Acute respiratory distress in the dog associated with paraquat poisoning

An acute respiratory distress syndrome in 10 adult dogs was usually preceded by vomiting, anorexia and lethargy followed, after a short interval, by dyspnoea. The dyspnoea became increasingly severe, despite oxygen therapy, and cyanotic respiratory failure ensued. All 10 dogs died or were killed after illnesses lasting between one and eight days. Necropsies revealed pulmonary congestion, oedema, collapse and haemorrhage with loss of alveolar epithelial cells. Early alveolar fibrosis was also found. Paraquat was identified in post mortem samples from four of the 10 dogs.

Experimental infection of rabbits with the virus of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis

Adult and newborn rabbits were infected with the LA strain of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus. Adult rabbits developed only mild, self-limiting conjunctivitis, but had microscopic inflammatory foci in the liver and adrenal glands. Newborn rabbits developed a severe, sometimes fatal, generalized infection with focal and diffuse necrosis of the liver and adrenal glands.

Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis in the orang-utan (Pongo pygmaeus)

A 19-years-old male Orang-Utan had a brief illness of two weeks with marked dyspnoea. Necropsy revealed diffuse bilateral pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis. This is the first account of this pathoanatomical entity in lower primates.

Epidermoid cyst of the brain in the horse

An aged Connemara mare had a neurological illness lasting 3 weeks and characterised by episodes of dullness, head-pressing, staggering gait and hyperexcitability. The signs recurred at intervals of 3 to 4 days, with intervening periods of apparent normality. Post-mortem examination revealed an epidermoid cyst on the dorsal surface of the occipital lobe of the left cerebral hemisphere. The cyst was lined by stratified squamous epithelium and contained desquamated keratinised material and blood. The lesion is considered to be a congenital malformation which enlarges and produces space-occupying signs.

Renal carcinoma in the dog

Thirty-three cases of canine renal carcinoma reported between 1907 and 1972 are reviewed, and clinical and pathological features of nine other cases seen in Bristol between 1966 and 1975 are described. Clinical features frequently include nonspecific signs of anorexia and weight loss. The age range of affected dogs varies from 3 to 15 years, with a mean of 7.1 years. Male dogs appear to be affected more frequently than females, but there is no breed predilection. The clinical behaviour of canine renal carcinoma is variable, with 4 years the longest survival time after nephrectomy. The primary tumours characteristically are large and unilateral and occupy most of one pole of a kidney. Metastatic spread can involve a wide range of organs, the commonest being lymph nodes and lung. Solid, tubular and papillary patterns are common. Clear cell carcinoma is uncommon.

Spongy degeneration of the central nervous system in kittens

The paper describes the clinical and morphological features of a congenital neurological disease affecting two in-bred litter-mate kittens. The principal neurological features were ataxia and dysmetria. In one of the kittens light microscopy revealed widespread vacuolation of white and grey matter of the brain and spinal cord. Electron microscopy revealved intra-myelinic vacuolation and some expansion of the extracellular space. Neuronal, axonal and glial changes were not seen, nor was there evidence of myelin breakdown. The entity is compared with congenital brain oedema of calves and spongy degeneration of the CNS in man.

Intrahepatic cholestasis in a dog: a clinicopathological study

The paper describes a case of jaundice in a three-year-old bassett hound. The illness was accompanied by hyperbilirubinaemia and raised serum levels of alkaline phosphatase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase, indicating the presence of both biliary obstruction and hepatocellular damage. Examination of liver biopsies on two occasions showed intrahepatic cholestasis and mild inflammatory change. The dog was treated with corticosteroid. The jaundice regressed after three months, hepatic functions returned to normal and the dog recovered. The cause of the jaundice was not determined.

[The surgical treatment of intra-nasal tumours in the dog]

This paper describes the surgical treatment of fourteen dogs with intranasal neoplasms. Affected dogs were from ten breeds and their average age was eight years. Clinical signs included unilateral nasal discharge epistaxis and sneezing; later there was deformity of the face and/or palate. Diagnosis of intra-nasal tumour was made by radiological examination and by exploratory rhinotomy. Surgical excision of the tumour mass was attempted in all cases. Histological examination of resected nasal tissue revealed five carcinomas, six sarcomas and three examples of benign polypoid hyperplasia of the nasal mucosa. The average post-operative survival time was 11 months with a range from two weeks to four years.

Testicular torsion in the dog: a review of 13 cases

The clinical and pathological features of testicular torsion in 13 dogs are reviewed. The affected gonads were intra-abdominal in 11 animals, and inguinal and scrotal respectively in two others. In most cases, the torsion appeared to result from neoplastic enlargement of the testis.

Neuroblastoma in the dog

Two malignant canine tumours of peripheral neuronal tissue are described. A mediastinal neuroblastoma was found in a 15-mth-old Boston Terrier with dyspnoea. The tumour compressed adjacent lung and invaded the cervical spinal cord. A retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma was found in a 2-yr-old Labrador with posterior ataxia and atrophy of the muscles of the hind legs. This tumour surrounded adjacent adjacent soft tissues and invaded the overlying vertebrae.
