Abstract
Light and confocal microscopy was used to study the anatomy and morphology of cat pancreatic ganglia. Intracellular microelectrodes were used to examine the electrophysiological properties of neurons in the head, body, and tail regions of the pancreas and to compare their responses to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). Pancreatic ganglia were oval shaped, joined by interconnecting nerves. Several head to tail gradients were found: (1) ganglion cell numbers decreased from head to tail; (2) the incidence of ongoing synaptic activity was higher for neurons located in the head region; (3) ganglion neurons in the head region received a greater number of converging synaptic inputs; (4) a greater percentage of neurons in the head region responded to 5-HT; (5) a greater percentage of neurons in the head region exhibited depolarizing responses mediated by 5-HT3 receptors; and (6) late slow-excitatory postsynaptic potentials recorded from neurons in the head region were more often antagonized by 5-HT1P receptor antagonists. It was concluded that cat pancreatic ganglia are sites of convergence and integration of synaptic inputs arriving from multiple sources. Serotonergic inputs from enteropancreatic nerves, if they exist in the cat pancreas, would be expected to have a significant influence on the excitability of neurons located in the head region compared to neurons located in the tail region of the pancreas.

Abstract
Silica provides, in fact, a remarkable example of selective toxicity for macrophage by a substance of simple chemical composition and low chemical reactivity. Intraperitoneal injection of silica resulted in an increase of growth rate of subcutaneously implanted mouse sarcoma 180 (S180) in female BALB/c mice and of tumor incidence of two-stage mouse skin carcinogenesis in female ICR mice, but did not show any significant effects on tumor growth and carcinogenesis in male mice. In contrast, local administration of homologous macrophages led to the decrease of growth rate of subcutaneously implanted mouse S180 in female BALB/c mice and of tumor incidence of two-stage mouse skin carcinogenesis in female ICR mice. On the other hand, estradiol, estradiol plus macrophages or a large number of macrophages alone inhibited the tumor growth in male mice. It should be noted that estradiol plus macrophages had the most potent antitumor action among them. These results suggest that macrophages, especially estrogen-activated macrophages, may play an important role in antitumor and antitumor-promoting actions of organisms.

Abstract
The four-compartment model of body composition was studied in 112 healthy black women to develop normative data to be used to assess deviations in illness. Each compartment was measured by an independent method: tritiated water dilution, prompt-gamma neutron activation analysis (for nitrogen), inelastic neutron scattering (for carbon) and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (for calcium). The mean age of the population was 43.2 years. Race was self-declared. The mean values for the four compartments were [kg SE] protein: 9.6 (0.07); mineral 3.0 (0.03); fat 24.2 (0.70); and water 33.1 (0.29). Each of the compartments changed significantly with age (P < .0001). There were declines in total body water, mineral, and protein, whereas fat increased linearly with age. Linear regressions performed on pre- and postmenopausal women showed a significant difference only for the mineral compartment. Various models were fit to the data to adjust for body size and age. The equation y = age + height + weight fits the data as well as the other models. Equations and graphs were developed to assess each compartment using this linear model and may be used to assess the body composition status of healthy and ill black women. Although black women tended to be heavier than white women, after controlling for differences in body weight (and age) black women had a greater mass of protein, mineral, and water and a similar fat store. These differences, while statistically significant, were not of great magnitude. This was a cross-sectional study and suspected trends with aging must be confirmed by a longitudinal study.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of various body-composition assessment techniques to detect changes in soft tissue in older, weight-stable women (50-70 y of age) completing a 1-y randomized, controlled trial of progressive resistance training. The intervention group (n = 20) performed high-intensity strength-training 2 d/wk with five different exercises; the control group (n = 19) was untreated. Hydrostatic weighing, 24-h urinary creatinine, computed tomography of thigh sections, total body potassium, and tritium dilution techniques were used to measure increases in total fat-free mass (FFM) and the muscle and water components of FFM. A decrease in fat mass (by hydrostatic weighing) was seen in the strength-trained women compared with the control subjects (P - 0.01-0.0001). Anthropometry, bioelectric impedance, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and total body nitrogen and carbon did not measure any significant change in soft tissue. The choice of a body-composition technique is important when designing a study expected to affect soft tissue, because not all techniques available are precise enough to detect small changes.

Abstract
In vivo neutron activation (IVNA) analysis has the capacity to measure several total body elements in human subjects. Although it has been considered a criterion method for the past 3 decades, the reliability of IVNA analysis has been tested only in phantom calibrations. In 5 male weight-stable patients with AIDS, total body N, Ca, Cl, Na, P, and C were measured three times in 16 weeks at Brookhaven National Laboratory. With tracer dilution methods for total body water (TBW) by 3H2O and for extracellular water (ECW) by 35SO4 and NaBr, and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), total body calcium (TBCa) and fat percentage were measured within 2 weeks of IVNA measurements. For comparison, tracer dilution for TBW by D2O and ECW by NaBr, plus DXA measurements, were performed three times in 5 weight-stable healthy volunteers. The reliability of the IVNA technique was very high in patients with AIDS; it ranged from 0.99 for total body chloride (TBCI) to 0.84 for total body phosphorus (TBP), and it agreed with phantom calibration results in the literature. The reliability for measuring fat percentage and TBCa by DXA was similar in patients with AIDS and in healthy volunteers. Tracer dilution for measuring TBW by 3H2O in patients with AIDS and by D2O in healthy volunteers had a reliability score similar to those found with IVNA and DXA. The reliability scores for measuring ECW in patients with AIDS by 35SO4 and NaBr, 0.66 and 0.68, respectively, were the lowest among all measurements, whereas the reliability score for NaBr in healthy volunteers was 0.96, as with the other measurements.

Abstract
Two functional parameters evaluated by nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) dye reduction and zymosan particle phagocytosis and a morphological change assessed by the Wright-Giemsa stain of human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60 cells) were used to determine the extent of HL-60 cell differentiation induced by tubeimoside 1. The results revealed that under the action of tubeimoside 1, HL-60 cells could be induced to differentiate to more mature cells with the functional characteristics of granulocytes. Therefore, tubeimoside 1 could be considered as a promising antileukemic agent for further animal trials.

Abstract
Although skeletal muscle (SM) is a major body component, whole body measurement methods remain limited and inadequately investigated. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the Burkinshaw in vivo neutron activation analysis (IVNA)-whole body 40K-counting and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) methods of estimating SM by comparison to adipose tissue-free SM measured using multiscan computerized axial tomography (CT). In the Burkinshaw method the potassium-to-nitrogen ratios of SM and non-SM lean tissue are assumed constant; in the DXA method the ratio of appendicular SM to total SM is assumed constant at 0.75. Seventeen healthy men [77.5 +/- 13.8 (SD) kg body wt] and eight men with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS; 65.5 +/- 7.6 kg) completed CT, IVNA, and DXA studies. SM measured by CT was 34.4 +/- 6.2 kg for the healthy subjects and 27.2 +/- 4.0 kg for the AIDS patients. Compared with CT, the Burkinshaw method underestimated SM by an average of 6.9 kg (20.1%, P = 0.0001) and 6.3 kg (23.2%, P = 0.01) in the healthy men and the men with AIDS, respectively. The DXA method minimally overestimated SM in both groups (2.0 kg and 5.8% in healthy men, P = 0.001; 1.4 kg and 5.1% in men with AIDS, P = 0.16). This overestimate could be explained by a higher actual than assumed ratio of DXA-measured appendicular SM to total body SM (actual = 0.79 +/- 0.05, assumed = 0.75). The current study results reveal that large errors are present in the Burkinshaw SM method and that substantial refinements in the models that form the basis of this IVNA approach are needed. The model on which the DXA-SM method is based also needs further minor refinements, but this is a promising in vivo approach because of less radiation exposure and lower cost than the IVNA and CT methods.

Abstract
The delayed-gamma neutron activation facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory was originally calibrated using an anthropomorphic hollow phantom filled with solutions containing predetermined amounts of Ca. However, 99% of the total Ca in the human body is not homogeneously distributed but contained within the skeleton. Recently, an artificial skeleton was designed, constructed, and placed in a bottle phantom to better represent the Ca distribution in the human body. Neutron activation measurements of an anthropomorphic and a bottle (with no skeleton) phantom demonstrate that the difference in size and shape between the two phantoms changes the total body calcium results by less than 1%. To test the artificial skeleton, two small polyethylene jerry-can phantoms were made, one with a femur from a cadaver and one with an artificial bone in exactly the same geometry. The femur was ashed following the neutron activation measurements for chemical analysis of Ca. Results indicate that the artificial bone closely simulates the real bone in neutron activation analysis and provides accurate calibration for Ca measurements. Therefore, the calibration of the delayed-gamma neutron activation system is now based on the new bottle phantom containing an artificial skeleton. This change has improved the accuracy of measurement for total body calcium. Also, the simple geometry of this phantom and the artificial skeleton allows us to simulate the neutron activation process using a Monte Carlo code, which enables us to calibrate the system for human subjects larger and smaller than the phantoms used as standards.

Abstract
As part of a multicenter research project, we compared dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) instruments at three research centers (sites 1, 2 and 3) to determine both intra- and intersite variability of bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD), and bone area (BA). Scans of the total body and lumbar spine were performed in duplicate on five humans (in vivo), and scans of the total body were performed on two whole body phantoms with artificial skeletons and thickness overlays (in vitro) at all sites over 15 days. The average intrasite variability in two consecutive total body BMD measurements, expressed as a percent difference, was significantly higher in vitro, 1.74 +/- 1.97%, than in vivo, 0.71 +/- 0.38% (p < 0.05). Average intrasite variability of the in vivo lumbar spine BMD was 1.08 +/- 1.12%. The intersite coefficients of variation for all BMD, BMC, and BA measurements were < 2.0%. The total body BMD from site 2 was systematically lower than at sites 1 and 3 both in vivo and in vitro (p < 0.05) with no differences in BMC and BA. Although significant, the total body BMD differences between sites were small (< 1.2%) in vivo compared with in vitro (< 2.6%) and are encouraging for the comparison and pooling of human data from multicenter trials, provided that appropriate standardized cross-calibration and analysis procedures are applied.

Abstract
The four-compartment model of body composition was examined in 155 white women through measurement of total body carbon (TBC), nitrogen (TBN), calcium (TBCa), and water levels. The age (mean +/- SD) of the population was 51.4 +/- 13.5 years, and values for the four compartments were as follows (in kilograms): protein 8.9 +/- 1.0, water 30.9 +/- 3.5, mineral 2.6 +/- 0.4, and fat 22.6 +/- 7.3. There was a linear change with age for protein and water, whereas mineral and fat were curvilinear. These latter two compartments also showed differences in premenopausal and postmenopausal rates of change. Various models were fit to the data to adjust for body size and age. Each of the four compartments (mineral, water, fat, and protein) changed with age, with fat increasing and the other compartments declining. The equation, y = age + age2 + height + weight, fit the data as well as the other models. Equations are provided to assess body composition in populations with disorders of nutrition, as well as other illnesses, using height, weight, and age as covariates. Since this was a cross-sectional study, longitudinal studies will have to be performed to confirm the accuracy of rates of change with age predicted with each compartment.

Abstract
As tubeimoside I isolated from Bolbostemma paniculatum (Maxim.) Franquet (Cucurbitaceae) has been shown to suppress tumor promoter effects, tubeimoside III from the same plant was tested in vitro and in vivo against the action of the tumor promoter 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA). Tubeimoside III, the natural analog of tubeimoside I, also had an anti-inflammatory effect on mouse ear edema induced by arachidonic acid and TPA and a potent anti-tumor promoting effect on two-stage carcinogenesis of mouse skin after topical application. However, the important difference in bioactivities between tubeimosides I and III is the non-activity of tubeimoside III as an inhibitor of tumor promotion if administered orally. Differences in metabolism connected with different routes of the compound may be one of a number of explanations of the important difference.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is a readily available technique that has recently been applied to measurement of body composition. In order to validate this technique, results from DEXA were compared with fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) measured by total body levels of potassium (TBK), nitrogen (TBN), water (TBW) and carbon (TBC). METHODS A healthy population of 127 white women and 38 black women with a body mass index of 18-30 were recruited. RESULTS Compared with each of the other methods, DEXA overestimated FM and underestimated FFM. The slopes of the FM by DEXA versus the FM from each of the four methods were approximately the same, with a s.e.e. ranging from 2.4 to 3.0 units. The slopes of DEXA in comparison to FFM, however, ranged from 0.61 to 0.74 and were significantly less than unity, with a s.e.e. of 1.6 to 2.4 units. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that at high values of FFM, DEXA is measuring something different from the FFM measured by TBW, TBN and TBK. The program for separating bone and soft tissue and for separating soft tissue into fat and lean at higher values in the DEXA method may need to be adjusted.

Abstract
Sinonasal melanoma is a rare malignancy. We present the clinicopathologic review of 18 cases seen at the British Columbia Cancer Agency between 1976 and 1992: 13 men and five women, mean age 66 years (range 32-88). Patients presented with nasal obstruction and bleeding (n = 8), obstruction alone (n = 4), bleeding alone (n = 5) or pain (n = 1). Those with bleeding presented with a shorter duration of symptoms than those with obstruction alone. All patients with obstruction alone died of their disease, while all patients with bleeding alone are alive or have died of an unrelated cause; four out of eight patients with both obstruction and bleeding are alive. There was no significant relationship between treatment modality and outcome. Histologic subtypes included epithelioid (n = 10), spindle-cell (n = 4), small-cell (n = 3) and pleomorphic (n = 1). Eight out of 11 cases from whom samples of paraffin-embedded tissue were available showed more prominent staining for HMB-45 than for S-100. In two cases, only rare (< 0.1%) cells stained for S-100. Cell type, mitotic rate and P53 expression were unrelated to disease outcome. Six out of seven patients with < or = 10% of cells showing intense staining for PCNA were alive or had died of an unrelated cause, while three out of four with > 10% staining died of their disease.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
In order to study the relationship between the basement immunological changes, TCM Syndrome Differentiation and prognosis, alkaline phosphates antialkaline phosphatase (APAAP) and ELISA assay were used to determine the T lymphocyte subsets, the platelet associated antibody (PAIgG, PAIgA, PAIgM) and plasma antiplatelet-autoantibodies (GP II b, GP III a, GP I b) in 55 chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and 53 healthy subjects as control. The results indicated that the immunological changes was closely related to the prognosis, while the TCM Syndrome Differentiation was also related to it, which denoted that it is significant to investigate both factors in guiding treatment and assessing the prognosis.

Abstract
The potential association of dental restorations and tongue carcinoma was studied. We reviewed the available pretreatment dental records of 133 patients with carcinoma of the tongue seen at the British Columbia Cancer Agency between 1958 and 1992. 75 patients had teeth adjacent to the ipsilateral side of the cancer (involved side) and the contralateral (control) side of the tongue, resulting in 150 tongue/teeth pairings. Overall there was no significant association between the presence of dental fillings and tongue carcinoma, as the prevalence of bilateral dental restorations was high. Dental restorations were found in 6 patients on the involved side only. Only 1 patient developed a cancer adjacent to normal teeth with contralateral restorations. We feel that this observation merits more study. Meanwhile, careful assessment of dentition and aggressive treatment of dysplastic lesions are warranted.

Abstract
One hundred sixty-four healthy black and white women aged 24-79 y were studied to determine to what extent bone mass is determined by fat-free mass (FFM). A multicomponent approach to body composition, with techniques that are not interdependent, was used. The measurements included dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), prompt gamma-neutron-activation analysis, inelastic neuron scattering, tritiated water dilution, and whole-body counting. Univariate correlations showed significant relationships of all the fat-free measures and most of the fat measures with bone mass measured by total body calcium (TBCa). Data from pre- and postmenopausal women were analyzed separately. The average FFM by itself explained 50-55% of the variability in TBCa whereas the average fat mass by itself explained only 5-18% of the variability. The contribution of fat mass was consistently greater in postmenopausal than in premenopausal women. When stepwise multiple regression with TBCa was performed to determine the influence of adding fat mass, height, and race to the relationship of FFM with TBCa, the variation explained by average FFM was 56% premenopausal, 50% postmenopausal; by height 3% premenopausal, 6% postmenopausal; by race 4% premenopausal, 8% postmenopausal; and average fat mass was not significant. Average values for fat mass and FFM were obtained by averaging all the methods used. In conclusion, in black and white healthy women, although bone mass may be partially influenced by fatness or race, the major determinant of bone mass is FFM. Fat mass may play a more important role in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Varus deformity of the knee is common in young children who have suffered from fulminating purpura. This study was directed at the anatomic features of the vascularisation of the upper end of the tibia that might account for such deformation. It was based on the dissection of 28 anatomic specimens prepared by injection of Indian ink into the vascular trunk. 16 specimens were diaphanised for better analysis of the intracartilaginous distribution of the vessels. The study showed that the vascularisation of the medial condyle of the tibia is poor and of terminal nature, which may explain the occurrence of ischemic growth disorders following fulminating purpura.

Abstract
The clinical observation of repeated infantile respiratory tract infection treated by Kanggan Zhibao (KGZB) oral liquor and controlled with levomisole was studied. The results showed that the total effective rate of KGZB was 93.2%, which was significantly more effective than that of the control group (P < 0.05). In relieving symptoms and signs, KGZB was also superior to the control group (P < 0.05). Both the KGZB and the levomisole could enhance and modulate the immunity function of T-lymphocyte and they could increase RBC-C3b receptor rosette formation rate, so that it had no significant difference in comparing with the healthy group (P > 0.05). It suggested that the therapeutic mechanism was related to this.

Abstract
The work was carried out to investigate electrophysiological properties of neurons of cat intrapancreatic ganglia in vitro by means of intracellular recordings. The mean value of resting membrane potential was -58.5 +/- 8.7 mV (chi +/- s chi, n = 35) with a range from -45 to 72 mV. The mean values of membrane input resistance (Rm), time constant (tau) and capacity (Cm) were 68.6 +/- 5.1M omega, 3.4 +/- 0.2 ms and 50.8 +/- 3.9pF (n = 28), respectively. When depolarizing electrotonic potentials induced by intracellular injection of depolarizing current pulses (0.05-0.5nA, 5ms) reached the threshold potential level, all of the neurons could fire action potentials. The threshold, amplitude, overshoot and duration of spikes were 19.2 +/- 0.5mV, 81.0 +/- 1.7mV, 22.6 +/- 0.9mV and 2.9 +/- 0.1ms (n = 35), respectively. The spike was followed by a prolonged after spike hyperpolarization with amplitude of 20.5 +/- 0.8mV (n = 35). In most of neurons, fast excitatory postsynaptic potentials (f-EPSP) or orthodromic action potentials were recorded during stimulation of nerve trunks attached to the intrapancreatic ganglia. The mean values of amplitude, duration of the f-EPSP and conduction velocity of the nerves were 8.9 +/- 0.7mV, 25.8 +/- 1.9ms and 0.48 +/- 0.04m/s (n = 24), respectively. The ongoing synaptic activity was observed in all of cells. Moreover, f-Epsp, was induced by acetylcholine mediated through nicotinic receptors.

Abstract
Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases are involved in metabolism of hostplant allelochemicals by larval Lepidoptera. Biochemical purification of the P450 polypeptide induced in Papilio polyxenes (black swallowtail) larvae in response to xanthotoxin, a linear furanocoumarin, has allowed us to clone cDNAs encoding two allelic variants of the CYP6B1 locus. Expression of these alleles in lepidopteran cell lines using baculovirus expression vectors has demonstrated that both P450 isoforms metabolize substantial amounts of linear furanocoumarins, such as xanthotoxin and bergapten, but not angular furanocoumarins, such as angelicin and sphondin. These linear furanocoumarins are ubiquitous constituents of the hostplants of P. polyxenes. The efficiency of linear furanocoumarin metabolism is strongly affected by the nature of the substituents on the benzene ring; methoxy-derivatives are metabolized more efficiently than are derivatives with smaller (hydroxy-) or larger (8-O isopentenyl) groups. Metabolism of either bergapten or xanthotoxin is inhibited in the presence of the other. In addition, metabolism of linear furanocoumarins is inhibited by the presence of nonmetabolizable angular furanocoumarins, indicating that the active site of CYP6B1 binds angular furanocoumarins. The reactivities described here indicate that P. polyxenes larvae express at least two selective furanocoumarin-metabolic P450s: CYP6B1, which metabolizes a discrete set of linear furanocoumarins, and another P450, as yet unidentified, which metabolizes angular furanocoumarins more efficiently than does CYP6B1.

Abstract
A description is given of the calibration and performance of the upgraded facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) for measuring total body nitrogen using the technique of prompt gamma neutron activation analysis. With the improved calibration, total body nitrogen can be more accurately measured not only in normal subjects but also in obese and wasted patients. Body hydrogen is used as an internal standard. We examined the effect of a heavy-water premoderator on the uniformity of composite sensitivity, nitrogen and hydrogen measurement statistics, and dose to the subject. The calibration technique corrects the ratio of nitrogen-to-hydrogen counts measured from the subject for body size. Additionally, a correction for subcutaneous adipose tissue on the nitrogen-to-hydrogen count ratio is introduced. The newly upgraded BNL facility provides precision in counting statistics using a Remcal anthropomorphic phantom filled with a tissue-equivalent solution of 2.1% for a body dose of 0.35 mSv using a 2.5 cm D2O premoderator. The measurements were made at five 20 cm sections, counting for 200 s per section.

Abstract
Human body composition can be organized into five levels; atomic, molecular, cellular, tissue-system and whole body. Six elements (carbon, nitrogen, calcium, potassium, sodium and chlorine) can be directly measured in vivo at the atomic level using three neutron-activation systems at Brookhaven National Laboratory. When combined with an estimate of total body water, the six elements can be used to quantify the major chemical components at molecular level. In the present report, we first describe the neutron-activation approach to evaluating chemical compartments in vivo. Then, we present an example of how in vivo estimates of human chemical composition can be used to study the validity of two-compartment indirect methods of quantifying total body fat in the elderly. Our studies and the work of other investigators at Brookhaven National Laboratory suggest that neutron activation analysis provides an important opportunity to study the relation between aging and changes in elemental and chemical composition of humans in vivo.

Abstract
Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder causing chylomicronemia, has a high prevalence in the French-Canadian population of Quebec. The molecular basis of LPL deficiency has been defined, and two major mutations have been shown to have an uneven geographic distribution. Two mutations, one at residue 188 (M-188) and the other at residue 207 (M-207), are described here; they account for 95% of the mutant alleles. The carrier rate of M-188 was highest in western Quebec (1/326) but that of M-207 was much higher in the eastern part of the province (1/85). Genealogical reconstruction has revealed that both mutations were introduced to the French-Canadian population by migrants from France in the seventeenth century. M-188 is likely to have a Scottish ancestor, whereas M-207 appears to be of French origin.

Abstract
Mutations in the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) gene, leading to partial or total inactivation of the enzyme, result in a hereditary clinical syndrome called familial LPL deficiency. The French Canadian population, which is primarily and historically located in the province of Québec, has the highest worldwide frequency of LPL-deficient patients. We have analyzed the prevalence, spatial distribution, and genealogy in the Québec population of a LPL gene mutation, M-207 (P207L in conventional notation), which changes the amino acid proline to leucine in position 207 of the LPL protein and inactivates the enzyme. Our results show that M-207 is the most prevalent LPL gene mutation among French Canadians and accounts for the largest proportion of LPL-deficient patients in this population. Genealogical reconstruction of French Canadian LPL-deficient patients point to 16 founders of M-207, all of whom migrated to Québec in the early seventeenth century from the north-western part of France, especially from the region of Perche. Most of the carriers of M-207 are, at present, found in Charlevoix, Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean regions of eastern Québec. On the basis of the number of homozygote M-207 LPL-deficient patients so far identified, we estimate that there are at least 31,000 carriers of this mutation in the province of Québec. This constitutes a large pool of individuals at risk for atherosclerosis and other lipid-related diseases, since LPL deficiency is considered to be a significant contributing factor in the etiology and development of these diseases.

Abstract
The T-lymphocyte subsets of 38 patients with chronic aplastic anemia (CAA) were measured by monoclonal antibody (McAb) and ABC method and the relationship of T-lymphocyte subsets and symptom complex groups by traditional Chinese medicine theory were also analysed. It was shown that the T subsets of patients with CAA have remarkable changes: Ts (41.3 +/- 11.2%) increased more than the control (22.9 +/- 4.5%), Th/Ts decreased significantly more than the normal control (0.98 +/- 0.38 to 1.59 +/- 0.38). From the group of deficiency of both vital energy and blood to the group of deficiency of Kidney-yang to the group of deficiency of Kidney-Yin to the group of deficiency of both Kidney-Yang and Kidney-Yin, the Th lymphocyte gradually decreased, Ts lymphocyte successfully increased (from 33.8 +/- 7.9% to 57.7 +/- 7.5%), Th/Ts ratio declined (from 1.29 +/- 0.36 to 0.57 +/- 0.19). The Th/Ts ratio of the latter two groups decreased more than the former two groups (P less than 0.01). These results indicated that the T lymphocyte subsets and symptom complex group of patients with CAA were closely related and when deficient Yang affects Yin the immunologic function of body has a more obvious change. This revealed the connotation of Kidney-Yin and Kidney-Yang on the immuno-regulating cells (T lymphocyte subsets) level.

Abstract
131 cases of repeated infantile respiratory tract infection were selected and divided into 3 groups: fang-gan mixture (FGM) group, levamisole group, and the control group. The results showed that the total effective rate of FGM was 97.7%, which was more effective than the levamisole group. Its effective rate still reached 90.9% after 1 month of stopping treatment, and compared with the treatment period, there were no significant differences (P greater than 0.05). There were three parts of changes on clinical manifestation after patients using FGM: (1) The occurrence times reduced obviously; (2) the course of disease shortened obviously; (3) syndrome of patients relieved obviously. FGM was also more effective than the levamisole group in relieving symptoms and signs (P less than 0.05). Both the FGM and the levamisole groups could increase the body immunity function. After treatment both of salivary sIgA and PHA skin test were higher than before treatment (P less than 0.05).

Abstract
The effect of electrical stimulation of hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC) on intragastric pressure (IGP) was observed on 80 Wistar rats anaesthetized with urethan. The main results are as follows: (1) Electrical stimulation of ARC could cause an obvious decrease of IGP. (2) The reduction of IGP induced by electrical stimulation of ARC was not affected by intracerebroventricular injection of naloxone. (3) After lesioning of locus coeruleus or dorsal raphe, the effect of ARC stimulation was depressed. The results suggest that the locus coeruleus and dorsal raphe nucleus may be involved in the reduction of IGP induced by ARC stimulation, but without the involvement of beta-endorphinergic neurons.

Abstract
The effect of electrical stimulation of arcuate nucleus (ARC) on intragastric pressure (IGP) was examined on 68 Wistar rats anaesthetized with urethan. The results were as follows: (1) Stimulation of ARC could induce an obvious decrease of IGP. (2) This effect was not blocked by atropine but partially by vagotomy. (3) Extirpation of celiac neural plexus or intramuscular injection of phentolamine could obviously reduce the suppression of IGP induced by ARC stimulation, but intramuscular injection of propranolol had no such effect. (4) After vagotomy plus extirpation of celiac neural plexus, IGP could still be made a decrease by stimulating ARC. In view of the present investigation, it is suggested that (1) Both sympathetic nerve and vagus are involved in the reduction of IGP induced by ARC stimulation, the former and the latter routes being respectively mediated by alpha-adrenoceptor and non-cholinergic, non-adrenergic fibres. (2) Humoral factors may be also involved in this effect of ARC stimulation.

Abstract
The effects of phentolamine and propranolol on intragastric pressure were observed in 46 Wistar rats. The results showed that: (1) phentolamine did not cause significant changes in the intragastric pressure of intact rats, but, it could obviously decrease the intragastric pressure of rats with vagotomy. (2) propranolol increased the intragastric pressure of intact rats or rats with vagotomy. We concluded that (1) tonic action of adrenergic nerves in stomach is mainly inhibitory; (2) beta-adrenoceptors, which may be present on the smooth muscle of stomach mediate sympathetic inhibition; (3) alpha-adrenoceptors, which come into play through vagus, mediate inhibition, but alpha-adrenoceptors, which may be present on the smooth muscle, mediate sympathetic excitation.
