Abstract
Rainbow trout fry syndrome (RTFS) is a septicaemic infection of young rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss occurring at low temperatures and responsible for severe economic losses in European fish farming. The causative agent, Flavobacterium psychrophilum, is a gliding bacterium, and difficulties in culturing it have long been an impediment to investigations on pathogenesis and immunity. Successful attempts at experimentally inducing the disease have been reported, but no experimental model resulting in well-controlled and quantitatively reproducible effects has been described. Recent improvements in F. psychrophilum cultivation made it possible to produce bacterial suspensions with nearly constant viability and to complete challenge injections in rainbow trout fingerlings, using accurately adjusted infective doses. Parenteral injection resulted in significant mortality, which was higher when administered intramuscularly (IM) than intraperitoneally (IP). Lethal doses 50 % lower than 10(3) colony forming units were consistently obtained in trout weighing 3 to 5 g, and the regular shape of the cumulative mortality curves appeared to lend itself to quantitative analyses. Bath experiments produced milder effects, although mortality ranging between 45 and 60 % was obtained in 6 g trout when skin lesions or stressors were induced along with bacterial exposure. Temperature, salinity and the process of preserving isolates (at least over short periods of time) did not seem to be associated with the severity of infection. Nevertheless, infection trials performed at 2 different locations differing both in water quality and in the system of fish maintenance resulted in different mortalities. These findings notwithstanding, the proposed IM model appears easy to apply under standardized experimental conditions and should contribute to effective advances in the study of the disease.

Abstract
Previous neuroimaging studies have identified a large network of cortical areas involved in semantic processing in the human brain, which includes left occipito-temporal and inferofrontal areas. Most studies, however, investigated exclusively the associative/functional semantic knowledge by using mainly words and/or language related tasks, and this factor may have contributed to the large left hemisphere superiority found in semantic processing and to the controversial involvement of left prefrontal structures. The present study investigates the neural basis of visual objects knowledge, accessed exclusively through pictorial information. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was assessed using positron emission tomography (PET) during 3 conditions in right-handed normal volunteers: resting with eyes closed, retrieval of semantic information related to visual properties of objects (real size), and visual categorization based on physical properties of the image. Confirming previous experiments and neuropsychological findings, most activations were found in left occipito-temporal areas during retrieval of visual semantic knowledge. The absence of any activation in the left prefrontal inferior cortex for visual semantic processing confirms recent observations which suggest that this region would not be involved in retrieval of visual semantic knowledge from living entities. Rather, such knowledge about visual properties of objects, situated closely to cortical regions mediating perception of the visual attributes, can be retrieved directly from these regions when visual images are used as entry level stimuli.

Abstract
Positron emission tomography (PET) was used to investigate the functional anatomy of the foveal fixation system in 10 subjects scanned under three different conditions: at rest (REST), during the fixation of a central point (FIX), and while fixating the same foveal target during the presentation of peripheral visual distractors (DIS). Compared with the REST condition, both FIX and DIS tasks activated a common set of cortical areas. First, in addition to the involvement of the occipital visual cortex, both the frontal eye field (FEF) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) were bilaterally activated. Right frontal activation was also found in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the inferior part of the precentral gyrus, and the inferior frontal gyrus. These results suggest that both FEF and IPS may constitute the main cortical regions subserving bilaterally the foveal fixation system in humans. The remaining right frontal activations may be considered as part of the anterior attentional network, supporting a role for the right frontal lobe in the allocation of the attentional mechanisms. Compared with the FIX condition, the DIS task also revealed the perceptual and cognitive processes related to the presence of peripheral visual distractors during foveal fixation. In addition to a bilateral activation of the V5/MT motion-sensitive area, a right FEF-IPS network was activated which may correspond to the engagement of the visuospatial attention. Finally, normalized regional cerebral blood flow (NrCBF) decreases were also observed during both DIS and FIX condition performance. Such NrCBF decreases were centered in the superior and middle temporal gyri, the prefrontal cortex, and the precuneus and the posterior retrosplenial part of the cingulate gyrus.

Abstract
Brain imaging studies in man and single cell recordings in monkey have suggested that medial supplementary motor areas (SMA) and lateral pre-motor areas (PMA) are functionally dissociated concerning their involvement in internally driven and externally cued movements. This dichotomy, however, seems to be relative rather than absolute. Here, we searched for further evidence of relative differences and aimed to determine by what aspect of brain activity (duration, strength, or both) these might be accounted for. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while healthy, right-handed subjects selected one of three possible right hand digit movements based either on 'internal' choice or 'external' cues. The results obtained from ERP mapping suggest that movement selection evokes the same electrical brain activity patterns in terms of surface potential configurations in the same order and at the same strength independent of the selection mode. These identical configurations, however, differed in their duration. Combined with the results of a distributed source localization procedure, our data are suggestive of longer lasting activity in SMA during the 'internal' and longer lasting activity in PMA during the 'external' condition. Our results confirm previous findings in showing that SMA and PMA are distinctively involved in the two tasks and that this functional dichotomy is relative rather than absolute but indicate that such a dissociation can result from differences in duration rather than pure strength of activation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our purpose was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of atorvastatin, a potent cholesterol- and triglyceride-lowering agent, in peritoneal dialysis patients with dyslipidaemia. METHODS Peritoneal dialysis patients with hypercholesterolaemia were treated for 4 months with atorvastatin at a starting dose of 10 mg. The dose could be increased to 20 or 40 mg in order to achieve the following targets: plasma LDL-cholesterol of 130 mg/dl for primary prevention of coronary heart disease, plasma LDL cholesterol of 100 mg/dl for secondary prevention, and plasma triglycerides of 200 mg/dl. Plasma lipid profile and liver and muscle enzyme levels were assessed at baseline and then monthly during treatment. RESULTS Thirty-one patients with hypercholesterolaemia were included (16 males and 15 females; mean age 57+/-16 years; mean duration of peritoneal dialysis 27+/-17 months). Nineteen of the patients also had hypertriglyceridaemia and seven had diabetes. Twenty patients had no coronary history (primary prevention), whereas nine had experienced a coronary event (secondary prevention). In the primary and the secondary prevention patients, mean LDL-cholesterol levels (mg/dl) decreased significantly by 42 and 46% from 204+/-23 to 119+/-27 (P<0. 001) and 198+/-37 to 104+/-21 (P<0.001), and mean triglyceride levels (mg/dl) decreased by 37 and 26% from 289+/-132 to 186+/-92 (P<0.001) and 201+/-62 to 150+/-54 (P<0.001 respectively). Nineteen primary prevention and seven secondary prevention patients achieved the LDL-cholesterol target. The triglyceride target was achieved by 15 of the 19 hypertriglyceridaemic patients. Two patients stopped treatment (one because of gastrointestinal disturbances, the other because of an allergic skin reaction). After 4 months, there were no changes in enzyme levels. CONCLUSION Atorvastatin is an effective and safe lipid-lowering agent for peritoneal dialysis patients with mixed dyslipidaemia.

Abstract
To determine the effects of feeding or starvation on resource allocation to body components during the reproductive cycle of Sphaerechinus granularis, sea urchins were placed in laboratory tanks and either fed ad libitum or starved during two different periods of their biological cycle, i.e. the mature stage and the recovery stage. The urchin growth was monitored over the whole experimental period, the gonad, gut, lantern indices and organic matter levels of different organs were determined at the end of the experiment. During the mature stage sea urchins in good nutritional conditions did not increase in size, but allotted energy to gonad production and stored reserves in body wall. Limiting food stopped the gonadal growth without complete regression. During the recovery period food allowed somatic growth, i.e. test growth and the storage of reserves in gonad somatic cells. This somatic production did not occur under food-limited conditions and the resources allotted for survival and maintenance were taken from different body components.

Abstract
The polyphenols present in green tea or red wine comprise both regular flavon(ol)s and proanthocyanidins, i.e., derivatives of flavan-3-ols, whose distinct antioxidative potential is of great importance for explaining the beneficial effects of these nutrient beverages. Using EPR spectroscopy, we investigated radical structures obtained after oxidation of the parent compounds either by horseradish peroxidase/hydrogen peroxide or after autoxidation in moderately alkaline solutions. Both proanthocyanidins (monomers of condensed tannins, e.g., (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (-)-epicatechin gallate, (-)-epigallocatechin, (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, Pycnogenol) and gallate esters (hydrolyzable tannins, e.g., propylgallate, beta-glucogallin, pentagalloyl glucose and tannic acid) yielded predominantly semiquinone structures derived from the parent catechol or pyrogallol moieties. Evidence for a time-dependent oligomerization was obtained for (-)-epigallocatechin gallate, supporting our hypothesis that o-quinones formed from the initial semiquinone disproportionation are prone to nucleophilic addition reactions. Such phenolic coupling reactions would retain the numbers of reactive catechol/pyrogallol structures and thus the antioxidative potential. We therefore propose that proanthocyanidins are superior antioxidants as compared to flavon(ol)s proper, whose quinones are more likely to redox-cycle and act as prooxidants.

Abstract
This paper deals with unsupervised Bayesian classification of multidimensional data. We propose an extension of a previous method of generalized mixture estimation to the correlated sensors case. The method proposed is valid in the independent data case, as well as in the hidden Markov chain or field model case, with known applications in signal processing, particularly speech or image processing. The efficiency of the method proposed is shown via some simulations concerning hidden Markov fields, with application to unsupervised image segmentation.

Abstract
While the prebiotic effects of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), short-chain polymers of fructose, have been thoroughly described after 2-3 wk of ingestion, effects after intake for several months are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that these effects would differ after ingestion for short and long periods in rats. Rats were fed a basal low-fiber diet (Basal) or the same diet containing 9 g/100 g of FOS for 2, 8 or 27 wk, and cecal contents were collected at the end of each time period. Cecal short-chain fatty acid concentration was higher in rats fed FOS than in those fed Basal, and this effect persisted over time: 83.8 +/- 4.1 vs. 62.4 +/- 6.5 micromol/g at 2 wk and 103.5 +/- 5.8 vs. 73.2 +/- 7.4 micromol/g at 27 wk (P < 0.05). The molar butyrate ratio was higher in rats fed FOS regardless of the time period (14.8 +/- 0.6% vs. 6.7 +/- 1.1% at 27 wk, P < 0.05). Lactate concentration in rats fed FOS was elevated after 2 wk and then decreased: 63.5 +/- 21.6 micromol/g at 2 wk vs. 8.8 +/- 3.3 micromol/g at 8 wk (P < 0.05). After 2 wk, FOS increased the concentrations of total lactic acid-producing bacteria, and Lactobacillus sp. (P < 0.05), without modifying total anaerobes. However, most of these effects were abolished after 8 and 27 wk of FOS consumption. In the long term, the FOS-induced increase in intestinal lactic acid-producing bacteria was lost, but the butyrogenic properties of FOS were maintained.

Abstract
Reactivities of several proanthocyanidins (monomers of condensed tannins) and gallate esters (representing hydrolyzable tannins) with hydroxyl radicals, azide radicals, and superoxide anions were investigated using pulse radiolysis combined with kinetic spectroscopy. We determined the scavenging rate constants and the decay kinetics of the aroxyl radicals both at the wavelength of the semiquinone absorption (275 nm) and the absorption band of the gallate ester ketyl radical (400-420 nm). For most compounds second-order decay kinetics were observed, which reflect disproportionation of the semiquinones. In the case of the oligomeric hydrolysable tannins, pentagalloyl glucose and tannic acid, the decay kinetics were more complex involving sequential first-order and second-order reactions, which could only be resolved by kinetic modeling. A correlation of the reaction rates with hydroxyl radicals (k*OH) with the number of adjacent aromatic hydroxyl groups (i.e., representing catechol and/or pyrogallol structures) was obtained for both condensed and hydrolyzable tannins. Similar correlation for the reactions with azide radicals and superoxide anions are less obvious, but exist as well. We consider proanthocyanidins superior radical scavenging agents as compared with the monomeric flavonols and flavones and propose that these substances rather than the flavonoids proper represent the antioxidative principle in red wine and green tea.

Abstract
Adult Wistar male rats were given dexamethasone in their drinking water. Food-hoarding behavior was measured repeatedly, and plotted against the animals' body weights. Body weight set point was estimated as the intersection of the regression line of hoarding with the X axis, i.e. as the threshold at which hoarding appears when body weight drops, and disappears when body weight returns to its initial value. Body weight set point was obtained before and during dexamethasone treatment. Control rats underwent the same sequence without dexamethasone in their drinking water. The hoarding threshold was raised when rats ingested low doses of dexamethasone, and was lowered when they ingested high doses. These results are discussed in the light of CRH as the main signal for the body weight set point.

Abstract
Some data suggest that the colonic microflora may adapt to produce more butyrate if given time and the proper substrate. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the effect of prolonged feeding of resistant potato starch on butyrate production. Rats were fed on either a low-fibre diet (basal) or the same diet supplemented with 90 g resistant potato starch/kg (PoS) for 0.5, 2 and 6 months. Short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations were determined in caecal and colonic contents at the end of each ingestion period. Total SCFA concentration increased over time throughout the caecocolonic tract with PoS, but was not modified with the basal diet. While propionate concentration was unchanged, butyrate concentration was highly increased by PoS at each time period in both the caecum and colon. Moreover, the butyrogenic effect of PoS increased over time, and the amount of butyrate was increased 6-fold in the caecum and proximal colon and 3-fold in the distal colon after 6 months compared with 0.5 months. Accordingly, the ratio butyrate:- total SCFA increased over time throughout the caecocolonic tract (12.6 (SE 2.8) v. 28 (SE 1.8)% in the caecum, 10.5 (SE 1.4) v. 26.8 (SE 0.9)% in the proximal colon, and 7.3 (SE 2.4) v. 23.9 (SE 2.7)% in the distal colon at 0.5 v. 6 months respectively), while the proportion of acetate decreased. Neither the proportion nor the concentration of butyrate was modified over time with the basal diet. Butyrate production was thus promoted by long-term ingestion of PoS, from the caecum towards the distal colon, which suggests that a slow adaptive process occurs within the digestive tract in response to a chronic load of indigestible carbohydrates.

Abstract
Opposite effects of gentle handling on body temperature and body weight in rats. PHhe aim of this study was to measure the body weight set point when rats are being handled gently and thus experience emotional rise in body temperature. Wistar male rats were used in this experiment, and each rat was its own control. Body weight set point was estimated from the rat's food hoarding behavior. The set point is the intersection of the regression line for hoarding with the X axis. During hoarding sessions the experimenter handled the rat and took its colonic temperature six to eight times, an action sufficient to arouse emotional fever. On alternate days the rats were not handled. Thus, body weight set point was obtained for each rat without handling and with handling. In sessions with handling, rats raised their body temperature, ate less, and defecated more than in control sessions. When handled, the body weight set point declined from 388 +/- 44 g to 366 +/- 47 g (p = 0.048, t = 2,39). The decline in the set point induced by gentle handling is believed to result from an elevation of the hypothalamic CRH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the putative involvement of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) alleles in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). METHODS This study of French Caucasians included 171 unrelated patients with SLE, 88 unrelated patients with primary APS, and 193 ethnically matched healthy controls. The SLE group comprised 89 patients with sporadic SLE and 82 patients with familial SLE. Patients' and controls' DNA were genotyped for the various alleles of a polymorphic CA dinucleotide repeat located within the promoter region of PARP. RESULTS No statistically significant difference was observed for the distribution of PARP alleles between the healthy control group and each patient group or the pooled SLE patient group. CONCLUSION The study findings strongly suggest that these alleles do not influence susceptibility to SLE or primary APS in French Caucasians.

The GABA(B) receptor variants, characterized by the constituents GBR1a and GBR1b, were therefore analyzed with regard to their subunit composition as well as their regional and subcellular distribution in situ. The analysis was based on the use of antisera recognizing selectively GBR1a, GBR1b, and GBR2. Following their solubilization, GBR1a and GBR1b were both found by immunoprecipitation to occur as heterodimers associated with GBR2. Furthermore, monomers of GBR1a, GBR1b, or GBR2 were not detectable, suggesting that practically all GABA(B) receptors are heterodimers in situ. Finally, there was no evidence for an association of GBR1a with GBR1b indicating that these two constituents represent two different receptor populations. A size determination of solubilized GABA(B) receptors by sucrose density centrifugation revealed two distinct peaks of which one corresponded to dimeric receptors, and the higher molecular weight peak pointed to the presence of yet unknown receptor-associated proteins. The distribution and relative abundance of GBR2 immunoreactivity corresponded in all brain regions to that of the sum of GBR1a and GBR1b, supporting the view that most if not all GBR1 proteins are associated with GBR2. However, GBR1a was present preferentially at postsynaptic densities, whereas GBR1b may be mainly attributed to presynaptic or extrasynaptic sites. Thus, GBR1a and GBR1b are both associated with GBR2 to form heterodimers at mainly different subcellular locations where they are expected to subserve different functions.

Abstract
Simple visuomanual reaction time tasks require interhemispheric communication when stimuli are presented in the hemifield opposite the responding hand. Although confirmed in many studies, it is still a matter of debate when, at what functional level and at what site this interhemispheric transfer takes place. To address these questions, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) in 12 healthy subjects performing such a task and analyzed the data using techniques based on topographic ERP map characteristics. A method which has proved useful for associating ERP map configurations of different time periods with functional states of the brain was supplemented by a source localization procedure. The results suggest that transfer occurs late in time, on a functional motor level and at frontal sites, at least for left-to-right interhemispheric direction of transfer.

Abstract
The high computational cost of data processing in volume PET imaging is still hindering the routine application of this successful technique, especially in the case of dynamic studies. This paper describes two new algorithms based on an exact rebinning equation, which can be applied to accelerate the processing of three-dimensional (3-D) PET data. The first algorithm, FOREPROJ, is a fast-forward projection algorithm that allows calculation of the 3-D attenuation correction factors (ACF's) directly from a two-dimensional (2-D) transmission scan, without first reconstructing the attenuation map and then performing a 3-D forward projection. The use of FOREPROJ speeds up the estimation of the 3-D ACF's by more than a factor five. The second algorithm, FOREX, is a rebinning algorithm that is also more than five times faster, compared to the standard reprojection algorithm (3DRP) and does not suffer from the image distortions generated by the even faster approximate Fourier rebinning (FORE) method at large axial apertures. However, FOREX is probably not required by most existing scanners, as the axial apertures are not large enough to show improvements over FORE with clinical data. Both algorithms have been implemented and applied to data simulated for a scanner with a large axial aperture (30 degrees), and also to data acquired with the ECAT HR and the ECAT HR+ scanners. Results demonstrate the excellent accuracy achieved by these algorithms and the important speedup when the sinogram sizes are powers of two.

Abstract
The redox components of the cytochrome bc1 complex from the acidophilic chemolithotrophic organism Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were investigated by potentiometric and spectroscopic techniques. Optical redox titrations demonstrated the presence of two b-type hemes with differing redox midpoint potentials at pH 7.4 (-169 and + 20 mV for bL and bH, respectively). At pH 3.5, by contrast, both hemes appeared to titrate at about +20 mV. Antimycin A, 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide, and stigmatellin induced distinguishable shifts of the b hemes' alpha-bands, providing evidence for the binding of antimycin A and 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide near heme bH (located on the cytosolic side of the membrane) and of stigmatellin near heme bL (located on the periplasmic side of the membrane). The inhibitors stigmatellin, 5-(n-undecyl)-6-hydroxy-4,7-dioxobenzothiazole, and 2, 5-dibromo-3-methyl-6-isopropyl-p-benzoquinone affected the EPR spectrum of the Rieske iron-sulfur center in a way that differs from what has been observed for cytochrome bc1 or b6f complexes. The results obtained demonstrate that the T. ferrooxidans complex, although showing most of the features characteristic for bc1 complexes, contains unique properties that are most probably related to the chemolithotrophicity and/or acidophilicity of its parent organism. A speculative model for reverse electron transfer through the T. ferrooxidans complex is proposed.

Abstract
Whole-body fluorine-18 fluoro-2-d-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is widely used in clinical centres for diagnosis, staging and therapy monitoring in oncology. Images are usually not corrected for attenuation since filtered backprojection (FBP) reconstruction methods require a 10 to 15-min transmission scan per bed position on most current PET devices equipped with germanium-68 rod transmission sources. Such an acquisition protocol would increase the total scanning time beyond acceptable limits. The aim of this work is to validate the use of iterative reconstruction methods, on both transmission and emission scans, in order to obtain a fully corrected whole-body study within a reasonable scanning time of 60 min. Five minute emission and 3-min transmission scans are acquired at each of the seven bed positions. The transmission data are reconstructed with OSEM (ordered subsets expectation maximization) and the last iteration is reprojected to obtain consistent attenuation correction factors (ACFs). The emission image is then also reconstructed with OSEM, using the emission scan corrected for normalization, scatter and decay together with the set of consistent ACFs as inputs. The total processing time is about 35 min, which is acceptable in a clinical environment. The image quality, readability and accuracy of uptake quantification were assessed in 38 patients scanned for various malignancies. The sensitivity for tumour detection was the same for the non-attenuation-corrected (NAC-FBP) and the attenuation-corrected (AC-OSEM) images. The AC-OSEM images were less noisy and easier to interpret. The interobserver reproducibility was significantly increased when compared with non-corrected images (96.1% vs 81.1%, P<0.01). Standardized uptake values (SUVs) measured on images reconstructed with OSEM (AC-OSEM) and filtered backprojection (AC-FBP) were similar in all body regions except in the pelvic area, where SUVs were higher on AC-FBP images (mean increase 7.74%, P<0. 01). Our results show that, when statistical reconstruction is applied to both transmission and emission data, high quality quantitative whole-body images are obtained within a reasonable scanning (60 min) and processing time, making it applicable in clinical practice.

Abstract
Prognostic studies of primary cutaneous lymphomas (PCL) other than mycosis fungoides (MF) and the Sézary syndrome (SS; non-MF/SS PCL) have been mainly performed on subgroups or on small numbers of patients by using univariate analyses. Our aim was to identify independent prognostic factors in a large series of patients with non-MF/SS PCL. We evaluated 158 patients who were registered in the French Study Group on Cutaneous Lymphomas database from January 1, 1986 to March 1, 1997. Variables analyzed for prognostic value were: age; sex; type of clinical lesions; maximum diameter, location, and number of skin lesions; cutaneous distribution (ie, local, regional, or generalized); prognostic group according to the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) classification for PCL; B- or T-cell phenotype; serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) level; and B symptoms. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using a model of relative survival. Forty-nine patients (31%) died. The median relative survival time was 81 months. In univariate analysis, EORTC prognostic group, serum LDH level, B symptoms, and variables related to tumor extension (ie, distribution, maximum diameter, and number of skin lesions) were significantly associated with survival. When these variables were considered together in a multivariate analysis, EORTC prognostic group and distribution of skin lesions remained statistically significant, independent prognostic factors. This study confirms the good predictive value of the EORTC classification for PCL and shows that the distribution of skin lesions at initial evaluation is an important prognostic indicator.

Abstract
Although the fish pathogen Flavobacterium psychrophilum is a major source of concern in salmonid hatcheries, few studies have been conducted on its pathogenicity. Difficulties are often experienced when trying to control or quantify standard procedures for in vitro culture of the bacterium. Plate enumeration and counting chamber enumeration combined with epifluorescent microscopy with fluorescent dyes determined that no more than 25% of the bacterial cells present in the cultures were able to produce colonies on agar media. This was strongly dependent upon different medium components. Tryptone-enriched Anacker and Ordal medium proved more suitable than tryptone-yeast extract-salts with skimmed milk. Adding horse serum and trace elements in controlled proportions offered the most reproducible results. Viable but nonculturable forms were apparently not responsible for the difficulties in production of F. psychrophilum, but the cells were highly susceptible to osmotic conditions. Improvements in the media and careful handling of the bacteria in isotonic suspension media resulted in predictable production of viable bacteria and allowed an absorbance/colony-forming-units relation curve to be established.

Abstract
One case of superficial femoral aneurysm treated percutaneously by endovascular stent graft (Passager Boston) is reported. The initial radiographic evaluation included arteriography and color doppler sonography which enable analysis of the flow path, the extent of the wall thrombus, the choice of stended graft size. The procedure of implantation was technically trouble free. The post-procedure 3D CT and arteriography demonstrated occlusion of the aneurysm and resaturation of normal flow path. The six and twelve month check confirmed the stability of the results locally and the integrity of run off vessels. In weakened and specially elderly patient percutaneous treatment of superficial femoral artery aneurysm can be carried out easily. The contribution of 3D CT is essential in follow up to ensure an optimal result and to detect any complication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) has been increasingly used in recent years. Our purpose was to investigate whether the good preservation of residual renal function (RRF) that has been reported in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is also observed in APD. METHODS RRF was determined and compared prospectively over 1 year in two groups of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients: 18 consecutive new patients starting on APD (12 continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) patients and six nightly intermittent peritoneal dialysis (NIPD) patients) and 18 selected patients who had started on CAPD at the same time and were matched for baseline characteristics. RRF was assessed on normalized creatinine clearance (ml/min/1.73 m2) measured before the start of PD, at 6 months, and at 1 year. Wilcoxon's rank sum test was used to compare differences between the two groups. RESULTS Creatinine clearance (ClCr) was 6.1 ml/min in the APD group and 6 ml/min in the CAPD group at the start of PD. The monthly rate of ClCr decrease was significantly higher in the APD group: -0.28 ml/min vs -0.1 ml/min (P = 0.04) at 6 months and -0.26 ml/min vs -0.13 ml/min (P = 0.005) at 1 year. RRF decreased at the same rate in patients treated with NIPD or CCPD. The daily instilled volume of 3.86% glucose dialysis solution (l/day) was higher in APD patients than in CAPD patients: 2.5 vs 0 at 6 months and 1 year but there was no significant difference in ultrafiltration rate (l/day) between APD and CAPD patients at these timepoints: 0.53 vs 0.6 and 0.88 vs 0.7 respectively. There was no difference between the two groups in body weight and blood pressure, which remained stable in both groups throughout the study period. CONCLUSIONS RRF declined rapidly in APD patients whereas it was well preserved in CAPD patients. This may be explained by the less stable fluid and osmotic load together with the intermittent nature of APD and the larger use of hypertonic dialysate. RRF should be closely monitored in APD patients in order to adjust PD prescriptions and maintain adequacy.
