Abstract
Silica gel is currently being used as a support for various straight chain mono- and bifunctional compounds such as amines, thiols (mercaptans), and mercaptoalochols. The current study reports the results of an investigation of a 2-mercaptoethoxy moiety covalently attached to silica gel. The condensation was effected by acid-catalyzed condensation of toluene solution of 2-mercaptoethanol and silica gel and azeotropically removing the water using a Dean-Stark tube. As a coordinating agent, this bifunctional compound was used in the removal of copper(II), cadmium(II), and lead(II) from standard aqueous solutions. Using silica gel support, the removal percentages were 91-93% for the three metals.

Abstract
Silica gel (60-120 mesh) efficiently catalyses the opening of epoxide rings by amines at rt under solvent-free conditions providing an easy method for the synthesis of 2-amino alcohols. Aromatic and aliphatic amines react with cyclohexene oxide with exclusive formation of the trans-2-aryl/alkylaminocyclohexanols in high yields. A complementary regioselectivity is exhibited by aromatic and aliphatic amines during the reaction with styrene oxide. The epoxide ring of non-styrenoidal unsymmetrical alkene oxide undergoes selective nucleophilic attack at the sterically less hindered carbon by aniline.

Abstract
The tosylation reaction of endocrine-disruptive alkylphenolic compounds in a solid-phase aqueous system was investigated with the aim of developing an environment-friendly and efficient derivatization method for HPLC analyses of environmental samples. The phenols were rapidly and efficiently converted to the tosyl derivatives on a commercially available ODS solid-phase cartridge by passing an aqueous buffer solution through it. The solid-phase aqueous tosylation system has been incorporated into a preconcentration step performed by solid-phase extraction from environmental water.

Abstract
Sol-gel derived silicas are potential biomaterials both for tissue regeneration and drug delivery applications. In this study, both SiO(2) and calcium and phosphate-containing SiO(2) (CaPSiO(2)) are combined with poly-(DL-lactide) to form a composite. The main properties studied are the ion release rates of biologically important ions (soluble SiO(2) and Ca(2+)) and the formation of bone mineral-like calcium phosphate (CaP) on the composite surface. These properties are studied by varying the quality, content and granule size of silica gel in the composite, and porosity of the polymer. The results indicate that release rates of SiO(2) and Ca(2+) depend mostly on the formed CaP layer, but in some extent also on the granule size of silicas and polymer porosity. The formation of the bone mineral-like CaP is suggested to be induced by a thin SiO(-) layer on the composite surface. However, due to absence of active SiO(2) or CaPSiO(2) granules on the outermost surface, the suitable nanoscale dimensions do not contribute the nucleation and growth and an extra source for calcium is needed instead. The result show also that all composites with varying amount of CaPSiO(2) (10-60 wt%) formed bone mineral-like CaP on their surfaces, which provides possibilities to optimise the mechanical properties of composites.

Abstract
The differential behavior of five different quaternary mono- and diammonium salts, among the 18 investigated, in modulating the electroendoosmotic flow (EOF) and analyte separations in capillary zone electrophoresis is evaluated. It is found that quaternary diammonium salts with positive charges separated by more than four carbon atoms, while exhibiting a very strong affinity for chromatographic silica beads, to the point of exhibiting Rf values close to zero, display, on the contrary, a very poor affinity for the silica wall of capillaries. Compounds separated only by a C2 unit (i.e., 1,4-dialkyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2,2,2,]octane, salts 17 and 18) show high Rf values due to strong ion pair association. The unique behavior of quaternary monoammonium salts possessing an iodinated alkyl (butyl or octyl) tail (i.e., 1, 6, and 7) is attributed to their ability to be covalently affixed to the silica wall via alkylation of ionized silanols at alkaline pH values. They thus strongly modulate and typically invert the EOF, even when not present in the background electrolyte. On the contrary, all diammonium salts, devoid of such alkyl tails, are unable to modulate the EOF and to prevent analyte binding to the silica wall, since they are rapidly removed from the wall by the voltage gradient. However, if added in small amount to the background electrolyte, they offer excellent separations of mixtures of very similar organic acids and prevent any interaction with the capillary wall.

Abstract
The structural variations of silica gels heated at different temperatures have been firstly studied using Nd(3+) as a probe by photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), together with IR spectroscopy and thermal analysis. With increasing temperature, the f-f transitions of Nd(3+) show a red shift and the PA intensities increase. The PA branching vector of the transitions from ground state to 4G(5/2)+(2)G(7/2), which are hypersensitive transitions, increase and the others decrease or change little. These indicate that the covalency of the bond that Nd(3+) forms increases and the symmetry around Nd(3+) decreases, which reflects the structural variations of silica gels.

Abstract
Not much has been written about air cleaning from ozone. The aim of this paper was to demonstrate the possibility of adsorption air cleaning from ozone. The second aim was to investigate the dependence of the efficiency of ozone removal from the air on the height of the adsorber layer and on concentrations of ozone, and to obtain empirical formulas for calculating the efficiency of ozone treatment. Equipment for air cleaning from ozone and nitrogen and sulphur dioxides is suggested.

Abstract
A general mass spectrometry technique for the characterization of alkanethiol-modified surfaces is presented. Alkanethiol self-assembled onto a gold surface (in this case, peptides were attached to the gold surface via a thiolate bond) was reductively desorbed in 0.05 M KOH in the presence of octadecyl-derivatized silica gel. The peptide adsorbed onto the silica gel, whereupon it could be filtered, washed to remove any salts, and then eluted using a mixture of 4:1 v/v methanol/water. The eluant containing the peptide was injected into a Fourier transform ion-cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FTICR/MS) via electrospray ionization. The spectrum showed no fragmentation of the peptide, demonstrating the gentleness of the technique. This simple procedure is not limited to FTICR/MS and could be adapted to other mass spectrometers.

Abstract
Suspended solids in the nutrient medium for Acetobacter xylinium in a rotating disk bioreactor become incorporated into the gelatinous mat of bacterial cellulose as it forms. Embedding fibers of ordinary cellulose creates composites with enhanced strength and the toughness of bacterial cellulose. Purified cellulose and elongated fibers from paper are incorporated differently than are spherical particles such as silica gel. About 90% of the final cellulose can come from scrap paper, and dried composite sheets were much stronger than plain bacterial cellulose per unit area.

Abstract
Surface grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on silica gel and a polyethylene bead was performed by radical polymerization and radiation-induced polymerization, respectively, in order to improve softness. Subsequently, diethylene triamine (DETA), triethylene tetraamine (TETA), and iminodiacetic acid (IDA) were introduced to the grafted GMA for use as affinity columns. The efficiency of the affinity column was investigated by use of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and hemoglobin (Hb) as model proteins. The affinity degree of BSA was higher than Hb for the DETA and TETA column, whereas the affinity degree of Hb was higher than BSA for the IDA column supported by silica gel. The affinity degree of BSA was higher than Hb for the DETA and TTA column supported by polyethylene (PE) beads.

Abstract
The enantiomeric resolution of certain 2-arylpropionic acids was achieved on thin silica gel plates impregnated with optically pure L-(-)-serine as chiral selector. The mobile phase enabling successful resolution of (+/-)-ibuproxam and (+/-)-ketoprofen was acetonitrile-methanol-water (16:4:0.5, v/v/v) and (16:3:0.5, v/v/v) for (+/-)-tiaprofenic acid. The spots were detected with iodine vapors and the detection limits were found to be different for each of the 2-arylpropionic acid, ranging between 0.25 and 0.50 microg/ml. The effect of concentration of the impregnating chiral selector, temperature and pH on resolution has been studied. The procedure was applied successfully to resolve commercial ampoules of ketoprofen dosage formulation.

Abstract
In this paper we introduce a preliminary work in which a redox mediator containing polyvinylferrocene immobilized on silica gel particles is synthesized. Carbon paste electrodes prepared with this polymeric mediator were studied for their stability in aqueous media for a month. The results indicated that approximately 70% of the initial activity was retained after a month. A steady state amperometric measurement of this carbon paste electrode containing this mediator and glucose oxidase at different potentials showed a linear relationship at elevated glucose concentration.

Abstract
The pesticide picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid) was anchored onto silica gel to yield a new surface. Isothermal microcalorimetry was applied to study the toxic effects caused to microbial activity of a typical Brazilian agricultural soil by application of free and immobilized picloram. The activity of the microorganisms in 1.50 g of soil sample was stimulated by addition of 6.0 mg of glucose plus 6.0 mg of ammonium sulfate under 34.8% controlled humidity at 298.15+/-0.02 K. The activity was recorded through power-time curves for increasing amounts of the active principle, varying from zero to 10.00 microg g(-1). The increasing amounts of picloram, either free or immobilized, caused a decrease of the original thermal effect. The calorimetric data showed that the anchored pesticide presented a much lower toxic effect than the free picloram on the microbial activity.

Abstract
The determination of FA in cold water marine samples is challenging because of the presence of large proportions of a variety of labile PUFA. This study was undertaken to establish optimal methods for FA analysis in various sample types present in the marine environment. Several techniques used in FA analysis, including lipid fractionation, FAME formation, and picolinyl ester synthesis, were examined. Neutral lipids, acetone-mobile polar lipids, and phospholipids (PL) were readily separated from each other on columns of activated silica gel, but recoveries of PL were reduced. Deactivation of the silica gel with 20% w/w water produced variable recoveries of PL (66 +/- 22%). FAME formation with BF3 gave optimal recoveries, and a method to remove hydrocarbon contamination from these samples before GC analysis using column chromatography was optimized. Picolinyl derivatives of FA are useful in structural determinations with MS, and a new base-catalyzed transesterification method of their synthesis from FAME was developed. Finally, a series of calculations, combining FA proportions with acyl lipid class concentrations, was designed to estimate FA concentrations. In algae and animal samples, these estimates were in good agreement with actual FA concentrations determined by internal standards.

A limited number has been stored by freeze-drying between 1985 and 1998. It is recommended that each isolate should be maintained by at least two of these methods. The choice of the method will depend to a large extent on the equipment and facilities available in the laboratory. Abstract
A simple and efficient method for removing excess acyl donors following enzymatic acylations in organic solvents was developed. This method is based on selective chemical scavenging of acyl donors using an amino-functionalized solid support, and does not affect the desired acylated product. A wide variety of different acyl donors, including vinyl and trifluoroethyl esters and vinyl carbonates, can be quantitatively removed by this method, thus providing a simple and highly efficient tool for purification of reaction products after enzymatic acylation.

Silica-based cation-exchange resins (TSKgel SP-2SW and TSKgel CM-2SW) were very suitable for the ion-exclusion chromatographic separation of these benzenecarboxylic acids. Excellent simultaneous separation of these benzenecarboxylic acids was achieved on a TSKgel SP-2SW column (150 x 6 mm I.D.) in 17 min using a 2.5 mM sulfuric acid at pH 2.4 as the eluent. Polymethacrylate-based cation-exchange resins (TSKgel SP-5PW, TSKgel CM-5PW and TSKgel OA-Pak A) acted as advanced stationary phases for the ion-exclusion chromatographic separation of these C1-C7 aliphatic carboxylic acids. Abstract
Tocainide and its 14 analogues were resolved on a chiral stationary phase (CSP) based on (3,3'-diphenyl-1,1'-binaphthyl)-20-crown-6 covalently bonded to silica gel. The resolution was quite good, the separation (alpha) and resolution factors (Rs) being 1.84-15.32 and 1.34-13.78, respectively. Especially, the result for the resolution of tocainide on the CSP turns out to be the best one among others reported so far. The chromatographic resolution behaviors were demonstrated to be dependent on the content and the type of organic and acidic modifiers and the ammonium acetate concentration in aqueous mobile phase.

Abstract
Silica gel surface has been modified in two reaction steps: (i) the silylating agent 3-mercaptopropyltrimetoxysilane was firstly immobilized to give a surface Sil-SH and (ii) this precursor incorporated an ethylene sulfide molecule to obtain the surface denoted Sil-SSH. This material was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, solid state 13C and 29Si NMR, and surface area measurement. These materials were employed as adsorbents for divalent heavy cations from aqueous solutions at room temperature and the isotherms were adjusted to a modified Langmuir equation. Abstract
Highly porous silica aerogels with differing balances of hydrophobic and hydrophilic functionalities were studied as a new immobilization medium for enzymes. Two types of lipases from Candida rugosa and Burkholderia cepacia were homogeneously dispersed in wet gel precursors before gelation. The materials obtained were compared in a simple model reaction: transesterification of vinyl laurate by 1-octanol. To allow a better comparison of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic action of the solid, very open aerogel networks with traditional organic hydrophobic/hydrophilic liquid solvents, this reaction was studied in mixtures containing different proportions of 2-methyl-2-butanol, isooctane, and water. The results are discussed in relation to the porous and hydrophobic nature of aerogels, characterized by nitrogen adsorption. It was found that silica aerogels can be considered as "solid" solvents for the enzymes, able to provide hydrophobic/hydrophilic characteristics different from those prevailing in the liquid surrounding the aerogels. A simple mechanism of action for these aerogel networks is proposed.
