Abstract
Several 2-(substituted alkoxy/hydrazinocarbonyl acetanilidothio)benzoxazoles/benzothiazoles were synthesized and characterized by their sharp melting points, elemental analyses, and IR spectra. All thiobenzoxazoles/benzothiazoles possessed low anticonvulsant activity, which was reflected by the 10-40% protection afforded by these compounds against pentylenetetrazol-induced convulsions. All thiobenzoxazoles/benzothiazoles inhibited selectively the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)-dependent oxidation of pyruvate, DL-isocitrate, and alpha-ketoglutarate by rat brain homogenates. NAD-independent oxidation of succinate remained unaltered. All 2-(substituted hydrazinocarbonyl acetanilidothio)benzoxazoles/benzothiazoles inhibited monoamine oxidase activity of rat brain homogenates. Greater monoamine oxidase inhibition was observed with thiobenzothiazoles than with the corresponding thiobenzoxazoles/benzothiazoles was found to be unrelated with their ability to inhibit cellular respiratory and monoamine oxidase activities of rat brain homogenates.

Abstract
To study the effect of ethanol on glucose tolerance test, a series of experiments were performed on Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 250 g. After 18-hr fast, each rat was given, at random, the following test substances (one test substance at a time) intragastrically in a volume of 0.5 ml/100 g body weight: saline; glucose 0.75 g/kg (3 kcal); ethanol 0.4 g/kg (3 kcal); and ethanol with glucose. Saline or ethanol alone produced no significant changes in blood glucose or plasma insulin concentrations. Addition of ethanol to glucose load resulted in glucose intolerance as well as a lower and sluggish insulin response when compared to these with glucose load alone. The results suggest that ethanol per se has no effect on blood glucose or plasma insulin. However, when given together with glucose load, ethanol produces glucose intolerance as well as inhibition of glucose mediated insulin response.

Abstract
Molecular structural characteristics of thyroid hormones which influence binding to the erythrocyte membranes were investigated by competitive binding experiments. The ability of thyroid hormone analogs to displace 131 I-L-thyroxine and 131 I-L-triiodothyronine from the membranes was considered evidence of their competitive binding. The diphenyl ether linkage (thyronine) was essential as compounds with a single aromatic ring were weakly competitive. The presence of three iodine atoms at 3, 5 and 3' positions on thyronine was optimal for maximal competitive binding. There was weak competitive binding of analogs if chlorine or bromine was substituted for iodine. The alanine side chain was required for optimal binding as N-acetyl-l-thyroxine and various deaminated analogs were poor competitors compared to T4 and T3. L-isomers of T4 and T3 showed greater competitive binding to erythrocyte membranes than the corresponding d-isomers.

Abstract
In the present study, acid phosphatase activity has been histochemically localized in the medulla oblongata (facialis part) of Streptopelia senegalensis and Uroloncha malabarica. It was noticed that the enzyme is present particularly in the motor nuclei and lysosomes of neuroglial cells of the medulla oblongata. However, enzymatic deposition appears to be somewhat more vigorous in S. senegalensis than in U. malabarica, thereby indicating their respective metabolic turnover and neuronal excitability. Simultaneously, the functional significance has been discussed in the light of differential localization.

Abstract
Ten patients with primary hypothyroidism and ophthalmopathy are reported. None of the patients had previously received any form of therapy for thyrotoxicosis. In some patients hypothyroidism and exophthalmos presented simultaneously, but in others one clinical feature preceded the other by many years. Elevated titres of thyroid antibodies were found in 7 of the 10 patients and LATS was detected in 1 of the 10 patients. Increased 35S-sulphate uptake by the mouse Harderian gland technique occurred with serum from 1 of the 7 patients tested.

Abstract
Ten 2-(4-arylthiosemicarbazidocarbonylthio)benzthiazoles were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for their monoamine oxidase inhibitory and anticonvulsant activities. All substituted benzthiazoles inhibited activity of monoamine oxidase in rat brain homogenate where the degree of enzyme inhibition was higher with kynuramine as compared to tyramine and 5-hydroxytryptamine as the substrates. All substituted benzthiazoles possessed measurable anticonvulsant activity against pentylenetetrazol-induced convulsions.

Abstract
An experimental model of diffuse thromboembolism in the intrarenal circulation of the rhesus monkey was produced by intra-arterial injection of homogenised, homologous [125-I]fibrin. A sequential study of thromolysis was carried out using the conventional method of determining the thromboembolic index in the arteries of both kidneys together with radioautography and counting of radioactivity in the renal homogenate. Quantitative estimation of radioactivity in the renal homogenate, as well as radioautography of kidney sections provided more accurate and sensititve indices of the thrombolytic process than the conventional thrombembolic index. Studies on blood coagulation and fibrinolysis revealed only mild changes corresponding to the dynamics of thrombolysis in vivo. It was further noted that the thrombolytic mechanism in rhesus monkeys is very active and can clear thromboemboli from the intrarenal arteries within 8 days of their induction

Abstract
Bone weight as a discriminative factor for identification of sex was studied in tarsal bones (172 calcanei and 164 tali) from the Varanasi region. The DPs for the weight of these bones identified sex correctly in a good percentage of cases, especially from the male bones. The findings suggest weight of tarsal bones as a useful metrical feature for discriminating sexual dimorphism.

Thirty-seven children with transposition of the great arteries have undergone Mustard's operation in Birmingham Children's Hospital from May 1968 to December 1971. Thirtythree of these had simple transposition of the great arteries and four were complicated. All but two had some previous palliative procedures. Ten patients died before discharge from hospital and there were two late deaths, one after three months and the other after eight months. Bleeding, dysrhythmia, and hypotension were common immediate postoperative complications, while recurrent heart failure and persistent atrioventricular block occurred in five and four patients respectively.

Abstract
An investigation was carried out of the diagnostic value of hepato-jugular reflux in patients with heart failure. The effect of abdominal compression on superior vena cava pressure was assessed in patients with and without heart failure. In four of the six patients without congestive cardiac failure, during compression, whether applied in the right hypochondrium or left iliac fossa, there was a significant rise in vena cava pressure. A similar response was also observed in three patients with congestive heart failure. Hepato-jugular reflex is not a reliable sign of incipient heart failure.

Abstract
Six infants had congestive heart failure for which no cause could be found apart from a low serum calcium. All except one recovered completely and had normal chest x-ray appearances and E.C.G.s on discharge from hospital. Necropsy on the infant who died shoed engorgement and dilation of the right side of the heart and a small ductus but no other abnormalities. It is suggested that hypocalcaemia should be considered as a possible cause of heart failure in infants, especially when oedema is prominent.
