Abstract
The immune cytokine interleukin-1 (IL-1) causes a pronounced elevation in substance P (SP) immunoreactivity and the mRNA coding for its preprotachykinin precursor in cultured superior cervical (sympathetic) ganglia (SCG; Jonakait and Schotland, 1990; Freidin and Kessler, 1991; Hart et al., 1991). In this study we have investigated the possibility that the SCG can respond to other immune stimulators, notably lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a product of bacterial cell walls. LPS treatment of cultured SCG resulted in a dose-dependent increase in SP. However, LPS did not induce SP in the absence of non-neuronal cells, suggesting the necessity of a non-neuronal cell-derived intermediate. Since the LPS induction of SP was partially blocked by a specific IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) and since LPS induced approximately an 8-fold increase in mRNA coding for IL-1 itself, we concluded that IL-1 is at least one of these LPS-induced intermediates. TNF-alpha, which also raises SP levels, may be another. IL-6, which may also be increased by LPS, does not increase levels of SP. The synthetic glucocorticoid hormone dexamethasone (DEX) blocks the LPS induction of SP with a Ki approximating 8 x 10(-11) M. The inhibition is due in part to the blockade of the LPS induction of ganglionic IL-1 mRNA. Moreover, inhibition of the LPS induction of SP by indomethacin implies mediation of the effect through prostaglandins. The inhibition by indomethacin suggests a non-monocytic cell source since prostaglandins are thought to restrict the LPS induction of monocytic IL-1.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic interventions capable of preventing ventricular dysfunction "stunning" or accelerating its functional recovery have potential clinical importance. Myocardial protection of the stunned myocardium has not been documented when drugs were administered only during postischemic reperfusion. The role of ATP depletion and release of purines in myocardial injury was assessed using the selective nucleoside transport blocker p-nitrobenzylthioinosine (NBMPR) in a combination with specific adenosine deaminase inhibitor erythro-9-[hydroxy-3-nonyl]adenine (EHNA) administered during reperfusion after reversible ischemic injury. METHODS AND RESULTS Sixteen anesthetized dogs were instrumented with minor axis sonocrystals and intraventricular Millar. Ventricular performance was determined, off bypass, from the slope of the relationship between stroke-work and end-diastolic length as a sensitive and load-independent index of contractility within physiological range. Hearts were subjected to 20 minutes' warm global ischemia and reperfused with warm blood treated with either saline (control group, n = 8) or saline containing 100 mumol/L EHNA and 25 mumol/L NBMPR (EHNA/NBMPR-treated group, n = 8). Myocardial biopsies were collected and analyzed for ATP and metabolites using high-performance liquid chromatography. Warm ischemia induced significant depletion of ATP (P < .05 versus preischemia) and accumulation of inosine at the end of ischemia (> 90% of total nucleosides) in both groups. Complete functional recovery was observed in the EHNA/NBMPR-treated group (P < .05 versus control group). CONCLUSIONS Selective entrapment of adenine nucleosides during postischemic reperfusion attenuated ventricular dysfunction (stunning) after brief global ischemia. It is concluded that nucleoside transport plays an important role in myocardial stunning, and its blockade augmented myocardial protection against reperfusion injury. Selective entrapment of endogenous inosine, generated during ischemia, represents an attractive therapeutic approach to the alleviation of postischemic dysfunction mediated by reperfusion in a wide spectrum of ischemic syndromes, including percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Abstract
The progression to AIDS may be significantly related to the level of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication. We have used quantitative cell culture and quantitative DNA and RNA PCR to measure viral load and expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained cross-sectionally and longitudinally from HIV-1-seropositive homosexual men enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. Our results indicate that the number of circulating CD4+ T-lymphocytes producing HIV-1 increased as the total number of CD4+ T-cells declined. However, there was no correlation between the number of HIV-1-producing CD4+ cells and the duration of infection. Furthermore, the level of HIV-1 gag RNA increased as the disease progressed and CD4+ cell numbers declined. Subjects who remained asymptomatic with stable CD4+ cell counts, however, maintained a very low level of HIV-1 RNA expression during the entire period of follow-up (38-71 months). In contrast to viral RNA expression, the level of proviral DNA did not change significantly as the disease progressed. However, the level of proviral DNA was significantly higher in AIDS patients than in men who remained asymptomatic. Such increased levels of HIV-1 DNA were detected 34-68 months before the development of AIDS. These results support the role of HIV-1 RNA expression in the development of AIDS.

Abstract
Cardiopulmonary bypass causes a "euthyroid-sick" state characterized by low levels of circulating triiodothyronine. Triiodothyronine supplementation in this setting has been postulated to improve postischemic left ventricular function by increasing the availability of myocardial high-energy phosphates. These postulates have not been substantiated, however, using load-independent parameters of left ventricular function and analysis of high-energy phosphate metabolism. To test these hypotheses, 14 healthy pigs (30 to 40 kg) were placed on cardiopulmonary bypass and instrumented with left ventricular minor-axis ultrasonic crystals and micromanometer-tipped pressure catheters. Hearts were subjected to 30 minutes of global, normothermic ischemia. Triiodothyronine (0.1 mg/kg; n = 7) or placebo (n = 7) was administered in a random, investigator-blinded fashion at the removal of the aortic cross-clamp and after 60 minutes of reperfusion. Hemodynamic, metabolic, and ultrastructural data were obtained before ischemia and after 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes of reperfusion. By 90 minutes of reperfusion left ventricular contractility had returned to preischemic levels in hearts supplemented with triiodothyronine, despite postischemic myocardial adenosine triphosphate levels of 50% to 60% of baseline in both groups. Ultrastructurally, the sarcoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria were significantly better preserved in the group treated with triiodothyronine. This study suggests that triiodothyronine supplementation significantly enhances postischemic left ventricular functional recovery and that this recovery is due to mechanisms other than enhanced availability of myocardial high-energy phosphates.

Abstract
Neuronal and glial cell marker proteins were quantified in order to evaluate the possibility of increased proteolysis in the brain of rabbits with acute liver failure and acute hyperammonemia. Acute liver failure was induced by a two-stage devascularization procedure. Acute hyperammonemia was induced by a prolonged infusion of ammonium acetate, which simulates the plasma ammonia level in acute liver failure. Control animals received an infusion of sodium/potassium acetate. After development of severe encephalopathy, the animals were sacrificed (13.7 +/- 1.3 hours for rabbits with acute liver failure and 20.2 +/- 0.8 hours for rabbits with hyperammonemia) (x +/- S.E.M./n = 6) and their brains were dissected into cerebral cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum and brain stem. The total protein content and the concentrations of the neuronal cell marker proteins NSE (neuron specific enolase), NF68 and NF200 (68 kD and 200 kD neurofilament polypeptides) and the glial cell marker proteins GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein) and S-100 were determined. Total protein content was decreased in the brain stem in acute hyperammonemia only. The content of neuronal and glial cell markers was not affected in either of the two conditions. However, low molecular weight proteolytic fragments of the NF 68 kD polypeptide were observed in the hippocampus of three out of six animals in both experimental groups. No proteolytic degradation of GFAP was observed. The results show that, in experimental encephalopathy due to acute liver failure and acute hyperammonemia, no major changes occur in the marker proteins. The finding of proteolytic fragments of the NF68 polypeptide indicates that the neuronal population is affected prior to glial alterations. These findings are in agreement with the concept that acute hepatic encephalopathy is reversible and induces only slight structural changes.

Abstract
The leuB gene of Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona strain kenniwicki has been cloned on a 9.5 kb plasmid, pWVL1, by complementation of Escherichia coli leuB mutants. Subcloning and Tn5 mutagenesis showed that the region required for complementation was approximately 1.2 kb in length. Enzyme assays showed that the product of the cloned gene was a beta-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase. Defects in the leuA, leuC and leuD genes of E. coli were not complemented by pWVL1. The nucleotide sequence of the leuB-complementing region and surrounding DNA has been determined. Three open reading frames were found which encode proteins of 40.9, 38.8 and 15 kDa. Analysis of subclones containing nucleotide deletions of varying sizes showed that only the 38.8 kDa protein was necessary to obtain complementation of E. coli leuB mutations. The PIR data base was searched and the enzyme 3-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase from six different micro-organisms was found to share significant amino acid sequence similarity (43-57%) with the 38.8 kDa L. interrogans leuB gene product. The organization of the leucine biosynthetic genes in L. interrogans differs from that found in E. coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Bacillus subtilis.

Abstract
Mechanisms of myocardial stunning include myocardial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) depletion, catecholamine release, and oxygen free radical formation. Although the latter is the most widely supported mechanism, levels of 5'-nucleotidase (directs AMP dephosphorylation) are inversely related to functional recovery following ischemia and may also have a role in ischemic injury. Previous studies reveal that 5'-nucleotidase levels increase with age and also vary with species. An inhibitor of this enzyme (alpha, beta methylene adenosine 5'-diphosphate) was effective in maintaining AMP levels in vitro but was ineffective in dogs due to limited permeability. Observed species-specific differences in recovery from myocardial stunning may be related to differences in AMP accumulation and subsequent metabolism. Species showing improved recovery from stunning may accumulate AMP as a result of feedback inhibition of 5'-nucleotidase. Using a model of extreme experimentally-induced ischemia, we found that adenosine treatment allowed full recovery of ventricular function within 30 minutes, probably by entrapping ATP catabolites. Similarly, enhancement of adenosine production by N-diarylalkylpeprazine derivatives has also been shown to be cardioprotective in the setting of global normothermic ischemia. Novel strategies for pharmacological intervention in the ATP catabolic pathway should use animal models involving species that are tolerant to myocardial stunning.

Abstract
Administration of thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine (T3), causes numerous cardiovascular effects such as increases in stroke volume, cardiac output, heart rate, and myocardial contractility, and decreases in systemic vascular resistance. Along with other stressors, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has been associated with reduced levels of T3. We examined the effects of T3 on early postischemic myocardial recovery in rabbit hearts subjected to crystalloid perfusion to simulate a low T3 state, and in pig hearts following global ischemia due to CPB. Studies using the former system showed that T3 administration results in significantly improved developed pressure after reperfusion of mildly ischemic hearts compared to controls, without producing inotropic effects. In more severely stunned rabbit hearts, physiologic and 10 times physiologic doses of T3 produced significantly improved (p < 0.05) stroke work end-diastolic length compared to placebo treatment. T3 treated pigs undergoing CPB and subjected to 30 minutes of global normothermic ischemia experienced significantly enhanced recovery of left ventricular contractility compared to controls at 90 and 120 minutes post reperfusion. Neither placebo nor T3 affected myocardial adenosine triphosphate levels. These data show that T3 enhances recovery from myocardial stunning without producing acute inotropic effects.

Abstract
Covalent linkage of polyethylene glycol to superoxide dismutase prolongs the serum half-life of the enzyme and may facilitate intracellular access. We tested the myocardial protective effect of polyethylene glycol superoxide dismutase administered once, 24 hours before ischemia. Because hearts were studied ex vivo in a crystalloid perfused system, cardioprotection could be ascribed to intramyocardial or membrane-bound polyethylene glycol superoxide dismutase accumulation. Thirty isolated rabbit hearts from the four following groups were studied: (1) control: untreated rabbits (n = 7); (2) PEG-control: 24-hour intravenous preinfusion of methoxypolyethylene glycol 5000 (5 mg/kg) to examine the effect of polyethylene glycol alone, without conjugation to superoxide dismutase (n = 8); (3) PEG-SOD 10,000: 24-hour preinfusion of polyethylene glycol superoxide dismutase (10,000 U/kg) (n = 8); (4) PEG-SOD 30,000: 24-hour preinfusion of polyethylene glycol superoxide dismutase (30,000 U/kg) (n = 7). After measurement of baseline function with use of an intraventricular balloon, hearts were subjected to normothermic ischemia until a 4 mm Hg rise in intracavitary pressure was observed. Function was assessed at 15-minute intervals throughout reperfusion and expressed as percent return of developed pressure. After 60 minutes of reperfusion, recovery of function was greater for the PEG-SOD 30,000 group (85.6% +/- 2.6%) when compared with either the untreated or PEG-control group (68.9% +/- 2.3% and 71.4% +/- 2.0%, respectively). A similar difference was seen throughout reperfusion. Although an improved return of function was shown in the lower dose PEG-SOD 10,000 group, the margin of difference when compared with any of the control groups was determined to be insignificant at all times of reperfusion and at 60 minutes (75.9% +/- 3.2%). These data demonstrate that high, but not low, doses of polyethylene glycol superoxide dismutase significantly reduce reperfusion injury when administered 24 hours before initiation of global ischemia. Moreover, since the perfusate was superoxide dismutase free, this effect was most likely intramyocardial or membrane bound and therefore might be added to protection afforded by circulating superoxide dismutase.

Abstract
Injection of kainic acid (KA) into the rat hippocampus reduced the phosphorylation-related immunoreactivity of the heavy subunit of neurofilament proteins (NF-H). The effect was demonstrated quantitatively with a dot-immunobinding assay and qualitatively by immunoblotting with monoclonal antibodies against phosphorylation-dependent and nonphosphorylation-related epitopes of NF-H. The KA-induced reduction affected 50% of the phosphorylated NF-H in half of the hippocampus after 48 h. At the same time, the nonphosphorylation-related NF-H immunoreactivity increased as revealed by immunoblotting, indicating a shift from phosphorylated to nonphosphorylated NF-H. The effects on NF-H preceded a decrease in content of the neuron-specific enolase, a soluble neuronal cytoplasmic protein. No alterations of the light subunit of neurofilament proteins occurred, suggesting that KA has a preferential effect on NF-H phosphorylation. N-Methyl-D-aspartate administered similarly did not lead to a rapid dephosphorylation of NF-H. We propose that kainate receptor-mediated dephosphorylation in NF-H is involved in the signal transduction of excitatory amino acids with consequences for neuronal functions dependent on intermediary filament phosphorylation.

Abstract
It is generally considered that the rare earth compounds are plasma membrane-impermeable, thus affecting the cells only on their surface. Recently, we found that after repeated injections to mice of large dose of samarium trichloride, a soluble compound of rare earth, samarium aggregates appeared in Kupffer cells and hepatocytes of liver. In this study, we aimed at observing the route by which samarium enters the liver cells and the process of the formation of samarium aggregates. Samarium trichloride was given to Swiss mice at one dose of 70 mg/kg intravenously. Thereafter, at different intervals from 15 min to 48 h after the injection, the samarium in liver was traced dynamically by electron microscopy and X ray microanalysis. From 15 min to 2 h both Kupffer cells and hepatocytes endocytosed samarium-containing particles and formed phagosomes, in which the ingested particles were progressively concentrated. Besides, the small phagosomes fused with each other. Phagocytosis was especially active in Kupffer cells. During the 4 h to 24 h many Kupffer cells were degenerated and broken. In hepatocytes the phagosomes gathered mostly around the bile canaliculi. Groups of highly electron-dense particles were found in the lumen of bile canaliculi, implying the excretion of samarium by bile. At the 48 h, the samarium-containing phagosomies were found still in both kinds of cells in the liver.

Abstract
Ninety two 50-year-old-or-more patients with acute (less than 72 hours) cerebral infarction involved middle cerebral artery region and hematocrit of 40% or more were prospectively randomised to either hemodilution group (by rapid venesection, venous infusion of autologous plasma and 500 ml dextran 40) or standard therapy group. Effects of hemodilution on acute cerebral infarction were evaluated by clinically neurological deficit scores, hemorheological parameters and size of infarction. The results of our clinical trial are: 1. Clinical efficacy of hemodiluted patients is significantly superior to that of standard treatment patients. Effective rates are 63.04% and 41.30% respectively (P less than 0.05). 2. At 48th hour after hemodilution there are profound decreases in hematocrit, blood viscosity at high shear rate and blood viscosity at low shear rate. These changes last more than four weeks. Whereas in standard group, hemorheological parameters do not evidently change. 3. Sizes of cerebral infarction do not distinctly change in both groups between at entry and at the fourth weekend after treatment.

Abstract
We tested the hypothesis that 3,4,5,-trihydroxybenzamidoxime (VF 233), a demonstrated hydroxyl radical scavenger and an effective Fe3+ chelator, attenuates reperfusion injury and improves isovolumic left ventricular function. Eighteen isolated, perfused rabbit hearts with intracavitary balloons were subjected to normothermic, global ischemia until the initiation of ischemic contracture. Effects on the adenine nucleotide pool metabolites were determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography from right ventricular biopsy specimens before ischemia and at 15-minute intervals throughout reperfusion. In the experimental group (n = 9), a 5-mL bolus of 1 mol/L VF 233 was given immediately before reperfusion and followed by a continuous infusion (0.125 mumol/min). The control group (n = 9) received the vehicle solution at identical times. Rabbits treated with VF 233 had significant improvement in left ventricular function (expressed as percent return of left ventricular peak developed pressure) within 15 minutes of reperfusion (55.0 +/- 3.0 versus 66.2 +/- 4.1; p less than 0.05 by analysis of variance) after global ischemia and remained significantly improved throughout the reperfusion period. Myocardial adenine nucleotide pool intermediates were not significantly different between groups. These results demonstrate that administration of VF 233 significantly improves ventricular function but does not affect adenine nucleotide metabolism after ischemia and reperfusion.

Abstract
Biotinylated deoxyadenosine triphosphate (dATP) (Bio-7-dATP) and 3H deoxythymidine triphosphate (dTTP) labeled adenovirus DNA were hybridized in situ to thin sections of Lowicryl K4M-embedded and whole-mount extracted HeLa cells infected with adenovirus. The biotinylated probe was detected by exposing the extracted cells or sections to antibodies against biotin followed by colloidal gold-conjugated secondary antibodies and then critical-point dried while 3H-dTTP labeled probe by electron microscopic autoradiography. On Lowicryl K4M sections, gold particles and silver grains were mainly restricted in the nucleus. Furthermore, whole-mount results suggested that replicating adenovirus DNA is localized on the nuclear matrix of its host cell. In this paper, the described non-radioactive procedures for hybrid detection offered several advantages: a) rapid signal detection; b) superior morphological preservation and spatial resolution; c) precise localization; and d) on Lowicryl K4M sections, signal to noise equivalent to radiolabeling.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the presence of covert HIV-1 infection. SETTING High-risk seronegative homosexual men from the Pittsburgh portion of the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study were examined for the presence of HIV-1 infection. PATIENTS, PARTICIPANTS Ten men (group 1) were examined prospectively for the presence of HIV-1 in their freshly-obtained peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Furthermore, cryopreserved PBMC from 26 men (group 2) at their first visit (1984-1985) were examined retrospectively for the presence of HIV-1. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES PBMC samples from groups 1 and 2 were examined for HIV-1 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using gag, env and strong-stop (long terminal repeat) specific primers. In addition, fresh PBMC samples from group 1 were examined for HIV-1 by virus culture. RESULTS None of the 10 PBMC samples from group 1 were positive for virus culture and PCR. Only one of the 26 men from group 2 was positive for gag and strong-stop DNA sequences. This PCR-positive, seronegative subject was found to be negative for HIV-1 by PCR at follow-up visits up to 48 months later. None of 15 seronegative, low-risk homosexual men and 12 seronegative heterosexual men were found to be PCR-positive for HIV-1. However, six HIV-1-seropositive men were positive by PCR for gag, env, and strong-stop HIV-1 DNA sequences. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest a low prevalence of covert HIV-1 infection in high-risk seronegative homosexual men in our geographic area.

Abstract
A detailed study of the formation of toroidal condensation produced from the 2700 base pair fragments of plasmid PUC13 DNA, induced by metal ions, is introduced. We have extracted several typical intermediate structures based on investigation by electron microscopy, and compared their size distributions. The observations suggest that the formation process of DNA condensation is the process of folding and arranging DNA chains and that of disorder-order transition. The result also indicates that the condensed particles are polymeric, but not randomly aggregative, further proving the toroidal structures are formed in certain regularities.

Abstract
The gastroepiploic artery is an alternate conduit for coronary artery bypass grafting. To test the hypothesis that its vasoreactive properties are different from those of the internal mammary artery, we obtained gastroepiploic artery segments from human gastrectomy specimens. Trimmed internal mammary artery segments were obtained during coronary artery bypass. Ring segments were mounted on a strain gauge and stretched to optimum resting length (90% of the internal circumference at 100 mm Hg). Potassium chloride, serotonin, and norepinephrine were chosen to simulate physiologic vasospasm induced by depolarization, platelet aggregation, or adrenergic stimulation, respectively. Contractions to potassium and a concentration-response curve to serotonin or norepinephrine were obtained. Sodium nitroprusside was used to assess relaxation. Gastroepiploic artery segments had stronger contractions to the depolarizing agent (potassium chloride), adrenergic stimulation (norepinephrine), and product of platelet aggregation (serotonin). The gastroepiploic and internal mammary arteries showed equal sensitivity, measured by concentration causing half-maximal contraction to norepinephrine and serotonin. There was no difference in relaxation to sodium nitroprusside. These data suggest that prevention of platelet-, adrenergic-, or potassium-induced contraction may be more important when the gastroepiploic artery is used as an alternate conduit for coronary artery bypass, reinforcing consideration of nitrovasodilators and platelet inhibitors in the perioperative interval.

Abstract
Hypothyroidism is associated with profound left ventricular dysfunction. Brain-dead organ donors and patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass are chemically hypothyroid with significantly reduced circulating free triiodothyronine (T3). To test the hypothesis that T3 enhances left ventricular function in a hormonally deficient environment, a total of 36 healthy New Zealand White rabbit hearts were studied using a modified Langendorff preparation with Krebs-Henseleit perfusate and intra-ventricular balloon. In 9 normal rabbit hearts a cumulative dose-response curve with logarithmically increasing doses of T3 was obtained. The vehicle solution for T3 dissolution served as control (n = 9). Left ventricular function was assessed from peak developed pressure at baseline and after T3 administration. Triiodothyronine had no effect in normal hearts on peak developed pressure or end-diastolic pressure. In 18 rabbits, the acute effect of T3 administration after ischemia was investigated. Preischemic left ventricular function was measured to serve as baseline, and hearts were subjected to 37 degrees C global ischemia. Triiodothyronine (n = 9) or vehicle (n = 9) was infused during reperfusion, and left ventricular peak developed pressure was measured at 30 and 60 minutes of reperfusion. Recovery of function (expressed as percent return of left ventricular peak developed pressure) was significantly improved within 15 minutes of reperfusion (65.0% +/- 2.1% versus 80.2% +/- 4.1%) and remained significantly improved throughout the reperfusion period (p less than 0.05 by analysis of variance). These data suggest that although T3 possesses no inotropic properties, it significantly improves postischemic left ventricular function. The rapidity of the functional improvement suggests that these effects may be due to plasma membrane-mediated mechanisms.

Abstract
The genetic polymorphism of the complement component I (IF) was investigated in 282 Chinese, 239 Koreans and 198 Japanese. The 3 common IF phenotypes (A, AB and B) and a new rare IF phenotype (BA2) were observed. The obtained allele frequencies are as follows: IF*A = 0.0993 and IF*B = 0.9007 in Chinese; IF*A = 0.0921 and IF*B = 0.9079 in Koreans; IF*A = 0.0985, IF*B = 0.8990 and IF*A2 = 0.0025 in Japanese. These 3 Mongoloid populations showed a much higher degree of IF polymorphism than Caucasian populations.

Abstract
The relationship of Sindbis virus (Sbv) assembly with intermediate filaments was studied by means of whole-mount and DGD embedment-free technique of EM together with the procedure of gentle extraction. In the early stage of Sbv infection, the "virus assembly center" was suspended in the intermediate filament network. In the late stage, the assembling and assembled virus nucleocapsids were associated with intermediate filaments. It is presumable that the virus nucleocapsids may move from the "virus assembly center" to cytoplasmic membrane along the intermediate filaments. Further study using immunolabelling technique indicated that the nonstructural protein 6K of Sbv was probably associated with intermediate filaments as well.

Abstract
The results of topographic analyses of electroencephalographic data obtained from 28 patients with Alzheimer's disease, 29 with multi-infarction dementia and 31 with multiple infarction were compared with those of 30 healthy controls. Both demented groups demonstrated a significant increase in delta and theta power in all the regions. The AD group showed the most significant increase at the bilateral frontal regions. MID and MI groups demonstrated normal alpha power in all regions. But in AD, alpha power in most regions was decreased. The MID group had more asymmetric findings than the AD group.

Abstract
Moschus Bone-setting liquor, ip, 1 ml/kg significantly decreases the rate and frequency of body twisting reaction induced by ip acetic acid, and markedly increases the pain threshold of thermal stimulation in mice. The liquor also reduces apparently the inflammation of mice ear induced by the oil of Fructus Crotonis, and rapidly relieves the traumatic ecchymosis in guinea pigs. Dose response relationship was obtained in the experiment. These results provide evidences for the clinical application of Moschus Bone-setting liquor in the treatment of many traumatic diseases.

Abstract
Prosthetic posterior chamber intraocular lenses can abrade the iris pigmented epithelium, resulting in pigment dispersion, callus formation, and iris adhesions. To evaluate iris abrasion from intraocular lens materials, we developed an in vitro test and studied three materials: polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), silicone, and PMMA surface-modified by covalent binding of a hydrophilic polymer (surface-modified PMMA). Each lens was rubbed 1,000 times on the posterior iris of pigmented rabbits using a total force of 0.5 gram. Scanning electron micrographs of the abraded irides were scored using a subjective, nonparametric numerical scale. Polymethyl-methacrylate lenses removed iris epithelium completely, exposing underlying connective tissue. Silicone lenses damaged an area longer and narrower than the PMMA lens and also exposed connective tissue. Surface-modified PMMA lenses caused only slight surface damage, including flattening or breaking of protruding suspensory ligaments. The test conditions used cannot precisely mimic prolonged lens implantation in living subjects. Nevertheless, the results indicate that iris-lens interaction may be reduced in vivo by using a surface-modified PMMA lens. This hypothesis should be further verified by animal implantation studies.

Abstract
Fibronectin is an extracellular structural protein with the unique ability to bind to both cells and collagen. It plays a major role in the development of the cornea. The universal appearance of fibronectin within 8 hours of corneal wounding has promoted major interest in its wound healing properties. The early clinical evidence for fibronectin treatment of recurrent corneal erosion and certain forms of keratitis sicca is strong. The current major problem preventing commercial use is the antigenic nature of fibronectin derived from separate species. Human pooled fibronectin has been suggested as a commercial source of this ubiquitously occurring protein.

Abstract
Electron microscopic and autoradiographic studies have revealed that the assembly and maturation of duck plague virus (DPV, an intranuclear DNA virus) occur both in the nucleus and in the cytoplasm. A dense cytoplasmic matrix (tentatively called viroplast) is the basic organelle in which the assembly of nucleocapsids occurs. At the early stage of virion maturation, dense particles, approximately 40 nm in size, appear and become assembled nucleocapsid structures later on. As capsids become mature, they obtain a diameter of 95-105 nm. The viroplast matrix gradually decreases in size, and a loose structure appears inside as the nucleocapsids increase in number. When viroplast has almost disappeared, nucleocapsids become abundant, regularly arranged around the cytoplasmic vacuoles. They bud into these vacuoles, thereby acquiring their envelopes. These nucleocapsids differ from those found in the nucleus both in morphology and in distribution. Electron microscopic autoradiography has shown that there is a huge amount of DNA in viroplast. DNA for the assembly of the nucleocapsids in the cytoplasm is derived from the very viroplast.
