Study of sound localization by owls and its relevance to humans

Human psychoacoustical studies have been the main sources of information from which the brain mechanisms of sound localization are inferred. The value of animal models would be limited, if humans and the animals did not share the same perceptual experience and the neural mechanisms for it. Barn owls and humans use the same method of computing interaural time differences for localization in the horizontal plane. The behavioral performance of owls and its neural bases are consistent with some of the theories developed for human sound localization. Neural theories of sound localization largely owe their origin to the study of sound localization by humans, even though little is known about the physiological properties of the human auditory system. One of these ideas is binaural cross-correlation which assumes that the human brain performs a process similar to mathematical cross-correlation to measure the interaural time difference for localization in the horizontal plane. The most complete set of neural evidence for this theory comes from the study of sound localization and its brain mechanisms in barn owls, although partial support is also available from studies on laboratory mammals. Animal models of human sensory perception make two implicit assumptions; animals and humans experience the same percept and the same neural mechanism underlies the creation of the percept. These assumptions are hard to prove for obvious reason. This article reviews several lines of evidence that similar neural mechanisms must underlie the perception of sound locations in humans and owls.

[Neural mechanisms of sound localization in owls]

Barn owls localize sound by using the interaural time difference of the horizontal plane and the interaural intensity difference for the vertical plane. The owl's auditory system possesses the two binaural cues in separate pathways in the brainstem. Owls use a process similar to cross-correlation to derive interaural time differences. Convergence of different frequency bands in the inferior colliculus solves the problems of phase-ambiguity which is inherent in cross-correlating periodic signals. The two pathways converge in the external nucleus of the inferior colliculus to give rise to neurons that are selective for combinations of the two cues. These neurons form a map of auditory space. The map projects to the optic tectum to form a bimodal map which, in turn, projects to a motor map for head turning. The visual system calibrates the auditory space map during ontogeny in which acoustic variables change. In addition to this tectal pathway, the forebrain can also control the sound-localizing behaviour.

Pineal gland of a nocturnal bird, Indian spotted owlet, Athene brama: morphological and endocrine observations

It has been reported that owls (Strigiformes) do not have a pineal gland. However, our light microscopy study revealed an intermediate form of tubulofollicular and solid-type large pineal gland in a tropical owlet, Athene brama. The epithelial cells forming follicles (6-8) in the distal region and the solid cluster of parenchymal cells of different diameters in the proximal region anteriorly tapered with a long cylindrical stalk and continued into commissural organs and choroid plexus. The intrapineal localization of perivascular nerve fibers and blood vessels clearly explained the sympathetic innervation as well as vascularization of this neuroendocrine gland. Further, electron microscopy revealed a developed intracellular structure of the pinealocytes with a large number of mitochondria, Golgi bodies, and granular as well as clear vesicles in the process terminals. The evidence of intrapinealocyte lipid droplets and dense bodies and a moderate amount of melatonin in plasma (ranging from 100-365 pg/mL) during different reproductive phases finally proved a defined secretory activity of the gland in this tropical, nocturnal bird.

Female barn owls (Tyto alba) advertise good genes

The good genes hypothesis of sexual selection postulates that ornamentation signals superior genetic quality to potential mates. Support for this hypothesis comes from studies on male ornamentation only, while it remains to be shown that female ornamentation may signal genetic quality as well. Female barn owls (Tyto alba) display more black spots on their plumage than males. The expression of this plumage trait has a genetic basis and it has been suggested that males prefer to mate with females displaying more black spots. Given the role of parasites in the evolution of sexually selected traits and of the immune system in parasite resistance, we hypothesize that the extent of female plumage 'spottiness' reflects immunological defence. We assessed the genetic variation in specific antibody production against a non-pathogenic antigen among cross-fostered nestlings and studied its covariation with the plumage spottiness of genetic parents. The magnitude of the antibody response was positively correlated with the plumage spottiness of the genetic mother but not of the genetic father. Our study thereby provides the first experimental support, to our knowledge, for the hypothesis that female ornamentation signals genetic quality.

Body reserves and nutritional needs during laying preparation in barn owls

To investigate the composition of the body reserves made during pre-laying by breeding European barn owls (Tyto alba), we have analysed the body composition of captive breeding and non-breeding females sacrificed during the laying period. The data obtained were compared to the daily requirement for egg formation obtained by an egg composition analysis and the timing of egg synthesis. This study demonstrates that body mass gain observed in breeding females (+ 38.3 g after eggs in formation and gonadal tractus were removed) was not the consequence of an accumulation of body fuels like lipids but of mainly water and lean material. The lipidic reserves were found to be less important in breeding than in non-breeding females and their localisation modified; lipids were absent from medullar bones in breeding females which liberated room for other storage. The subcutaneous tissue, which was homogeneous in non-breeding females, was located principally under the brood patch in breeding females. Nutrients and energy required during egg formation could be obtained without modification of daily food intake. These results show that a laying event can be initiated in 14 days and that the onset of reproduction is not triggered by body condition in barn owls. The water accumulation observed is suggested to be the mere consequence of an increase of protein metabolism (egg and moult). These results intimate that the body mass increase observed in diurnal and nocturnal raptors during laying preparation, interpreted as an energy safety strategy, ought to be reconsidered.

Horizontal-disparity tuning of neurons in the visual forebrain of the behaving barn owl

Stereovision plays a major role in depth perception of animals having frontally-oriented eyes, most notably primates, cats, and owls. Neuronal mechanisms of disparity sensitivity have only been investigated in anesthetized owls so far. In the current study, responses of 160 visual Wulst neurons to static random-dot stereograms (RDS) were recorded via radiotelemetry in awake, fixating barn owls. The majority of neurons (76%) discharged significantly as a function of horizontal disparity in RDS. The distribution of preferred disparities mirrored the behaviorally relevant range of horizontal disparities that owls can exploit for depth vision. Most tuning profiles displayed periodic modulation and could well be fitted with a Gabor function as expected if disparity detectors were implemented according to the disparity energy model. Corresponding to this observation, a continuum of tuning profiles was observed rather than discrete categories. To assess a possible clustering of neurons with similar disparity-tuning properties, single units, and multi-unit activity recorded at individual recording sites were compared. Only a minority of neurons were clustered according to their disparity-tuning properties, suggesting that neurons in the visual Wulst are not organized into columns by preferred disparity. To assess whether variable vergence eye movements influenced tuning data, we correlated tuning peak positions on a trial-by-trial basis for units that were recorded simultaneously. The general lack of significant correlation between single-trial peak positions of simultaneously recorded units indicated that vergence, if at all, had only a minor influence on the data. Our study emphasizes the significance of visual Wulst neurons in analyzing stereoscopic depth information and introduces the barn owl as a second model system to study stereopsis in awake, behaving animals.

Pupillary dilation response as an indicator of auditory discrimination in the barn owl

The pupil of an awake, untrained, head-restrained barn owl was found to dilate in response to sounds with a latency of about 25 ms. The magnitude of the dilation scaled with signal-to-noise ratio. The dilation response habituated when a sound was repeated, but recovered when stimulus frequency or location was changed. The magnitude of the recovered response was related to the degree to which habituating and novel stimuli differed and was therefore exploited to measure frequency and spatial discrimination. Frequency discrimination was examined by habituating the response to a reference tone at 3 kHz or 6 kHz and determining the minimum change in frequency required to induce recovery. We observed frequency discrimination of 125 Hz at 3 kHz and 250 Hz at 6 kHz--values comparable to those reported by others using an operant task. Spatial discrimination was assessed by habituating the response to a stimulus from one location and determining the minimum horizontal speaker separation required for recovery. This yielded the first measure of the minimum audible angle in the barn owl: 3 degrees for broadband noise and 4.5 degrees for narrowband noise. The acoustically evoked pupillary dilation is thus a promising indicator of auditory discrimination requiring neither training nor aversive stimuli.

Electrodiagnostic evaluation of peripheral nerve function in rheas and barred owls

OBJECTIVE

To establish reference values for electrodiagnostic evaluation of peripheral nerve function in birds.

ANIMALS

6 rheas and 6 barred owls.

PROCEDURE

Birds were anesthetized with propofol or isoflurane in oxygen. Using a computer-based electromyograph system and needle electrodes for stimulation and recording, electromyography (EMG) was performed on the pectoral, biceps brachialis, and gastrocnemius muscles, and evoked EMG was performed on the tibial and ulnar nerves. Motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) was calculated. Repetitive stimulation was performed on these 2 nerves. Late F waves were recorded for each nerve, when possible.

RESULTS

Activity was evident during insertion of the electrodes, but muscles tested were electrically quiescent after spontaneous EMG. Motor nerve conduction velocity was faster in the tibial nerve than ulnar nerve but did not differ significantly between species. Mean +/- SEM MNCV was 132.3+/-7.8 m/s for the tibial nerve and 59.7+/-7.8 m/s for the ulnar nerve. A significant difference was not observed in responses at the fourth or ninth stimulation during repetitive stimulation. Subsequent to the initial stimulation, amplitudes were +/-22.7% of the initial motor potential amplitude. Recorded F waves were inconsistent, which may have been associated with technique.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Reference range (mean +/-2 SEM) for MNCV was 34.1 to 75.3 m/s for the ulnar nerve and 116.7 to 147.9 m/s for the tibial nerve in barred owls and rheas. After repetitive stimulation, motor potential amplitudes may be +/-22.7% of the initial amplitude response.

Barn owl (Tyto alba) siblings vocally negotiate resources

Current theory proposes that nestlings beg to signal hunger level to parents honestly, or that siblings compete by escalating begging to attract the attention of parents. Although begging is assumed to be directed at parents, barn owl (Tyto alba) nestlings vocalize in the presence but also in the absence of the parents. Applying the theory of asymmetrical contests we experimentally tested three predictions of the novel hypothesis that in the absence of the parents siblings vocally settle contests over prey items to be delivered next by a parent. This 'sibling negotiation hypothesis' proposes that offspring use each others' begging vocalization as a source of information about their relative willingness to contest the next prey item delivered. In line with the hypothesis we found that (i) a nestling barn owl refrains from vocalization when a rival is more hungry, but (ii) escalates once the rival has been fed by a parent, and (iii) nestlings refrain from and escalate vocalization in experimentally enlarged and reduced broods, respectively. Thus, when parents are not at the nest a nestling vocally refrains when the value of the next delivered prey item will be higher for its nest-mates. These findings are the exact opposite of what current models predict for begging calls produced in the presence of the parents.

Sex ratio and fledging success of supplementary-fed Tengmalm's owl broods

A nest box population of Tengmalm's owls (Aegolius funereus) in northern Sweden was studied to investigate the effects of extra food on the sex ratio between hatching and fledging in this sexually size-dimorphic species. The brood size and brood sex ratio of supplementary-fed and control broods were compared. Newly hatched nestlings were blood sampled and sexed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the sex-linked CHD1Z and CHD1W genes. The brood sex ratio at hatching was strongly male biased (65%); this was also the case in broods where all eggs hatched (72%). There was no relationship between hatch order and sex ratio, and hatching sex ratio did not vary significantly with laying date. Brood size decreased between hatching and fledging, but did not differ between fed and control broods at either stage. Brood sex ratio did not differ between hatching and fledging, and fledging sex ratio did not differ between fed and control broods. It was concluded that, at least during the year in which the study was carried out, feeding had no effect on brood reduction, and that male and female nestlings did not show any differential mortality. The mechanisms behind the male-biased sex ratio at hatching, and any possible adaptive reasons for it, are not known.

Abnormal auditory experience induces frequency-specific adjustments in unit tuning for binaural localization cues in the optic tectum of juvenile owls

Early auditory experience shapes the auditory spatial tuning of neurons in the barn owl's optic tectum in a frequency-dependent manner. We examined the basis for this adaptive plasticity in terms of changes in tuning for frequency-specific interaural time differences (ITDs) and level differences (ILDs), the dominant sound localization cues. We characterized broadband and narrowband ITD and ILD tuning in normal owls and in owls raised with an acoustic filtering device in one ear that caused frequency-dependent changes in sound timing and level. In normal owls, units were tuned to frequency-specific ITD and ILD values that matched those produced by sound sources located in their visual receptive fields. In contrast, in device-reared owls, ITD tuning at most sites was shifted from normal by approximately 55 microsec toward open-ear leading for 4 kHz stimuli and 15 microsec toward the opposite-ear leading for 8 kHz stimuli, reflecting the acoustic effects of the device. ILD tuning was shifted in the adaptive direction by approximately 3 dB for 4 kHz stimuli and 8 dB for 8 kHz stimuli, but these shifts were substantially smaller than expected based on the acoustic effects of the device. Most sites also exhibited conspicuously abnormal frequency-response functions, including a strong dependence on stimulus ITD and a reduction of normally robust responses to 6 kHz stimuli. The results demonstrate that the response properties of high-order auditory neurons in the optic tectum are adjusted during development to reflect the influence of frequency-specific features of the binaural localization cues experienced by the individual.

Influence of contralateral acoustic stimulation on distortion-product and spontaneous otoacoustic emissions in the barn owl

The avian auditory papilla provides an interesting object on which to study efferent influences, because whereas a significant population of hair cells in birds is not afferently innervated, all hair cells are efferently innervated (Fischer, 1992, 1994a, b). Previous studies in mammals using contralateral sound to stimulate the efferent system demonstrated a general suppressive effect on spontaneous and click-evoked, as well as on distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). As little is known about the effects of contralateral stimulation on hearing in birds, we studied the effect of such stimuli (broadband noise, pure tones) on the amplitude of the DPOAE 2f(1)-f(2) and on spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAE) in the barn owl, Tyto alba. For the DPOAE measurements, fixed primary-tone pairs [f(1)=8.875 kHz (ratio=1.2), f(1)=8.353 kHz (ratio=1.15) and f(1)=7.889 kHz (ratio=1.1)] were presented and the DPOAE measured in the presence and absence of continuous contralateral stimulation. The DPOAE often declined in amplitude but in some cases we observed DPOAE enhancement. The changes in amplitude were as large as 9 dB. The influence of the contralateral noise changed over time, however, and the effects of contralateral tones were frequency-dependent. SOAE were suppressed in amplitude and shifted in frequency by contralateral broadband noise. Control measurements in animals after middle-ear muscle resection showed that these phenomena were not attributable to the acoustic middle-ear reflex. The finding of DPOAE enhancement is interesting, because a type of efferent fiber that suppressed its discharge rate during stimulation has been described in birds (Kaiser and Manley, 1994).

Coding of sound pressure level in the barn owl's auditory nerve

Rate-intensity functions, i.e., the relation between discharge rate and sound pressure level, were recorded from single auditory nerve fibers in the barn owl. Differences in sound pressure level between the owl's two ears are known to be an important cue in sound localization. One objective was therefore to quantify the discharge rates of auditory nerve fibers, as a basis for higher-order processing of sound pressure level. The second aim was to investigate the rate-intensity functions for cues to the underlying cochlear mechanisms, using a model developed in mammals. Rate-intensity functions at the most sensitive frequency mostly showed a well-defined breakpoint between an initial steep segment and a progressively flattening segment. This shape has, in mammals, been convincingly traced to a compressive nonlinearity in the cochlear mechanics, which in turn is a reflection of the cochlear amplifier enhancing low-level stimuli. The similarity of the rate-intensity functions of the barn owl is thus further evidence for a similar mechanism in birds. An interesting difference from mammalian data was that this compressive nonlinearity was not shared among fibers of similar characteristic frequency, suggesting a different mechanism with a more locally differentiated operation than in mammals. In all fibers, the steepest change in discharge rate with rising sound pressure level occurred within 10-20 dB of their respective thresholds. Because the range of neural thresholds at any one characteristic frequency is small in the owl, auditory nerve fibers were collectively most sensitive for changes in sound pressure level within approximately 30 dB of the best thresholds. Fibers most sensitive to high frequencies (>6-7 kHz) showed a smaller increase of rate above spontaneous discharge rate than did lower-frequency fibers.

Hearing impairment induces frequency-specific adjustments in auditory spatial tuning in the optic tectum of young owls

Bimodal, auditory-visual neurons in the optic tectum of the barn owl are sharply tuned for sound source location. The auditory receptive fields (RFs) of these neurons are restricted in space primarily as a consequence of their tuning for interaural time differences and interaural level differences across broad ranges of frequencies. In this study, we examined the extent to which frequency-specific features of early auditory experience shape the auditory spatial tuning of these neurons. We manipulated auditory experience by implanting in one ear canal an acoustic filtering device that altered the timing and level of sound reaching the eardrum in a frequency-dependent fashion. We assessed the auditory spatial tuning at individual tectal sites in normal owls and in owls raised with the filtering device. At each site, we measured a family of auditory RFs using broadband sound and narrowband sounds with different center frequencies both with and without the device in place. In normal owls, the narrowband RFs for a given site all included a common region of space that corresponded with the broadband RF and aligned with the site's visual RF. Acute insertion of the filtering device in normal owls shifted the locations of the narrowband RFs away from the visual RF, the magnitude and direction of the shifts depending on the frequency of the stimulus. In contrast, in owls that were raised wearing the device, narrowband and broadband RFs were aligned with visual RFs so long as the device was in the ear but not after it was removed, indicating that auditory spatial tuning had been adaptively altered by experience with the device. The frequency tuning of tectal neurons in device-reared owls was also altered from normal. The results demonstrate that experience during development adaptively modifies the representation of auditory space in the barn owl's optic tectum in a frequency-dependent manner.

Mechanisms of experience-dependent plasticity in the auditory localization pathway of the barn owl

Sound localization is a computational process that requires the central nervous system to measure various auditory cues and then associate particular cue values with appropriate locations in space. Behavioral experiments show that barn owls learn to associate values of cues with locations in space based on experience. The capacity for experience-driven changes in sound localization behavior is particularly great during a sensitive period that lasts until the approach of adulthood. Neurophysiological techniques have been used to determine underlying sites of plasticity in the auditory space-processing pathway. The external nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICX), where a map of auditory space is synthesized, is a major site of plasticity. Experience during the sensitive period can cause large-scale, adaptive changes in the tuning of ICX neurons for sound localization cues. Large-scale physiological changes are accompanied by anatomical remodeling of afferent axons to the ICX. Changes in the tuning of ICX neurons for cue values involve two stages: (1) the instructed acquisition of neuronal responses to novel cue values and (2) the elimination of responses to inappropriate cue values. Newly acquired neuronal responses depend differentially on NMDA receptor currents for their expression. A model is presented that can account for this adaptive plasticity in terms of plausible cellular mechanisms.

Neural bases of an auditory illusion and its elimination in owls

Humans and owls localize sounds by detecting the arrival time disparity between the ears. Both species determine the interaural time difference by finding the delay necessary to match the leading signal with the lagging one. This method produces ambiguity with periodic signals, because the two signals can be matched by delaying either one or the other. As predicted, owls localized periodic signals in illusory directions, whereas they always perceived the real source when signal bandwidth exceeded a certain value. This bandwidth also enabled higher-order auditory neurons to discriminate between real and illusory sources.

Perception and neuronal coding of subjective contours in the owl

Robust form perception and underlying neuronal mechanisms require generalized representation of object boundaries, independent of how they are defined. One visual ability essential for form perception is reconstruction of contours absent from the retinal image. Here we show that barn owls perceive subjective contours defined by grating gaps and phase-shifted abutting gratings. Moreover, single-neuron recordings from visual forebrain (visual Wulst) of awake, behaving birds revealed a high proportion of neurons signaling such subjective contours, independent of local stimulus attributes. These data suggest that the visual Wulst is important in contour-based form perception and exhibits a functional complexity analogous to mammalian extrastriate cortex.

Functional selection of adaptive auditory space map by GABAA-mediated inhibition

The external nucleus of the inferior colliculus in the barn owl contains an auditory map of space that is based on the tuning of neurons for interaural differences in the timing of sound. In juvenile owls, this region of the brain can acquire alternative maps of interaural time difference as a result of abnormal experience. It has been found that, in an external nucleus that is expressing a learned, abnormal map, the circuitry underlying the normal map still exists but is functionally inactivated by inhibition mediated by gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors. This inactivation results from disproportionately strong inhibition of specific input channels to the network. Thus, experience-driven changes in patterns of inhibition, as well as adjustments in patterns of excitation, can contribute critically to adaptive plasticity in the central nervous system.

Early visual experience shapes the representation of auditory space in the forebrain gaze fields of the barn owl

Auditory spatial information is processed in parallel forebrain and midbrain pathways. Sensory experience early in life has been shown to exert a powerful influence on the representation of auditory space in the midbrain space-processing pathway. The goal of this study was to determine whether early experience also shapes the representation of auditory space in the forebrain. Owls were raised wearing prismatic spectacles that shifted the visual field in the horizontal plane. This manipulation altered the relationship between interaural time differences (ITDs), the principal cue used for azimuthal localization, and locations of auditory stimuli in the visual field. Extracellular recordings were used to characterize ITD tuning in the auditory archistriatum (AAr), a subdivision of the forebrain gaze fields, in normal and prism-reared owls. Prism rearing altered the representation of ITD in the AAr. In prism-reared owls, unit tuning for ITD was shifted in the adaptive direction, according to the direction of the optical displacement imposed by the spectacles. Changes in ITD tuning involved the acquisition of unit responses to adaptive ITD values and, to a lesser extent, the elimination of responses to nonadaptive (previously normal) ITD values. Shifts in ITD tuning in the AAr were similar to shifts in ITD tuning observed in the optic tectum of the same owls. This experience-based adjustment of binaural tuning in the AAr helps to maintain mutual registry between the forebrain and midbrain representations of auditory space and may help to ensure consistent behavioral responses to auditory stimuli.

Energy metabolism and body temperature of barn owls fasting in the cold

Energetic adaptation to fasting in the cold has been investigated in a nocturnal raptor, the barn owl (Tyto alba), during winter. Metabolic rate and body temperature (Tb) were monitored in captive birds, (1) after acute exposure to different ambient temperatures (Ta), and (2) during a prolonged fast in the cold (4 degrees C), to take into account the three characteristic phases of body fuel utilization that occur during a long-term but reversible fast. In postabsorptive birds, metabolic rate in the thermoneutral zone was 4. 1+/-0.1 W kg-1 and increased linearly below a lower critical temperature of 23 degrees C. Metabolic rate was 70% above basal at +4 degrees C Ta. Wet thermal conductance was 0.22 W kg-1 degrees C-1. During fasting in the cold, the mass-specific resting metabolic rate decreased by 16% during the first day (phase I) and remained constant thereafter. The amplitude of the daily rhythm in Tb was only moderately increased during phase II, with a slight lowering (0. 6 degrees C) in minimal diurnal Tb, but rose markedly in phase III with a larger drop (1.4 degrees C) in minimal diurnal Tb. Refeeding the birds ended phase III and reversed the observed changes. These results indicate that diurnal hypothermia may be used in long-term fasting barn owls and could be triggered by a threshold of body lipid depletion, according to the shift from lipid to protein fuel metabolism occurring at the phase II/phase III transition. The high cost of regulatory thermogenesis and the limited use of hypothermia during fasting may contribute to the high mortality of barn owls during winter.

Evolution of time coding systems

The auditory and electrosensory systems contain circuits that are specialized for the encoding and processing of microsecond time differences. Analysis of these circuits in two specialists, weakly electric fish and barn owls, has uncovered common design principles and illuminated some aspects of their evolution.

Heteroxenous coccidia increase the predation risk of parasitized rodents

We have investigated the influence of heteroxenous coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriorina) on the predation risk of intermediate hosts. Voles infected with Frenkelia spp. were found more frequently in buzzards' (Buteo buteo) prey than among snap-trapped rodents. To eliminate the possibility of traps selecting for uninfected rodents, a laboratory experiment was performed. Mice experimentally infected with Sarcocystis dispersa seemed to be more likely caught by the final host, the long-eared owl (Asio otus); this result was confirmed by a mathematical model. Field data confirmed the adaptive value of parasite-induced changes. The increase of predation is directed towards the specific final host only or is non-specific. In the populations studied the probability of predation of parasitized individuals by the specific predator was increased.

Simulation of ILD sensitive neurons in the inferior colliculus of the barn owl

The barn owl (Tyto alba) uses interaural level difference (ILD) as a cue for the localization of sound. The first site of binaural convergence in the pathway that processes ILD is the ventral lateral lemniscus pars posterior (VLVp). Neurons in VLVp receive excitatory input from the contralateral nucleus angularis, and inhibitory input from the contralateral VLVp. Within the lateral shell of the inferior colliculus are ILD sensitive neurons that show maximum spike rate at a specific ILD value, with response falling off sharply on each side. Adolphs has developed a model of such lateral shell neurons based on anatomic and physiological data. In his model, lateral shell neurons receive inhibitory input from VLVp on both sides, and this inhibition, applied against a constant excitatory input, produces the observed two-sided response curves. We simulated, in Matlab 4, Adolphs' model, and obtained supporting results. Our simulation suggests that VLVp provides a repository of simple ILD filters from which higher centers construct more complex filters, including the single-peaked curves observed by Adolphs. The VLVp filters are organized along the inhibitory gradient, with broad filters ventral, sharp filters dorsal.
