96.4% NOR from wastewater. Overall, this work generates important insights into understanding how green sustainable interfacial catalysts can accelerate catalytic activity.

Abstract
In order to improve the utilization rate of coal gangue and expand the application range of coal gangue concrete (CGC), a certain proportion of steel fiber was added to the concrete, and the freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) and flexural tests were used to explore the effects of different mass replacement rates of coal gangue (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) and different proportions of the volumetric blending of the steel fiber (0%, 0.8%, 1.0%, and 1.2%) on the frost resistance of steel fiber-reinforced CGC (SCGC). The governing laws of mass loss rate, relative dynamic elastic modulus and load-midspan deflection curve were obtained on the base of the analysis of testing results. The damage mechanisms of the SCGC under the FTCs were analyzed using the results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the Lemaitre's strain equivalence principle and Krajcinovic's vector damage theory, a damage evolution model of the SCGC under the FTCs was established by introducing the damage variable of the SCGC satisfying Weibull distribution. The results show an increasing mass loss rate of the SCGC and a decreasing relative dynamic elastic modulus with an increasing mass replacement rate of coal gangue. The proper content of the steel fiber can reduce the mass loss rate of concrete by 10~40% and the relative loss rate of dynamic elastic modulus of concrete by 2~8%, thus significantly improving the ductility and toughness of the concrete. The established damage evolution model is well validated by the experimental results, which further help to improve the modelling accuracy. This study provides key experimental data and a theoretical basis for a wider range of proper utilization of coal gangue in cold regions.

Abstract
Although carbon-nano zero-valent iron (C@nZVI) composites with unique properties have been used for environmental remediation, the origins of their superior properties and multifunctionalities of C@nZVI still need to be verified. Here, iron precursor nanoparticles (PML-Fe NPs) synthesized by Pinus massoniana Lamb and carbonized C@nZVI were systemically compared to reveal the origins of the structure and performance of C@nZVI composites. Characterizations showed that structure-modulated C@nZVI has favorable properties of good crystallinity, graphite carbon-rich structure but also defects when compared to PML-Fe NPs. The resultant carbon layer fundamentally improved its dispersion and anti-oxidation properties. Further experiments demonstrated that the evolution of material crystallinity, graphitization and defects affected the reaction pathway of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), and 17β-estradiol (βE2). The multifunctionalities covered adsorption, reduction and catalytic oxidation. This study explains the origins of multifunctional C@nZVI by understanding the structure-property correlation in the carbonization process.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Rectal cancer patients reaching complete clinical response (cCR) after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy can be offered a nonoperative watch-and-wait (W&W) strategy. As evidence of good oncological outcomes accumulates, the functional outcomes remain less explored. The aim of this study is to comprehensively assess the long-term rectal toxicity and anorectal function in patients managed by a W&W strategy and to investigate the clinical risk factors for anorectal dysfunction. MATERIALS/METHODS Seventy W&W patients who were disease-free at the moment of recruitment were included. A minimum 2-year follow-up was considered. We graded late rectal toxicity according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group/European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (RTOG/EORTC) scale and the Late Effects of Normal Tissue/Subjective Objective Management Analytic (LENT/SOMA) system. Long-term anorectal function was assessed with the Wexner score, the Low Anterior Resection Syndrome score (LARS score), and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Bowel Function Instrument (MSK BFI). RESULTS All patients received standard chemoradiotherapy consisting of a total dose of 5000 cGy in 25 fractions. The median tumor distance from the anal verge was 3 (IQR 2-4) cm. After a median follow-up of 43 (IQR 28-66) months, less than half of patients developed Grade 1 (40.0%) or Grade 2 (1.4%) late rectal toxicity, and no patients complained of higher grades. LENT/SOMA criteria also identified more patients with mild symptoms. The most frequent symptoms were sphincter control problems, mainly manifested as fecal urgency, reported by 60.0% of patients. For long-term anorectal function, the median LARS score was 16 (IQR 4-25). 17.1% of patients reported minor LARS and 15.7% reported major LARS. The median Wexner score was 2 (IQR 0-3). The median MSK BFI total score was 82 (IQR 77-86). Smoking history was an independent risk factor for anorectal dysfunction in multivariate analyses (OR = 6.491, 95% CI 1.536-27.432). CONCLUSION Rectal cancer patients managed by a watch-and-wait strategy after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy have retained satisfactory anorectal function. However, fecal urgency might be a common problem. Smoking history was an independent risk factor for long-term anorectal dysfunction. Prospective studies with emphasis on bowel function outcomes containing a larger number of patients are needed.

Abstract
Severe endometrium damage causes pathological conditions such as thin endometrium and intrauterine adhesion, resulting in uterine factor infertility. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy is a promising strategy in endometrial repair; yet, exogenous MSCs still raise concerns for safety and ethical issues. Human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) residing in adipose tissue have high translational potentials due to their autologous origin. To harness the high translation potentials of ADMSC in clinical endometrium regeneration, here we constructed an ADMSCs composited porous scaffold (CS/ADMSC) and evaluated its effectiveness on endometrial regeneration in a rat endometrium-injury model. We found that CS/ADMSC intrauterine implantation (i) promoted endometrial thickness and gland number, (ii) enhanced tissue angiogenesis, (iii) reduced fibrosis and (iv) restored fertility. We ascertained the pro-proliferation, pro-angiogenesis, immunomodulating and anti-fibrotic effects of CS/ADMSC in vitro and revealed that the CS/ADMSC influenced extracellular matrix composition and organization by a transcriptomic analysis. Our results demonstrated the effectiveness of CS/ADMSC for endometrial regeneration and provided solid proof for our future clinical study.

To evaluate the association between the number of oocytes retrieved and cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) in different female age strata. 17,931 women undergoing their first IVF/ICSI-ET cycle in the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital of Zhejiang University were grouped by age (A: ≤ 35 years; B: ≥ 36 years) as well as the number of oocytes retrieved (a: ≤ 5; b:6-9; c:10-14; d: ≥ 15). Multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess the OR of CLBR for the variable 'age' and 'number of oocytes retrieved'. The group ≥ 36 years exhibited lower cumulative pregnancy rates (CPRs) and cumulative live birth rates (CLBRs), which are proportional to the number of oocytes retrieved but opposite to increasing age. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the age and number of oocytes retrieved remain significant independent predictive factors (P < 0.001). Age and number of oocytes retrieved are two independent factors affecting the CLBR. The discrepancy of the minimum number of oocytes retrieved for patients with different ages to achieve ideal CLBR is instructive for clinical practice. The practice of controlling the stimulation dose is feasible for patients ≤ 35 years who can achieve over 60% CLBR once the number of oocytes obtained is more than 6. However, additional stimulation cycles and accumulation of embryos are necessary for elderly group especially those ≥ 38 years old who need more than 14 oocytes to obtain higher live birth rate.

Abstract
Objective: This study was to investigate the main characteristics and related factors of wideband absorbance (WBA) in children with normal hearing and to obtain age-specific reference range of WBA. Methods: 384 children between 0-12 years old (615 ears) who visited the Beijing Children's Hospital, Capital Medical University from October 2019 to February 2021 were enrolled, including 230 males (376 ears) and 154 females (239 ears), with totally 306 left ears and 309 right ears. Wideband tympanometry (WBT) was performed and normative WBA data were analyzed by SPSS 24.0 statistical software. Repeated measures and multivariate analysis of variance were applied to the data from 16 points at 1/3-octave frequencies (226, 324, 408, 500, 667, 841, 1 000, 1 297, 1 682, 2 000, 2 670, 3 364, 4 000, 5 339, 6 727 and 8 000 Hz) to evaluate the effects of frequency, age, external auditory canal pressures, gender and ear on WBA. Results: According to the WBT frequency-absorbance curve, the subjects were divided into seven groups: 1-month old group, 2-month old group, 3-month old group, 4-5 month old group, 6-24 month old group,>2-6 year old group and>6-12 year old group. The WBA of normal-hearing children underwent a series of developmental changes with age at both ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressures. WBA results for 1-month group and 2-month old group exhibited a multipeaked pattern, with the peaks occurring around 2 000 and 4 897 Hz, and a notch around 3 886 Hz. WBA results for 3-month group and 4-5 month old group exhibited a single broad-peaked pattern, with the peak occurring between 2 000-4 757 Hz. The WBA of 1-month old group to 4-5 month old group decreased gradually at low frequency (226-408 Hz) and 6 727 Hz, and increased at middle to high frequency (2 670-4 000 Hz). The WBA of 6-24 month old group were significantly lower than that of 2-month old group to 4-5 month old group at all frequencies except 3 364 and 4 000 Hz. WBA results for 6-24 month old group,>2-6 year old group and>6-12 year old group exhibited a single-peaked pattern, and the peak frequency of WBA moved to the lower frequency successively. From 6-24 month old group to>6-12 year old group, the WBA gradually increased at low to middle frequencies (667-2 670 Hz) and 8 000 Hz, and decreased at middle to high frequencies (3 364-5 339 Hz). Among the 16 frequencies of all age groups, the difference between WBA under ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressure were -0.09-0.06, and 43.75%-81.25% frequency points had statistically significant difference, which was mainly manifested in that WBA under ambient pressure were lower than that under tympanometric peak pressure at 226-1 682 Hz. There was no significant ear effect on all of the age groups. Similarly, there was no significant gender effect except for 3-month old group and 4-5 month old group. Conclusions: The WBA of normal-hearing children measured at ambient pressure and tympanometric peak pressure varied across the frequencies with age from 1 month to 12 years old, and different frequencies followed different change patterns (increase vs. decrease) in WBA. There was also significant external auditory canal pressures effect on all of the age groups. The establishment of age-specific reference range of WBA for 0-12 years old normal-hearing children in this study would be useful for clinical practice of determining normative data regarding WBT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the changes in gray matter volume in depressive-like mice and explore the possible mechanism. METHODS Twenty-four 6-week-old C57 mice were randomized equally into control group and model group, and the mice in the model group were subjected to chronic unpredictable mild stimulation (CUMS) for 35 days. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to examine structural changes of the grey matter volume in depressive-like mice. The expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the grey matter of the mice was detected using Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. RESULTS Compared with the control mice, the mice with CUMS showed significantly decreased central walking distance in the open field test (P < 0.05) and increased immobile time in forced swimming test (P < 0.05). Magnetic resonance imaging showed that the volume of the frontal cortex was significantly decreased in CUMS mice (P < 0.001, when the mass level was greater than or equal to 10 756, the FDRc was corrected with P=0.05). Western blotting showed that the expression of mature BDNF in the frontal cortex was significantly decreased in CUMS mice (P < 0.05), and its expression began to decrease after the exposure to CUMS as shown by immunofluorescence staining. The volume of different clusters obtained by voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis was correlated with the expression level of mature BDNF detected by Western blotting (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The decrease of frontal cortex volume after CUMS is related with the reduction of mature BDNF expression in the frontal cortex.
