Abstract
The monitoring of herpesvirus infection plays a central role in lung transplantation (LT). Herein we evaluated the prevalence of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6), human herpesvirus-7 (HHV-7), and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) DNA in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and transbronchial biopsy (TBB) specimens from LT patients. We associated the findings with the occurrence of interstitial pneumonia, acute rejection, or organizing pneumonia. Viral DNA was detected using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on 76 paired samples (BAL and TBB) from 27 patients who were receiving a universal combined prophylaxis (cytomegalovirus [CMV] immunoglobulin [Ig] + gancyclovir or valgancyclovir). Histopathological analysis was performed in accordance with the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) criteria. Overall, HCMV results were positive in 25/76 (32.9%) specimens (BAL and/or TBB); HHV-6 in 16 (21.1%); HHV-7 in 40 (52.6%); and EBV in 13 (17.1%). Interstitial pneumonia was diagnosed in 6/76 (7.9%) cases: 5 (83.3%) were positive to HCMV (combined specimens; P < .0001); 5 (83.3%) to HHV-7; and 2 (33.3%) to EBV. An acute rejection episode was diagnosed in 19/76 (25%) cases: 7 (36.8%) were positive to HCMV; 5 (26.3%) to HHV-6; 10 (52.6%) to HHV-7, and 3 (15.8%) to EBV. No significant association was observed between virus detection or load and acute rejection. Organizing pneumonia was diagnosed in 4/76 (5.3%) cases: 1 (25%) positive to HCMV; 4 (100%) to HHV-6 (P < .05); 2 (50%) to HHV-7; and none to EBV. In conclusion, the prevalence of HCMV tended to be lower than that reported in the literature, confirming the importance of universal combined prophylaxis. HCMV was a relevant agent for interstitial pneumonia; although the small numbers limit the statistical analysis, our data did not support an association between herpesviruses and acute rejection episodes, whereas the role of HHV-6 in the pathogenesis of organizing pneumonia deserves further study. Viral detection on TBB could represent an adjunctive tool to complement that on BAL.

Abstract
The conventional elective open procedures for abdominal aortic aneurysm repair are reliable and yield durable results. The aortoaortic tube graft has the lowest morbidity incidence when compared with different techniques. Albeit infrequent, thrombosis can be present in the first 30 days. Its treatment consists in thrombectomy and anastomosis evaluation, but with an increase in morbidity, especially in patients with urgent reintervention. This is a case report of a patient with aortoaortic tube graft, who present critical left limb ischemia immediately after surgical procedure. Angiography showed complete occlusion of left common iliac artery, affecting the distal graft anastomosis. The occlusion was resolved with endovascular treatment, and a noncovered, self-expanding, nitinol stent was deployed (primary stenting) covering the distal bypass anastomosis, with no complications and complete lower limb perfusion recovery. One month later, the patient was still asymptomatic, with distal pulse palpable and ankle-brachial index 1.

Abstract
Endovascular treatment can be considered the first line therapy in the majority of dysfunctioning arteriovenous fistula. However, when early thrombosis of the arteriovenous access occurs, surgical treatment is recommended. In these cases, technical problems are the most frequent cause of the malfunction. We report a case of a subacute thrombosis of an arteriovenous fistula, femoral artery to femoral vein looped ePTFE with venous anastomosis occlusion and subocclusion lesion at the arterial anastomosis. Both anastomoses were treated using self-expandable stents, and no other intervention was necessary until the one-year follow-up for maintain patency.

Abstract
AIM The epidemiology of lower respiratory tract (LRT) viral infections in adults is probably underestimated and the high frequency of multiple viral infections complicates the evaluation of the possible role of the single viruses. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical epidemiology and impact of respiratory viral pathogens, in particular of those singularly detected, in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) specimens from hospitalized adult patients. METHODS A panel for the detection of 16 respiratory viruses was used to prospectively evaluate 324 consecutive specimens obtained from 219 patients over a full-year period. RESULTS Two-hundred-twenty-one specimens (68.2%) were positive for at least one virus, 119/324 (36.7%) to a single viral agent. The most commonly detected viruses were herpesviruses HHV-7 (26.2%), human cytomegalo-virus (HCMV, 22.2%), HHV-6 (19.8%), EBV (12.7%), enteroviruses and rhinoviruses (both 11.7%), parainfluenza viruses (4.9 %), and metapneumovirus (4.0%). Human cytomegalo-virus was significantly more prevalent as single viral pathogen with a viral load >105 copies/ml associated to pneumonia in solid organ transplant recipients. Other viral pathogens might account for some cases of pneumonia or respiratory insufficiency, although multiple infections were common. CONCLUSIONS The use of a comprehensive diagnostic panel for respiratory viral infections may be useful to clarify the epidemiology and clinical impact of viral pathogens in hospitalized adult patients. The occurrence of multiple infections is a common finding and results should be interpreted taking into account the clinical context as well as viral load and the biological characteristics of each virus.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Inflammation is a mechanism of glomerular damage in chronic glomerulopathies. LDL may increase the production of inflammatory cytokines in renal tissues. However, the relative role of native, oxidised and glycated LDL in promoting this process has been only partially elucidated. METHODS We tested the inflammatory and proapoptotic effects of native, oxidised and glycated LDL in human mesangial cells (HMCs) by measuring levels of IL6, CD40 and macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) genes, MIF protein, release of IL6, soluble CD40, fibronectin and laminin, early and late apoptosis, and extracellular regulated kinases (ERK) 1/2 and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) activation. RESULTS IL6 and CD40 mRNA were dose-dependently upregulated by all three species; this was closely paralleled by their increased release. MIF mRNA was potently stimulated by modified LDL, as confirmed by immunostaining. Fibronectin and laminin release was stimulated by both oxidised and glycated, but not native, LDL. All LDL species induced some increase in late, but not early, apoptosis, and similarly activated JNK2/3 phosphorylation; in contrast, ERK1/2 phosphorylation was more strongly upregulated by oxidised than either native or glycated LDL. CONCLUSIONS In HMCs, the production and release of IL6 and CD40 is stimulated by both native and modified LDL, while MIF is more strongly stimulated by oxidised LDL. Regarding the pattern of mesangial expansion, fibronectin and laminin are upregulated by oxidised and glycated LDL. Apoptosis, if modest, is induced by all species. Intracellular signalling of native and modified LDL involves JNK2/3 and, perhaps more specifically, ERK1/2. Tight control of the lipid profile may be useful in preserving kidney function in patients with metabolic alterations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adiponectin has antisteatosis-anti-inflammatory properties and its circulating levels are reduced in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). METHODS To assess the role of adiponectin in NASH, we measured expression of adiponectin gene (APM1) and receptors (AdipoR1/AdipoR2) in liver and subcutaneous and visceral fat in subjects with biopsy-proven NASH or pure steatosis (PS). In 103 subjects undergoing gastric bypass or elective abdominal surgery (17 with normal liver histology (C), 52 with PS, and 34 with NASH), RNA was extracted from tissue samples, and quantification of APM1, AdipoR1, and AdipoR2 was carried out by real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS In NASH vs C, circulating adiponectin levels (3.6[2.4] vs 5.3[4.3] microg/ml, median[interquartile range], p < 0.05) and adiponectin concentrations, APM1, AdipoR1, and AdipoR2 expression in visceral fat were all reduced (p < or = 0.03). These differences disappeared when adjusting for obesity. In contrast, liver AdipoR1 (1.40 [0.46] vs 1.00 [0.32] of controls) and AdipoR2 expression (1.20 [0.41] vs 0.78 [0.43]) were increased in NASH, and group differences were statistically significant (p < 0.0001 for AdipoR1 and p = 0.0001 for AdipoR2). Results for PS were generally intermediate between NASH and C. Liver receptor expression was reciprocally related to circulating adiponectin (rho = -0.42, p < 0.003 for AdipoR1 and rho = -0.26, p < 0.009 for AdipoR2). In multivariate models adjusting for sex, age, fasting plasma glucose, and obesity, liver enzymes levels were directly related to both AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 expression in liver. CONCLUSION In obese patients with NASH, adiponectin receptors are underexpressed in visceral fat-as a likely correlate of obesity-but overexpressed in liver, possibly as a compensatory response to hypoadiponectinemia, and positively associated with liver damage.

Abstract
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) represents the second most frequent indication for lung transplantation after chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Survival rate after transplantation is poorer compared with other lung diseases for reasons that are not completely clear. Medical therapy with anti-inflammatory drugs may improve symptoms and quality of life, but it does not influence the survival rate. Lung transplantation is the best therapy for end-stage IPF. The debate regarding the superiority of double lung transplantation (DLT) compared with single lung transplantation (SLT) is still ongoing. Until some years ago, SLT was almost uniformly utilized for this indication. In the most recent years, a larger application of DLT has been observed worldwide, probably related to higher 1-year and 5-year survivals. The unanswered question is whether it is ethical to use two lungs for the same patient, considering the donor shortage, when a single lung would suffice. Many reports have demonstrated that SLT offers acceptable pulmonary function and satisfactory early and intermediate survival. Probably DLT should be reserved for younger recipients, for those with concomitant or possible chronic infection of the contralateral lung, or cases of marginal donors. Further studies will be needed to formulate recommendations regarding the preferred surgical approach in IPF.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinaemia have opposite effects on endothelium-dependent vasodilatation in microcirculation, but the net effect elicited by glucose ingestion and the separate influence of glucose tolerance are unknown. METHODS In participants with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or diabetic glucose tolerance, multiple plasma markers of both oxidative stress and endothelial activation, and forearm vascular responses (plethysmography) to intra-arterial acetylcholine (ACh) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) infusions were measured before and after glucose ingestion. In another IGT group, we evaluated the time-course of the skin vascular responses (laser Doppler) to ACh and SNP (by iontophoresis) 1, 2 and 3 h into the OGTT; the plasma glucose profile was then reproduced by means of a variable intravenous glucose infusion and the vascular measurements repeated. RESULTS Following oral glucose, plasma antioxidants were reduced by 5% to 10% (p < 0.01) in all patient groups. The response to acetylcholine was not affected by glucose ingestion in any group, while the response to SNP was attenuated, particularly in the IGT group. The ACh:SNP ratio was slightly improved therefore in all groups, even in diabetic participants, in whom it was impaired basally. A time-dependent improvement in ACh:SNP ratio was also observed in skin microcirculation following oral glucose; this improvement was blunted when matched hyperglycaemia was coupled with lower hyperinsulinaemia (intravenous glucose). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Regardless of glucose tolerance, oral glucose does not impair endothelium-dependent vasodilatation either in resistance arteries or in the microcirculation, despite causing increased oxidative stress; the endogenous insulin response is probably responsible for countering any inhibitory effect on vascular function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE A major concern during carotid artery stent placement is the potential for cerebral embolism. Diminishing the number of device manipulations across the lesion might reduce procedural stroke risk. For this purpose, we report our initial experience with carotid stent placement without the use of either balloon angioplasty or distal protection devices. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-seven consecutive patients with 100 carotid stenoses compose this series. Ninety four of the 100 hundred stented carotid arteries were either symptomatic (58 [58%]) or had a greater than 70% stenosis (36 [36%]). Six percent of them were asymptomatic and had stenosis between 50% and 70%. Patients underwent neurologic evaluation before the procedure and during follow-up at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months and annually thereafter. Carotid sonography and plain films of the neck were performed immediately after the procedure and then at the same time intervals. RESULTS Primary stent placement was successful in 98 of 100 case subjects. In 2 case subjects, predilation was necessary before stent deployment. Neurologic periprocedural complications included 1 nondisabling and 1 disabling stroke and 5 transient ischemic attacks. The mean duration of follow-up was 23 months (range: 10-36 months). During the follow-up period, there were 5 deaths, all unrelated to the carotid disease, and no major stroke. The degree of stenosis decreased from a mean of 78.85% before the procedure to a mean of 21.23% immediately after. CONCLUSIONS In this series, carotid stent placement without the use of either balloon angioplasty or distal protection devices was safe and effective with a low incidence of periprocedural complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether adiponectin receptor genes (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) expression in human subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissue in severely obese patients with or without diabetes is related to adiponectin gene (APM1) expression and in vivo metabolic parameters. DESIGN Cross-sectional, clinical research study. SUBJECTS Total RNA was extracted from SAT and VAT tissue obtained during surgery from 13 lean controls, 30 obese diabetic patients, 19 obese glucose-intolerant patients and 54 obese subjects with normal glucose tolerance. MEASUREMENTS Tissue expression of APM1, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2, tissue concentration of adiponectin (ApN), and metabolic variables. RESULTS APM1 expression was higher in SAT than VAT (1.06+/-0.76 vs 0.69+/-0.52, P<0.0001) as was AdipoR1 (1.17+/-0.70 vs 0.66+/-0.38, P<0.0001) and AdipoR2 (7.02+/-6.19 vs 0.75+/-0.64, P<0.0001). In SAT, APM1 and AdipoR1 expression tended to be lower - by 0.38+/-0.22 and 0.35+/-0.22, respectively - and AdipoR2 expression was markedly depressed - by 4.82+/-1.93 - in association with obesity, whereas presence of diabetes had no additional effect. In VAT, APM1 and AdipoR1 expressions were also reduced - by 0.36+/-0.16 and 0.30+/-0.11, respectively - in association with obesity. Within both SAT and VAT, expression levels of APM1, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2 were all positively interrelated. Tissue ApN concentrations in SAT were similar across groups, whereas ApN levels in VAT were substantially lower in association with obesity (by an average of 63+/-12 ng/mg total protein, P<0.0001). In multivariate models adjusting for sex, age and obesity, serum triglyceride concentrations were reciprocally related to APM1 (r=-0.27, P<0.02), AdipoR1 (r=-0.37, P<0.002 and AdipoR2 expression (r=-0.37, P<0.002) in VAT. Likewise, plasma insulin concentrations were inversely related only to APM1 in VAT (r=-0.25, P<0.03). CONCLUSIONS Severe obesity is associated with suppressed expression of both ApN and its receptors in both SAT and VAT, the expression levels in VAT are specifically linked with hyperinsulinemia and dyslipidemia.

Abstract
We explored the mechanisms by which a 4-month, placebo-controlled pioglitazone treatment (45 mg/day) improves glycemic control in type II diabetic patients (T2D, n=27) using physiological testing (6-h mixed meal) and a triple tracer technique ([6,6-(2)H(2)]glucose infusion, (2)H(2)O and [6-(3)H]glucose ingestion) to measure endogenous glucose production (EGP), gluconeogenesis (GNG), insulin-mediated glucose clearance and beta-cell glucose sensitivity (by c-peptide modeling). Compared to sex/age/weight-matched non-diabetic controls, T2D patients showed inappropriately (for prevailing insulinemia) raised glucose production (1.05[0.53] vs 0.71[0.36]mmol min(-1) kg(ffm)(-1) pM, P=0.03) because of enhanced GNG (73.1+/-2.4 vs 59.5+/-3.6%, P<0.01) persisting throughout the meal, reduced insulin-mediated glucose clearance (6[5] vs 12[13]ml min(-1) kg(ffm)(-1) nM(-1), P<0.005), and impaired beta-cell glucose-sensitivity (27[38] vs 71[37]pmol min(-1) m(-2) mM(-1), P=0.002). Compared to placebo, pioglitazone improved glucose overproduction (P=0.0001), GNG and glucose underutilization (P=0.05) despite lower insulinemia. GNG improvement was quantitatively related to raised adiponectin. beta-cell glucose sensitivity was unchanged. In mild-to-moderate T2D, pioglitazone monotherapy decreased fasting and post-prandial glycemia, principally via inhibition of gluconeogenesis, improved hepatic and peripheral insulin resistance.

Abstract
AIM Viral lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) are an important cause of morbidity in immunocompromised patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical impact of rapid shell vial cultures from bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). METHODS Sixty-seven BAL samples from 46 patients have been retrospectively examined: 51 from 31 transplant recipients and 16 from 15 immunocompromised patients. BAL were inoculated on human embryonic lung fibroblasts and VERO cells to isolate the following viruses: cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpesviruses, varicella-zoster virus, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, Influenza viruses A and B and Parainfluenza viruses. Clinical, microbiological, laboratory, and radiological data were collected. RESULTS A LRTI was present in 56.7% of cases: viral 40.3%, bacterial and/or fungal 23.9%, and mixed 7.5%. CMV accounted for 92.6% of viral LRTI. The prevalence of viral infections did not differ between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients; only bacterial and/or fungal infections were significantly more prevalent in symptomatic patients. No clinical, radiological or laboratory feature was significantly associated with the presence of a viral LRTI. In lung transplant recipients the rate of CMV infection was 50%. The result of BAL suggested commencement of antiviral chemotherapy in 25/67 episodes. CONCLUSION Rapid shell vial culture and immunofluorescence techniques from BAL could play an important role in the clinical management of immunocompromised subjects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of specific types of tasks on the efficiency of implicit procedural learning in the presence of developmental dyslexia (DD). METHODS Sixteen children with DD (mean (SD) age 11.6 (1.4) years) and 16 matched normal reader controls (mean age 11.4 (1.9) years) were administered two tests (the Serial Reaction Time test and the Mirror Drawing test) in which implicit knowledge was gradually acquired across multiple trials. Although both tests analyse implicit learning abilities, they tap different competencies. The Serial Reaction Time test requires the development of sequential learning and little (if any) procedural learning, whereas the Mirror Drawing test involves fast and repetitive processing of visuospatial stimuli but no acquisition of sequences. RESULTS The children with DD were impaired on both implicit learning tasks, suggesting that the learning deficit observed in dyslexia does not depend on the material to be learned (with or without motor sequence of response action) but on the implicit nature of the learning that characterises the tasks. CONCLUSION Individuals with DD have impaired implicit procedural learning.

Abstract
The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be associated with severe adverse digestive effects. In clinical settings, proton pump inhibitors have proven to be effective in preventing and healing NSAID-induced gastroduodenal lesions. The present study investigates the mechanisms of protection afforded by pantoprazole against gastric injury induced by different NSAIDs in rats. Animals were orally treated with indomethacin (100 micromol/kg), diclofenac (60 micromol/kg), piroxicam (150 micromol/kg) or ketoprofen (150 micromol/kg). Thirty minutes before NSAIDs, animals received pantoprazole 6 or 60 micromol/kg orally. Four hours after NSAIDs, the following parameters were assessed: histomorphometric evaluation of gastric mucosal damage; gastric mucosal levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO), malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione as an index of non-proteic sulfhydryl compounds (GSH), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2); mucosal cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 (COX-1, COX-2) mRNA expression by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Separate experiments were carried out to assay the effects of pantoprazole on gastric acid secretion in pylorus-ligated rats. The in vitro influence of pantoprazole (1-10 microM) on the oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDLs) induced by copper sulphate was also examined. All NSAIDs elicited mucosal necrotic lesions associated with neutrophil infiltration and reduction of PGE2 levels. Increments of MPO and MDA contents, as well as a decrease in GSH levels, were detected in the gastric mucosa of indomethacin-, piroxicam- or ketoprofen-treated animals. Indomethacin enhanced mucosal COX-2 expression, while not affecting COX-1. At the oral dose of 6 micromol/kg pantoprazole did not affect NSAID-induced mucosal damage, whereas at 60 micromol/kg it markedly reduced injuries provoked by all test NSAIDs. Pantoprazole 60 micromol/kg also reversed the effects of NSAIDs on MPO, MDA, and GSH mucosal contents, without interfering with the decrease in PGE2 levels or indomethacin-induced COX-2 expression. However, at both doses, pantoprazole inhibited acid secretion in pylorus-ligated rats. Furthermore, pantoprazole concentration dependently reduced the in vitro oxidation of LDLs. Our results suggest that besides inhibiting acid secretion, the protection afforded by pantoprazole against NSAID-induced gastric damage depends on a reduction in mucosal oxidative injury, which may also account for an increment of sulfhydryl radical mucosal bioavailability. It is also suggested that pantoprazole does not influence the down-regulation of gastric prostaglandin production associated with NSAID treatment.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been associated with the metabolic syndrome. However, it is not clear whether insulin resistance is an independent feature of NAFLD, and it remains to be determined which of the in vivo actions of insulin are impaired in this condition. METHODS We performed a two-step (1.5 and 6 pmol min(-1) kg(-1)) euglycaemic insulin clamp coupled with tracer infusion ([6,6-2H2]glucose and [2H5]glycerol) and indirect calorimetry in 12 non-obese, normolipidaemic, normotensive, non-diabetic patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and six control subjects. RESULTS In NAFLD patients, endogenous glucose production (basal and during the clamp) was normal; however, peripheral glucose disposal was markedly decreased (by 30% and 45% at the low and high insulin doses, respectively, p<0.0001) at higher plasma insulin levels (p=0.05), due to impaired glucose oxidation (p=0.003) and glycogen synthesis (p<0.001). Compared with control subjects, glycerol appearance and lipid oxidation were significantly increased in NAFLD patients in the basal state, and were suppressed by insulin to a lesser extent (p<0.05-0.001). The lag phase of the in vitro copper-catalysed peroxidation of LDL particles was significantly shorter in the patients than in the control subjects (48+/-12 vs 63+/-13 min, p<0.04). Lipid oxidation was significantly related to endogenous glucose production, glucose disposal, the degree of hepatic steatosis, and LDL oxidisability. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Insulin resistance appears to be an intrinsic defect in NAFLD, with the metabolic pattern observed indicating that adipose tissue is an important site.

Nutritional status and airflow obstruction: two independent contributors to CO diffusing capacity impairment in COPD. Monaldi Arch Chest Dis 2005; 63:13-6. Abstract
Background. The association between weight loss and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) has been recognised from many years. Based on the evidence that nutritional status reflects metabolic disturbances in COPD, the relationship between body mass index (BMI), severity of airflow obstruction and CO diffusing capacity (DLCO), that is the functional hallmark of emphysema, is relevant to the management of COPD phenotypes. Methods. We reviewed 104 patients with COPD (82 males), aged 66±9 years (mean±SD). Height averaged 165±8 cm, weight 71±16 Kg, FEV1 50±18 (% of predicted), RV 169±49%, and DLCO 56±26%. Multiple linear regression was performed using BMI, FEV1 and RV, as explanatory variables for DLCO. Patients were also classified into four groups according to BMI ≤ 18.5 (low), > 18.5 and ≤ 25 (ideal), > 25 and ≤ 30 (overweight), > 30 (obese), and post-bronchodilator FEV1 < 50%. Using this categorisation, a two-factor analysis of variance, testing for interaction and main effects (BMI and FEV1) was performed as confirmatory analysis for the association between BMI (kg/m2), FEV1% and DLCO%. Results. FEV1 and BMI were significantly and independently associated to DLCO according to the equation: DLCO = -18.32 + 0.65·FEV1 + 1.59·BMI (R2 = 0.40, p<0.0001). The contribution of RV % to DLCO % was largely non-significant (p=0.16). A close relationship was found between BMI (kg/m2) and DLCO %, for all of the four BMI groups segregated by post-bronchodilator FEV1%, (p<.0001). No interaction was found between these two factors (p=0.30). Conclusion. Nutritional status as assessed by BMI contributes substantially to impairment of DLCO independently of the severity of airflow obstruction. This data confirms the association between emphysematous process and weight loss in advanced COPD, independent of the airflow obstruction severity.
