Abstract
INTRODUCTION We previously established a mouse pancreatic stem cell line without genetic manipulation. In this study, we sought to identify and isolate human pancreatic stem/progenitor cells. We also tested whether growth factors and protein transduction of pancreatic and duodenal homeobox factor-1 (PDX-1) and BETA2/NeuroD into human pancreatic stem/progenitor cells induced insulin or pancreas-related gene expressions. MATERIALS AND METHOD Human pancreata from brain-dead donors were used for islet isolation with the standard Ricordi technique modified by the Edmonton protocol. The cells from a duct-rich population were cultured in several media, based on those designed for mouse pancreatic or for human embryonic stem cells. To induce cell differentiation, cells were cultured for 2 weeks with exendin-4, nicotinamide, keratinocyte growth factor, PDX-1 protein, or BETA2/NeuroD protein. RESULTS The cells in serum-free media showed morphologies similar to a mouse pancreatic stem cell line, while the cells in the medium for human embryonic stem cells formed fibroblast-like morphologies. The nucleus/cytoplasm ratios of the cells in each culture medium decreased during the culture. The cells stopped dividing after 30 days, suggesting that they had entered senescence. The cells treated with induction medium differentiated into insulin-producing cells, expressing pancreas-related genes. CONCLUSION Duplications of cells from a duct-rich population were limited. Induction therapy with several growth factors and transduction proteins might provide a potential new strategy for induction of transplantable insulin-producing cells.

Abstract
We report a study of the cyclotron resonance (CR) transitions to and from the unusual n=0 Landau level (LL) in monolayer graphene. Unexpectedly, we find the CR transition energy exhibits large (up to 10%) and nonmonotonic shifts as a function of the LL filling factor, with the energy being largest at half filling of the n=0 level. The magnitude of these shifts, and their magnetic field dependence, suggests that an interaction-enhanced energy gap opens in the n=0 level at high magnetic fields. Such interaction effects normally have a limited impact on the CR due to Kohn's theorem [W. Kohn, Phys. Rev. 123, 1242 (1961)], which does not apply in graphene as a consequence of the underlying linear band structure.

Abstract
During thunderstorms on 20 September 2008, a simultaneous detection of gamma rays and electrons was made at a mountain observatory in Japan located 2770 m above sea level. Both emissions, lasting 90 sec, were associated with thunderclouds rather than lightning. The photon spectrum, extending to 10 MeV, can be interpreted as consisting of bremsstrahlung gamma rays arriving from a source which is 60-130 m in distance at 90% confidence level. The observed electrons are likely to be dominated by a primary population escaping from an acceleration region in the clouds.

Abstract
We present the first measurements of cyclotron resonance of electrons and holes in bilayer graphene. In magnetic fields up to B=18 T, we observe four distinct intraband transitions in both the conduction and valence bands. The transition energies are roughly linear in B between the lowest Landau levels, whereas they follow square root[B] for the higher transitions. This highly unusual behavior represents a change from a parabolic to a linear energy dispersion. The density of states derived from our data generally agrees with the existing lowest order tight binding calculation for bilayer graphene. However, in comparing data to theory, a single set of fitting parameters fails to describe the experimental results.

Abstract
The intensity of Galactic cosmic rays is nearly isotropic because of the influence of magnetic fields in the Milky Way. Here, we present two-dimensional high-precision anisotropy measurement for energies from a few to several hundred teraelectronvolts (TeV), using the large data sample of the Tibet Air Shower Arrays. Besides revealing finer details of the known anisotropies, a new component of Galactic cosmic ray anisotropy in sidereal time is uncovered around the Cygnus region direction. For cosmic-ray energies up to a few hundred TeV, all components of anisotropies fade away, showing a corotation of Galactic cosmic rays with the local Galactic magnetic environment. These results have broad implications for a comprehensive understanding of cosmic rays, supernovae, magnetic fields, and heliospheric and Galactic dynamic environments.

Abstract
Muon neutrino disappearance probability as a function of neutrino flight length L over neutrino energy E was studied. A dip in the L/E distribution was observed in the data, as predicted from the sinusoidal flavor transition probability of neutrino oscillation. The observed L/E distribution constrained nu(micro)<-->nu(tau) neutrino oscillation parameters; 1.9x10(-3)<Deltam(2)<3.0x10(-3) eV(2) and sin((2)2theta>0.90 at 90% confidence level.

Abstract
We report on the solar diurnal variation of the galactic cosmic-ray intensity observed by the Tibet III air shower array during the period from 1999 to 2003. In the higher-energy event samples (12 and 6.2 TeV), the variations are fairly consistent with the Compton-Getting anisotropy due to the terrestrial orbital motion around the Sun, while the variation in the lower-energy event sample (4.0 TeV) is inconsistent with this anisotropy. This suggests an additional anisotropy superposed at the multi-TeV energies, e.g., the solar modulation effect. This is the highest-precision measurement of the Compton-Getting anisotropy ever made.

Abstract
A search for a nonzero neutrino magnetic moment has been conducted using 1496 live days of solar neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande-I. Specifically, we searched for distortions to the energy spectrum of recoil electrons arising from magnetic scattering due to a nonzero neutrino magnetic moment. In the absence of a clear signal, we found micro(nu)</=(3.6x10(-10))micro(B) at 90% C.L. by fitting to the Super-Kamiokande day-night spectra. The fitting took into account the effect of neutrino oscillation on the shapes of energy spectra. With additional information from other solar neutrino and KamLAND experiments constraining the oscillation region, a limit of micro(nu)</=(1.1x10(-10))micro(B) at 90% C.L. was obtained.

Abstract
We present the results of a search for low energy nu(e) from the Sun using 1496 days of data from Super-Kamiokande-I. We observe no significant excess of events and set an upper limit for the conversion probability to nu(e) of the 8B solar neutrino. This conversion limit is 0.8% (90% C.L.) of the standard solar model's neutrino flux for total energy=8-20 MeV. We also set a flux limit for monochromatic nu(e) for E(nu(e))=10-17 MeV.

Abstract
A search for the relic neutrinos from all past core-collapse supernovae was conducted using 1496 days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector. This analysis looked for electron-type antineutrinos that had produced a positron with an energy greater than 18 MeV. In the absence of a signal, 90% C.L. upper limits on the total flux were set for several theoretical models; these limits ranged from 20 to 130 macro nu(e) cm(-2) s(-1). Additionally, an upper bound of 1.2 macro nu(e) cm(-2) s(-1) was set for the supernova relic neutrino flux in the energy region E(nu)>19.3 MeV.

Abstract
We present a measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in B0-->pi(+)pi(-) decays based on a 41.8 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. We fully reconstruct one neutral B meson as a B0-->pi(+)pi(-) CP eigenstate and identify the flavor of the accompanying B meson from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we obtain the CP-violating asymmetry parameters S(pipi)=-1.21(+0.38)(-0.27)(stat)+0.16-0.13(syst) and A(pipi)=+0.94(+0.25)(-0.31)(stat)+/-0.09(syst).

Abstract
We report the first observation of chi(c2) production in B meson decays. We find an inclusive B-->chi(c2)X branching fraction of (1.80(+0.23)(-0.28)+/-0.26) x 10(-3). The data set, collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider, consists of 31.9 x 10(6) BB events. We also present branching fractions and momentum spectra for both chi(c1) and chi(c2) production.

Abstract
We report the observation of the decay mode B(+/-) --> p(-)pK(+/-)based on an analysis of 29.4 fb(-1) of data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. This is the first example of a b-->s transition with baryons in the final state. The p(-)p mass spectrum in this decay is inconsistent with phase space and is peaked at low mass. The branching fraction for this decay is measured to be B(B+/--->p(-)pK+/-) = [4.3(+1.1)(-0.9)(stat)+/-0.5(syst)]x 10(-6). We also report upper limits for the decays B(0)-->p(-)pK(S) and B(+/-)-->p(-)p pi(+/-).

Abstract
The lifetimes of the B(0) and B- mesons are extracted from 29.1 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEK B factory. A fit to the decay length differences of neutral and charged B meson pairs, measured in events where one of the B mesons is fully reconstructed in several hadronic modes, yields tau(B(0)) = 1.554+/-0.030(stat)+/-0.019(syst) ps, tau(B-) = 1.695+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.015(syst) ps, and tau(B-)/tau(B(0)) = 1.091+/-0.023(stat)+/-0.014(syst).

Abstract
We report a measurement of the D0-D macro(0) mixing parameter y(CP) using 23.4 fb(-1) of data collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. y(CP) is measured from the lifetime difference of D0 mesons decaying into the K(-)pi(+) state and the CP-even eigenstate K(-)K(+). We find y(CP) = (-0.5+/-1.0(+0.7)(-0.8))x10(-2), where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, corresponding to a 95% confidence interval -0.030<y(CP)<0.020.

Abstract
The production of prompt J/psi, psi(2S), chi(c1), and chi(c2) is studied using a 32.4 fb(-1) data sample collected with the Belle detector at Upsilon(4S) and at 60 MeV below the resonance. The yield of prompt J/psi mesons in the Upsilon(4S) sample is compatible with that of continuum production; we set an upper limit B(Upsilon(4S)-->J/psiX) < 1.9 x 10(-4) at the 95% confidence level, and find sigma(e(+)e(-)-->J/psiX) = 1.47 plus/minus 0.10 plus/minus 0.13 pb. The cross sections for prompt psi(2S) and direct J/psi are measured. The J/psi momentum spectrum, production angle distribution, and polarization are studied.

The branching fractions are B(B( 0)-->D0pi(0)) = (3.1 +/- 0.4 +/- 0.5)x10(-4), B(B( 0) -->D(*0)pi(0)) = (2.7(+0.8+0.5)(-0.7-0.6))x10(-4), B(B( 0) --> D0eta) = (1.4(+0.5)(-0.4) +/- 0.3)x10(-4), B(B( 0) --> D0omega) = (1.8 +/- 0.5(+0.4)(-0.3))x10(-4), and we set 90% confidence level upper limits of B(B( 0) --> D(*0)eta)<4.6 x 10(-4) and B(B( 0)-->D(*0)omega)<7.9 x 10(-4). The analysis is based on a data sample of 21.3 fb(-1) collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider.

Abstract
Using a sample of 31.3x10(6) BB pairs collected with the Belle detector at the Upsilon(4S) resonance, we make the first observation of the charged B meson decay to chi(c0) and a charged kaon. The measured branching fraction is B(B+-->chi(c0)K+) = (6.0(+2.1)(-1.8)+/-1.1)x10(-4), where the first error is statistical, and the second is systematic.

Abstract
We report the first observation of the exclusive decay process B-->J/psi K(1)(1270) using a sample of 11.2M BB macro meson pairs collected in the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e(+)e(-) collider. We measure branching fractions of B[B(0)-->J/psi K(0)(1)(1270)] = (1.30+/-0.34+/-0.32) x 10(-3) and B[B(+)-->J/psi K(+)(1)(1270)] = (1.80+/-0.34+/-0.39) x 10(-3), where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. These modes constitute approximately 15% of the total number of B-->J/psi X decays. No evidence is seen for B-->J/psi K(1)(1400) and we set an upper limit for this branching fraction.

Abstract
It is urgently necessary to clarify functions of uncharacterized proteins. To understand life processes, we must investigate the functions and networks of proteins expressed from genomic DNA. In the near future, microinfusion experiments will become a more important method for analyzing uncharacterized function of proteins in vivo. Here we provide a practical manual for performing microinfusion experiments in mice. We also describe our experiment in which we performed a single injection of morphine following Secreted Protein Acidic and Rich in Cysteine (SPARC) infusion into the basolateral amygdala of previously uninjected mice and found markedly enhanced locomotor activity. We discuss the utility of microinfusion experiments in mice.

Abstract
We report observations of the Cabibbo suppressed decays B-->D((*))K- using a 10.4 fb(-1) data sample accumulated at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) storage ring. We find that the ratios of Cabibbo suppressed to Cabibbo favored branching fractions are B(B--->D0K-)/B(B--->D0pi(-)) = 0.079+/-0.009+/-0.006, B(B(0)-->D+K-)/B(B(0)-->D+pi(-)) = 0.068+/-0.015+/-0.007, B(B--->D(*0)K-)/B(B--->D(*0)pi(-)) = 0.078+/-0.019+/-0.009, and B(B(0)-->D(*+)K-)/B(B(0)-->D(*+)pi(-)) = 0.074+/-0.015+/-0.006. These are the first observations of the B-->D+K-, D(*0)K-, and D(*+)K- decay processes.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin2 phi(1) based on a 29.1 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed as a J/psi K(S), psi(2S)K(S), chi(c1)K(S), eta(c)K(S), J/psi K(L), or J/psi K(*0) decay and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we determine sin2 phi(1) = 0.99+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.06(syst). We conclude that we have observed CP violation in the neutral B meson system.

Abstract
We report the result of a search for neutrino oscillations using precise measurements of the recoil electron energy spectrum and zenith angle variations of the solar neutrino flux from 1258 days of neutrino-electron scattering data in Super-Kamiokande. The absence of significant zenith angle variation and spectrum distortion places strong constraints on neutrino mixing and mass difference in a flux-independent way. Using the Super-Kamiokande flux measurement in addition, two allowed regions at large mixing are found.

Abstract
Solar neutrino measurements from 1258 days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector are presented. The measurements are based on recoil electrons in the energy range 5.0-20.0 MeV. The measured solar neutrino flux is 2.32+/-0.03(stat)+0.08-0.07(syst)x10(6) cm(-2) x s(-1), which is 45.1+/-0.5(stat)+1.6-1.4(syst)% of that predicted by the BP2000 SSM. The day vs night flux asymmetry (Phi(n)-Phi(d))/Phi(average) is 0.033+/-0.022(stat)+0.013-0.012(syst). The recoil electron energy spectrum is consistent with no spectral distortion. For the hep neutrino flux, we set a 90% C.L. upper limit of 40x10(3) cm(-2) x s(-1), which is 4.3 times the BP2000 SSM prediction.

Abstract
We examined whether long-term potentiation (LTP) affects cortical gamma-band electroencephalograms (EEG) in the hippocampo-prefrontal cortex (PFC) pathway of anesthetized rats. The LTP induction increased the evoked PFC gamma-band EEG power (40-100 Hz) to 120-135% at 500-700 ms after test stimulation. A simple increment of stimulus intensity, instead of LTP induction, did not reveal this evoked increase. Neither LTP induction nor the intensity increment changed significantly the magnitude of an evoked decrease at around 100 ms or the spontaneous prestimulation gamma-band power. These results indicate that LTP in PFC specifically increases the evoked gamma-band EEG power, which may reflect a phasic mode of plastic neurotransmission through the hippocampo-PFC pathway in vivo.

Abstract
To confirm neural plasticity of the mouse hippocampo-prefrontal cortex (PFC) pathway, paired-pulse facilitation (PPF) and long-term potentiation (LTP) induction were determined in the pathway. In addition, we tested whether the plasticity differs in projections of the pathway from the dorsal (upper) and ventral (lower) parts of the temporal hippocampus. The results showed PPF and LTP of this pathway, and these differed between the projections. The projection from the upper part showed stronger PPF and weaker LTP compared with that from the lower part. These results suggest that the mouse hippocampo-PFC pathway is involved in learning and memory, and contains projections related to different functions.

Abstract
We report a determination of the B(0)(d)-&B_(0)(d) mixing parameter Deltam(d) based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The measurement is based on a 5.9 fb(-1) data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing Deltam(d) as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain Deltam(d) = 0.463+/-0.008 (stat)+/-0.016 (syst) ps(-1). This is the first determination of Deltam(d) from time evolution measurements at the Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin2 phi(1) (also known as sin2beta) based on a 10.5 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. One neutral B meson is reconstructed in the J/psiK(S), psi(2S)K(S), chi(c1)K(S), eta(c)K(S), J/psiK(L), or J/psipi(0) CP-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its charged particle decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between the two B-meson decay points, we determine sin2 phi(1) = 0.58(+0.32)(-0.34)(stat)+0.09-0.10(syst).

Abstract
We studied whether a protocol reported as in vivo prefrontal long-term depression (LTD) induction protocol, also induced LTD in the anesthetized rat hippocampal CA1, and whether differences in LTD induction existed between dorsal and ventral CA1, by low-frequency stimulation (LFS) (1 Hz, 900) or low-frequency burst stimulation (LFBS) (5-pulse burst at 4 ms interpulse intervals at 1 Hz, 900), hippocampo-prefrontal LTD induction protocol. Though LFS failed to induce stable LTD in dorsal or ventral CA1, LFBS reliably induced LTD in the ventral not dorsal CA1. This similarity between ventral hippocampal and hippocampo-prefrontal LTD induction thus implies their serial integration process, ventral CA3-CA1-prefrontal cortex pathway and observed dorsal and ventral differences involved in behavioral functions such as learning.

Abstract
An intact mesocortical dopaminergic (DA) input to the prefrontal cortex (PFC) has been reported to be necessary for long-term potentiation (LTP) to occur at hippocampal-prefrontal cortex synapses. Here, we investigated the role of D1 and D2 receptors in this NMDA receptor-dependent LTP. Local infusion of the D1 agonist SKF81297 at an optimal dose induced a sustained enhancement of hippocampal-PFC LTP, whereas the D1 antagonist SCH23390 caused a dose-related impairment of its induction. The D1 agonist effect was mimicked by infusion of a low dose of the adenylyl cyclase activator forskolin, whereas LTP was severely attenuated with a protein kinase A inhibitor, Rp-cAMPS. To further assess the complex interplay between DA and NMDA receptors, changes in extracellular DA levels in the PFC were estimated during LTP, and a significant increase was observed immediately after tetanus. Taken together, these data suggest that D1 but not D2 receptors are crucial for the DA control of the NMDA receptor-mediated synaptic response on a specific excitatory input to the PFC. The interactions of these receptors may play a crucial role in the storage and transfer of hippocampal information in the PFC.

Abstract
Repeated administration of morphine substantially increases its locomotor-enhancing activity, a phenomenon termed locomotor sensitization. Here we show that secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC), an anti-adhesive glycoprotein present in the basolateral amygdala, contributes to the establishment of locomotor sensitization. The morphine-induced increase in SPARC levels in the basolateral amygdala persisted after morphine withdrawal and coincided with the duration of locomotor sensitization. Moreover, a single injection of morphine after SPARC infusion into the basolateral amygdala of previously uninjected mice substantially enhanced locomotor activity. Thus, SPARC may be an important element for establishing locomotor sensitization to morphine.

Abstract
We evaluated the sex-related differences in the decline of the cerebral muscarinic acetylcholinergic receptor (mACh-R) due to aging by using 11C-N-methyl-4-piperidyl benzilate (11C-NMPB) and positron emission tomography (PET). The subjects consisted of 37 (20 males and 17 females) healthy volunteers. The 11C-NMPB uptake was evaluated by the ratio method (regional 11C-NMPB uptake/Cerebellar 11C-NMPB uptake; rNMPB ratio). The correlation between sex, aging, and the rNMPB ratio in normal aging was evaluated by a multiple regression analysis. The rNMPB ratio was higher in females than in males throughout the entire cerebral region (p < 0.01-p < 0.0001) and the rNMPB ratio might thus possibly decline with age more rapidly in females. Our study therefore revealed the existence of sex-related differences in the cerebral mACh-R.

Abstract
Adenosine has an anticonvulsant effect in various models of epilepsy. This effect appears to be mediated through the activation of adenosine A1 receptors (A1Rs). We immunohistochemically investigated the changes of A1Rs expression in kainate-treated and hippocampus-kindled rats as chronic models of epilepsy. In the normal hippocampus, a predominant expression of A1Rs was detected in the CA2/CA3a field. The A1Rs immunoreactivity in this field began to decline drastically approximately 4 weeks after kainate treatment and remained minimal 8 weeks after treatment. In the hippocampus-kindled animals, A1Rs expression was minimal in the stimulated side but remained high in the nonstimulated side. The reduced expression of A1Rs in the CA2/CA3a field may be related to chronic epileptogenesis.

Abstract
We studied excitatory field potentials in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC, prelimbic area) to electrostimulation of the ventral hippocampus (CA1/subicular region) in the anaesthetized rat. Nine hundred stimulus trains (5 pulses at 250 Hz) applied at 1 Hz to the ventral hippocampus significantly and persistently depressed the amplitude and maximal slope ( approximately 55% for each index) of the prelimbic field potentials, but did not change the latency of the maximal slope or peak negativity. Twelve stimulus trains (50 pulses at 250 Hz) applied subsequently at 0.1 Hz restored the depression back to control level, and this reversible depression was maintained for at least 13 h. Cumulative depressive effects on the prelimbic field potential amplitude and maximal slope were observed upon addition of stimulus trains in the hippocampus. An important implication of the results is that the direct pathway from the hippocampus to the mPFC in the rat retains long-term depression (LTD) as a neuroplastic form in vivo. This form could cooperate with long-term potentiation (LTP) and such a bi-directional synaptic plasticity in the prefrontal cortex contributes to how cortical neural networks store information.

Abstract
The effects of chronic treatment with (+)-nicotine on the immobilization stress-induced changes in blood pressure, body weight, and [3H]cytisine binding to brain nicotinic receptors were examined in rats and were compared with those of (-)-nicotine. Immobilization stress (2 hr/day(-1), for 2 weeks) induced a moderate elevation of blood pressure, loss of body weight gain, and downregulation of [3H]cytisine binding sites in cerebral cortex and midbrain. Chronic treatment with (+)- or (-)-nicotine inhibited the stress-induced hypertension but did not suppress the inhibition of body weight gain by stress. Body weight before stress load was also reduced by (-)-nicotine but not (+)-nicotine treatment. Treatment with each isomer increased the maximum number of [3H]cytisine binding sites (Bmax) of brain stem, cerebral cortex, and hippocampus. The Bmax in midbrain was also increased by (+)-nicotine but not by (-)-nicotine. Stress-induced downregulation in cerebral cortex was inhibited by both isomers. These results suggest that (+)- and (-)-nicotine cause various effects, including anti-stress effect, on the central nervous system in rats, which are slightly different between the isomers.

Abstract
Proteins have been considered to consist exclusively of L-amino acids in living tissues. However, we found biologically uncommon D-aspartyl (Asp) residues at specific sites in alphaA- and alphaB-crystallin from the aged human lens (mean age: 80 years). In alphaB-crystallin, the Asp-36 and Asp-62 residues are highly racemized (D/L ratios: 0.92 for Asp-36; 0.54 for Asp-62). More interestingly, the configuration of the Asp-58 and Asp-151 residues in alphaA-crystallin is inverted to the D-isomer (D/L ratio: 3.1 for Asp-58, 5.7 for Asp-151). A D/L ratio > 1.0 is not considered to be due to racemization, but rather is thought to result from stereoconfiguration inversion. Our report was the first observation that inversion occurred in the configuration of amino acids in vivo during the natural aging process. We also found that these enantiomers were simultaneously isomerized to form beta-Asp residues. We propose that the mechanism of D- and beta-Asp formation in the protein depends on the primary structure and the presence of a chiral reaction field, which induces formation of D-Asp.

Abstract
Skeins or skein-like inclusions (SLIs) in motor neurons detected by ubiquitin immunohistochemistry are a characteristic finding of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Here we report ubiquitinated SLIs in the putamen and caudate nucleus from a case of ALS with dementia. A 48-year-old Japanese man developed apathy and amimia. Mental and neurological examinations revealed severe character change, muscle atrophy and fasciculation of the distal upper extremities and the tongue, and an exaggeration of the deep tendon reflex. He subsequently showed dysphagia and dysarthria. He died at the age of 51 years, after a total clinical course of about 2.5 years. By immunohistochemistry, ubiquitin-immunoreactive intraneuronal inclusions were observed in the spinal anterior horn cells, the frontal, temporal and entorhinal cortices, dentate fascia of the hippocampus and the amygdala. In addition, ubiquitinated inclusions were also seen in the putamen and caudate nucleus, which appeared as aggregates of thread-like structures similar to SLIs in the spinal anterior horn neurons. They were not seen on hematoxylin-eosin staining, and they also did not show any argentophilia nor did they react with other antibodies, including antibody against tau protein. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the presence of SLIs in non-motor neurons. Our results thus support the notion that ALS is a multisystem disease, and not simply a disease of the motor neurons.

Abstract
Angiogenic growth factors are essential for cancer metastasis, and the growth of metastatic foci also depends on these angiogenic growth factors as well as autocrine or paracrine growth factors. We therefore investigated whether vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and thymidine phosphorylase (dThdPase) are localized more often in primary tumors with hepatic metastasis than in those without such metastasis and whether transforming growth factor (TGF-alpha) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) are coexisted more often in hepatic metastases than in primary tumors of gastric cancer. Resected specimens from 82 patients with gastric cancer were examined immunohistochemically. The primary antibodies used were anti-VEGF, anti-dThdPase, anti-TGF-alpha and anti-EGF-R. VEGF expression was found to be higher in primary cancers with than in those without hepatic metastasis (p < 0.001), while VEGF was frequently observed in both hepatic metastases and in the primary tumors. Localization of dThdPase was also higher in advanced than in early gastric cancers (p = 0.021). High co-presence of TGF-alpha and EGF-R was detected more frequently in cancers with deep gastric wall invasion than in those without such invasion (p = 0.050), and also more often in cancers with venous invasion (p = 0.007) and those in the advanced stage (p = 0.020). Co-presence of TGF-alpha and EGF-R was found to be higher, though not significantly, in hepatic metastases (58.8%) than in primary tumors (29.4%). These findings suggest that localization of VEGF may play an important role in hepatic metastasis, and that the expression of VEGF, dThdPase and the TGF-alpha/EGF-R pathway may be responsible for the growth of hepatic metastasis.

Abstract
Examinations of peritoneal lavage smears (cy) in gastric cancer surgical stages III and IV are very important for determining the disease stage. We have been carrying out these examinations for 8 years. One hundred sixty patients with gastric cancer were examined. The incidence of cy positivity was higher in T4 than in T3, and higher in P1,2,3 than in P0. We performed intraperitoneal administration of CDDP in 10 patients with gastric cancer using a reservoir (Infuse-A-Port) implanted in the abdominal wall once a week. No difference in survival was observed between patients who received chemotherapy via i.p. and those who received it i.v.

Abstract
A 67-year-old man was diagnosed as having a type 3 advanced esophageal carcinoma by barium swallow and endoscopy. Biopsy specimens showed well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma with positive immunostaining for p53, C-erb B-2 and negative for bcl-2. Two courses of chemotherapy using 5-FU, leucovorin and CDDP were performed before operation. Because no cancer cells were present in the surgical specimens, the effect was evaluated as grade 3. This neoadjuvant chemotherapy may be effective for esophageal carcinoma with a possible apoptosis mechanism.

Abstract
We studied the cerebral muscarinic acetylcholinergic receptor (mACh-R) by means of 11C-N-methyl-4-piperidyl benzilate (11C-NMPB) and positron emission tomography (PET) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) cases, and the findings were compared with the cerebral blood flow (CBF) and the glucose metabolism (CMRGlc) to evaluate the relationship between the mACh-R and the CBF or the CMRGlc. The subjects consisted of 18 patients with AD and 18 age and sex matched normal volunteers. The patients were clinically diagnosed according to the criteria of the NINDS-ADRDA as having "probable AD" and were thus classified into two groups (mild and moderate AD) according to the severity of dementia determined by DSM-III-R. The CBF was measured by 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT, and the CMRGlc was measured by 18FDG PET. The 11C-NMPB uptake was evaluated by the graphical method and the ratio method (ROIs/Cerebellum). A significant mACh-R decrease and more severe CMRGlc decrease in the cortical region was seen in mild and moderate AD. The decrease in the CBF was not as obvious as that in the mACh-R and the CMRGlc. Our study thus suggested that the mACh-R decreased in patients with AD, and that the 18FDG PET was the most sensitive method for detecting the degenerative regions in patients with AD.

Abstract
The temporal increase of plasma corticosterone (CORT) levels at 3 or 4 days after a single oral administration of trimethyltin (TMT) was suppressed by intracerebroventricular administration of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra). On the other hand, glutamate receptor antagonist (MK801) did not affect the TMT-induced CORT level increase. These results indicate that this transient activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical axis in TMT-treated rats may be in part attributable to the neuroendocrine effects of IL-1 produced by microglia.
