Abstract
Objective: To explore the relationship between high risk HPV (HR-HPV) DNA load and cervical lesions in HR-HPV single/ multiple infections. Methods: Two thousand six hundred and forty-six women from Shanxi, Henan and Xinjiang were recruited into a cervical cancer screening program. Cervical exfoliated cell specimens collected from all of the participants were detected by hybrid capture Ⅱ (HC2), cytological diagnosis was performed according to the Bethesda System, and pathological diagnosis was interpreted using cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) terminology.Totally 571 cervical specimens were selected and retested to ascertain the HPV types and single/ multiple infections by liner array, a PCR-based method. Semi-quantitative result of HR-HPV DNA load (pg/ml) was estimated by HR HC2.According to the taxonomy of "International Human Papillomavirus Reference Center" , 13 HR-HPVs, including HPV16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59 and 68, which could be detected by HR HC2 were divided into 4 subgroups. Results: The positive rate of HR-HPV in normal cervix (436 cases), CIN1 (88 cases), CIN2+ (47 cases) group were 29.82%, 85.23% and 100%, respectively. The overall prevalence and median viral load increased coordinating with the pathological degree of cervical lesions (P<0.001). The positive rate and viral load of single infection with HR-HPV belongs to α9 species increased coordinating with the pathological degree of cervical lesions (P<0.05). The viral load of single infection with HR-HPV belongs to α7 species in CIN1 group was higher than those of normal group and CIN2+ group, but without statistical significance (P=0.130). The viral load of multiple infections in CIN1 group was 559.13 pg/ml, significantly higher than 37.73 pg/ml of normal histology (P=0.025), but without significant difference of 332.91 pg/ml of CIN2+ group (P=0.790). The median viral load of HPV single infection in CIN1 group was 167.93 pg/ml, significantly lower than 559.73 pg/ml of multiple infections (P=0.044). The incidence of co-infection with HR-HPVs belong to α9 species was 80.56%, dominated in all patterns of multiple infections and their median viral load increased coordinating with the pathological degree of cervical lesions, but without significant difference (P>0.05). The incidence of co-infection with HR-HPVs belong to α7 species was 66.67%, their median viral load in CIN1 group was higher than that of CIN2+ group, but without statistical significance (P>0.05). Conclusions: Viral loads of single/ multiple infections with HR-HPVs belong to different species show different tendencies coordinating with the pathological degree of cervical lesions. Women with high grade of cervical lesion were dominantly infected with high viral load of HR-HPVs belong to α9 species, and the viral load of multiple infections is higher than that of single infection in low grade of cervical lesion.

Abstract
Transport paths and vertical exchange characteristics are important factors for understanding the long-term transport, dispersion capability for haze prediction. Many previous studies revealed that the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, one of the major polluted areas in China, is largely affected by the long-range pollution transport. However, mostly of these studies focused on the source apportionment or horizontal transport path of pollutants by using short-term data, and the vertical exchange characteristics had been rarely analyzed. In this study, using HYSPLIT model, the transport paths and the vertical exchange characteristics of haze episodes over four sub-region of Guangdong (GD) Province in southern China of dry season and wet season were analyzed by using 10years data from 2005 to 2014. Three major transport paths can be statistically summarized based on the long-term data. The haze episodes in PRD and North-GD were distinguished by the characteristics of high frequency and long duration, while the West-GD and East-GD are relatively clean. The haze over North-GD and PRD were mainly influenced by the airflows from northern path, which could bring the pollution from Jiangxi, Anhui, and also influenced by the airflows from coastal path, which could bring the pollution of eastern coastal from Zhejiang and Fujian to Guangdong, while regional transport contributions from Guangdong province and adjacent areas can also be clearly observed. The haze pollution from the identified two major transport paths were mainly transported within the mixing layer (>80% trajectories, <500m), whereas the probability of haze trajectories across mixing layer was relatively low and generally associated with much longer transport distance and higher terrain height over Western China. Combing the vertical exchange analysis, results also show that Wuyi Mountains and Nanling Mountains played a role as barrier to obstruct the haze airflows from other regions of China to the Guangdong province.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between gastrointestinal disorders (GID) and core symptoms or behavioral problems among the children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) . Method: Totally 328 children with ASD and 202 normal controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study from August 2013 to October 2016. The information about the gastrointestinal disorders, behavioral and emotional problems was collected by using questionnaires. Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) were used to assess the core symptoms of the children with ASD. Neurodevelopmental status was evaluated with Gesell Developmental Scale (GDS). These variables were analyzed by using student's t-test and chi-square test. Result: The prevalence of GID was significantly higher in the children with ASD than in the normally developing children (49.4% (162/328) vs.25.7% (52/202), χ(2)=29.039, P=0.000), especially the symptoms of constipation (33.2% (109/328) vs. 13.9% (28/202)), diarrhea (9.5%(31/328) vs. 1.5% (3/202)), nausea and vomiting (9.5% (31/328) vs. 3.5% (7/202)), and foul defecation (16.5% (54/328) vs. 5.0% (10/202)) (all P<0.05). Among the ASD children, the prevalence of GID was similar between male and female (46.7% (133/285) vs. 46.5%(20/43), χ(2)=0.006, P=0.938), as well as among all age groups (χ(2)=1.907, P=0.862). There was no significant difference in scores of GDS in the ASD children with or without GID (all P>0.05). Compared with ASD children without GID (n=166), the ASD children with GID (n=162) got higher scores in the "Body and Object Use" of ABC scale ( (16.4±9.3) vs. (12.3±6.7) scores, t=2.258, P=0.028), and had more emotional problems (63.6% (103/162) vs. 49.4% (82/166), χ(2)=6.707, P=0.010). Moreover, the score of behavior problems questionnaire was higher in the ASD children with GID ( (35.3±16.8) vs. (16.1±13.6) scores, t=5.748, P=0.000). Conclusion: Children with ASD have higher risk of GID than the normal developing children. While the stereotyped behaviors, problem behaviors and emotional problems are severer in the ASD children with GID. Hence, it is important to provide comprehensive treatment and management for these groups of children.

The thermal bonding method is an advanced processing technology, which can bond a variety of polymer sheets on request. This work aims to analyze the effect of applied loading, heating temperature and duration on the depth loss of the PMMA microfluidic chip after bonding. Several experiments were designed by us and the results were analyzed by orthogonal experimental method. Finally optimal applied loading, heating temperature and duration were obtained and in the optimal case, the bonded microfluidic chip has small depth loss and enough strength.

Abstract
Bone metastasis is a common complication in prostate cancer patients that can cause bone pain and pathological fracture. This study tested serum levels of prostate specific antigen (PSA), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone sialoprotein (BSP), collagen type I pyridine crosslinking peptide (ICTP) in prostate cancer patients and the significance of the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve in the diagnosis of prostate cancer bone metastases. Eighty-three prostate cancer patients were enrolled including 42 in the bone metastases group and 41 in the non-bone metastases group. Serum levels of BSP, ALP, ICTP, and PSA were highest in the bone metastases group followed by the non-bone metastases group, hyperplasia group, and then the control group (P < 0.05). Based on Gleason score, serum levels were highest in the poorly differentiated group followed by moderately differentiated and well-differentiated groups (P < 0.05). ROC curve analysis revealed that the diagnostic efficiency of the biomarkers in turn was BSP, PSA, ICTP, and ALP. The sensitivity of BSP, ALP, ICTP, and PSA in the diagnosis of prostate cancer bone metastases were 80.95, 57.14, 69.05, 71.43%, respectively, and the specificity of the same markers were 72.80, 64.80, 76.80, and 88.80%, respectively. Combined detection of the four markers improved sensitivity to 97.62% and the negative-predictive value increased to 97.60%. PSA + BSP showed the best efficiency when combining two markers. In conclusion, serum levels of BSP, ALP, ICTP, and PSA increased in patients with bone metastases, and combined detection of all markers could improve the positive-predictive value.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate the correlation and clinical significance of hormone receptors and the expressions of HER-2 and Ki-67 in breast cancer primary lesions and lymph node metastatic tissues. METHODS 83 cases were studied, who were performed breast cancer surgeries and confirmed the ipsilateral axillary lymph node metastasis by the postoperative pathological diagnosis. Immunohistochemical method was used to simultaneously detect the expressions of ER, PR, HER-2 and Ki-67 in the primary lesions and lymph node metastases. RESULTS ER exhibited the expression concordance rate as 85.5% in primary lesions and metastases, with significant difference (P = 0.039); the expression concordance rates of PR and HER-2 in primary lesions and metastases were 90.4% and 89.2%, respectively, without significant difference (P = 0.289, 0.180); between the Ki-67-highly-expressed primary lesions and Ki-67-lowly-expressed metastases, the expressions of ER in primary lesions and metastases exhibited statistical significance, with P as 0.031. CONCLUSIONS The primary lesions and lymph node metastases had higher consistency, while there was still about 10% patients showed differentiated expression. The simultaneous detection of breast cancer primary lesions and lymph node metastases was still very necessary.

Abstract
The far-field sound radiation behavior of a circular cylindrical shell submerged at finite depth from the free surface is studied. Based on the Flügge shell theory and the Helmholtz equation, the structure-acoustic coupling equation is established. An image method is applied so that the sound boundary condition of the free surface can be satisfied. Analytical expression of the far-field sound pressure is obtained using the stationary phase method and the Graf's addition theorem. In order to evaluate the effect of the submerged depth on sound radiation, the results of the submerged cylindrical shell at finite depth from the free surface are compared with those of the submerged cylindrical shell in the infinite fluid. The characteristics of the far-field sound pressure with the change of the depth are investigated. It is found that the submerged depth has a significant influence on the far-field sound pressure radiated from the submerged cylindrical shell due to the free surface effects. The work provides more understanding on the sound radiation properties of the submerged circular cylindrical shell without assuming infinite fluid field, which was commonly used in previous studies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics of diabetes mellitus patients with Burkholderia pseudomallei septicemia and evaluate strategies of diagnosis and treatment. The clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of 39 diabetes mellitus patients with B. pseudomallei septicemia were retrospectively analyzed. Farmers, fishermen and workers were found to be high-risk groups. The clinical manifestations of patients were diverse without specific features, but mainly presented manifestations of acute fulminant septicemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, and abscesses in tissues or/and organs. Patients showed high mortality and misdiagnosis rates and were prone to relapses and long treatment duration as there are currently few effective and sensitive antibiotics for the disease. Consequently, the cost of treatment for the disease was high. Early diagnosis, a prolonged course of heavy doses of sensitive intravenous antibiotics, drainage of abscesses, intensive insulin therapy, and supportive treatment are the keys for successful management of the disease. Regular follow-ups combined with long-term blood glucose control can help reduce the disease recurrence.

Abstract
Modern telecommunications rely on the transmission and manipulation of optical signals. Optical amplification plays a vital part in this technology, as all components in a real telecommunications system produce some loss. The two main issues with present amplifiers, which rely on erbium ions in a glass matrix, are the difficulty in integration onto a single substrate and the need of high pump power densities to produce gain. Here we show a potential organic optical amplifier material that demonstrates population inversion when pumped from above using low-power visible light. This system is integrated into an organic light-emitting diode demonstrating that electrical pumping can be achieved. This opens the possibility of direct electrically driven optical amplifiers and optical circuits. Our results provide an alternative approach to producing low-cost integrated optics that is compatible with existing silicon photonics and a different route to an effective integrated optics technology.

Abstract
Objective Oral tramadol is a commonly prescribed analgesic in Hong Kong. Significant adverse effects are frequently observed in our locality. Our study aims to describe the rate of significant adverse effect that warrant discontinuation of oral tramadol and identify the risk factors for development of adverse effect. Design Retrospective cohort study. Methods Adult patients aged greater than 18 years old admitted to the emergency medicine ward of a large-scale local hospital in Hong Kong being prescribed with oral tramadol during in-hospital stay were recruited. Significant adverse effects during the hospital stay were observed as the outcome of interest. Results A total of 575 subjects were recruited. 29.9% experienced significant adverse effects likely related to tramadol. Age (p=0.006; odds ratio [OR] = 1.017, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.005-1.029) and sex (p=0.006; OR=1.696, 95% CI= 1.166-2.465) were statistically significant predictors of adverse effects after oral tramadol. Conclusion Our study suggests that female and increasing age patients are significant predictors for the development of adverse effect after taking oral tramadol. Possible adverse effects should be explained to the patients careful especially the higher risk groups. (Hong Kong j. emerg.med. 2014;21:3-9)

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nasal polyposis (NP) is a Th2-skewed inflammatory disorder, but it is unclear what role regulatory T cells (T-reg) play in disease pathology. We investigated the expression profiles of T-reg and T-helper-cell-associated genes and their response to glucocorticosteroid (GC) treatment in Chinese patients with NP. METHODS Biopsies were obtained from 29 non-treated NP patients for comparison with inferior turbinates collected from healthy controls. In 13 patients, NP samples were collected both before and after short-term oral GC treatment. Levels of mRNA for T-cell markers were determined by microarray and quantitative PCR. Cellular infiltrates were assessed by histo- and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS FOXP3(+) T-reg were increased in GC-naïve NP, and numbers were negatively correlated with eosinophil infiltration. Helios staining was not detected, suggesting that FOXP3(+) cells in NP are not thymus-derived T-reg. Compared with controls, mRNA levels corresponding to T-reg genes were significantly increased in NP (FOXP3, TGFB1, IL10, SMAD3, IL2RA, and JAK3), but transcription factors associated with Th2 (GATA3) or Th17 responses (RORc) were significantly reduced. FOXP3 mRNA levels positively correlated with other T-reg cell markers. Microarray analysis showed that most Th2-related markers (e.g., Eotaxin-1, CCL13, and CCL18) were upregulated in GC-naïve NP vs controls. GC therapy significantly suppressed eosinophilic inflammation in NP, but did not significantly alter the expression levels of T-reg/Th2-associated genes. CONCLUSIONS Upregulation of FOXP3(+) -inducible T-reg cells and downregulation of Th2 and Th17 markers in NP indicate a regulatory response occurring at a site of persistent mucosal inflammation. However, immune regulation fails to control the underlying tissue pathology. Expression of T-reg/Th2 markers after GC treatment was unaltered, suggesting that T-cell-driving NP inflammatory mediators are GC resistant.

OBJECTIVE This study of a birth cohort in the city of Tongliang in Chongqing, China, evaluated the relationship between two prenatal exposures (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH) and environmental tobacco smoke(ETS)) and child intelligence quotient (IQ) as measured by the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence at age 5 years. A coal-fired power plant was the major source of ambient PAH in this city. We tested the hypothesis that, after adjusting for potential confounders, prenatal exposure to these pollutants would be associated with lower IQ scores at 5 years of age. METHODS Nonsmoking mothers and children were enrolled before delivery. PAH exposure was measured by DNA adducts in umbilical cord white blood cells using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Fluorescence. Estimated exposure to environmental tobacco smoke was based on personal interview. At age 5 years, scores for verbal, performance, and full scale IQ were obtained. Multiple regression was used to test the main effects of adducts and environmental tobacco smoke on IQ and to explore the interactions between these exposures on IQ. RESULTS after adjusting for potential confounders, neither DNA adducts nor exposure to environmental tobacco smoke had significant main effects on IQ. However, significant interactions between adducts and environmental tobacco smoke were observed on full scale (p=0.025) and verbal (p=0.029) IQ scores, indicating that the adverse effects of prenatal PAH exposure became greater as exposure to environmental tobacco smoke increased. The interaction on performance IQ score was not significant (p=0.135). CONCLUSION These results suggest that exposure of pregnant women to emissions of PAHs from the coal-burning plant, in combination with prenatal exposure to envrionmental tobacco smoke, may have adversely affected cognitive function of children at age 5. The polluting coal-fired plant has since been closed by the government, with likely important benefits to child health and development.

Abstract
This summary provides a synopsis of talks included in a symposium entitled "Current Needs and Future Directions of Occupational Safety and Heath in a Globalized World". The purpose of the symposium was to (1) highlight national and international agencies with occupational health related activities; (2) address electronic (e-)waste issues in developing countries where exposures are secondary to the handling and scavenging of scrap; and (3) discuss the effects of hazardous materials, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and tobacco smoke on child intelligence quotient (IQ) in developing countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of DLG5 R30Q with IBD has been replicated in several populations, but is not statistically significant in others. We studied the incidence of DLG5 alleles in a population of IBD patients from Pennsylvania. METHODS DLG5 R30Q (rs1248696) and G1066G (rs1248634) were analyzed with PCR-based RFLP methods in a total of 521 subjects, that included 105 individuals with IBD and 139 without IBD from a familial IBD registry, 107 with sporadic IBD, and 170 unrelated healthy controls. R30Q was further analyzed with SNPlex Genotyping System in 473 samples. RESULTS RFLP genotyping data showed that, DLG5 R30Q was significantly associated with IBD overall (p=0.006), and separately with CD (p=0.009) and UC (p=0.024). The association of R30Q with IBD was entirely due to a male-associated effect (male vs female p=0.015 vs 0.241 (IBD), p=0.024 vs 0.190 (CD), and p=0.019 vs 0.575 (UC)). The frequency of the A allele carriage was elevated in both affected and unaffected members in the familial IBD cohort compared to healthy controls (p=0.037). In the family pedigrees, we observed differences in the expression of IBD in individuals carrying the A allele between families. CONCLUSIONS In the studied population, DLG5 R30Q was associated with all forms of IBD. An elevated presence of the R30Q variant was observed in all members of a familial IBD registry. This association of the R30Q variant with IBD was male-specific.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Coffee has been linked to both beneficial and harmful health effects, but data on its relationship with cardiovascular disease and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes are sparse. METHODS This was a prospective cohort study including 7,170 women with diagnosed type 2 diabetes but free of cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline. Coffee consumption was assessed in 1980 and then every 2-4 years using validated questionnaires. A total of 658 incident cardiovascular events (434 coronary heart disease and 224 stroke) and 734 deaths from all causes were documented between 1980 and 2004. RESULTS After adjustment for age, smoking and other cardiovascular risk factors, the relative risks were 0.76 (95% CI 0.50-1.14) for cardiovascular diseases (p trend = 0.09) and 0.80 (95% CI 0.55-1.14) for all-cause mortality (p trend = 0.05) for the consumption of >or=4 cups/day of caffeinated coffee compared with non-drinkers. Similarly, multivariable RRs were 0.96 (95% CI 0.66-1.38) for cardiovascular diseases (p trend = 0.84) and 0.76 (95% CI 0.54-1.07) for all-cause mortality (p trend = 0.08) for the consumption of >or=2 cups/day of decaffeinated coffee compared with non-drinkers. Higher decaffeinated coffee consumption was associated with lower concentrations of HbA(1c) (6.2% for >or=2 cups/day versus 6.7% for <1 cup/month; p trend = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS These data provide evidence that habitual coffee consumption is not associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases or premature mortality among diabetic women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic mucosal inflammation, epithelial damage and aberrant tissue remodelling are common features in nasal polyposis (NP). A study was undertaken to characterise the gene expression profile in NP tissues and to explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the ameliorative effects of glucocorticosteroids (GCs) in NP. METHODS Two sets of NP biopsies (before and after GC treatment) were taken from 10 patients with untreated (GC-naïve) bilateral NP. Biopsy specimens of inferior turbinate from 6 patients who underwent surgery for nasal septal deviation served as nasal mucosal controls. DNA microarrays containing 38 500 genes were used to characterise the global gene expression profile. Functional network analysis was applied to identify the key molecular pathways and genes in response to GC treatment (GC-treated). Selected genes were retested by quantitative RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry in the same polyps and control samples. RESULTS 64 genes were differentially expressed in GC-treated vs GC-naïve NP tissues. The highest scoring network was assembled around activation protein 1 (AP-1), a heterodimer of c-Fos and c-Jun oncoprotein, and five AP-1-related genes (COX-2, IL-6, AREG, HBEGF and EGR1) with tissue repair function. Quantitative PCR confirmed that AP-1 and its related genes were markedly repressed in GC-naïve polyps and were upregulated after GC treatment. Immunohistochemical staining indicated that epithelial restitution in GC-treated polyps was associated with increased expression of c-Jun protein. CONCLUSIONS Oral steroids promote epithelial repair in NP via upregulation of the AP-1 (especially c-Jun) network and its related genes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the attitude and perception of surgeons about postoperative pain management, and an anaesthesiologist-based acute pain service. DESIGN Questionnaire survey. SETTING Tertiary university teaching hospital, Hong Kong. PARTICIPANTS All surgical staff members (specialists and trainees) of the Departments of Surgery, Orthopaedics and Traumatology, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Opinions on postoperative pain management, different pain management modalities, and services provided by the acute pain service. RESULTS Of the 147 questionnaires, 104 (71%) were returned. The majority (97%) agreed that effective pain control improves patient recovery and 88% believed that anaesthetists should be involved in postoperative pain management. Overall, 85% of the respondents were satisfied with the acute pain service. However, about one third of them wanted to maintain an active role in postoperative pain management and only 54% thought that the acute pain service has a significant impact on patient outcomes. In addition, only 10% of surgeons agreed that patients receiving acute pain service intervention would be discharged earlier. The respondents also thought that, compared to intravenous patient-controlled analgesia, epidural analgesia required more nursing care and was less cost-effective. Areas of the acute pain service warranting improvement included: education of surgeons on postoperative pain and its management (92%), communication (74%), and referral systems (80%). CONCLUSION The majority of surgeons were satisfied with the acute pain service and agreed that anaesthetists should be involved in postoperative pain management. However, a proportion wanted to maintain an active role in postoperative pain management.

Abstract
This study investigated the subtype distribution of the human papillomavirus (HPV) in the patients with condyloma accuminatum (CA) in Shenzhen city, China, and assessed the relationship between different HPV subtypes and cervical neoplasia. Type-specific prevalence and extent of multiple infections were assessed in the genital tract. CA samples collected from the 352 patients in the departments of dermatology and gynecology from the People's Hospital in Shenzhen during 2004-2006, using MY09/11 PCR and reverse dot blot hybridization for genotyping of 9-20 kinds of HPV subtypes. HPV status was studied in relation to the pathologic findings. HPV type diversity was wide. The low-risk HPV subtype 11 and 6 were the main subtypes, and multiple HPV infection rate was about 37% in HPV-positive samples. High-risk HPV (HR-HPV) types (16, 18, 58, 52, and 33) were the main subtypes in the CA of cervix, especially in the advanced stage cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia II(+) or above), multiple HR-HPV infection was found in 87% of HPV-positive samples. We conclude that HPV type 6 and 11 were the main subtypes in patients with CA in Shenzhen region, while HPV type 16 and 18 may be one of the main reasons for malignant changes of cervix, but this study cannot prove the association between multiple HPV infection and severity of cervix lesions.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Leptin, an adipocyte-secreted hormone, plays an important role in regulating neuroendocrine and immune function as well as insulin resistance and metabolism. Our objective was to examine the relationship between leptin levels and cardiovascular morbidity and overall mortality in women with type 2 diabetes. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This prospective cohort study included 1,194 women with a confirmed diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, who provided a blood sample at baseline in 1989-1990. Participants were followed for 12 years for the development of health outcomes including cardiovascular disease (CVD) events as well as total mortality. RESULTS There were 218 new CVD events and 228 deaths from all causes. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to estimate the relative risks (RRs) for each quintile level of leptin compared with the lowest quintile. Leptin levels were positively associated with several CVD risk factors including BMI and inflammatory markers, but were not independently associated with the incidence of CVD or total mortality in women with diabetes. The multivariate RRs (95% CIs) for CVD across the quintiles of leptin were 0.96 (0.61-1.53), 0.99 (0.61-1.61), 1.04 (0.63-1.71), 1.02 (0.59-1.75) (p for trend = 0.83). CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Although circulating leptin levels are associated with obesity and inflammatory markers, they are not significantly related to the risk of CVD or mortality in women with diabetes.
