Efficacy of ivermectin against gastrointestinal nematodes in dromedary camels

The anthelmintic activity of ivermectin when administered orally and subcutaneously at a dosage of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight was evaluated in 4 trials involving 20 dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius). Fecal egg counts were made on the day of treatment and at 2, 4, and 10 weeks after treatment. Trichostrongylid egg counts were reduced by a maximum of 100% when ivermectin was administered orally and by greater than 88% when given subcutaneously. Egg counts of Trichuris spp were reduced by greater than 85% with oral administration, but increased following subcutaneous treatment. No adverse local or systemic reactions were observed following treatment with ivermectin by either route.

Ivermectin for the control of swine scabies: relative values of prefarrowing treatment of sows and weaning treatment of pigs

Ivermectin given in a single subcutaneous dose (300 micrograms/kg of body weight) was tested for activity against swine scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei). Efficacy was determined by recoveries of mites from ear scrapings and by observations of clinical signs. Treatment of infected sows 8 to 37 days before farrowing eliminated scabies from the sows and prevented its transmission to their offspring. Pigs farrowed by ivermectin-treated sows remained noninfected throughout the study regardless of whether they were treated with ivermectin at weaning. Placebo-treated sows remained infected and transmitted scabies to their offspring. Ivermectin treatment of pigs at weaning eliminated the infection, whereas placebo treatment did not. The placebo-treated pigs remained infected while in the nursery, but ivermectin treatment eliminated the infection when they were moved to the growing and finishing floor at 12 weeks of age. It appears that an effective control program for swine scabies using ivermectin could be based on a single treatment of the sows before farrowing. Any infection (epizootic) appearing in growing pigs could be controlled by a single treatment of all in-contact pigs.

Pholeter anterouterus Fischthal & Nasir, 1974 (Digenea: Opisthorchiidae) redescribed, together with remarks on the genera Pholeter Odhner, 1914 and Phocitrema Goto & Ozaki, 1930 and their relationship to the centrocestine heterophyids

Photoleter anterouterus Fischthal & Nasir, 1974, from Pelecanus occidentalis Linnaeus and Pelecanus erythrorhynchos Gmelin from Florida, USA and the ventro-genital complexes of Photeleter gastrophilus (Kossack, 1910) from Delphinus delphis Linnaeus from Queensland, Australia and of Phocitrema fusiforme Goto & Ozaki, 1930 from Alopex lagopus (Linnaeus) and Phoca vitulina Linnaeus from Alaska are redescribed. The genus Photoleter Odhner, 1914 is emended and compared with Phocitrema Goto & Ozaki, 1930 and both genera are compared with members of, and as a result transferred from the family Opisthorchiidae Looss, 1899 to, the subfamily Centrocestinae Looss, 1899, family Heterophyidae Odhner, 1914.

Effect of diethylcarbamazine on indexes of fertility in the male dog

Four nondescript male dogs were given diethylcarbamazine citrate for 6 months at the rate of 13.2 mg/kg/day, twice the daily dose recommended for prevention of heartworm infections; 4 nonmedicated dogs were sham controls. Semen was collected and evaluated weekly or monthly for 6 months. There was no statistically significant deterioration in quantity, morphology, motility, or viability of sperm from the medicated dogs as compared with that of the controls.

Redescription of oocysts of the bovine coccidia Eimeria bukidnonensis Tubangui 1931 and E. wyomingensis Huizinga and Winger 1942

Oocysts of Eimeria bukidnonenisis and E. wyomingensis were found to be morphologically similar, and could be reliably differentiated only by measurements. Pyriform oocysts of E. bukidnonensis measured 43 to 51 by 30 to 35 mum (mean 47.4 by 33.0 mum); sporocysts were 18 to 21 by 9 to 11 mum (mean 19.6 by 9.8 mum). Micropyle present; polar granule, oocyst residuum, and sporocyst residuum absent. Oocyst wall of 2 layers, 3.5 mum thick, and dark brown. Pyriform oocysts of E. wyomingensis measured 36 to 44 by 26 to 30 mum (mean 39.9 by 28.3 mum); sporocysts were 17 to 20 by 8 to 10 mum (mean 18.7 by 8.6 mum). Micropyle present; polar granule, oocyst residuum, and sporocyst residuum absent. Oocyst wall of 2 layers, 2.5 mum thick, and colored brown. The width of the oocyst was the most reliable criterion for differentiating the 2 species.

Coccidia of sandhill cranes, Grus canadensis

Eimeria gruis Yakinoff and Matschoulsky 1935, Eimeria reichenowi Yakimoff and Matschoulsky 1935, and an Adelina species are described from sandhill cranes in the United States. E. gruis was found in the feces of 11 of 14 Florida sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis pratensis) and 62 of 72 greater sandhill cranes (G. c. tabida) from Florida, 5 of 14 greater sandhill cranes from Arizona, and 4 of 16 lesser sandhill cranes (G. c. canadensis) from Texas. E. reichenowi was found in the feces of 12 of 14 Florida sandhill cranes and 66 of 72 greater sandhill cranes from Florida, 4 of 14 greater sandhill cranes from Arizona, and 5 of 16 lesser sandhill cranes from Texas. Adelina sp. was found in the feces of 3 of 14 Florida sandhill cranes and 2 of 72 greater sandhill cranes from Florida. The Adelina species is considered to be a spurious parasite of the cranes.
